Ghana, under the leadership of newly appointed captain Jordan Ayew, will be looking to secure a vital win to boost their chances of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The team has faced mixed results in recent matches, and head coach Otto Addo has emphasized the importance of a strong performance against Chad.

  • Being named captain of Black Stars was written in the stars – Jordan Ayew

Being named captain of Black Stars was written in the stars – Jordan Ayew

Jordan Ayew believes his appointment as the Black Stars’ captain was inevitable.

The forward, who has been part of the national team since 2010, has earned over 100 caps and remained a consistent figure in Ghana’s squad.

Like his father, Abedi Pele, and his brother, Andre Ayew, Jordan has always shown commitment to the team, making himself available for selection whenever called upon.

In March, he was officially named the Black Stars’ captain, putting an end to ongoing debates about frequent leadership changes in the squad.

He took over from Andre Ayew, although Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey had stepped in as captain in Andre’s absence.

Speaking to Joy Sports about his new role, Jordan said it was only a matter of time before he became captain, following in the footsteps of his father and brother.

“I believe in destiny. I believe [becoming Ghana captain] was probably written in the stars,” he said.

Jordan captained Ghana against Angola in the Black Stars’ penultimate game in their underwhelming 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

Jordan Ayew refutes disunity claims amongst Black Stars, says they are like brothers

Ghanaian footballer Jordan Ayew has dismissed rumors of division among Black Stars players, insisting they share a strong bond like brothers.

Ayew was named captain of the team ahead of the World Cup qualifiers in March, having previously led Ghana in an AFCON qualifier against Angola last November.

The 33-year-old took over the leadership role from his older brother, Andre Ayew, who had worn the captain’s armband for years.

In 2024, Ghana’s captaincy became a hot topic, with different players, including Thomas Partey, Mohammed Kudus, and Jordan Ayew, taking turns leading the team. Reports suggested this led to internal conflicts.

However, Jordan Ayew has denied these claims, saying any disagreements within the squad are normal and similar to what happens in a family. He assured that there are no serious issues among the players.

“Obviously, we are both best friends because everyone is different and has who they’re closest to. But just like a family, the fact that you’re closer to your sister doesn’t mean you don’t love your brother. There’s no problem or friction. We are like brothers,” he told Joy Sports.

Ayew will lead the Black Stars out as captain for the first time when Ghana face Chad on Friday in the World Cup qualifiers.

  • GFA President Kurt Okraku meets Israeli Ambassador hold talks on strengthening football ties

GFA President Kurt Okraku meets Israeli Ambassador hold talks on strengthening football ties

President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Kurt Edwin Simeon-Okraku, recently met with the Israeli Ambassador to Ghana, Roey Gilad, to discuss ways to strengthen football cooperation between the two countries.

The meeting, held at the Israeli Embassy in Accra on Wednesday, March 19, 2025, focused on deepening ties through various football initiatives.

Ghana and Israel already share a strong football connection, with many Ghanaian male and female players competing in Israeli clubs. The bond was further strengthened when Israeli coach Avram Grant led the Black Stars from 2015 to 2017, taking them to the final of the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations. Another Israeli, Eyal Lachman, also coached Ghanaian club Hearts of Oak.

During the meeting, both parties explored ideas for cultural and sporting events to celebrate their shared football history. They also discussed technical exchange programs to enhance the skills of Ghanaian coaches, medical staff, and marketing professionals by tapping into Israel’s expertise in sports science and football technology.

The meeting also included discussions about Ghana’s U-15 national team taking part in a tournament in Israel. This opportunity would give young players valuable international experience and help them develop their skills.

Additionally, the GFA is looking to partner with Israeli businesses in Ghana to support football development, including improving infrastructure and grassroots programs.

A key focus of the discussions was coaching exchange programs. Ghanaian coaches would travel to Israel to learn about modern football technology, while Israeli experts would visit Ghana to share their knowledge.

There were also plans to bring specialists to train local pitch managers, ensuring better playing conditions in the country.

GFA President Kurt Edwin Simeon-Okraku expressed confidence that this collaboration would greatly benefit Ghanaian football.

“This engagement with the Israeli Ambassador and his team is a great step towards strengthening our football ecosystem. By leveraging Israel’s expertise in sports science and technology, we can create more opportunities for Ghanaian footballers, coaches, and administrators.”

The GFA is dedicated to building strong international partnerships to improve football in Ghana. It will continue working with key stakeholders to put these plans into action in the coming months.

Also present at the meeting were Michael Osekre, Chief of Staff to the GFA President, and Janice Odonkor, Head of Business Development at the GFA.

“We’ve been talking a lot. He’s been engaging from the first day with the players, and I am very, very happy that he’s on board,” he added.

Schäfer is widely known for leading Cameroon to win the 2002 AFCON title.

Former President John Dramani Mahama made an unexpected visit to the Black Stars during their training at the Accra Sports Stadium on Wednesday.

His visit was meant to lift the team’s spirits ahead of their important 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Chad and Madagascar.

Speaking to the players and coaches, Mahama admitted the team had faced challenges recently but said he believed they could recover and perform well.

“We didn’t qualify for the AFCON. But even when we did, we crashed out early last time. We haven’t given up on you. We still believe the Black Stars can find its glory again, and that depends on you, the technical team, and the management committee,” he said.

Reaffirming the nation’s support, he emphasized that success depends on the team’s commitment and effort.

“The goals will come from these feet right here. It takes sacrifice and strength. We enjoy watching you play for your clubs, and we expect the same dedication for the national team,” he added.

The Black Stars will face Chad on March 21 before taking on Madagascar three days later in Morocco as they continue their quest for World Cup qualification.

