165 of 245 Ayalolo buses not operational – GAPTE Acting MD

One hundred and sixty-five (165) out of the 245 Ayalolo buses procured by the then Akufo-Addo administration in 2016 are not operational, according to the Acting Managing Director of the Greater Accra Passenger Transport Executive (GAPTE), Awudu Dawuda. Mr Dawuda disclosed on Thursday, January 15, 2026, while speaking to the media.

He noted that “Close to 60 of the buses were packed because they were broken down. What we did was to repair them through our own means to get them back on the road”. According to him, the 80 buses in operation have been distributed across several regions, with 60 assigned to Kumasi, 10 to Takoradi, and another 10 to Tamale.

“When it comes to urban mobility, we are all aware that it is important for the growth of any economy, especially when we are seeking to get more buses into the system. When I took over, we were left with only 80 buses out of the 245 buses that the government procured in 2016. The buses were procured to operate within Accra alone, but 60 were taken to Kumasi, 10 to Takoradi, and another 10 to Tamale at the behest of the then Ministry of Transport,” he explained.

The Aayalolo BRT system was introduced in 2016 with the aim of improving public transport accessibility for the masses at subsidized rates. However, its implementation has faced challenges, including insufficient operational buses and ineffective route management.

In 2023, Vice President of IMANI Africa, Bright Simons, highlighted a concerning issue with Ghana’s Ayalolo Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system. At the time, he alleged that about 70 out of 245 buses with a mere 45 operational. While acknowledging the importance of embracing digital solutions, Mr. Simons emphasized that addressing the current operational issues should take precedence.

In a rebuttal, the then Transport Minister Kwaku Ofori Asiamah clarified that the Aayalolo BRT system in the Greater Accra Metropolitan Area was not meeting expectations set by the World Bank, assuring that the Ministry will collaborate with other key stakeholders to revive the operations of the transport company.

In 2025, Deputy Minister of Transport, Dorcas Affo-Toffey, announced via a social media post that 300 additional ISUZU buses would be delivered to strengthen Metro Mass Transit services.

“On behalf of the Minister for Transport, Hon. Joseph Bukari Nikpe, under whose leadership I serve, I had the privilege of joining the management of Metro Mass Transit in Egypt for the final inspection of three hundred (300) ISUZU buses slated for delivery to Ghana,” Affo-Toffey stated.

She added that, “This important undertaking reflects the Minister’s clear vision and policy direction to strengthen Ghana’s public transport system through strategic investment in modern, reliable, and efficient mass transit.”

She noted that the move will reduce the daily stress faced by workers, students, and traders, help ease traffic congestion, bring down transport expenses, and support a more organised and environmentally friendly transport system.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Police received a major boost in operational capacity, safety, and deterrence with the government’s delivery of 40 new armoured vehicles.

In a handing-over ceremony held at the Ghana Police Headquarters in Accra on Thursday, December 4, President Mahama, in his speech, commended the police for their hard work and efforts in bringing criminals to book, citing their resolve in tackling several cases of murder, armed robberies and other crimes in the country.

He said, “And you have dealt with them, people who robbed banks and attacked people’s residences.
You have chalked up many victories in bringing them to justice. Let me commend the CID, too.

In the past, there were many unsolved murders. I’m happy to note that recently, many of the murders that occurred have been resolved. With good police intelligence, you’ve been able to bring the suspects to book.”

He noted that the 40 armoured vehicles given to the Service are only the first of many his government will hand over to the law enforcement agency, adding that two tow trucks and patrol pickups will also be supplied to police districts.

“These 40 vehicles are just the first batch of what you will be receiving. By the end of this month, you will receive two tow trucks so that anytime any of these vehicles becomes immobilised anywhere, you can pick it up and bring it back to base. You will also get 10 covert operational vehicles, which I have been cautioned not to talk about. It is only you who will know you have them. In addition, we want to give every police district a normal pickup for patrol duties”, the President said.

Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Christian Tetteh Yohunu, in an acceptance speech, assured the president that with vehicles, his outfit will tear down any criminal syndicate and launch a “robust and targeted operation throughout the country”.

“Your Excellency, these vehicles are going to completely change the face and dynamics of police operations. With these vehicles, we are going to launch very bold, robust, and targeted operations throughout the country. We will dismantle any existing criminal networks, most of whom have gone into hiding due to our intensified activities against them”, he noted.

He also sent a warning to individuals threatening national security, declaring that the Police Service will relentlessly pursue and apprehend anyone involved in criminal activities.

“Let me use this opportunity to send a strong word of caution to persons who have decided to threaten the security of this country: we are coming for you. You can run all you want and hide wherever you wish, but we will surely get you,” taunting the police service’s achievements so far under his leadership.

“We have made several breakthroughs. In addition to numerous robbery attempts that have been foiled through sustained intelligence operations, we have successfully arrested suspects who operated under the illusion that they could get away with crime. These include the suspect behind the rural bank robberies, the robbery of the Radiance Filling Station, the robbery at Enfasatia, attacks on mobile vendors, the Wire and Bullet serial murders, vehicle theft syndicates, and perpetrators behind fake online food-delivery platforms”.

IGP, Christian Tetteh Yohunu, also assured that the vehicles would be strategically deployed and properly maintained to achieve their intended objectives, commending the government for its intervention.

“We wish to sincerely express our profound gratitude to the government for thinking about us and prioritising our welfare. Our assurance to you is that the vehicles will be well-maintained and strategically deployed to achieve the intended objectives,” he said.

The event also saw the presence of Interior Minister Muntaka Mubarak and numerous senior police officers, highlighting the government’s commitment to supporting law enforcement agencies.

The Interior Minister, speaking at the commissioning, also mentioned that the enhanced security capacity of security services in ythe country should block all chances of criminal networks from operating and doing so effectively.

“Your time is up. The state is prepared. The police are prepared. The tools are ready. The intelligence is improving. And the public is increasingly vigilant.”

He said that security agencies will deal decisively with those involved in violent and organised crime. “Whether it is armed robbery, banditry, illegal mining, violence, trafficking, kidnapping, gang activities or terrorism, know that we will find you, we will stop you, and you will face the full force of the law” adding that Ghana, being described as a peaceful country, doesn’t mean it is defenceless.

“Ghana is a peaceful nation, but we are not defenceless.”
The Minister explained that the new armoured vehicles would be deployed based on crime data and operational needs. He said the Interior Ministry will work closely with the Police Administration to ensure the vehicles are used effectively.

“Some will support high crime zones, others will reinforce highway patrol, others will be integrated into rapid response teams and special operations. Deployment will be guided by intelligence, operational need and proper chain of command,” he said.

He also highlighted the shift towards a more technology-driven policing model, supported by a new real-time crime centre being developed under the Inspector-General of Police.

“We are moving towards a policing model that is predictive, data-driven and technology-enabled. In this new era, crime will be confronted not only with courage, but with smart intelligence and modern tools.”

U/W: Two critically injured after gunmen attacked bus in Walewale

Gunmen on Tuesday, December 16, opened fire on a bus travelling from Bolgatanga in the Upper East Region to the Ashanti Region’s capital, Kumasi, inflicting serious injuries on the driver and a passenger.

The victims are receiving medical attention at the Walewale Hospital. The bus is reportedly operated by Great Imperial Express and bears the registration number GY 3199-21. The cause of the attack is yet to be known, but it is rumoured to be connected to local disputes in the area.

Meanwhile, police have initiated a probe into the incident to bring the perpetrators to book. The Upper East Region has recorded a number of gun attacks this year. The Binduri District of the region was previously thrown into mourning following a shooting incident that resulted in the death of three individuals and left five others injured.

