Haruna Iddrisu, Dep Minister for Communications involved in car crash

The Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, and the Deputy Minister for Communications and Digital Technology, Mohammed Adams Sukparu, have been involved in a road traffic accident on the Bolgatanga–Tumu road.

However, a statement issued by the Ministry of Education has confirmed that both ministers are in stable condition following the incident, which occurred in the early hours of Thursday, February 12.

“All members of the convoy are currently in stable condition and receiving the necessary medical attention. The Office expresses its appreciation to emergency responders, health professionals, and members of the public for their swift assistance and concern. Further updates will be communicated, as necessary,” part of the statement read.

The ministers and their respective teams were en route to official engagements marking the 40th anniversary celebrations of Tumu College of Education and Jahan College of Education in the Upper West Region when the accident happened.

Ghana has reported a surge in the number of fatalities resulting from road crashes this year. The National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) recorded one thousand five hundred and four (1,504) deaths, compared to one thousand two hundred and thirty-seven (1,237) fatalities reported in the same period in 2024, representing a 21.58 percent increase in the first half of 2025.

According to provisional data released by the National Road Safety Authority in collaboration with the Police Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD), a total of 7,289 road crashes were recorded between January and June this year. Per the data, a total of twelve thousand three hundred and fifty-four (12,354) vehicles were involved in these crashes.

As a result of these incidents, eight thousand three hundred (8,300) individuals sustained injuries. Additionally, one thousand three hundred and one (1,301) pedestrians were knocked down across the country.

According to recent data provided by the National Road Safety Authority, on average, eight (8) lives are lost every day due to road crashes. Each day, forty (40) road crashes are recorded, and forty-six (46) individuals sustain injuries. Daily, sixty-nine (69) vehicles and motorcycles are involved in road crashes.

To help combat the rising number of road crashes, the National Road Safety Authority has called for stricter enforcement of traffic regulations and increased public education.

The NRSA has emphasized the need for stronger enforcement to curb the alarming trend. The Road Traffic Act 2004, an Act to consolidate and revise the Road Traffic Ordinance, 1952 (No. 55), provides for more comprehensive regulation of road traffic and road use to ensure safety on the roads and to address related matters.

A person who drives a motor vehicle dangerously on a road commits an offence and is liable on summary conviction:

    (a) where (i) a bodily injury does not occur, or (ii) a minor bodily injury occurs to a person other than the driver, to a fine of not less than one hundred penalty units and not exceeding two hundred penalty units, or to a term of imprisonment not exceeding nine months, or to both;

    (b) where bodily injury of an aggravated nature occurs to a person other than the driver, to a minimum fine of two hundred penalty units and not exceeding five hundred penalty units, or to a term of imprisonment of not less than twelve months and not exceeding two years, or to both;(c) where death occurs, to a term of imprisonment of not less than three years;

    (d) where there is damage to state property, to a fine of not less than one hundred penalty units and payment for the damage caused in an amount determined by the Court.

The Court may, upon conviction of a person under subsection (1), (a) order the payment of appropriate compensation to an injured person or to the estate of that person, or (b) order the withdrawal of the driver’s license for a period of not less than three years and not more than five years.

A person who drives a motor vehicle on a road without due care and attention, or without reasonable consideration for other persons using the road, commits an offence and is liable on summary conviction to a fine not exceeding two thousand penalty units or to a term of imprisonment not exceeding five years, or to both.

A person commits an offence if, without lawful authority or reasonable excuse, that person:

    (a) causes anything to be on or over a road;(b) interferes with a motor vehicle, trailer, or cycle; or(c) interferes, directly or indirectly, with traffic equipment, where it would be obvious to a reasonable person that doing so would be dangerous.

A person who commits an offence under subsection (1) is liable on summary conviction to a fine not exceeding two hundred and fifty penalty units or to a term of imprisonment not exceeding twelve months, or to both.

Meanwhile, over one-third of emergency cases at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) have been linked to road crashes, according to statistics from the facility.

Speaking to the media, Deputy Medical Director of KATH, Dr. Yaw Opare Larbi, noted that road crash victims brought to the emergency unit often do not survive because their injuries are very severe.

“A little over 30 per cent of the cases that come to this facility, this Accident and Emergency Unit, are due to accidents, and most of the accidents, a few are domestic, but the majority of them are road traffic accidents.

“Now in Ghana, we know that our statistics, a lot of our road accidents are from errors, driver errors, pedestrian errors. And then we know that we have some percentage that is attributable to maybe things like faulty vehicles or maybe road conditions, but a lot of the accidents are preventable,” he stated.

5 vehicles involved in car crash at Okponglo

A vehicular accident has been reported at the Okponglo stretch close to the University of Ghana, Legon.

The car crash that occurred today involved five vehicles, four being private cars.

    No casualties have been reported.

It is believed that tailgating is the cause of the accident.

The relevant authorities are yet to arrive at the scene as of the time the story was reported.

Tailgating refers to the practice of driving very closely behind another vehicle.

This can be dangerous as it reduces the driver’s reaction time if the vehicle in front suddenly stops or slows down.

