Famous rapper Lyrical Joe, real name Joseph Gamor, emphasized the possibility of Ghanaian musicians having a worldwide influence in a recent interview with Cape Coast-based radio presenter Amansan Krakye.
He stressed that musicians could have extraordinary success abroad if the government gave music the same financial backing it gives football.
Lyrical Joe asserted, “Of course, we can win the Grammys and make more impact with that kind of resources, and it’s evident, not like anyone is lying or anything else.”
He expressed concern over the disproportionate government spending on football, attributing the disappointment felt by Ghanaians during the Black Stars‘ losses to the substantial investments made in football.
According to the rapper, the disparity in funding between football and music is a significant factor contributing to the emotional impact of football outcomes on the nation.
He revealed, “The amount that is spent by the government on football to sponsor all these things, the same amount is not spent by the government on music.”
Lyrical Joe highlighted the financial disparity, stating, “Maybe the musicians themselves spend that amount on their music, but the government doesn’t spend that colossal amount on us.”
He emphasized the need for increased governmental support for the music industry, underscoring the substantial impact it could have on the global recognition and success of Ghanaian artists.
Bernard Allotey Jacobs, a former NDC Central Regional Chairman, has called on the Ayew brothers to step down from representing the Black Stars.
Allotey Jacobs, discussing Ghana’s match against Mozambique that led to the Black Stars’ exit from the ongoing African Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Ivory Coast, expressed bewilderment over Ghana’s initial lead turning into a draw after Dede Ayew entered the game and facilitated Mozambique’s equaliser.
Dede Ayew conceded a penalty, converted by a Mozambican player, resulting in a 2-1 lead for the Black Stars.
However, Ghana’s goalkeeper, Richard Ofori, unintentionally conceded another goal by touching a ball that was on its way out, awarding Mozambique a goal-kick and levelling the score.
Commenting during Peace FM’s “Kokrokoo” discussion programme, Allotey Jacobs pleaded with soccer legend and father of the Ayews, Abedi Pele, to advise his sons.
“If I were Abedi Pele, I’d tell my children not to play the Black Stars again,” he said.
Allotey also cautioned Ghanaians against their incessant use of negative words onthe Black Stars, saying, “words are powerful. My advice to Ghanaians, in politics, in sports, and in religion: words are very, very powerful,” to wit, their choice of words could either make or break the Black Stars.
Former Ghanaian footballer Prince Tagoe has expressed concerns about the strained relationship between President Kurt Okraku and Wilfred Palmer, emphasising that it should not negatively impact Joseph Paintsil.
Tagoe believes that conflicts between the GFA President and certain football administrators are affecting players managed by those administrators.
Using Joseph Paintsil, under the guidance of Osei Kwaku Palmer, as an example, Tagoe points to Paintsil’s frustration, particularly during the Black Stars’ match against Mozambique, where he was substituted despite being a key player.
Tagoe suggests that Paintsil’s discomfort is a result of the ongoing issues between Palmer and Kurt Okraku.
“Those at the FA have decided to make some players feel uncomfortable at the national team just because they have problems with other management members who have players in the team,” he told Asempa FM, as monitored by FootballGhana.com.
“One example I can clearly make is Joseph Paintsil; which intelligent coach will take him off after he won the penalty? Kurt, if you have problems with Palmer, solve your issues and allow the player to play football.”
In their last Group B match, Ghana required avictory against Mozambique. However, they conceded two goals in injury time, leading to a 2-2 draw and their exit from the tournament.
A former Black Starsplayer George Alhassan, a member of the 1978-1982 AFCON-winning team, has revealed how some of his teammates cursed the national team after winning the 1982 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Libya. Alhassan recounted the team’s visit to JJ Rawlings’ house, expecting a gesture of appreciation but receiving only a salute.
“When we went there, he just said there is nothing he can do for us, only salute. So he gave us a salute and thanked us and then we left,” Alhassan revealed. Before boarding the bus, discontent brewed among players, expressing dissatisfaction with the former head of state’s lack of encouragement. Alhassan shared, “Most of them were saying Ye b3 wh3 kwan a omo be faso a omo b3 fa cup no biom (We will see how they will ever win another cup).”
Alarming as it may seem, the same players who uttered these words faced an unexpected turn of events during the next tournament in Cote d’Ivoire. Alhassan suggested, “We have already cursed ourselves before going to play, so how would you win the cup? You cannot.”
However, Veteran Sports Journalist Ken Bediako dismissed the notion of a curse, attributing it to an unfortunate coincidence. Bediako stated, “I am not that superstitious. I think we have grown past those spiritual things.”
Adding a different perspective, Mohammed Polo, another member of the 1978 AFCON–winning team, emphasized personal responsibility.
Polo asserted, “I don’t believe that somebody is hindering you from achieving your goal, because everybody has his time. But that doesn’t stop your achievement. You also have to go through your process that will help you. If you don’t help yourself… they are not helping themselves. Because It is the selfishness of monetary issues.. And you are making money. You are making money, why can’t you perform?”
This revelation raises questions about the impact of superstition and belief systems on the Black Stars’ subsequent performance, sparking debates on the influence of external factors on sporting success.
Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has issued a stern warning to the Ministry of Youth and Sports and the Black Stars following the team’s continued disappointing performance at the African Cup of Nations.
Once again, Ghana failed to progress from the group stages, this time falling short against Mozambique.
The Black Stars exited Group B with a mere 2 points, having lost to Cape Verde, drawn with Egypt, and ultimately failing to secure a victory against Mozambique. Two years ago, Ghana exited AFCON after losing to Comoros.
Expressing his discontent in a Facebook post on Wednesday, the frustrated North Tongu legislator highlighted the significant amount of money spent by the government to support the team, emphasizing the need for accountability for such a dismal performance.
Below is his message to the senior national team.
I hope Ghanaian footballers called to play for the Black Stars recognize that apart from the pride and high honour in representing our nation, taxpayers are making extraordinary sacrifices on the team despite the prevailing economic crisis.
