  • This is the real reason why Asamoah Gyan lost his captaincy position -Kwasi Appiah tells

This is the real reason why Asamoah Gyan lost his captaincy position -Kwasi Appiah tells

Ghanaian tactician James Kwasi Appiah has shed light on his decision to transfer the captaincy from Asamoah Gyan to Andre Ayew in 2019.

In an interview with Sienu TV, the former Black Stars coach explained that the change was prompted by Gyan’s diminishing physical strength, making it unlikely for him to start games during the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament.

Appiah’s decision to entrust the captain’s armband to Andre Ayew was a strategic move aimed at ensuring leadership on the field aligned with the team’s performance goals.

“I knew that his performance could not go to the level I wanted because modern football is not about name and his strength was not that high compared to years back.

“In actual fact, that was the main reason. Looking at the games he had played and personally, I don’t believe I will be the captain and I will be on the bench. The captain should be on the pitch to control things,” Coach Kwesi Appiah said.

The coach went on to reveal that, despite harbouring reservations about Asamoah Gyan’s fitness due to his limited game time in the months leading up to the AFCON, he held firm in his belief that the veteran still possessed valuable contributions.

This conviction led him to include the Ghanaian legend in the squad for the tournament, recognising Gyan’s experience and potential impact, even if not as the team’s captain.

“The reason why I took Gyan to the competition was because Gyan had helped the nation for a period of time and I said if you are not injured, no matter what, I will take you to the tournament and I want you to finish on that note,” Kwesi Appiah shared.

  • Otto Addo explains the essence of mindset for Black Stars ahead of AFCON

Otto Addo explains the essence of mindset for Black Stars ahead of AFCON

Former Black Stars coach Otto Addo
has provided valuable counsel to the Ghanaian national football team as they gear up for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Emphasising the need for a strategic approach, Addo urges the team to prioritise a step-by-step method rather than being fixated solely on clinching the trophy.

Ghana is slated to face formidable adversaries in Group B, including Egypt, Cape Verde, and Mozambique, during the AFCON tournament scheduled to take place in Ivory Coast from January 13 to February 11, 2023.

Speaking in anticipation of the competition, Otto Addo, who previously helmed the Black Stars during their 2022 World Cup campaign, underscores the importance of cultivating a gradual mindset. As the team navigates through the challenges ahead, Addo’s advice serves as a reminder to focus on the process rather than solely fixating on the end result.

“Step-by-step thinking is far better. If you are aiming too far away, it is difficult to fulfil them because you have to work daily. You have to train hard, you have to win each game, and the rest will come,” he told GTV.

When questioned about Ghana’s chances of breaking the 41-year wait for an AFCON trophy, the former Black Stars boss highlighted the importance of doing the groundwork first.

“It doesn’t make sense to always think about the cup or whatever; you have to do your homework first. There is some work you have to put in to survive the group stage and go to the next stage, and at the end, to win it, it is so much work,” he added.

Addo stressed the importance of instilling the right mentality within the entire Black Stars entourage as they enter the tournament. “Having the correct mindset is crucial in every moment. Even with the goal of winning, it’s essential to understand that sustaining that level requires continuous hard work. Therefore, my advice is for them to approach it game by game,” he emphasised.

Ghana’s quest for AFCON glory has been a prolonged one since their last triumph in Libya in 1982. The journey to end this title drought demands meticulous planning and precise execution, making Addo’s counsel on a focused, game-by-game approach all the more pertinent.

  • Kwasi Appiah speaks on Black Stars line-up for 2023 AFCON

Kwasi Appiah speaks on Black Stars line-up for 2023 AFCON

Former Ghana coach James Kwasi Appiah has expressed support for the Black Stars squad chosen for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

On January 1, 2023, current Ghana coach Chris Hughton unveiled the 27-man squad for the continental tournament, with a notable inclusion of only three local players: Abdul Fatawu Hamidu and Jonathan Sowah from Medeama, and Richmond Lamptey from Kotoko.

Star players such as Andre Ayew, Jordan Ayew, Inaki Williams, and Mohammed Kudus were also part of the squad.

Unfortunately, deputy captain Thomas Partey will miss AFCON due to an ongoing hamstring injury, emphasising a cautious approach to his recovery.

James Kwasi Appiah, now the head coach of the Sudan national team, expressed his satisfaction with the selected Black Stars squad in an interview with Sienu TV, as monitored by Footballghana.com.

“I think we’ve got a good squad. I’m in support of the players selected by the coach for the tournament but the only thing I am hoping for is the coach being bold to take decisions as to who should play or who should be on the bench and ones he is able to do that, looking at the list, I think they can compete at any level,” he said.

  • AFCON groupings: ‘We will struggle a bit” – Former Black Stars defender

AFCON groupings: ‘We will struggle a bit” – Former Black Stars defender

Former Ghanaian defender Frimpong Manso has voiced apprehensions regarding the Black Stars’ group-stage matchups in the upcoming 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

Grouped with Cape Verde, Egypt, and Mozambique in Group B, Manso anticipates challenges and foresees the team encountering difficulties in these contests.

In an interview with Kessben FM, Manso said, “I think we will struggle a bit in the group stage but I believe we will qualify for the next round. The next round is going to be very difficult. Because we are likely to face Ivory Coast or Nigeria, who are strong contenders in the competition.”