Ghana’s journey in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) has hit a rough patch recently. For the first time in over two decades, the Black Stars failed to qualify for the 2025 AFCON tournament, which will be held in Morocco later this year2. The failure to qualify has sparked disappointment among fans, players, and officials alike. Former Ghanaian football star Michael Essien described the situation as “sad” but urged the nation to move forward and focus on future competitions. “I was just not ready for that job” – Michael Essien on Black Stars assistant coach role

Former Ghana midfielder Michael Essien has explained why he turned down the chance to become the Black Stars’ assistant coach.

Before Otto Addo was reappointed on a three-year deal after Chris Hughton’s dismissal, reports suggested that the Ghana Football Association (GFA) had offered Essien the role.

However, he rejected the offer, and the GFA instead appointed John Paintsil and Joseph Laumann as Addo’s assistants.

Essien, who is currently an assistant coach at Danish club FC Nordsjaelland, said he did not feel ready for the job.

“I would not say I refused, but I was just not ready for that job,” he told Sporty FM.

“I was approached by Otto Addo and the president [Kurt Okraku], but I felt I was not ready,” he added.

Although Essien never won a major trophy with Ghana as a player, he is still hopeful that the team will achieve success in the future.

“It’s sad I couldn’t win any trophy during my time with the Black Stars, but I am convinced the team will win a trophy soon.”

Meanwhile, following Ghana’s failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), Joseph Laumann has been replaced by Desmond Ofei as one of the assistant coaches.

High expectations and family – Alfred Duncan explains why he snubbed return to Black Stars

Former Ghanaian midfielder Alfred Duncan has disclosed that he rejected offers to return to the Black Stars, despite being approached by the team’s last two head coaches.

Duncan, who currently plays for Venezia, made his debut for Ghana in 2016 during an Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against Mozambique. However, in 2019, he decided to retire from international football.

In an interview with Sporty FM, Duncan explained that he had already made up his mind about stepping away from the national team and found it difficult to change his decision

“Yes, I think for the past two years, the two new coaches both reached out to me and wanted to work with me. But for me, it was very difficult to go back to the national team because the expectations were really high. I had already made a decision, and I was stable with where I wanted to be,” he said.

Duncan further cited personal reasons, particularly his desire to spend more time with his family, as a key factor in his decision.

“During the international break, I am able to spend more time with my family. That was one of the best decisions I ever made because I had less time with them before. Making that decision really helped me a lot, so I wasn’t willing to go back and abandon that situation,” he added.

“Instead of having separate management teams for all the national teams, I think we need to move away from that approach. It’s high time we established a proper structure so that, for example, when the U-20 team is playing, two or three people can be appointed to oversee it,” he said.

He also pointed out how involvement in these committees often discourages members from holding the Ghana Football Association (GFA) accountable.

“It’s as if no one can speak up. If the FA is doing something wrong, they remain silent because they want to stay on the management team,” he added.

Following Ghana’s poor performance in the 2025 AFCON qualifiers, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) has set up a new management committee to oversee the national team.

The newly appointed members include GFA Executive Council member Dr. Randy Abbey, former Black Stars captain Stephen Appiah, Medeama SC President Moses Armah, FC Samartex President Richard Nsenkyire, and Greater Accra Regional Football Association Chairman Samuel Aboabire.

  • 2026 WCQ: Black Stars squad to be announced this week

2026 WCQ: Black Stars squad to be announced this week

Black Stars head coach Otto Addo is set to announce his squad this week for Ghana’s upcoming 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Chad and Madagascar.

This will be the team’s first gathering in 2024 as they prepare for their fifth and sixth qualifying matches later this month. After failing to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), Ghana is eager to make a strong comeback.

The team’s AFCON elimination drew heavy criticism, but the Black Stars are now focused on securing a spot at the 2026 World Cup, which will be hosted in the USA, Canada, and Mexico.

Otto Addo is expected to select a competitive squad for these important games. His final player list has already been submitted to the Ghana Football Association (GFA) Executive Council for approval.

Several important players, including Alidu Seidu, Abdul Fatawu Issahaku, Abdul Mumin, and Daniel Kofi Kyereh, will miss Ghana’s upcoming matches due to injuries.

There is growing speculation that Andre Ayew, who has not played for the Black Stars since the 2023 AFCON in Ivory Coast, might return to the squad.

Meanwhile, Jordan Ayew is expected to wear the captain’s armband for both games.

Ghana, currently second in Group I, will host Chad at the Accra Sports Stadium on Friday, March 21, at 19:00 GMT. The team will then travel to Morocco to face Madagascar at the Grand Stade d’Al Hoceima on Monday, March 24.

I was very aware of the pressures of coaching Black Stars – Chris Hughton

Former Ghana head coach Chris Hughton has admitted that he was fully aware of the pressure that came with managing the Black Stars.

The former Newcastle United and Nottingham Forest boss initially joined the team as a technical advisor before being appointed head coach on an 18-month contract following Otto Addo’s resignation after the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

However, Hughton failed to meet expectations, and after Ghana’s disappointing group-stage exit at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Ivory Coast, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) confirmed his departure.

In an interview with Voice Online, Hughton acknowledged the intense demands that come with coaching the Black Stars.

“I knew the pressure of taking the job when I took it, and if you’re not getting the right results, then you will know about it,” he said.

The GFA subsequently reappointed Otto Addo on a three-year contract, with an option for a two-year extension, as Hughton’s successor.

Since his dismissal as Ghana’s head coach in 2024, Hughton has remained unattached.

Ghanaians are “football-mad” – Ex-Black Stars coach Chris Hughton

Former Black Stars coach Chris Hughton has recognized the intense passion Ghanaians have for football.

Initially appointed as the team’s technical director, Hughton took over as head coach following Otto Addo’s departure after the 2022 World Cup.

