Security guard shot outside Drake’s Toronto mansion amidst ongoing feud with Kendrick Lamar

Toronto police reported that a security guard was shot outside Canadian rapper Drake’s Park Lane Circle mansion early Tuesday morning.

Suspects in a vehicle fired at the guard around 02:00 EDT (06:00 GMT) before fleeing.

It’s uncertain if Drake was home or targeted.

Inspector Paul Krawczyk mentioned ongoing cooperation with Drake’s team and withheld details due to video quality.

The victim is hospitalized in serious condition.

Mayor Olivia Chow condemned the violence, urging law enforcement to apprehend the perpetrators.

The incident occurs amidst a heated feud between Drake and Kendrick Lamar, marked by “diss tracks.”

Lamar’s latest song’s cover art references Drake’s mansion, alleging sensitive issues.

    Drake’s response denies these claims.

Police investigations continue as the music world watches this unfolding drama.

  • Ghanaian man receives $50,000 and job after assisting disguised ‘beggar’ in Canada

Ghanaian man receives $50,000 and job after assisting disguised ‘beggar’ in Canada

Ghanaian man’s act of kindness in Canada has led to a remarkable turn of events as he received $50,000 and a job offer after assisting a disguised ‘beggar’.

The narrative unfolds when a well-known figure on social media, known for engaging in social experiments, approaches Richard feigning hunger and asks if he has anything to spare for a meal.

Without hesitation, Richard offers him a pack of cookies from his bag, followed by his last Canadian $20 from his wallet. Undeterred by Zachery’s refusal to accept, Richard insists on helping.

“Cookies? Is that ok for you?” Richard said as he handed over the pack to him.

“No, that’s yours, though? Zachery responded, but Richard insisted, “No, it’s fine.”

Subsequently, Richard goes the extra mile by purchasing a sandwich and a beverage for Zachery, demonstrating his genuine compassion.

When Zachery questions Richard’s generosity, Richard humbly responds that one doesn’t need to know someone to extend kindness.

“You don’t even know me though?” Zachery said.

“You don’t have to know someone before you do the person good,” Richard added.

The following is a question-and-answer moment between the two, starting with Zachery.

    “What’s your dream?”

“I want to be able to take care of my family?”

    “Where’s home?”

“I’m from Ghana. My dad, he needs me. He has one of his legs amputated”

“How much does it cost to fly back home?”

“$3000. I’m owing my landlord 2 months rent. Getting a job here is not easy.”

After this moment, Zachery tried to hand over the $20 to Richard, as he prepared to tell him the real truth: the truth the he was not a needy person, but the Ghanaian man refused.

“I did it from my heart. It’s the little I can do. You don’t do good and get something in return. You just have to do it?” Richard said.

    “Are you here by yourself?”

“I came with my wife. We didn’t know she was pregnant. When we went to the hospital, it was an ectopic pregnancy… she lost the baby. It was confirmed that it was an ectopic pregnancy.”

“Since you helped me, I actually have $3000 for you to fly home to Ghana… from the bottom of my heart,” Zachery said.

Their exchange evolves into a poignant dialogue about dreams, family, and hardship, with Richard expressing his desire to support his family back in Ghana despite facing financial struggles in Canada.

Moved by Richard’s sincerity, Zachery surprised him with $3000 to facilitate his journey home and secures him a job opportunity.

In a heartwarming twist, Zachery revealed an additional surprise: $50,000 raised through a GoFundMe campaign initiated for Richard’s benefit.

“I got one more surprise for you,” Zachery told Richard, after which he walked him to a shop where instantly, he was offered a job.

“I heard that you’re a hard worker and you want to work hard for your family. I think you’re going to be part of our family,” Ayad, the owner of the store is heard saying.

And then, in a follow-up video, Zachery returned to give Richard, the Ghanaian, a much bigger surprise. Read their conversation below:

“You know how I gave you the $3000 bucks yesterday?… how much is your rent?”

    “$800 a month”

“And then how much is your school?”

“It will be around $50,000… through you, I have a job now and I can save now and start paying on my own…”

“I actually had one more surprise for you too,” Zachery said as he poured out the contents of a white bag onto the table: $50,000 in total from a GoFundMe that he has created for Richard the day before.

This generous act not only alleviates Richard’s financial burdens but also provides hope for a brighter future.

