He misinterpreted what I said – Prestianni denies racially abusing Vini Jnr

Benfica midfielder Gianluca Prestianni has denied racially abusing Real Madrid prodigy Vinicius Jr during his team’s Champions League clash with the Spanish club in Lisbon on Tuesday, February 18.

The game was halted for 10 minutes during the second half when Vinicius Jnr scored a goal in the 50th minute and was quickly seen reporting an alleged racist abuse to the referee Francois Letexier.

According to reports, Benfica’s Gianluca Prestianni confronted him, covering his mouth with his jersey while speaking, and Vinicius insist that the player called him a monkey.

This was after Vini Jr celebrated in front of Benfica fans at the Estadio da Luz and was shown a yellow card, while appearing to be targeted by objects thrown from the Portuguese crowd while celebrating.

Responding to the allegations of racism, the Benfica midfielder has denied calling Vini a monkey. He said,

“I want to clarify that at no time did I direct racist insults at Vinícius Júnior; he unfortunately misinterpreted what was said. I have never been racist towards anyone. I was never racist with anyone, and I regret the threats I received from Real Madrid players”

Despite his denial, Real Madrid’s Mbappe insists that he heard Estadio call Vini a monkey about 5 times, asking that he be banned from the Champions League.

Before Estadio’s response, Vini Jr posted on his Instagram, calling racists cowards.

His post read, “Racists are, above all, cowards. They need to put their shirts in their mouths to show how weak they are.

“But they have the protection of others who, theoretically, have an obligation to punish them. Nothing that happened today is new in my life or in my team’s life.

“I received a yellow card for celebrating a goal. I still don’t understand why. On the other hand, it was just a poorly executed protocol that served no purpose.”

In a post on their official X account, alongside a video of the alleged incident, Benfica defended Prestianni.

“As the images demonstrate, given the distance, the Real Madrid players could not have heard what they claim to have heard,” was the Portuguese club’s message.

    Mourinho’s remarks on incident

Benfica manager Jose Mourinho was captured having an interaction with Vinicius Jnr after he walked off the pitch following the interaction with Prestianni.

Speaking during a post-match interview, he indicated that he had been told different stories by both Vini and his player, Prestianni. However, he insists that he remains neutral and wouldn’t take sides.

In addition to expressing his belief that Vinicius had been disrespectful with his goal celebration, he pointed to the club’s legendary striker Eusebio as proof that Benfica is not a racist club.

Asked if he felt Vinicius incited the crowd, Mourinho said: “Yes. I believe so.

“It should be the crazy moment of the game, an amazing goal. Unfortunately, he was not just happy to score that astonishing goal. When you score a goal like that, you celebrate respectfully.”

He continued, “I told [Vinicius], when you score a goal like that, you just celebrate and walk back. When he was arguing about racism, I told him the biggest person in the history of this club [Eusebio] was black.

“This club, the last thing that it is, is racist. If in his mind there was something in relation to that, this is Benfica.

“They [Vinicius and Prestianni] told me different things. But I don’t believe in one or another. I want to be independent.”

Vinicius Jr has been a subject in many cases of racial abuse over the years during his career, especially in Spain’s La Liga, and most recently in European competition.

During an El Clásico against Barcelona at Camp Nou in October 2021, he was subjected to racist chants. Barely 3 months after the incident, a similar abuse happened in Real Madrid’s match against Athletic Bilbao. Fast forward, another attack came from some Atlético Madrid fans in May 2022, who directed racist chants towards him outside the stadium during a derby. That September, in a game against Mallorca, monkey chants followed one of his goals.

It went into another year, 2023, when Valladolid fans targeted him during warm‑ups. The most infamous incident came on May 21, 2023, at Valencia’s Mestalla Stadium, where sustained racist chanting led Vinícius to confront fans directly. This episode drew global outrage and even inspired Brazil to pass the “Vinícius Jr. Law” against racism in sports.

By mid‑2024, ESPN had counted 16 separate racist abuse incidents targeting him in Spain alone. The Valencia case remains the most high‑profile, but the Benfica incident shows the problem persists beyond Spain, underscoring the ongoing challenge of racism in football.

FIFA’s guidance on racism during matches says: “Following its unanimous approval at the 74th FIFA Congress in Bangkok, Thailand, on 17 May 2024, a global crossed arms gesture to signal racist abuse is now part of football protocol at FIFA tournaments. The No Racism Gesture is designed to empower players, team officials and referees to take a stand against racism.

“By crossing their hands at the wrists, players can signal directly to the referee that they are being targeted by racist abuse, prompting the referee to start the three-step procedure.”

UEFA has its own racism reporting initiative that referees can implement.

Both UEFA and FIFA have a three-step protocol for stopping matches after alleged incidents, which can end in matches being abandoned. The Athletic has contacted UEFA for comment.

Meanwhile, in May last year, FIFA announced that it had put forward a five-pillar plan aimed at addressing racist abuse in football.

The global governing body stated that it had engaged in an extensive consultation process with current and former players who are committed to instigating change.

One of the plan’s key suggestions involves implementing a standard crossed-hands gesture for players to signal racist incidents during matches.

The first pillar of the proposal intends to make racism a specific offence which is included in all member associations’ disciplinary codes and has its own “specific and severe sanctions, including match forfeits”.

FIFA said it will “pause, suspend and abandon games in cases of racism”.

The crossed-hands gesture will be used by referees to signal an in-game procedure in which matches are paused twice, and warnings are given, with the game to then be abandoned in the event of further racism.

In pillar three – ‘criminal charges’ – Fifa called for racism to be recognised as a criminal offence in every country, and said it would push for severe sanctions in the countries where it is already an offence.

Fifa also said it would promote education initiatives with schools and governments to “provide a future free of racism”, while an anti-racism panel made up of former players will be set up to review the progress of the proposal.

Champions League: Chaos mars Real Madrid-Benfica game after Vini Jr alleges racist abuse

It was a win for Real Madrid in their game against Benfica in the Champions League; however, the game was marred with allegations of racism, chaos and tempers everywhere.

The forward then spoke to Letexier and had words with several Benfica players. Other Madrid players were involved as the two sides clashed. Vincius Jr’s Madrid team-mate Kylian Mbappe also appeared upset during the stoppage. Madrid staff, including head coach Alvaro Arbeloa, spoke to both players.

During the stoppage, Vinicius Jr ran back over to Letexier, with the French official then appearing to invoke FIFA’s ‘No Racism Gesture’ by crossing his arms in an X shape above his head, which prompted the referee to engage the captains of both sides: Madrid’s Federico Valverde and Benfica’s Nicolas Otamendi while Vinicius Jr went and sat back down on the Madrid bench.

