Chris Hughton insists he is “the right man for this job” after USA defeat

Chris Hughton, the head coach of the Black Stars, remains resolute in his belief that he is the suitable candidate for the coaching role with the Black Stars, even after the sobering experience against the USA on Wednesday.

Ghana suffered a humiliating 4-0 defeat at the Geodis Park in Nashville, Tennessee, during an international friendly. This loss marked Hughton’s second consecutive defeat, following the 2-0 setback against Mexico the previous Sunday.

Speaking at the press conference after the USA loss, Hughton said, “If you ask me if I feel like I’m the right person for this job, the answer is yes.”

The USA seized the lead in the 10th minute, courtesy of Giovanni Reyna, who capitalized on a subpar clearance. Shortly after, Christian Pulisic secured the second goal from the penalty spot, as a result of a foul on Gideon Mensah.

The third goal for the USA was a gift, coming in the 22nd minute due to a series of defensive blunders. Finally, in the 39th minute, Ghana fell further behind when Giovanni Reyna completed a well-executed indirect free kick to achieve his brace.

In a resounding international friendly match held on Wednesday, October 18, 2023, in Nashville, the United States handed Ghana a convincing defeat.

The American team displayed their dominance right from the start, dismantling the Black Stars in the first half with four unanswered goals.

The opening salvo came in the 10th minute when Giovanni Reyna capitalised on a poor clearance by the Black Stars and found the back of the net. Just nine minutes later, Christian Pulisic extended the lead to two from the penalty spot.

Folarin Balogun then added a third on the 22nd-minute mark, culminating in the Americans scoring three goals in just 12 minutes.

The final blow struck three minutes before halftime when Giovanni Reyna netted his second goal of the night from an indirect free-kick.

This result marks a disappointing week for Chris Hughton’s team, as they have now conceded a total of six goals in less than seven days, following their earlier 2-0 defeat to Mexico in Charlotte.

Chris Hughton fielded a starting XI that featured Abdul Manaf Nurudeen guarding the goalposts, with Inaki Williams and Jordan Ayew leading the attack.

Jerome Opoku made his debut for the Black Stars, while Mohammed Kudus and captain Thomas Partey anchored the midfield.

Chris Hughton explains reason behind Inaki Williams’ 10-game Ghana goal drought

Black Stars head coach, Chris Hughton, has offered insight into why Inaki Williams has not yet scored for the Black Stars since his debut against Brazil in September 2022.

The Athletic Club forward has made ten appearances for Ghana without registering a goal.

Discussing the 29-year-old’s performance for the Black Stars in anticipation of the international friendly against the United States, Hughton emphasized that Inaki’s work rate and dedication cannot be questioned.

“What we can’t do is we can’t fault the work rate that he puts in. He is a player that is prepared to run behind. We just need to get the formulas right where we are able to provide him with the service and the service can come in two ways,” he said.

“It can come from the wide areas or it can come from runs over the top. And I think over the period of time, we haven’t been able to provide him with that type of service. Some of that is sporadic; we have games where we have had good possession in the middle of the park and look for runners.

“Probably as I said, we need to find the right formulas to create chances for him. And upon until this moment we haven’t been able to do that.”

Inaki Williams, who made the switch from representing Spain to Ghana at the age of 28 in June 2022, may have an opportunity to score his first goal for the Black Stars when they face the United States on Wednesday at 12:30 A.M.

Kwasi Appiah to remain GFA Executive Council role despite alleged Sudan coaching job – Reports

Kwesi Appiah will not resign from his role as an Executive Council member of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), according to Joy Sports.

The 64-year-old was elected as a member of the Premier League representatives on the Executive Council during the 2023 Elective Congress in Tamale, a few days before his appointment as head coach of the Sudan national team.

Despite his role as an ExCO member and the head coach of Sudan, Appiah is also the Technical Director and a member of Asante Kotoko’s Interim Management Committee, constituted by the Asantehene.

Last week, reports emerged that the former Ghana coach would resign from his role but sources speaking to Joy Sports described the reports as “false and mischievous.

“The story is completely false because coach Kwasi Appiah is not resigning from the exco. It is a very mischievous story.

“The Sudan deal was on the table before he contested and won a seat on the GFA Executive Council, so why should he resign after he won the confidence of those who voted for him?

“Disregard all these false reports. Kwasi Appiah campaigned to football stakeholders and they were convinced by his plans to contribute to Ghana football in an administrative capacity after his contributions on the field as a player and a coach,” sources noted.

Appiah was unveiled as Sudan’s coach early this week and he’s hoping to lead the country to compete at the highest level of continental and global football.

He will be assisted by former Medeama SC and Dreams FC coaches, Ignatius Osei-Fosu and Fatau Dauda, as goalkeeper’s trainers.

Sudan failed to qualify for the African Nations Cup in Ivory Coast next year, and Appiah, renowned for building new teams from scratch, is expected to bring his experience to bear and build a new Sudanese team for the next international assignments.

He is expected to operate from Saudi Arabia anytime the Sudanese team has to be in camp for international assignments.

Kwesi Appiah will play his first game against Togo and DR Congo in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers on November 13 and 20 respectively.

In between, Coach Kwesi Appiah will be in Ghana to play his roles as a member of the GFA Executive Council as well as a leading figure of Asante Kotoko’s IMC, having received the blessing of the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, to take up the Sudanese coaching job.

Black Stars bodyguard reportedly assaulted US-based Ghanaian journalist

US-based Ghanaian sports journalist, Seidu Adamu, allegedly experienced an assault at the hands of a member of the Black Stars’ security team while at the team’s base in the United States of America.

