Black Stars coach Otto Addohas disclosed that Ghanaian defender Baba Rahman declined an invitation to join the squad for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Mali and the Central African Republic.
Baba Rahman was a notable absentee from the 26-man squad announced on Wednesday, May 29, 2024.
When questioned about Rahman’s omission, despite his stellar performance for PAOK in their Greek league-winning campaign, Addo explained that Rahman is still affected by the negative treatment he received from Black Stars fans during an AFCON qualifier against the Central African Republic in September 2023.
“I spoke with him, but he doesn’t want to come back… I don’t know what happened, but I think it affected him and his family. Personal attacks, criticisms… if it’s tactical or performance-wise, that’s okay, but personal attacks are not good,” he said.
“We will need him for this game, but when I spoke to him, he was very sure that he was not coming back, and it is our fault that he is not coming back,” he added.
The Black Stars are scheduled to face Mali in Bamako on June 6, followed by a match against the Central African Republic at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium on June 10.
Black Stars coach Otto Addohas declined to publicly explain his decision to exclude captain André Dede Ayew from the squad for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Mali and the Central African Republic.
On Wednesday, May 29, 2024, Otto Addo announced his 26-man squad for the upcoming matches, with André Ayew’s absence being particularly notable.
When asked about the decision, Addo chose not to reveal the specifics, mentioning that he had a lengthy discussion with Ayew about the matter.
Despite Ayew’s disagreement with the decision, Addo emphasized that he still holds the Black Stars captain in high regard.
“I had a long talk with André and gave him the reasons why he is not in the squad. I talk to players directly and don’t like to disclose information about our discussions. This is the decision we took, and it’s not like he necessarily agreed, but I still have great respect for him,” he said.

The spokesperson for the Ayew brothers, Fifi Tackie, has seemingly reacted to the exclusion of Black Stars captain Andre Ayew from Otto Addo’s 26-man squad for the upcoming crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying matches against Mali and Central African Republic next month.
At a press briefing on Wednesday, Otoo Addo revealed the squad and mentioned that he had an extensive conversation with Ghana’s record appearance holder before making the decision. However, he chose not to disclose the details of their discussion.
“I had a long chat with Andre and gave him the reason why he is not in the squad. I talk to players directly and I don’t like to put information out about what we spoke about. This is the decision we took and it’s not like he necessarily agreed, but I still have big respect for him,” he said.
In a post after this news, Mr Tackie in a post on X platform reminded Ghanaians of Ayew’s dedication to the country despite the odds. He noted that Ayew remains proud of his country and will forever love his motherland.
“Andre Ayew’s dedication to Ghana is unwavering and lifelong, a commitment that began in his childhood and remains unshakeable to this day. Through thick and thin, he stands proudly as a son of the nation, his passion and loyalty to Ghana burning bright for all to see. Today, tomorrow, and forever, Andre Ayew’s heart beats for Ghana,” he wrote.
Ayew, 34, has netted 5 goals in 19 league appearances for French Ligue 1 side Le Havre this season.
Ghana, currently 4th in their group with three points, will face Mali in Bamako on June 6 before hosting the Central African Republic in Kumasi on June 10.
Black Stars coach Otto Addois set to announce his squad for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Mali and the Central African Republic (CAR) today, Wednesday, May 29, 2024.
Reports indicate that team captain Andre Dede Ayew has been excluded from the lineup for the doubleheader.
According to Angel FM, Ayew, who concluded the French Ligue 1 season with five goals for Le Havre, was not invited by Addo.
The credibility of these reports is bolstered by a list published by Le Havre, detailing players called up for national duty in June.
This list includes Toure Abdoulaye of Guinea, Sangate Arouna of Senegal, Daler Kuzyaev of Russia, Nego Loic of Hungary, Kone Mohamed, and Operi Christopher of Ivory Coast, but notably omits Ayew.
The omission of Ayew is believed to align with Otto Addo’s new strategy for the team.
Addo recently held discussions with senior players such as Thomas Partey, Andre Ayew, and Daniel Amartey to outline his vision for the team’s future.
Addo plans to gradually reduce reliance on veteran players and focus on developing younger talents.
While some experienced players will still feature in the upcoming qualifiers, their involvement is expected to decrease in future selections.
The revamped Black Stars squad is likely to be led by Mohammed Kudus of West Ham United, with significant contributions from Antoine Semenyo, Kamaldeen Sulemana, and Tariq Lamptey, among others.
Black Stars will face Mali in Bamako on June 6, followed by a match against the Central African Republic at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium on June 10.
After missing the last international fixtures in March, the pair are expected to be named in Otto Addo’s 24-man squad to face Mali and the Central African Republic, according to Akoma FM.
The report also mentions that former Medeama striker Jonathan Sowah will make his return to the national team following a successful stint at Al Nassr in Libya.
Sowah is set to replace Atletico Club striker Inaki Williams, who will be absent due to foot surgery.
In terms of new additions, Cagliari midfielder Ibrahim Sulemana is anticipated to be the only debutant in the squad.
The Ghana Football Association (GFA) announced that the Black Stars will commence their training camp on Thursday, May 30, 2024.
According to a statement released by the GFA on Monday, May 27, 2024, the team will undergo a six-day training session before traveling to Bamako on Tuesday, June 4, 2024.

Black Stars coach Otto Addo is expected to face a delay in his arrival in Ghana for the upcoming matches against Mali and the Central African Republic.
Reports indicate that Addo plans to attend the UEFA Champions League final before joining the Black Stars squad.
According to Angel FM, Addo is considering being with the Dortmund delegation at the Champions League final, which occurs just before the Black Stars’ engagements.
Ghana is scheduled to play against Mali in Bamako on June 6, followed by a home game against the Central African Republic at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium on June 10.
The Champions League final is set for Saturday, June 1, 2024, at Wembley Stadium in the UK, featuring a match between Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund.
Addo’s Dortmund will be facing the 14-time champions.
Borussia Dortmund held an official send-off for Otto Addo on April 18, 2024.
While initial reports suggested his arrival in Ghana this week, Angel FM now reports that he may first attend the Champions League final.
It is expected thatOtto Addowill soon announce the squad for the two World Cup qualifying matches.
While his specific responsibilities are yet to be fully disclosed, it is expected that Akonnor will bring his expertise to a significant assembly of football delegates from across Africa.
This crucial conference, taking place in Tanzania, aims to discuss the development of youth football.
Akonnor’s appointment as a CAF consultant marks his return to a prominent role in football governance since his tenure as Ghana’s coach from January 2020 to September 2021.
Since then, he had not held any major positions until this recent appointment.
His distinguished career includes leading top Ghanaian football clubs such as Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko.