However, his time at the helm failed to meet expectations. After Ghana’s early exit from the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Ivory Coast, where they were eliminated in the group stage, he was relieved of his duties.

“Working in Africa is very different. I worked for a nation that is football-mad. One thing Ghanaians love, apart from the Premier League, is the Black Stars,” Hughton told Voice Online in an interview.

The former Newcastle United and Nottingham Forest manager admitted he was aware of the immense pressure from the start, knowing that results would ultimately determine his fate.

“I knew the pressure of taking the job when I took it, and if you’re not getting the right results, then you will know about it.”

Following Hughton’s exit, Otto Addo was reappointed as Ghana’s head coach on a three-year contract.

World Cup qualifiers: Bring Andre back – Abdul Salam calls

Renowned football administrator Abdul Salam Yakubu has urged the handlers of the Black Stars to recall Andre Ayew ahead of the upcoming World Cup qualifiers.

Abdul Salam Yakubu made his statement on Asempa FM on Friday, March 7, 2025. He emphasized the importance of recalling Andre Ayew to the Black Stars ahead of the upcoming World Cup qualifiers.

Ayew, who has been absent from the Black Stars since the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), was left out following Otto Addo’s reappointment as head coach in March 2024.

However,Mr Salam has emphasized the importance of recalling Andre Ayew to the Black Stars ahead of the upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Chad and Madagascar.

Yakubu highlighted Ayew’s commitment and recent impressive form for Le Havre in the French Ligue 1 as key reasons for his inclusion in the national team.

The 34-year-old has netted four goals in 17 appearances, proving his continued relevance at the top level.

With Ghana set to regroup later this month for crucial 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Chad and Madagascar, the New Edubiase United owner believes Ayew’s experience and leadership would be invaluable to the squad.

“I believe Andre Ayew must be given a chance at the Black Stars again,” he told Asempa FM’s Ultimate Sports Show.

“We all know Ayew’s commitment to the Black Stars, and we know if he doesn’t score, he will assist, so I believe Andre Ayew must be given the chance again because we need him,” he added.

Currently sitting second in Group I with nine points, the Black Stars will host Chad at the Accra Sports Stadium on Friday, March 21, at 19:00 GMT.

They will then travel to Morocco to take on Madagascar at the Grand Stade d’Al Hoceima on Monday, March 24.

2026 World Cup: Resolve captaincy controversy to ensure unity – Kwesi Appiah’s formula for Black Stars’ success

Former Ghana captain and coach Kwesi Appiah has expressed confidence in the Black Stars’ chances of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup but emphasized the need to resolve the ongoing captaincy debate.

The issue of leadership within the team has sparked discussions, particularly in the absence of Andre Ayew and Thomas Partey. The armband has changed hands multiple times, with Mohammed Kudus and Jordan Ayew both leading the team in recent matches. However, this inconsistency has drawn criticism from fans, former players, and analysts.

In Ghana’s AFCON qualifiers against Sudan in October, Kudus was given the captaincy in the absence of Ayew and Partey. The following month, Jordan Ayew took over for the final group stage matches against Angola and Niger, further fueling debates over the team’s leadership structure.

Appiah believes that establishing a clear and stable captaincy will be crucial in maintaining team cohesion and boosting Ghana’s World Cup qualification campaign.

“I am hoping that what I have heard is true, that they’re trying to sort out the captaincy issue. If there are other issues, I hope they resolve them, but you know I’m not with the team, so it’s not everything that I know.”

“If they’re able to sort the captaincy issue, then it’s okay, because the players we have are quality, and then we make sure there’s no division in the team. Without unity, we cannot achieve anything, so I hope and pray that Ghana will qualify for the World Cup” (Via Luv FM).

Former Black Stars captain Kwesi Appiah has emphasized the importance of resolving the team’s captaincy situation to strengthen unity and stability within the squad.

With Thomas Partey declining a permanent leadership role, Jordan Ayew has officially been named captain, while Alexander Djiku has been appointed as his deputy.

Ghana is looking to bounce back from a disappointing 2025 AFCON qualification campaign, which saw them fail to secure a spot in the tournament for the first time in two decades. The team will shift focus to the upcoming 2026 World Cup qualifiers, with crucial fixtures against Chad and Madagascar scheduled for the March international break.

The Black Stars will host Chad at the Accra Sports Stadium on March 17 before traveling to Morocco for a key encounter against Madagascar. Currently, Ghana shares the top spot in Group I with Comoros, both sitting on nine points from four matches.

Ghana’s sixth fixture in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Madagascar has been rescheduled to take place in Morocco on Monday, March 24, 2025.

Originally set to be played in Antananarivo, the match was relocated after Madagascar’s national stadium failed to meet FIFA’s approval standards. The game will now be hosted at the Grand Stade d’Al Hoceima in Morocco.

This encounter follows Ghana’s crucial clash against Chad at the Accra Sports Stadium on March 21, marking the start of their international break.

The Black Stars are eager to turn the page on a disappointing 2024 campaign, which saw them win just two games and miss out on the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

With nine points from four matches, Ghana currently shares the top spot in Group I with Comoros. Their victories so far have come against Madagascar, Mali, and the Central African Republic, with their only setback being a loss to Comoros.

Having previously qualified for four World Cup tournaments—Germany 2006, South Africa 2010, Brazil 2014, and Qatar 2022—Ghana is determined to secure a ticket to the expanded 2026 edition, which will be co-hosted by the USA, Canada, and Mexico.

Mahama promise transparency, says no secrecy on how much govt spends on Ghana’s National Team

President John Dramani Mahama has assured Ghanaians of full transparency regarding government spending on the country’s national teams, emphasizing that all budget allocations must be made public.

This commitment aims to ensure that taxpayers’ money is used responsibly and that the public is informed about how funds are allocated and spent.