According to reports, gunmen invaded the residence of the victims on Sunday, October 26, and shot them. Among the three deceased was a five-year-old child who died instantly. The Manager of Binduri-based Maxx Empire Radio and TV, George Bukari, is reported to be among those who sustained injuries in the incident.

The attack has been linked to the long-running Bawku conflict. The conflict, which resurfaced in 2021, has claimed multiple lives and displaced several families. However, the government has initiated efforts to restore calm in the area. In July this year, the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) deployed soldiers to conflict-prone areas, including Bawku, Binduri, Nalerigu, and Zebilla.

This update comes less than a week after four individuals lost their lives in a deadly daylight attack at the district office of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) in the region. The incident also left several others injured. The deceased included a bystander, an NHIA staff member, a mentally unstable man, and Yahaya Bukari, headmaster of Garu D/A Junior High School.

According to eyewitness accounts, the Garu District Office of the NHIA was invaded by four armed men on two motorbikes, who subsequently fired shots indiscriminately. Two of the gunmen are said to have worn masks.

“Around 10 a.m. thereabout, we heard gunshots. Initially, we thought it was coming from the rural bank area, but later we found out that the attackers had gone to the health insurance office,” a witness stated.

Speaking to the media, the former Presiding Member of the Garu District Assembly and current Assembly Member for Kugri, Edward Ndebugri, recounted that the gunmen later targeted bystanders and fleeing residents.

“There is a public school close to the health insurance office, and when the shooting started, the teachers and pupils began running helter-skelter. The gunmen chased them in the direction they fled, and when one of the teachers fell, they shot him dead,” he added.

The assailants reportedly left the NHIA office with nothing. In response, heavily armed police and military personnel thronged key areas, including the District Health Insurance Office and the Presbyterian Hospital, as of 2 p.m. on Monday.

“The whole town is in shock. This is the first time we are witnessing such an incident. People are living in fear, and we are pleading with the security agencies to investigate and bring the perpetrators to justice,” the Assembly Member for Kugri appealed.

The injured are receiving treatment for gunshot wounds at the Garu Presbyterian Hospital. Meanwhile, police have launched investigations to determine the motive behind the attack.

Earlier this month, an armed attack at the Gbintri inland checkpoint in the East Mamprusi Municipality of the North East Region reportedly left an Assistant Immigration Control Officer II (AICOII), Rafiq Mohammed, dead, while another officer, AICOII Oppong Daniel, sustained injuries.

While details of the attack remain unclear, reports suggest it occurred at about 1:30 a.m. on Friday, October 3. AK-47 shell casings used by the attackers were retrieved by a joint response team led by Superintendent Francis Brobbey, Gambaga Municipal Police Commander, and DIS Moro Tanko Mohammed, North Regional Intelligence Officer of the Ghana Immigration Service.

Meanwhile, AICOII Oppong Daniel is receiving treatment at the Baptist Medical Centre in Nalerigu after sustaining multiple gunshot wounds.

In July this year, the lifeless body of an immigration officer identified as Stephen King Amoah, also known as Nana Kofi, was discovered in a drainage system near GBC Satellite, opposite Comet Estate, Accra.

The deceased had reportedly gone missing for five days before his death. This was contained in a press statement issued by the Ghana Police Service on Thursday, July 10. Police disclosed that the perpetrators also set the body of the 38-year-old on fire.

The remains were conveyed to the Police Hospital morgue after relatives positively identified the body.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the deceased had gone to meet his debtor, Bright Aweh, who had promised to settle an outstanding debt on Thursday, July 3. However, he never returned home, and his phone remained switched off, raising concerns among family members.

“Investigations revealed that on 3rd July 2025, at about 8:00 p.m., the deceased left his residence at Ashongman Estate after receiving WhatsApp images of cash bundles from one Bright Aweh, who requested to meet him at a spot at Ashongman Estate to settle an outstanding amount.