The narrative concluded with Zachery meeting Richard’s wife, who shares her grief over the loss of their unborn child.

Africa remains poor due to exploitation of its natural resources – Lands Minister laments

Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Samuel Abu Jinapor, urged Canadian investors to explore the vast potential in Ghana’s mining sector.

Describing it as the backbone of Africa’s economy, he emphasised that Ghana’s mining contributed significantly to government revenue and GDP.

Minister Jinapor highlighted Africa’s abundance, possessing 30% of the world’s mineral reserves, including crucial green and emerging metals.

Emphasising that the future of global mining lies in Africa, he reaffirmed the continent’s commitment to the Africa Mining Vision, aiming for optimal and sustainable mineral resource exploitation for the benefit of its people.

Expressing concern over Africa’s underdevelopment despite its rich resources, Minister Jinapor cited the 2023 Multidimensional Poverty Index report, revealing that nearly half of the world’s 1.1 billion poor people reside in sub-Saharan Africa.

“Regrettably, over the years, the exploitation of these resources has not optimally benefited the African peoples. According to the 2023 Multidimensional Poverty Index report, nearly half of the world’s 1.1 billion poor people live in sub saharan Africa and using the international monetary funds GDP per capita income 25 out of the 30 poorest countries in the world are in Africa, including countries with large reserves of natural resources,” Samuel Abu Jinapor stated.

He made this statement during Toronto’s Canada-Africa Chamber of Business-hosted 25th annual Africa Mining Breakfast and 22nd annual Investing in Africa Mining Seminar on March 5, 2024.

He urged a more equitable distribution of mining benefits, emphasising the need for Africa to break free from poverty.

Highlighting the potential of the Africa Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) headquartered in Accra, Ghana, Minister Jinapor outlined a massive market of over 1.2 billion people for trade and investment.

Additionally, he underscored Africa’s crucial role in the global transition to green energy, leveraging its abundant mineral resources.

Expressing optimism, Minister Jinapor hoped that the seminar would foster stronger ties between Africa and Canada, encouraging increased collaboration with Ghana and other African nations in the flourishing mining sector.

57 out of 100 Canadian adults not okay with transgenders – Research

A recent survey by Nanos Research and CTV News found that most Canadian adults feel uneasy about transgender policies in sports, hormone treatments for young people, and changes to students’ pronouns in schools.

A study was carried out in between February 28 and March 2 of this year, a study asked a group of random Canadians who are 18 years old or older about how they feel about different issues related to gender identity and inclusion. The findings show that many people are not in favor of certain policies that have become important topics in Canadian politics.

About 57 out of 100 adults said they were not okay with a transgender person playing sports or using the washroom and change rooms of their current gender identity. And 44 out of 100 said they felt the same about using the washroom and change rooms.

In late February, the Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre said that places for women should only be for women, not for men who were born as men. This caused criticism from a transgender person who used to be a Conservative candidate, Hannah Hodson, who said it was very sad to see.

“He just made it seem like trans people are predators,” she told Vassy Kapelos in an interview with CTV News Channel’s Power Play.

    Hormone therapy

People who answered last week’s survey were also asked about rules for children’s gender identity.

Sixty-two out of every hundred people in the survey were not happy about letting Canadians under 18 get hormone treatments to change their gender.

The Conservative federal government wants to stop children from getting treatments to change their gender. They voted on this in September.

Also, when it comes to children, 64% of people said they would feel uneasy if a student under 18 decided to change their name or pronouns at school without their parents knowing.

Last year, the government of Saskatchewan made a new rule called the Parents’ Bill of Rights. It says that parents have to agree before their child’s name or pronouns can be changed in school if the child is under 16 years old.

Shortly after the bill was introduced in August, it was challenged in court by a 2SLGBTQ+ group called UR Pride based in Regina.

The government used a special rule to make a law, and there might be a big fight about it in the highest court.

In February, Egale Canada, a national group for LGBTQ+ people, said that the law made by the government of Saskatchewan is hurting gender diverse young people and causing lasting damage.