The incident has been verified by the former editor of 442GH, and the assailant has been identified as Aziz.

Seidu Adamu took to his social media platforms to announce that he had reported the incident to the Barclay Down Police Department in Charlotte, North Carolina.

He also expressed his appreciation for the support he received from those who reached out to him following the incident.

The assault has garnered widespread condemnation from the journalism community.

“Thank you is not enough for all those who reached out to me after my unprovoked attack by the security detailed to the Black Stars of Ghana. Your calls, texts, and comments have been a strength to me.

“For me, it was a normal day to cover the activities of the national team, but individually or collectively, the people around the Black Stars had a different idea.

“At this moment, I cannot say the attack on me was planned by the top hierarchy of the Ghana FA or a singular act of senseless bravado from my attacker, whom I identified as AZIZ.

“Since the leadership of the Ghana FA cannot guarantee my safety in and around the National Team, I have taken the hard decision to return to my base and not make the journey to Tennessee, where the Black Stars are due to play the US Men’s National Team”, he said on social media.

On Sunday, October 15, at the GEODIS Park Stadium in Nashville, Tennessee, the Black Stars suffered a 2-0 loss to Mexico.

Currently, the team is in preparation for their upcoming match against the United States of America, scheduled for Wednesday, October 18, 2023.

The Black Stars have arrived in Nashville, Tennessee, in preparation for their upcoming match against the United States of America.

Ghana is set to take on the USA in their second friendly match in the early hours of Wednesday, October 18.

In their first game of the October international break, Chris Hughton’s team experienced a loss to Mexico.

The 2023 CONCACAF Gold Cup champions managed to secure victory with two second-half goals, marking Hughton’s first defeat as the head coach of the Black Stars.

Ghana will look to bounce back to winning ways on Wednesday against USA.

Black Stars are less familiar with Bank of America Stadium pitch than Mexico – Chris Hughton on defeat

Black Stars head coach, Chris Hughton, has attributed his team’s defeat to Mexico in part to the North Americans’ familiarity with the Bank of America Stadium pitch in Charlotte, USA.

In Sunday’s early morning international friendly, Ghana suffered a 2-0 loss, bringing an end to Hughton’s previously unbeaten run with the Black Stars.

During the post-match press conference, the former Brighton manager acknowledged that Mexico presented a challenging opponent, and their comfort with the playing surface played a role in the outcome.

“I think we knew we were up against a very good Mexican team playing at home on a surface that they are used to so we knew it was going to be a tough opposition.”

“I thought in the first half period we coped well even though we didn’t create the amount of chances that we would have liked to have done but I think we had reasonable good control of the game,” Hughton said.

Following a goalless first half, Mexico surged ahead in the 57th minute, with PSV forward Hirving Lozano capitalizing on Ghana’s defensive disarray to expertly slot the ball into the right post of Lawrence Ati-Zigi.

The North Americans extended their lead in the 72nd minute, courtesy of Uriel Antuna of Dynamo Moscow. The 26-year-old seized upon a well-placed through ball that pierced Ghana’s defense, ensuring their victory.

The Black Stars’ next match is scheduled for Wednesday at 12:30 A.M. at the Geodis Park in Tennessee, where they will face the United States.

In their international friendly match at the Bank of America Stadium, Ghana failed to register a single shot on target and suffered a 2-0 defeat against Mexico in the early hours of Sunday.

The Black Stars, under the management of head coach Chris Hughton, experienced their first loss in six matches, conceding two poorly defended goals in the second half.

Despite maintaining 54% possession, the four-time African champions managed only four attempts on goal, none of which found the target. Three of these attempts were made in the second half as Ghana sought to mount a comeback.

Ghana had opportunities to at least hit the target, but at times, their presence in the penalty area was lacking, exemplified by Joseph Paintsil’s cutback in the first half.

Following a goalless first half, Mexico took the lead in the 57th minute when Hirving Lozano of PSV capitalized on Ghana’s defensive disarray, slotting the ball into the right post past Lawrence Ati-Zigi.

In the 72nd minute, the North Americans extended their lead through Uriel Antuna of Dynamo Moscow. Antuna capitalized on a well-placed through ball that pierced Ghana’s defense, sealing Ghana’s defeat.

The Black Stars’ next match is against the United States at 12:30 A.M. on Wednesday at Geodis Park in Tennessee.

  • GFA explains sidelining of Dede Ayew from Black Stars squad

GFA explains sidelining of Dede Ayew from Black Stars squad

Ghana Football Association spokesperson, Henry Asante Twum explained that the Black Stars’ technical team omitted Andre Ayew from their recent squad due to his lack of club affiliation.

Twum stated that the Black Stars’ captain has been engaged in discussions with various clubs regarding a possible transfer.

The technical team reportedly communicated their decision to exclude Ayew, and the player accepted it with a positive outlook.

“…he is not someone you can easily do away with or you can easily replace; however, he has got his future to sort out. At the moment, he is club-less; he is talking to clubs; he is having meetings with clubs; and he travels a lot.

“So the technical team spoke to him to make him understand that they want to excuse him from these two international friendlies so that he can sort out his future.”

“He took it in good fate and gave his blessing to the team as far as the two matches are concerned and the technical team also wished him well as he looks for a new team,” he told Radio Gold Sports.

He stated that despite the captain’s absence, Ayew is still crucial to the team and that his engagement with the Black Stars is not over.

“So there is no problem as if the door is shut on him; it’s not as if the journey is over for him as far as the team is concerned and Andre brings a lot to this team.

