  • President J.A Kufuor charges Black Stars to be ‘physically strong’ at 2022 World Cup

Former President of Ghana, His Excellency John Agyekum Kufuor has urged the Black Stars to be physically strong in bid to advance from the group stage at the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

The Black Stars are paired in Group H alongside Portugal, South Korea and Uruguay.

Ghana will begin the campaign against Portugal on Thursday, November 24 before taking on South Korea and Uruguay in the other Group matches.

“We must be physically strong because our boys tend to fall too easily as far as I can see,” Agyekum Kufuor said as quoted by ghanafa.org.

“The cache with our team in 2006 was the strength. You look at the captain, Stephen Appiah, characters like Sulley Muntari, Asamoah Gyan and you can’t just push them down easily, they were physically fit.”

“One thing I pray you would ensure they go to the pitch with, is this is a man’s game and opponents shouldn’t easily push us down but that doesn’t mean we should commit fouls all over the place but we shouldn’t be walkovers.

He added, “We must be strong, smart and have stamina and towards goal, we must work as a team and I’m sure we will come out with flying colours. You have all my blessings, prayers and support and I hope we make it past the group stage and continue to quarter finals, semi-finals and hopefully the finals.”

“The nation awaits good news from our team.”

Social media was set ablaze on Thursday, October 20, 2022, when Qatari media outlet, Bein Sports announced Black Stars assistant coach, George Boateng as one of their pundits for the World Cup.

George Boateng’s punditry appointment has angered Ghanaians who believe that the coach will not prioritize Ghana’s campaign but the Ghana Football Association have said that he will not leave the Black Stars camp to join Bein Sports.

Communications Director of the GFA, Henry Asante Twum has explained that George Boateng signed the contract to be a Bein Sports pundit during the 2014 World Cup in Brazil but will not work with the media outlet while Ghana is still in the competition.

“George Boateng signed the contract to work as a Bein Sports pundit during the 2014 World Cup in Brazil so let us not think that he just signed the contract. However, he will only go and work as a pundit only when Ghana is out of the World Cup and he is available.”

“George is one hundred percent focused and committed to help Ghana achieve its target at the World Cup. Bein Sports is aware that Boateng is busy with the Black Stars and he told them that Ghana’s target is to reach the final but they still put his name there because he is part of them,” Henry Asante Twum told Accra-based Asempa FM in an interview.

The Black Stars will begin their World Cup campaign against Portugal on November 24, followed by South Korea on November 28, and conclude against Uruguay on December 2 at the Al Janoub Stadium in Al Wakra.

  • Forget about women and focus on World Cup success – Elvis Afriyie Ankrah

Former Ghana Sports Minister Elvis Afriyie Ankrah has called on Black Stars players to focus about the success of the national team instead of women at the 2022 World Cup.

The biggest soccer mundial has been scheduled for November and December this year, with 32 countries set to battle it out for the covetous trophy in Qatar.

Ghana will open their World Cup account against Portugal before taking Uruguay and South Korea respectively.

Speaking to Ghana News Agency, Afriyie Ankrah was of the opinion wives and girlfriends can be a distraction for the Black Stars players.

However, he has urged the players to avoid taking along their partners to the tournament in order to have their eyes on glory.

“The team must be focused and dedicated for the World Cup period,” “This is a tournament for just a few weeks. The players should leave their wives and girlfriends for those few weeks. They should focus on bringing glory to Ghana and themselves.

“It is a privilege to don the national colours, and players should not think they are doing us a favour by representing Ghana.”

The Black Stars qualified for the World Cup after beating Nigeria in a two-legged playoff on away goals.

Coach Otto Addo has yet to name his preliminary squad for the tournament. They are set to play a friendly match against Switzerland, which will be the final match before the team departs for Qatar.

The Black Stars have qualified for three FIFA World Cup tournaments; 2006, 2010, 2014 and now 2022.

In 2006, they were the only African side to advance to the second round of the World Cup in Germany and were the sixth nation in a row from Africa to progress beyond the group stages of the World Cup.

Their best World Cup performance was reaching the quarterfinals of the 2010 World Cup hosted in South Africa.

