Claims of military land allocation to Ibrahim Mahama false – Brogya Genfi

The Deputy Minister of Defence, Ernest Brogya Genfi, has clarified widely circulated claims that Ibrahim Mahama, brother of President John Dramani Mahama, has been allocated military lands by the government for development.

A Facebook post shared by the Deputy Minister on Wednesday, April 29, read, “I wish to firmly dismiss and ignore any false and malicious reports suggesting that military lands have been given to the President’s brother to develop. That story is completely untrue.”

According to him, the only thing currently happening is that the Ghana Armed Forces are undertaking a redevelopment project aimed at replacing aging infrastructure at Burma Camp in Accra.

He explained that Ibrahim Mahama who doubles the chief executive of Dzata Group Holding Limited is only in the news because he playing a significant role in the project. He added that “Ibrahim Mahama has generously donated GHC120 million as part of the replacement programme”.

The prominent Ghanaian entrepreneur and philanthropist is widely known for his generosity. Recently, he promised to reinvest in the Damang community following his company’s takeover of the Damang Mine in the Western Region of Ghana.

In a speech delivered during the handover ceremony held at the mine site on Saturday, April 18, where the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, performed the formal transfer, Mr Mahama, in response to a petition by the youth of the community, noted that he will construct two huge hospitals, concrete roads, and an airport in the community.

“So what I want to say is that whatever money we make from here, we will reinvest it here. The transfer of the mine to EMP is for everybody. It’s not for me. I also want to build my own personal house here, so I will be living with you”, the CEO said.

He said in two years the people of Damanag will drive on a good road network and in 6 months they will have an airport, pledging other development plans for the surrounding communities, adding that his promises aren’t political propaganda but “I beg you, this is not political talk. This is real talk”.

He said, “I want to make a pledge for everybody to hear. I got a message from one of our young men saying we should build astro turfs for all the communities, which we are looking to do. We have applied for the area to have an airport, and within six months, there will be an airport, so that we can fly easily from here.

“In the next two years, we will be able to drive from here to Cape Coast on a proper road. Not here alone, we will also extend it to the surrounding communities. We are looking to build hospitals. I saw the youth, are the youth here? My youth. Thank you. You talked about hospitals. I’m looking to build two large hospitals here”.

Mr Ibrahim Mahama pledged his commitment to demonstrating that Ghanaians are capable of investing in themselves, while promising major investments to benefit surrounding communities.

“I would say that, look, if we all put our minds together, this is a success story. And the plan I have for Damang Mine is not a joke. I just want to prove that we can invest in ourselves in this country,” he said.

    Background to the takeover

Discussions about the transition began about a year ago when the mining lease of Gold Fields Ghana Limited, under which it had operated for about two decades, expired.

Government, as part of its commitment to boosting local participation, declined to renew the lease and ordered the start of a competitive tender process to identify a new operator. However, it granted a one-year extension to allow for an orderly transition ahead of the final handover, which occurred over the weekend.

    The bidding process

As the mining lease for Gold Fields neared expiry, the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources announced a competitive bidding process on March 24 to select a new operator for the Damang Mine.

About four companies submitted bids before the March 31 deadline, which were reviewed by the Minerals Commission under the Minerals and Mining (Licensing) Regulations, 2012 (LI 2176).

Following the evaluation, Engineers and Planners, owned by Ibrahim Mahama, emerged as the winning bidder after meeting all requirements, including technical, financial, and regulatory criteria.

The Minister assured transparency and job protection during the process, following concerns raised by Gold Fields workers.

Authorities indicated that bidders were required to demonstrate strong financial capacity, including access to at least $500 million in funding, as well as technical expertise and operational readiness. Engineers and Planners met these requirements and secured the highest evaluation score.

The Damang Mine, located in Ghana’s Western Region, is one of the country’s major gold-producing assets and has played a significant role in the national mining industry for decades.

Government officials said the tender process and eventual handover are intended to sustain operations, protect jobs, and strengthen local ownership in Ghana’s mining sector.