“He is a useful part of the jigsaw, he brings experience to the table; he brings his leadership on and off the pitch.

“He provides loads of inspiration to some of these young players in the squad but for now, the coaches feel he should focus on his future, sort out his club issues, and then he will be considered going forward.”

For the October international break, Black Stars head coach Chris Hughton has selected a 23-man squad. After securing two victories in the previous international break, Ghana aims to maintain their momentum as they take on Mexico on October 15 and the USA on October 18, 2023.

The Black Stars will kick off their matches by playing Mexico at the Bank of America Stadium, followed by a game against the USA at Geodis Park.

  • If only I could go back in time, I would have redeemed myself – Asamoah Gyan on 2010 penalty miss

If only I could go back in time, I would have redeemed myself – Asamoah Gyan on 2010 penalty miss

Former Ghanaian striker Asamoah Gyan has expressed his deep regret and a wish to turn back time in order to redeem himself for his crucial penalty miss that led to the Black Stars’ elimination in the quarterfinals of the 2010 World Cup against Uruguay.

Gyan, who holds the record as Africa’s top scorer in World Cup history with six goals across three tournaments and 11 appearances, enjoyed a remarkable career with the Ghana national team.

However, his notable achievements have not been able to erase the indelible memory of that moment for many football fans, particularly Ghanaians.

In the 2010 South Africa World Cup edition, Gyan was presented with the opportunity to propel Ghana into the history books as the first African side to reach the World Cup semifinals, all thanks to a last-minute handball by Uruguay’s Luis Suarez in the penalty area.

Despite sending the goalkeeper the wrong way, Gyan’s penalty struck the crossbar, and the chance for glory slipped through their grasp.

Ghana eventually lost in the ensuing penalty shootout, missing out on a place in the semifinal when the spot was within their grasp.

Gyan remembered the painful incident, as quoted by Eurofoot, saying, “Till today, any time I’m alone, it still haunts me… Sometimes I feel like the world should go back again so I can redeem myself. But I know this is something that will haunt me for the rest of my life. I accept that because there is nothing I can do about it. I went there to save my country, but I ended up being the villain, which I accept because I know how people feel.”

According to Asamoah Gyan, the aftermath of the incident was a disaster for him, stating, “It was a disaster. It was crazy. I couldn’t sleep the whole night because I was crying the whole night until morning… All I was telling myself was to get another chance because I knew I could redeem myself, even if not football or something else. But even if I don’t, my kids will do it one day”, he added.

After 20 years of dedicated service to club and nation, Gyan announced his retirement in June 2023 at age 37, with 51 goals in 109 caps for the Black Stars.

  • Dede Ayew missing in Black Stars squad for USA, Mexico friendlies

Captain of the Black Stars, Andre Dede Ayew, has been omitted from Chris Hughton’s roster for the upcoming international break against the USA and Mexico.

Five players, including Andre, Jonathan Sowah, Baba Rahman, and Baba Idrissu, have been excluded from the squad that competed against the Central African Republic and Liberia in the previous international break.

In the meantime, Thomas Partey, Daniel Amartey, and Tariq Lamptey have returned to the 23-man squad.

Ghana concluded the previous international break with two victories in two matches and aims to continue their winning streak when they take on Mexico on October 15 and the USA on October 18, 2023.

The Black Stars will first face Mexico at the Bank of America Stadium before clashing with the USA at Geodis Park.

Since their 2-0 loss to Uruguay at the 2022 FIFA World Cup, Chris Hughton’s team has remained unbeaten.

  • Take a look around the multimillion-dollar hotel allegedly owned by Black Stars’ forward Inaki Williams

Take a look around the multimillion-dollar hotel allegedly owned by Black Stars’ forward Inaki Williams

Black Stars’ forward Inaki Williams, has reportedly erected a hotel in his hometown of Akyem Achiase, located in the Eastern Region of Ghana.

Images of the development surfaced online, with many Ghanaians commending the Spanish-born Ghanaian for investing in Ghana.

The hotel is nearing completion, with just a few final adjustments needed before it is ready for operation. It boasts various amenities, including a conference room, a restaurant, guest rooms, and more.

Interestingly, the hotel is named after the San Mames stadium, which has a seating capacity of 39,000 and is associated with the Athletic Club.

This has fueled speculation that Inaki Williams is the owner of this multimillion-dollar project.

Inaki Williams was born in Basque, Spain, to Ghanaian parents, and he has spent his entire life in Spain.

However, he made the decision to switch nationalities and play for Ghana in June 2022, choosing to honour the country of his ancestry despite his birth in Spain and his possession of dual nationality.

George Owu supports Andre Ayew’s presence in the Ghana squad, highlights his experience

Former Black Stars goalkeeper George Owu is urging Ghanaians to refrain from criticising Andre Ayew’s inclusion in the Ghana squads, even though he has faced inconsistency in club engagements lately.

The Ghana captain is presently without a club, having parted ways with Nottingham Forest in the Premier League at the conclusion of the previous season.

Nonetheless, he was named in Chris Hughton’s recent squad for Ghana’s matches against the Central African Republic (CAR) in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers and an international friendly against Liberia.

Ayew came off the bench to contribute to Ghana’s 3-1 victory in the friendly.

Despite the concerns raised by many Ghanaians regarding the 33-year-old’s inclusion, George Owu supports Hughton’s reasoning, emphasising the importance of experience as a key factor in Ayew’s selection.

The former Hasaacas goalkeeper believes that, at this stage, the team requires Ayew’s presence for stability since the current players are not yet fully seasoned.

