My son’s seniors in Adisco gave him 50p to buy 20 sachet water – Parent shares son’s bully story

A troubling storm seems to be brewing in one of Ghana’s prestigious Senior High Schools, Adisadel College, as there have been recent reports of bullying in the school.

Chilling accounts of seniors unleashing all forms of abuses on their subordinates or juniors  in the name of ‘seniority’ now stand exposed, casting a chilling light on the silent suffering endured by students.

A brave parent has stepped forward to attest to this harrowing reality, sharing more heart-wrenching revelations that have shaken the very foundation of the revered educational institution.

In an interview with General Manager of Citi FM and Citi TV, who doubles as the host of the Citi Breakfast Show, Bernard Avle, the parent who spoke on anonymity, said

What was initially trivialised and regarded as a normal school culture, was later discovered to be a severe nightmare for most students, especially his son who is currently in his second year in school.

Mr Addo (nor his real name) said his son came home after his first vacation, lamenting bitterly over the situation.

“Initially, I laughed over it since I have been a student and I have been there before and I know that it’s part of school life but then, he came home during his second and he said they could not even sleep due to torment from their seniors who were completing school,” he said.

“They [seniors] use the hook of belts to flog them [juniors] and when they are coming, they come in a group like 8, 10, 20. So when they come, you can’t do anything and they will be beating you from any angle.

He also recounted an incident where his son was given 50 pesewas to buy 20 sachets of water.

“They gave my boy 50 pesewas to go and buy about 20 sachets for the seniors and he said I don’t have anything on me. How can I use 50 pesewas to buy 20 sachets of water? That was the only thing he told them. How they beat my boy. I was so mad and that is why I called the master,” he said.

He added that upon reaching out with a complaint to a teacher about the incidents, he was told that even the highest authorities cannot do anything about the situation.

So the teacher told me even the Senior House master when they are walking they walk with a cutlass. The House masters while walking on campus, some of them put some gadgets on them because they are scared of the students. Because they can be attacked,” he said.

This comes on the back of a trending video which made waves on social media in which a student from the Adisadel college, a renowned institution for nurturing young minds and shaping future leaders, is seen bullying another student.

Reports indicate that the incident was over a SIM which belonged to the recipient of the abuse, which had been seized by the abuser.

The Ghana Education Service and school authorities have taken up the matter and spelled out sanctions to both perpetrators and the recipient of the abuse, as well as the student who recorded the incident and others who were in the dormitory and refused to report the incident.

Amidst investigations into a recent assault by a final year student against a colleague in Quaque House, it has emerged that Adisadel College in the Central Region is in a state of mayhem as authorities have lost control over the students.

Currently, Housemasters of the school carry along weapons such as cutlass, whenever they get to campus, according to a concerned parent who enrolled his son in the second cycle institution in 2021.

In an interview on CitiFM, the anonymous male parent cited a teacher of the school as his source of information. He noted that Housemasters do so as a form of protection against the hostile students. This, he says has been happening for at least two years.

“So the teacher told me even the Senior House master when they are walking they walk with a cutlass. The House masters while walking on campus, some of them put some gadgets on them because they are scared of the students. Because they can be attacked,” he said.

He stressed: “I don’t know what is going on at that school. It is so terrible. Law and order has broken down in the school completely.”

The aggrieved parent used the opportunity to also highlight the brutality meted against his son.

He recounted the period when his ward was tasked by a group of seniors to purchase 20 sachets of water with 50 pesewas. Failing to execute the task, the young boy was pounced upon and beaten.

“They will use the belt and hook. When they are coming, they come in a group like 8, 10, 20. So when they come, you can’t do anything. So they will be beating you from any angle.

They gave my boy 50 pesewas to go and buy water about 20 sachets for the seniors and he said I don’t have anything on me. How can I use 50 pesewas to buy 20 sachets of water. That was the only thing he told them. How they beat my boy. I was so mad. That is why I called the master,” he bitterly narrated.

According to the parent, he has on several occasions informed school authorities of the reports he receives from his son, however, their response remains ” the students – that is how they have been behaving.”

He noted that he has not been able to raise the issue during a Parent and Teachers Association (PTA) meeting due to the track system.

“Normally because of the system they are running, my boy is in the house now and they are in school, so sometimes, the PTA will come on while the guys are in house. I try to communicate with the Headmaster and the assistant Headmaster. You will say it and they will say the students that is how they have been behaving.”