Notably, during his time at Kotoko, he secured victory in the Normalization Committee Special Competition and advanced to the group stages of the CAF Confederation Cup.
Additionally, Akonnor served as the Technical Director for the Division One team, Accra Athletic FC.
As the Tanzanian summit progresses, more details about Akonnor’s role with CAF are anticipated, underscoring the significance of his contributions to the meeting.
When a second City player joins in an attempt to dispossess him, Kudus eludes both before taking on a third City player after crossing the center line. He then turns back and releases the ball to a teammate.
The win confirmed Manchester City as the champions of the 2023-2024 Premier League season, securing their fourth straight title.
Meanwhile, Kudus’ goal was his eighth in the Premier League, bringing his total goal involvement to 14, including six assists.
The 23-year-old finished the season as the joint highest-scoring Ghanaian in the Premier League, tied with Bournemouth striker Antoine Semenyo.
Kudus ended the season on a high note, scoring 17 goals and providing seven assists in 47 games across all competitions.
Representing Ghana Premier League club Berekum Chelsea at the time, Addy made his World Cup debut in this unforgettable tournament.
In a comprehensive discussion on Ernest Brew Smith’s YouTube channel, Addy reflected on the intensity of the match against the United States, highlighting it as his most demanding encounter.
He vividly recalls the emotional rush he experienced when he stepped onto the field with the score deadlocked at 1-1.
However, Addy found strength and motivation from an unexpected source—a pre-match visit from Ghana’s then-president, Professor John Evans Atta Mills, who graced the team’s dressing room with his presence.
Professor Mills underscored the historical significance of the match against the US and emphasised the imperative of securing a victory for Ghana.
“Professor Mills visited us in the dressing room to offer motivation.
He encouraged us to seek victory, citing Ghana’s historical edge over the US. He assured us that history was in our favour and that we should strive for a win. Professor Mills expressed his support for our pursuit of victory,” Addy recounted.
Addy also disclosed a remarkable interaction with the iconic African statesman, Nelson Mandela, who made some prescient remarks about Ghana’s upcoming quarter-final match against Uruguay.
“Nelson Mandela met with us before the Uruguay match and foretold the events of the game. He warned us that we would be wronged,” Addy revealed.
Black Stars winger Yaw Yeboah is preparing to marry Gifty Boakye, who was previously in a relationship withBlack Stars deputy skipper Thomas Partey.
The couple recently shared a stunning photo of Yeboah proposing to Boakye, with Boakye proudly displaying her engagement ring in subsequent photos.
Although there’s no confirmed wedding date yet, the couple’s relationship became public in 2023 when Boakye shared glimpses of their time together on social media.
These moments included cheering Yeboah on at the stadium during his matches for Columbus Crew in the USA, as well as sharing intimate moments before games.
Boakye’s split from Partey in 2022 made headlines, but she has now foundhappiness with Yeboah.
Former Ghana international, Mohammed Polo, believes Otto Addo was forced to take up the Black stars job, claiming the former Borussia Dortmund talent coach is not ready for the job.
The Ghana Football Association re-appointed Otto Addo as head coach of the senior national team in March 2024 following the sacking of Chris Hughton after the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Cote d’Ivoire.
Otto Addo was, reportedly, not part of the initially shortlisted coaches for the position, but was a late entry because the GFA preferred him over those who applied.
Speaking to Joy Sports in an interview, Mohammed Polo was critical in his assessment of the GFA’s decision to re-appoint the 48-year-old as Ghana coach.
“Otto was not even ready. He was been forced to take up the job. Those who are ready, give it to them,” Polo said.
“The guy came here and he told you point blank he has a job, and you said, ‘Please, come and do the job,’ as if we without him, nobody can do the job. What is this?
“He came, fine, and qualified us to the World Cup [in Qatar] with only two matches.”
Once upon a time, the Ghana Football Association made an intriguing decision by appointing Milan Zivadinovic, a Yugoslavian coach,to lead the Black Stars.
His tenure became one of the most memorable chapters in Ghanaian football history.
Zivadinovic, affectionately known as Ziva, took charge in May 2002 on a two-year contract, overseeing both the Black Stars and Black Meteors teams.
His appointment came after Fred Osam Duodu’s dismissal following Ghana’s exit from the Nations Cup in Mali.
Reports from Graphic Sports indicate that Ziva received a $15,000 signing-on fee and a monthly salary of $10,000, with accommodation provided at the upscale Wangara Hotel.
However, just four months into his tenure, Ziva abruptly left his position without authorization from the Ghana Football Association, then led by Ben Koufie.
His departure coincided with the cancellation of a scheduled Black Meteors match against Liberia, leading to his classification as Absent Without Leave (AWOL), as reported by Graphic Sports on September 19, 2002.
The BBC report captures events as “Ghana’s Yugoslav coach Milan Zivadinovic has left his job after he was refused leave by the country’s football association to return home.
The GFA denied Zivadinovic permission to travel to attend to family matters after a meeting with the chairman, Ben Koufie, on Tuesday.
“An infuriated GFA executive body immediately summoned an emergency meeting on Wednesday in which the future of the coach was discussed. In a statement issued late in the evening, the GFA said a decision would be reached in the next few days over what to do about the situation.”
In an interview with Accra-based Joy FM, the then vice president of the Ghana Football Association, Emmanuel Owusu-Ansah, revealed that the FA denied the Yugoslavian coach a request for leave.
“When Ziva met the chairman, he was told that there are important assignments ahead in the next few weeks and that it is inappropriate for him to travel now. We have a match against Rwanda in the Nations Cup qualifiers next month after the Black Stars lost 1-0 in the first match against Uganda, so he has to stay and prepare the team.”
Ziva resigns
On September 24, 2002, Ziva sent a letter to the Ghana Football Association, announcing his resignation as head coach of the Black Stars and Black Meteors.
According to the Graphic report, Ziva, at the time of his resignation, had pocketed the $15,000 signing-on fee plus three months salary, which summed up to $45,000.
In a subsequent interview with the BBC, Ziva cited interference and unfavourable weather conditions, which caused him illness, as reasons for his departure.
“I was never given a free hand to do my work. My contract stated that if I was not satisfied with conditions in the first six months, I could leave.”
Former Black Stars captain, Asamoah Gyan, has shed light on the circumstances surrounding his removal as captain ahead of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations under then-coach Kwasi Appiah.
In an interview with Atinka FM, Gyan revealed that Kwasi Appiah was not the mastermind behind his dismissal as captain; rather, he was merely the messenger delivering the news.
While Gyan refrained from naming those responsible for his ousting, he hinted that it might have been a decision orchestrated by the Normalization Committee overseeing Ghana football at the time.