The huge financial burden on struggling taxpayers must warrant some respect and utmost commitment from these players.
Documents submitted to Parliament by Ghana’s Youth and Sports Ministry a few weeks ago have shed light on a number of these Black Stars expenditure items:
1) 2024 AFCON Qualifier (Ghana V Angola — Home & Away) — GHS7,452,437.71
2) 2024 AFCON Qualifier (Ghana V Madagascar — Home & Away) — GHS8,395,434.13
3) 2024 AFCON Qualifier (Ghana V Central Africa Republic — Home & Away) — GHS3,414,894.51
4) April to June 2023 salaries of the coach & signing on fees — GHS3,379,548.10
5) The official ministerial documents also reveal that it cost taxpayers a significant GHS5,324,721.89 to airlift supporters of the Black Stars during the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
These 5 items alone amount to a colossal GHS27,967,036.34
Note that this GHS27.9million spent on Black Stars related activities during a period of historic economic crisis does not include latest tournament expenditure items in Côte d’Ivoire (I shall highlight that later).
For a country undergoing unprecedented financial haircuts which does not spare even the aged, and for a country unable to raise GHS4million to save lives at Korle-Bu’s renal unit — players of our senior national team and GFA officials must acknowledge that there are so many national problems we can solve with GHS27.9million and that we do not deserve this calamitous output.
Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has sounded a word of caution to the Ministry of Youth and Sports and the Black Stars over the latter’s continuous disappointing performance at the African Cup of Nations.
Ghana failed to advance from the group stages once again after failing to beat Mozambique this time around.
Ghana exited Group B with just 2 points after losing to Cape Verde, drawing with Egypt and subsequently Mozambique.
In a Facebook post on Wednesday, the peeved North Tongu legislator reminded the Black Stars team and the Sports Ministry how much was spent by the government for them to provide this appalling performance.
“I hope Ghanaian footballers called to play for the Black Stars recognize that apart from the pride and high honour in representing our nation, taxpayers are making extraordinary sacrifices on the team despite the prevailing economic crisis. The huge financial burden on struggling taxpayers must warrant some respect and utmost commitment from these players,” he wrote.

Following Ghana’s defeat to Cape Verde at the 2023Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), reports surfaced of an alleged attempt by a Black Stars supporter to assault the then-coach, Chris Hughton.
According to the information, the fan was reportedly apprehended by Ivorian police for trying to assault Chris Hughton at the team’s hotel after the 2-1 loss to Cape Verde on Sunday, January 14, 2023.
In the aftermath of Ghana’s disappointing performance in the international competition, two reputable journalists who were present in Ivory Coast for the tournament have shed more light on the incident.
Saddick Adams from Angel Broadcasting Network, reporting based on alleged information, claims that the individuals attempting to attack Chris Hughton are members of the security team of Kurt Okraku, the president of the Ghana Football Association.
Obama, as he is known, stated on Peace FM that if it weren’t for the swift intervention of some individuals present, the assailant would have physically confronted Chris Hughton.
“Kurt Okraku’s security, who is like a brother to me, is the one who did it. My biggest worry is that journalists were prevented from entering the Black Stars hotel. Ghana and Nigeria were in the same hotel but Nigeria opened its doors to us and allowed us to interact with and interview them.
“Our players were hoarded like bars of soap during coup time. It was that night that we heard that two members of Kurt Okraku’s security team were at the hotel’s lobby, hoping to attack Chris Hughton. But for the timely intervention of some person, he would have punched Kurt Okraku. They were arrested and handcuffed,” he said.
On Thursday, January 25, 2024, a day prior to Saddick Adams’ appearance on Peace FM, Collin Atta Poku identified the two individuals involved in the attack.
He asserted that one of the individuals was named Faisal, serving as the personal bodyguard for Kurt Okraku, and the other was Fatawu Mohammed, an assistant to Kurt Okraku and the owner of Avenor Stars, a football club in Accra.
Atta Poku alleges that these individuals are regularly seen in the company of Kurt Okraku and are consistent members of his team.
Late on Wednesday, January 24, 2023, several members of the senior national football team, the Black Stars, arrived in Accra from Ivory Coast after being eliminated from the ongoing African Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Online footage captured the arrival of notable players such as the Ayew brothers, Antoine Semenyo, and Gideon Mensah.
In the video shared by GhanaWeb, Andre Ayew graciously posed for photos with fans, while Jordan Ayew casually greeted onlookers, including his father, Abedi Pele, who was present at the airport to welcome his sons.
As of now, the Ghana Football Association has not released an official list detailing the number of players who returned home and those who departed for their respective bases from Ivory Coast.
One such player, forward Inaki Williams, flew back to Spain and notably contributed to his club’s victory over Barcelona in a cup match, scoring a goal after coming on as a substitute.

The Black Stars concluded the AFCON tournament with just two points, finishing behind group winners Cape Verde and second-placed Egypt, but ahead of Mozambique.
Criticism has been directed at specific players, as well as the leadership of the Ghana Football Association and the sports ministry.
Additionally, Coach Chris Hughton was dismissedby the FA on January 23, as it became evident that the team could not secure a spot in the knockout rounds as one of the best third-placed teams.
Argentina, the reigning World Cup champions, have purportedly agreed to engage in a friendly match against Ghana’s national team, the Black Stars.
According to reports emanating from Argentina, the match is scheduled to take place in China on a provisional date of March 26, 2024.
This friendly encounter is one of the two matches the World Champions have slated for the first international break of the year.
Prior to facing the Black Stars, Argentina is set to play against China. Notably, this marks the second meeting between Argentina and Ghana since their 2009 clash, which saw Argentina secure a 1-0 victory.
These matches serve as valuable preparation for the South American Champions as they gear up for the 2024 Copa America.
Currently holding both the Copa America and FIFA World Cup titles, Argentina is ranked as the top national team globally.
In contrast, Ghana holds the 61st position in the world rankings, reflecting their less-than-ideal performance in recent years, with no advancement beyond the group stage in their last three major tournaments.
