  • Black Queens coach hopes injured players recover during coronavirus break

Head Coach for the Black Queens of Ghana, Mrs. Mercy Tagoe-Quarcoo is taking positives from the Coronavirus (Covid-19) break as she notes that it will give injured players the time to recover.

Football in Ghana and Africa has been on suspension for the past 3 months as a measure to curb the spread of the deadly Covid-19 disease.

Despite the enormous effects it is having on clubs, Coach Mercy Tagoe-Quarcoo says it has presented a good opportunity for some players who are nursing various injuries.

According to the gaffer, injured players can use the period to continue their road to recover and hope they are back to full fitness when the football season resumes.

“The only benefit derived from this pandemic period is that those that are injured will have ample time to recover while I also keep in touch with the Doctor to see to their health. Currently, all the ladies who traveled to Turkey are aware of how competitive the team has become and want to retain their position by trying hard to keep up. I make them take videos while training, the technical team accumulates all the program so that we make corrections”, the coach said in an interview with the Communication team of the Ghana FA.

Coach Bashir Hayford is currently unattached after parting ways with the Somalia national team.

He is vying for the vacant Ghana Football Association Technical Director position after Oti Akenteng left the post earlier this month after his 14 years of services.

After more than a decade of leaving the Porcupine Warriors, coach Bashir Hayford believes a return to Kotoko is possible and is ready to manage them.

“Yes, I’m a grown-up now but cannot rule out the possibility of coaching Asante Kotoko again. Currently, I’m too matured and ready to take up the mantle when necessary”, coach Hayford told Light FM

  • Coronavirus: Black Queens star Dumehasi joins Ghana Police Service to fight pandemic

Ghana goalkeeper Fafali Dumehasi has announced she will be teaming up with the Police Force to combat the spread of the coronavirus in the West African country.

The Black Queens star starred for Mercy Tagoe’s team as they emerged as runners-up in Group B at the 2020 Turkish Women’s Cup in Alanya in March, with six points from three games.

Following the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic, sporting events, competitions and leagues shut down globally, including in Ghana, killing five from 204 infected people in the country so far.

Two weeks ago, Dumehasi – who plays for Ghanaian top-flight side Police Ladies – had urged Ghanaians to obey safety rules in an effort to escape contracting the disease.

With the halt of the Ghana Women’s Premier League, the 26-year-old took to social media to confirm her resumption of duty with the country’s security forces in curbing the spread of the virus.

“Let’s just follow the directives for the president Nana Akufo Addo. Stay home citizens if you can, we are there for you.”

  • Ernestina Abambila still in my plans – Mercy Tagoe

Ghana women’s coach Mercy Tagoe has maintained she will still need the services of Ernestina Abambila in the Black Queens squad.

The midfielder starred for the West African nation at U17 and U20 level, scoring five goals in 21 outings before being promoted to the senior team, where she has only earned two caps so far.

The 21-year-old was last part of Ghana squad for the third round of the Women’s Olympic Games qualifiers against Kenya in October 2019.

However, Abambila, who joined Spanish side Sporting Huelva from Swedish outfit Assi in January, has made six outings but missed a spot in Ghana’s team at the Turkish Women’s Cup earlier this month.

And the 46-year-old former international assures Abambila is still remains part of her plans ahead of the 2020 African Women’s Cup of Nations, despite the abundance of talent at her disposal.

“I didn’t call her but she’s still in my plans,” Tagoe told Goal.

“I gave her the opportunity the last time during the Olympic qualifiers but she was not too good although not too bad which I considered was due to fatigue, playing a day after joining the team.

“I wanted to give another player a chance because we have so many talents in Ghana to grow our options because we can make use of them at any time. We cannot be focused on a particular player.

“I’m trying to do my best to explore the talents we have and I’m confident we can build a good team for the future.”

Ghana will hope to qualify for the 2020 African Women’s Cup of Nations later this year but must negotiate past Guinea-Bissau or Gambia in the final qualifying round in June.