“It is a new team with just a few experienced players. Andre Ayew and Jordan are the only experienced players. The likes of Kudus are now finding their feet,” George Owu told Onua Sports.

André Ayew has made significant contributions to Ghanaian football, including winning the U-20 World Cup in 2009. However, he appears discontented whenever he represents Ghana, primarily due to the treatment he receives from fans.

“We need to be patient with him [Andre Ayew]. There will definitely be a time when he will willingly announce his retirement but at this moment he is still needed.

“There are players who lack motivation to play for fear of criticism and it would take people like Ayew to elevate their morale.

“The insults and criticisms are needless and it won’t help the new player settling in,” he added.

Chris Hughton praises Black Stars’ performance and progress in recent matches

Head coach of the Black Stars, Chris Hughton has expressed growing optimism about the team’s future based on their recent performances.

Ghana recently faced the Central African Republic and Liberia in two matches held in Kumasi and Accra. The Black Stars emerged victorious in both encounters, providing a welcome relief for Hughton, who faced heavy criticism after his initial three games in charge of the team.

Hughton, an Irish trainer, conveyed his satisfaction with the team’s performances in the matches against CAR and Liberia, despite acknowledging areas for improvement.

“I have seen enough in the two games to always give me confidence. There are still things we could have done better. In the first half, we gave the ball away,” he commented after the Liberia game.

He also noted the challenging pitch conditions due to rain but pointed out that the team had sometimes been too careless with possession in the first half. Nevertheless, Hughton remained confident and optimistic, looking forward to the upcoming training camp.

The Black Stars will regroup next month to face Mexico in an international friendly match.

Former Black Stars legend John Paintsil begins scouting for young talents

Former Black Stars defender, John Paintsil, has stated that he has embarked on a scouting programme to unearth talent for the nation.

According to Paintsil, the new adventure is a form of giving back to the country because it was through the same means he became an asset at the Black Stars.

Speaking with GhanaWeb, he disclosed that late Ghanaian coach
Emmanuel Kwasi Afrane spotted him while he was playing in Berekum.

“Myself, Ofori Quaye, Patrick Villas, Isaac Vorsah, and Mamunatu Suleman We bring all these players to come and play for the young boys… I always say,

“Never forget where you come from. Always remember where you come from. because I was scouted by EK Afrane while I was in Berekum. So it’s good to follow in his footsteps.

“I believed that when they scouted me, I was able to do well for the nation. So I want to repay that and tell those young boys that they have the freedom to play. They are not in bondage, they are not in prison and they cannot showcase their talent. So that’s all about the scouting programme,” he added.

John Paintsil owns the John Paintsil Football Academy, which he named after himself. The team is now playing in Ghana’s low-tier league and hopes to qualify for the country’s second-tier league in the coming years.

I’m still young, and have more years – Jordan Ayew dismisses retirement rumours

Ghanaian forward Jordan Ayew has confidently expressed his desire to accumulate more caps for the Black Stars, emphasizing that he considers himself still youthful in his career.

Leading Ghana to a 2-1 victory over the Central African Republic in their final 2023 AFCON qualifier at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium on Thursday, September 7, the Crystal Palace forward demonstrated his commitment to the national team.

Having recently been voted Crystal Palace’s Player of the Month for August, Ayew completed the full match, earning his 91st cap for the Black Stars since making his debut in 2010.

He acknowledged that reaching this milestone at the age of 30 was unexpected, but he firmly believes that he has more games to contribute to Ghana, underscoring his determination and commitment to the team.

“I’m surprised because I did not even know. It is a proud moment and achievement and I’m still young. I want to keep going and even at club level because I feel fit and strong and I know I still have more years to come”, he said in a post-match interview.

“It is best to start the national team very early and I still have more years. It is very positive and I want to thank all the managers who were here in the past and now for the confidence and I need to keep going”, he added.

Jordan has 19 goals for the Black Stars and has gone on to represent the nation in two FIFA World Cups (2014 and 2022), as well as five Africa Cup of Nations (2012, 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2021), helping them finish runners-up in 2015.

At club level, Jordan is yet to find the back of the net for The Eagles but has contributed two assists in four games in the 2023/24 season.

Kudus is the face of Black Stars now- Asamoah Gyan

Former Ghanaian international Asamoah Gyan has showered praise on Mohammed Kudus for his exceptional performance in the Black Stars’ 2-1 victory over the Central African Republic in the final AFCON Group E clash, which took place on Thursday, September 7 at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium.

Kudus delighted Ghanaians when he delivered a skillful free-kick from just outside the penalty box in the 43rd minute, equalising the game shortly after the Central Africans had taken the lead in the 25th minute through Luois Moufat.

Gyan, who retired from professional football in June 2023 after a successful 20-year career at the club level, lauded Kudus as the standout player in the current Black Stars team.

In a post cited by GhanaWeb on Twitter, Ghana’s all-time top scorer said, “I loved how Kudus played. He was more composed and realised the ball at the right time. For me, he is the Star man on this Black Stars team at the moment. More room for improvement”, he tweeted.

Kudus made a high-profile move to English Premier League side West Ham United in August 2023, signing a five-year deal worth £38 million after a successful stint with Dutch giants Ajax.

He became the third Ghanaian to play for The Hammers, following in the footsteps of John Paintsil and Andre Ayew.

He made his debut for West Ham on Saturday, September 1, coming on as a substitute in the 91st minute during their 2-1 away victory over Luton Town.

