Former Miss Ecuador contestant shot dead after posting her location on IG

Former Miss Ecuador contestant Landy Párraga Goyburo, 23, tragically lost her life in a daylight shooting, reportedly targeted due to an Instagram post that disclosed her location.

Párraga shared a picture of octopus ceviche on her Instagram story during lunch, inadvertently revealing the restaurant she was dining at to her 173,000 followers.

This post is believed to have enabled the assailants to track her down.

Shocking CCTV footage captured the moment two armed individuals entered the restaurant in Quevedo and opened fire, fatally shooting Párraga.

She was seen reacting as the attackers approached, but was unable to escape their gunfire.

Authorities are investigating the incident and trying to identify the perpetrators.

They suspect the involvement of individuals associated with Leandro Norero, a cartel boss who had a previous connection with Párraga.

Norero’s widow is believed to have orchestrated the attack.

Párraga’s past association with Norero came to light in December 2023 during a major organized crime case.

However, she had not faced charges related to this case, and her financial transactions are now under scrutiny by the Attorney General’s Office.

Párraga, a former beauty queen who represented Los Ríos Province in the Miss Ecuador pageant, leaves behind a legacy marred by tragedy and the complexities of organized crime.

Court bailiff lied, there is CCTV video to prove he wasn’t driven away – Dafeamekpor’s lawyer

Nii Kpappo Addo, Legal representative for Member of Parliament Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor of South Dayi, denied allegations that he instructed his office staff to reject documents from the Supreme Court regarding President Akufo-Addo’s new ministerial nominees.

During Wednesday’s court proceedings, it emerged that certain court documents, including the notice of hearing and the Attorney General’s opposition to a temporary court order, were not received by the attorney representing the South Dayi MP.

Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, presiding over the bench, mentioned that Nii Kpappo Addo, the attorney for the plaintiff, purportedly instructed a staff member to refuse any documents from the Supreme Court.

However, in an interview with Umaru Sanda Amadu on Eyewitness News on Citi FM, Mr. Addo refuted the bailiff’s claim, stating he did not issue such directives.

He mentioned the availability of audio and video evidence to support his assertion.

“We didn’t flee from our own case. We are supposed to be served with a hearing notice on the date that has been called by the court. So, I received a call from the bailiff of the court that he had a process for me. Unfortunately, on Tuesday, I wasn’t in Accra. He called me at exactly 10:50 am. So, I informed him that I wasn’t around, but I was going to give him the number of the plaintiff so that he could serve the plaintiff with the hearing notice or whatever document that he had. So, I sent him the number at 10:57. He acknowledged receipt.”

  • Stop sharing CCTV footage of crimes on social media – Police urges public

The Ghana Police Service (GPS) has issued a stern warning to the public, urging them to refrain from sharing Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) footage of criminal activities on social media platforms.

The GPS believes this approach will hamper its investigations and jeopardise the chances of arresting the culprits.

Director of the Public Affairs Directorate of the Ghana Police Service, ACP Grace Ansah-Akrofi, stated that such actions would benefit neither the public nor the service.

She emphasized that it would expedite the process of bringing the perpetrators to justice if the public shared the CCTV footage directly with the police.

“In the event of any incident, instead of circulating the CCTV footage, they should first share it with the police to help in our investigations. Sometimes, putting it out there makes our investigative efforts difficult because if you are a suspect and you know that there is footage of you, it reveals your identity and the like,” she said on Citi FM.

She added that the police had the expertise and the equipment to analyse the CCTV footage and identify the suspects, and that sharing it on social media could alert them and make them flee or destroy evidence.

She also appealed to the public to cooperate with the police and provide any relevant information that could assist in solving crimes.

Therefore, the public is advised to exercise caution and discretion when dealing with CCTV footage of crimes, and to respect the work of the police and the law.

  • Police should be the primary recipient of CCTV footage of criminal activities – Police cautions public

Police should be the primary recipient of CCTV footage of criminal activities – Police cautions public

The Ghana Police Service (GPS) has advised the public to directly share Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) footage of criminal activities with the service rather than posting it on social media.

The GPS believes that this collaborative approach will enhance its investigative efforts and contribute to the swift apprehension of perpetrators, ensuring that they are not left at large.