Manso believes that the team needs to focus on their performances in the group stage in order to advance to the knockout stages.

“Indeed, that’s where our competition will begin. I remember that in Angola 2010, we kept winning by a small margin, which took us to the final stage of the competition. It’s not going to be easy for us. But I believe we will struggle in the group stage but we will qualify.”

Manso’s apprehensions are reasonable, considering Ghana’s lacklustre showings in recent Africa Cup of Nations editions.

The team’s recent track record has been less than stellar, and facing formidable opponents like Cape Verde, Egypt, and Mozambique in the group stage adds to the challenge.

Nevertheless, with a well-devised strategy and judicious player selection, Ghana possesses the capability to surmount these obstacles and stage a commendable performance in the tournament.

Chris Hughton announces final lineup for 2023 AFCON

Black Stars head coach Chris Hughton is set to unveil Ghana’s squad for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

The coach is currently meeting with representatives of the Ghanaian media at the Alisa Hotel, where he will not only announce the squad but also provide insights into some of the decisions he has made.

Leading up to the squad announcement, speculations have circulated that both Baba Rahman and Fatawu Issahaku might be absent from the team.

Reports suggest that both players requested to be excused from the squad, citing their commitment to focus on their respective club activities.

Baba Rahman, currently in the recovery process from injury, has sought permission to concentrate on his club career, aiming to secure consistent playing time at the club level.

Additionally, reports from Saddick Adams of Angel Broadcasting Network indicate that Fatawu Issahaku has requested exclusion from the national team, expressing concerns that his participation could impact his efforts to establish himself at Leicester City in the Championship.

“Per his loan agreement at Leicester, there’s a clause that requires Fatawu Issahaku to meet a threshold of matches to secure a permanent stay with the English side.

“The AFCON will mean he misses a good number of games, the reason he’s opted out of the Ghana squad,” Saddick Adams tweeted.

Commenting on Issahaku’s chances of playing at the AFCON, the Leicester City coach said, “We are still waiting for the federations’ answer. We will see if we can have them available for the next game,” says Maresca.

Issahaku has made a significant impact with two goals and seven assists in 21 Championship appearances for Leicester this season.

The 2023 Africa Cup of Nations is scheduled to commence on January 12, 2023, and conclude on February 11, 2023.

Ghana has been placed in Group B alongside Egypt, Cape Verde, and Mozambique.

In compliance with FIFA regulations, players are to be released on New Year’s Day for travel to training camps beginning on January 2, ahead of the African Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Consequently, Mohammed Kudus will be unavailable for selection in West Ham United’s match against Brighton & Hove Albion on Monday, January 1.

Ghana reportedly contemplating Black Stars camping in South Africa before 2023 AFCON

The Sports Ministry and the Ghana Football Association (GFA) are reportedly reconsidering their decision to hold the national football team’s pre-Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) camp in South Africa.

The initial plan, confirmed by the GFA, faced public dissent, prompting a reevaluation of the training location and schedule.

Originally scheduled to open camp in Johannesburg on December 31, the team’s decision faced significant opposition from the Ghanaian public. In response to the concerns raised, there’s now a noticeable pivot in strategy.

The Sports Ministry, aligning with public sentiment, is reportedly advocating for a change in the camp location to Kumasi, signaling a shift in the team’s pre-tournament preparations.

Under the revised proposal, the team is expected to face Namibia in a pre-tournament friendly as part of their adjusted training regimen in Kumasi.

While the original plan had the team staying in camp for approximately ten days before departing for the Ivory Coast, this reshuffling of the preparatory phase introduces a new dynamic to the lead-up to the 2023 AFCON.

Meanwhile, head coach of the team, Chris Hughton, has announced a 55-man provisional squad for the tournament, including notable names from Asante Kotoko, Medeama SC, and international clubs such as West Ham United, Crystal Palace, and Athletic Bilbao.

However, Tariq Lamptey and Kamaldeen Sulemana have been ruled out of the tournament due to various degrees of injuries despite being named in the provisional squad.

The final 27-man squad is expected to be announced on January 3. Ghana has been placed in Group B and will face Cape Verde, Egypt, and Mozambique in the tournament scheduled to kick off from January 13 to February 11.

The Black Stars of Ghana will first play against Cape Verde on January 14, 2024, followed by matches against Egypt and Mozambique.

Ghana is placed in Group B of the 2023 AFCON, alongside Cape Verde, Egypt, and Mozambique. Lamptey shared his optimism for the team’s success during an interview with Sienu TV, expressing confidence in the Black Stars’ abilities in the upcoming tournament.

“Nothing has changed about the Black Stars that is why I want us to give Chris Hughton the benefit of the doubt that yes, with few weeks to the AFCON, things can change”

“Without a doubt, if you look at the players he’s being inviting for our games, you could see there is nothing wrong with it and that is what we also have”

“I’m sure with support, these boys should be able to do well for Ghana. Who can tell me Kudus is not a good player, Partey, and Jordan. So I’m sure with good support and good preparation, we will cause a surprise. I pray the team succeed in Ivory Coast.”

The Black Stars have a storied history of success in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), having won the title four times, with the most recent triumph in 1982. However, since then, they have faced setbacks in three finals, including losses to Ivory Coast in 1992 on penalties, Egypt in 2010, and a repeat defeat to Ivory Coast in 2015.