  • Otto Addo to announce Black Stars World Cup provisional squad on Friday – Reports

Black Stars coach, Otto Addo, is set to announce his provisional squad for Ghana’s upcoming campaign for the 2022 FIFA World Cup on Friday, October 21, 2022.

According to reports, the manager submitted the list to the Ghana Football Association last Friday and is expected to make the list public this week.

Further reports suggest that the German-based trainer has named 35 players in his provisional list. However, it will be later trimmed to 26 a week before the start of the competition in Qatar.

  • 2022 World Cup: Ghana might not qualify from group stage – Nii Odartey Lamptey

Former Ghana international, Nii Odartey Lamptey, says he doubts the Black Stars will progress beyond the group stage of the upcoming FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

The West African country have made a return to the Mundial after failing to play in the last edition hosted in Russia in 2018.

After a two-legged tie, the Black Stars secure qualification at the expense of Nigeria.

Speaking in a yet-to-be-televised interview on Prime Take, Odartey said Uruguay and Portugal have improved since the Black Stars last played them at the 2010 and 2014 World Cups respectively.

“When I saw the group [Ghana was drawn in], personally I wasn’t happy,” the 1991 FIFA Youth Best Player said.

“I would have preferred to be in a group that we have never played with them at the World Cup level before,” he added.

Odartey who revealed in the conversation he retired from the national team in 1996 due to player politics noted that playing familiar foes at the Mundial could be problematic for the 2010 World Cup quarterfinalist which has not improved to be at a level to compete against the best in the world.

“The reason is, football has grown in these countries. I look at Portugal now and they have improved massively since we last played them so playing them again for the second time at the World Cup will be a problem for us, likewise Uruguay.”

When quizzed has not improved, he said “we haven’t grown but I think we have materials that suggest we can grow.

“The technical team is an excellent group: Otto [Addo], Boateng [George], Chris [Hughton], Didi [Dramani], very good blend, but the problem is a young squad which has never played a competition like this before.

“Maybe, ten of them have been to the [African] Cup of Nations before, but how many of them have played together in a tournament?

“So, playing very experienced countries, both Uruguay and Portugal, for me it’s a problem. I pray that we cross the group on the stage.

“We have the quality to progress beyond the group stage but my only question mark is the teams that we are facing,” he added.

Ghana has been housed in a group with Portugal, and Uruguay — two familiar opponents as the Black Stars last played them 2014 and 2010 World Cups, losing both, 2-1 against Portugal and via penalty shootout to Uruguay.

South Korea is the other group member for the tournament that starts on November 20.

  • Stop the joke and nonsense – Armah Senegal slams persons calling for Asamoah Gyan’s return to Black Stars

Ghana football legend, Emmanuel Armah ‘Senegal’ has taken a swipe at persons crusading for the return of Asamoah Gyan to the Black Stars ahead of the 2022 World Cup.

Gyan, 36, has confirmed his desire to feature at the Mundial in Qatar despite being clubless for the past two years.

Armah Senegal, however, speaking in an interview said he is dismayed by the calls which he believes are borne out of ignorance and mere comedy.

According to him, if invitations to the team were about reputation and not form then he also should be called.

“I don’t follow certain things. Those who are talking about it I want to tell them that football is based on your performance. We will use your performance to call you before you play the national team,” he said.

“The players that they’ve mentioned their names to rejoin the Black Stars how many league matches have they played? Which team are they playing now? They are just joking. To be able to play football your performance must be good. You have to perform at the club level. That will create the chance for you to be called. They are just joking and gossiping. That’s what I can say

    .

“Which team Asamoah Gyan is playing now? Give me the answer. Then I can also come and play. Let’s put the jokes aside and gather the players for them to be serious. God will bless you when you are serious. If you are not serious God will not bless you.

“We have to stop making noise and stop the politics in football. Football is not politics. It is a game of passion. We should not envy the players who are performing but we should rather invite those who are performing in their various leagues. In the final squad, some will make it and others will be dropped”, he told Ghanasportspage.com.

Among the persons advocating for Gyan’s inclusion in the Black Stars team for the World Cup is former GFA chairman, Dr. Nyaho Nyaho Tamkloe.