Despite the upheaval, Gyan maintained that he harbours no ill will towards Kwasi Appiah or those involved in the decision-making process. He even suggested that Appiah himself regrets having to deliver the news to him.
“The explanation wasn’t from the coach. I don’t want to go into details but it didn’t come from the coach. It was the period of Normalization Committee so I know it wasn’t coming from him. Kwasi Appiah will insist that it was his decision but I know it wasn’t his decision and he regrets doing it,” Gyan said.
Asamoah Gyan further shared insights into his conversation with Kwasi Appiah regarding the captaincy change.
Gyan revealed that Appiah faced difficulties persuading him about the responsibilities of the new role.
In response to Appiah’s challenges, Gyan stated that he proposed retiring from the team.
“I told him I did not understand the meaning of the role of ‘General Captain’. I asked what it was about and he outlined my duties which were to support him and support the players. I then reminded him that it is the same role as a captain so what did he want with the ‘general’ tag?
“I made the job simple for him by asking if I was being stripped of the captaincy or if I wasn’t part of his plans. His explanation wasn’t going well so I made it simple for him by offering to retire from the team.
I did not want my presence to create any form of tension in the camp so I offered to retire.
I had a change of mind after speaking to the president. After speaking to the president, I went there wholeheartedly with no negative mindset,” he said.
Barely a month beforethe 2019 AFCON, KwasiAppiah rocked his own boat by naming Andre Dede Ayew as the captain of the Black Stars, as a replacement for Asamoah Gyan, who was still in the team.
Asamoah Gyan, who was compensated with the General Captain position, felt disrespected and retired from the team, a decision the legendary striker rescinded upon the intervention of President Akufo-Addo.
Former Black Stars strikerAugustine Arhinful shared a remarkable tale of divine intervention that led to his healing from a debilitating injury that had sidelined him from playing any form of football, even casually, for three long years.
In an interview with Dan Kwaku Yeboah TV, Arhinful recounted the frustrating period towards the end of his career when a persistent injury forced him into premature retirement and deprived him of the simple joy of kicking a ball around for fitness.
Despite these challenges, Arhinful, known for his strong Christian faith, revealed how he experienced a miraculous turnaround during a church service. It was there that a fellow worshipper received a vision concerning him, leading to his unexpected healing.
“I was in church one Sunday when the minister had a vision that angels of the Lord were present among the congregation and healing someone who had a major leg problem. The woman wasn’t a pastor, she was just a worshipper. I felt what the woman was saying and prayed to God that I should be the beneficiary of the healing.
“After the worship, I stepped outside to buy water but right at the gate, the woman approached me. She told me that I was the one she saw in the vision and that she saw two angels shaking my legs. I asked what they were doing and she said the angels were healing me of my injury.
“I told her I had stopped playing football because of the injury and that for three years, I couldn’t even play Monday football. She asked if I believed in anointing oil and I responded in the affirmative. I bought one and she prayed over it.
“A month later, I decided to go and play Monday Stars and I went about my job normally. I was running normally and everyone was surprised. They asked what happened and I told them I had been healed,” he said.
In the same interview, the former Black Stars striker opened up on how he communicated news of his wife’s death to his children.
“When my wife died, there were people who asked me to take my children away from home but I didn’t do it. I gathered them in my bedroom one afternoon and told them that their mother didn’t survive a short illness. I told them I wanted them to comport themselves and not to cry.
“They just said thank you and that was it. They know their mom is no more but theyhave never complained,” he added.
The traditional drum, known as the ‘dondo,’ used by Black Stars players during their ‘jama’ sessions at the 2022 FIFA World Cup, has been added to the collections of the FIFA Museum.
According to FIFA’s announcement on Tuesday, April 16, 2024, the ‘dondo’ from Ghana is among various memorabilia from the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
The ‘dondo’ will be showcased at the FIFA Museum in Zurich, Switzerland, as part of the exhibition.
‘Jama’ is a customary ritual for the Black Stars during their training camps and tournaments.
The team often concludes their practice sessions with lively ‘jama’ sessions and also participates in morale-boosting ‘jama’ sessions before matches.
During the 2022 World Cup, Ghana competed in Group H, facing South Korea, Uruguay, and Portugal. Despite only securing one victory, the team demonstrated their spirited performances.
Former Black Stars captainAsamoah Gyan expressed his dissatisfaction with a crucial substitution made by coach Milovan Rajevac during the 2010 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final against Egypt, labelling it one of the most perplexing decisions of his career.
Egypt secured the winning goal in the 85th minute, and Gyan was substituted off in the 87th minute.
Gyan voiced his frustration during an interview on Onua TV, recalling the pivotal moment when he was replaced as Ghana faced Egypt in the final match.
He stated, “I was pained because I predicted I would score. But when [the Egyptians] scored and were celebrating, I saw No. 3 on the substitution board. It is one of the weirdest substitutions I have seen in my entire career.”
Ghana’s hopes were dashed as they fell short against Egypt in the final, losing 1-0 after Gyan’s substitution.
It was a major setback for Ghana, who had been striving to clinch their firstAFCON title since 1982.
Former Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan has refuted claims that Sulley Muntari physically assaulted Moses Amah ‘Parker’ during the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
Reports emerged suggesting that Muntari and Parker were engaged in a confrontation, leading to Muntari’s suspension and expulsion from the Black Stars camp in Brazil.
Addressing the matter, Gyan dismissed allegations that the former Inter Milan midfielder had struck the owner of Medeama SC.
“Sulley [Muntari] never slapped anybody,” Gyan stated in clarification on what happened between Muntari and Parker.
While Gyan refrained from delving into specifics about the incident, he stressed that Muntari did not physically assault Parker.
He added, “I was there; he never slapped anyone. I just don’t want to go into details because I was there.”
In 2022, Muntari apologised to Moses Armah Parker for the incident that happened at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
“I don’t disrespect elders so it will take a lot of things for me to react. Unfortunately, he was sitting in front of me and things got really bad.
“Immediately it happened, and I felt really bad. I wasn’t thinking just about him but also about his daughter, his family, his wife, and all those things.
“It’s not right for someone to disrespect their father. I’ve been looking for him to apologise to him for my behaviour but I have not seen him yet. I will use this opportunity to apologize to him,” Muntari said in his interview with Dan Kwaku Yeboah in 2022.
Former captain for Ghana Black Stars, Asamoah Gyan has provided clarification regarding events that transpired at the team’s camp during the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
Asamoah Gyan refuted claims suggesting that his teammate, Sulley Ali Muntari, had slapped a member of the Black Stars Management Committee, Moses Armah Parker, during the tournament.
Allegations had surfaced that a dispute over appearance fees for officials and players led to a physical altercation between the two, with Muntari opposing payments to officials.