The game resumed after a 10-minute delay, with Vinicius Jr then booed by the home fans when he touched the ball. Not very long after Later in the half, Valverde also appeared to mimic a monkey gesture to Letexier, apparently indicating racial abuse.

  • “We will be back next season” – Flick after painful Champions League exit to Inter

“We will be back next season” – Flick after painful Champions League exit to Inter

Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick has vowed that his side will return stronger next season following their heartbreaking Champions League elimination at the hands of Inter Milan.

Despite the narrow 7-6 aggregate loss in a thrilling semi-final encounter, Flick praised his players for their determination and resilience.

The defeat brought an end to Barcelona’s dream of securing a quadruple in Flick’s debut campaign, but the German tactician remains optimistic about the future.

“We will be back next season,” Flick said, reflecting on the defeat. “I’m proud of my team, I’m proud of your team, we gave everything, and sometimes it’s like that. We have to accept it, and we start again next season. To win the Champions League, this is one of our goals…”

Hansi Flick’s remarkable success at Bayern Munich—where he led the club to a historic sextuple—is expected to shape his strategy as he looks to rebuild and strengthen Barcelona next season.

With their Champions League journey over, the Catalan side now turns its attention to La Liga, where they currently hold a four-point advantage over arch-rivals Real Madrid.

The two sides are set to clash this Sunday at the Munjua Stadium, with Barcelona aiming to widen the gap at the top to seven points.

“And of course, La Liga, it will be also a tough match on Sunday but we also give everything,” Flick added. “When they (the players) look in the mirror when they arrive at home at three or four o’clock in the night, or in the morning, I think they can be very proud.”

In his debut season, Hansi Flick has already guided Barcelona to triumph in both the Spanish Super Cup and the Copa del Rey, defeating Real Madrid in the finals of both competitions.

With only four matches remaining in the season, the reigning La Liga champions are now eyeing a domestic treble—hoping to outclass their fierce rivals once more to cap off a successful campaign.

  • Five Premier League clubs to compete in 2025-26 Champions League

Five Premier League clubs to compete in 2025-26 Champions League

Premier League is expecrted to have five teams in the Champions League next season after it secured one of the extra places for performance by clubs across the three European competitions.

Two leagues will be rewarded with a European Performance Spot (EPS), which was introduced in last season as part of a revamp to expand the Champions League to a 36-team competition.

England has been well out in front at the top of the table for most of the season, and the extra place was all but confirmed by a catalogue of poor results for Italian clubs in the knockout playoff round and the round of 16.

That left the Premier League needing only one win, or two draws, from the remaining fixtures and that was sealed on Tuesday when Arsenal won 3-0 at home to Real Madrid.

Fifth place in England will now qualify for the Champions League. Chelsea (53 points) sit fourth with Newcastle United (53) in fifth (and the Magpies have a crucial game in hand.) But a host of clubs are battling for the top five, including Manchester City (52), Aston Villa (51), Fulham (48) and Brighton & Hove Albion (47).

If Aston Villa win the Champions League (they play Paris Saint-Germain in the quarterfinals) and finish fifth then six teams qualify for the Champions League — the top four, the Champions League titleholders and the EPS, which drops to sixth place.

The maximum number of places in the Champions League could be seven: the top four, the EPS, plus Villa and Manchester United or Tottenham Hotspur as winners of the Champions League and Europa League.

The Premier League could have 11 teams in Europe next season if Villa, Man United or Spurs and also Chelsea won the three titles and finished outside the domestic qualification places. Titleholders automatically qualify as additional places if they do not do so domestically.

If Arsenal or Aston Villa win the Champions League and finish inside the top four, there is no transfer to the Premier League; only the top five will qualify.

Spain — which, like the Premier League, still has five clubs active European competitions — is set to take the second spot but could yet be caught by Italy.

Last season, Italy and Germany were the beneficiaries, with Bologna and Borussia Dortmund finishing in fifth place in their respective league tables.

‘Captain’! Arsenal fans gush over Partey after stunning display against Madrid

Thomas Partey delivered an outstanding performance as Arsenal defeated Real Madrid 3-0 in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League quarterfinal at the Emirates Stadium.

The Black Stars midfielder controlled the game from the middle of the pitch, helping the Gunners secure a huge advantage.

Declan Rice scored two stunning goals from free kicks, while Mikel Merino added a third to complete the win.

Partey, who used to play for Atlético Madrid, was heavily involved throughout the match.

He had 77 touches, completed 61 of his 66 passes, and showed great control and awareness.

He also made seven passes into the final third, recovered the ball six times, won four out of seven ground duels, completed both of his long passes, and made one interception.

Arsenal will now turn their focus to the second leg, which will be played at the Santiago Bernabéu on Wednesday, April 16, 2025, where another strong performance will be needed to reach the semifinals.

  • ‘I will choose Champions League refs over LaLiga refs’ – Madrid’s Ancelotti

‘I will choose Champions League refs over LaLiga refs’ – Madrid’s Ancelotti

Carlo Ancelotti prefers Champions League referees, noting that there is “less controversy and fewer VAR interventions.” This comment comes as Real Madrid prepares to face Manchester City in their playoff second leg, amidst ongoing disputes over LaLiga officiating.

Real Madrid secured a 3-2 victory at the Etihad Stadium last week, with Jude Bellingham scoring a 92nd-minute winner. Ancelotti described this as giving the reigning champions a “small advantage” heading into Wednesday’s match at the Santiago Bernabéu.

On Monday, Madrid executives met with Spanish refereeing officials to review audio recordings of a contentious decision in Madrid’s recent LaLiga defeat at Espanyol. This meeting followed an open letter from the club, asserting that Spain’s refereeing system was “completely discredited.”

“Yes,” Ancelotti said in a pre-match news conference on Tuesday, when asked if he “felt calmer” with Champions League officiating.

“I think there’s less controversy, and fewer VAR interventions. The VAR only intervenes when it’s necessary. In the Champions League, the best referees in each country officiate, so the quality is very high.”

Madrid have been unhappy with key decisions in their last three LaLiga games: the 1-0 loss at Espanyol, a 1-1 draw with Atlético Madrid, and Saturday’s 1-1 draw at Osasuna, where Bellingham was sent off.

“I’ve given my opinion about what’s happening,” Ancelotti said. “What’s happening is surprising, but I have nothing to add. Obviously we aren’t happy with what happened against Osasuna, Atlético … They were three games where we were hurt by decisions which I still don’t understand.”

Ancelotti said he was “hopeful” that Bellingham would escape a ban for his red card, with Madrid saying the referee was mistaken in his claim that the midfielder had insulted him.