    Minority reacts to transition

The Minority in Parliament has stated that the Damang Gold Mine now under the Engineers and Planners (E&P) Limited did not go through a “proper transparent and fair manner”.

In an interview with the media on Tuesday, April 7, the Deputy Ranking Member on Parliament’s Lands and Natural Resources Committee, Akwasi Konadu, insisted that the process was rushed and failed to meet the necessary standards.

“The same ministry goes ahead in doing that job on behalf of the President, sets up a committee with agencies appointed directly by the minister to oversee these processes and executes these processes just under four days. And you find this as going through a proper transparent and fair manner?

“You see, local participation is something that we all encourage but the process must be above par. That is what we look for, not anything. It must be so open such that any other person could put in a fortified bid. In this one, the person and the object are so bad that they do not speak well of us,” he added.

The Minority Caucus’ statement follows comments by the Acting Director of Legal Affairs at the Minerals Commission, Josef Iroko, who insisted that the handover of the Damang Mine to Engineers and Planners Limited (E&P) followed due process.

His comment comes amid allegations of favouritism in the awarding of the Damang mining lease to Engineers and Planners Limited. On April 1, the government initiated the official process to transfer the Damang Gold Mine from Gold Fields to Engineers and Planners after months of dispute over ownership.

  • Be ready to abandon normal life if you join GAF – Dep. Defence Minister to recruit canditates

Be ready to abandon normal life if you join GAF – Dep. Defence Minister to recruit canditates

Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) is set to begin recruitment in the coming days, the service has announced in a statement.

In light of this, the Deputy Defence Minister Brogya Genfi took to his official Facebook page and sent a cautionary reminder to all applicants who will make it for the recruitment and be shortlisted for training to join the force. He sent a stern caution with a patriotic call to service, highlighting the sacrifices of military life, which is quite different from that of the civilians.

His message read, “ All qualified applicants must be medically fit and be prepared to abandon all hope of normal life!.We are building a force that reflects the strength, discipline, and unity of Ghana”.

He continued that government is set to recruit about twelve thousand (12,000) personnel to boost the country’s defence. He added that the cost of recruitment forms has been slashed by 40 percent to ensure wider access and promote equality.

“The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) is undergoing a massive expansion beginning this week. Over the next 3 years, GAF will recruit 12,000 personnel to reinforce our national defence capabilities. In line with H.E. the President and Commander-in-Chief John Dramani Mahama’s commitment to affordability, accessibility and fairness, the cost of the recruitment forms has been reduced by over 40% compared to the last recruitment,” the Minister noted.

He emphasised that recruitment was free of charge, writing his text in caps to underscore the importance of his point.

“Let this be clear: Recruitment into the Ghana Armed Forces is NOT for sale, and will NEVER be for sale under our #EagleEyes watch. Any individual or syndicate involved in fraudulent recruitment schemes will be dealt with without mercy. Take Note that no recruitment will take place on social media. The process will be transparent and professional”, he added.

In addition to this, GAF’s recruitment announcemnt was issued on Monday, September 29 and signed by Acting Director General for Public Relations, Veronica Afei Arjun.

It announced a new development where the recruitment exercise would be conducted in all sixteen (16) regions nationwide.

This marks a significant change in the security force’s recruitment process, moving away from the traditional method that was largely centralised in a few selected centres, such as Accra, Tamale, and Kumasi. This, they explained, is to ensure equal opportunity for applicants nationwide, especially those in remote or underserved areas who previously had to travel long distances and incur high costs.

“The Ghana Armed Forces wishes to inform the public that the 2025 Enlistment/Recruitment Exercise into the Ghana Armed Forces will commence in the coming days at all the regional capitals of the 16 Regions of the country. This approach offers equal opportunity for all potential applicants in the entire country,” parts of the statement said.

GAF announced that the recruitment announcement would be made through its official website and Ghana’s two main state-owned national newspapers.

