Sleeping fan, empty seats: Burna Boy’s Houston Concert video goes viral

A video from Burna Boy’s recent U.S. tour has gone viral, drawing mixed reactions from fans and social media users.

The clip, captured during his November 22 performance at Houston’s Toyota Center, shows a largely empty arena and a woman asleep in her seat while the Grammy-winning artiste performed.

Although the venue can hold 18,000 people, reports suggest that only about 2,000 tickets were sold, a detail clearly reflected in the footage.

Fans were scattered throughout the arena, while the sleeping attendee appeared completely unfazed by the loud music and Burna Boy’s high-energy performance.

The viral moment quickly sparked jokes online, with many recalling a recent incident where Burna Boy asked a grieving fan to leave one of his shows. Some commenters noted that had the woman been seated closer to the stage, she might have received similar treatment.

The clip has reignited discussions about Burna Boy’s strict approach toward fans, especially as older videos have resurfaced showing him refunding and ejecting attendees he considered discouraging during performances.

In 2023, Wizkid made history with a spectacular performance at London’s Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on July 29.

Playing to a sold-out audience of 45,000 fans, he became the first African artist to achieve this milestone, launching the European leg of his “More Love, Less Ego” tour.

This accomplishment aligns him with icons Beyoncé and The Red Hot Chili Peppers, who also graced the stadium this year.

Following the show, Wizkid added another accolade, becoming the first African artist to receive the BRIT Billion award for amassing 1 billion music streams in the UK.

This event signifies Wizkid’s second record-setting feat in the UK; in 2021, he achieved a remarkable three-date sellout at London’s O2 Arena, solidifying his status as the first African artist to achieve such success.

The Afrobeats genre’s global popularity continues to surge. In 2024, the Grammy Awards will introduce a new category, “Best African Music Performance,” recognizing unique local expressions from across the continent.

Wizkid’s recent accomplishment aligns with a series of historic moments by Afrobeats stars this year, including Burna Boy, who headlined sold-out stadium shows in both the UK and the US, and an impressive NBA All-Star Game halftime performance featuring Burna Boy, Tems, and Rema.

The future holds more excitement as Tiwa Savage, often referred to as the “Queen of Afrobeats,” is set to become the first female artist from the genre to headline at the OVO Arena Wembley in the UK on November 26.

Wizkid has repeatedly demonstrated the global power of Afrobeats, making history with a string of sold-out performances at London’s O2 Arena. In doing so, he reaffirmed his place as one of Africa’s most influential music exports.

The journey began in 2018 when Wizkid headlined a concert at the venue’s 20,000-seat capacity auditorium for the first time. That night, the crowd responded in full, with fans from around the world turning out in high numbers to celebrate his music.

In 2019, he returned for his “Starboy Fest.” Tickets went on sale and reportedly sold out within 10 to 20 minutes after release, an early sign of just how massive his fanbase had become outside Africa.

However, the defining moment came in 2021 under the banner of his “Made in Lagos” tour. Initially, one show at the O2 was announced. Within minutes of ticket sales opening, the show was completely sold out.

Demand surged even higher. Due to the overwhelming interest, Wizkid and his promoters added two additional concert dates. Astonishingly, tickets for both extra shows also vanished almost immediately, a testament to how far his reach had grown. On social media, he confirmed the sell-outs and thanked his London fans for their enormous support.

Across those three nights, Wizkid performed before tens of thousands of fans from different corners of the globe. The triple sell-out was not only a personal achievement but also a milestone for Afrobeats, showing that African artists could draw global audiences equal to top international acts.

Music insiders and critics view this feat as more than just record-setting ticket sales. They see it as a cultural shift. The rapid sell-outs and full arenas prove that music rooted in Africa can command global stages and loyal international audiences. It marks a turning point in how African music is perceived and consumed beyond the continent.

For Wizkid, the O2 achievements reaffirm his trajectory from a rising star to a global phenomenon. Each concert reinforced why he remains a major force in Afrobeats and why global promoters and venues now consider African artists as headline attractions.

At the same time, this success opened doors for other African musicians. As fans and industry stakeholders take notice, the path becomes smoother for upcoming acts hoping to achieve similar international breakthroughs.