“According to the complainant, the deceased never returned home that night, and his phone remained switched off thereafter,” the police said.

Bright Aweh was arrested to assist with investigations. He admitted meeting the deceased and claimed he handed over GHS500,000, instructing him “to use part of the money to pay off some debts and hold the remaining amount for later collection.”

However, police noted that “the suspect could not clearly explain the source of the funds and gave conflicting statements.”

Subsequently, police announced the arrest of the prime suspect in the murder on August 4. During a press briefing, the Director-General of the CID, COP Lydia Yaako Donkor, disclosed that bloodstains were found at the suspect’s residence, including on a burnt carpet and a fufu pestle believed to have been used in the murder.

“The Ghana Police Service wishes to assure the public that investigations are ongoing and every effort is being made to ensure that all perpetrators are prosecuted,” she added.

  • Immediate reduction in fares not possible – Transport Minister

Immediate reduction in fares not possible – Transport Minister

Transport Minister Joseph Bukari Nikpe has calmed growing public expectations for fare reductions, stating that transport fares will not be adjusted immediately despite recent drops in fuel prices.

His comments follow renewed calls from commuters for relief at the pumps to reflect in fares—especially in light of past fare increases triggered by fuel hikes.

Addressing the issue, Mr. Nikpe explained that fare adjustments are not made arbitrarily but follow a structured process agreed upon with transport unions and operators.

“I am in constant touch with the unions and transport operators. We have a formula in which we use to either increase or reduce prices, and we have not gotten there yet,” he said.

The Minister stressed that collaboration with transport unions remains strong, and any changes will be based on data and consensus rather than pressure.

“We are in good touch. We are working together, and Ghanaians should be rest assured that prices will be kept for some time before any of the adjustments will be made,” Mr. Nikpe added.

While the Ministry continues discussions on a possible review, officials say the goal is to ensure a fair balance between affordability for passengers and sustainability for operators.

  • Ghana’s first fleet of electric buses rolled out

Ghana’s first fleet of electric buses rolled out

On Wednesday, November 27,Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia inaugurated Ghana’s first fleet of electric buses (EVs).

This initiative stems from Dr. Bawumia’s intentions for reducing transport fares by approximately 40%, aiding commuters nationwide.

The country’s public transportation sector has experienced high fuel costs, inadequate infrastructure, and frequent breakdowns.

The Managing Director of the Metro Mass Transit Limited (MTTL), Albert Adu Boahen, who was speaking at the inauguration, disclosed that his outfit has put in place measures to ensure the electric buses remain in good working condition.

According to him, MTTD stations across the capital will feature auxiliary facilities that to assist in charging the buses.

He noted that the buses would be deployed to provide transportation services along specific routes in Ghana. These routes include, Ashaiman-Accra, Oyibi-Accra and Accra-Amasaman roads.

“This represents a remarkable 40% savings in operational costs, allowing us to reinvest in expanding and enhancing our services. Part of this cost reduction will also be passed on to the public through more affordable fares and reliable service.

“Additionally, electric buses provide a smoother and quieter ride, improving the overall passenger experience. The board and management are aware of the paradigm shift in passenger preference in the emerging segmented market in the road transport industry.

“We know that is our mandate as a company to ensure that the needed system, operational structures and resources are in place for the effective management of these buses,” he stated.

  • Transport fares to increase by 30% starting March 7

Transport fares to increase by 30% starting March 7

The Transport Operators Union and the Concerned Drivers Association of Ghana have jointly declared a 30 percent hike in transport fares, effective March 7, 2024, citing the government’s failure to address their grievances.

In a collective statement, the associations expressed disappointment in leadership for neglecting concerns and failing to implement fare adjustments to offset rising operational costs, particularly due to continuous fuel price increases.

“As drivers’ associations, we expressed disappointment in the leadership for failing to address the concerns and implement fare adjustments to counterbalance the increased operational costs.