The Italian confirmed that defender Antonio Rüdiger will be available for the City second leg — after missing out in Manchester — but said right-back Lucas Vázquez wasn’t ready to start.

He also rejected Pep Guardiola’s claim that City have a “1%” chance of progressing to the knockout phase.

“Tomorrow before the game, I’ll ask him if he really thinks that they have a 1% chance!” Ancelotti said. “We don’t think we have a 99% chance. We think we have a small advantage that we have to make the most of.”

“I’m happy with the game we played in the first leg,” Fede Valverde — who played out of position at right-back — added.

“I see how the team is playing, how we’ve been training. That makes you feel calm. You know the team will do well. It gives me confidence that we’ll go through.”

Valverde spoke up for referees in a news conference, which upset many Madrid fans.

On Tuesday, the versatile Uruguayan player went on social media to explain his remarks.

“I don’t want anyone to misunderstand me, but above all I want to clarify for our fans: If today I don’t talk about the refereeing we are suffering it is because I am aware myself, and I must focus on tomorrow,” he wrote.

“Everyone has seen what is happening to us in this league, and I haven’t forgotten it, but now we have to focus on tomorrow, and I will be 100% focused as I have always been.”

Man City lists ‘injured’ Rodri in Champions League squad

Manchester City have updated their Champions League squad for the knockout phase, including injured midfielder Rodri along with new signings Omar Marmoush, Nico González, and Abdukodir Khusanov.

However, Vitor Reis, who joined in January for €35 million ($36.2m) from Palmeiras, has been left out.

Marmoush, González, and Khusanov are all set to be eligible for the upcoming playoff tie against Real Madrid, which starts next week.

City, who finished 22nd in the league phase table, will host LaLiga giants Real Madrid in the first leg at the Etihad Stadium on Tuesday, with the second leg scheduled for February 19 at the Bernabéu.

Rodri will be absent from both games as he continues to recover from a knee injury sustained in September. Nevertheless, his inclusion in the squad suggests he might return before the season concludes.

The Ballon d’Or winner has expressed hope to be fit for the FIFA Club World Cup, which kicks off in the U.S. in June.

City manager Pep Guardiola has advised Rodri to take his time with the recovery and avoid rushing back.

UEFA rules allowed City to make three changes to their squad ahead of the knockout rounds. With four new signings in January, the club opted to omit Reis from their list.

The 19-year-old defender, yet to make his debut since moving from Brazil, was named on the bench for both the 3-1 win over Chelsea and the 5-1 defeat to Arsenal.

Paul Pogba rejects offers from Russia, others, eyes Champions League return

Paul Pogba has revealed that he turned down an offer to move to Russia while he was serving a doping ban. However, he is now focused on making a comeback in the Champions League.

The French star, who won the World Cup, was handed a four-year ban after failing a drug test in September 2023. His suspension was later reduced to 18 months after an appeal, but he was still released by Italian club Juventus.

Pogba will be allowed to return to football in March 2025 and has attracted interest from clubs worldwide. There have been rumors about possible moves to Saudi Arabia, Major League Soccer (MLS), and France’s Ligue 1.

While he was banned from playing, a club from Russia also made an offer, but he decided to reject it.

Pogba snubbed that offer and has told French Twitch streamer AmineMaTue of his ambition: “There are proposals, then there are interesting things, and not so interesting things… Russia, all that, there have been proposals, but that’s not the goal.

We have other goals. A club that plays in the Champions League? Why not. If it comes, of course, why not. We always want to be in the best clubs. After that it doesn’t depend on me, it depends on lots of other things.”

Pogba has been linked with a possible move to Marseille, where he could team up again with his former Manchester United teammate, Mason Greenwood.

Marseille is on track to qualify for the 2025-26 Champions League, which could interest Pogba, as he is used to competing at the highest level for big trophies.

Video: See highlights of Real Madrid’s impressive 5-2 win in Borussia Dortmund clash

Vinicius Junior achieved a remarkable hat-trick as Real Madrid staged a spectacular comeback to defeat Borussia Dortmund 5-2 after being down 2-0 at halftime.

Dortmund initially took control of the match with goals from Donyell Malen and Jamie Gittens, giving them a solid lead by the break. This matchup was a repeat of last year’s final, where Real Madrid emerged victorious with a 2-0 scoreline.

The Spanish champions began their revival in the second half, with Antonio Rudiger scoring a powerful header in the 60th minute to reduce the deficit. Just two minutes later, Vinicius equalised.

Captain Lucas Vazquez then put Real Madrid ahead 3-2 with a fierce finish from a narrow angle in the 83rd minute. Vinicius capped off his outstanding performance by netting two additional goals late in the match, both coming after dazzling individual runs that left Dortmund’s defense struggling.

    Vinicius inspires Real to win

Dortmund seemed poised to end Real Madrid’s impressive 14-match unbeaten streak at home in the Champions League when they led at halftime.

Even at 2-2, Dortmund’s captain, Julian Brandt, had a chance to regain the lead, but his close-range shot was expertly saved by Real keeper Thibaut Courtois. Less than a minute later, Lucas Vazquez scored, putting Real Madrid ahead.

In the first half, Real Madrid struggled to mount an effective attack, with Kylian Mbappe and Jude Bellingham failing to connect, despite Bellingham hitting the crossbar while the team was down 2-0.

However, after the break, fuelled by the inspiring performance of Vinicius—who is favoured to win next Monday’s Ballon d’Or—the home team looked nearly unstoppable.

Vinicius’s second goal was particularly noteworthy; he picked up the ball in his own half, sprinted down the left flank, and fired a shot into the bottom corner from the edge of the box.

Carlo Ancelotti’s team now holds a record of two wins and one loss from their three league phase matches, matching Dortmund’s performance. Meanwhile, Jamie Gittens made history by becoming the youngest Englishman to score against Real Madrid at just 20 years and 75 days old, surpassing Alan Smith’s previous record of 20 years and 129 days set while he was with Leeds in March 2001.

Champions League referee faces suspension over death threat to player

A seasoned Champions League referee has reportedly been suspended following allegations of issuing a death threat to a player.

Italian outlet Corriere della Sera reported that referee Fabio Maresca was accused of threatening Khaled Al Murshed during a Kuwait Premier League match between Al Kuwait and Al Arabi last week.

Al Murshed has claimed Maresca said, “See you next time, I’ll kill you,” though another player reportedly believes the referee said: “See you next time.”

The official, who has been involved in European football matches for six years, is said to have insisted it was just a joke,, but a punishment has now come his way.

Due to the allegations, Maresca is reportedly facing a one-month suspension from officiating in Italy. The 43-year-old referee was also pulled from his role as the fourth official in Tuesday’s Champions League clash between PSV and Sporting CP.