Delivering the 2025 State of the Nation Address in Parliament today, Mahama reiterated his commitment to accountability in sports financing, stating, “There would be no secrecy in how much the government spends on our national teams. The budgets presented by the SA and other sports associations must be known to the public. After all, it is the taxpayers’ money that is used to fund these activities.

He also reiterated the Sports Ministry’s inclusion in his government’s reset agenda in waste and unnecesary expendture cut.

“The reduction in government expenditure waste applies to all sectors of the economy, including the Ministry of Sports and Recreation” he added.

His comments come amid growing public interest in how state resources are allocated to sports, with calls for greater scrutiny and efficiency in government spending.

It will be recalled that in the past, the GFA has been criticized for not being transparent about their expenditures. For example, former Sports Ministers Isaac Asiamah and Mustapha Ussif did not provide detailed breakdowns of the state’s expenditure during major tournaments like AFCON 2019 and AFCON 2021. This lack of transparency has led to growing scrutiny and demands for accountability.

Meanwhile, many Ghanaians are frustrated with the team’s poor performance and believe that the funds could be better utilized elsewhere. The Black Stars have struggled in recent years, failing to qualify for major tournaments and not living up to their former glory.

Change Black Stars technical team for the better – Otumfuo

Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has voiced his concerns regarding the underwhelming performance of the Black Stars, calling for a comprehensive overhaul of the team’s technical staff.

Ghana’s national soccer team has faced significant challenges in recent times, failing to advance beyond the group stage in both the 2021 and 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournaments held in Cameroon and Ivory Coast, respectively.

The team’s fortunes took a further hit under coach Otto Addo, as they were unable to secure a spot in the 2025 AFCON. This marks the first time in twenty years that Ghana has not qualified for the prestigious continental competition.

The four-time African champions experienced a disheartening qualification campaign, managing only three draws and suffering three defeats, leaving them at the bottom of their group with a mere three points.

During a visit to the Manhyia Palace on Friday, February 14, by Sports and Recreation Minister Kofi Adams, Otumfuo expressed his dissatisfaction with the team’s poor results.

He stressed the importance of making changes to the technical team to regain the squad’s competitive edge.

“The Black Stars is now a disgrace,” he said. “Get the team a good technical team to man it.

“It is not in good form currently, breaking people’s hearts always. They exited the last tournament quite earlier than expected.”

Otumfuo also stressed the importance of selecting dedicated and deserving players for the national team.

“The right players must be called in. I have told them at Kotoko that good players must be allowed to play not those with some form of affiliation.”

Despite missing out on AFCON 2025, the Black Stars will soon regroup for their 2026 World Cup qualifiers, where they will face Chad and Madagascar in Matchday five and six fixtures.

Ghana’s Minister of Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, has pledged to do everything possible to ensure the Black Stars secure a place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Following intense criticism over their surprising failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON)—the first time in twenty years—the national team has faced significant backlash. Ghana finished at the bottom of Group F, earning just three points from six matches.

With the Black Stars set to resume their World Cup qualification campaign next month against Chad and Madagascar, Mr. Adams has promised fans that he will leave no stone unturned in helping the team secure their fifth World Cup appearance, scheduled to be held in the USA, Canada, and Mexico.

“Whatever I will have to do as the Sports Minister to ensure that Ghana qualifies for the 2026 World Cup, I’ll do it,” the Member of Parliament for the Buem Constituency told Asempa FM’s Ultimate Sports Show.

He acknowledged the disappointment of missing out on AFCON but emphasized that the World Cup remains a top priority.

“It is unfortunate that African countries will be meeting at AFCON, and Ghana will not be present, but the World Cup is different, and I know the government also has an interest in that.”

Mr. Adams also called for unity and support from Ghanaians as the team embarks on this crucial journey.

“If the team has wronged anyone, I will appeal that we all unite for the good cause of the team and ensure that we qualify for the tournament.”

Ghana will host Chad on March 17 before traveling to face Madagascar on March 24 in two decisive fixtures.

GFA is under no obligation to consult anyone before making decisions – Fred Acheampong

Executive Committee Member of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Fredrick Acheampong, also known as Fred Achie, has asserted that the GFA has the authority to independently make decisions regarding the Black Stars.

He emphasized that while the public is welcome to express their opinions on these decisions, they cannot force the GFA to reverse them.

Acheampong further clarified that the GFA is not obliged to consult the public or external stakeholders for input on their decisions, only those within the association have a say, and no single individual can exert influence over their actions.

“The Ghana Football Association (GFA) do not need to consult anyone to make a decision on the Black Stars. We are the administrators of the various national teams, and we don’t need to consult anyone in making decisions,” Acheampong told Asempa FM.

The backlash followed the GFA’s decision to retain Otto Addo as the head coach of the Black Stars, with John Paintsil continuing in his role as the assistant coach.

Additionally, their appointment of Winfried Anton Schafer, a German coach who led Cameroon to victory in the 2002 African Cup of Nations (AFCON), as the Technical Advisor sparked further controversy.

Minister-designate for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, has revealed that concerns over the future of Black Stars head coach Otto Addo extend beyond fans, with some members of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) and even players expressing uncertainty.

Otto Addo has faced intense scrutiny following Ghana’s failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). Despite the backlash, the GFA’s Executive Council voted to retain him, leading to a restructuring of his technical team ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

Speaking on Sporty FM, Adams admitted that doubts about Addo’s leadership persist within the football community, including from individuals directly involved in the national team setup.

“The future of Otto Addo is a matter of concern to me. This concern of stay or not stay is not just coming from the non-playing body—that is what is of great concern to me,” he stated.

“Not just the fans, but the engagements I have had go beyond that to even the playing body and some members of GFA (current and former).”