Tailgating is often considered aggressive driving and is illegal in many places due to the increased risk of accidents it poses.

Dixie Chicks co-founder of Laura Lynch killed in car crash

In a devastating turn of events, Laura Lynch, a co-founder of the renowned US country music band, the Dixie Chicks, has lost her life at the age of 65 in a car crash.

The Texas Department of Public Safety reported that the collision occurred near El Paso on Friday, resulting in her untimely demise.

Expressing their profound grief, the current members of the band shared their shock and sorrow in a post on Instagram.

The tragic incident marks the end of an era for the Dixie Chicks, with Lynch’s contributions to the group remembered as a significant part of their musical legacy.

“We hold a special place in our hearts for the time we spent playing music, laughing and travelling together.

“Laura was a bright light…her infectious energy and humour gave a spark to the early days of our band.

“Laura had a gift for design, a love of all things Texas and was instrumental in the early success of the band.

“Her undeniable talents helped propel us beyond busking on street corners to stages all across Texas and the mid-West,” the band said, adding that their thoughts were with Laura’s “family and loved ones”.

Originally formed in Dallas, Texas, in 1989, the band known as the Dixie Chicks was established by co-founders Laura Lynch, who served as a bassist and later as a vocalist, Robin Lynn Macy, a vocalist and guitarist, and the talented Erwin sisters, Martie and Emily, both multi-instrumentalists.

Their music, a blend of country and bluegrass, was performed at various festivals and venues, with the band also engaging in busking. Lynch, a pivotal member, contributed to the band until 1995, during which time the Dixie Chicks released three albums: “Thank Heavens for Dale Evans,” “Little Ol’ Cowgirl,” and “Shouldn’t a Told You That.”

It wasn’t until 1998, with the release of their album “Wide Open Spaces,” that the band achieved significant commercial success.

In a move reflecting social and cultural sensitivity, the band, three years ago, changed its name to The Chicks.

This decision came in response to criticism that the term “Dixie” carried associations with the history of slavery in the United States.

Serge Kelly, who is 23 years old and lives in Upper Mullaghmore, Cliffony, County Sligo, went to court in Carrick-on-Shannon.

He is accused of three things, one of which is not stopping after a crash.

A detective from the Irish police, called a garda, said that Mr. Kelly was officially accused of a crime at the Ballyshannon Garda Station on Monday evening.

When accused of not helping after the crash, the detective said that Mr. Kelly answered: “I know I made a mistake and should have stopped, but I didn’t. ”

When he was accused of not keeping the vehicle close to the accident, he said, “I know I should have, but I didn’t. ”

In simpler words: Mr. Kelly was told in court that he was accused of not stopping at the scene. He admitted to not doing it, even though he knew he should have.

10 dead in wedding bus crash in Australia

A tragic incident occurred in the renowned Hunter Valley wine region of Australia, where a wedding bus crash claimed the lives of at least 10 individuals, with an additional 25 individuals currently receiving medical treatment in hospitals.

The passengers, who had attended a wedding ceremony at a local winery, were on their way back when the unfortunate accident transpired, causing the bus to overturn.

Law enforcement authorities have taken action by pressing charges against the 58-year-old bus driver, accusing them of 10 counts of dangerous driving leading to fatalities. Authorities are still in the process of positively identifying the deceased victims.

Fortunately, the newly-wedded couple was not aboard the ill-fated bus during the incident.

Police commissioner Karen Webb said the site of the crash is “still an active crime scene”. “We’ve got forensics officers processing the crime scene, we’ve got crash investigation unit officers, we’ve got rescue officers [on scene],” she added.

Tragedy struck at approximately 23:30 local time [13:30 GMT] as heavy fog engulfed the area, resulting in a devastating accident. According to the police, the incident occurred when the wedding bus attempted to negotiate a turn at a roundabout off a highway in Hunter Valley. The bus rolled over due to the circumstances, causing significant damage. Authorities have successfully managed to upright the vehicle.

Acting Assistant Commissioner Tracy Chapman of the NSW Police revealed that the passengers were en route to Singleton, presumably heading towards their accommodations. Among the survivors, two individuals required emergency airlifts from the crash site. Reports from local media suggest that one of the survivors remains in critical condition, underscoring the severity of the incident.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said it is “so cruel, so sad and so unfair” for a “joyous day in a beautiful place like that to end with such terrible loss of life”.

“People hire a bus for weddings in order to keep their guests safe, and that just adds to the unimaginable nature of this tragedy,” he said at a press conference in Canberra.

Mr Albanese said some of the injured passengers are at John Hunter Hospital, but many have been flown to Sydney.

NSW Premier Chris Minns said the loss of so many lives was “nothing short of heartbreaking”, adding: “For this horrific crash to have occurred on a day that should have been filled with love and happiness only adds to the heartbreak.”

“For a day of joy to end in such devastating loss is cruel indeed. Our thoughts are also with those who have been injured,” he said.

Hunter Valley in New South Wales is known for its vineyards and native bushland, making it a popular spot for wine lovers and group outings or celebrations.