Despite his lengthy experience in Italian football since 2011, Maresca won’t face any disciplinary action in Kuwait, as the incident was deemed part of “on-field diplomacy.”

This could lead to his return to officiating matches sooner than expected.

  • Players wouldn’t have a problem cutting pay for flexible fixtures – Ancelotti

Players wouldn’t have a problem cutting pay for flexible fixtures – Ancelotti

Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti said he believes players would be willing to take a pay cut if it meant playing fewer games during the season.

Top internationals competing in the expanded Champions League and the revamped Club World Cup could end up playing as many as 85 games this season, which has led some players to complain about the new schedule overload.

“Football needs to reflect because the aim is to try to play less games to have less injuries,” Ancelotti said in Friday’s news conference.

“If that leads to lowering salaries, the aim is for players to play less games, so I don’t think the players will have any problem to lower their wages if they play less.”

Manchester City midfielder Rodri recently cautioned that players are nearing the point of strike action due to growing concerns about their heavy match schedules.

His sentiments were echoed by several others, including Real Madrid’s Thibaut Courtois and Dani Carvajal, who have voiced similar frustrations.

However, Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti noted that any strike threats from the players would not alter the current season’s fixture calendar.

“The complaints of coaches and players is not going to change this season’s calendar,” Ancelotti said.

“It’s important to reflect on this and the players more so because they are getting tired. We have to analyse this. The players are thinking about changes in the future.”

Ancelotti also spoke about his team’s form ahead of their game against Espanyol.

Los Blancos go into Saturday’s LaLiga game on the back of a hard-fought 3-1 home win over Stuttgart in their Champions League opener on Tuesday.

“Against Stuttgart we showed some great plays,” Ancelotti said. “I think we play beautiful football. I see that our fans are loving how we are playing.

“Can we play better? Yes, sometimes. With our players, with our characteristics, we have to win and play well.

“We have to think about winning and hope not to have injuries. I hope to see the team improving, keep getting that good dynamic back.”

Real Madrid currently sit third in La Liga, trailing leaders Barcelona by four points after five matches.

While the team has areas to work on, manager Carlo Ancelotti understands that progress will require patience.

Two Champions League refs removed over alleged misconduct

Two Polish referees have been withdrawn from officiating the Champions League match between Dynamo Kyiv and Rangers, following an announcement by the Polish FA (PZPN) on Tuesday regarding an investigation into allegations of improper behavior.

Bartosz Frankowski, who served as a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) at Euro 2024, was originally designated as the VAR for the third qualifying round first-leg match in Lublin, Poland, with Tomasz Musial set to act as his assistant.

UEFA confirmed that both referees have been replaced but declined to provide further comments on the matter.

“The College of Referees of the Polish FA will carry out a detailed analysis of the situation in connection with reports of improper behaviour of two Ekstraklasa referees who were supposed to work on the Champions League qualifying match between Dynamo Kiev and Rangers FC,” a PZPN statement said.

Polish media reported that the two referees were observed carrying a road sign down a street in Lublin.

Following a police check of their alcohol levels, they were taken to a sobering-up room early Tuesday morning.

As a result, Tomasz Kwiatkowski and Pawel Malec have been appointed to replace them for the match, which is being held in Poland due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Real Madrid announces Nacho Fernández’s departure

Real Madrid announced on Tuesday that Nacho Fernández has departed the club, signaling an imminent move to the Saudi Pro League.

Nacho, who led the team to a Champions League and LaLiga double this season, leaves Madrid after his contract expired.

The 34-year-old defender has accumulated an impressive 26 trophies during his tenure with the club, including six Champions League titles, since joining at the age of 10.

He made his debut for the first team in 2012.

Currently part of the Spain squad, which secured a 1-0 victory over Albania on Monday to advance in the European 2024 tournament, Nacho is reportedly on the verge of joining Al Qadsiah in the SPL.

While initially in discussions with Al Ittihad, he opted for Al Qadsiah’s offer to expedite his future plans, according to sources familiar with the matter.

“Real Madrid would like to thank and express our appreciation to Nacho, one of the club’s biggest legends,” the statement said.

“Every Real Madrid fan is extremely proud of one of the most legendary youth academy graduates in our history.”

The president of Real Madrid, Florentino Pérez, added: “Since he arrived at our youth academy as a child, Nacho has been an example to everyone and has earned the affection, recognition and admiration of everyone at Real Madrid.

Real Madrid is and always will be his home.”

  • UEFA files for a dismissal of Liverpool fans’ lawsuit over 2022 Champions League final

UEFA files for a dismissal of Liverpool fans’ lawsuit over 2022 Champions League final

European football’s governing body, UEFA, has requested England’s High Court to dismiss lawsuits initiated by over 1,000 Liverpool fans who attended the 2022 Champions League final in Paris.

The fans allege personal injuries resulting from the chaos outside the stadium.

The lawsuits against UEFA and UEFA Events, filed last year, stem from the disorder outside the Stade de France before the match, which was delayed for over 30 minutes.

Videos showed French police using tear gas on fans, who claimed mistreatment as they were directed into pens outside the stadium.

An independent review of the incidents outside the stadium concluded that UEFA bore responsibility for numerous near misses that nearly led to a disaster before the final, won 1-0 by Real Madrid.

While UEFA settled with a group of Liverpool fans in March, a separate case involving approximately 1,200 others is ongoing at the High Court.

During a preliminary hearing, UEFA’s legal team requested an adjournment of a forthcoming hearing, during which UEFA will seek the dismissal of the cases.

UEFA’s lawyer, Shaheed Fatima, said in court documents that the case could not continue because it would require the court “to make findings as to the lawfulness or unlawfulness… of the French state.”

Judge Edward Pepperall has ruled that the hearing regarding UEFA’s application to dismiss the cases will proceed on June 27.

Initially, UEFA attributed the chaos to the fans of the Merseyside club before issuing an apology following the release of an independent review last year.

Subsequently, UEFA established a refund scheme, but Real Madrid deemed it inadequate and refused to participate.

Additionally, UEFA initiated a series of measures for future finals, such as augmenting the number of security personnel and engaging fans in the planning and execution processes.

  • My team already in the Champions League mode -Ancelotti says

My team already in the Champions League mode -Ancelotti says

Carlo Ancelotti declared that Real Madrid are fully focused on the Champions League as they prepare for their final against Borussia Dortmund at Wembley on Saturday.

Madrid ended their LaLiga season with a 0-0 draw against Real Betis, having secured the league title weeks in advance.

They now have a week to get ready for the Champions League final.

The Spanish powerhouse boasts a record 14 European Cup victories, including five in the past ten years.