In an interview on Face to Face on Citi TV Tuesday, ACP Grace Ansah-Akrofi, the Director of the Public Affairs Directorate of the Ghana Police Service, emphasized the mutual benefits of such a strategy.

She highlighted that sharing CCTV footage directly with the police would expedite the investigative process and enhance the chances of bringing perpetrators to justice.

“In the event of any incident, instead of circulating the CCTV footage, they should first share it with the police to help in our investigations. Sometimes, putting it out there makes our investigative efforts difficult because if you are a suspect and you know that there is footage of you, it reveals your identity and the like.”

“So we want to entreat everybody; in case there is an incident, please share it with the police instead of putting it out there,” she said.

UK authorities release CCTV footage detailing fatal stabbing of Ghanaian student by two Nigerians

A 19-year-old Nigerian, Ogechi Eke, has been convicted of murdering a 19-year-old Ghanaian student, Kwabena Osei-Poku, at the University of Northampton.

The incident, which occurred on April 24, 2023, involved Eke and his accomplice, Melvin Lebaga-Idubor, stabbing Osei-Poku in a dispute over a significant amount of cannabis.

According to a report by northants.police.uk, the two Nigerians initially arranged to meet the victim at a university flat, claiming they wanted to buy drugs from him.

However, upon meeting, Eke and Lebaga-Idubor decided to steal the drugs and warned Osei-Poku not to sell in the area.

The altercation led to a fight, during which Lebaga-Idubor stabbed Osei-Poku twice. Despite the paramedics’ efforts, Osei-Poku succumbed to his injuries.

The incident was captured in CCTV footage released by Northamptonshire Police, depicting the victim pursuing the accused on the street and the two Nigerians running back from the scene.

This led to a fight and an eyewitness is reported to have heard Lebage-Idubor say, “This is my strip. What are you doing—strutting drugs around here? Our line is here.”

Lebaga-Idubor successfully took the drugs from the victim’s hand and left the campus with Eke.

Osei-Poku then pursued them to retrieve his drugs, leading to an altercation.

During the confrontation on New South Bridge Road, Lebaga-Idubor stabbed Osei-Poku twice, resulting in his death at the scene despite paramedics’ efforts.

CCTV footage released by Northamptonshire Police captured the incident, showing the victim following the accused on the street.

The video also depicted the two Nigerians running back from the scene and entering a building, where one of them was seen assisting the other, who was injured.

Security Analyst fears early release of CCTV footage may compromise investigations into bullion van attack

Colonel Festus Aboagye, a renowned security analyst, has expressed concerns about the immediate release of the CCTV footage related to the bullion van attack at Ablekuma.

He believes that the immediate release of the footage could potentially compromise the ongoing investigations.

The brazen robbery occurred in broad daylight at a fuel station in Ablekuma and resulted in the death of a police escort. The incident has raised concerns about public safety and security.

Colonel Aboagye, speaking on the Big Issue on Citi TV on Saturday, June 24, emphasized the need for a thorough and meticulous investigation to identify and apprehend the perpetrators of this heinous crime.

However, he criticised the owners of the CCTV footage saying it could allow the suspects to modify their appearance or take evasive measures, thereby hindering the efforts of law enforcement to bring them to justice.

He highlighted the significance of allowing the police to have first access to CCTV footage for potential leads.

“I have questioned the release of this video and the usefulness of releasing that video. It is not every piece of evidence that must be put out in the public domain, so why Star Oil or whoever is the owner of this video archive released it to the public, I don’t know.

“We shouldn’t be in a hurry, we should allow the Police to have first access and analyse and see whether they can have some leads from the video footage. They have done a disservice to the bereaved family and compounded their grief. The video footage has helped us to objectively discuss the issue but I don’t think that the video should have been out.”

  • After a six-month mission, Chinese astronauts have returned to Earth

After a six-month mission aboard China’s space station, three Chinese astronauts have returned to Earth.

They launched into space on June 5 to oversee the final stages of the Tiangong space station’s construction, which was completed in November.

On Sunday, the crew of the Shenzhou-14 spacecraft landed in China’s autonomous region of Inner Mongolia.