“We are thankful that we can keep fighting against it. ”

    Methodology

The information in this article came from a survey ordered by CTV News and done by Nanos Research. The survey was done by calling people on the phone and asking questions online in February. Between March 28 and March 2, 2024, a group of 1,071 Canadians who are 18 years old or older were chosen randomly for a study. The survey might be off by up to three percent, 19 times out of 20. “The numbers are based on the population, and because of rounding, the percentages may not add up to 100%. “

  • Employment increased by 5.8% as Canadian government created 41,000 jobs in February

Employment increased by 5.8% as Canadian government created 41,000 jobs in February

In February, the Canadian economy gained 41,000 new jobs. However, this is not keeping up with the large increase in the country’s population.

The government’s report on jobs says more people were unemployed last month, with the rate going up to 5. 8 percent

Jobs increased in different industries in the services sector, with the most growth in accommodation and food services.

The economy is not doing well because the interest rates are high. People are not spending as much, and this is causing businesses to sell less. But more people being born and living in an area seems to be balancing out some of those changes, especially in the job market.

The big increase in the number of people has brought more customers and employees to the economy, leading to more jobs in the country.

But other ways of measuring jobs show that the job market is not as strong.

Statistics Canada is focusing more on the number of people who have jobs in their reports to see if it’s going up as fast as the number of people in the country.

The government’s report on Friday said that the number of employed Canadians aged 15 and older has been decreasing for the past five months in a row.

That’s the longest time without any increases in a row since April 2009.

Meanwhile, people in Canada are getting paid more money. Wages were five percent higher than last year, but lower than the 5. 3 percent increase in January.

Canadian Visa Centre laments overcrowding due to applicants coming with pastors, friends

The Canadian Visa Application Centre in Abelemkpe is grappling with a surge in crowds outside its premises, a situation largely attributed to applicants arriving with family, friends, and even pastors.

The centre, which frequently witnesses long queues and individuals waiting outdoors, often exposed to the sun, is working to address concerns raised about the overcrowding issue.

Kojo Wilmot, the National Officer of the International Organization for Migration (IOM)-Canadian Visa Application Center, addressed the challenges during an interview on the Citi Breakfast Show on Citi FM on Thursday, February 22.

Despite acknowledging the complaints and recognizing the need for improvement, Wilmot emphasized the center’s continuous efforts to enhance its services.

He explained that overcrowding occurs for two main reasons.

Firstly, individuals who have made a booking and secured a date often arrive with an entourage.

The security personnel, however, only permit the person who made the booking to enter for the biometric process, leading to overcrowding outside.

Secondly, some applicants show up early for their appointments, and if their allotted time has not arrived, they are required to wait, contributing to the congestion.

Wilmot advised against unnecessary entourages, asserting, “We advise that there is no need to come to the centre with a pastor to help you submit your application or undertake the biometric because, at the end of the day, we have no say in the decision that is taken.”

The center remains committed to addressing these issues and improving the overall experience for visa applicants.

Canadian spy sentenced to 14 years in prison

A person who used to work for the Canadian national police has been sent to prison for 14 years for sharing secret information with people who are believed to be criminals.

The prosecutors said that Cameron Ortis, who is 51 years old, gave secret government information to criminals who work together in a group.

Ortis said no and explained that he was working secretly to stop a big danger to Canada.

He was found guilty in November after a trial that lasted for eight weeks at a court in Ottawa.

On Wednesday, Judge Robert Maranger said that Ortis will serve seven more years in prison, taking into account the time he has already spent behind bars.

This was the first time that Canada’s new spy law was used in a trial.

The lawyers wanted Ortis to go to jail for 28 years because they believe that a shorter sentence would show other countries that Canada can’t keep important information safe.

But his lawyers said he should only be in jail for seven years because he already spent three years in jail waiting for the trial.

Lawyer Jon Doody said that his client lost everything during that time, such as his job, friends, and savings.

Judge Maranger said that the 14-year sentence is a fair and suitable amount of time.

He said it considers his bad deeds and the tough conditions Ortis faced in prison, including being kept alone during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Ortis was taken by the police in 2019 and accused of breaking six laws, including ones about keeping the country safe. He was proven to have done the bad things he was accused of.

When he was arrested, he was in charge of the National Intelligence Coordination Centre, which is a part of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. It deals with important information and intelligence within the organization.

He got permission to have access to important information when he started working for the RCMP in 2007 as a civilian.

Prosecutors said Ortis used his job to give secret information in 2015 to three people in a group that launders money internationally, and to a man named Vincent Ramos.