Dr. Nyaho Tamakloe believes that Gyan’s experience and goal-scoring prowess makes him a suitable choice for Ghana’s games.

Gyan last played for the national team during the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations [AFCON] in Egypt in 2019 and he last played for Ghana Premier League side, Legon Cities during the 2019/20 season.

  • 2022 World Cup: It would not make sense to bench Andre Ayew – Ghanaian preacher Dr Lawrence Tetteh

Founder and President of the Worldwide Miracle Outreach, Dr. Lawrence Tetteh says benching Andre Ayew at the 2022 World Cup will not make sense.

The Black Stars skipper has come under criticism in recent times due to his uninspiring performance.

Several Ghanaians have called for his head ahead of the Mundial in Qatar.

However, speaking in an interview on GTV’s Breakfast show, Dr. Lawrence Tetteh explained that the former West Ham star has labored for this country and does not deserve to be treated as a bench warmer.

He argued that Dede Ayew has made so many sacrifices that cannot be overlooked.

Dr. Tetteh also stated that people calling for the Black Stars captain to be benched are only envious of the player’s success.

“Dede Ayew is an inspirer, he has been with the youth team even when he was much younger and they won the u-20 World Cup,” he said.

“He has been consistent with the Black Stars, today as we speak now he is the only one who has more caps than Asamoah Gyan. So you don’t throw away people who have labored.

“This notion that Ghanaians being jealous and envious of people’s success we must stop it. Dede Ayew is a good footballer, he’s played very well and he is currently the captain. If you want to get the unity that we needed for the team, then we need someone like him.

“If we bench him for the new players that have come, you’ve demoralized the team and people will not die for the country. So it doesn’t make sense at all,” Dr. Lawrence Tetteh stated.

Andre Ayew has played at two World Cups with Ghana, 2010, and 2014 tournaments.

Ghana have been housed in Group H alongside Portugal, South Korea, and Uruguay.

The global showpiece is set to kick off from November 20 to December 18.

However, with less than two months to the start of the Mundial, the 22-year-old speaking in an interview revealed that Otto Addo has assured him of a slot in the Black Stars provisional squad.

“The coach sent me a message this (Saturday) morning, he said to me; You are going to be on the list,” Salis said.

“Everyone’s dream is to be at the World Cup and that is my dream too. I want to be in the final 26,” he added.

Former Ghana FA vice-president Fred Pappoe has kicked against the sacking of Black Stars head coach Otto Addo.

Since the friendly defeat to Brazil in September, there have been some calls for the Ghana national team head coach to be fired.

Speaking to Akoma FM in an interview on Tuesday, Fred Pappoe has stressed that taking a decision to sack the Borussia Dortmund tactician will be suicidal.

“Like we did going into the 2006 world cup, the friendly matches are being played not necessarily for results but to look out for individual performance and how systems will look for the coaches.

“We should not confuse ourselves by calling for the sack of the coach due to the performance of the team from a friendly match,” Fred Pappoe said.

The experienced football administrator added, “We should not be quick to pass judgment on whether Otto Addo is good or bad, to me he is good. We cannot change him at this time, For me that will be suicidal.”

The tactician gave this assurance during the official launch of the Elite Talent Identification program on Wednesday, October 5, at the GFA Secretariat in Accra.

Through the project, talented players, both male and female are set to be identified to form the basis for drafting into the various national teams in the future.

“Today is a very happy day for me as the Technical Director of the Football Association and the top management of the Association.

“When I came to Ghana, everyone was talking about the Black Stars but if we have challenges in the Black Stars, nobody is interested in what happens to the foundation of football.

“And today is the day where we implement things in a different way, from the bottom to the top. I think this will bring out good fruits in the next 3 to 5 years,” Bernhard Lippert said at the launch of the new project.

The Ghana FA Technical Director added, “We have a big foundation of top players and the elite program will work with two age groups, 11 to 14.

“Age 11-12 years will have a special training program where they train two times a week same for ages 13-14 for over 40 weeks per year.

“We train with the 12 best players in each District and later we identify from the regional selection team to make up our U-15 team.

“The positive thing for me is to have a true scouting process for our youth national teams in the future.”

Today’s launch was attended by GFA President Kurt Okraku and his Vice Mark Addo.
