You were a faithful servant – Akufo-Addo mourns deceased driver in convoy crash

President Akufo-Addo has conveyed his condolences following the demise of Kwesi Atta, a presidential driver, who tragically lost his life in a convoy accident at Bunso Junction in the Eastern Region.

He remembered the late Atta as a dedicated employee who stood by him through thick and thin, expressing deep sadness over the unexpected loss.

Additionally, the president wished a swift recovery for the other individuals injured in the accident, expressing optimism for their speedy recuperation to resume their duties and provide for their families.

During the swearing-in ceremony of the 24 new ministers and deputy ministers at the Jubilee House, President Akufo-Addo called for a moment of silence in honor of Kwesi Atta, acknowledging his faithful service and offering prayers for his peaceful rest.

“I would, with your indulgence, ask you to be upstanding, to join me in a minute’s silence. In memory of an employee – a faithful employee, Kwesi Atta, who died tragically in an unnecessary accident this week in the line of duty, I wish the other three affected persons speedy recoveries.

“May the soul of Kwesi Atta rest and abide peacefully in the bosom of the Almighty until the last day of the resurrection, when we shall all meet again,” he said.

The incident occurred as President Akufo-Addo’s convoy, returning from the funeral of former Ejisu MP John Kumah, was involved in a collision at Bunso Junction. It was reported that a KIA truck entered the path of the convoy, resulting in the accident.

While the president was not present during the collision, subsequent reports revealed that two military officers associated with the presidency and injured in the crash had been airlifted to Accra for advanced medical treatment.

On May 19, 2024, the presidency officially confirmed the accident and the identity of the deceased driver through an official statement.

  • At least 37 dead in Nigerian bus crash

At least 37 people were killed Tuesday in a multi-bus crash in northeastern Nigeria, authorities said.

The accident occurred near the city of Maiduguri when two commercial buses collided head-on and burst into flames.

A third bus then crashed into them, Utten Boyi, head of the road safety agency for Borno state, said in a statement.

“Thirty-seven people have been confirmed dead, most of them burnt beyond recognition,” Boyi said.

A burst tire on the first bus, coupled with “excessive speed,” according to the official, was the cause of the tragedy.

Road accidents are common in Nigeria, where road conditions have deteriorated in recent weeks following heavy rains and flooding, the worst in a decade in the country.

Earlier Tuesday, 17 people were killed and four injured when their bus crashed into a truck near Abuja, Nigeria’s capital, local media reported.

On Saturday, nine people drowned when their overloaded vehicle plunged into a dam after a tire burst near the northern city of Kano, local officials said.

  • One dead after Canadian Snowbirds jet crashes into home

At least one person has died after an aerobatic Canadian air force jet crashed into a residential neighbourhood.

Another crew member was injured when the plane hit a house in the city of Kamloops, British Columbia.

One pilot was able to eject before the crash on Sunday, video showed.

The Snowbirds jet had been on a tour “to salute Canadians doing their part to fight the spread of Covid-19”, according to the team’s website.

The Snowbirds perform aerobatic stunts for the public, similar to Red Arrows in the UK or the US Blue Angels.

The crash happened on Sunday morning, shortly after the jet took off.

“It is with heavy hearts that we announce that one member of the CF Snowbirds team has died and one has sustained serious injuries,” the Royal Canadian Air Force said in a tweet.

The Air Force later said that the crew member’s injuries were not thought to be life threatening.

Video posted on Twitter showed two jets climbing into the air from what is believed to be the Kamloops Airport before one catches on fire.

Witness Annette Schonewille told CBC News: “The one plane continued and the other one, there was two puffs, it looked like puffs of smoke and one… was a ball of fire,” she said.

“No noise, it was strange, and then the plane just did a cartwheel and fell right out of the sky. Just boom, straight down, and then a burst of black, black smoke.”

After it hit the front garden of a home in Kamloops, residents ran outside in an attempt to put out the fire.

“I just started running down the street. And I got there maybe a minute after it crashed and there was a couple of residents that had their hoses out and they were trying to put the flames out because it hit a house,” neighbour Kenny Hinds told the Associated Press.

“It looked like most of it landed in the front yard, but maybe a wing or something went through the roof.”

Meanwhile, resident Nolyn McLeod told CBC he saw the plane curve into the street and hit the bedroom window of his neighbour’s house.

Photos published in Canadian media appeared to show a parachute on the roof of the house.

The city of Kamloops is around 200 miles (320km) northeast of Vancouver in the West Coast Canadian province. It has a population of 90,000.

In October, a Snowbirds jet crashed into an uninhabited area before an air show in the US city of Atlanta, after the pilot ejected.

  • Horror crash mars end of Daytona 500

Denny Hamlin sealed back-to-back victories in an incident-packed Daytona 500 on Monday, winning a photo finish in a race marred by a horrific crash that left veteran driver Ryan Newman hospitalized.

Joe Gibbs Racing driver Hamlin followed up his victory in 2019 with his third career win at Daytona, becoming the first racer to win the opening leg of the NASCAR season since Sterling Marlin in 1995.

However, Hamlin’s celebrations were muted by a last-lap crash that left Roush Fenway Racing’s Newman in hospital.

The 42-year-old Newman’s Ford Mustang had led on the final lap but spun out of control, hit the wall and flipped onto its roof before bursting into flames at the Daytona International Speedway.

There was no immediate word on Newman’s condition, but several ambulances were brought on the track to attend to the driver as the race finished.

Black screens were erected around the site of Newman’s crashed car as workers tended to the scene.