Speaking on Onua TV’s Onua Maakye show on Monday, April 15, Asamoah Gyan, denied the reports of Muntari’s involvement in any such incident.
“Sulley [Muntari] never slapped anybody, I was there, I just don’t want to go into details but all I will say is that he never slapped anybody.” he added.
However, Muntari faced consequences for his behavior, as he was dismissed from the team’s camp for disciplinary reasons and subsequently excluded from the senior national men’s soccer team.
He remained absent from the team until his retirement from international football.
Since then, both Mr Muntari and Mr Parker have reconciled, as evidenced by a picture of them together at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
Legendary Ghanaian footballer Asamoah Gyan has made a firm commitment to address individuals who criticise him on social media with what he deems suitable responses.
Gyan asserts that he reserves the right to react appropriately to such criticism, viewing silence as a sign of weakness.
He emphasizes that his reputation and credibility, developed over the years, are not to be undermined by anyone, particularly on social media platforms.
“I should sit for somebody to come talk to me anyhow, cos it’s social media, right? I’m not a coward like some people,” he stated.
A social media user recently sparked Asamoah Gyan’s ire by disputing his assertion that the lack of experience was the Achilles’ heel for the Black Stars during their match against Brazil in the 2006 World Cup.
Gyan vehemently refuted any insinuations that Ghana was simply outclassed by the illustrious Brazilian squad.
Instead, he emphasised that it was the team’s inexperience that ultimately hindered their progress, resulting in their elimination before reaching the quarter-finals of the tournament held in Germany.
“Experience was the difference in that game, but I disagree if you say we were cooked, bro. Go back and watch the full game, bro,” he wrote in reply to a post by journalist Owuraku Ampofo suggesting Ghana got ‘cooked’ in the game.
Gyan’s explanation elicited a reply from a tweep who said, “My friend, my friend. Them cook we.”
An unhappyAsamoah Gyan denied any association with the tweep, stating, “Who is your friend? I blame social media. Eni wo n3.”
What happened in the game?
Ghana was no match for Brazil, who thumped the African giants 3-0. The Black Stars conceded the first goal just five minutes into the game. Asamoah Gyan was sent off in the 81st minute after picking up a second yellow card for diving.
The Black Stars had finished second in Group E with 6 points, beating the Czech Republic and USA while losing to group winners Italy.
Ronaldo, Adriano, and Ze Roberto scored goals for Brazil in the game played on June 27, 2006.
Ghana’s all-time top scorer Asamoah Gyan has said that John Paintsil deserves his role as an assistant coach of the Black Stars.
Gyan believes Paintsil has been working as a coach since his retirement, making him a worthy choice for the assistant coach role.
He stressed that the former West Ham United defender is a dedicated person who gave everything to the national team during his playing days.
“John (Paintsil) sacrificed a lot for the national team but people seem to forget.
After retirement, he went to coach in South Africa as an assistant and gathered relevant experience,” he said on Asempa FM.
“If you look at his life after retirement, all he’s done is to coach. So if I look at his records and what he has done, I can only support his appointment,” Gyan added.
John Paintsil took on a new path after hanging up his boots.
He began his coaching career at Kaizer Cheifs serving as an assistant coach before setting up and managing his own football Academy.

Black Stars coach Otto Addo has advised his players not to underestimate their next opponent, Uganda, following their recent loss to Nigeria.
Ghana suffered a 2-1 defeat against Nigeria, prompting Addo to stress the importance of their upcoming match against Uganda.
Recognising Uganda as a strong adversary, Addo emphasised the need for thorough preparation and strategic planning.
In a post-match interview with Ghana Football Communications, Addo pointed out Uganda’s strengths, highlighting their talented players and effective gameplay.
“Yeah, we have Uganda on Tuesday and the boys. I think they played well but if they think it will be an easy game, then they are wrong. Uganda is very, very good. I watched them a little bit before now; I have to go deeper,” he said.
“They have good players, we have to have a good plan if we want to win this game. I don’t see us as favourites; it will be an even game. We have to rest now, I have to think about how we play, and maybe we need some fresh legs.
“For me, the most important thing is to get options and to get solutions for the upcoming games so these friendly matches are very, very important for us to know how they play and how they can adapt and take it to theWorld Cup qualifiers in June,” he added.

These four, along with Frederick Asare from Asante Kotoko, have earned their debut call-ups due to their standout performances at their respective clubs.
The matches, set to take place in Marrakech, Morocco, mark the start of a new era under coach Otto Addo. Additionally, Brighton and Hove Albion’s Tariq Lamptey returns to the squad after recovering from an injury.
Defender for Fenerbahçe, Alexander Djiku, has withdrawn from the Black Stars squad for their upcoming friendlies against Nigeria and Uganda.
Reports indicate that he requested to be excused and thus did not join the team for the matches scheduled to take place in Morocco.
Djiku’s decision makes him the fifth player to opt out of the squad for various reasons, joining Thomas Partey, Joseph Paintsil, Mohammed Kudus, and Inaki Williams.
While the Ghana Football Association has not officially confirmed Djiku’s absence, 23 out of the 26 invited players are currently available for selection.
The friendly against Nigeria is scheduled for today, March 22, 2024, followed by a match against Uganda on Tuesday, March 26.
Both games will be held at the Stade deMarrakech in Morocco, with kickoff set for 16:00 GMT.
Ivorian midfielder, Mohamed Diomande, recently included in the Black Stars squad for friendly matches against Nigeria and Uganda, posted a cryptic message on social media regarding the Ghana Football Association’s efforts to secure his commitment to Ghana.
Taking to Instagram on Thursday, March 21, 2024, the Right to Dream Academy graduate expressed gratitude to God for his career progression, which has seen him play for Scottish club Rangers FC and attract interest from Ghana.
However, Diomande stopped short of confirming or rejecting the call-up, instead hinting that he had communicated his decision to Black Stars coach Otto Addo.
“I am really grateful to ALLAH for having achieved part of this dream; that of becoming a professional footballer, it remains the other part; that of joining the national team and also making my parents proud.
“In addition, I am equally aware of the interest in my host country Ghana, where I have spent more than 7 years of my life training as a footballer.
“However, a lot has been said, but I am in direct contact with the manager concerning my decision, and it is he who holds the real information about my choice,” he said.
Diomande, a native of Ivory Coast, is qualified to represent Ghana due to his extensive time spent in the country, including training at the Right to Dream Academy.
He was selected in Otto Addo’s 26-man squad for matches against Nigeria and Uganda scheduled for March 22 and March 26 respectively at Stade de Marrakech in Morocco.
However, Diomande is expected to accept acall-up from Ivory Coast, as he has been included in their latest Under-23 squad for an upcoming game against France.
Likewise, goalkeeper David Akologo is likely to withdraw from the squad as he is currently with the Bolivia camp.