“The cold sweat arrives on Saturday afternoon,” Ancelotti said at Madrid’s pre-final media day at their Valdebebas training ground.

“The fear, that’s normal. I have experience. My team gives me confidence and hope. They look focused on the game. They’re in Champions League mode.”

Ancelotti’s teams have reached nine European Cup finals — three as a player, and six as a manager — and he is now hoping to land his second Champions League since returning to Madrid in 2021 for his second spell as coach.

“It’s always the same ahead of these games,” he said. “Excitement, happiness, being involved in the most important game of the season… We’re not on holiday yet, and the other teams are. They’ll see the game on TV.”

Ancelotti refused to confirm that back-from-injury Thibaut Courtois would start the final in goal, ahead of Andriy Lunin, as ESPN has reported.

“It’s very difficult,” Ancelotti said. “Of course it’s really difficult, because both of them deserve to play this final. Lunin has had a fantastic season, Courtois is back from his injury.”

“One of the two is going to play,” he added, laughing, “and the other will be on the bench.”

The Italian coach said midfielder Toni Kroos — who announced his retirement last week — doesn’t need another trophy to be remembered as a club legend.

“Let’s hope he can end his career with the Champions League, he deserves it,” Ancelotti said. “He’s gone down in Real Madrid history, he’s already there, but ending with a Champions League would be fantastic.”

  • Otto Addo to allegedly see Champions League final before arriving for Black Stars matches in June

Black Stars coach Otto Addo is expected to face a delay in his arrival in Ghana for the upcoming matches against Mali and the Central African Republic.

Reports indicate that Addo plans to attend the UEFA Champions League final before joining the Black Stars squad.

According to Angel FM, Addo is considering being with the Dortmund delegation at the Champions League final, which occurs just before the Black Stars’ engagements.

Ghana is scheduled to play against Mali in Bamako on June 6, followed by a home game against the Central African Republic at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium on June 10.

The Champions League final is set for Saturday, June 1, 2024, at Wembley Stadium in the UK, featuring a match between Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund.

Addo’s Dortmund will be facing the 14-time champions.

Borussia Dortmund held an official send-off for Otto Addo on April 18, 2024.

While initial reports suggested his arrival in Ghana this week, Angel FM now reports that he may first attend the Champions League final.

It is expected that Otto Addo will soon announce the squad for the two World Cup qualifying matches.

Video: Teary Pep bids farewell to ‘friend’ Jurgen Klopp as he exit Liverpool

Pep Guardiola fought back tears while paying tribute to outgoing Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp after the German called him the world’s best manager.

On Friday, Klopp said the former Barcelona boss was the “best manager in the world” and added if you put any other manager in the City dugout “they don’t win the league four times in a row”.

After City secured their fourth-straight Premier League crown following a 3-1 win over West Ham, Guardiola heaped praise on the German – who is leaving for pastures new this summer.

After the match, Guardiola said: “I will miss him a lot. Jurgen has been a really important part of my life. He brought me to another level as a manager. We respect each other incredibly. I have the feeling he will be back and thank you so much for his words but he knows that behind me there is a lot that this club provides me with, otherwise alone I can’t do it. I’m humble enough to understand that.

“I wish him all the best and hope his final game was special, he deserved it. He made Liverpool recognised with his stamp, and the incredible pride of being a Liverpool fan.

It’s not just about titles, there are personalities that when they arrive in one place they stay forever and Jurgen and Liverpool will be part of the level of [Bill] Shankly and [Bob] Paisley and these incredible legends.”

Klopp won the Premier League, Champions League, and a host of domestic cups during his nine-year spell at Anfield, and Guardiola has won a whopping 17 trophies during his time at City. Both will, arguably, be remembered among the greatest managers of all time.

While it is not yet known what is in store for Klopp after finishing his time at Liverpool, Guardiola will prepare his City side for one last push as they take on bitter rivals Manchester United in the FA Cup final next Saturday.

  • Alphonso Davies remains silent about potential move to Real Madrid move

Alphonso Davies remains silent about potential move to Real Madrid move

Alphonso Davies continues to fuel speculation about a potential transfer to Real Madrid following another impressive performance for Bayern Munich at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Canadian international showcased his talent during the second leg of a high-stakes Champions League semi-final clash against the Spanish giants.

Although initially starting on the bench, Davies was called into action early in the game to replace the injured Serge Gnabry.

He made a significant impact by scoring a remarkable goal in the 68th minute, seemingly sealing the tie for Bayern. However, Real Madrid mounted a comeback, with substitute Joselu turning the game around.

As Davies contemplates his future, questions about a possible move to Madrid persist.

The speedy 23-year-old has been consistently linked with a transfer to the Spanish capital and is entering the final year of his contract with Bayern Munich.

There has been talk of the Blancos making an approach in the summer transfer window, or waiting until Davies hits free agency in 2025, with the man himself saying when quizzed on his long-term plans: “Will I play here at the Bernabuu next? Right now, my agent is talking to Bayern. Whatever happens, I’m very grateful to Bayern.”

Real Madrid’s current strong performance by left-back Ferland Mendy may lessen the urgency for them to pursue Alphonso Davies.

However, Davies has remained a target for Real for some time, and with his contract at Bayern Munich nearing its end, a potential move could still be on the cards.

  • ‘Absolute disaster!, violation of rules – Tuchel fumes at Ligt’s disallowed goal

‘Absolute disaster!, violation of rules – Tuchel fumes at Ligt’s disallowed goal

Thomas Tuchel expressed frustration at the “absolute disaster” decision that disallowed Matthijs de Ligt’s late equaliser for Bayern Munich against Real Madrid.

Bayern, leading the heavyweight semi-final tie with three minutes remaining, suffered a sudden collapse after substituting 44-goal striker Harry Kane, allowing Blancos substitute Joselu to score twice in three minutes.

Although Bayern believed they had secured a 113th-minute equaliser with De Ligt’s goal, it was disallowed for a debatable offside call that had halted play, and VAR could not review the decision.

Match officials are told to delay such calls when decisions are so tight, with Noussair Mazraoui potentially level with the last man, and Bayern boss Tuchel told TNT Sports afterwards: “That was an absolute disaster. A violation of the rules. This scene must be played out until the end.

That’s the rule. The linesman made the mistake, and the referee made the second mistake. We were almost there and a very unusual mistake by the best player for the equaliser, we conceded in a very narrow decision in stoppage time.

Then we scored one and it was a disastrous decision from the linesman and the referee, so it feels almost like a betrayal in the end because of that decision. The linesman said sorry. That does not help at that kind of level—to raise the flag in a decision like this, in a close decision at the last minute.