The recent termination of Chris Hughton ashead coach of the Black Stars has sparked a flurry of speculations regarding the now-vacant position.
On January 23, 2024, the Ghana Football Association officially announced the dismissal of Chris Hughton following Ghana’s elimination from the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
With the Black Stars set to resume play in March, there is a sense of urgency for the FA to swiftly secure a replacement to guide the national team.
Several potential candidates have been mentioned in discussions; let’s take a look at five prominent individuals whose names are circulating for the coaching role.
Michael Essien
The ex-Black Stars midfielder and Chelsea icon’s name is prominently featured in discussions, with many expressing confidence in his potential to guide the national team to success.
Currently associated with a youth team at FC Nordsjaelland in Denmark, Essien’s wealth of experience is seen by many as a compelling qualification for the coaching role.
Supporters of this idea argue that assembling a technical team composed of former footballers under the leadership of Michael Essien could pave the way for success for Ghana.
Herve Ren
As is the tradition, there is persistent speculation connecting the French coach to the vacant Black Stars position.
Renard, widely praised for his successful stints with Zambia, Ivory Coast, and Saudi Arabia, is once again strongly associated with the Black Stars.
The primary obstacle to securing Renard has been his substantial salary demands. Nevertheless, many advocate for both the government and the Football Association to pursue his appointment, emphasising the belief that he is the ideal candidate to guide Ghana to success, regardless of the associated costs.
Tom Saintfiet
The name of the Belgian technician has shot up to the top of the list following his considerable success with the Gambian national team.
He also qualified them for the 2023 edition, where they exited the group stages. He resigned afterwards and is now available on the market.
George Boateng
Prior to the appointment of Chris Hughton, George Boateng was heavily tipped to be a successor to Otto Addo but could not get the job as Hughton was believed to be a government plant.
George Boateng’s name has come up again as a possible replacement for Hughton.
The former Aston Villa youth coach has been with the team since 2021, serving in a deputy capacity.
Kwasi Appiah
The name of the former Black Stars coach is mentioned again as someone the Ghana Football Association to turn to.
The Sudan national team coach is reportedly a name being considered due to his rich experience with the national team, having coached them twice.
Kwasi Appiah’s experience with talented identification and World Cup qualifiers also make him a suitable candidate.
Jose Mourinho
Jose Mourinho has turned 60
The Portuguese coach finds himself available once more following his recent departure from AS Roma.
Jose Mourinho has openly shown his affinity for Ghana, particularly after a visit with Michael Essien. Speculation suggests that a compelling offer from the Ghana Football Association and GFA could potentially attract him.
Mourinho’s illustrious track record, including multiple UEFA Champions League, Premier League, and La Liga triumphs, speaks for itself and adds considerable weight to his candidature.
Head of Sports at Pure FM, Bright Kankam Boadu, has provided a detailed breakdown of the potential financial benefits that Black Stars players, officials, and staff could have received if the team had advanced to the knockout phase of the ongoing 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Ivory Coast.
According to Kankam Boadu, a majority of the staff, deemed essential members of the team, would have been eligible for financial rewards had the Black Stars progressed to the round of sixteen.
Speaking on Pure FM, Kankam Boadu said, “If we had qualified, this useless team would have made $30,000 each as a player. Chris Hughton would have made $60,000.
“Team Doctor would have gotten $21,000 (70% of the players’ bonus). Ameenu Shadow would have gotten $21,000 and Ball Boy would have gotten $21,000.
Black Stars bowed out of the 2023 AFCON without securing a victory, managing two draws and suffering one defeat in Group B.
They began with a 2-1 loss to Cape Verde, followed by 2-2 draws against Egypt and Mozambique in their second and final group matches, respectively.
With only two points and a goal deficit, Ghana experienced back-to-back group-stage eliminationsfrom the AFCON, replicating their fate in the 2021 edition.
Following this disappointing performance in Ivory Coast, the Ghana Football Association has terminated Chris Hughton’s coaching tenure.
Ghana’s midfielder, Joseph Paintsil, issues a heartfelt apology to the nation after the Black Stars‘ disappointing exit from the Africa Cup of Nations at the group stage.
The team’s journey ended with a 2-2 draw against Mozambique on January 22, 2024.
Paintsil expressed gratitude for the fans’ support and acknowledged the team’s failure to meet expectations, emphasizing the valuable lessons learned from the challenging experience.
In a parallel development, Ghana takes decisive action following their AFCON elimination, as head coach Chris Hughton is immediately relieved of his duties, according to an official statement from the Ghana Football Association (GFA).
Ghanaians were left enraged, heartbroken, and also disappointed after the Black Stars’ draw with Mozambique on Monday, January 22, 2024, at the Alassane Ouattara Stadium in Ebimpé, Côte d’Ivoire.
Till the 90th minute, Ghana was leading by two goals until Mozambique converted a penalty after Ghana’s captain, Andre Ayew, handled the ball in the box.
Reactions on social media show that Ghanaians were left even more devastated after Mozambique scored their second goal in the 94th minute, when Reinildo Mandava headed in a cross from the left wing by da Conceição Nangy, securing a late equaliser and leaving Ghana on the brink of an exit.
Amid the disappointment and hurt, Black Stars’ winger, Joseph Paintsil, has taken to X, formerly Twitter, to offer an apology to Ghanaians for the teams inability “to meet the expectations of Ghanaians.”
In a tweet, he said, ” Sincere apologies to the good people of Ghana. We are truly sorry for not meeting your expectations.Important lessons to take away from this unforgettable experience. Thank you for coming through with your support in our low moments.”
Sincere apologies to the good people of Ghana. We are truly sorry for not meeting your expectations.Important lessons to take away from this unforgettable experience.💔
Ghanaian sports journalist Saddick Adams has set the record straight on the viral content circulating on social media, clarifying that the alleged bus vandalism was not the work of agitated Black Stars supporters but rather a result of the aftermath of the game between host nation Ivory Coast and Equatorial Guinea.