Adams, who faced vetting before Parliament’s Appointments Committee on Thursday, 30th January, is set to assume his role as Minister for Sports and Recreation in the coming days should he be approved by Parliament.

It was tough, not everyone agreed – GFA’s Henry Asante Twum on keeping Otto Addo

Communications Director of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Henry Asante Twum, has revealed that the decision to retain Otto Addo as head coach of the Black Stars was not an easy one.

Despite facing intense criticism for the team’s underwhelming performances, particularly the failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), Addo’s position was debated among the GFA Executive Council members.

However, after careful consideration, the council ultimately opted to keep the 49-year-old in charge. Speaking on Sporty FM, Asante Twum admitted that the decision was a tough one, with many members uncertain about Addo’s future.

“It was a very tensed atmosphere where the Council members espoused their feelings and their positions on the future of the technical team. Not all of them said yes. It was very very difficult,” he said.

“I sat there for hours and still, it got to the point where there was a stalemate so the meeting had to be adjourned and for them to reconvene again so it was tough.

“It was not just a straightforward decision that after hearing from him or listening to him, we want to say yes or we are all saying yes to his continuous stay in office or otherwise. It was very tough. The end product is that he will stay based on the council’s stay. But the factors that led to the decision was very very tough.”

When the team reconvenes in March for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, Addo will be determined to silence his critics and demonstrate his capability.

GFA unveils new Black Stars technical team as Laumann exits, Paintsil stays

The long-awaited restructuring of the Black Stars’ technical team was finally confirmed late on Tuesday, January 28, 2025.

Anticipating mixed reactions over their decision to retain Otto Addo, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) quietly unveiled the revamped technical setup.

Otto Addo remains as head coach, with John Paintsil unexpectedly keeping his role as assistant coach. In a notable addition, experienced German coach Winfried Anton Schäfer, who led Cameroon to an AFCON victory in 2002, has been appointed as a technical advisor.

Additionally, Desmond Ofei, previously the head coach of the Black Satellites, has been promoted to assistant coach, replacing Joseph Laumann.

For the first time, the Black Stars have added a sports psychologist to their backroom staff. Kris Perquy, a seasoned professional with 17 years of experience, has been appointed to provide psychological support to the team.

In a bid to enhance tactical preparation, Belgian video analyst Gregory De Grauwe will lead the Video Analysis Unit. With a UEFA License B Coaching certificate and a Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education, De Grauwe has honed his expertise with clubs like Sporting Lokeren and K. Beerschot VA.

The team has also bolstered its logistics department by appointing two highly experienced equipment officers—Issah Amadou from Asante Kotoko and Abdul Rahman Alhassan from Hearts of Oak. Together, they bring an impressive 53 years of combined experience in managing football equipment.

The restructured technical team will have its first major test in March when they guide the Black Stars in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

Accra Sports Stadium Presidential entrance filled with trash, exposed electric cables others – Sources

Presidential entrance of the Accra Sports Stadium has turned into a dumping ground, just weeks ahead of Ghana’s 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

The Black Stars are set to face Chad at home, but the facility, which hosted Ghana’s last competitive match, is in poor condition.

A visit by JoySports revealed that while the pitch is in good shape for games, other key areas of the stadium are far from presentable for officials, guests, and fans.

The pathway leading to the Presidential entrance is cluttered with discarded items such as broken fridges, faulty machines, damaged plastic chairs, tables, and other trash.

The situation worsens with the facility’s utilities. The water supply system is in a poor state, and the electricity room is no better. The room has no functioning lights, exposed wires are scattered around, and there’s even a small hole dug inside.

A room near the scoreboard is filled with dirt and has holes believed to be caused by rats. The overall structure of the stadium is also in poor shape, with visible cracks that suggest it is becoming weaker.

The condition of the washrooms is appalling, with a strong, unpleasant smell making them almost unusable.

Offices, including the Head of the Technical Department’s workspace, are in terrible shape. They have no electricity, broken ceilings, and cracked tiles.

The Ghana Project Monitoring Group (GPMG), an organization focused on highlighting neglected and faulty projects across the country, has expressed interest in working with the Sports Ministry to address the stadium’s poor maintenance and hygiene issues.

“Our motive is to draw the attention of the authorities and government that there’s something wrong here and what can we do,” member of GPMG Ernest Banama told JoySports.

“Not only drawing the attention, we use our own hands to start something and wait for the government to assist us.”

Otto Addo has lost the dressing room completely – Saddick Adams explains how

Black Stars coach Otto Addo is said to have had disagreements with some key players in the team over strict rules he has introduced, according to top sports journalist Saddick Adams.

Saddick Adams explained that Otto Addo’s efforts to bring discipline to the team may have upset some players who are not happy with his new regulations.

The journalist, also known as Sports Obama, revealed that rules like mandatory breakfast, fines for lateness, and publicly scolding players are some of the measures Otto Addo has put in place, which have not been well received by the team.

Additionally, some players feel that playing for the national team affects their club performance, as they struggle to regain their form after national duties.

“Otto Addo has lost the dressing room. One player told me that Otto Addo introduced some quite unpopular things among the playing body.

“He has introduced compulsory breakfast, which is a norm at the club level. He also instituted fines for lateness. One player told me that they were late for a meeting and he scolded them in front of the players.

“Otto Addo has lost all the key players except for just two. He has lost most of them. Due to some of the issues he took during the qualifiers, he lost some of the players.

“The real issue is that some of the players believe that it takes them about five games to recover their form whenever they come to play for the country. There is a toxic environment in the team,” he said this on the ABN Sports segment.

Saddick Adams’ comments come as it has been confirmed that Otto Addo will continue as the head coach of the Black Stars.

Dr. Randy Abbey, chairman of the Black Stars Management Committee, has stated that the GFA will keep Otto Addo as head coach but will replace the assistant coaches.