  • Let’s do our best to make this AFCON a success – Akufo-Addo tells Black Stars

Let’s do our best to make this AFCON a success – Akufo-Addo tells Black Stars

President Akufo-Addo has expressed his bewilderment over Ghana’s underperformance in recent tournaments despite the abundance of talent in the country.

In the past two major competitions, the Black Stars were unable to progress beyond the first round, exiting at the group stages of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations in January 2022 and the 2022 World Cup in December of the same year.

This disappointing run followed a round of 16 exit at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt.

During a meeting with the Executive Council of the Ghana Football Association, President Akufo-Addo emphasized the importance of providing the team with the best preparation for the upcoming 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, set to commence in 23 days in Ivory Coast.

“As an avid football fan, I am very much aware of the challenges that confront us, as results have not been good in recent games. But you can count on me for the necessary support,” stated the President. “We have some very good talents scattered across the globe, so I don’t understand why we shouldn’t perform in tournaments.”

President Akufo-Addo reminded the GFA President and his colleagues about the significance of football to Ghanaians, urging them to ensure the sport is on the right path.

With the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) approaching, he emphasized the responsibility of providing the technical team and players with the necessary support for success in neighboring Cote d’Ivoire.

“Ghanaians are obsessed with football, and you have the mandate of ensuring that our game is on the right path. We have the Africa Cup of Nations in a few days, and it is our responsibility to give the technical team and the playing body the needed support to succeed in neighbouring Cote d’Ivoire.

“It’s been forty-one years since Ghana won the Africa Cup of Nations. If my memory serves me right, we have played in a couple of finals in recent times and lost on penalties in 2015. Expectations are very high, so let’s do our best to make this tournament a success.”

President Akufo-Addo has expressed his bewilderment over Ghana’s consistent underperformance in football tournaments despite the abundance of talent in the country.

The Black Stars, Ghana’s national football team, faced early exits in the last two major competitions they participated in—being eliminated at the group stages of both the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations in January 2022 and the 2022 World Cup in December of the same year.

This disappointing streak follows a round of 16 exit at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt, where they were defeated in a penalty shootout against Tunisia. President Akufo-Addo conveyed his concerns and sought answers during a meeting with the Executive Council of the Ghana Football Association on Wednesday.

“As an avid football fan, I am very much aware of the challenges that confront us, as results have not been good in recent games. But you can count on me for the necessary support,” the President said.

“We have some very good talents scattered across the globe, so I don’t understand why we shouldn’t perform in tournaments.”

Emphasizing the need for a turnaround, President Akufo-Addo urged the association to ensure the Black Stars receive the best possible preparation ahead of the upcoming 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, scheduled to commence in Ivory Coast in just 23 days.

Additionally, President Akufo-Addo took the opportunity to remind the President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) and its affiliated bodies of the profound significance that football holds for the people of Ghana. The President emphasized the deep connection and passion that Ghanaians have for the sport, underscoring the importance of understanding and acknowledging the collective sentiment towards football in the country.

“Ghanaians are obsessed with football, and you have the mandate of ensuring that our game is on the right path. We have the Africa Cup of Nations in a few days, and it is our responsibility to give the technical team and the playing body the needed support to succeed in neighbouring Cote d’Ivoire.

We are looking forward for a better performance – GFA President tells Black Stars

Ghana Football Association (GFA) President, Kurt Okraku, has expressed hope that the Black Stars will deliver a better performance at the upcoming 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

In the last edition of the tournament hosted in Cameroon, Ghana exited the group phase with just one point, recording a draw against Gabon and suffering defeats against Morocco and Comoros.

With less than a month before the start of the 34th edition of AFCON in Ivory Coast, Okraku is optimistic that the team will improve and deliver a more commendable performance.

“Indeed, at the last outing, it did not go well. Everybody in Ghana saw what happened but we are looking forward to a much better outing at the AFCON in Ivory Coast.

“Fortunately for us, it is happening at our next door and I will call on all Ghanaians to remain supportive of the Black Stars because that is our national team we have.

“Even if the boys are not playing scintillating football, we have to throw weight behind them because that is our national team,” he added.

Ghana, whose last AFCON victory was in 1982 in Libya, has been placed in Group B for the upcoming tournament alongside Egypt, Cape Verde, and Mozambique. The 34th edition of AFCON is scheduled to take place from Saturday, January 13, through to February 11, 2024.

Ghana Football Association (GFA) President, Kurt Okraku, has encouraged the general public to continue throwing their support to the Black Stars despite the issue of delivery.

According to him, the Black Stars is the country’s senior national team; hence, all the needed assistance must be provided to it.

“Even if the boys are not playing scintillating football, we have to throw weight behind them because that is our national team,” he said.

If we need to sack Houghton to win 2023 AFCON, so be it – Annoh Dompreh

Majority Chief Whip in Parliament, Frank Annoh Dompreh, has suggested that Black Stars head coach Chris Hughton should be fired if necessary for Ghana to secure victory in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

Hughton, the former Brighton manager, has faced criticism since taking over in March, with the team’s performance and results falling short of expectations.

Speaking in parliament, the Nsawam-Adoagyiri MP urged the Sports Minister to take all necessary measures to prevent the Black Stars from bringing shame to the country during the upcoming tournament in Cote d’Ivoire.