While the 2018 show laid the foundation, and the 2019 concert proved demand was real, the 2021 triple sell-out at the O2 Arena cemented Wizkid’s legacy. It showed that his sound and Afrobeats overall deserved global attention.

As of now, Wizkid stands firmly as a pioneer, one of the first African artists to consistently headline and sell out a major London venue multiple times. His journey remains an inspiration, not just for him but for a growing generation of African musicians aiming to conquer global stages.

The story of Wizkid and the O2 Arena is more than a record of ticket sales. It is proof that African music has arrived on the world stage and is here to stay.

Months ago, Burna Boy encouraged aspiring Nigerian musicians to strive for excellence above the excitement of social media attention and local popularity.

In a viral post, he warned that the buzz from Twitter polls and support on social media might seem exciting, but doesn’t necessarily lead to long-term career growth.

He advised Nigerian artists to focus on bigger goals rather than celebrating local chart positions, which may not bring much financial benefit.

He highlighted the difference in earnings from music streams depending on location.

For example, one million streams in Nigeria might only earn an artist about $300 to $400, while in countries like the UK, US, or in Europe, the same number of streams could generate $3,000 to $4,000 or more.

He encouraged artists to aim higher, targeting global markets, or to consider diversifying their careers with other business ventures to secure financial stability alongside their music.

He also mentioned how some people tell him he’s “too free” and question whether he realizes his superstar status. • ‘I bought a house for my mother from my collabo with Burna Boy’ – Tarico

‘I bought a house for my mother from my collabo with Burna Boy’ – Tarico

When Mozambican DJ and super-producer Tarico concocted a particularly lively beat one day, little did he know how drastically it would alter his life and that of his two companions.

Inspired by the sound of coins jangling in a pocket, songwriter and vocalist Nelson Tivane coined the phrase “Yaba Buluku.”

With his gravelly, powerful voice, Preck belted out the lyric, turning it into an instant hit.

“After we concluded the song we went to a rural zone and we put a car with a big sound there, and we connected the song on the car and we saw many people dancing and ask ‘Who is the owner of this song?’ Then we knew this song was going to be big!”Tarico recalls, chuckling.

None other than the African Giant, Burna Boy, realized the strength of Yaba Buluku and jumped on the remix, a move which had a massive impact on Tarico, Tivane and Preck.

“We were travelling all over Africa. Too many big artists were asking us for features. People started to know our faces outside of Mozambique. We became internationals,” says Nelson.

“And money! I bought a car, land, and a house for my mother,” adds Preck.

Now calling themselves Yaba Buluku Boyz, the trio dropped their first album, Donsa, on Friday.

Like the original hit, it is a high-energy, danceable amapiano, and features big African names including Ghana’s dancehall king Shatta Wale, Timaya from Nigeria, and Harmonize from Tanzania.

“Music for us is coming out naturally, it’s an organic thing,” says Tivane,

“When Tarico is done with the beat, he shows the boys and we start to exchange ideas. When we get to the studio, it is magical, we feel the energy. I love all the songs on the album.”

  • Why Shatta Wale is no longer in talking terms with Burna Boy

Why Shatta Wale is no longer in talking terms with Burna Boy

Dancehall King, Charles Nii Armah Mensah Jr. known popularly as Shatta Wale opened up about the breakdown of his once-strong bond with Nigerian Afrobeat sensation Burna Boy, attributing it to a trivial piece of gossip.

Shatta Wale reflected on the early days of their friendship, recounting when he used to host Burna Boy in his home and how their camaraderie led to the creation of the international hit track ‘Hossana.’

The turning point came when Shatta Wale dismissed a crew member who spread rumours to Burna Boy about Shatta’s involvement with his then-girlfriend.

Instead of addressing the issue directly, Burna Boy moved out, and according to Shatta Wale, began tarnishing his image among their mutual acquaintances.

Expressing his initial desire to mend the friendship, Shatta Wale noted a change in Burna Boy’s behaviour towards him.

He revealed, “Burna Boy used to admire my hustle. He even asked me one day if all I had acquired was solely from music creation. After my sacked member gossiped, I expected him to confront me, but he never did. It upset me because he was my very close friend.”

