  • More troubles for David Adjaye as developer working with him on controversial Brixton tower withdraws

More troubles for David Adjaye as developer working with him on controversial Brixton tower withdraws

The architectural firm led by Ghanaian international architect David Adjaye, Adjaye Associates, has suffered a significant setback as the developer, Hondo Enterprises, reportedly pulled out of the 20-storey Hondo Tower project in Brixton.

Details contained on architectsjournal.co.uk said that the company’s contested plans for the office tower in Brixton were withdrawn by the developer just days before a key hearing on the scheme was due to take place.

“Lambeth Council narrowly approved the 20-storey Hondo Tower scheme in November 2020 but it was subsequently called in by London mayor Sadiq Khan in a reversal of an earlier decision not to intervene,” the report said.

David Adjaye was the architect behind the project

This is another major blow to David Adjaye since some three women accused him of sexual misconduct in a series of allegations ranging from sexual assault to harassment.

The report also stated that the Hondo Tower scheme was set to go before the GLA later this week, but following the withdrawal, which was indicated in a letter, the hearing has now been cancelled.

It added that the details of the withdrawal said that the developer had decided to to pull the scheme and ‘reconsider its position.’

“Unfortunately, the very long gestation period over the past two years has had a profound impact on the ability to deliver this much-needed jobs and skills boost in Brixton […],” portions of the letter to the GLA, from planning agent DP9, is reported to have stated.

The application for the site at 20-24 Pope’s Road was drawn up for client Hondo Enterprises, which is owned by Texan entrepreneur and DJ Taylor McWilliams.

Objecting to the proposals, Historic England (HE) inspector Alex Bowring said the 96m-tall tower would be ‘significantly larger than anything in the vicinity’ and cause ‘far-reaching harm’ to local heritage.

  • Britain’s first Covid infant patient died as a result of a misplaced breathing tube

Britain’s first Covid infant patient died as a result of a misplaced breathing tube

A coroner has determined that the death of the first infant to die from Covid in the UK was caused by the misplacement of a breathing tube.

On March 26, 2020, Ismail Mohamed Abdulwahab, then 13 years old, was transported to King’s College Hospital in London with symptoms that included fever, coughing, and vomiting.

His family was unable to visit him when he was transferred to intensive care the next day due to hospital procedures in effect at the time.

Ismail, from Brixton in south-west London, died of acute respiratory distress syndrome caused by coronavirus pneumonia on March 30 – three days after he tested positive.

Images of his funeral, which the family were unable to attend as they were self-isolating, circulated widely in the early days of the Covid lockdown.

They showed his coffin being lowered into a grave by four people wearing white protective clothing, gloves and face masks.

Hours before Ismail’s death, an endotracheal tube (ET) used to help patients breathe was found to be in the wrong position and a decision was made by a consultant in paediatric intensive care to leave it and monitor him.

Senior Coroner Andrew Harris said: ‘I am satisfied that he (Ismail) would not have died when he did were it not for the tube misplacement.’

  • Brixton shooting: Drill rapper and Deliveroo driver named as victims

The son of a boxing promoter has become the latest in a string of drill rappers who have died in violent attacks in London.

Lamar Scott, 27, who performed as Perm, was shot after a car chase in Brixton, south London, on Sunday.

His father is boxing promoter Dean Whyte who represents heavyweight Dillian Whyte, PA Media agency reports.

Deliveroo driver Guilherme Messias da Silva, 21, also died after he was knocked off his moped during the chase.

    No arrests have been made.

Speaking to Globo, nursing technician Rosângela Messias de Sousa, 46, said she “went into despair, screamed, fainted” after learning about the death of her son.

Detectives believe Mr Scott got out of the car after it crashed with the moped and other vehicles, before he was chased by another man and fatally shot.

The gunman is then thought to have got back into his car and fled the area. Police said he was still being hunted for.

The killings are the latest in a spate of gun attacks in the capital, including a triple shooting in Ilford, east London, on 25 October where Saydi Abu Sheikh, 23, who rapped under the name Giddy, and Zakariya Jeilani Mohamed, 32, who used the name Shifty, both died.

In September another rapper, Maximillian Kusi-Owusu, 29, known as M Lo, was shot in Kensington High Street, and on the final day of the Notting Hill Carnival in August, Takayo Nembhard, known as TKorStretch, was fatally stabbed.

  • Hacked to death: Gangster Salem Koudou dies in revenge for birthday party attack, court told

Salem Koudou, 19, was stabbed 32 times after he was chased by up to 15 people in Brixton, south London, jurors heard.

Darius Kwakye, 29, Donte McCalla, 21, and Tristan Bullock, 21, are on trial at the Old Bailey for his murder and an alternative charge of manslaughter, which they deny.

Opening their trial on Monday, Oliver Glasgow KC said there could be no excuse for the “murderous attack”.

The jury heard that on 20 August 2020, Mr Koudou – a member of Stockwell-based gang All ‘Bout Money (ABM) – and two others went out in a stolen VW Golf to attack rivals.

ABM was in a violent dispute with gangs known as 17 or Wandsworth Road, One Five-O (150) or Get Back Gang (GBG), and Four Ten (410).

After failing in one attempt, Mr Koudou and his companions went on to Brixton where they came allegedly across an “ideal target”.

Just before 6 pm, the VW Golf was driven head first into Kwakye’s parked Mercedes outside a birthday party on Marcella Road for Tyreicke Williams, 28, who was affiliated to GBG.

Mr Koudou got out with an “enormous knife” and began to chase guests, including Mr Williams and Kwakye, it was alleged.

Mr Williams fell to the ground and was set upon by Mr Koudou but managed to get away despite being hurt.

Mr Glasgow said the response was “immediate and violent”, “swift and aggressive” as party guests armed themselves and gave chase.

He told jurors: “The roles were now reversed, Salem Koudou no longer had the upper hand, and he had 15 or more people to escape from.”

    ‘No hope of survival’

Realising he was “hopelessly outnumbered”, Mr Koudou fled but fell to the floor and was set upon by members of the group, the prosecutor said.

Mr Glasgow told jurors: “In total, he was stabbed more than 30 times and the injuries he sustained were catastrophic.

“His lungs, liver, and stomach were damaged by the knives that were used to stab him, and the blades were wielded with such ferocity that some of the wounds were as deep as 14cm.

“Others damaged the bones of his rib cage, and one went through his skull.

“There was no hope of survival and yet seconds was all it took for this attack to take place, for his pursuers to have their revenge, and for the killers to disappear calmly as if nothing had happened.”

He added: “Given the build-up to this shocking violence, there can be no doubt that Salem Koudou’s pursuers wanted to avenge the attack upon Tyreicke Williams.”

The defendants, from south London, were allegedly identified as being among the group of men who chased and stabbed Mr Koudou to death.

However, Mr Glasgow said they do not accept CCTV and forensic evidence and deny that they had anything to do with the murder.

    The trial continues.