The mission was declared a “complete success” by China’s space agency.

In audio broadcast by state broadcaster CCTV, Commander Chen Dong and teammates Liu Yang and Cai Xuzhe said they were feeling fine after landing.

Staff at the landing site assisted the crew as they exited the exit capsule, which landed shortly after 20:00 local time, about nine hours after docking with the space station.

Ms Yang, China’s first female astronaut, said she had an unforgettable memory in the space station and “is excited to return to the motherland,” Xinhua state news agency reported.

While in space, the three astronauts oversaw the arrival of the second and third modules for Tiangong and carried out three spacewalks to check and test the new facilities.

A new crew of three Chinese astronauts arrived at the space station to make its first in-orbit crew handover on Wednesday.

The new crew lifted off in the Shenzhou-15 spacecraft from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Centre in the Gobi Desert in north-west China.

They will live on the station for six months. It will be the second permanently inhabited space outpost, after the Nasa-led International Space Station from which China was excluded in 2011.

It is the last of 11 missions required to assemble the station that is expected to operate for around a decade and run experiments in near-zero gravity.

The new crew will focus on installing equipment and facilities around the space station, a spokesperson for the China Manned Space Administration said.

China is only the third country in history to have put both astronauts into space and to build a space station, after the Soviet Union and the US.

Citizens watch TV news showing the Chinese astronaut crew completing the first in-orbit handover in Fuyang City, Anhui Province, China, December 3, 2022.
IMAGE SOURCE,GETTY IMAGES Image caption, Chinese astronauts completed the first in-orbit handover at the Tiangong space station

Tiangong space station, or “Heavenly Palace”, is China’s new permanent space station. The country has previously launched two temporary trial space stations, named as Tiangong-1 and Tiangong-2.

Over the next decade of the Tiangong’s operation, it is expected China will launch two crewed missions to the station each year.

China has opened the selection process for astronauts for future missions to applicants from the “special administrative regions” of Macau and Hong Kong, who have previously been excluded.

China put its first satellite into orbit in 1970 – as it went through massive disruptions caused by the Cultural Revolution.

In the past 10 years, China has launched more than 200 rockets.

It has already sent an unmanned mission to the Moon, called Chang’e 5, to collect and return rock samples. It planted a Chinese flag on the lunar surface – which was deliberately bigger than previous US flags.

  • Taronga Zoo: Five lions escape exhibit at Sydney zoo

Five lions have sparked a brief emergency at an Australian zoo after escaping from their enclosure.

The animals – one adult and four cubs – were spotted outside their exhibit at Sydney’s Taronga Zoo about 6:30 local time on Wednesday (22:30 GMT Tuesday).

The zoo was put in lockdown and one cub had to be tranquillised but all lions were secured within minutes, a spokesman said. No-one was injured.

An explanation for the escape has not been given.

But zoo executive director Simon Duffy called it a “significant incident” that would be investigated.

He told local media the lions had entered a small area “adjacent” to their exhibit – about 100m from where guests were staying at the zoo overnight. The main zoo was closed at the time.

“At no time did the lions exit that [adjacent] area or exit Taronga Zoo,” he said.

Mr Duffy added the small area was protected by a six-foot fence usually used to keep people at a safe distance, and the entire zoo was surrounded by a perimeter fence.

CCTV footage had shown that a keeper raised the alarm within 10 minutes of the escape, the zoo said.

Staff responded quickly to move all people on the site to safe locations, according to Mr Duffy. Four of the lions “calmly made their way back” to their enclosure.

The lion exhibit will remain closed until further inspections to make sure it is “100% safe”, Mr Duffy added.

Animal escapes at Australian zoos are rare.

In 2009, a lioness escaped its enclosure at Mogo Zoo, south of Sydney, and had to be shot dead because of the danger it posed to the public.

  • Watch CCTV footage of how alleged NIB informant ‘invaded’ TV3 premise to cause Captain Smart’s arrest

Godsbrain Captain Smart, the breakfast show host of Onua FM was arrested by operatives of the National Investigations Bureau on Wednesday, October 19, 2022.

