The Black Satellites of Ghana finished as runners-up in the WAFU Zone B Championship after falling to the Flying Eagles of Nigeria in the final.

The decisive match took place at the Stade de Kégué in Lomé, Togo, on Wednesday, October 30, 2024, where Nigeria claimed victory with a score of 2-1.

Throughout the match, Nigeria displayed superior performance, with Kparobo Arierhi netting the first goal in the 35th minute. He capitalised on well-executed team play, leaving the Ghanaian defence in disarray.

Just before halftime, Arierhi struck again, doubling Nigeria’s lead and sending them into the break with a comfortable two-goal advantage.

In the second half, the Black Satellites increased their intensity in search of a goal. Despite their efforts, the Nigerian defense held firm against their advances. However, in the 76th minute, Jerry Afriyie managed to break through and score for Ghana, reigniting hopes for a comeback.

Ultimately, Ghana was unable to equalise, and the match concluded with Nigeria winning 2-1.

Despite the loss, Ghana secured a spot in the 2025 Africa Under-20 Championship by defeating Ivory Coast in the tournament’s semi-final. Additionally, Jerry Afriyie was recognized as the best player of the championship.

Our goal is to play at 2025 U-20 World Cup – Black Satellites

Head coach of the Black Satellites, Desmond Ofei, has set his sights on guiding Ghana to the 2025 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Chile.

Ofei took over as head coach of the Satellites in September 2023, succeeding Samuel Boadu, whom he had served as assistant for nine months.

At 36 years old, Ofei believes that the team has the necessary quality to secure a spot in the next edition of the U-20 World Cup.

“Personally it’s day by day, step by step, and competition by competition. For us, the most important competition now is the WAFU because we really want to partake in the next World Cup which takes place in 2025.”

“We still have a lot of work to do. Now we have a good base and we can build on it. The next objective is the WAFU in October. We will prepare well and scout extensively to get all the hidden gems to come and help the team progress to the World Cup,” he said.

Ofei’s tenure began successfully as he led the team to victory in the African Games, where they secured the gold medal by defeating Uganda in the final.

This achievement marked Ghana’s first gold medal in the African Games since 2011 in Maputo, where they also emerged victorious.

“We are very proud of this achievement. We are happy we added an extra gold to the country’s tally,” Ofei told 3Sports as he talked about his success.

“I need some good rest. It’s been intense. It’s my first time working in Africa on this level. It’s not easy because I coach with passion and give everything. It took a lot but now I have to go back and get enough energy. I have to get back with my family; my wife and kids.”

Despite Ghana’s recent gold medal win at the African Games, Desmond Ofei, the head coach of the Black Satellites, is focused on an even bigger goal: qualifying for the U-20 World Cup. Ghana’s last appearance in this competition was in 2005, and Ofei is determined to change that.

At 36 years old, Ofei believes that the team has the necessary quality to secure a spot in the next edition of the U-20 World Cup.

“Personally it’s day by day, step by step, and competition by competition. For us, the most important competition now is the WAFU because we really want to partake in the next World Cup which takes place in 2025,” he added.

“We still have a lot of work to do. Now we have a good base and we can build on it. The next objective is the WAFU in October. We will prepare well and scout extensively to get all the hidden gems to come and help the team progress to the World Cup.”

  • Mark Adu Amofah advises footballers to seek legal advice before signing contracts

Mark Adu Amofah advises footballers to seek legal advice before signing contracts

Former Asante Kotoko forward, Mark Adu Amofah, emphasized the importance of footballers seeking legal advice before, during, and after signing their contracts.

The former Black Satellites and Meteors player believes that understanding the legal aspects of contracts is crucial for a smooth transition from amateur to professional level.

He highlighted that many footballers focus solely on signing the contract and the signing-on fee they will receive, without paying adequate attention to the legal obligations within the agreement.

Adu Amofah pointed out that this lack of attention to legalities can lead to contract terminations before their due dates or even result in players resorting to the Court of Arbitration (CAS) to resolve disputes.

As a veteran player based in the United States, he advised footballers to involve individuals with expertise in legal matters or hire a lawyer who can guide them and explain the legal terms involved in their contracts.

This proactive approach will help footballers protect their interests and ensure a smoother and more informed contractual journey throughout their careers.

“Most footballers are only focused on the signing on fee and earning their wages but do not pay attention to the legal clauses that the club could stand on and terminate your contract without you earning a penny.

Any contract for a player to sign, there should be a legal representative for the player”, he said.

“These clubs have lawyers who add legal clauses in contracts to favour them should the club decide to terminate your contract and leave you with nothing. Also, players should take on the club if they also fail to honour their part of the contract”

“I will advise every footballer to seek the help of an attorney or lawyer. You don’t wait until you get to play at the professional level. Guiding the young one’s about what and how to sign a contract broadens the scope of understanding the implications of signing a contract with clauses that shape their careers ‘, he added.

Adu Amofah played for Asante Kotoko from 2006 to 2007 where he featured in the CAF Champions League and also played for Ghana’s U20 and U23 teams.

He is the founder of Unique Sports Talent Worldwide and AA Sports International, a non-profit organization.

  • Space rock passes closer than some satellites

Space rock passes closer than some satellites

Now it’s over, we can say it: a biggish asteroid passed by Earth a short while ago.

About the size of a minibus, the space rock, known as 2023 BU, whipped over the southern tip of South America just before 00:30am GMT.

With a closest approach of 3,600km (2,200 miles), it counts as a close shave.

And it illustrates how there are still asteroids of significant size lurking near Earth that remain to be detected.

This one was only picked up last weekend by amateur astronomer Gennadiy Borisov, who operates from Nauchnyi in Crimea, the peninsula that Russia seized from Ukraine in 2014.

Follow-up observations have refined what we know about 2023 BU’s size and, crucially, its orbit.

That’s how astronomers could be so confident it would miss the planet, even though it came inside the arc occupied by the world’s telecommunications satellites, which sit 36,000km (22,000 miles) above us.

The chances of hitting a satellite are very, very small.

The time of lowest altitude was accurately calculated to be 19:27 EST on Thursday, or 00:27 GMT on Friday.

      Asteroid
Image caption,Artwork: We still have a lot to learn about the near-Earth environment

Even if 2023 BU had been on a direct collision course, it would have struggled to do much damage.

With an estimated size of 3.5m to 8.5m across (11.5ft to 28ft), the rock would likely have disintegrated high in the atmosphere. It would have produced a spectacular fireball, however.

For comparison, the famous Chelyabinsk meteor that entered Earth’s atmosphere over southern Russia in 2013 was an object near 20m (66ft) across. It produced a shockwave that shattered windows on the ground.

Scientists at the US space agency Nasa say 2023 BU’s orbit around the Sun has been modified by its encounter with Earth.

Our planet’s gravity pulled on it and adjusted its path through space.

“Before encountering Earth, the asteroid’s orbit around the Sun was roughly circular, approximating Earth’s orbit, taking 359 days to complete its orbit about the Sun,” the agency said in a statement.

“After its encounter, the asteroid’s orbit will be more elongated, moving it out to about halfway between Earth’s and Mars’ orbits at its furthest point from the Sun. The asteroid will then complete one orbit every 425 days.”

There is a great effort under way to find the much larger asteroids that really could do damage if they were to strike the Earth.