“We think the GFA has made its decision already,” Abbey told Original FM.

“The GFA is keeping Otto Addo. Right now, the focus is on the World Cup qualifiers. We will be ensuring that we reverse the poor trend of results that led to the team’s failure to qualify for AFCON. We need to change course and put the Black Stars back on the winning path,” he earlier said.

“GFA is keeping Otto Addo” – Dr. Randy Abbey confirms

GFA Executive Council member Dr. Randy Abbey has confirmed that Otto Addo will continue as the Black Stars head coach, despite the team failing to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Ghana performed poorly under Addo, earning just three points from six matches with three losses and three draws—one of their worst AFCON qualifying campaigns.

Many fans have called for Addo to be sacked, especially since he was reappointed in March 2024 on a long-term contract.

However, in an interview with Original FM, Dr. Abbey, who is also the Black Stars Management Committee Chairman, stated that the GFA has no plans to remove the 49-year-old coach.

“I think the GFA has taken the decision already,” Dr Abbey stated.

He further disclosed plans to overhaul the team’s backroom staff to provide Addo with the necessary support for success.

Despite the AFCON disappointment, Addo has revived Ghana’s World Cup hopes with crucial victories against Mali and the Central African Republic in the ongoing qualifiers.

The GFA remains confident that with the right support system, he can steer the team back to success.

“The GFA is keeping Otto Addo. Immediately, it’s about the World Cup qualifiers that start in March, and to ensure that the poor trend of results that led to non-qualification for AFCON is reversed to put the Black Stars back on the winning path,” Dr Abbey emphasized.

Ghana will play against Chad and Madagascar in March for the 5th and 6th rounds of the World Cup qualifiers.

This is Otto Addo’s second time as head coach of the Black Stars. He first led the team to qualify for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. After Ghana’s poor performance at the AFCON in Ivory Coast, he was reappointed in early 2024.

  • Future of Otto Addo to be decided at next Executive Council Meeting

Future of Otto Addo to be decided at next Executive Council Meeting

Communications Director of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Henry Asante Twum, has announced that the Executive Council will decide Otto Addo’s future in their upcoming meeting.

The 49-year-old coach is under pressure after failing to qualify the Black Stars for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), ending a 20-year streak of participation in the tournament.

Ghana’s performance in the qualifiers was disappointing, with three losses and three draws in six matches, leaving them at the bottom of Group F with only three points. In 2024, the team managed just two wins out of 10 games.

Calls for Addo’s removal have been growing following this poor performance.

While Addo has submitted his technical report to the Executive Council, Asante Twum clarified that no final decision has been made yet.

“To be honest, the very day Otto Addo presented his report, the Executive Council held about a seven-hour meeting, and all the members of the Council, except Kwesi Appiah, made their views known,” he told Asempa FM’s Ultimate Sports Show.

“The areas of concern, including player management, tactics, and call-ups, were all discussed, but I cannot read the body language of everybody and say they want him [Otto Addo] to stay or go. What I know is that there was no decision made.”

“What I know is that a decision will be made at the next Executive Council meeting,” he added.

Addo, who took over from Chris Hughton, was reappointed in March 2024 on a three-year contract with a two-year extension option.

  • ‘Poor’ – Kwesi Nyantakyi on Otto Addo’s performance as Black Stars coach

‘Poor’ – Kwesi Nyantakyi on Otto Addo’s performance as Black Stars coach

Former Ghana Football Association (GFA) president Kwesi Nyantakyi has expressed disappointment in Otto Addo’s tenure as head coach of the Black Stars.

Addo, who was hired in March 2024 on a three-year deal, has faced heavy criticism for failing to qualify the national team for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON)—a setback Ghana hasn’t experienced in 20 years.

In six qualifying matches, the Black Stars failed to secure a single win, finishing last in Group F with only three points.

Over the past year, the senior team recorded just two wins in 14 games, with Addo in charge of 10 of those matches.

Nyantakyi, a former CAF 1st Vice President, believes these poor results clearly show that Addo has not lived up to expectations.

“With the performance of the Black Stars under Otto Addo, everything shows that he is not doing well,” he told Asempa FM’s Sports Nite.

“The last time Ghana failed to qualify for an AFCON tournament was twenty years ago and under Otto Addo, we did not qualify so he has not performed.”

While Nyantakyi refrained from directly calling for Addo’s dismissal, he emphasized that the results speak for themselves.

“I am not in the position to say he has to be sacked or stay but the numbers are there for all of us to see,” he added.

The GFA has not yet decided on Otto Addo’s future after the team’s failure to qualify for the AFCON.

However, the Black Stars are scheduled to meet again in March for their World Cup qualifying matches.

GFA mulls appointment of technical director to assist Otto Addo

Ghana Football Association (GFA) is reportedly considering hiring a technical director to assist Black Stars head coach Otto Addo.

This comes as the 47-year-old coach’s future hangs in the balance following Ghana’s failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco.

For the first time in 20 years, the four-time African champions missed out on Africa’s biggest football tournament after finishing last in Group F. They managed only three points from six games, with three draws and three losses.

The disappointing performance has put the Ghana Football Association (GFA) under heavy pressure to review its coaching setup. Otto Addo, who signed a three-year contract in March 2024 with an option for a two-year extension, is now facing calls for his dismissal.

In response, the GFA held a long meeting with Addo and his technical team, announcing that further discussions with stakeholders would decide his future.

Meanwhile, reports suggest the GFA is considering hiring a technical director to work alongside Addo as the team prepares for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

If this plan goes through, Addo is likely to remain as head coach, but changes in the backroom staff are expected.

Additionally, GFA Communications Director Henry Asante Twum has revealed that Otto Addo has not been paid for four months.