The referee as well; he does not have to whistle; he sees that we win the second ball; he sees that we get the shot away. To whistle is a very, very bad decision. It is against the rules and it is a bad decision from both of them. It is a disaster, tough to swallow, but it is the way it is.”

Tuchel added, “Having the balls to raise the flag in a situation like that is a big mistake. And then the referee, when he saw that we had won the rebound, made the decision to whistle. It wouldn’t have happened the other way around. We accept the apology (from the linesman) but this is not the time to apologise. It’s the semi-finals and it’s not the time to make those sorts of mistakes.”

Real Madrid has secured their spot in another Champions League final, setting up a showdown against Borussia Dortmund, who are also from Germany.

Meanwhile, Bayern Munich will be left to ponder over a season without a major trophy for the first time since 2011–12.

  • Salah’s quarrel with Klopp sparked after the Eqyptian broke manager’s ‘interaction’ rule

Salah’s quarrel with Klopp sparked after the Eqyptian broke manager’s ‘interaction’ rule

Mohamed Salah’s touchline confrontation with Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp allegedly stemmed from the Egyptian breaking his manager’s rule regarding “interaction.”

Concerns have arisen regarding the atmosphere within the Anfield team following the incident involving the star forward during the Premier League match against West Ham.

Salah, Liverpool’s key winger, entered the game as a substitute in the 79th minute, shortly after Michail Antonio scored an equalizing goal for the hosts in the 2-2 draw.

Tension between Salah and Klopp carried over to the final whistle, as Liverpool’s leading goal-scorer headed down the tunnel without shaking hands with his boss, and it is that lack of interaction that is said to have started the argument.

The Sun credits a source as saying: “This has happened occasionally with Jurgen and other players. He is very big on interaction with his subs before they go on and felt it didn’t happen at first with Mo. Mo was obviously annoyed at being left out of the team and wasn’t in the best of moods while Jurgen wasn’t happy with his behaviour.

The players were given a couple of days off after the match and are meeting up again on Tuesday. It is hoped that by then tensions will have calmed down.”

Klopp attempted to brush the issue under the carpet afterwards, telling reporters after the match: “We spoke about it in the dressing room, but it’s done for me. That’s it.”

Salah hinted at brewing tensions with his remark, stating that there would be consequences if he were to speak out amidst ongoing speculation. Rumors persist about Salah’s potential departure from Liverpool in the summer, fueled by reported interest from Saudi Arabia.

Additionally, Klopp’s announcement of his departure at the end of the season adds further uncertainty. Liverpool’s position in the Premier League table is precarious, sitting third after a draw against West Ham, trailing Arsenal by five points with three games remaining.

  • Arsenal lose out on Club World Cup spot after Champions League elimination

Arsenal lose out on Club World Cup spot after Champions League elimination

Arsenal’s hopes of qualifying for the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup were dashed after a 1-0 defeat against Bayern Munich in the Champions League.

Mikel Arteta’s team faced disappointment in Germany as they lost 3-2 on aggregate to the Bundesliga side, ending their European aspirations.

This exit also means they miss out on the Club World Cup in the United States.

Teams can secure qualification in two ways: by winning the Champions League since 2021 or through a ranking system based on their performances in the tournament over four seasons.

With only two teams per country allowed to qualify, Arsenal needed to win this year’s competition to join Chelsea and Manchester City as UCL winners.

Their elimination opens up a spot for Red Bull Salzburg, who have played 26 Champions League games over the last four seasons.

Despite a strong effort in Germany, holding Bayern to a 0-0 scoreline until Joshua Kimmich’s 63rd-minute goal sealed their fate, Arsenal’s focus now shifts to the Premier League title race.

Currently sitting in second place, level on points with Liverpool but with a better goal difference, Arsenal must aim for league success as they try to prevent City from retaining their title.

Arteta’s side faces Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday as they resume their quest for Premier League glory.

  • Tuchel fires back at critics following Bayern’s qualification for UCL semifinals

Tuchel fires back at critics following Bayern’s qualification for UCL semifinals

Thomas Tuchel, departing Bayern Munich coach, fired back at his critics following his team’s advancement to the Champions League semifinals with a 1-0 victory over Arsenal on Wednesday.

Despite Bayern’s failure to secure any domestic trophies this season, as their 11-year Bundesliga reign was terminated by Bayer Leverkusen, Tuchel’s response to criticism was pointed as he guided his team to the European semifinals.

As the club looks ahead to parting ways with Tuchel at the season’s end, his ability to lead Bayern to Champions League success remains a testament to his coaching prowess, despite domestic setbacks.

Asked after Wednesday’s win at the Allianz Arena whether he felt any gratification given how his season had unfolded with Bayern, Tuchel said: “But where did the criticism come from. From you, the media, and now you ask me if I feel any gratification?”

Bayern Munich secured their victory with a decisive header from Joshua Kimmich in the 63rd minute, sealing a 3-2 aggregate win over the two legs. Bayern president Herbert Hainer praised Tuchel’s coaching as a “tactical masterpiece.”

With this win, Tuchel has achieved a significant milestone, becoming the first German coach to guide clubs from three different countries to at least the semifinals of the competition. He previously won the title with Chelsea in 2021 and led Paris Saint-Germain to the final in 2020.

“The semifinal is a huge step. The last four—that was fun. Great joy and great relief,” Tuchel told a press conference. “These are special moments. We beat one of the top Premier League clubs. We will have to see what this win does for the club. The season is not yet over. Especially not now.”

“We are very proud to have reached the semifinals and we will now see in two weeks what will happen,” he said.

  • “I am very disappointed” – Gundogan bemoans Barcelona’s exit from Champions League

“I am very disappointed” – Gundogan bemoans Barcelona’s exit from Champions League

Ilkay Gündogan expressed frustration over individual errors as Barcelona exited the Champions League on Tuesday, admitting that the Spanish side handed the victory to Paris Saint-Germain “in the simplest way possible.”

Barcelona, leading 3-2 from the first leg in Paris, initially took a commanding 2-0 lead in the tie with Raphinha’s 12th-minute goal at the Olympic Stadium.

However, the momentum shifted drastically after Ronald Araújo received a red card for a last-man challenge on Bradley Barcola, leading to PSG’s 4-1 victory on the night and a 6-4 aggregate win, securing their spot in the semifinals against Borussia Dortmund.

“I am very disappointed because we were in such a good position, not just after the first leg, but scoring the first goal as well,” Gündogan told CBS. “Everything was in our hands and we just gave it away in the most simple manner. We just gave it to PSG and that is the most disappointing part.”

Barça coach Xavi Hernández was fuming with the decision to show a red card to Araujo, labelling the performance of the referee a “disaster” and saying it completely changed the game.