“The enlistment/recruitment exercise will be announced through the official Ghana Armed Forces platforms such as gafonline.mil.gh, gafrecruitment.mil.gh, in addition to the Daily Graphic and the Ghanaian Times newspapers,” GFA noted.

GAF issued a warning to the public to ignore any recruitment advertisements on social media, stating that no member of their force would issue such notices or ads.

“The general public is kindly informed that any purported recruitment links on Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp or any other social media platforms inviting people for protocol recruitment are a scam and should be ignored. Additionally, no such enlistment/recruitment invitation will emanate from any member of the Ghana Armed Forces or its High Command and should be ignored as well”, adding that “the Ghana Armed Forces counts on the cooperation of the general public in this endeavour.

The GAF’s issuance of strong warnings comes on the back of fraudulent recruitment schemes that have surged over the years, especially on social media platforms like Facebook, WhatsApp, and Instagram. These scams often promise “protocol recruitment”, implying backdoor access and demanding payment from desperate applicants.

Scammers impersonate senior officers, circulate fake enlistment links, and charge fees for guaranteed placement.

Over the years, some scammers have often pegged protocol fees ranging from GH¢2,000 to GH¢10,000, depending on the scammer’s promises and the desperation of the applicant. Some victims paid multiple instalments, believing they were securing officer roles or fast-tracked enlistment.

These payments were often made in cash or mobile money, with no receipts, making prosecution difficult. The GAF has repeatedly stated that recruitment is free, and any payment demand is criminal.

Meanwhile, GAF is actively contributing to ECOWAS regional security efforts through the 2024–2025 Standby Force collaboration. This involves joint training exercises, intelligence sharing, and border security coordination with neighbouring countries such as Côte d’Ivoire, Burkina Faso, and Togo.

Ghana’s activation to contribute to the ECOWAS Standby Force (ESF) followed a major decision on 15 September, when ECOWAS Defence and Finance Ministers met in Abuja, Nigeria, to finalise funding and deployment arrangements. This marked a pivotal step in strengthening regional security in response to growing threats in the Sahel corridor.

Subsequently, a Tripartite Meeting of Commandants from ECOWAS Training Centres of Excellence was held in Accra from 17 to 19 September 2025, hosted by the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre (KAIPTC). At the meeting, Ghana’s troop readiness, logistical capacity, and training contributions were thoroughly assessed.

The ECOWAS Standby Force is expected to begin operations in early 2026, with Ghana contributing personnel, equipment, and strategic support. As part of preparations, the 48 Engineer Regiment and Northern Command (Nyohini Camp, Tamale) have already undergone inspection and clearance for deployment.

Ghana will join a broader Multi-National Joint Task Force with Benin, Burkina Faso, Côte d’Ivoire, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, and Togo, working together to combat terrorism, transnational crime, and instability across West Africa.

  • Pablo instigated NPP communicators to attack me – Sammy Gyamfi

National Communications Officer of the NDC, Sammy Gyamfi, has accused the party’s re-elected Youth Organiser of hiring members from their biggest contender, the NPP, to openly vilify and attack him.

According to him, Pablo, whose mandate as National Youth Organiser was renewed last Saturday, held a meeting with NPP communicators last night and fed them with narratives to malign his person.

Speaking on Accra-based Onua TV on Wednesday morning, he explained that some of the NPP communicators who Pablo met last night, later called him to leak Pablo’s dubious intentions.

He said those communicators wondered why Pablo, a national executive of the NDC would want to stab a fellow executive, in the person of Sammy Gyamfi.

The NDC spokesperson however refused to mention the names of his informants, but tressed that George Opare Addo, popularly known as ‘Pablo’, was behind the scheme to have his name soiled.

“He met them (NPP communicators) last night and fed them with false narratives”, he stressed in the local Twi dialect.

However, the campaign coordinator for George Opare Addo, Abubakar Mutiu-Rahman, has refuted the said allegations by the NDC’s National Communications Officer.

In a statement shortly after Sammy Gyamfi’s claims on Onua TV on Wednesday morning, Mutiu-Rahman said Pablo has not met any NPP communicator as Sammy Gyamfi alleged.