The full statement from the Regional Chairmen of both unions highlights their disappointment in leadership’s lack of proactive measures to align fares with market conditions amid escalating fuel costs.

The unions emphasized the necessity of fare adjustments to sustain their businesses and maintain service quality.

They called on the government and relevant authorities to engage in constructive dialogue with leaders to address sector challenges and implement fare adjustments reflecting economic realities.

If concerns remain unaddressed by March 6, 2024, the unions warn of an inevitable fare increase as a means of coping with the escalating operational costs.

    Below is the full statement.

Regional Chairmen of both the Transport Operators Union and the Concerned Drivers Association of Ghana are announcing our intention to consider a fare increment in response to the recent hike in fuel prices across the country.

As drivers’ associations, we expressed disappointment in the leadership for failing to address the concerns and implement fare adjustments to counterbalance the increased operational costs.

The continuous rise in fuel prices has had a significant impact on our livelihoods, leading to financial strains and hardships in maintaining our operations.

We would like to express our disappointment in our leadership, Despite the escalating costs of fuel, our leadership has not taken proactive measures to increase fares in line with market conditions.

This has prompted us Regional executives to consider fare adjustments as a necessary step to sustain our businesses.

The fare adjustments are essential to ensure the financial viability of the transportation sector and to maintain the quality of service provided to the public. The failure of the government to address this critical issue has left us with no choice but to consider fare increments as a means of coping with the escalating operational costs.

We are calling on the government and relevant authorities to engage in constructive dialogue with our leaders to address the challenges faced by our sector and to implement fare adjustments that reflect the current economic realities.

Failure to address these concerns by 6th March 2024 will leave us with no choice but to increase fares.

  • “Bawumia’s Tap-and-Go bus monitoring system exposes Ghanaians to cyber fraud attacks – Software engineer

“Bawumia’s Tap-and-Go bus monitoring system exposes Ghanaians to cyber fraud attacks – Software engineer

The Tap and Go Transport Service, which allows passengers to conveniently pay for their fares using a reloadable card, which can be tapped on designated devices installed on buses or rails, has proven to be a medium that makes Ghanaian commuters susceptible to Cyber fraud attacks.

Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, launched the Tap and Go Transport Service in Accra on Monday, February 19, at the Head Office of Metro Mass Limited.

Dr. Bawumia highlighted that the new Tap and Go digital system is not confined to intra-city transport like Aayalolo. Instead, it is expansive and designed to support various public transport services. This includes parcel deliveries and tracking, taxi hailing, inter-city bus services, as well as inner-city bus services such as Metro Mass and Aayalolo.

Following this, Yayra Koku, reportedly affiliated with the National Democratic Congress (NDC), voiced apprehensions suggesting potential privacy risks for commuters utilizing the service.

Another X user, Edward Adjei, a Software Engineer & Site Reliability Engineer took it upon himself to expose the vulnerability of the newly launched system.

He managed to gain access to 1,079 user logins and details with different role levels, and he also accessed panels (three different websites for this project) and some video recording from the monitoring software’s server.

He managed to also get access to the financial details of these users, including their bank accounts, code, mobile money among others.

According to Mr Adjei, his sole purpose is to lay bare the flaws of the systems and how several citizens risk being defrauded or having their bank accounts hacked.

“Web server is pretty old and could crash with certain specially crafted payload sent to it. Can easily deny services for all services. Here’s one of the issues. It’s a high vulnerability. Fix now,” he added.

Mr Adjei noted that after gaining access to the server, he got access to a lot of other Asian recordings, compelling him to find out if the Tap and Go Transport Service is made solely for Ghana.

The flaws in the Tap-and-Go bus monitoring system contravene the general data protection regulation (GDPR), which is the strongest privacy and security law in the world.

    The GDPR defines:

    • individuals’ fundamental rights in the digital age
    • the obligations of those processing data
    • methods for ensuring compliance
    • sanctions for those in breach of the rules

    Obligations for businesses and organisations

The GDPR establishes the general obligations of data controllers and of those processing personal data on their behalf (processors).

