Two missing after canoe capsizes on Offin River

Rescue efforts have been initiated at Atwima Mponua District, Ashanti Region, in search of two men who allegedly drowned after their canoe capsized on the Offin River near Achiase. The unfortunate incident occurred on Thursday, September 25. The canoe was carrying six passengers, two of whom are now reported missing.

Speaking to the media, a Unit Committee member, Daniel Adu, noted that the canoe’s paddler lost control as he is believed to be inexperienced. “All six people ended up in the water. Four were rescued, but the search is still ongoing for the other two, both adult men,” he said.

According to him, a similar incident occurred in 2021 on the same stretch of the river. He added that the canoe was carrying four people; while three bodies were retrieved, the fourth individual is still missing.

National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) officials who visited the scene initiated a rescue operation through Friday, September 26. Rituals were also performed at the riverbank by Traditional leaders to assist in recovery efforts.

In June this year, some seven students from Lawra Senior High School (SHS) lost their lives after the boat they were travelling on capsized on the Black Volta River at Dikpe.

The unfortunate incident that claimed the lives of five girls and two boys occurred on Saturday, June 14, during a routine morning jogging exercise

Per reports, the group of 10, part of the school’s cadet corps, was attempting to cross in an overloaded boat. Three other students were rescued and provided medical care as well as psychological support. According to reports, early morning jogging is a regular activity for the cadet team; however, the rationale behind the group’s attempt to cross the river remains unclear.

Reacting to the unfortunate incident, the Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu has instructed that a meeting be convened and its findings reported to him.

The Education Ministry has commiserated with the bereaved families as investigations continue.

“We share in the grief of the affected families and the entire school community. Our thoughts and prayers are with them in this extremely difficult time.

As the Ministry awaits a full report from the Ghana Police Service, we wish to assure Ghanaians that we will continue to do our best to ensure the safety and security of our students,” a statement signed by the Deputy Education Minister Dr Clement Apaak read.

This is not the first time lives, especially those of students, have been lost to drowning on the Black Volta.

In 2023, some eight students drowned in the Volta Lake in the Sene East District on their way to school.

This prompted calls on the government to provide life jackets to pupils and staff in island communities who commute by water.

Eduwatch Africa called on the Ghana Education Service and other relevant stakeholders to roll out measures to avert such disasters in the future.

“In the immediate term, we urge the Ghana Education Service (GES) to facilitate the availability of life jackets to all school children and staff who sail to and from school, not only in the Sene East district, but all other ‘island and settler communities’ where children and staff commute by water transport to school.

The GES should, in collaboration with the relevant state agencies, facilitate health and safety orientation sessions for all its pupils and staff in island communities”, portions of the group’s statement read.

The Ghana Education Service (GES) donated 100 life jackets and learning materials to the Atigagorme and Wayokope communities in the Sene East District. Then Director-General of GES, Dr Eric Nkansah, said the donation was an interim safety and security measure for school children.

Appearing before Parliament on Wednesday, July 2, Minister responsible for Interior, Honourable Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka, revealed a number of measures the government and its agencies will put in place to check the rate of drowning incidents involving students and others in rural areas.

This follows the recent boat incident along the Black Volta Basin that claimed the lives of seven students of Lawra Senior High School (SHS) on June 14.

The sector minister noted that there will be regular sensitisation of canoe owners or operators and residents along the Black Volta Basin, and sensitization of students and identifiable bodies on maritime safety.

He added that the Ghana Maritime Authority will provide life jackets to canoe operators along the river, conduct regular monitoring of canoe operators to ensure safety on the river, and ensure all canoes are regularly maintained.

Senegal brings back victims of the boat disaster

Over six weeks ago, 38 people who survived a boat accident near Cape Verde came back to Dakar, Senegal on Monday evening using a military plane, according to officials.

They are part of a group of 101 people who started their trip on July 10th with the goal of reaching the Canary Islands in Spain.

More than 60 people, mostly men from the fishing town of Fass Boye and nearby areas, are believed to have died after their boat drifted in the sea for more than a month.

People in this town are still feeling sad and angry because of the boat accident.

Some people, including family members, told the BBC that they were relieved to know that their loved ones were coming back home alive.

  • Egyptian physician who protected Jews from Nazis honoured

Egyptian physician who protected Jews from Nazis honoured

An Egyptian-German who helped a Jewish family during World War Two, Dr. Mohamed Helmy, has been recognized with a Google Doodle.

On the occasion of Dr. Helmy’s 122nd birthday, Google commissioned the piece by Berlin-based artist Noa Snir.

It shows the doctor’s “open-hearted nature” by displaying him with his arms spread wide.

Born in Sudan in 1901 to an Egyptian father and a German mother, Dr. Helmy subsequently migrated to Germany to pursue his medical studies. He eventually worked his way up to become the chief of the urology division at a hospital in Berlin.