This marks Lamptey’s return to the national team after his last appearance at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
Lamptey’s absence from the squad has been due to recurring injuries, which have sidelined him from international duty since the 3-2 win over South Korea during the World Cup.
His return is seen as a significant boost for the Black Stars, especially as they prepare for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers in June under new coach Otto Addo.
Although Lamptey missed out on the Africa Cup of Nations due to his injuries, his comeback is timely for the national team’s preparations.
Expected to feature in the upcoming matches against Nigeria and Uganda, Lamptey’s presence adds depth to the squad as they aim to bounce back from a disappointing AFCON campaign by securing victories against their rivals, Nigeria.
Ghanaian attacking midfielder Mohammed Kudus, who has been in impressive form for West Ham United in the English Premier League, has been ruled out of Ghana’s upcoming international friendly matches against Nigeria and Uganda.
The exclusion is due to a shoulder injury he sustained during a recent Premier League game against Aston Villa.
Kudus, 23, joins a list of players sidelined due to injuries, including Nathaniel Adjei, Thomas Partey, and Elisha Owusu.
Despite playing the full duration of the game, Kudus underwent a medical examination following the match, revealing discomfort in his shoulder that necessitated his absence from the friendlies.
Having scored 11 goals and provided three assists in 34 appearances for West Ham United this season, Kudus remains one of Ghana’s standout performers in European football.
He has represented the Ghana national team 32 times, scoring eleven goals since his debut in 2019.
The Black Stars, under the guidance of newly appointed head coach Otto Addo and his assistants Joseph Laumann and John Paintsil, will face Nigeria on March 22 and Uganda on March 26 at the Stade Grade Marrakech in Morocco.
Ghanaian national football team, the Black Stars, commenced their training sessions in Marrakesh, Morocco, ahead of two friendly matches against Nigeria and Uganda scheduled for March 22 and 26, 2024, respectively.
Led by newly appointed head coach Otto Addo and his coaching staff, the team conducted their initial training session with 16 players participating.
Notable players included Tariq Lamptey, Andre Ayew, and Jordan Ayew, among others.
As reported by Football Ghana, the squad size later increased to 23 players with additional arrivals.
A video shared by the Ghana Football Association showcased the players undergoing various training drills, overseen by the coaching staff.
Special attention was given to goalkeepers under the guidance of new goalkeeping coach Fatawu Dauda.
Training activities included ball juggling, rondos, and shooting drills to prepare the players for the upcoming matches.
These friendly games mark Otto Addo’s return to coaching the Black Stars after the team’s disappointing performance in the 2023 African Cup of Nations.
Following that tournament, former coach Chris Hughton and his entire coaching staff were replaced by Otto Addo, Joseph Laumann, John Paintsil, and Fatawu Dauda, aiming to revitalize the team’s performance.
The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has provided reasons for the absence of Thomas Partey, Inaki Williams, and Joseph Paintsil from the Black Stars squad for the upcoming friendlies.
Ghana will play against Nigeria and Uganda during the March international break, with matches scheduled for March 22 and March 26, respectively, in Morocco.
Otto Addo, who has returned for a second spell with the Black Stars, has named a 26-man squad for the friendlies, including four debutants: Frederick Asare, Nathaniel Adjei, Mohammed Diomande, and Ibrahim Osman.
However, Partey, Inaki, and Paintsil were not included in the squad, and the GFA has clarified their omission from the test games.
Partey, who plays for Arsenal, requested his exclusion from the squad to focus on regaining full fitness after recent injuries.
Inaki opted out of the games to rest and recover fully from recent injury setbacks.
John Paintsil, on the other hand, is having challenges with immigration documentation and hence cannot leave the United States of America.
“As a result of his move to the United States, there are some further immigration documentation procedures he must embark upon which is why he is unable to travel outside the United States until the process is completed,” the Black Stars wrote.

Otto Addo has settled on John Painstil, and Fatawu Dauda as his assistant coaches as he takes up the role of Black Stars head coach.
Lauman, a UEFA pro-license holder, who previously played in Cyprus, Germany, and Vietnam has had stints with Standard Liege, VfL Bochum, and Barnsley in the English championship.
Former Fulham player John Painstil played West Ham United, Kaizer Chiefs of South Africa, Berekum Arsenal and Liberty Professionals. He featured in two FIFA World Cup tournaments for Ghana before retiring.
Paintsil is a Ghanaian legend with 89 caps, a former captain, and a member of the squad that won bronze in the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations. He served as an assistant coach at Kaizer Chiefs and a CAF Licence B holder.
Fatawu Dauda, a former goalkeeper of Voradep, Okwahu United, AshantiGold and Orlando Pirates, represented Ghana 23 times and featured in the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
The Ghana Football Association has assured its readiness to provide the necessary support to the newly formed technical team to ensure their success.
The GFA has also called on Ghanaians to exercise patience and offer the team their full backing as the nation embarks on this rebuilding process.
Otto Addo who has recently been appointed head coach of the senior national team, Black Stars, has named a 26-man provisional squad for the friendlies in the upcoming international break.
There are five new players in the squad and among them is Asante Kotoko’s Frederick Asare. The other four are Bolivia-based David Akologo, who has also been invited to the Bolivia national team, Lorient’s Nathaniel Adjei, Mohammed Diomande of Rangers and Nordsjaelland’s Ibrahim Osman.
Tariq Lamptey is also making a return to the squad after his return from a long-term injury. He missed the AFCON in Cote d’Ivoire due to his injury. Leicester City winger Abdul Fatawu Issahaku has also made it to the provisional squad.
Ghana is set to face Nigeria on March and Uganda four days later.
German Bundesliga giants Borussia Dortmund have penned a heartfelt message to outgoing talent coach Otto Addo, who is leaving the club to become the head of the Black Stars.
In a social media message, Dortmund confirmed the imminent arrival of Otto Addo as Ghana’s coach, wishing him success in his new job.
Dortmund expressed belief that Otto Addo, who has worked on some of their finest talents, will bring his expertise to bear and succeed with Ghana.
“Borussia Dortmund talent coach Otto Addo will part ways in the summer as he embarks on his new role as coach for the Ghanaian national team.
“We wish him nothing but the best as he embraces this exciting new chapter in his career! Thank you for everything, Otto,” the statement reads.

Otto Addo’s return as the coach of the Black Stars was officially announced on Friday, March 15, 2024, through a press release issued by the Ghana Football Association.
According to the statement, Otto Addo has made a significant impression on the selection committee, securing a three-year contract to lead the Black Stars.
The announcement underscores Addo’s successful candidature and highlights the confidence placed in him to guide the national team forward.