These include the obligation to implement appropriate security measures, according to the risk involved in the data processing operations they perform.

Controllers are also required in certain cases to provide notification of personal data breaches. All public authorities and those companies that perform certain risky data processing operations will also need to appoint a data protection officer.

Individuals can lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority and have the right to judicial remedy and compensation. They have the right to have a decision by their data protection authority reviewed by their national court, irrespective of the member state in which the data controller concerned is established.

Severe sanctions are provided for against controllers or processors who violate data protection rules. Data controllers can face fines of up to €20 million or 4% of their global annual turnover, according to the EU.

Video: Trotro driver and ‘mate’ preach to passengers in bus

A trotro driver and his conductor have taken on a dual role as part-time preachers, delivering spiritual messages to passengers during their daily commutes.

This unconventional approach has ignited a range of reactions and discussions online.

The duo, whose identities are yet to be revealed, have turned their trotro into a moving pulpit, sharing words of inspiration, encouragement, and religious teachings with commuters as they navigate through the bustling city.

  • “Trotro mates” furious with Bawumia for identifying as one to ‘escape’ public scrutiny over economic crisis

“Trotro mates” furious with Bawumia for identifying as one to ‘escape’ public scrutiny over economic crisis

Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s recent analogy involving drivers’ mates has stirred discontent among some in the profession, leading to preparations for a substantial demonstration.

Reports indicate that these drivers’ mates are displeased with Dr. Bawumia’s use of their role as an example.

Alhaji Amadu Bukari Sorogho, former Member of Parliament for Madina, disclosed this on Adom FM’s morning show, Dwaso Nsem, on Monday.

According to Sorogho, these drivers’ mates are planning a protest to distance themselves from Dr. Bawumia, who also serves as the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

The drivers’ mates feel that Dr. Bawumia’s analogy is damaging their reputation, prompting them to take action.

Despite their anger, Sorogho urged them to remain calm.

“Are you aware that mates in the country are angry at Bawumia and want to protest because he used them to set an example? They claim he is destroying their names but we are pleading with them to calm down” the NDC man asserted.

“A typical mate doesn’t qualify to drive even if your master travels for years but Bawumia acts as a President anytime Akufo-Addo is out of the country and so you see the confusion he has brought” he quizzed.

Furthermore, Alhaji Sorogho argued that if the Vice President considers himself a mate, then he is not qualified to be a driver.

He pointed out that a typical conductor does not meet the qualifications to drive, questioning Dr. Bawumia’s role as an acting president whenever President Akufo-Addo is out of the country, suggesting it has led to confusion.

  • 21 individuals dead after Venice tourist bus fell from a bridge

Tragedy struck as an electric bus crashed off a flyover near Venice, claiming the lives of at least 21 individuals, including several children, according to officials.

The bus, which broke through a barrier, plummeted nearly 15 meters (50 feet) close to railway tracks in Mestre, a district linked to Venice by a bridge.

Among the deceased were five Ukrainians, one German, and the Italian bus driver, as confirmed by city prefect Michele Di Bari.

Venice Mayor Luigi Brugnaro said a “huge tragedy” had taken place.

“An apocalyptic scene, there are no words,” he said on social media.

On Tuesday night, CCTV footage from the flyover showed the vehicle travelling past another bus before collapsing off the carriageway.

One rescuer spoke of a “tragedy of young people, if not very young people, except for a few adults”.

Three children, including an infant, were among the casualties, according to reports from emergency services and the interior Minister, Matteo Piantedosi expressed concern that the death toll could potentially increase.

Fifteen individuals have suffered injuries, with five of them in critical condition, according to reports.

Authorities in Venice indicated that the injured parties included tourists from various countries, including Ukrainians, Austrians, Spaniards, and others.