When Adolf Hitler came to power in 1933, the persecution of Jews grew worse.

Non-Aryan people were also subject to prejudice, and Dr. Helmy was twice detained by the Nazis in 1939 and 1940, lost his job, and was forbade from marrying his German fiancée.

However, Dr. Helmy made the decision to support the family of one of his Jewish patients, especially a teenage girl named Anna Boros who, at one point, he mistook for his niece by donning a Muslim headscarf.

Search for 10 missing in Rwanda boat accident continues

Authorities in Rwanda are continuing their search for 10 individuals, mostly children, who remain missing after a boat they were traveling in sank in the Nyabarongo River.

The incident occurred in the country’s southwest region.

During the rescue operation on Monday evening, four people, including the captain, were saved. However, the captain has since been taken into custody by the police.

Local provincial governor Alice Kayitesi, speaking on Radio Rwanda, acknowledged that the boat did not meet safety requirements, such as lacking an engine and life jackets.

Boat accidents on the Nyabarongo River have occurred over the past decade, often attributed to old and overloaded vessels.

Some residents living close to the river rely on boat trips as a cost-effective and efficient means of transportation through areas that would take significantly longer to reach by land.

  • Over 59 killed as migrant boat capsizes off Greece

Over 59 killed as migrant boat capsizes off Greece

A tragic incident occurred off the southern coast of Greece, where a fishing vessel carrying migrants capsized, resulting in the loss of at least 59 lives.

Over 100 individuals were fortunate to be rescued in the aftermath, making it the deadliest shipwreck in Greece this year.

The exact number of people aboard the boat remains uncertain, with Greek authorities and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) suggesting that there could have been hundreds on board. The boat was located in international waters by a Frontex aircraft, the EU border agency, late on Tuesday, according to Greece’s coastguard.

Unfortunately, despite the rescue operation’s initiation, the passengers reportedly declined assistance and were not wearing life jackets.

Tragically, a few hours later, the boat capsized and sank, further complicating the search and rescue efforts due to adverse weather conditions, including strong winds.

The vessel was reportedly heading from Libya to Italy, and the majority of those on board were said to be men in their twenties.

A migration ministry source told the AFP news agency that “hundreds” of people were on board. “We fear there will be a very large number of missing persons,” the official said.

The IOM tweeted: “We fear more lives were lost. Initial reports suggest up to 400 people were on board.”

The nationalities of the victims have not yet been announced. Survivors have been taken to the town of Kalamata for treatment.

Greece is one of the main routes into the European Union for refugees and migrants from the Middle East, Asia and Africa.

Last month the Greek government came under international criticism over video footage reportedly showing the forceful expulsion of migrants who were set adrift at sea.

More than 70,000 refugees and migrants have arrived in Europe’s frontline countries this year, with the majority landing in Italy, according to UN data.

Reports indicate that the passengers were returning from a wedding celebration when the incident occurred.

The ill-fated vessel had been en route from Niger state to Kwara state on Monday, as confirmed by local authorities. The exact cause of the accident remains unknown at this time.

Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq of Kwara state released a statement expressing deep concern, stating that numerous casualties were feared and many individuals were still unaccounted for.

The Emir of Pategi, the area where the incident transpired, has sadly confirmed the deaths of over 150 people.

Governor AbdulRazaq extended his sincere condolences to the families and loved ones of the victims and emphasized that search and rescue efforts were ongoing to locate any possible survivors.

Regrettably, such tragic accidents are not uncommon in Nigeria. Just last month, 14 individuals lost their lives when a boat capsized in the nearby Sokoto state.

Boat accident on Lake Maggiore kills four

Tragedy struck on Lake Maggiore in northern Italy as a boat carrying over 20 passengers, including tourists, capsized and sank in strong winds, resulting in the deaths of four individuals.

The incident occurred on Sunday evening between Sesto Calende and Arona, with reports indicating that the boat overturned due to adverse weather conditions, including strong winds.

Five people were rescued and subsequently transported to the hospital for treatment. While unconfirmed, Italian media have suggested that the passengers onboard the boat were of British, Italian, and Israeli nationality.

Attilio Fontana, the president of the Lombardy region, described the incident as a “very serious” one caused by the inclement weather. Fontana shared on Facebook that the boat, which was approximately 16 meters (52 feet) long, had been rented by tourists.

Reports indicate that the boat was carrying around 25 people who were celebrating a birthday when a storm developed over the lake, escalating into what was described as a “small hurricane.” Shortly after, the boat capsized and sank.

Although all individuals on board ended up in the water, many managed to swim to safety or were rescued by other boats. The authorities promptly dispatched rescue divers, helicopters, and emergency services to aid in the search and rescue efforts.