Gündogan said the decision did condition the outcome of the match but did not criticise the on-pitch ruling.

“If he fouled him, I guess it’s a red card,” the Germany international added. “I haven’t seen the replay. It’s difficult to say, in these crucial moments, you need to be sure to get the ball.

“If you don’t get it, and I don’t know if he did, you have to stay away. I prefer to concede a goal there or to leave the striker one on one, even though he played the ball quite far ahead, so I don’t know if he would reach the ball. But let the goalkeeper have a chance to save us or even concede a goal.

“To get a red card, to go a player down so early, it just kills the game.”

Ousmane Dembélé made a successful return to Barcelona, where he previously played, by scoring the equaliser. He rejoined PSG for €50 million ($53m) last summer. Following his goal, Vitinha capitalised on a defensive lapse, scoring from the edge of the box after being left unmarked at a corner, which gave the French champions the lead.

“Again, [another] mistake,” Gündogan added. “We have to step out there and don’t let him shoot. He was so free.

“It’s nothing we haven’t trained, the closest man has to step out. Someone has to step out. No one did — or did too late. Again, not necessary at all.”

Kylian Mbappé added PSG’s third goal from the penalty spot and then sealed Luis Enrique’s side’s passage to the final four in the 89th minute after Gündoğan had hit the post and had a penalty appeal turned down.

“Decisive actions, crucial situations, they will either reward you or punish you,” Gündogan said. “Unfortunately for tonight they punished us.”

  • “I don’t fear them” – Pep warns ahead of second leg with Real Madrid

“I don’t fear them” – Pep warns ahead of second leg with Real Madrid

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola expressed confidence ahead of their quarterfinal second leg against Real Madrid, stating that he does not fear the 14-time Champions League winners.

Despite Real Madrid’s formidable history in the competition, Guardiola emphasised that he is not concerned about their past successes.

City have faced Real Madrid in recent seasons, both winning and losing at the semifinal stage, but Guardiola remains focused on the upcoming decisive match at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday.

“I don’t fear them,” Guardiola told a news conference on Tuesday. “I respect them a lot. I’ve faced them many times. I respect Real Madrid and if I say I’m scared of them, I would be false.

“There’s the rivalry; you want to beat them and do well. Sometimes you win and sometimes you lose. But I’m not scared of them and if they beat me, as has happened many times, we will say congratulations and wish them well.”

After last week’s 3-3 draw in the first leg at the Bernabéu, there have now been 23 goals in the last five meetings between the two teams.

City beat Real Madrid 4-0 at the Etihad in the semifinal second leg last season, but Bernardo Silva insists this version of Carlo Ancelotti’s team is better.

“Two different seasons, and it never happens to be the same game in football again,” said Silva. “I feel Madrid is stronger this season than last season. That was my feeling when we played them at the Bernabeu [last week].

For sure, they will want a bit of revenge [for the result in Manchester last season] so it will be a very difficult game.”

After achieving a historic feat last season as the second English team to secure a Premier League, Champions League, and FA Cup treble, City is poised to replicate its success this year.

A consecutive treble would elevate Guardiola’s side to contention for the title of the greatest club team ever. Silva acknowledges that this possibility serves as a source of motivation for the City squad.

“It’s obviously an inspiration,” he added. “We know how well this team has done and we want to create that legacy and to do another Premier League to do six in seven years and four in a row and we want to win the Champions League to do two in a row and if we win two trebles in a row that would be a legacy.

“In one week, we could be out of all the competitions but we are fighting for it.”

Everything okay Pep? Gvardiol, 2 others miss training ahead of Real Madrid clash

Manchester City faced a setback as three key defenders missed training on Monday morning ahead of their crucial Champions League clash against Real Madrid.

According to the BBC’s Simon Stone, Josko Gvardiol, Nathan Ake, and Kyle Walker were absent from the session.

Ake and Walker were already concerns due to their issues during the international break, while Gvardiol’s absence came after he was substituted off during Manchester City’s recent win over Crystal Palace.

Man City’s demanding schedule, including their involvement in a tight Premier League title race with Liverpool and Arsenal, has stretched their squad thin.

The team has faced additional challenges with participation in the Club World Cup in December and competing in multiple competitions simultaneously.

Although Walker and Ake are unlikely to be available for the first leg of the quarterfinal, there is hope that Gvardiol could recover in time.

Pep Guardiola described Gvardiol’s issue as a ‘little problem’ after the Crystal Palace match, as reported by The Standard.

Manchester City, the defending champions of the Champions League, are set to travel to Madrid to face Carlo Ancelotti’s Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu on Tuesday, April 9.

  • Martin Odegaard advises Arsenal to ‘respect’ Harry Kane ahead of Champions League showdown

Martin Odegaard advises Arsenal to ‘respect’ Harry Kane ahead of Champions League showdown

Martin Odegaard has issued a caution to his fellow Arsenal players, advising them to show Harry Kane the proper respect ahead of their upcoming Champions League match against Bayern Munich.

Despite Kane and Bayern facing recent defeats to Heidenheim and Borussia Dortmund, the English striker has had an outstanding season, scoring an impressive 38 goals and providing 12 assists in 37 games.

Odegaard emphasises that Kane’s formidable performance cannot be overlooked, urging his teammates to remain vigilant.

In light of Kane’s remarkable season, Odegaard stresses the importance of not underestimating Bayern Munich, led by coach Thomas Tuchel.

Despite Bayern’s struggles in the Bundesliga, sitting 16 points behind the league leaders, Odegaard warns against complacency, highlighting the unpredictable nature of football.

Odegaard was asked if Arsenal should fear Kane, and replied: “I think we should respect him, but I don’t think we should fear anyone.

“And we should focus on ourselves and the quality we have in our team, and that is all.

“[Kane is] a good player, of course, and I have played against him a few times and we know the quality he has in the box and he is also good in the link-up [play]. We are facing a good team on Tuesday.”

In his career, Kane has faced Arsenal 19 times, all during his tenure with Tottenham, scoring 14 goals. However, he has only won seven of those matches, with Arsenal claiming victory in seven as well, and five ending in draws.

The upcoming clash between Arsenal and Bayern in the first leg of their quarter-final European encounter is scheduled for Tuesday. Before the return leg, Arsenal will face Aston Villa over the weekend, while Bayern will play against Koln.

  • ‘I’m ready for you Barca! and I ain’t even hiding -Mbappe warns ahead Champions League clash

‘I’m ready for you Barca! and I ain’t even hiding -Mbappe warns ahead Champions League clash

Kylian Mbappe of Paris Saint-Germain has issued a warning to Barcelona ahead of their upcoming Champions League match.