US authorities had linked the mobile security company Ramos ran to drug traffickers and organized crime members in the past.

Ortis asked Ramos for almost $27,500 in exchange for giving him information about police activities, but there is no proof that he actually got any money.

In court, Ortis said he gave out secret information on purpose as part of a plan to trick people into using encrypted email so that security agencies could read their messages.

His lawyers said he did what he did to deal with a serious danger to Canada that had to be dealt with.

The prosecutors said that he shared the information on purpose without his boss’s permission. They said there is no record of his mission in the RCMP archives.

“His story was just a lie to make you think his selfish criminal acts had a noble and secret reason,” said prosecutor Judy Kliewer in court.

  • India urges Canadian citizens to exercise caution

India urges Canadian citizens to exercise caution

India has told its people going to Canada to be very careful.

The recommendation comes a day after tensions increased between the countries when they each kicked out a diplomat from the other side.

Canada is looking into believable claims that connect the Indian government to the murder of a Sikh leader who wanted to break away from India.

India said this was not true and called the accusations “ridiculous”.

Experts say that the relationship between the countries has become very bad and is now worse than ever before.

India’s foreign ministry released a warning on Wednesday because they are concerned about the increasing anti-India actions and supported hate crimes and violence happening in Canada.

The Indian government is not happy when Sikh separatists in other countries ask for Khalistan, which means a separate home for Sikhs.

The Khalistan movement, which was most intense in the 1980s, was a violent fight that happened in Punjab state, where most of the people practiced the Sikh religion.

It was stopped using violence and is not really important in India anymore, but there are still some people in the Sikh community living in countries like Canada, Australia, and the UK who like it.

Canada has the most Sikhs living outside of Punjab, and there have been many protests and demonstrations in support of Khalistan in the country. In June, news said India had expressed concerns to Canada about the safety of its diplomats there.

In a statement on Wednesday, Delhi said that its diplomats and some Indians who are against the anti-India plans have been receiving threats.

The advice is for people from India to not travel to areas in Canada where such incidents have occurred.
    “Video explanation,”

Trudeau: We don’t want to make India angry or upset.

On Monday, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said that intelligence agencies are looking into whether the government of India had any connection to the killing of a Canadian citizen named Hardeep Singh Nijjar. In 2020, India had labeled Nijjar as a terrorist.

Nijjar was killed in his car by two people with masks outside a Sikh temple on June 18th in British Columbia.

MrTrudeau said on Monday that if a foreign government is involved in killing a Canadian citizen in Canada, it is a violation of our country’s power and is not acceptable.

India responded strongly, stating that Canada was attempting to divert attention from Khalistani terrorists and extremists who were being harbored there.

Some Indian news said that Delhi’s announcement was similar to a warning from Canada to its citizens traveling to India. Canada’s government said that it had recently updated its travel advice for India. However, they explained that this update was part of their regular maintenance of travel health information.

The spokesperson from the BBC said that there is no new information about any risks added to the India Travel Advice and Advisories page. The government of Ottawa is telling its citizens to be really careful because there is a possibility of terrorist attacks happening all over India.

  • Ex-Conservative leader says Chinese misinformation targeted him in election

Ex-Conservative leader says Chinese misinformation targeted him in election

Erin O’Toole, a former leader of the Conservative Party of Canada, has claimed that China tried to influence the outcome of the 2021 election by spreading false information and waging voter suppression campaigns; a Canadian lawmaker who was born in Hong Kong has claimed that she was targeted for her human rights activism. Both claims are supported by information from Canada’s spy agency.

O’Toole informed the legislature on Tuesday that the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) had last week discovered a number of threats against him.

Each of these threats, he claimed, was made with the intention of smearing him, spreading untrue information about his political views, and seriously impeding his ability to carry out his duties as a lawmaker and as the head of the official opposition.

O’Toole emphasized that alleged misinformation occurred in the run-up to the 2021 general election, which saw the reelection of a Liberal Party government led by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.O’Toole is a current Member of Parliament (MP).

A day earlier New Democrat MP Jenny Kwan said that CSIS had also informed her that she was targeted within a foreign interference campaign and “would continue to be a target.”

“Coming out of this briefing it is more clear to me than ever that I will not be intimidated, that I will not be silenced in any way, whoever is trying to put pressure on me in whatever way they are trying to do it, they will not succeed,” Kwan said.