In a comprehensive statement shared on Twitter, Saddick Adams took a proactive stance to correct the narrative surrounding the incident, emphasizing that the images gaining traction on social media were linked to the passionate reactions of Ivory Coast fans following their match against Equatorial Guinea.
“But nobody was ready to harm anyone. Nobody vandalized any bus. The pictures of vandalized buses in circulation were done by Ivorian fans after their defeat to Eq Guinea,” Saddick Adams stated in a tweet.

The judgment against former Black Stars Captain Asamoah Gyan, accused of malicious prosecution, is set to be displayed at various locations, including Gyan’s residence, the Ghana Football Association office, and the Law Court complex.
On December 8, 2023, the High Court in Accra, presided over by Justice Ernest Owusu-Dapaa, ruled in favor of journalist Osafo Anthony, who had been prosecuted by Gyan, awarding damages exceeding GHc1 million.
Efforts to inform Gyan about the judgment faced challenges, prompting the plaintiff’s legal team to seek substituted service, which was granted on January 23, 2024.
Justice Owusu-Dapaa approved the posting of copies of the judgment at the High Court Complex, Gyan’s residence, and the Ghana Football Association notice board, with a 14-day display period.
In a related development, Gyan and his manager, deemed the judgment debtors, have expressed their intent to appeal the decision despite the court’s ruling.
The judgment, delivered on December 8, 2023, included damages of GHc900,000 and an additional GHc111,000 for 111 months of lost job income awarded to the plaintiff. Gyan and his manager now face a total liability of GHc1,071,000, which includes a GHc60,000 cost.
Background: In 2019, four individuals were acquitted of charges related to extorting money from Gyan to prevent the publication of a rape and sodomy story. Subsequently, the plaintiff, Osarfo Anthony, initiated a lawsuit against Gyan for malicious prosecution, leading to the recent court judgment.
Former Togolese international footballer Emmanuel Adebayor criticised the Ghanaian national team’s performance at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) , suggesting that the players lacked dedication and passion.
Following the team’s disappointing display in their final group match against Mozambique, which ended in a draw, Adebayor expressed his frustration with the team’s attitude.
“I’m not surprised by the outcome, but I’m certainly disappointed,” Adebayor stated. “They had control of their fate going into this game, knowing that a victory would secure their progression. But the way they played, it seemed like they were just here for entertainment purposes, without any real desire to succeed.”
Adebayor’s comments came after Ghana failed to win a single game in the group stage, earning only two points out of a possible nine. The team’s poor performance resulted in their elimination from the competition, mirroring their previous showings at the 2021 AFCON and the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
In response to the team’s underwhelming performance, the Ghana Football Association announced that Chris Hughton has been relieved of his duties as head coach, along with the dissolution of the technical team.
This decision follows Ghana’s failure to secure a victory in their final group game against Mozambique, resulting in a 2-2 draw and an early exit from the tournament.
Hughton, who took on the role of head coach in February 2023, achieved a win-loss-draw ratio of 30.77%, 30.77%, and 38.46% in all competitions during his nearly one-year tenure.
Under his leadership, the team scored 13 goals, averaging one goal per match, while conceding 16 times.
Assistant coaches George Boateng and Didi Dramani, along with goalkeepers’ coach Richard Kingston and other members of the technical team, are also departing from their positions.
The GFA has indicated that it will outline a roadmap for the future direction of the Black Stars in the coming days.
Ghana’s lacklustre performance at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations has generated criticism and raised concerns about the team’s competitiveness on the international stage.
The GFA’s decision to dissolve the technical team is seen as a strategic move to address these issues and restore the team’s credibility.
The Black Stars have faced challenges in recent years, falling short of replicating past successes. The early exit from the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations has prompted calls for change and a renewed focus on nurturing young talent.
The GFA is anticipated to name a new head coach and technical team in the near future, with speculation already circulating about potential candidates. Fans and stakeholders eagerly await the association’s roadmap for the Black Stars, hoping it signals a fresh start and a return to glory.
Popular Ghanaian actor, Kwadwo Nkansah Lilwin, has once again voiced his frustration with the Black Stars following their 2-2 draw against Mozambique.
Prior to the match, Lilwin had shared a video with a playful threat, urging the team to secure a victory.
Despite initially leading 2-0, the team’s failure to clinch the win has left Lilwin visibly upset.
In a new video, he laments the heartbreak caused by the unexpected draw, directing strong words towards the players, whom he describes as the architects of their own misfortune.
Lilwin’s sentiments echo the widespread disappointment felt by many Ghanaians, as social media becomes a platform for expressing discontent over the team’s performance in the last few hours.
Pained Lilwin labelled the BlackStars as “wizards” during his outburst on his social media platform.
Popular Kumawood actor, Kwadwo Nkansah popularly known as Lilwin, has unleashed a heated threat, vowing to physically confront any Black Stars player he encounters privately, expressing his willingness to face legal consequences for his actions.
In a video statement, Lilwin, visibly angered and distressed, passionately conveyed his frustration, stating that he is prepared to risk imprisonment in order to confront and retaliate against any member of the national football team.
Lilwin’s outburst comes in the aftermath of Ghana’s disappointing draw against Mozambique.
Prior to the match, the actor had already issued a warning to the players in a video, urging them to do everything in their power to secure a victory against the Whales of Mozambique.
However, the team fell short of his expectations, prompting Lilwin’s intense reaction.
Black Stars head coach Chris Hughton attributed his decision to bench Joseph Paintsil in the second half of the match against Mozambique to fatigue.
This decision followed Ghana’s late-game collapse, resulting in a 2-2 draw that significantly diminishes their chances at the 2023 AFCON in Cote d’Ivoire.
With the possibility of a second consecutive group stage elimination looming, Ghana’s point tally (2) and goal difference (-1) currently place them outside the top four third-placed teams vying for qualification to the round of 16.
In contention for the coveted spots are Zambia, Algeria, Namibia, Cameroon, and South Africa, with the final group stage games set to conclude on Wednesday, January 24.
Joseph Paintsil played a crucial role in Ghana’s first goal against Mozambique, winning a penalty kick that Jordan Ayew successfully converted.