He said Pablo is committed to the cause of the NDC and would not embark on any such treacherous move to destroy the party.

“The claim that Pablo met with NPP Communicators yesterday is false, at no point has Pablo met any NPP communications team, not previously or yesterday.

Mr Gyamfi must prove when and where this meeting took place as well as who the participants were”, the statement emphasised.

“There is no greater insult than the claim of being a traitor to one’s party; we will not countenance any more of such allegations from Sammy Gyamfi and his ilk. We will allow this to slide but let no one mistake it for cowardice.

Pablo is very much committed to leading a united front for the NDC Youth Wing. He’s willing to work with all and sundry to ensure HE John Dramani Mahama is elected President, so we can rescue this nation”, the statement concluded.

The comments by both parties come in the wake of the outcome of the NDC’s recently held National Youth and Women’s Congress.

At the said Congress, the incumbent National Youth Organiser, George Opare Addo, retained his seat in a keen contest again former Ashanti Regional Youth Organiser, Brogya Genfi.

However, the supporters of Pablo as well as himself believed that Brogya Genfi was supported by Sammy Gyamfi and other bigwigs in the NDC; including close associates of former President, John Dramani Mahama.

This has subsequently created a feud between Sammy Gyamfi and Pablo and his allies.

Speaking on Asempa FM yesterday, Pablo said he is disappointed in the schemes that were orchestrated by Sammy Gyamfi to remove him.

Meanwhile, the NDC’s National Communications Officer says he supported Brogya Genfi based on his rapport with him; adding that he did not go on rampage to attack Pablo during the contest.

Speaking on Onua TV, Sammy Gyamfi also denied the allegations that close associates of Mahama, such as the former Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, were all behind Brogya Genfi.

He further discounted Pablo’s claims that he had spoken about his health during the campaign period.

  • It’s a prophesy and I receive it – Sammy Gyamfi on claims he owns a mansion

National Communication Officer, Sammy Gyamfi, has fought off claims he owns a mansion at Airport Hills.

He says he’s not the owner of any mansion as being purported on social media.

Speaking in an interview with Onua FM’s Captain Smart, he described such claims as a prophetic declaration which he welcomes unreservedly.

“I am not the owner of any of the mansions displayed on Social media. It’s a prophesy and I receive it. It is my prayer that I can own such a mansion and in fact the house I intend to construct which is currently underway will be five times bigger that what is being displayed,” he said.

He also dismissed reports that he owns six Land Cruisers.

“There are reports that I have six Land Cruisers. That’s also false. I only have one land cruiser and that’s even I gift I received due to my affiliation with John Dramani Mahama,”

Mr Sammy Gyamfi and a mansion believed to be situated at Airport Hills have been trending on social media, following the first phase of the NDC National Delegates Conference which was held in Cape Coast. According to reports this building belongs to the NDC Communications Director, Sammy Gyamfi. This claims has been alleged by many including the re-elected NDC National Youth Organiser, George Opare Addo.

Mr Opare Addo challenged Sammy Gyamfi to come out and explain how he financed those projects.

However, Mr Gyamfi has challenged such reports insisting they are false.

  • Brogya Genfi calls out Opare Addo, others for deliberately frustrating TEIN presidents

A National Youth Organiser aspirant for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Brogya Genfi, has called out the incumbent Organiser, George Opare Addo, and other leaders of the party for frustrating TEIN presidents during their just-ended regional elections.

In a statement, the aspirant indicated that the elections proved again that some leaders of the party do not treat members of the TEIN, the tertiary students’ wing of the NDC, well.

He explained that he was a victim of some of these ‘maltreatments.’

“I must observe that the elections although hugely successful, once again highlighted the continuous mistreatment and marginalisation of the intellectual wing of the party – the TEIN front. I personally witnessed this mistreatment in various incidents and reports that emanated from the Regions, and I join our teeming hard working TEIN youth in expressing our revulsion and total condemnation of same.