Currently, Shatta Wale described their relationship as nothing more than that of industry rivals, both striving to make their mark on global billboards.

Nigerians ridicule South Africans with Tyla’s ‘Water’ song after AFCON win

A viral video capturing Nigerians celebrating their national football team’s triumph over South Africa in the Africa Cup of Nations(AFCON) has taken social media by storm.

In the footage, jubilant Super Eagles supporters can be seen teasing their rivals by dousing themselves with liquid while chanting along to the popular track “Water” by South African artist Tyla.

The timing of the revelry coincides with Tyla’s recent Grammy win for Best African Music Performance, a victory that has stung some disappointed Nigerians who have vowed retaliation in the upcoming Afcon semi-final match.

Across both nations, the trending hashtag #NGARSA has sparked playful banter as fans exchange light-hearted jibes.

Among the topics of jest, Nigerians have cheekily asserted the superiority of their jollof rice over South Africa’s Bobotie, a traditional spicy mince-meat dish.

Yet, the primary focus of the banter remains on music, with Nigerians championing the distinctiveness of Afrobeats and suggesting that South Africans stick to their signature Amapiano genre—a fusion of hip-hop, soul, and slowed-down house music.

Popular Nigerian pastor Jimmy Odukoya has also joined the jesting by commending Bafana Bafana for their performance despite their defeat, but telling the South African players, “You need water.”

He added, “If it’s any consolation, it’s Grammy water.”

Most South Africans are expected to support the Ivorians as Nigeria faces the hosts in the final on Sunday.

Why Burna Boy invests millions in diamond chains

A touching story reveals the emotional rationale behind the lavish Gameboy diamond chain worn by Nigerian African giant Burna Boy.

This eye-catching piece holds profound significance for the Nigerian Grammy award winner, as it pays tribute to his longtime best friend, Gabriel Sarankuma, affectionately known as Gambo.

Gambo, recognized as the one who first identified Burna Boy’s talent at a young age, played a pivotal role in nurturing and investing in the artist’s flourishing career.

Unfortunately, Gambo’s life was cut short due to a tragic motor accident.

In a touching tribute, Burna Boy has immortalized his best friend by creating a diamond chain bearing Gambo’s name, accompanied by a tattoo engraving on his own body.

This powerful gesture not only reflects Burna Boy’s success but also commemorates the enduring bond and support that defined their friendship.

Burna Boy storms of stage during a performance in Ivory Coast

In the heart of Ivory Coast’s vibrant music scene, Burna Boy, the Afro-fusion sensation, was set to ignite the stage with his electrifying performance.

The crowd gathered in anticipation, ready to groove to the rhythm of his chart-topping hits.

Little did they know, the night would take an unexpected turn, leaving fans and Burna Boy himself frustrated.

The stage was bathed in lights as Burna Boy took centre stage, ready to mesmerise the audience with his signature sound.

The opening beats resonated through the venue, and the energy in the air was palpable.

However, just as the performance was about to begin, an abrupt silence descended upon the venue.

A technical glitch had silenced Burna Boy’s powerful vocals, leaving the audience in disbelief.

The frustration on Burna Boy’s face was evident, as he tried to communicate with the sound technicians to rectify the issue.

The seconds felt like an eternity as the crowd anxiously awaited the return of the music that had brought them together.
Unable to tolerate the interruption any longer, Burna Boy turned to his assistant, his eyes ablaze with frustration.

In a moment of determination, he made a swift decision to leave in the middle of the expectations of the jubilant crowd.

Burna Boy set to ignite Grammy stage

The Recording Academy has revealed that the renowned Nigerian artist, Damini Ebunoluwa Ogulu MFR, known professionally as Burna Boy, is poised to captivate audiences at this year’s Grammy award ceremony.

Scheduled to unfold on February 4th, 2024, at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, the event promises an unforgettable night of musical brilliance.

The ‘African Giant’ will share the spotlight with a constellation of top-tier performers, including Luke Combs, Travis Scott, Billie Eilish, Dua Lipa, and Olivia Rodrigo.