His surprising substitution at halftime for Andre Dede Ayew in the second half led to speculation about a potential injury for the KRC Genk winger.
However, Hughton explained his reason for the substitution in his post-game press release, saying Paintsil “looked fatigued.”.
Nigerian gospel singer Tim Godfrey has shared his heartbreak over Ghana’s elimination from the 2023 African Cup of Nations (AFCON).
The Black Stars squandered a two-goal lead against Mozambique in their last group stage match, concluding their campaign with only two points in group B.
Expressing his sorrow on Instagram, Tim Godfrey addressed his Ghanaian fans, saying, “My Ghanaian family. What just happened? This one pain me sha.”
Social media was flooded with reactions to his post.
One Soulfully Thelma wrote, “We are shattered,” while
Kwaku Kwame suggested, “Hmm, we need Eha to cool our hearts.”
Comments like “The Ghanaians did no cedis coming” and “The keeper is definitely the weapon formed against our team cos e be the cobra” reflected the disappointment and frustration among fans.
However, amidst the sorrow, supporters like Joy At Heart and Lovely Dove emphasised faith and resilience, asserting, “E pain all of us but we have a very big God.”
In the aftermath of the Black Stars‘ unexpected draw in their recent game against Mozambique, emotions ran high as disgruntled journalists unleashed a barrage of insults directed at the players.
The Ghanaian national football team’s loss to Mozambique ignited a firestorm of criticism, with journalists expressing their frustration and disappointment in no uncertain terms.
Several journalists, known for their passionate coverage of football, did not hold back in expressing their disdain for the Black Stars’ performance. Harsh words and derogatory comments filled the air as the players passed by after the match.
I have never seen Ghanaian journalists this angry 😭😭😭 "Mohammed Kudus" Resign "Abedi Pele" "Stephen Appiah" Songo pic.twitter.com/ByZYAAUINq
The outcome of the match broke the hearts of many Ghanaians who had thrown their full support behind the team.
The initial optimism among fans was shattered as Mozambique managed to level the score by the end of the game, leaving both teams with two goals each. The draw proved to be a significant blow to Ghana’s hopes of progressing further in the competition, and it marked the end of their journey at the group stage.
The outcome of the match was particularly disheartening for many Ghanaians who had fervently supported the Black Stars throughout the tournament. The early lead, established through penalties, had fueled expectations of a successful campaign, only to be dashed by Mozambique’s comeback.
Ghana drew 2-2 with Mozambique in their last Group B game, which has left the team on the brink of exiting the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament at the group stage.
The Black Stars appeared to be cruising for the majority of the game, until the 91st minute, when substitute Andre Ayew conceded a penalty for the Mambas to pull one back, before they scored the equaliser four minutes later from a corner, which was conceded when Richard Ofori inexplicably touched the ball, which appeared to be heading out.
The result has left Ghana 3rd in Group B with only 2 points from their three games played so far, having lost 2-1 to Cape Verde in their first game and drawn 2-2 in their second against Egypt .
And the Black Stars are certainly down at the moment, but not completely out, at least not technically anyway, even if they harbour only the slimmest of chances to qualify.
Four 3rd place teams will qualify for the round of 16 at this competition, and with host nation Côte d’Ivoire finishing 3rd with 3 points and Namibia currently ranked 3rd in their group with 3 points, both teams are already ahead of the Black Stars in the pecking order of 4th place teams to qualify.
That leaves only two routes through which the Black Stars can qualify.
Those two places are currently contested by Algeria (2 points), Zambia (2 points), Ghana (2 points) and Cameroon (1 point). The other three teams all still have a game left, with Ghana having played all their games.
So in order for Ghana to qualify, Zambia must lose to Morocco, Algeria must also lose to Tanzania, and Cameroon must not beat The Gambia.
If that happens, Zambia will remain on 2 points, Algeria will also remain on 2 points, and Cameroon will also get up to 2 points with a draw.
So one of Algeria and Zambia must lose by at least a 2-goal margin to swing the GD in favour of the Black Stars, with all the others also losing, of course, before Ghana can sneak through.
Yes, I know the math is convoluted and confusing, and you have probably given up already.
But it is still my duty to inform you that the chance exists, even if it’s 0.0001 at this point.

Disciplinary Board of theConfederation of African Football (CAF) has levied a fine of $15,000 against the Ghana Football Association for incidents involving fans during the Africa Cup of Nations Match 4 between Ghana and Cape Verde on January 14, 2024.
According to the Safety and Security Official, there was a disturbance at halftime at stand N°18, involving two groups of Ghanaian supporters, with the use of tear gas during the altercation.
The Disciplinary Board reached this decision after a thorough examination of all facts, allegations, legal arguments, and evidence presented during the proceedings. The Ghana Football Association is required to settle the fine within 60 days from the date of the decision.
GFA, in a statement, called on the “supporter groups and all Ghanaians who are in Côte d’Ivoire to cheer the Black Stars to put up the best of behaviour within the laws of the game.”
“The Ghana Football Association will liaise with the Ministry of Youth and Sports, under whose authority the supporters travelled to the tournament, and the leadership of the supporters groups to avoid any future occurrence,” theGFA added in its statement.
As the AFCON 2023 progresses, members of the Ghana Black Stars squad are set to receive a substantial boost, with each player expected to pocket a $30,000 qualification bonus if they successfully advance to the next round of the tournament.
This significant incentive adds an extra layer of motivation for the players as they strive to make their mark in the competition.
In a collaborative effort between the Ghana Football Association and the Ministry of Sports, a unique system is in place for the national team’s compensation.
Rather than the conventional winning bonus structure, the team receives a qualification bonus, marking a distinctive approach to incentivizing performance in international competitions.
Under this innovative compensation system, the Ghana national team stands to receive a noteworthy $30,000 qualification bonus, even if they don’t secure victories in any of their three group stage matches.
The focus is on the team’s successful advancement to the next round, offering a distinct approach to incentivizing performance and progression in the tournament.