Kudus made his debut for the Black Stars in 2019 and has since scored seven goals in 27 appearances.

Ghana secured a hard-fought 2-1 victory against the Central African Republic in a crucial 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier match held at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium.

The Black Stars, although playing at home, faced early pressure from the visiting Central African Republic team.

The away team took the lead in the 25th minute when striker Louis Mafouta found the net.

Despite this setback, the Black Stars managed to equalize just before half-time, thanks to a spectacular free-kick from Mohammed Kudus, who recently joined West Ham United.

In the second half, substitute Ernest Nuamah secured the winning goal for Ghana in the 82nd minute, clinching a 2-1 victory.

This comeback win ensures Ghana’s qualification for the 2023 AFCON tournament in Ivory Coast.

  • Black Stars face Central African Republic today

Black Stars face Central African Republic today

Although the Black Stars have already played five games, only one match holds immense significance in their quest to secure a spot in another Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament.

Ghana is set to host the Central African Republic (CAR) on matchday six of the 2023 AFCON qualifiers, and they require just one point to secure their place in Ivory Coast.

This game carries substantial importance for both teams, as CAR is also in pursuit of a victory that could tilt the scales in their favor, granting them a spot at the tournament.

For Ghana, two key objectives are in play: securing their AFCON berth and preserving their unbeaten record at the Baba Yara Stadium.

Since their loss to South Africa during the 2000 AFCON, when they were eliminated in the knockout stage of the competition, the Black Stars have remained undefeated in Kumasi. It’s worth noting that Ghana and Nigeria co-hosted that tournament.

Black Stars head coach, Chris Hughton has hinted that his players will do everything to ensure the record still stands.

“We will do everything that we can to get the result that we want to get. Preparation has been good. We are missing some players through injuries but it is also an opportunity for others,” he said on Wednesday.

“We are playing at home. We have a good record here and it is a record that we want to continue.”

Securing qualification for Ghana hinges on this outcome, a goal that Raoul Savoy, head coach of the Wild Beasts, is determined to achieve.

Savoy maintains the belief that his team has the potential to create an upset against the Black Stars, much like they did several months ago when they defeated Nigeria in Lagos.

“Nigeria never expected us to beat them at home but we did,” he told the media during Wednesday’s press conference ahead of the game.

“You never know [what we can do]. I have respect for Ghana because they are far better than us as a football nation but football is the most lovely game in the world because every time, every day you have surprises.”

With a touch of banter and a deliberate effort to maintain some distance in their words, these coaches are undeniably gearing up for what promises to be a captivating encounter.

The Baba Yara Stadium is set to witness a substantial crowd, and whatever significance has drawn people to the venue in the past, this match is no exception.

Kickoff is scheduled for 16:00 GMT, but rest assured that the atmosphere will be electric long before the referee’s whistle signals the start of the game.

Chris Hughton, the head coach of the Black Stars, remains unperturbed by the criticism he has faced from some officials within the Ghana Football Association (GFA) since assuming the coaching role.

The Irish-Ghanaian coach has been under substantial scrutiny, with Executive Council members of the GFA, including Randy Abbey and George Amoako, publicly expressing their reservations. Ameenu Shardow, the team manager of the Black Stars, also joined the chorus of questions regarding the team’s performance under the former Norwich City manager.

Mark Addo, the vice president of the association, has also voiced his concerns regarding the 64-year-old coach, who has secured only one victory in his three games since taking the helm of the Black Stars.

Nevertheless, Hughton has indicated that he considers such criticisms as a normal part of the job and tends to pay them limited attention.

“This is normal. This is something that I’ve found since I’ve been here…whenever I’m going to games, people and supporters will come up to me and tell me what they think,” he told Asaase Radio.

“So, one thing I’m always conscious of is football is highs and lows and when you are on the back of what I regard as a poor result, and our last result against Madagascar was not the result that we wanted is that there’s always going to be a reaction.

“This is for me, this is normal, can’t expect for everything to be good and to be praised all the time. I’m never affected,” he added.

The Black Stars have initiated their preparations for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against the Central African Republic.

In the first training session held at the Accra Sports Stadium, twelve players were present.

The coaching staff, under the leadership of Chris Hughton, oversaw a very light session. Assistant coaches Didi Dramani and George Boateng supervised some ball work during the session.

Goalkeeper coach Richard Kingston conducted specific drills with Lawrence Ati Zigi. Additionally, during the session, Ati-Zigi engaged in ball work exercises with a group of players.

Chris Hughton’s team currently tops Group E with nine points, holding a one-point lead over Angola and a two-point advantage over the Central African Republic. Madagascar occupies the bottom spot in the group with two points.

To secure qualification for the tournament taking place in Ivory Coast in January, the Black Stars require just one point from the upcoming match.

Her choices and ignorance of advice left her in this state – Veep Women’s Premier League

Vice Chairperson of the Ghana Women’s Premier League, Madam Rosalind Amoh, has strongly criticised former Black Queens goalkeeper Memunatu Salemana for attributing her current situation to earning meagre wages during her football career.

In an interview with Original TV, Memunatu Sulemana disclosed that she is currently residing in a kiosk in Kaneshie, Accra, due to financial challenges stemming from her football career.

However, Rosalind Amoh contends that Sulemana’s current circumstances are a result of her own life choices and behavior.

Speaking to Rainbow Radio, Amoh stated that Sulemana has made false claims and insinuated that there are undisclosed truths she could unveil.

“I didn’t want to bring it up, but I believe Sulemana’s current situation is the result of some life decisions and choices.” This is what will happen if you decide to live your life in a certain way and do not listen to advice.