I am richer than all Nigerian artists except Davido – Medikal

Ghanaian rapper Samuel Adu Frimpong, popularly known as Medikal has ignited a social media frenzy by disclosing his financial worth on Twitter, asserting his status as the second wealthiest artist, just behind Davido.

In terms of wealth, the “Omo Ada” hitmaker claims to be second only to Davido.

He claims to have surpassed well-known artists like Burna Boy, Wizkid, Tiwa Savage, and others who have achieved international fame and made millions of dollars through their concerts.

The “Omo Ada” sensation, in a Twitter banter with his followers, confidently declared, “The only Nigerian artist wey hold pass me na Davido I swear,” surpassing renowned figures like Burna Boy, Wizkid, Tiwa Savage, and others with global recognition and substantial earnings from worldwide concerts.

Medikal’s tweet has sparked a wave of reactions from his followers, with many expressing skepticism about the authenticity of his claims.

Video: Watch Burna Boy’s facial expression when he saw this woman

Burna Boy, the acclaimed Nigerian singer and Grammy award-winner, has earned the title ‘the king of memes’ due to a video capturing his surprised reaction to Eniola Badmus’s transformed physique. The singer encountered the actress at a clubhouse, where he was taken aback by her newfound health and attractiveness.

Witnessing Eniola Badmus’s significant weight loss, Burna Boy’s reaction was captured in a video where he stood with his mouth halfway open, seemingly processing the remarkable change. Eniola Badmus had previously shared her journey to shedding excess weight on social media, highlighting her transformation from a plus-size figure.

The actress underwent a gastric bypass surgery in Turkey a few years ago, a procedure aimed at aiding weight loss and improving health for individuals dealing with obesity. Burna Boy, evidently unaware of the actress’s weight loss journey, was genuinely surprised to see her looking elegant and healthier.

The video of Burna Boy’s reaction has sparked amusing comments from internet users, with many finding humor in the singer’s facial expression upon witnessing Eniola Badmus’s stunning transformation.

@tonia.gram_:  After akin and pawpaw, na Burna boy be next for King of Memes. His facial expressions are everything

@bolbelle:  Odogwu no even sabi pretend . The shock on his face was evident!!!

Bayern Munich and English striker Harry Kane has declared Nigerian Afrobeats singer Burna Boy as their preferred African musician.

During a Q&A session with ESPN, the captain of the Three Lions of England singled out the Grammy winner as his favourite artist from Africa.

Kane was asked, “What is the last song that got stuck in your head?” He replied, “You know, ‘Big 7’ from Burna Boy? Yeah, I do like Burna Boy, to be fair. It just popped into my head there.”

On the musician he would like to see live, the former Tottenham striker said, “Maybe someone like Burna Boy or Dave, you know.”

Burna Boy has done nothing to be called The ‘GREAT’– Patrick Doyle

Veteran Nollywood actor Patrick Doyle has criticized Nigerian Grammy-Winning star Damini Ogulu, known as Burna Boy, and argued that he does not deserve to be labeled one of the greatest in music. Doyle made this assertion in a social media post, where he contended that Burna Boy should not be credited for recent achievements in Nigerian music, asserting that the “last last” artist has not achieved enough to be considered great.

He stated, “The recognition for the achievements that seem to be elevating artists like Burna Boy should be appropriately attributed to the legends who paved the challenging paths, making it easier for artists like him to navigate.”

“Burna Boy has not by himself done anything that can be remotely described as great. He and his peers are recipients of the labors of heroes past. They need to be humble and respectful of their diligent and truly pioneering predecessors.

“Great artistes like SunnyAde, Fela Anikulapo, Majek Fashek , I, k. Dairo and a galaxy of others who paved the way from the 60s, to the 2000s. Greatness and great feats don’t exist in a vacuum.

“Let us not contribute to the creation of an arrogant and obnoxious monster.” Patrick Doyle noted.

His words, “90 percent of them (Nigerian musicians) have no real life experiences which is why most of Nigerian music or African music or Afrobeats as people call it, is mostly about nothing, literally nothing.

“There is no substance to it — like, nobody is talking about anything in it. it is just a great time. It’s an amazing time. But at the end of the day, life is not an amazing time. No matter how nice of a time you are having now or you had at some point or you plan to have, you are still going to face life.”