In a departure from the previous structure, where the winning bonus per group game stood at $10,000, the current system combines the potential bonuses for three victories in the group stage, resulting in a $30,000 qualification bonus.
This revised approach aims to align incentives with the team’s overall success and progression in the tournament.
So at the end of the group stage, if Ghana Black Stars qualifies to the knockout stage whether as 2nd in Group B or one of the lucky 3rd placed teams, the 27 man squad and their technical team will get $30,000 each as qualification bonus.
The Ghana Black Stars squad is set to receive a qualification bonus of $30,000 each if they progress to the next round of the AFCON 2023.
The Ghana Football Association, in collaboration with the Ministry of Sports, has adopted a system where the team earns a qualification bonus instead of the traditional winning bonus.
Under this new arrangement, even if the team doesn’t secure victory in any of their three group games but manages to qualify for the next round, each player will receive $30,000.
This marks a departure from the previous structure, where the winning bonus for each group game was $10,000. The combined potential bonus for winning all three group games now stands at $30,000, provided they qualify for the knockout stage.
In summary, upon qualifying for the next stage, whether as the 2nd team in Group B or one of the fortunate 3rd-placed teams, the 27-man squad and their technical team will receive a $30,000 qualification bonus each.
So if the Blackstars manage to qualify today, each player is getting $30,000? wow.
I’m tempted to say they should just come home wai.
On Saturday, fourAfrica Cup of Nations (AFCON) champions, Rev. Osei Kofi, James Kuuku Dadzie, Kofi Pare, and Willie Klutse, graced the Black Stars’ training ground in Bengerville to inspire and motivate the team ahead of their crucial final group B clash with Mozambique on Monday.
These football legends, present in Cote D’Ivoire to support the team in the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations in Cote D’Ivoire 2023, bring a wealth of experience and success to boost the current squad.
Rev. Osei Kofi, a revered figure for both Asante Kotoko and Ghana, was a joint top scorer in the 1965 Africa Cup of Nations tournament, guiding Ghana to its second triumph. He also secured the third-highest scoring title in the 1968 Africa Cup of Nations.
Kofi Pare, a participant in the 1964 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Japan, and a member of the 1965 Africa Cup of Nations-winning squad, boasts a remarkable achievement of scoring six goals in a single match, the highest ever recorded in Ghana.
James Kuuku Dadzie, esteemed as one of Ghana’s finest central defenders, played a pivotal role in the squad that clinched victory in both the 1978 and 1980 African Cup of Nations, contributing to Ghana’s historic three-time win in 1978.
Kuuku Dadzie has also served as the coach of the Black Queens, Mysterious Ebusua Dwarfs, and Tema Youth SC.
Willie Klutse, part of the Ghana squad that triumphed in the 1978 Africa Cup of Nations and scored against Nigeria in the finals, currently serves as the Technical Director of former Premier League side Inter Allies Football Club.
These football legends, present inAbidjan since the commencement of the tournament, have been actively supporting the team from the stands during the group games against Cape Verde and Egypt.
Ghana is set to face Mozambique at Stade Alassane Ouattara in Ebimpe on Monday, January 22, 2024.
Black Stars head coach, Chris Hughton, asserts that his players are well-informed about the necessary steps to achieve the desired outcome in their final group game at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Ghana is set to face Mozambique on Monday evening, aiming to secure their initial three points of the tournament after facing setbacks in their first two matches.
The Black Stars suffered a defeat in their opening game against Cape Verde and later relinquished their lead twice to settle for a draw against Egypt in the second fixture.
With just one point from the draw against the Pharaohs, Ghana enters the last round of fixtures, where a victory could significantly enhance their chances of advancing to the next stage of the competition
Addressing the press ahead of Monday’s game, Hughton said: “The players know what it will take to get a result. There are no easy games in this tournament
“We have to be physically and mentally prepared for this.”
A win for Ghana would give them four points and move them to second, depending on the results of the fixture between Egypt and Cape Verde.
Emmanuel Andrews Sammini, known by his stage name Samini, a Ghanaian reggae and dancehall recording artist from Wa, Ghana has touched down in Abidjan to lend his unwavering support to the Black Stars as they gear up for a make-or-break encounter against Mozambique in the 2024 AFCON qualifiers.
The Black Stars are set to face Mozambique in a pivotal match for the group stages on Monday, January 22, at 8:00 pm, and Samini is determined to uplift the team’s spirits, recognizing the importance of securing a victory to advance in the tournament.
Expressing his dedication to boosting the team’s morale, Samini emphasised, “It became difficult to just sit and watch at home, so I am here to boost them because we need the win, and it wouldn’t be good to do it alone like this. They need energy, and I am here to add my energy to help them keep their heads and focus intact.”
Despite acknowledging the challenges the team has faced in the tournament, Samini remains optimistic about their chances.
He confidently predicted a 2-0 scoreline in favour of the Black Stars, drawing inspiration from their past performances.
“We lost our first game, the second match was a draw, so this match must end in a win,”
Samini declared, instilling confidence in the team’s ability to secure a triumphant outcome.
Information circulating on social media suggests that Ghana Black Stars player, Daniel Amartey, has erased content that are related to the senior national team on his Instagram page.
This information was put out by renown blogger, Kalyjay, on X platform. The Independent Ghana cannot confirm this assertion as we do have in our possession evidence of Black Stars content that were formerly on his wall.
Currently, there are just three posts on Amartey’s Instagram page. Two show him training with a foreign team and the third of him in a relaxed setting.
Many social media users believe there is tension between the player and the senior national team. They believe that this so due to the lack of important roles given him.
Most often, he is benched or not included in the team’s starting XI.
Ghanaian rapper Medikal has humorously claimed responsibility for the Black Stars‘ underwhelming performance at the Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast.
The Pharaohs of Egypt held Ghana to a thrilling 2-2 draw on Thursday, January 18, 2024, in their second group match.
Despite a stellar performance by Mohammed Kudus, scoring a brace and putting the Black Stars in the lead, lapses in defence allowed Egypt to snatch a late point through Omar Marmoush and Mostafa Mohamed.