Narrating events leading to his arrest, Captain Smart in a 3FM interview alleged that there were spies of the NIB on the premise of his media house who relayed information about his movements to the office.

The media house has released a CCTV footage of an alleged NIB informants whom it claim was feeding intelligence about Captain Smart and other staff of the station to the operatives who eventually arrested him.

A video making the waves on social media captures Alfred Ocansey, a staff of TV3 running commentary over a video in which he claims a woman made his way to their premise and carried out her informant activities.

    Why Captain Smart was arrested

The Ministry of Information earlier this week accused the journalist of impugning the character of President Akufo-Addo.

The statement was on the back of a broadcast by Captain Smart on October 17, 2022, in which he accused the president of being actively involved in illegal mining also known as galamsey activities.

Describing the claims by Captain Smart as false and malicious, the ministry further accused the journalist of engaging in unethical and irresponsible journalism.

The government in the statement said it was referring the matter to the National Media Commission for review and adjudication.

Despite the statement by government in which a threat of legal action was issued, Captain Smart in a subsequent edition of his programme reiterated his allegations against the president.

According to him, the allegation was on the basis of some of the government’s actions and inactions relative to the fight against illegal mining.

“These are the reasons why Nana is a galamsey kingpin. Osafo Maafo is a Senior Advisor to the President but asked us to allow Aisha Huang to go because of $2 billion when she was arrested. Is the $2 billion more important than our lands?

“Secondly, Chairman Wontumi is doing galamsey but still at post. Meanwhile, Kwabena Agyapong, Sammy Crabbe and Paul Afoko were suspended for doing things against party. They didn’t do anything to the state but the party. But Wontumi is doing something that is against the country. Is the party more important than the country?

“Also, the Minerals Commission boss has said Wontumi had no license to enter the Tano Nimiri forest. But the only thing government was able to do was to ask some small boys to put some old equipment there for them to burn them to suggest they have taken any action. If you’re not a kingpin, sack Wontumi,” he said.

  • Paris murder: Killing of Lola, 12, sparks immigration row in France

Grief and outrage in France over the murder of a 12-year-old girl found dumped in a plastic trunk in Paris has turned into a political row over the migrant status of the suspect.

Lola’s body was found last Friday in a courtyard outside the apartment block where she lived.

A 24-year-old woman has been remanded in custody on suspicion of murder, rape as well as acts of torture.

It has also emerged she is an Algerian immigrant under orders to leave France.

Shortly after President Emmanuel Macron met the murdered girl’s parents at the Élysée Palace on Tuesday and promised his full support, political opponents on the right and far right accused the government of failing the family.

During an animated session in the National Assembly, Marine Le Pen of the far-right National Rally party condemned the government’s “lax” migration policy.

“The suspect in this barbaric act should not have been in our country; what’s keeping you from finally putting a stop to this uncontrolled, clandestine immigration?” she said.

Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne appealed to her to “show a little decency” and respect the parents’ pain and Lola’s memory, saying: “Let the police and judiciary do their job.”

Lola disappeared last Friday after failing to make the short walk home from school in the 19th district of north-east Paris. By late evening her body had been found inside a trunk on wheels.

Members of the public stand in front of bunches of flowers displayed outside the building in Paris on October 17, 2022
Image source, AFP/ Image caption, Lola was last seen alive in the hall of her block of flats

A post-mortem examination found she had suffered cardiorespiratory failure “with signs of asphyxiation and cervical compression”. Wounds were found to her face, back and neck but had not led to her death.

As her father is the building’s caretaker, he soon retrieved CCTV video showing the suspect, Dahbia B, with his daughter in the hall of the block of flats on Friday afternoon. A man aged 43 has been accused of helping to hide the girl’s body.

The government’s political opponents have been quick to highlight Dahbia B’s status as an illegal immigrant.

She was initially stopped at a French airport on 20 August because her residence permit had run out. She had entered France legally as a student six years ago. Dahbia B was told to leave French territory within a month, under an order known as an OQTF (obligation de quitter le territoire français).

Although some orders are more immediate, Dahbia B had no criminal record so she was not placed in detention. OQTF orders are notorious because only one in 10 are observed, and Algerians are among the nationalities considered most likely to abuse the system.

Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin appealed to the far right to reflect on the consequences of their words, after far-right former presidential candidate Éric Zemmour labelled the crime a “Francocide”, or the killing of a French person. There was, the minister told RTL radio, a great deal of indecency in some of the political responses.

Several other figures on the right were also critical of the government, with Republican MP Éric Pauget telling the justice minister that “Lola lost her life because you didn’t expel this national”.

Mystery surrounds the motive behind the killing and the suspect’s lawyer has condemned the various rumours circulating locally. The Paris prosecutor has revealed that a figure one and a zero were written under the victim’s feet, but have not suggested why.

One potential motive cited by sources close to the investigation is a dispute between the main suspect and Lola’s mother. Dahbia B had been living in the same building with her sister but when she asked for a pass to enter the block of flats Lola’s mother refused.

The suspect is being held in isolation at Fresnes prison, south of Paris. Reports suggest she was a victim of domestic abuse several year ago and she is due to undergo a psychiatric examination.

A silent protest in tribute to Lola has been called off on Wednesday after a request from the family. However, a rally is expected to take place the following day, at which several far-right politicians are expected to take part.

Human bones have been recovered at a property where some of Leah Croucher’s belongings were discovered, according to police looking into her murder. She was 19 years old.

Her backpack and other personal belongings were earlier discovered by Thames Valley Police at a residence on Loxbeare Drive in Furzton, Milton Keynes.

The teenager was last seen on CCTV in the city on 15 February 2019.

Formal identification has not taken place but Ms Croucher’s family were being kept informed, the force said.

“It is likely to take some time to formally identify the deceased,” a spokesperson said.

Officers have been at the property since 18:30 BST on Monday, after they received information from a member of the public, and said on Wednesday that a murder investigation had begun after her possessions were found.

Later, human remains were discovered during “forensic examinations”.

Police described the scene as “challenging and complex” and said the “forensic examination continues and will do for some time”.

  • Nika Shakarami: Videos depict an Iranian teen protesting just before dying

According to her mother, who spoke to BBC Persian, videos aired online show an Iranian teen protesting hours before she passed away.

On September 20, Nika Shakarami, 16, is pictured burning her headscarf while standing on a dumpster in Tehran as people yell anti-Islamic Republic slogans.

She later disappeared after telling a friend she was being chased by police.

Her mother, Nasrin, also denied she was in a CCTV video put out by officials to support their claim that her death was not connected to the protests that day.

Mrs Shakarami has accused security forces of murdering her daughter, but officials have said she died after being thrown from a building that was under construction, possibly by workmen.

Last week, Iranian state TV broadcast blurry footage showing a teenage girl or woman whom it identified as Nika walking down an alley and entering a building through a door.

But Mrs Shakarami told BBC Persian on Monday that the person in the video was not her daughter. Another source close to the family also said that they did not walk like Nika.

Mrs Shakarami also alleged that her sister Atash and brother Mohsen had been forced into making false statements about Nika’s death while they were in detention.

“They threatened to detain my brother’s four-year-old child,” she said.

Mohsen was shown on TV last Wednesday night speaking against the current protests, as someone off camera seems to whisper to him: “Say it, you scumbag!” Atash was meanwhile seen saying that Nika “was killed falling from a building”. They were released after making the statements.

Nika’s family has said they located her body at the mortuary 10 days after she went missing, and that they were only allowed by officials to see her face for a few seconds in order to identify her. Atash has also said that the Revolutionary Guards told her that Nika was in their custody for five days and then handed over to prison authorities.

Mrs Shakarami said Nika had disappeared hours after attending the protest seen in videos that have surfaced on social media in recent days.

One of the videos shows a girl dressed in black standing on a dumpster on a street and waving a burning headscarf. A crowd around her is heard chanting “death to the dictator” – a reference to the Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who has the final say on all state matters. Another video shows the same scene from a different angle.

“Like Nika, I have been against compulsory hijab since I was a child. But my generation was not brave enough to protest,” Mrs Shakarami told BBC Persian.

“People my age accepted years of suppression, intimidation, and humiliation, but my daughter protested and she had every right to do so.”