“I’d be lying if I said Sulemana couldn’t make money while playing; aside from the amount the government gave to the players during the 1999 World Cup, she also made a lot of money from donations as a result of her exploits in the national team.”

“She had the chance to live outside of Ghana, but her life choices, which I won’t discuss, have gotten her to that position.”

Sulemana was a member of the Black Queen’s FIFA World Cup teams in 1999, 2003, and 2003.

She shared the stage alongside footballers like Adjoa Bayor, Alerta Sackey, and Mercy Tagoe Quarcoo. She also played club football for Post Ladies in Ghana and Pelican Stars in Nigeria’s Women’s Premier League.

Wollacott set to miss Black Stars game due to injury

Ghana’s important match against the Central African Republic (CAR) in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers is set to be without Black Stars goalkeeper Jojo Wollacott due to an injury he suffered last week.

During his debut appearance for Hibernian in the UEFA Conference League qualification match against Andorran team Inter d’Escaldes, the 26-year-old goalkeeper was forced to be substituted off after just 18 minutes due to a thigh injury.

Although he had hoped to recover in time to defend his new club’s goal, Wollacott will need to remain sidelined for an extended period due to his injury.

“He’s had his scan but we’ve not had the surgeon’s review yet. More than likely, in a best-case scenario, it will be a muscle tear. In a worst-case scenario, it will involve a tendon as well. Minimum, from all the information I’ve got, he will be ruled out for six weeks, but it could be worse than that,” Lee James, the coach of Hibernian, said.

Black Stars coach Chris Hughton is anticipated to reveal the squad selection for Ghana’s last match in the AFCON qualifications against CAR, scheduled for September 7. The most recent update regarding Wollacott’s injury indicates that his return will be delayed, as he has already been absent from the 2022 World Cup and recent matches due to a finger injury.

To guarantee their qualification at the AFCON, which will be held in Ivory Coast next year, Ghana must avoid defeat against CAR.

  • 10% withholding tax on betting, lottery winnings to start on August 15

10% withholding tax on betting, lottery winnings to start on August 15

The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has revealed its intention to initiate the enforcement of a 10% withholding tax on all gross gaming winnings, starting from August 15, 2023.

As outlined by the authority, the former 15% Value Added Tax (VAT) rate that was applied to each stake will no longer be in effect. Instead, the imposition of withholding tax will take place on the earnings accrued subsequent to each victory.

The GRA went on to elaborate that this updated policy aligns with the amendment made to the Income Tax Act 2023 (No.2), Act 1094.

Edward Gyamerah, a Commissioner of the Domestic Tax Revenue Division at the GRA, emphasized that stringent measures would be taken against any gaming company that fails to adhere to this new policy. He highlighted that firms found in violation of the law could face penalties, which might even involve the revocation of their licenses.

“From August 15, we expect that when you are making the payments, you will withhold 10 percent to the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA). As you have been appointed as withholding agents, the obligation is on you to withhold”, he said.

The GRA also disclosed a revision to the Excise Duty Act, which broadened the application of excise duty to include all fruit juices and altered rates for specific goods.

Chris Hughton gives update on Hudson-Odoi and Eddie Nketiah’s joining of Black Stars

Black Stars head coach, Chris Hughton, has affirmed that discussions are in progress to persuade Chelsea star Callum Hudson-Odoi and Arsenal forward Eddie Nketiah to change their nationalities to represent Ghana.

In what appears to be an extended dialogue about their nationality switch, Hughton elaborated that the players have provided compelling justifications during the numerous conversations held with them.

“We have been in contact with them not only on my time but I think before. I think it is a process and ultimately it will be about both of them making that decision that they want to play. But we have been in good dialog with them and some of it(reason) I think it’s understandable.”

While giving an account on Hudson-Odoi, he said the player played fewer games last season and is hopeful that they will reopen and speed up a conversation if Odoi settles at a new club this season.

“Two very good players. Hudson-Odi I think probably last season he didn’t play the amount of games he would’ve loved to play and it is more down to the system- three at the back.

“It looks like even if he was going to play he would have played mostly as a wingback. So hopefully wherever he goes this season, (he will) play regularly and maybe we would get the process going again,” he said.

The two Ghanaians born in the UK were reportedly on the verge of changing their nationality to Ghana, but the process encountered obstacles.

Amidst the speculations, Eddie Nketiah visited Ghana and obtained his Ghanaian passport.

On the other hand, Callum Hudson-Odoi is believed to be focusing on establishing his club career and regaining his form before finalizing his decision.

Both players have been on the Ghana Football Association‘s radar since 2020.

  • Chris Hughton details how he landed Black Stars job, rebuffs Gabby Otchere-Darko’s alleged influence

Chris Hughton details how he landed Black Stars job, rebuffs Gabby Otchere-Darko’s alleged influence

The prevailing narrative regarding the selection of Chris Hughton as the Black Stars coach revolves around claims that the decision was influenced by the government and imposed upon the Ghana Football Association (GFA).

Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko, a prominent member of the New Patriotic Party and a relative of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has been linked to orchestrating the appointment of Chris Hughton as the head coach of the Black Stars.

However, as Chris Hughton recounts the path that led to his appointment, he seems to absolve the government and, to some extent, Gabby Otchere-Darko from any direct influence.

During an interview on TalkSports, Hughton shared his experience of the discussions that ultimately led to him securing the coaching role, highlighting that the primary deliberations were conducted by the GFA.