“Minister, you’ll agree with me that these days our Black Stars is becoming a pale shadow of itself,” Dompreh said.

“As we are heading towards another African tournament, we urge you to do everything and anything, including the changing of our national coach, if need be.

“We can’t just go there and be part of the number of teams. We’ve always said that we are four-time champions; this thing is becoming old-time glory.

“We want to do something for ourselves, and minister, I know you can do it. Please help, and let’s get our Black Stars in good shape.”

Black Stars head coach Chris Hughton has unveiled a 55-man provisional squad for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) released the list on December 20, just 24 days before the tournament kicks off.

The squad features 11 Ghana Premier League players, with Medeama SC contributing the most players (5).

Other players come from Great Olympics, Dreams FC, Asante Kotoko, and Nations FC. Notable inclusions are Thomas Partey, Tariq Lamptey, and Kamaldeen Sulemana, despite ongoing injury concerns.

Yaw Yeboah, fresh from winning the 2023 MLS Cup with Columbus Crew, earns his first call-up under Hughton, along with Brandon Thomas-Asante.

2023 AFCON: Chris Hughton sends provisional list of 50 players to GFA – Report

Black Stars coach Chris Hughton has reportedly submitted a provisional 50-man squad list to the Ghana Football Association for the upcoming 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

According to reports from Angel TV, Hughton’s submission aligns with tournament rules, which require countries to present their provisional lists by December 14.

While the provisional list includes 50 players, the final and official 23-man squad for the AFCON must be announced by January 3, 2024.

In anticipation of the squad announcement, certain names have gained widespread attention in the media, with the call for the inclusion of specific players intensifying.

After an impressive performance in the Super Clash on Sunday, December 10, 2023, Asante Kotoko midfielder Richmond Lamptey has been highlighted as a player deserving a place in the squad.

Former Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko midfielder Charles Taylor has voiced his support for the inclusion of Richmond Lamptey and Hearts’ Salifu Ibrahim, emphasising their demonstrated quality.

Taylor believes that these two players should be added to the Ghana squad for the AFCON based on their impressive performances.

“If we don’t see these two [Salifu and Lamptey] in the Black Stars squad, then we need to question Chris Hughton. The two players have shown talent and quality and deserve a place on our national team, he said.

The Black Stars, a four-time African champion, are poised to encounter strong competition in Group B during the upcoming 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, hosted in Cote d’Ivoire.

“In a formidable draw, the West African powerhouse will face off against Egypt, with an impressive seven-time championship record, along with Cape Verde and Mozambique.

The eagerly awaited tournament is slated to commence on January 13, 2024, with the final match scheduled for February 11, 2024. The challenging group stage promises intense clashes as these football powerhouses vie for supremacy in one of Africa’s premier football competitions.

Ex-Black Stars coach Avram Grant ranks as lowest paid in Africa

Former Black Stars coach Avram Grant, an accomplished coach with an extensive career, emerges at the lower end of the financial spectrum as the least-paid coach among the 24 clubs vying for continental success in Ivory Coast.

As reported by Senenews, the Israeli coach receives a monthly salary of 25,000 Euros, a remuneration that, despite reflecting his wealth of experience, positions him at the bottom of the payment hierarchy for the upcoming tournament.

Grant, previously at the helm of Ghana’s national team, is now tasked with leading a team in a different capacity, not only facing challenges on the field but also navigating the financial intricacies inherent in coaching at the highest level.

In stark contrast, Algeria’s Djamel Belmadi holds the pinnacle as the highest-paid manager on the continent, commanding a substantial salary of 209,000 Euros per month.

The disparity in earnings becomes evident as coaches like Chris Hughton of Ghana and Senegal’s Aliou Cisse find themselves tied for eighth place, earning a monthly salary of 46,000 Euros.

These varied figures add an intriguing layer to the narrative of the upcoming tournament, illustrating not only differences in coaching expertise but also the distinct financial landscapes each tactician must navigate.

CK Akonnor not ready to force his son to choose Ghana Black Stars over Germany

Former Black Stars coach Charles Kwablan Akonnor has shared that he will allow his son, Charles Kwablan Hermann, to take his time in deciding which country to represent at the senior level.

Akonnor believes it would be premature to bring his son, who is currently playing abroad, into the national team at a juvenile level when there are local talents available.

Acknowledging his son’s contribution to Germany’s success in the FIFA Under-17 World Cup, Akonnor expressed a desire for his son to mature before making any decisions about his international football allegiance.

“At their age, we are not keen on these under-17 commitments, and who will pay for a ticket for somebody to come to Africa to play under-17? Another thing too is that maybe they should look at the talent in Ghana and use it,” Akonnor remarked.

While acknowledging that, at the senior level, he would wholeheartedly support his 17-year-old son’s decision to represent the country.

Injured Tariq Lamptey might miss 2023 AFCON

    Black Stars defender Tariq Lamptey
is facing the likelihood of missing the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations after sustaining an injury during his return over the weekend.

Brighton and Hove Albion manager Roberto de Zerbi confirmed on Wednesday that the 23-year-old will be sidelined for an extended period.

Lamptey suffered the injury during Brighton’s match against Nottingham Forest, prompting his substitution halfway through the first 45 minutes.