GFA President Kurt Okraku is quoted in the statement to have said, “Otto was exceptional in the interview process and was rated highly by the search committee, hence the decision.”
“There were some brilliant individuals among the coaches who applied for the job, so the committee took the pain to interview a chunk of them to pick their thoughts on their intentions to transform the team within a short period of time due to our peculiar situation.
“The Committee was overly satisfied with Otto’s performance for which reason he was recommended to the Executive Council for approval,” President Simeon-Okraku added.
The Executive Council of the Ghana Football Association has approved the decision of the five-member Black Stars Head Coach search committee to appoint Otto Addo as the next coach of Ghana.
This decision was made following a long but decisive emergency meeting of the Executive Council on Thursday, March 14, 2024.
During the meeting, the Council reviewed the report of the search committee, which was led by Vice President Mark Addo, and further deliberated on the matter.
As a result, the Ghana Football Association has reached an agreement with Bundesliga giants Borussia Dortmund for Otto Addo to be released to take up the coaching position.
Otto Addo will be offered a 34-month contract with an option for a further 24 months.
“Otto was exceptional in the interview process and was rated highly by the search committee, hence the decision,” President Simeon-Okraku told ghanafa.org

“The Committee was overly satisfied with Otto’s performance for which reason he was recommended to the Executive Council for approval,” President Simeon-Okraku added.
Otto will be allowed by Borussia Dortmund to join Ghana for the March international window, after which he will travel back to the club to officially hand over and take up the job permanently in May this year.
In December 2022, Otto Addo revealed the reason behind his decision to leave his position as Coach of the Black Stars, saying the decision is not only in his hands.
“The decision is not only in my hands, before I even started working with the GFA, everybody knew I had a contract with Dortmund and to even come here was very difficult and the GFA put a lot of effort to get me released,” he said in a press briefing in Qatar on Saturday following Ghana’s exit from the World Cup.
“What you have to know is the position I have as a talent coach is very crucial to Dortmund. We produce a lot of big talents. It is a crucial and important position for the club’’.
“Normally they won’t have to let me go but because I want to help the country and the GFA went there and had good talks, they released me for six months,” he added.
Addo won four games during his time with the Black Stars, beating Madagascar and South Korea in competitive games with the other victories coming against Nicaragua and Switzerland in friendlies.
Ghana qualified for the World Cup at the expense of Nigeria on 1-1 aggregate following a goalless draw in Kumasi and 1-1 in Abuja on March 29, 2022.
The Black Stars lost to Brazil and Uruguay and grabbed a 1-1 draw against Central African Republic in the other games under Otto Addo.
Ghana crashed out of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 tournament after finishing bottom of Group H with three points.
The team suffered two defeats to Portugal (3-2) and Uruguay (2-0) and defeated South Korea 3-2 in the other Group match.
Ghana Football Association (GFA) is set to unveil Otto Addo as the new manager of the Black Stars on March 15, 2024, according to a report by Sport Obama TV on YouTube.
Addo, a German-based trainer, is said to have been offered a long-term contract to spearhead Ghana’s new football project.
Reports from Nhyira FM suggest that Addo emerged as the top choice among all candidates interviewed for the vacant position.
If appointed, he will succeed Chris Hughton, with whom he closely collaborated during his previous stint.
Hughton initially served as a technical advisor before assuming the head coach role after the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
BREAKING NEWS 📢
Otto Addo returns to Ghana as new Black Stars trainer.
The GFA is expected to announce Otto Addo as replacement of Chris Hughton as new coach latest March 15, 2024.
Addo’s inaugural task, should he assume the role, will be to lead the Black Stars in international friendlies against Uganda and Nigeria scheduled to take place in Morocco in March 2024.
Ghanaian winger Joseph Paintsil has quickly made an impact in Major League Soccer (MLS), earning a spot in the Team of the Week after just two games with the Los Angeles Galaxy.
Paintsil’s outstanding performance during Galaxy’s 3-1 victory over San Jose Earthquake in the Cali Clasico secured his place in the prestigious lineup.
He showcased his talent by scoring a goal and providing an assist, contributing significantly to Galaxy’s unbeaten start to the season after drawing 1-1 with Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami in the opener.
Galaxy’s head coach, Greg Vanney, praised Paintsil’s exceptional display and emphasised his quality following the derby win over San Jose.
Recently joining Galaxy from KRC Genk in the Belgian league, Paintsil was named Team of the Week on the left side, alongside Inter Miami’s Luis Suarez and Messi, who occupied the central and right positions, respectively.
Suarez and Messi, former FC Barcelona teammates, played pivotal roles in Inter Miami’s dominant 5-0 triumph over Orlando City. Both players scored twice, contributing significantly to their team’s emphatic victory.
Youth and Sports Minister, Mustapha Ussif, has called for a strategic approach in appointing the next Black Stars coach, suggesting that a minimum three-year contract be offered to foster team development.
Following the departure of Chris Hughton after the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) due to the team’s unsatisfactory performance, the senior national team is currently without a permanent head coach.
Hughton’s tenure began disappointingly in the tournament with a loss against Cape Verde and draws against Egypt and Mozambique.
To address the coaching vacancy, a five-member committee was formed to recommend a suitable candidate to the Executive Council of the Ghana Football Association (GFA). Although the committee has completed its report, the official announcement is pending.
In an interview, Minister Ussif emphasized the importance of stability in coaching appointments for team growth. He highlighted that short-term contracts hinder the team’s progress and advocated for long-term commitments.
“I have proposed that the next Black Stars coach must be awarded a three-year deal or more,” Minister Ussif stated during an interview with Asempa FM, highlighting the necessity for a change in approach to propel the team forward.
Multiple reports in the media indicate that Otto Addo is the frontrunner to be reappointed as the Black Stars coach.
Former Asante Kotoko coach, Isaac ‘Opeele’ Boateng, has urged the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to consider appointing Black Queens coach Nora Haptle as the next manager for the Black Stars.
Boateng emphasised the importance of being forward-thinking and suggested that Ghana could make history by appointing a female coach for their senior men’s team.
In a tweet, Opeele expressed his unwavering confidence in the Swiss trainer, stating that she would be an excellent choice for the Black Stars job.
“Sometimes, I wish Ghana could live in the future to be the first to appoint a woman as their senior national team coach. The first to gain independence in Southern Sahara can be the first to do this. Nora can coach the Black Stars, trust me. Unthinkable, right?” he wrote.
The Black Stars coaching position has remained vacant since Chris Hughton’s dismissal following the 2023 African Cup of Nations.
In a recent announcement, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) revealed that the Black Stars coach search committee has concluded its evaluation process and submitted its report.
Nora Hauptle has garnered praise from Ghanaians for her accomplishments with the Black Queens. Since assuming the role of Black Queens coach in January 2023, she has overseen significant achievements, notably guiding the team to qualify for the WAFCON for the first time since 2018.