“It is true we owe Otto Addo. As of the last update from the Sports Ministry, there are salary arrears, which unfortunately is not a new issue,” Twum said in an interview with Asempa FM’s Ultimate Sports.

“We have held several meetings with the Ministry about the payments. Otto Addo understands the challenges, and we are working to resolve the issue.”

Following the disappointing AFCON qualifiers, the Black Stars will aim to bounce back with a stronger performance in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, starting with matches against Chad and Madagascar in March.

Sulley Muntari and Menaye’s marriage “not genuine” – Charlie Dior

Renowned Ghanaian fashion stylist Charlie Dior has shared his thoughts on the marriage of former Black Stars player Sulley Muntari and model Menaye Donkor, questioning its authenticity.

According to Dior, the couple’s decision to keep their relationship private and away from public scrutiny raises doubts. He argued that their unwillingness to share details about their marriage gives the impression of perfection, which he believes might not reflect reality.

“We hear street talk about them. The fact that they don’t talk about it or put it out there, for me, that’s not genuine. They are portraying everything as perfect at home, which I don’t think is true,” he said on GhOne TV.

Charlie argued that celebrity couples should be more public due to their status in society.

“We know there’s pressure on celebrity marriages from the public and family. But if you have that celebrity status, you owe us something. You owe us some explanation in some way.”

Charlie Dior compared Sulley and Menaye’s marriage to Ghanaian musician Praye TiaTia and his wife, Selly Galley, calling them his power couple.

“My power couple would be Selly Galley and Praye Tiatia. I follow them on Instagram, and they seem more relatable than Sulley Muntari and Menaye.”

“Because they (Praye and Selly Galley) make it more relatable. I follow them on Instagram, and they share their struggles with us. When she was expecting, she shared her journey, which feels more genuine,” he shared.

Sulley Muntari and his wife, Menaye Donkor, have been married since 2010 and have two children.

The couple has maintained a low profile, with their last public appearance taking place in 2021.

Captain of the Black Stars, Andre Ayew, scored a goal for Le Havre in their 5-1 defeat to Marseille in the French Ligue 1 on January 5, 2025.

The goal came as Ayew faced his former club, and he was clearly emotional when he received a standing ovation from Marseille fans.

With only five minutes remaining in the match, Antoine Joujou sent a cross into the box. As the Marseille goalkeeper rushed out, Ayew expertly headed the ball over him into the net.

Out of respect for his former team, Ayew chose not to celebrate his goal.

This goal was his first of the 2024/25 league season.

Two minutes before the final whistle, Le Havre’s coach, Didier Digard, substituted Ayew, allowing him to be honored with another standing ovation from the fans at Stade Vélodrome.

They removed Nyantakyi because he wouldn’t let them have his way – Asamoah Gyan claims

Former captain of the Black Stars, Asamoah Gyan, has strongly supported Kwesi Nyantakyi, the former president of the Ghana Football Association (GFA). He believes that Nyantakyi was removed due to sabotage and personal agendas within Ghanaian football.

During a heartfelt Instagram Live session on Thursday, Gyan expressed his concerns about the decline of football in Ghana since Nyantakyi’s departure. He praised Nyantakyi as a leader who focused on unity and growth in the sport.

“When Nyantakyi was the GFA president, look at where Ghana football was. Nyantakyi was never the kind of person who allowed internal bickering. He wouldn’t accept selfish agendas,” Gyan said.

According to Gyan, Nyantakyi’s refusal to bow to the demands of a “yesa massa” culture made him a target for those who sought to manipulate the system for personal gain.

“If someone came to him with selfish reasons, he wouldn’t accept it. That’s why they wanted him out. Since his removal as GFA president, have you seen what has become of Ghana football?” Gyan questioned, visibly emotional.

The former striker highlighted Nyantakyi’s achievements, including his rise to CAF Vice President, which positioned him as one of the most influential figures in African football. He argued that the former GFA president’s leadership brought stability and direction to Ghana football.

“Nyantakyi was leading us somewhere. He became CAF Vice President; one of the strongest people in African football. But because he wouldn’t entertain their selfish interests, they sabotaged him. They found a way to remove him from his role,” Gyan added.

Since Kwesi Nyantakyi left his position in 2018 due to accusations of wrongdoing, Asamoah Gyan believes that Ghanaian football has experienced a major decline. He blamed those who opposed Nyantakyi for putting their personal interests first, which has led to the current stagnation and lack of progress in the sport.

“People didn’t agree with how Nyantakyi was leading, but the truth is he was doing well. Look at where Ghana football was under his leadership, and look at it now. It’s clear who the problem was,” Gyan said.

So much hatred towards myself ,Shatta Wale because we are non-conformists – Asamoah Gyan

Former Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan recently took to social media to share the struggles he has faced due to his straightforward personality and refusal to conform.

While addressing the Kantamanto fire incident, Gyan shifted focus to discuss how staying genuine has often led to disrespect and criticism.

He compared his experiences to those of musician Shatta Wale, highlighting similarities in how both have dealt with hatred while staying true to their authentic selves.

Asamoah Gyan explained that his humility is often misinterpreted as a weakness, even by individuals, including some accomplished legends, whom he has surpassed in achievements.

He emphasized that he does not hesitate to call out such behavior, even if it results in being perceived as disrespectful.

Gyan likened this approach to Shatta Wale’s, noting that both share a tendency to stand their ground and address issues directly when their values are challenged.

“I’ve achieved more than some of my colleagues, but when I see them, I respect them. Because I respect them, they try to disrespect me and take me for granted. But when they do, I quickly let them know that they cannot try that with me. I make them aware that I have achieved more than them, and it’s out of respect that I obey them,” Gyan explained.