During his press conference ahead of their Europa League match against AEK Athens on Thursday, De Zerbi mentioned that both Lamptey and Ansu Fati will be absent for an extended period.

“We have lost Ansu for a long time. Same for Lamptey; they will be out for a long time.”

After just 35 minutes into the game, the defender had to be substituted due to discomfort. Lamptey’s participation in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations is now in jeopardy, considering he already missed the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Madagascar and Comoros due to injury.

Additionally, he was absent from the team during the October international break.

The persistent nature of his injury problem represents a significant setback for both the Black Stars and Brighton and Hove Albion as the season progresses.

Black Stars woes is God’s punishment on Kurt Okraku the ‘cheat’ – Alhaji Grusah

Former Black Stars management committee member Alhaji Grusah asserts that the current poor form of the Black Stars is a consequence of the alleged greediness of Ghana Football Association President Kurt Okraku.

According to Grusah, Okraku has isolated individuals in the football community and has chosen to rely solely on his close associates to manage the association.

Grusah alleges that Kurt terminated the services of the previous Black Stars management committee members without providing them with official dismissal letters.

“They said they had dissolved the national team, and they didn’t give us letters because (sic) they appointed us,” he said in an audio aired on Sompa FM.

While venting his grievances, the King Faisal bankroller said God is serving his punishment on Kurt in the most embarrassing way.

“He claimed he could do it all by himself; it’s God who is punishing him. Where you least expect to be embarrassed that where you get embarrassed for cheating on people. We are supposed to be one family in football but you want to do it alone along with your family…,” he added.

Regarding Ghana’s 1-0 loss to Comoros, Grusah said the loss means the Black Stars will face an uphill task at the soon-to-start 2023 AFCON.

“The youth are hoping the Black Stars will qualify for the World Cup so they can travel and start a new life. We thank God we won 1-0 we won (against Madagascar) in Kumasi. But for the Black Stars to fail to score in 90 minutes after conceding (against Comoros), it means we will have a problem in Ivory Coast.”

The Black Stars suffered their second defeat in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Comoros on Tuesday, November 21, 2023, marking three losses in their last four games.

Throughout this period, the team managed one victory, securing a 1-0 win against Madagascar in Kumasi during their World Cup qualifier opener.

Daniel Amartey, Kudus to miss Ghana’s game vs Comoros over fitness concerns

In Ghana’s second 2026 World Cup qualifier against the Comoros, coach Chris Hughton faces the challenge of navigating the match without two key players who have been sidelined due to injuries.

Mohammed Kudus and Daniel Amartey are notable absentees from the crucial Group I game scheduled for Tuesday, November 21, 2023.

Defender Daniel Amartey, having undergone a late fitness test, was deemed unfit for the match, as revealed in a statement released by the Ghana Football Association on Monday morning.

Amartey sustained an injury just over an hour into the game against Madagascar at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium on Friday and was subsequently replaced by Kasim Adams.

Adding to the setback, reports indicate that Mohammed Kudus is also set to miss the game after suffering an injury during the Black Stars’ training session on Monday leading up to the match.

The absence of the West Ham United midfielder poses a significant loss for the team, particularly as they aim to secure consecutive wins in the qualifiers.

Despite these setbacks, the team is gearing up for the challenge, with the game scheduled to kick off at 4p.m. at the Stade de Moroni.

Black Stars face Comoros for World Cup qualifier today

Ghana is set to face Comoros in a crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier on Tuesday at 4pm. Both teams currently share three points each after securing victories in the opening round of matches in Group I.

Ghana secured a narrow 1-0 win over Madagascar with a late goal from Inaki Williams, while Comoros capitalized on home advantage to beat Central African Republic 4-2 in Moroni.

The Islanders have a recent memorable victory against Ghana, having defeated them 3-2 in the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations, which led to Ghana’s exit from the tournament.

Ghana’s coach, Chris Hughton, remains unbeaten in competitive games since taking over from Otto Addo. He boasts three home wins but is yet to secure a victory on the road, having drawn against Angola and Madagascar in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers. Hughton faces the challenge of adjusting his backline due to the injury to Daniel Amartey. However, he has several available options for selection.

The Ghanaian squad includes players such as Baba Idrissu, Samed Salis, Majeed Ashimeru, Abdul Fatawu Issahaku, Andre Ayew, Jordan Ayew, and Mohammed Kudus. Inaki Williams, who scored his first international goal against Madagascar, is eager to contribute to the team’s success.

Comoros, coached by Stefano Cusin, has shown promise with three games without defeat, including a draw with Zambia and victories over Cape Verde and Central African Republic in the World Cup qualifiers.

The match is scheduled to take place at the Omnisports Sports Stadium in Moroni on Tuesday, November 21, 2023.

Its just a matter of feeding him 60% of the balls, he will deliver– Asamoah Gyan on Inaki Williams

Former Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan has shared his perspective on Ghana’s 1-0 triumph over Madagascar in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

Gyan suggested the importance of incorporating Athletic Bilbao striker Inaki Williams into the team’s offensive strategy. Williams’ decisive goal secured a three-point victory for Ghana during the match held at the Kumasi Baba Yara Stadium on Friday, November 17, 2023.

In a post-match statement on Twitter, Gyan conveyed his belief that providing Inaki Williams with 60% of the balls in the offensive play would enhance his performance.