Among the wounded, there were two 16-year-olds and two younger children, as stated by the local governor. In addition, two German siblings, aged seven and 13, were undergoing treatment for broken bones at a hospital in nearby Treviso.

Tragically, their parents lost their lives in the accident, and the boys were receiving counseling.

The ill-fated bus, carrying a total of 39 passengers, was involved in the crash at approximately 19:45 (17:45 GMT) on Tuesday.

It had been rented by a local company, seemingly to transport tourists from Venice’s historic center to a campsite located in the nearby Marghera district.

The bus company underscored that the 13-ton vehicle operated solely on electricity, refuting prior claims that it was powered by methane gas as well.

Mauro Longo, the fire brigade commander, informed Il Gazzettino’s website that the bus’s batteries ignited, complicating the process of clearing the bus.

Eyewitnesses reported hearing people’s screams, but the flames were too intense for them to offer assistance.

Bus crash in Northern Senegal kills 23

A tragic bus crash in northern Senegal has claimed the lives of at least 23 people, leaving more than 50 others injured.

The incident occurred when the bus overturned in the village of Ngeune Sarre in the Louga region. The cause of the accident remains unclear.

Following the accident, Senegal’s President Macky Sall took to Twitter to call for increased caution on the roads.

In response to the recurring accidents in the area, Interior Minister Antoine Diome is scheduled to visit the scene.

In January, a collision in the same area resulted in the deaths of 19 people, leading to criticism of the government’s handling of road safety.

In an effort to address road safety concerns, the authorities implemented measures, including a ban on overnight bus journeys.

  • We don’t even have capacity for rail line how much more sky train? – Expert quizzes

We don’t even have capacity for rail line how much more sky train? – Expert quizzes

A Transport Expert, Rev Dr. Charles Adam, has expressed his concern over Ghana’s inadequate capacity to construct and maintain transport systems.

He pointed out that the country lacks the necessary infrastructure to build and effectively manage sky trains, citing previous failures in managing railway systems as a fundamental issue.

Recently, discussions surrounding Ghana’s sky train gained prominence when the Minority in parliament initiated investigations into the US$2 million Sky train project.

“What we need is a workable transport master plan for the urban area of Accra. We tried to do that when we wanted to do the Bus Rapid System (BRS) but everything we planned we couldn’t do it. So, we probably have to go back to the drawing table and find out, why we couldn’t do it,” he was quoted by 3news.com.

According to Rev Adam, Ghana has refused to learn the right approach to enhancing these new technologies in order to successfully launch them.

He added that until the country is able to work on its railway system, a higher infrastructure will be difficult to implement.

“Why is it that Nigeria built its bus rapid system, and now it is building a rail network? It is because it has learned how to do it right. We haven’t even learned to build the first one and we are thinking of jumping to a higher infrastructure or a higher system that probably may be a little more complicated. We don’t have any public transport authority, even the institutional capacity does not exist, and the capacity to maintain a rail network today doesn’t exist, what we know about rail networks is based on old technology.

“We have built a lot of rail lines but we don’t have trains running. So if you ask me whether we have the capacity to even maintain rail service, I doubt it and that is the kind of problem that Ethiopia is also facing, they built nice beautiful systems because it was promised and was delivered but they don’t have the capacity to maintain it,” he said.

    8 injured in a head-on collision at Kasoa-Mallam highway

Eight including a Senior High School (SHS) student, have sustained injuries after two buses collided on the Kasoa-Malam highway on Wednesday morning, July 5.

According to eyewitnesses, the driver of the sprinter bus (with registration number GR 6669-13) lost control of the steering wheel when another vehicle merged into the lane, leading to the bus spinning and crashing.

Passersby came to the aid of the injured passengers and rescued them from the accident site. They were swiftly transported to nearby healthcare facilities for immediate medical attention.

During the police investigation at the scene, it was uncovered that the driver responsible for the accident lacked the necessary license to operate the vehicle. Instead of holding a class C license as required, the driver possessed only a class B license.