“It actually started when I was on holiday in Ghana and we hadn’t done so well in the 2021 AFCON in Cameroon and the FA changed the coach and they wanted to bring in another coach…,” he said.

“Most people thought I was there for the job but that was not the case. It worked out because I was not working…I was asked if I will want to be a technical advisor for the two big games against Nigeria in the 2022 World Cup playoffs which we won.

“So the fact that we won, they asked me if I would want to continue this role going through to the World Cup because they saw me as an experienced coach and also have a Ghanaian background so I was asked if I could help. My role was to support the head coach and the technical team.

“Post-World Cup, I was asked if I would be the head coach and it didn’t take me a long time to accept,” he added.

His account of events seems to be in line with that of Gabby Otchere-Darko who also denied any involvement in the appointment of Chris Hughton as manager of the senior national team.

Chris Hughton was brought by the GFA not me. Chris and I have been good friends for a long time,” he told Kegyiwa Nankasa on his YouTube channel.

“He is a Tottenham fan and I am an Arsenal fan. The president is also a Tottenham fan. These things happen because God works in mysterious ways in putting strange people together.”

The legal practitioner added: “Chris is the choice of the Ghana Football Association and I think it’s a good decision.

“When there is a vacancy anywhere people lobby and at the time, people thought Hughton deserved the job. The GFA also needed someone who knew the team.”

Since his appointment in February this year, Chris Hughton has won one and drawn two of three games played so far.

”My contract is still with the FA and if he likes he can go and check the agreement we had and see before making the claim and he will know that he is wrong,” Akonnor stated.

”Both C.K and Milovan, once their contracts were terminated, we sat with them and negotiated their exit and C.K. was paid $100,000 immediately after the negotiation, same as Milovan.

”We still owe both of them and we have a payment schedule which I admit we have not followed because of constraint of funds. As and when we get funds we will pay the two coaches,” he assured.

2026 World Cup is a do or die affair, don’t go joking around – Sports analyst to Black Stars

Sports journalist, Saddick Adams, popularly known as Sports Obama, has issued a stern warning to Black Stars players, urging them to approach the 2026 World Cup qualifiers with utmost seriousness.

According to Adams, it is imperative for Ghana to qualify for the 2026 World Cup, and the Black Stars cannot afford to deny Ghanaians the opportunity to participate in the global tournament.

Adams emphasized that qualifying for the 2026 World Cup holds significant importance for Ghanaians, as the event will be jointly hosted by the United States of America, Mexico, and Canada.

Following the Africa draw for the 2026 World Cup, Adams revealed that his phone has been inundated with numerous messages from people inquiring about how they can attend and experience the tournament firsthand.

“The World Cup which will be played in Mexico, the US and Canada, you can go there as a player and miss a penalty in the final, Ghanaians won’t do anything. We just want to qualify.

“People have planned their lives since 2018 when they started telling me, they want to go and watch the World Cup and come back. It means a lot to Ghanaians and some people have started saving to go and watch the World Cup,” Saddick Adams said.

He emphasized that the World Cup is not merely about watching matches, but rather a tournament that possesses the potential to transform the lives of families and provide opportunities for Ghanaian youth.

He said, “This World Cup is not for football fans it’s for the general interest of Ghanaian youth. People have become interested in this World Cup. So, if you are a player don’t joke with this World Cup. If you know that you are old and can’t play retire.”

“There are travel and tour companies who have made plans for this tournament. People have become interested in the World Cup and want to support the Black Stars to qualify. Canada wants 1000 volunteers from Africa so we can’t afford to miss this. At least if they get 20 people from Ghana, they can change the destiny of their families forever,” he stated.

“It’s not only about going to watch the matches but it’s a year of massive emancipation,” the Sports journalist said.

The Black Stars have a significant responsibility to secure Ghana’s qualification for the upcoming World Cup, set to be jointly hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada.

Ghana has been drawn into Group I for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers and will face challenges from teams such as Madagascar, Comoros, Central African Republic, Chad, and Mali.

  • It’s a deception to think we can win AFCON, Black Stars is not ready – GFA Exco member

It’s a deception to think we can win AFCON, Black Stars is not ready – GFA Exco member

Executive Council member of the Ghana Football Association (GFA),Tony Aubynn believes that the Black Stars are not currently prepared to win the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Ghana, a four-time champion of the tournament, last lifted the continental trophy in 1982 during the event held in Libya. Since then, they have reached the finals on three occasions but were unable to secure victory.

They suffered penalty shootout defeats to Ivory Coast in 1992 and 2015 and were defeated 1-0 by Egypt in 2010.

In recent years, Ghana’s performance in AFCON has declined.

Despite previously making six consecutive semi-final appearances, they experienced disappointment by being eliminated in the round of 16 in the 2019 edition.

Their most recent AFCON campaign saw their worst-ever performance as they failed to advance beyond the group stage.

Tony Aubynn believes it is about time the nation admitted the team’s weaknesses and built on a long-term project.

According to him, it will be a dishonest target to aim to win the tournament anytime soon.

“We have talented players in Europe and in our local league but I wonder if we have a team.

“What we need to do as a country is to lower our expectations as Ghanaians and then build from the base.

“If we still believe we are good enough to beat Brazil or win Afcon at this level of our team, then we will be deceiving ourselves,” he told Akoma FM.

“If we win it’s fine but we need to build just as Senegal, Morocco and the rest have done in recent years now.

No need to rush Partey, allow him choose – Kasim Adams on Partey’s Saudi links

Player of the Black Stars, Kasim Nuhu Adams, wants Thomas Partey to use his right to free agency during the summer transfer window.