“Just feed him with 60% of the balls in attack, and he will be ready mentally to deliver. PERIOD,” Gyan asserted in his Twitter post.

Inaki Williams had a goal disallowed for offside earlier in the game but remained persistent in his efforts.

In the dying moments of added time, Williams seized an opportunity from a Gideon Mensah cross, skillfully evading his marker to head the ball into the net, securing his inaugural goal for the Black Stars.

This marks his return to the starting lineup since September 2021.

In defense, Daniel Amartey partners with Nicholas Opoku, while Gideon Mensah and Alidu operate as fullbacks. The attacking trio consists of Jordan Ayew, Antoine Semenyo, and Inaki Williams, with Mohammed Kudus supporting from behind.

In the midfield, Baba Idrissu and Abdul Samed Salis will play a crucial role. The much-anticipated FIFA World Cup 2026 qualifier is scheduled to take place at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium at 4 pm.

Black Stars face Madagascar today to begin 2026 World Cup qualifiers

Ghana will start the qualifying series for the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Friday, November 17, against Madagascar at the Baba Yara Stadium at 4pm.

This game is crucial for coach Chris Hughton to overcome a challenging month that has raised questions about his future.

This comes a month after disappointing performances against Mexico and the United States, but the Black Stars now have an opportunity to regain the support of Ghanaians.

This match marks the third meeting in the past year between Ghana and Madagascar, following their encounters in the qualifiers for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

Ghana won the first game 3-0, with goals from Mohammed Kudus, Felix Afena-Gyan, and Osman Bukari. However, the return fixture in Madagascar ended in a goalless draw, and Ghana later secured qualification to the AFCON in Ivory Coast by topping the group.

Given the surprises in the second day of the African qualifiers for the World Cup, Hughton is aiming for a positive outcome against Madagascar to avoid a situation similar to Nigeria, who failed to win their first game against Lesotho at home.

Hughton emphasized the importance of the match in a press conference.

“I am very aware of how important these two games are. I know we have the AFCON tournament in January but at this moment all our concentration is on these two very important fixtures.”

“I know what they really mean to the members of the squad and for those that we work for,” he told the media.

Andre Ayew is set to make a return to Ghana’s squad after missing last month’s international break, although it remains uncertain whether the captain will secure a place in the starting lineup. The team faces a significant setback with the absence of Thomas Partey.

Coach Chris Hughton has the challenge of selecting players for the starting lineup, with Abdul Mumin and Kamaldeen Sulemana in excellent form. The addition of Abdul Fatawu Issahaku, performing well at Leicester City, provides additional options for the team.

Madagascar’s Tsiry Tokinantenaina and Jean Yves Razafindrakoto, both scorers in the previous match against Benin, are likely to retain their positions in the starting lineup for this fixture.

Ghana Black Stars head coach Chris Hughton has granted a first-time call-up to Medeama defender Nurudeen Abdulai for the upcoming crucial clashes against Madagascar and Comoros in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

Nurudeen Abdulai, who played a pivotal role in Medeama’s title-winning campaign during the 2022-23 Ghana Premier League season, garnered over thirty appearances and scored three goals. His contributions earned him four Man of the Match awards, highlighting his significance to the team.

Recognized by the Black Stars technical team for his talent, Nurudeen Abdulai is seen as a potential solution to the team’s defensive challenges.

The defender, who has already made 10 appearances in the new season, has been called upon to bolster the team’s defensive lineup in lieu of Rayo Vallecano.

The Ghana Black Stars will kick off their campaign by hosting Madagascar at the Baba Yara Stadium on November 17 before heading to Moroni for an encounter with Comoros.

Social media users mourn the late Raphael Dwamena

Users of X are commiserating with the family of Raphael Dwamena following the player’s unfortunate passing on Saturday, November 11, 2023.

He collapsed and died during a game between Egnatia Rrogozhinë and Partizani Tirana in the Abania League.

He fell during the 23rd minute in the game and received immediate medical attention after his teammates rushed to his side.

Unfortunately, much could not be done and he kicked the bucket at the age of 28 years. His death is associated with his heart condition as this is not the first time Dwamena collapsed during a game.

In 2021, the Ghanaian forward was hospitalised after collapsing in a football match between BW Linz and Hartberg in the Austrian Cup.

Now, Ghanaians and fans of Dwamena are left heartbroken as they recount the good years Dwamena spent on earth.

During his 9 years professional career, Dwamena played for 9 clubs including notable ones like Levante, Real Zaragoza, Red Bull Salzburg, and FC Zurich.

In his international career which was cut short by his heart issues, Raphael Dwamena made his Black Stars debut in 2017. He played a total of 9 games, scoring 2 goals.

Raphael Dwamena, who used to play for the Black Stars, has died after collapsing on the field during a game between Egnatia Rrogozhinë and Partizani Tirana.

Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio reported on an app on November 11, 2023, that the Ghanaian soccer player had a heart attack and collapsed on the field in the 23rd minute.

The team doctors quickly went to the field, but they couldn’t save his life.

Dwamena has been using a defibrillator inside his body since 2020, when his heart suddenly stopped beating.

In November 2021, he had a heart attack while playing for BW Linz in their OFB Cup game against TSV Hartberg.