Under her leadership, the team has demonstrated remarkable performance, winning 10 out of 13 games, with two draws and one loss.
The rejuvenated Black Queens have netted 37 goals while conceding just six.
However, Nora Hauptle’s project faced a setback when the Black Queens narrowly missed out on qualifying for the 2024 Olympic Games after a 4-3 aggregate loss to Zambia.

Ace sports presenter Bright Kankam Boadu dismisses rumours suggesting that the Ghana Football Association is preparing to pay $2 million to Borussia Dortmund for the release of Otto Addo to Ghana.
Boadu vehemently refutes these claims, asserting that such a financial arrangement lacks credibility.
During a panel discussion on his Pure FM sports show, Boadu adamantly rejected the allegations, going as far as threatening to organise a protest if they were proven to be true.
“There are rumours that Ghana will have to pay $2 million to Borussia Dortmund for Otto Addo. I’m not sure it’s $2 million. I don’t want to believe it. It is not true. Only a mad person will pay such an amount.
“Are we going to pay Dortmund $2 million and also pay Otto Addo for doing his work as Black Stars coach? Assuming we pay that $2 million and also pay Otto Addo $50,000, we would be spending $600,000 on him per year.
“In two years, it will be $1.2 million. If you add it to the $2 million, we would be spending $3.2 million on him for two years. $3.2 million can hire a coach of Mourinho’s calibre,” he said.
Following reports of Otto Addo’s interview for the Black Stars position, speculations have arisen regarding the Ghana Football Association’s potential payment to Dortmund for the release of their youth coach.
Otto Addo is reportedly the frontrunner to replace Chris Hughton, who was relieved of his duties following Ghana’s disappointing performance in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
During the tournament held in Ivory Coast, Hughton’s Black Stars managed two draws and suffered one defeat in the three Group B matches played.
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo expressed grave concern over the performance of theBlack Stars at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations during his State of the Nation(SONA) address on Tuesday, February 27, 2024.
He characterised it as a clear indication of the team’s current dire state and the urgent need for intervention.
President Akufo-Addo pointed out that the Black Stars have been on a steady decline since 2014, with the 2023 AFCON serving as a stark reminder of the depth of their decline.
He stressed the necessity for immediate action to reverse the downward trajectory that Ghanaian football has experienced over the past decade.
“It is fair to say that, since the sad events of Brazil in 2014, many Ghanaians have been left disappointed by some of the recent results of the Black Stars. Various attempts have been made to revive the fortunes of the national team and rebuild the enthusiasm of the people with varying degrees of success.
“The recent AFCON in Cote d’Ivoire was probably the nadir of the performance of the Black Stars, and has left the nation saddened. However, I am quite certain that the young men and the technical handlers would, themselves, have wanted to make our nation proud, and I believe that the captain, Andre Dede Ayew, meant every word when he rendered heartfelt apologies on behalf of his team-mates to all Ghanaians for the team’s early exit,” he said.
To address the continuous downward spiralling of Ghanaian football, President Akufo-Addo says his government will institute the Presidential Policy on Football.
This policy, according to the president, will see the government working with the Ghana Football Association to develop football at the grassroots level.
“Mr Speaker, I believe it is time for us to take a long-term, far-sighted approach to correct what has gone wrong. It is time to return to scouting, grooming and developing talent at the district grassroots level under a Presidential Policy on Football that I intend to unveil.
The school sports department of the Ministry of Education will work hand in hand with the Ministry of Youth and Sports, in collaboration and synergy with the Ghana Football Association (GFA), to build district, regional and national juvenile teams for both boys and girls,” he said.
The Black Stars endured a disappointing campaign in the 2023 AFCON, failing to secure a single victory in any of their three matches.
Ghana suffered defeats to Cape Verde and managed only draws against Egypt and Mozambique, accumulating a mere two points out of a possible nine.
In the aftermath of their premature exit from the tournament, the GFA took decisive action by dismissing coach Chris Hughton. They are currently in search of a suitable replacement to lead the team forward.
The Black Stars head coach search committee has completed its report and recommendations, which were presented to President Simeon-Okraku on Tuesday, February 27, 2024.
ow, the Executive Council will review these recommendations to determine the next steps in appointing the Black Stars coach.
Following the resolution of the coaching decision, the FA plans to collaborate with the Ministry of Youth and Sports and other key stakeholders for their support.
The Executive Council had previously tasked a five-member committee, chaired by Vice President Mark Addo, to find a new coach for the senior men’s national team after the departure of Chris Hughton.
The committee’s mandate included identifying suitable and competent coaches for consideration, even if they did not formally apply for the position.
Comprising Vice President Mark Addo, Banker Kojo Addae Mensah, Professor Joseph Kwame Mintah, Technical Director of the Ghana Football Association, Ghana Football legend Opoku Nti, and William Kartey, Chief Director of the Ministry of Youth and Sports, the five-man search committee worked diligently to fulfil their responsibilities.
German coach Winfried Schäfer has expressed his commitment to leading Ghana to qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup if appointed as the Black Stars coach by the Ghana Football Association (GFA).
Schäfer emphasised that the Black Stars have not performed up to their potential in recent tournaments, and he believes that with the opportunity to coach the team, he can instill the necessary improvements to build a competitive squad capable of securing qualification for the World Cup.
“The team hasn’t been that impressive in their recent tournaments, and I am very ready to help build a good team and also ensure the team qualifies for the next FIFA World Cup,” he told SportsWorldGhana.com.
Additionally, he showcased his familiarity with the Ghana Premier League, affirming his intention to closely observe and consider players from the league for national team call-ups if appointed as the coach of Ghana.
“I know the Ghana League has abundant top talents. A senior team coach needs to be in the country to monitor players and give call-ups to those performing well. I would spend much of my time in the country to help get qualified players in the league to be part of the Black Stars,” he added.
Winfried Schäfer has officially applied for the vacant Black Stars coaching position and is optimistic about securing the role.
With previous experience in African football during his tenure in Cameroon from 2001 to 2004, Schäfer brings valuable expertise to the table.
According to a statement released by theGhana Football Association (GFA) on Wednesday, February 28, 2024, the FA’s Black Stars coach search committee has compiled a list of reputable candidates for the position.
The GFA’s Executive Council is now tasked with deliberating on the list and subsequently announcing the new technical team for the Black Stars.
Ghanaian musician Peter Famiyeh Bozah, popularly known as Fameye, has criticised Ghanaians for subjecting Black Stars players to harsh criticism, which he views as unjustified abuse.
Drawing a parallel between the criticism faced by musicians and that endured by footballers, he argues that both groups are equally affected by insults, which ultimately lead to frustration.