There have been rumours that Thomas Partey will leave Arsenal. In order to add additional players for the upcoming season, the North London club is reportedly prepared to offload the Ghanaian.

Partey has received a $10 million annual offer from various Saudi clubs, but it seems the player is not interested, despite Juventus of Italy reportedly being linked to the player.

Many supporters of the game have urged the 30-year-old to put money first due to the huge offer from Saudi Arabia.

However, Kassim Nuhu Adams believes it is crucial to allow Partey to make his own decisions without feeling rushed into a choice he may later regret.

Speaking in an interview on Max24Gh, the former FC Basel player said, “Sometimes you cannot advise someone to choose a club because if something happens there, he will blame you.”

“We will stay back and let him choose if he wants to stay at Arsenal for me it’s a club.

They are going to play in the Champions League, they have a lot of competitions to play even though they have signed players. One player cannot play all the games.

“For me, I believe in him, when he tunes his mind that he wants to play and train he will even though if they have other players there. We don’t have to rush him that much to choose a club that he does not feel like choosing,” he stated.

Former Togolese footballer Emmanuel Adebayor expressed his displeasure about Anthony Yeboah and other stalwarts of the Ghanaian game not receiving enough recognition.

Adebayor passionately discussed his childhood affection for Anthony Yeboah with fellow footballer Asamoah Gyan.

He feels that the former Leeds United striker has not received enough praise in his native nation.

He mentioned that he spent a lot of time looking for an Anthony Yeboah shirt to buy but was unsuccessful.

Adebayor expressed his fears that in some years to come the names of some Ghanaian football legends would be forgotten .

“I grew up knowing the name of Anthony Yeboah and up to today I’m searching for a place where I can get his shirt to buy but I don’t see anything in Ghana” Adebayor said.

  • Govt still owes ex-Black Star coaches, CK Akonnor and David two years after their dismissal

Govt still owes ex-Black Star coaches, CK Akonnor and David two years after their dismissal

Charles Akonnor and David Duncan, two former Black Stars coaches, have demanded payment for two years of their unpaid wages owed.

Two years after leaving their jobs, head coach CK Akonnor and assistant coach Duncan are still owed a cumulative $275,000 in salary.

Following the Black Stars’ defeat to South Africa in the 2022 World Cup qualifiers played in Johannesburg, both coaches’ two-year contracts were not renewed.

Akonnor, a former head coach of Asante Kotoko, is dissatisfied with the situation, according to a source who talked to Graphic Sports, and all attempts to address the matter have failed.

The source expressed disappointment with the poor treatment that the two local coaches have received although the expatriate coach, Milovan Rajevac who succeeded Akonnor has been fully compensated after he was sacked.

“I am aware Milovan Rajevac who took over from Coach Akonnor but was sacked after his disastrous campaign at the last AFCON was paid all his entitlements before leaving the country.

“How can we be so cruel to our own people? It is not as if the coach is begging for some money but he is only demanding what is due him look at how he is being treated. I don’t think it is fair and the authorities must intervene to avoid any future embarrassment,” the source lamented.

The GFA in their contract with Akonnor promised to pay a monthly salary of $25,000 when he assumed the position of Black Stars head coach in January 2020 and was entitled to his full salary if he was dismissed before the contract expired.

Unfortunately, Akonnor is still owed seven months’ salary, amounting to an estimated $175,000, along with the remaining four months that he was supposed to serve which is $100,000.

Meanwhile, David Duncan, who served as Akonnor’s assistant, had a monthly salary of $10,000, which is now in arrears for four months, in addition to other benefits.

  • Absence of Laryea Kingston cost the squad at the World Cup – Stephen Appiah

Absence of Laryea Kingston cost the squad at the World Cup – Stephen Appiah

Former captain of the Black Stars, Stephen Appiah, has revealed that the Ghanaian national team felt incomplete during the 2006 and 2010 World Cups due to the absence of Laryea Kingston.

Kingston, a key player who played a crucial role in the team’s qualification, was unfortunately suspended and missed Ghana’s opening game in the 2006 tournament.

However, despite his significant contributions, he was surprisingly excluded from the final squad for Ghana’s historic first-ever World Cup appearance.

Appiah, speaking on Joy Sports, attributed the decision to naivety, suggesting that the team could have benefited from Kingston’s presence, similar to how England relied on Wayne Rooney during the same period.

“We were naive [in 2006] about the rules… England took Rooney to the World Cup despite him being on suspension.

“If we had that knowledge in 2006, we would have pleaded with the GFA to add Laryea to the team because it was two games,” he told Joy Sports’ Prime Take.

Laryea yet again missed out on Ghana’s final squad for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa after he was drooped from the provisional squad.

“I am [pained] because Laryea was one of the players that when I look back, even though we played at the World Cup in 2006 and 2010, it looks as if we were not complete.

The former Juventus midfielder believes Kingston deserved and earned the right to play at the World Cup due to the sacrifices he made for the team.

“Not because of his football but he should have been there because of his sacrifices. He was part of those who sacrificed. To date, I still feel bad.”

Laryea Kingston disclosed that he was pained by the decisions to drop him for the two edition but that of the 2010 World Cup left him devastated.

“The 2010 World Cup was the one that finished me. Immediately after the 2006 World Cup, I joined the team again and I played all the games in the qualifies the friendly games and I was out again,” he said on MX24.

He added, “I was not on suspension and I don’t know what happened. A day before they moved to South Africa, I was asked to go home. I am still searching for answers and criteria they used to take me out.”