Dwamena, who was playing, fell down on the side of the field in the 20th minute during the OFB Cup round of 16 against Hartberg.

The club let him go in 2022 because of problems with his heart. In January, he started playing for the Albanian team KF Egnatia.

In 9 years, he played for 9 teams, including Levante, Real Zaragoza, Red Bull Salzburg, and FC Zurich.

Raphael Dwamena started playing for the Black Stars in 2017, but had to stop because of his heart problems. He played 9 games and scored 2 goals.

Ghanaian forward Ralph Dwamena has passed on today after collapsing during a game between Egnatia Rrogozhinë and Partizani Tirana in the Abania League.

A year prior, Ralph had his contract with Danish club Vejle Boldklub terminated after the discovery of his heart problem.

Ralph had had a heart operation and got implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) in his chest to keep track of his heart rate.

During his 9 years professional career, he played for 9 clubs including notable ones like Levante, Real Zaragoza, Red Bull Salzburg, and FC Zurich.

In his international career which was cut short by his heart issues, Raphael Dwamena made his Black Stars debut in 2017. He played a total of 9 games, scoring 2 goals.

Govt rejects proposal of GFA’s move to sack Black Stars coach Chris Hughton – Report

There are emerging reports indicating that the Ghanaian government has opposed the proposed termination of Black Stars head coach Chris Hughton by the Ghana Football Association.

On Thursday, November 9, 2023, Asaase Radio disclosed that the Ghana Football Association (GFA) was contemplating dismissing Hughton during its Executive Council meeting.

The decision was allegedly prompted by the GFA’s dissatisfaction with Hughton’s performance and doubts about his ability to secure victories for Ghana in the upcoming 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Madagascar and Comoros.

However, the removal of Hughton required government approval, as the government is responsible for the compensation of the technical team.

Multiple reports suggest that the government has rejected the GFA’s decision to terminate the coach.

Sports journalist Muftawu Nabila Abdulai wrote on X, “Understand the Sports Minister met Cabinet on Wednesday. There is no green light on Chris’s sacking from the government’s angle. We await what will happen tomorrow.”

Another sports journalist, Fentuo Tahiru, also wrote on X that a top government official had said, “Chris Hughton is not going anywhere.”

Asaase Radio’s report on Thursday, November 9, 2023, also alleged that the delay in announcing the Black Stars call-up for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers was due to the decision to dismiss Hughton.

Muftawu Nabila also explained that “government did not approve Chris Hughton’s sack,” which is why the GFA decided to release the Black Stars squad to confirm that the coach is retaining his position.

According to Asaase Radio’s report, in the event of Hughton’s dismissal, George Boateng would have assumed the role of interim head coach.

Despite the government’s disapproval of the proposed termination of the Black Stars coach, sports journalist Saddick Adams asserted that a source within the GFA indicated that the scheduled meeting of the Executive Council of the FA would proceed as planned.

“A Ghana FA top official says they indeed have a meeting tomorrow but there’s no Chris Hughton sacking on the agenda. To the best of their knowledge, they may even invite Chris, possibly on his squad and prepare the team ahead of the two WCQs this month. In essence, even if they’d contemplate his sacking, the meeting tomorrow has nothing to do with that,” Saddick Adams wrote on Facebook.

In response to the reports on social media, GFA president Kurt Okraku also made a statement on Facebook claiming that the reports are false. “Lies is becoming the order of the day in the media space!!!” he wrote.

Chris Hughton was appointed head coach of the Black Stars in February 2023 and his contract expires in February 2024 after the 2023 AFCON.

Right there I had to apologise – Bright Kankam recounts his apology to Olele at Black Stars training

Ghanaian journalist Bright Kankam Boadu admitted that he had to issue an apology after making a derogatory remark about Black Stars goalkeeper Richard Kingson’s trainer.

Kankam explained that he had made the comment during the team’s training session in the USA in October.

Recognizing the disrespect in his statement, he felt compelled to apologize.

“I’ve seen people only complaining about the coach but what about those on the bench? We have to sack all of them. What is Olele (Kingston) doing? Our goalkeeper is good enough.”

He proceeded to recount the situation that had prompted his disrespectful remark during the training session.

“I said something that made me apologise. Right there, I said, ‘I’m sorry’. They were training and we went to watch them. We were very close to them. So he shoots and the goalkeeper saves, then the goalkeeper shoots for Olele to save.

“The goalkeeper saved one of Olele’s shots and Olele said, ‘No, no, move your body.’ Then I said, ‘Look at what he is doing.’ It didn’t come out well and it wasn’t right so I said, ‘I’m sorry’ and they took me out.”

During the October break, Ghana suffered defeats to Mexico and the USA, conceding a total of 6 goals in those matches.

Audrey and her long-time boyfriend consecrated their relationship on Thursday, October 26, 2023, and are now officially Mr. and Mrs.

Various family members and well-wishers of the groom and bride attended the traditional wedding to show their support.

A tweet by Asante Forkuo on Twitter announced the marriage, stating, “Coach Kwesi Appiah’s daughter Audrey had her traditional wedding today. Congratulations to her.”

In the meantime, Kwasi Appiah has expressed his aspiration to create history by guiding the country to its maiden FIFA World Cup qualification.

He also expressed his goals, which encompass creating a competitive team capable of qualifying for the next Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Appiah commenced his tenure as Sudan’s head coach on a positive note, guiding them to a rare victory against Chad, marking their first win since March.

