A perfect night says Ten Hag as Man Utd thrash Barnsley 7-0

Erik ten Hag celebrated a resounding victory as Manchester United defeated Barnsley 7-0 in the Carabao Cup, calling it a “perfect night.”

Marcus Rashford, Alejandro Garnacho, and Christian Eriksen each scored two goals, with Antony converting a penalty to complete the scoreline.

This triumph marked Ten Hag’s biggest win since taking charge of United and was the club’s largest victory since their 9-0 thrashing of Southampton in February 2021 under former manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

“Not for me but for the team this is the perfect night,” Ten Hag said afterwards. “I think we could do everything that we planned to do; how we win, next round, scored some great goals, entertained the fans, we worked on our game model so we are happy.”

Ten Hag took the opportunity to rotate his lineup for the Carabao Cup match against Barnsley, making eight changes from the side that defeated Southampton 3-0.

Marcus Rashford was one of the few to retain his spot, adding two goals to his tally after scoring at the weekend. This marked the first time the England forward scored multiple goals in a match since February 2023, when he netted twice in a 3-0 win over Leicester City.

“I know from my first season here that when he scores then, for the team, it’s more easy,” said Ten Hag. “When you have a player in your squad who is a guarantee for goals then it can make the difference.

You can do a lot of things very well between the boxes but football matches are decided in the box.”

United have bounced back from the 3-0 defeat to Liverpool by scoring 10 goals without conceding against Southampton and Barnsley.

“I was not devastated after Liverpool, and I am not celebrating now,” said Ten Hag. It is a never-ending process. I know where I want to go, in which direction.

I know we have a lot of speed, dynamic, and we have seen this today and we have players capable of dominating possession. We have to work even harder to get all the stages of the game right.”

Vintage fur coats from Barnsley donated and sent to war-torn Ukraine

Unwanted fur coats have been sent to Ukraine to help people stay warm during the winter, instead of being destroyed.

Vintage clothing seller Glass Onion, based in Barnsley, is working with a charity to send coats to people who need them instead of throwing them away.

“The coats are no longer in style, but they are being used to help people,” explained Alice Leadbetter from the company. The fur coats were very helpful, said Rev Bernard Cocker, who started the International Aid Trust charity.

Over 600 coats were sent to places near Kyiv and given to people and refugees in the Donbas region.

Ms Leadbetter talked to the BBC and said, “We found out about International Aid Trust from Peta. They needed donations to help people hurt by the war in Ukraine. ”

“We can’t take back the mean things done to make these coats, but we can recycle them to help the people who need them the most. ”

Mr Cocker has been working in Ukraine since 1991. He said he met many people who lost everything, not even having a knife or fork.

“When it gets really cold in winter, like -30C (-22F), and people don’t have warm clothes or wood for fires, these fur coats help them stay alive,” he said.

“What was going to be ruined is now helping to keep people alive. It’s as simple as that. ”

He said that when the coats are given to people, their eyes sparkle with happiness.

“He said people are starting to like the coats that were on the animals’ backs. ”

“It’s a lot better than breaking them. “

Barnsley fire four in win over South Yorkshire rivals Sheffield Wednesday

Barnsley scored two late goals in a 4-2 League One victory over South Yorkshire rivals Sheffield Wednesday to end their opponents’ 23-match unbeaten league run as they dropped down to second.

The game burst into life in the 10th minute when Mads Andersen slipped the ball through to Devante Cole on the left-hand side of the area and the striker beat goalkeeper Cameron Dawson with a low, angled shot.

James Norwood increased Barnsley’s lead two minutes later with a low strike from just outside the area after receiving the ball from Cole.

Wednesday reduced the arrears when a long ball from Will Vaulks found Michael Smith on the right and he sent over a low cross which was turned into the net from close range by Lee Gregory just after the half-hour mark.

It was 2-2 when Barry Bannan’s ball over the top found Marvin Johnson on the left and his low cross was finished by Gregory – who completed his brace – from close range after 74 minutes.

When Luca Connell’s ball into the area caused problems for the Wednesday defenders, Max Watters fired past Dawson with seven minutes remaining to put the hosts ahead.

Liam Kitching added a fourth goal in stoppage time as Barnsley strengthened their hold on fourth and extended their unbeaten league run to 12 games.