With just one point from two games, Ghana trails behind Cape Verde (with one game played) and Egypt in the Group B standings.
Another setback against underdogs Mozambique on Monday could see Ghana exiting the tournament at the group stage.
In a lighthearted social media post, Medikal jokingly suggested that his decision to pursue music over football might be the cause of Ghana’s struggles. “I’m sorry Ghanaians, all this is my fault, I should have stuck to football,” tweeted the rapper.
Black Stars coach, Chris Hughton, shed light on his decision to substitute Osman Bukari just 16 minutes after introducing him during Ghana’s intense 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON)clash against Egypt.
In the high-stakes encounter on Thursday night, Ghana surrendered a lead twice due to defensive errors, with one pivotal mistake arising from Bukari after he came on as a substitute for Inaki Williams in the 73rd minute. Williams had previously conceded possession with a poorly executed back pass, leading to Egypt’s equaliser.
While the swift decision to substitute Bukari may have raised eyebrows, Hughton defended the move, highlighting the impact of the mistake on the player’s performance.
“We like Osman Bukaria lot, and we have a lot of faith in him. I have to make decisions on the bench for what I see, and my feeling is there were a lot of emotions in the game,” stated Hughton.
“He is a very committed and honest player. At that moment, I thought the mistake affected him in the game. This is not normal, so to make this decision is because of what myself and the coaches see. This doesn’t take anything away from what we feel about him and the type of player and individual he is. But there are some tough decisions sometimes you have to make as a coach.”

Crystal Palace forward and Black Stars striker Jordan Ayew is urging Ghanaians to exercise patience and withhold criticism until the conclusion of the national team’s journey in the2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Ayew’s plea comes amidst heightened criticism following Ghana’s opening-game defeat to Cape Verde.
Speaking to the media ahead of the crucial second group game against Egypt, Ayew responded to critics and questioned the growing concerns after just one game.
The 32-year-old emphasised that the team has not been disqualified yet, challenging the rationale behind the criticism.
“Are we disqualified yet? We are not. When we are disqualified, then you can speak,” Ayew asserted during the press conference.

Ayew’s plea for measured criticism reflects the intense scrutiny the Black Stars have faced. The team aims to respond with a positive performance against Egypt.
After a disappointing loss to Cape Verde in their opening match on Sunday, Ghana aims to rebound against the seven-time champions.
Adebayor acknowledges the team’s technical proficiency but points out that there is a missing element related to how the players approach the game.
“Technically, they are good, but tactically, they were not in shape; they are not the best. Technicality and tactics are not important anymore when you are playing in the Africa Cup of Nations.
‘What is important in the AFCON is the envy and mentality,” Adebayor told Sienu TV.
“The mentality has to be right, the enthusiasm of the game; you have to go out there and know that you are representing a country.”
Presidential candidate for the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), Kofi Akpaloo, has made bold allegations, accusing the current Black Stars players participating in the ongoing2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) of conspiring to push out coach Chris Hughton.
Akpaloo’s claims follow the national team’s lacklustre performance in their opening match against Cape Verde, resulting in a 2-1 defeat.
Expressing his dissatisfaction with the team’s dedication and display, Akpaloo suggested that the overseas-based players in the squad are intentionally working to subvert and oust Coach Hughton from his position.
In a strongly-worded statement, Akpaloo expressed his desire for a complete overhaul of the Black Stars, advocating for the inclusion of more locally-based players.
“It is my wish that we sack all the current Black Stars players and allow the local ones to play. We have overpampered these players, and as a result, they are not committed. Their deliberate attempt to get the coach sacked or sabotage him will not work,” declared Akpaloo.
The accusations surface amidst heightened scrutiny and criticism of the players following their disappointing start to AFCON 2023.
The Black Stars are gearing up for their crucial upcoming match against Egypt on Thursday, with the aim of recovering from their initial setback. As criticism of the team continues to grow, especially after their defeat to Cape Verde, the upcoming match provides an opportunity for redemption.
The Ghana Supporters Union currently in Ivory Coast to support the senior national team at the 2023 AFCON tournament, has confirmed that its members received $400 each.
Abraham Nkansah, a member of the Union, clarified during a press conference held in Abidjan that it wasn’t due to threats to boycott their support for the Black Stars.
According to reports from Abidjan, the fans were left stranded following their arrival in Ivory Coast to support the Black Stars. They are said to have threatened to boycott the rest of the games.
Over 400 supporters were transported to the neighbouring country by the Sports Ministry, with the intention of backing the national team to success.
However, after the 2-1 defeat to Cape Verde on Sunday, fans have become frustrated by their living conditions in Abidjan.
A select side from the Sports Ministry is expected to arrive in Core d’Ivoire on Thursday to meet the fans of the Black Stars.
“I am particularly when I heard that the traditional team of supporters who will always travel with the team across the globe, the main supporters union, are also as we speak part of the people that are stranded. Well I deem it speculative for now but I will be there to get all the details,” said Wisdom Kobena Woyome, ranking member of the Ministry of Youth and Sports Parliamentary Select Committee, to Citi Sports.
Ghana will train later today for their game against Egypt on Thursday.

A former Editor of Kotoko Express, Jerome Otchere, has attributed the underwhelming performance of the senior national football team to fundamental flaws in its management.
During an appearance on JoyNews’ PM Express, Mr. Otchere placed the blame squarely on stakeholders, particularly the Sports Ministry, asserting that Ghana has not established a clear and comprehensive vision for the Black Stars.
He emphasized that the absence of a well-defined plan has been a significant factor contributing to the team’s recent struggles on the continental stage.
Mr. Otchere’s comments followed Ghana’s defeat in its first match of the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) against Cape Verde on Sunday.
He emphasized that the traditional approach of allocating funds only when the team qualifies for a tournament is insufficient.
“I do not think that as a country we have clearly identified what we want to do with our senior national team. All that we’ve been doing is when it’s time for a tournament and we’re lucky to qualify, money is made available for them to travel and that is all.