The parent noted that he was been compiling the relevant evidence to provide the Ghana Education Service.

His plea is “I want that thing to be stopped” as “the bullying is getting out of hand in Adisadel College.”

  • I don’t want to see the video – Mother of assaulted Adisco student

I don’t want to see the video – Mother of assaulted Adisco student

Mother of the Adisadel College student who was brutally assaulted by another student in a viral video has said she has not watched the video and does not want to see it.

Ms Margaret Annor Afari, speaking to the media on Tuesday, July 25, said she was only informed of the incident on Monday, July 24, by the housemaster of the school, after the video had been widely circulated on social media.

“I don’t want to see the video. I have heard it being described but I have not seen it, and I don’t want to see it. It was the elder brother who saw it yesterday and called the housemaster, who later called me to explain the incident,” Ms Margaret said amid tears.

She also appealed to the school authorities to allow her son (the victim), who has been suspended, to write his final exams.

The victim confirmed that the assault was over a SIM card that the attacker had taken from him and refused to return.

“He had my SIM card, and I asked for it back, but he refused, and that is what started the fight,” he said.

The incident happened on June 30, 2023, at the Quaque House dormitory of Adisadel College in Cape Coast.

The video showed a senior student choking and hitting a junior student against a metal bunk bed, causing him to bleed from his head.

The Ghana Education Service (GES) condemned the barbaric act of violence and commended the school for taking swift action to suspend the culprit pending further investigation.

The culprit has also been dismissed from the school and referred to the police for further action.

The student who recorded the video and other witnesses who failed to report or intervene will also face sanctions from the school.

The housemaster and his deputy have also been suspended pending the outcome of the findings by GES.

My daughter was bullied in school because of my fame – Davido

Crooner David Adeleke, known in showbiz circles as Davido, has spoken out about how being famous has had a negative impact on those close to him, particularly his children, nieces, and nephews.

He made this known while featuring as a guest in a recent episode on ABtalks podcast.

According to the singer, fame comes with its good and bad sides, adding that he has been a recipient of both outcomes.

The OBO crooner said that his family also gets to be affected by his fame, recounting an experience where his nephew and nieces had to switch schools because of the treatment they got on account of them being related to him.

The singer added that his own daughter was once bullied in school for being his daughter.

“I would lie to you if I say I don’t like fame. I mean it has its good and bad parts. I get anything I want with this face and with this smile but it gets stressful too cos it affects the private aspect of my life and my family.

“Like my dad will just send me something on the blog, like ‘what’s this?’, and I am like, ‘it’s a lie, don’t worry about that.’

“And even things I do affect my family. Anything I do as Davido will affect my family just like my sister had to move her kids out of some school because everyone knew this is Davido’s nephew and niece and it was weird because of how people treated them, so now they are in different schools, and when they know they are related to me, it is always crazy.

“My daughter was even getting bullied in school cos she was my daughter….so fame has good sides but also bad sides.”

  • Teacher’s bullying allegedly triggers 14-year-old’s suicide attempt

Teacher’s bullying allegedly triggers 14-year-old’s suicide attempt

A 14-year-old female Junior High School (JHS) pupil attempted to take her life after what has been described as ‘constant bullying’ by a teacher from her school.

The attempted suicide occurred Thursday, April 20, 2023, at Anweabeng, in the Abuakwa North Constituency in the Eastern Region.

The victim, a Form Two pupil of Anweabeng Municipal Assembly (M/A) JHS, who doubles as the Girl’s Prefect, survived the incident after a swift intervention by her aunt.

Angelonline.com.gh understands that the victim, [name withheld], tried to end her life during class hours after she could no longer bear the constant accusation and torment she had come under.

According to sources, the said teacher had been accusing the victim and three of her juniors at the primary level of spreading false rumours about her.

    Accusation

The female teacher and two colleagues were said to have recently been on the neck of the pupils for supposedly making some unpleasant comments against them after last term’s Basic School Sports festival held at Samlesi Salvation Army school, a suburb of Yilo Krobo.

Back from the sports festival, the teachers [Class 1, 2, and 3] claimed the students had speculated in the Anweabeng community that they were ‘drunk and misbehaved’ while the games were ongoing.

However, the four accused students denied knowledge of the accusations against them.

Meanwhile, reports had it that the teachers repeatedly called out the four pupils during class hours, paraded them, and intimidated them to speak the ‘truth’.