“You frustrate the players and put them under pressure. That is what you do to musicians. You insult the players and their families because of football,” he said on the Lound Lounge show on YouTube.
According to him, the insults weaken both singers’ and footballers’ morale and thus urge Ghanaians to be more constructive in their criticisms.
“You are killing our spirit. Present it well. You can be right, but present yourself in a way that will make people feel that this person is talking out of passion. Present it in a way that won’t be insulting. We can solve it without destroying it,” he submitted.
Following their early elimination from the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast, the Black Stars encountered harsh criticism from Ghanaians.
Ghana Football Association Executive Council member Gifty Oware-Mensah has sparked controversy by offering a surprising justification for why the senior national football team, the Black Stars, receives preferential treatment over other national teams.
The senior women’s national team, the Black Queens, is currently facing challenges with outstanding bonuses from their qualification games for both the African Women’s Cup of Nations and the 2024 Olympic Games. Each player is reportedly owed $7,500, even after their bonuses were reduced by 50%.
Reports indicate that the players are considering boycotting the final Olympic qualifier against Zambia on February 23 if the bonuses are not paid.
This situation has arisen shortly after Sports Minister Mustapha Ussif confirmed that the Black Stars players had been paid their bonuses before the 2023 AFCON in Côte d’Ivoire, a competition where Ghana exited at the group stages for the second consecutive tournament.
In an exclusive interview with Joy Sports, Gifty Oware-Mensah, who also serves as the Chairperson for the Black Queens Management Committee, appeared to downplay the seriousness of the Black Queens’ bonus issue, drawing criticism and raising questions about fairness and equality in football administration.
“The Ghana Football Association sells brands and products. Our foremost product is the Black Stars, and this spans across the world, not just in Ghana,” she said.
“The male team is the one that dominates the love and affection from the country.
“I find it quite worrying when I see people try to compare their treatment vis a vis the women’s team.
“They say half a loaf is better than none, and the beauty of it is that the first reason anyone should have to wear the national jersey is because of patriotism,” she added.
The Sports Ministry has assured the Black Queens bonuses will be paid before their Olympic Games qualifier against Zambia.
Management Committee Chair of the team, Gifty Oware-Mensah has told @kweku_lawrence.
Former national team player for the Black Stars of Ghana, Asamoah Gyan has called upon fellow sports legends to join forces in rejuvenating the image of sports in the country.
Gyan emphasized the need for a concerted focus on empowering the youth in various sports sectors, including football, boxing, and athletics.
Expressing his views, Gyan stated, “I believe the time has come for Legends in sports to come together and use their influence, network, and resources in attracting investors into our country and make a meaningful impact on our youth in the sports fraternity, i.e., football, boxing, and other athletics.”
Highlighting the necessity for substantial investment in these sectors, Gyan believes that the collective efforts of sports legends can play a crucial role in not only attracting investors but also bringing Ghana back to its glory days in sports.
“I strongly believe that engaging our youth and grooming them through these avenues can get them to be more focused, make sports more fun and attractive, and eventually bring us together once again just as it used to be in the past. I have started this journey and I humbly invite all my colleagues to join in this cause in reclaiming our football days,” Gyan concluded.
Forson, known for her outspoken views, asserts that the challenges plaguing Ghana’s football scene are not isolated incidents but reflect a persistent issue.
In her commentary, Forson draws parallels between the longstanding economic challenges in the country and the issues surrounding football.
According to her, just as economic problems have endured, football-related concerns have been prevalent for years.
Delving into her own experience, Forson recounted a past stint as a professional football player, revealing that the promised bonuses by the GFA were never delivered.
She expressed her disappointment, asserting, “The sad thing about our football is that like everything in this country, the problems didn’t start today. I remember playing pro football once ( long long story don’t ask, those who know know) and never getting the bonuses they promised. The way e pain me till date.”
Forson’s remarks shed light on the deep-rooted issues within Ghanaian football, emphasising that the challenges faced by the current national team are not new but part of a historical pattern.
As debates over the GFA’s role and the performance of the Black Stars continue, Forson’s perspective adds a nuanced dimension to the ongoing discourse surrounding Ghanaian football.
Hundreds of Ghanaian football fans embarked on a demonstration to express their displeasure over the decline in the achievements of the national teams.
The protestors, who started their march at the Obra Spot, seeked reforms towards reviving the game, which is the passion of the nation.
A group of sports journalists are the organisers.
The “Save Ghana Football Demo”, as it is dubbed, was triggered by the poor performance of the senior national team, the Black Stars, at the just-ended 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
Some of the protestors carried placards with inscriptions: “Decline in our juvenile football- Sika Di Basabasa,” “Lack of Vision,” Our Domestic League has collapsed”, among others
There is heavy security accompanying demonstrators as they walk through the principal streets of Accra to present a proposal of football reforms to the Sports Authorities.
Speculation surrounding the next technical team for the Black Stars continues to circulate within the media sphere, with Otto Addo emerging as a prominent figure in discussions to succeed Chris Hughton.
On Tuesday, February 21, 2024, reports emerged indicating that former Chelsea star Michael Essien is being considered for the assistant coaching position.
According to the reports, Essien has expressed openness to the opportunity and has welcomed the Ghana Football Association’s approach to serving as deputy to Otto Addo.
There are indications that the Ghana Football Association intends to construct a Black Stars technical team largely comprised of former players from the Black Stars squads spanning 2005 to 2014.
Recent rumours have linked Asamoah Gyan and Adam Kwarasey to potential roles within the team. It’s reported that Gyan may take on the position of custodian trainer, while Kwarasey, a member of the 2014 World Cup team, is under consideration for the role previously held by the esteemed Richard Kingson.
Additionally, Asamoah Gyan is rumoured to be considered as a replacement for Ameenu Shadow, who served as team manager during the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
Laryea Kingston, who is currently serving as an assistant coach with the Black Starlets, is also reportedly being considered for one of the two assistant coach positions.
Denial by GFA Exco member:
A member of the Executive Council of theGhana Football Association, Frederick Acheampong, has expressed shock about the reports flying in the media space over the issue.
“The appointment of the coach does not even stop with the search committee. This is from our level (the Executive Committee). The decision we made was that the search committee should draw up a shortlist of three coaches, so I was surprised to hear that Otto Addo is leading the race as if the search committee is in charge of appointing a coach.
“The search committee is expected to bring three coaches to the Executive Council for further discussions and checks before one person will be chosen amongst the three,” he said in a Kessben FM interview monitored by Footballghana.com.
Majority Leader in Parliament, Osei Kyei Mensah-Bonsu, has issued a cautionary message to the Ghana Football Association (GFA) regarding its quest for a new coach for the Black Stars.