“Generation Z” – defined as those born between 1997 and 2012 – has been at the forefront of the protests sparked by the death of Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old woman who was detained by the morality police for allegedly violating the Islamic Republic’s strict hijab law.

Nika is not the only young female protester to have been killed during the unrest.

The family of Hadis Najafi, 22, have said that she was shot dead by security forces while protesting in the city of Karaj, west of Tehran, on 21 September.

Another 16-year-old girl, Sarina Esmailzadeh, allegedly died after being severely beaten on the head with batons by security forces during protests in Karaj on 23 September, according to Amnesty International.

On Monday, the Iranian Society for Protecting the Rights of the Child reported that a total of 28 children had been killed during the protests.

Many other children had been arrested and were being held at detention centres, the group said.

  • Hacked to death: Gangster Salem Koudou dies in revenge for birthday party attack, court told

Salem Koudou, 19, was stabbed 32 times after he was chased by up to 15 people in Brixton, south London, jurors heard.

Darius Kwakye, 29, Donte McCalla, 21, and Tristan Bullock, 21, are on trial at the Old Bailey for his murder and an alternative charge of manslaughter, which they deny.

Opening their trial on Monday, Oliver Glasgow KC said there could be no excuse for the “murderous attack”.

The jury heard that on 20 August 2020, Mr Koudou – a member of Stockwell-based gang All ‘Bout Money (ABM) – and two others went out in a stolen VW Golf to attack rivals.

ABM was in a violent dispute with gangs known as 17 or Wandsworth Road, One Five-O (150) or Get Back Gang (GBG), and Four Ten (410).

After failing in one attempt, Mr Koudou and his companions went on to Brixton where they came allegedly across an “ideal target”.

Just before 6 pm, the VW Golf was driven head first into Kwakye’s parked Mercedes outside a birthday party on Marcella Road for Tyreicke Williams, 28, who was affiliated to GBG.

Mr Koudou got out with an “enormous knife” and began to chase guests, including Mr Williams and Kwakye, it was alleged.

Mr Williams fell to the ground and was set upon by Mr Koudou but managed to get away despite being hurt.

Mr Glasgow said the response was “immediate and violent”, “swift and aggressive” as party guests armed themselves and gave chase.

He told jurors: “The roles were now reversed, Salem Koudou no longer had the upper hand, and he had 15 or more people to escape from.”

    ‘No hope of survival’

Realising he was “hopelessly outnumbered”, Mr Koudou fled but fell to the floor and was set upon by members of the group, the prosecutor said.

Mr Glasgow told jurors: “In total, he was stabbed more than 30 times and the injuries he sustained were catastrophic.

“His lungs, liver, and stomach were damaged by the knives that were used to stab him, and the blades were wielded with such ferocity that some of the wounds were as deep as 14cm.

“Others damaged the bones of his rib cage, and one went through his skull.

“There was no hope of survival and yet seconds was all it took for this attack to take place, for his pursuers to have their revenge, and for the killers to disappear calmly as if nothing had happened.”

He added: “Given the build-up to this shocking violence, there can be no doubt that Salem Koudou’s pursuers wanted to avenge the attack upon Tyreicke Williams.”

The defendants, from south London, were allegedly identified as being among the group of men who chased and stabbed Mr Koudou to death.

However, Mr Glasgow said they do not accept CCTV and forensic evidence and deny that they had anything to do with the murder.

    The trial continues.

  • Greater Accra police unaware of newly installed CCTV cameras across the capital

Police in Greater Accra have disclosed that they are not aware of the mounting of new public CCTV cameras in several parts of the capital.

Over the past weeks, newly installed CCTV cameras have been seen across town, notably, Mamprobi, Laterbiokoshie and its environs.

The CCTV cameras which is common in most countries is used to increase surveillance in communities and to curb the upsurge of crimes in society.

Ahead of the December polls, this could be a strategy by the police to monitor any activity which may compromise the elections.

Residents and commuters have expressed worry about the new technological developments, citing insecurity.

According to them they have been left on the fence since there has not been any official explanation to the reason for mounting the CCTV cameras.

When GhanaWeb reached the Greater Accra Police PRO, Afia Tenge for clarification, she denied knowledge of such developments in the capital.