    Attempted Suicide

The Girls’ prefect was reportedly singled out by the class three teacher, identified as Madam Dodzie Abigail and was at the receiving end of her bullying.

The 14-year-old decided to end her life when things became too unbearable.

This was after she was allegedly pulled out of class – a regular feature by Madam Dodzie—just to punish the pupil.

Giving an account of what happened, an eyewitness said the pupil, after being sacked from class, ran to their residence – a teachers’ bungalow, which is just a stone-throw from the school.

She subsequently untied a rope on the neck of a goat belonging to her grandmother to hang herself on a nearby tree.

But Ms. Ruth, a food vendor at the school’s canteen, upon arriving at the scene, managed to rescue the girl.

“Immediately, we saw her [the victim] speeding up towards the direction of the house.

“So a teacher who was seated under one of the trees on the school campus called her grandmother and asked if she had sent the victim on errands, but she responded in the negative.”

It was at this juncture that Ms. Ruth started calling the victim’s name, but to no avail.

She said she suddenly heard the cry of her niece and rushed there, only to see her hanging on a loose rope on the tree.

The account added quickly: the pupil said “I want to kill myself for Madam Abigail so that she will get what she wants because I don’t know my offence to merit all that she’s making me go through,” the pupil said as narrated by the eyewitness.

The victim’s father subsequently withdrew his daughter from the school—a registered candidate for the 2023 BECE and drove off.

The Akim New Tafo Police Command is currently handling the case following a report filed by the victim’s father on Thursday, April 20.

Meanwhile, the police, in their quest to pick up the teacher at the center of the case for interrogation on Friday, April 21, yielded no results as the headmaster promised to hand her over on Tuesday, April 25.

However, at the time of filing this report, our checks indicated that there was no turnout at the police station on the said day.

Mr. Asamoah Isaac, the headmaster of both the Primary and JHS levels, declined to speak on the matter when contacted by our reporter, Opambour Jaman Dehyee.

He directed the journalist to channel his questions to the Abuakwa North Education Directorate since they are best positioned to comment further on the incident.

The Public Relation Officer (PRO) of the Abuakwa North Education Directorate, Sampson Akoto Kwafo, said on Wednesday, April 26, 2023, that their office had been informed of the matter.

“We were informed yesterday about it; the headteacher and those involved were contacted. They came to the office, and we realized the issue had been reported.

“Father of the girl has reported the matter at the Tafo Police Station, so the matter is in the hands of Inspector Obeng currently,” Angelonline.com.gh reported.

The PRO added: “I can’t say on record that it is a true story, but if you want any better particulars or information, Inspector Obeng can be in the best position to do that.”

4 New Jersey teens charged for bullying 14 year old who later committed suicide

Four New Jersey high school students have been charged in the vicious beatdown of a 14-year-old classmate who died by suicide.

The news arrives several days after Adriana Kuch, 14, was found dead in her Bayville home on Feb. 3, less than 48 hours after video of Kuch getting brutally attacked in the hallway of Central Regional High School was posted on social media.

NBC News reports one juvenile is charged with aggravated assault, two other juveniles are charged with conspiracy to commit aggravated assault and one juvenile is charged with harassment.

The four teens, who have not been identified as they are minors, and their guardians were given a copy of the criminal complaint against them. The students were then released pending future court appearances, Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer confirmed.

Shortly after the charges were handed down, the Central Regional School District announced Saturday that Superintendent Triantafillos Parlapanides had resigned.

“The Central Regional School District board of Education has accepted the resignation of Dr. Triantafillos Parlapanides, and is evaluating all current and past allegations of bullying,” the district wrote in a statement on its website.

“The Central Regional family continues to mourn the loss of one of our children,” the statement continued.

“The District has contacted the Department of Education and will undergo an independent assessment of the District’s anti-bullying policies and ensure every necessary safeguard is in place to protect our students and staff.”

  • Gavin Williamson denies new allegations of bullying

Sir Gavin Williamson has denied new allegations of bullying after an official made a claim.

When Sir Gavin was defence secretary, he allegedly told a senior civil servant to “slit your throat” and “jump out the window.”

Sir Gavin is also being investigated by Parliament’s bullying watchdog for sending expletive-laden messages to former chief whip Wendy Morton.

He has “strongly” rejected allegations of bullying.

An unnamed official told the Guardian Sir Gavin, who is now a Cabinet Office minister in Rishi Sunak’s government, “deliberately demeaned and intimidated” them.