He continued, “That is how Shatta Wale is. When Shatta Wale sees Reggie Rockstone and other legends, he will bow down. It doesn’t mean he is stupid. But when those legends step on his toes, he will insult them to remind them of their place. That guy, watch his life and watch mine. It’s a natural gift.”

Asamoah Gyan further emphasised his belief that he has always been “the chosen one,” receiving opportunities amidst millions of others.

“From my infancy, I’ve always been favoured and chosen for opportunities. You can ask around. It’s a gift that no one can take away from me. I always stand out. Out of thousands, and millions, I’m often the chosen one. That’s how Shatta Wale is. Sometimes, I get shocked by these personal traits,” he stated.

The former Black Stars captain then recounted how years ago, after the success of Shatta Wale’s “Bandana” track, the artiste was blacklisted by the music industry because he refused to conform and remained true to himself.

“When he released ‘Bandana,’ it blew up and he was happy. But fast forward a year or two, I saw Nii Armah (Shatta Wale) on the streets looking dirty and unkempt. According to the facts I gathered, at that time, Shatta Wale didn’t comply with the industry’s expectations. He is a real person. You can’t tell him what to do, so people in the industry wanted to control him. Because he didn’t allow that, they cut his music off from the mainstream media and sabotaged him to the point where he went broke,” Asamoah Gyan said.

He added, “He was from a rich home but decided to go on the streets. I was coming back from training when I saw him, and I parked and cried. My classmate, who after the ‘Bandana’ hit was looking like that, I was hurt. So, I stopped in front of Blue Lagoon, where he stayed with his friends, and interacted with him. I asked what happened, and he said, ‘Life happened.’”

‘We are not accountable to Ghanaians’ – GFA ExCo member Nana Oduro Sarfo

Member of the Ghana Football Association’s (GFA) Executive Council, Nana Sarfo Oduro, has clarified that the GFA is not accountable to fans or the general public.

Instead, he explained that the association’s operations are structured to answer only to football clubs and other stakeholders within the organization.

His remarks came in response to growing demands from Ghanaians for reforms in the GFA, particularly amid concerns over the current state of Ghanaian football.

Speaking in an interview on Asempa FM, Sarfo detailed the association’s governance model, emphasizing that the GFA’s mandate is primarily focused on its member clubs and affiliates, not the wider public.

“The Ghana Football Association is accountable to the football people. It is an organisation. We are accountable to each and every football club. The association is made up of individual clubs. We are not accountable to supporters or Ghanaians,” he said.

Over the years, the GFA has faced intense criticism for the poor state of football in Ghana.

The country’s recent failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations has further fueled frustration among football fans, many of whom are calling for reforms within the association.

Jordan Ayew emerges as Black Stars’ top scorer for the in 2024

Jordan Ayew shone brightly for the Black Stars in 2024, emerging as the team’s top scorer with nine goals.

The 32-year-old forward displayed remarkable consistency, scoring in the Africa Cup of Nations, friendly matches, and World Cup qualifiers.

He netted twice each against Nigeria and Uganda in friendlies and added crucial goals in qualifiers against Mali and the Central African Republic.

Ayew ended the year on a high note, delivering a spectacular goal against Angola in the AFCON qualifiers, solidifying his role as a pivotal player for Ghana.

Despite a tough year for the Black Stars, Ayew stood out with his strong performances, having his best year yet with the national team, thanks to his goal-scoring form.

He also made history in club football by scoring his 40th Premier League goal and his 50th goal in English football in 2024.

Ayew’s leadership was clear when he captained the Black Stars in their second-to-last match of the year, highlighting his importance to both the national team and his club, Crystal Palace.

GFA reportedly planning a dissolution of the entire Black Stars backroom staff

Ghanaian football legends John Paintsil and Fatau Dauda are likely to be relieved of their duties with the Black Stars as the Ghana Football Association (GFA) undertakes a major restructuring of Otto Addo’s coaching team.

According to Ghanasoccernet, the GFA intends to replace all assistant coaches to build a new support system for the head coach.

This decision follows a report Otto Addo submitted to the GFA Executive Council on November 27, 2024, detailing the reasons behind the team’s underwhelming performance.

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has yet to decide Otto Addo’s future as Black Stars coach, following an inconclusive meeting with stakeholders, including the government.

The GFA has not issued an official statement regarding the technical team’s future.

Otto Addo and his staff have faced heavy criticism for failing to qualify the team for the 2025 AFCON in Morocco, marking the first such failure in 20 years.

Ghana finished last in Group F, with three points from six matches. Attention now turns to the 2026 World Cup qualifiers starting in March 2026.

Kwasi Appiah hesitant to confirm interest in Black Stars coaching role

Former Black Stars head coach James Kwasi Appiah Kwasi Appiah appears to avoid giving a clear response about returning as Black Stars coach despite currently being under contract with Sudan.

However, his answer to a question about his possible return to the Black Stars suggested a potential comeback.

Appiah, who has managed the Black Stars in two separate periods (2012–2014 and 2017–2020), expressed openness to a comeback.

The 64-year-old’s name has recently surfaced in discussions as the Ghana Football Association (GFA) considers options for the team, especially as the Black Stars have struggled in recent times.

Many see Appiah as a strong candidate to replace Otto Addo if a change in leadership becomes necessary.

“You have to be professional. Whether you would do it or not, you have to keep it in mind because you never know what will happen,” Appiah said during an interview on Asempa FM on December 11, 2024, when quizzed about coming back for a third time.

“At the moment, I have a contract with Sudan, and I am working with them. As a professional, you don’t jump to conclusions because you never know what the future holds.”

Since leaving the Black Stars coaching job, Appiah has worked at Kenpong Football Academy before accepting the head coach role at Sudan, going the latter to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations and beating Ghana en route to reaching that feat.