“There is no real plan as to what Ghana has been doing with the Black Stars,” he told host Evans Mensah on Monday.
Mr. Otchere contended that relying on a reactive strategy does not effectively address the root issues affecting the performance of the Black Stars. He called for a shift towards a more proactive and sustained effort from the authorities to address the challenges facing the national football team.
Additionally, he questioned the absence of a comprehensive plan for the Black Stars and urged stakeholders to prioritize the identification and pursuit of specific goals. Mr. Otchere emphasized the importance of having a well-defined roadmap to guide the development and success of the team on both the national and continental stages.
“Where [do] we want to take it [Black Stars] and if you’re talking about player quality, how are you nurturing players?” he stated.

It was earlier reported that a member of the Ghanaian supporters in Abidjan has been arrested for an attack on Ghana’s head coach, Chris Hughton at the team’s hotel.
This is said to have taken place after Cape Verde secured a dramatic victory over Ghana with a late goal by substitute Gary Rodrigues in the opening match of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has however denied allegations that Black Stars head coach Chris Hughton was physically assaulted by an upset fan after Ghana’s loss to Cape Verde in its opening AFCON game.
GFA clarified that the alleged incident was exaggerated and blown out of proportion.
“The fan only expressed his displeasure over the outcome of the result and told the coach or leave the job. There was no physical confrontation and certainly no arrest was made,” Citinews wrote.
The defeat leaves Ghana with a challenging task ahead, as they now look to bounce back against Egypt in their next match on January 18.

Ghana’s disappointing start in the AFCON yesterday appears to have ‘broken’ several Ghanaians, with many venting their displeasure and anger on social media.
Cape Verde secured a win against the Black Stars in injury time, ending the Black Stars’ 2-1 loss to Cape Verde.
Whereas some netizens, including Ghanaian dancehall artiste Shatta Wale, jabbed the players to change the name Black Stars to Black Soil, others, such as outspoken journalists Fentuo Tahiru Fentuo, fumed at Black Stars coach Chris Hughton for what he describes as “poor selection, substitutions and overall poor game management.”.
He said, “This is on Chris Hughton! Poor selection, poor substitutions and overall poor game management. He settled for a draw, a long way from full time, instead of looking for a win. We’ve fallen off so badly!” Fentuo said.
This is on Chris Hughton!
Poor selection, poor substitutions and overall poor game management.
He settled for a draw a long way from full time, instead of looking for a win.
However, the journalist expressed optimism over Ghana’s win in its clash with Egypt on Thursday, April 18, 2024.
During an interview earlier today, January 15, 2024, he mentioned that “Ghana shall not lose to Egypt and if the Black Stars indeed win against Egypt, he should be called “Abiba” and also be coerced to sing Rex Omar’s popular song “Abiba.”
Fentuo is one of the many celebrities who have expressed their discontent and agitation over the Black Stars ‘heart-breaking’ start in the AFCON.
In a video commentary, Shatta Wale argued that the team’s name, ‘Black Stars,’ should be substituted with ‘Black Soil,’ indicating his belief that the squad may not achieve significant success, contrary to their past performances in the tournament.
“How can a star be black? Name the team Black Soil so they can at least produce something because black soils are the best.”
You leave every Black Stars game feeling anxious and emotionally spent, much like you would from watching a gripping thriller
Here are some suggestions to help you get through the emotional rollercoaster for devoted sports fans who are determined to watch every Black Stars game but are looking for ways to deal with heartbreak following the game.
1. Keep your expectations low: Adopt a mindset that “he that is down fears no fall.” If you don’t have high expectations, you can enjoy the victories of the Black Stars more and lessen the blow of losses because you weren’t expecting too much in the first place.
2. Detach your emotions: In the world of football, expect the unexpected. Approach it with a mindset that acknowledges it as a game where wins and losses are inherent parts of the experience. Avoid excessive emotional investment.
3. Eat first: Ensure you eat before the match, as the outcome might affect your appetite. If the game goes well, you’ll have the energy to celebrate; if not, at least you won’t go to bed on an empty stomach.
4. Get a distraction after the match: Following a disappointing loss, engage in a positive distraction like watching a fun movie or listening to upbeat music.
To prevent going to bed disheartened after a disappointing match, consider diverting your focus. Football, as a joyful pursuit, fosters unity and harmony among a nation’s citizens. Victories by the national team unite people, setting aside differences for collective celebration.
Conversely, losses evoke a shared sense of disappointment. The following tips provide a practical approach to supporting the national team without succumbing to overwhelming emotions when expectations fall short.
An incident involving Aziz, an intelligent security staff member for the Black Stars, has sparked accusations of unprofessional behavior while carrying out his duties.
In a video posted on the X platform by @Oscarnuwati, Aziz is observed poking the head of an individual presumed to be a journalist. The dissatisfaction stemmed from the individual persistently recording despite explicit instructions not to do so.
“How many times I’ve stopped you. I say stop it. You want me to spoil your phone, or you walk out,” an angry Aziz said.
Per his statement, it indicates that the journalist has been warned several times against recording but pays no heed.
Reacting to the video, sports journalist, Saddick Adams, condemned Aziz’s actions, noting that there was no need for the display of aggression. He deemed the circumstance as not extreme to warrant such a response.
According to Saddick, such actions will only intensify the resentment the public has for the senior national team and other relevant stakeholders.
He wrote on X platform, “Someone has got to speak sense into this guy’s head that unless under extreme circumstances, the display of useless aggression around this team and especially in the full glare of cameras will only intensify the hatred and apathy for the team and everyone around it.”
“If he was an intelligent security enough, how did all the people gain access in the first place. The national team was formed by Ohene Djan and co. They have all left it,” he added.

“1: Reduce the time you spend on social media (you need focus);
“2: Reduce time you chat to wives or girlfriends (you need sleep);
“3: You guys are young, so I am not worried about you sneaking women to your rooms, but let me just caution you (it will drain you spiritually);
“4: Be united and because of that – no one should look down on the other;
“5: Play with passion and fight till your last breath;