A guest at the wedding said the day had been a “fairy tale” until news of the accident broke.

“We all started panicking,” he told 7 News.

Police said they are still working to identify the crash victims and contact their next of kin.

“Family and friends of a person who may have been on board the bus are urged to contact Cessnock Police Station,” they said in a statement.

  • Car crash involving 72 vehicles leaves six dead

Car crash involving 72 vehicles leaves six dead

A massive car crash involving 72 vehicles in Farmersville, Illinois, Monday morning left at least six people dead and 37 people injured, police said.

The survivors, whose ages ranged from 2 to 80 years old, were taken to local hospitals with various injuries, some of whom are said to be in critical condition.

The Illinois State Police issued a statement explaining that the collisions occurred simultaneously on northbound and southbound lanes of Interstate 55 at Milepost 76, within a two-mile stretch from roughly Milepost 76 to Milepost 78. The statement also revealed that all six fatalities occurred in the northbound lanes, with one decedent identified as 88-year-old Shirley Harper of Franklin, WI. The Montgomery County Corner’s Office is working to identify the other five individuals and notify their families.

Several of the vehicles involved were tractor-trailers, and at least two of them caught fire. The lanes remained closed through the afternoon and into Tuesday morning. “Once the interstate is clear of all vehicles, the Illinois Department of Transportation will have to inspect the roadway before it is re-opened,” the police said.

State Police Maj. Ryan Starrick attributed the cause of the crash to a windstorm that generated clouds of dust, leading to zero visibility. “The cause of the crashes is due to excessive winds blowing dirt from farm fields across the highway, leading to zero visibility,” Starrick said.

The director of emergency services in Montgomery County, Kevin Schott, described the accident as a “very difficult scene” and said it was “very hard to train for.” He explained that emergency workers had to search every vehicle, whether involved in the accident or just pulled over, to check for injuries. He also stated that those involved were visibly and understandably upset.

Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker described the scene as “horrific” and expressed his concern for the safety of motorists navigating the dangerous conditions. “I am closely monitoring the horrific situation at the Macoupin and Sangamon County line on I-55. My team is in constant communication with the Illinois State Police, Department of Transportation, and Emergency Management Agency to ensure the safety of motorists as they navigate dangerous conditions,” Pritzker wrote in a statement.

The incident highlights the need for drivers to exercise caution in adverse weather conditions, including strong winds and poor visibility. The Illinois State Police have urged motorists to stay off the roads during such conditions to prevent similar accidents in the future.

Meanwhile, Drivers are speaking out following fatal crashes due to a dangerous dust storm in central Illinois late Monday morning, which led to the deaths of at least six people.

“You couldn’t even see,” Evan Anderson, 25, told The Associated Press. “People tried to slow down and other people didn’t, and I just got plowed into. There were just so many cars and semi trucks with so much momentum behind them.”

Anderson said a semi turned before striking his vehicle, which spared him from even more damage.

“The only thing you could hear after we got hit was crash after crash after crash behind us,” Tom Thomas, 43, recalled.

Gov. J.B. Pritzker described the scene as “horrific.”

The Interstate 55 incident, which occurred at around 11 a.m., involved 40 to 60 cars and multiple tractor-trailers, two of which state police said caught fire.

All of those who were killed were in northbound lanes, although more than 30 people on both sides of the interstate were sent to hospitals with injuries.

Those injured had minor to life-threatening injuries, with patients ranging in age from 2 to 80 years old.

Shirley Harper, an 88-year-old from Franklin, Wisconsin, was named as one of the people who perished, according to WISN 12.

Authorities set up staging areas away from the crash site.

  • ASAP Bari faces lawsuit from Miami car crash victim

ASAP Bari is facing a lawsuit in connection with a car accident he was involved in back in July.

TMZ reports Bari has been sued by the victim who was injured in the crash. The lawsuit accuses the A$AP Mob co-founder of driving his Mercedes-Benz “carelessly, recklessly, and negligently” before colliding with another vehicle driven by a man named Jorge Baez.

Baez is suing Bari for more than $30,000 in damages, as he alleges the accident left him with serious injuries, not to mention an assortment of medical expenses.

“It was nice of Kanye West to buy A$AP Bari a new Maybach and enable him to move on like nothing happened, but something did happen and A$AP Bari must pay for his negligence,” Baez’s lawyer Jared Newman told the outlet.

The news arrives just a week after Bari was kicked out of his fashion label VLONE due to his behavior.

VLONE announced the news on Instagram on Oct. 7, saying Bari’s “behavior is contrary to our collective.”

“VLONE is the stamp for creatives who stand tall, thriving on individuality, caring less about conformity that has long governed the fashion style of society,” the label wrote.

“Create your own stylish rules, set your own trend, embed your own morale in which you can express yourself creatively without limitations. In the new era of VLONE, our brand will embrace distinctive creatives, who defy the norm and inspire the willing.”VLONE continued, “In closing, we will not partake in any irrational behavior associated or related with Jabari ‘Younglord’ Shelton.