The official said they raised concerns to the Ministry of Defence’s human resources department but made no formal complaint.

Sir Gavin was Defence Secretary between 2017 and 2019 under Theresa May, until he was forced to resign after details of Huawei’s potential involvement in the UK’s 5G network were leaked.

In a statement, Sir Gavin said: “I strongly reject this allegation and have enjoyed good working relationships with the many brilliant officials I have worked with across government.

“No specific allegations have ever been brought to my attention.”

Mr Williamson does not deny using the language.

A government spokesperson said the Cabinet Office, where Mr Williamson now serves as a minister, had “not received notice of any formal complaints about Gavin Williamson’s behaviour from his time at the Ministry of Defence or any other department.”

Labour’s party chair Anneliese Dodds said the allegations were “extremely serious” adding they “speak to the toxic culture at the top of the Conservative Party”.

Sir Gavin reportedly sent a series of abusive WhatsApp messages to Ms Morton accusing the government of excluding certain MPs from the Queen’s funeral service at Westminster Abbey.

Last month, Ms Morton sent the messages to the Conservative Party after making a formal complaint about Sir Gavin’s behaviour.

On Tuesday, she referred Sir Gavin to Parliament’s Independent Complaints and Grievance Scheme. The independent body looks into claims of parliamentarians and staff who feel they have been bullied or harassed.

Gavin Williamson is not a universally popular figure. That’s being polite. Some of his colleagues don’t have much time for him at all.

But he has been a key ally of Rishi Sunak in recent months as the prime minister fought his way into Downing Street.

He was rewarded with a ministerial job and a seat around the cabinet table. It’s not completely clear yet what that job involves, but he’s based in the Cabinet Office with another key Sunak ally, Oliver Dowden.

Mr Sunak appears to be trying to ride this one out at the moment, waiting to see what happens with a complaint made by Wendy Morton.

But Sir Gavin has many critics who dislike his style and think his influence is exaggerated.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has said the language Sir Gavin used was “not acceptable”, but No 10 insisted he still has confidence in him.

In the messages to Ms Morton, published by the Sunday Times, Sir Gavin is said to have warned the former chief whip “not to push him about” and that “there is a price for everything”.

Sir Gavin told the paper: “I of course regret getting frustrated about the way colleagues and I felt we were being treated.”

Asked if it amounted to bullying, Mr Sunak said “an independent complaints process” was under way and it would be “right to let that process conclude”.

The former architectural design firm director, 46, had served as defence secretary under Theresa May and education secretary under Boris Johnson, and was sacked from both roles.

Mr Sunak, who replaced Liz Truss as prime minister last month, brought Sir Gavin back into government as Minister without Portfolio.

Sir Gavin’s current governmental responsibilities are not clear.

Work and Pensions Secretary Mel Stride said Sir Gavin’s role in government was “very important”.

Mr Stride told Times Radio: “I think Gavin is somebody who, as I say, has particular talents and a particular understanding of the parliamentary party.”

The deputy leader of the Liberal Democrats, Daisy Cooper, has said his return raised “yet more serious questions about Rishi Sunak’s judgement”.

“If the prime minister was serious about restoring integrity he would sack Gavin Williamson,” she said.

  • Labour calls for ‘independent investigation’ on Williamson bullying claims

Ed Miliband, the shadow climate secretary, is now speaking to Sophy Ridge on Sunday about bullying allegations in the Conservative Party.

He says there needs to be an “urgent, independent investigation” into what exactly Rishi Sunak knew about the Gavin Williamson bullying claims.

Mr Miliband says: “What did Gavin Williamson do – and what are the implications of that?”

Asked if this behaviour is normal in Westminster, he says: “Let’s be honest, parliament has got a massive job to do to change our culture.

“I’m not denying to you that this might have happened at some point over the last few decades… but they point is, we’ve got to change.”

Mr Miliband says the problem is the Mr Sunak appears to have known Mr Williamson was “engaging in this behaviour”.

“The fact the former chief whip was making a complaint about this suggests how extreme the behaviour was,” he adds.

“It really is a matter of judgement and the basis on which Rishi Sunak makes decisions.”

The conversation now turns to the COP27 climate summit.

“The big picture here… is that the UN has told us that the promises made in Glasgow haven’t been met,” he says.

“It is now cheaper to save the world than to destroy it,” he says, claiming that renewable energy is becoming much cheaper.