The lawmaker pointed to her activism related to human rights in Hong Kong following Beijing’s imposition of a National Security Law on the semi-autonomous city and her support of issues related to China’s Uyghur Muslim minority population as reasons why she was targeted.

The allegations come amid a years-long deterioration of ties between the two countries and comes amid a period of rising concerns in Canada about Chinese influence, including through the operation of overseas police stations and policing of speech in the country, which has a large community of people with Chinese heritage.

Earlier this month, Canada expelled an accredited Chinese diplomat accused of involvement in a harassment campaign against Canadian opposition lawmaker Michael Chong and his relatives. China quickly retaliated by expelling a Canadian diplomat.

The alleged harassment took place after Chong sponsored a motion to condemn China’s treatment of its Uyghur Muslim minority group.

O’Toole said Tuesday that he believed that Beijing aimed to retaliate against him for discouraging the use of Huawei technology in Canada’s 5G network and criticizing human rights abuses in the country, among other things.

BothO’Toole and Chonghave criticized Trudeau’s government for seeming to be slow to act on such intelligence.

Canadian Public Safety Minister Marco Mendicino said later on Tuesday that CSIS has been “very proactive in engaging of federal parliamentarians” and that he had undertaken reforms to improve the flow of intelligence.

The government is creating a national coordinator to fight against foreign interference and creating a foreign agent registry, Mendicino said.

China has repeatedly dismissed previous claims of political interference in Canada’s political system.

In the aftermath of the recent tit-for-tat diplomatic expulsions, Beijing accused Canadian media and some politicians of “fabricating false information.”

The two countries’ relations have already come under significant strain in recent years, in particular following Beijing’s detention of two Canadians in China in move widely seen as retaliation for Canada’s 2018 arrest of a Chinese businesswoman Meng Wanzhou.

Beijing repeatedly denied that their cases were political retaliation, but the two men, former diplomat Michael Kovrig and businessman Michael Spavor, were released on the same day Meng was allowed by Canada to return to China in 2021.

  • A reward being offered to find a fireball that landed in the US last week

A reward being offered to find a fireball that landed in the US last week

A space rock that shot across the sky last week before crashing close to the Canadian border is being offered for sale by a museum in Maine for $25,000.

Radar picked up the fireball, which was visible in broad daylight and produced a sonic boom, and this allowed NASA’s Astromaterials Research and Exploration Science (ARES) Lab to determine the location of the “strewn field”—a potential location for meteor fragments—near Calais, Maine.

Darryl Pitt, head of the meteorite division at the Maine Mineral & Gem Museum, said he was keen to study any fragments of the meteorite, which could contain valuable information about the solar system. The $25,000 reward is for the first meteorite piece found that weighs 2.2 pounds (1 kilogram) or more. However, he said the museum would be willing to pay for any specimen “irrespective of its size.”

“Finding meteorites in woods of Maine. It’s not the simplest of the environments,” Pitt said.

“It’s a sparsely populated area but not as sparsely populated as where most meteorites fall — the ocean,” he added.

Worldwide, only eight to 10 meteorites are recovered each year out of hundreds seen falling to Earth, Pitt said.

A meteorite that fell on a driveway in the United Kingdom in 2021 turned out to be an extremely rare type of space rock and is now part of the Natural History Museum in London.

Video: Meteor, meteorite, asteroid, comet: What’s the difference?

The Maine meteorite was visible for more than four minutes from around 11.57 a.m. ET on Saturday, April 8, according to NASA. Winds might have carried smaller meteorites across the border into Canada, the agency noted.

“For the light (of the fireball) to overwhelm the brightness of the day, it was a significant event,” Pitt said.

Pitt said a meteorite would look different from the surrounding rocks. The outside would likely be blackened — after being toasted by the heat as it plummeted through Earth’s atmosphere — while the inside would likely be a different color. It may also contain iron and therefore be attracted to a magnet.

The museum offered a reward for a meteorite once before. However, the search for fragments of a meteor that lit up the sky in the region in 2016 wasn’t fruitful, Pitt said.

This time, Pitt said he was “guardedly optimistic” becausethere is more detailed information available from radar data, and he expects a “robust response” from meteorite hunters.