The North African team secured a 1-0 victory over Chad in an international friendly held at the King Fahd Stadium in Saudi Arabia earlier this month, in October.

Although Appiah’s spell as Sudan boss has been slightly destabilised by the turmoil in the country, the Ghanaian coach said he still hopes to achieve his targets, having been the first indigenous coach to lead Ghana to the World Cup in 2014.

“The target I have been given is to build a team and ensure the team qualifies for the 2026 World Cup and the next edition of the Africa Cup of Nations.

“The only challenge is that there is no ongoing league due to the ongoing war, which has forced them to operate from Saudi Arabia but I hope order and peace will be restored in the country,” Appiah told Asempa FM, as quoted by Ghanaweb.

Black Stars maintains remain 60th globally, 11th in Africa in October FIFA rankings

Ghana’s standing in the October 2023 FIFA World Rankings has remained unchanged, despite the humiliating losses to the USA and Mexico during the recent international break.

The updated rankings were officially unveiled on FIFA’s website on Thursday, October 26.

The Black Stars have held steady in the 60th position worldwide and continue to be the 11th best-ranked team on the African continent.

These rankings mirror the same positions that Chris Hughton’s team occupied in the September rankings.

During the recent international break, Ghana suffered disappointing defeats, conceding goals in a 2-0 loss to Mexico in the first of two friendly matches on October 15 and enduring a humiliating 4-0 defeat to the US three days later.

The Black Stars’ head coach, Chris Hughton, will be aiming to regroup and improve their performance ahead of the November 2026 World Cup qualifiers and the upcoming 2023 Africa Cup of Nations tournament in January.

Kurt Okraku says he’s “disturbed” over the lackluster form of the Black Stars

President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Kurt Okraku, the , has addressed the concerning state of the Black Stars, Ghana’s senior male national football team.

In recent matches, the Black Stars have struggled to make a positive impression, causing growing anxiety among Ghanaians who are eagerly anticipating a victory in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament.

During the international break in October, Ghana participated in two friendly matches against Mexico and the USA.

Unfortunately, both of these encounters witnessed lackluster performances by the Black Stars, leaving little room for optimism.

The team suffered a 2-0 defeat to Mexico and a harsh 4-0 loss to the US Men’s national team.

Expressing his concern about the team’s recent uninspiring displays, GFA President Kurt Okraku emphasized his unease. He firmly believes that the national team must overcome these setbacks and strive for improved performances in the future.

“Our Black Stars must rise again but I’m a disturbed servant,” Kurt Okraku said in a post on Facebook.

Ghana next month will commence the qualifiers for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

The Black Stars will take on Madagascar and Comoros.

It’s time to let Inaki Williams go, he has nothing to show with Black Stars – Amankwah Mireku

Former Ghana international Yaw Amankwah Mireku has made a case for the exclusion of Inaki Williams from future Black Stars squads, citing the forward’s underwhelming performances since his debut.

Inaki Williams, currently plying his trade at Athletic Bilbao, burst onto the national scene with an inaugural appearance against Brazil.

Regrettably, in the ensuing 11 caps, the 29-year-old has yet to hit the back of the net, raising concerns about his impact on the pitch.

Mireku, a seasoned player for Hearts of Oak, scrutinised Inaki’s recent outings, particularly in the friendlies against Mexico and the United States of America.

He contends that Inaki’s contribution to the team doesn’t justify his continued inclusion.

“Since his debut for Ghana, what has he to show? Absolutely nothing. He is yet to find the back of the net upfront, and other players also deserve a chance to demonstrate their abilities,” he told Happy FM.

“Inaki needs to be excused from the team because, in over nine appearances, he has nothing to show.”

In contrast to his challenges on the national team, Inaki Williams has displayed impressive form at the club level. In the current La Liga season, he has scored four goals and contributed two assists in nine appearances for Athletic Bilbao.

These are bad periods but we will come out better – Chris Hughton

Black Stars head coach, Chris Hughton, has acknowledged that the team will encounter challenging moments, exemplified by the 4-0 loss to the USA, with the aim of emerging stronger.

During the international friendly at the Geodis Park in Nashville, Ghana endured a comprehensive dismantling within a mere 39 minutes, primarily due to subpar defending and individual errors. This marked their second defeat in the October international break.

Hughton, reflecting on the game, drew upon his extensive experience in the sport and asserted his confidence in the team’s potential to rebound with favorable results following disheartening losses like this.

“It is my responsibility to build this team. I have to work around some of the issues we’ve always had regards some players missing from the squad, trying to get consistency in the team and we will continue to strive to get the right formulas,” he told the press.

“I’ve also been involved in the game long enough to know that sometimes you go through what we regard as bad periods to come out better.”

The USA surged ahead in the 10th minute when Giovanni Reyna seized on a subpar clearance, and shortly after, Christian Pulisic extended their lead by converting a penalty awarded due to a foul by Gideon Mensah.

The third goal for the USA, which arrived in the 22nd minute, was handed to Florian Balogun on a silver platter, courtesy of another string of defensive lapses.

Ghana’s woes deepened as they conceded a fourth goal in the 39th minute, the result of a cleverly executed indirect free kick converted by Reyna, marking his second goal of the match.