“I was travelling to Madina but on our way our driver was careless. Another car switched lanes and I don’t know what happened and all of a sudden the vehicle somersaulted. It wasn’t any serious thing but the driver as a result of his inexperience caused the vehicle to fall,” Akwesi Acquah a passenger said.

“I thank God that I am alive because what happened was serious. A lot of people sustained severe injuries and have been rushed to the hospital”.

Subsequently, the driver of the passenger car was apprehended and taken to the police station, and the vehicle was towed away from the accident scene.

Tanzania removes decades-long ban on nighttime bus travel

In the aftermath of several decades, Tanzania has decided to lift the long-standing ban on night-time upcountry bus travel.

The government’s decision took into account input from stakeholders in the transport sector, as well as improvements in infrastructure and security.

During the announcement in parliament, Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa stated that the ban had been implemented in the 1990s due to an increase in road accidents and incidents of bus hijackings.

He has now directed the relevant authorities to work to “establish a procedure to be followed by the owners and drivers of passenger buses who intend to transport passengers at night”.

The association of Tanzanian bus owners has welcomed the lifting of the ban, recognizing its potential to stimulate growth in the transport sector.

The management of the school made the clarion call during the school’s 60th anniversary celebration.

Headmaster Franklin Amesimeku stressed the urgency of taking action to tackle the numerous challenges facing the school.

Currently accommodating around 3,369 students, the lack of a functional bus for transporting students to programs and other locations was highlighted as a hindrance to their academic progress.

Mr. Amesimeku further highlighted the difficulties faced in administrative work due to the absence of school pick-up vehicles, exacerbated by the poor condition of the existing vehicle.

The appeal made by the school authorities highlights the critical need for infrastructure improvements to support the effective functioning and development of Hohoe Evangelical Presbyterian Senior High School.

He noted that having good vehicles will help provide more effective school administration.

Regarding dormitories, Mr. Amesimeku noted that it is evident that the inadequacy of facilities directly affects academic performance.

He further noted that accommodating over 3,200 students in dormitories meant for less than a thousand students is not only dehumanizing but also portrays management and stakeholders as indifferent to students.

“It is in light of this inexpressible condition that we, as an institution, have high expectations of receiving help from every possible source to address this significant infrastructure deficit,” he noted.

“In light of the implementation of free SHS, students from all regions of the country are placed in the school, leaving us with no choice but to admit them. This has overwhelmed the existing accommodation facilities, resulting in severe congestion,” he added.

Mr. Franklin Amesimeku also lamented the stalled GetFund two-story administration block project located just opposite the current administration block, which has been left at the mercy of the weather.

He mentioned that the project began in 2020 but has been abandoned, making administrative work difficult.

“This structure is deteriorating as work has been stalled for over three years now, and considering the amount of funds already invested in that project, we cannot afford to let it decay. Therefore, we are calling on GetFund to promptly complete this building for the growth of the school,” he emphasized.

Regarding security, he noted that the school is always gripped with fear due to the fact that there are only two security personnel on campus.

Thus, he urged the hiring of additional security personnel for the school. However, he commended the government, the Ministry of Education, and the Member of Parliament for the area, John Peter Amewu, for their continuous support to the school.

The school Prefect, Attara Kwesi Prosper, in his speech, highlighted that the prefectorial board, in collaboration with the teachers, ensures an effective prep system to help students excel in their examinations.

Master Attara Kwesi Prosper also expressed concern about the lack of sufficient water storage facilities such as poly tanks and reservoirs, making it difficult for students to arrive at school on time.

The 60th anniversary of EP Senior High School (HEPSS) was celebrated under the theme “HEPSS@60: Reflecting on Our Journey and Inspiring New Directions: The Role of Stakeholders.”

The occasion was graced by Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and Minister of Railways John Peter Amewu, among many other dignitaries.