“Regrettably in a few regions, the TEIN fraternity was subjected to clear manipulation, intimidation and open abuse in the lead up and on the actual day of elections as they tried to exercise their franchise as a recognised outfit under the youth wing. We cannot reward the hard work of our TEIN leaders with this level of frustration,” he wrote.

Brogya Genfi added that he was particularly surprised that the National Youth Organiser of the part, George Opare Addo, was at the forefront of such unhealthy activities.

“The most unfortunate part of this whole spectacle was the fact that the National Youth Organizer of the NDC, George Opare Addo (who promised TEIN some few months ago that their voices will be heard at congress) was the main architect and mastermind who undermined the credibly approved and accredited TEIN institutions and tried to deny their voting rights. How could we be this unfair to the young people who on a daily basis put in the toil and hard work to project the party on various campuses?” he added.

He advised that the leadership of the party takes immediate steps to correct these anomalies so that it does not escalate and affect their fortunes in the future.

    Read his full statement below:

THE DELIBERATE FRUSTRATION OF TEIN PRESIDENTS IN NDC YOUTH CONFERENCES IS SHAMEFUL AND UNACCEPTABLE.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC), over the weekend successfully conducted Regional conferences to elect new regional leaders, including youth organisers in thirteen out of the sixteen regions of the country.

The spirit of comradeship that was displayed across the regions, and particularly, the positive energy of the youth convinced me beyond doubt that the NDC youth are poised to lead and drive the forward match of our great party back to the seat of government in 2024. I hereby seize this opportunity to congratulate all winners in the Regional youth elections and to wish all who did not win, better luck next time. Be rest assured that there will be a place for all of you under a leadership of courage and united purpose for our collective ultimate victory

Having said this, I must observe that the elections although hugely successful, once again highlighted the continuous mistreatment and marginalisation of the intellectual wing of the party – the TEIN front. I personally witnessed this mistreatment in various incidents and reports that emanated from the Regions, and I join our teeming hard working TEIN youth in expressing our revulsion and total condemnation of same.

Regrettably in a few regions, the TEIN fraternity was subjected to clear manipulation, intimidation and open abuse in the lead up and on the actual day of elections as they tried to exercise their franchise as a recognised outfit under the youth wing. We cannot reward the hard work of our TEIN leaders with this level of frustration.

The most unfortunate part of this whole spectacle was the fact that the National Youth Organizer of the NDC, George Opare Addo (who promised TEIN some few months ago that their voices will be heard at congress) was the main architect and mastermind who undermined the credibly approved and accredited TEIN institutions and tried to deny their voting rights. How could we be this unfair to the young people who on a daily basis put in the toil and hard work to project the party on various campuses?

There is however a window of opportunity for redemption, and it is my expectation that the right thing will be done this time around. As the party prepares to hold elections in three remaining Regional Youth Elections yet to be held, we must right the wrongs to avoid the ugly scenes we witnessed in the other regions where TEIN delegates were deliberately frustrated and prevented by an incumbent who should be representing their interest. This should present a golden opportunity for the party to restore hope in TEIN by adhering strictly to the FEC approved TEIN delegates list.

More importantly, the party must cease this opportunity to revive the lost hope and restore confidence in TEIN at the level of the upcoming National Youth Election. TEIN remains the production line of the party for breeding future leaders. All party leaders, elders and stakeholders must therefore rise to the occasion and join hands to fight off any repeated attempt to disenfranchise TEIN at the National Youth Conference. Suffice it to add that any such repeated attempt at the national level, will be mightily resisted.

It is my vision and solemn pledge to reposition TEIN to become a potent vehicle for mobilization for the party’s 2024 victory. The anticipated repositioning of TEIN will help mobilize first-time voters for the party, and serve as agents to secure the ballots at the polling stations. Therefore, any one or group of persons who are allowed to dampen the spirit of the TEIN front will be dealing the party a fatal blow as same will amount to handing a license to someone to hurt the NDC 2024 electoral fortunes, for their own parochial interest. Our victory in 2024 is non-negotiable and must not be toyed with.