Mbappe, who has previously proven to be a formidable opponent for Barcelona, notably scoring a hat-trick against them in a previous Champions League fixture, has once again put the Catalan side on notice.

His pivotal role in PSG’s 4-1 victory over Barcelona in the 2021 first leg effectively jeopardised Barcelona’s Champions League hopes. As another showdown approaches, Mbappe’s warning underscores his ability to impact the outcome of the match.

Talking to Telefoot, Mbappe said [via Marca]: “I am ready and, as always, I am not going to hide. Seeing the dynamic we have, I’m sure we’re going to give it our all, then the result… It’s in God’s hands.”

He also talked about the season being at a crucial point: “Like every year, we enter the crucial period of the season. At the end of April, we will already have elements to know what kind of season we will be able to have.”

The reason for the well-publicized split in recent months between Mbappe and PSG boss Luis Enrique is Mbappe’s unwillingness to pledge his future to the Parisian team.

Mbappe has consequently seen himself benched or substituted numerous times over this time. Enrique even made light of the circumstance by speculating that Mbappe, who is currently playing for Barcelona, would encounter a similar fate.

When PSG plays Real Madrid on Wednesday, April 10 at the Parc des Princes, Mbappe will be anxious to show off his skills against Barcelona because there have been rumours of him signing with Real Madrid as a free agent.

On Tuesday, April 16, there will be a vital away game versus Barcelona.

“I didn’t want to” – Rodrygo tells why he rejected €3m Liverpool swoop

Real Madrid’s talented player, Rodrygo, has revealed why he turned down an offer from Liverpool in 2017.

Despite being just 23 years old, the forward was already catching the eye of European clubs while playing for Santos in Brazil.

Liverpool expressed interest in signing him at one point, but Rodrygo opted to wait for a transfer to Real Madrid, which eventually happened in 2019.

Explaining that decision, Rodrygo has said: “We didn’t close the deal because I didn’t want to. I wanted to stay at Santos even though the offer was very good. The pathway they promised me would also have been very good for my career. I was going to finish my studies in England to prepare for European football.

It had always been my dream to play in Europe. Everything was very good, but my desire spoke louder. I wanted to stay at Santos and make a bit of history at the club. And that’s what happened: I was able to fulfil my dream of playing for Santos. But it’s true; I almost went to Liverpool.”

In his upcoming match, Rodrygo will face English opponents once again, marking a significant moment since his impactful performance off the bench in a semi-final match against Manchester City two years ago. This time, he will be up against the current Premier League title holders.

He added on being handed a tough draw in the quarter-final of continental competition: “It brings back good memories but also bad ones. This was an opponent that, to be honest, we didn’t want to face. And they think the same as well: they didn’t want to play against us.

It’s a game that everyone expects to be the final, but it’s going to be now. Man City are very good, but our team is also very strong. It’s going to be good to meet them again.

“They’re the Champions League winners, they’re the world champions, today they’re the best team in the world, so we have total respect for them. There are no bad or medium [City] players. There’s no player you can think of like: ‘This one I’m going to press because he isn’t good and he will give us a goal or a great chance.’ They have a very good control of the game and of the ball. It’s a very beautiful game, a very difficult team. It’s very annoying to play against them but I believe in our team.”

Real Madrid, currently leading La Liga, will welcome Manchester City on Tuesday for the first leg of a high-stakes quarter-final encounter.

Rodrygo, aiming for another impactful performance, will be eager to play a significant role in the fixture following his decisive brace in the previous match against Athletic Club.

  • Champions League: Ten Hag bemoans “expensive” loss of point by club in stoppage time

Champions League: Ten Hag bemoans “expensive” loss of point by club in stoppage time

Erik ten Hag has acknowledged that securing qualification for next season’s Champions League will pose a significant challenge for Manchester United following a costly week.

United experienced setbacks by conceding stoppage-time goals in both a 1-1 draw against Brentford on Saturday and a dramatic 4-3 loss to Chelsea on Thursday.

These results saw them drop five points from winning positions within a span of six days.

As a result, Ten Hag’s team now finds themselves 11 points adrift of fourth-placed Aston Villa and nine points behind Tottenham in fifth. With only eight games remaining, Champions League qualification appears increasingly difficult for United.

Moreover, England’s potential allocation of one of UEFA’s performance spots for the expanded 2024-25 competition further complicates the situation.

“In this week we have dropped five points in stoppage time and that is very expensive,” Ten Hag said.

“The points are getting more expensive because the games are running out; we know that. We have to catch up and we are many points behind so it will be difficult but we will keep fighting and I’m sure you’ve seen our team has character.

“They showed [against Chelsea] they are resilient and I’m sure they will go on Sunday and fight against Liverpool.”

Following their defeat at Stamford Bridge, Manchester United now face a daunting challenge as they aim to regain momentum when title-contending Liverpool visit Old Trafford on Sunday.

Ten Hag emphasised the need for his players to swiftly overcome the disappointment from the Chelsea game and hopes they will channel their emotions positively by approaching the match against Jürgen Klopp’s team with determination and a sense of urgency.

“First I have to deal with this, but I will say we can’t deal with this for long, we have to recover very quickly and turn this around,” Ten Hag said.

“From Friday on I will be in a positive mood, we have to be looking forward and take energy. You can take a lot of energy from being angry and that is how we have to do it.”

Ten Hag also addressed his decision to bench Marcus Rashford for the game at Chelsea. The England forward struggled to make an impact after coming on midway through the second half but Ten Hag insists he has no problem with the 26-year-old’s form.

“Lately his form is progressing,” Ten Hag said.“He has big motivation because he wants to be successful with us , win trophies and score goals.

He wants to win trophies and contribute and we still have a chance in the FA Cup and he wants to fight for the Champions League spot.

The Euros are coming so I would say motivation should be high and the form is momentum and we can always change momentum.

“Lately he scored; before Brentford he scored three goals in three games.”

  • Arteta charges squad to be “tricky and streetwise” after Porto loss

Arteta charges squad to be “tricky and streetwise” after Porto loss

Mikel Arteta emphasized the importance of his team mastering the art of being “tricky” and “streetwise” in specific situations following Arsenal’s loss to Porto in the Champions League first leg on Wednesday.

Statistics revealed that the ball was in play for approximately 50 minutes during the match, indicating that Porto’s tactics had unsettled Arteta’s side.

Declan Rice subsequently encouraged his teammates to demonstrate greater “savviness” in future encounters.

Asked whether his players are capable of being “bad guys” on the pitch, Arteta told a news conference on Friday: “I don’t know [about being a] bad guy but you have to be tricky. You have to be smart, you have to be streetwise, and you have to try to take advantage of every situation, and they know that.

“That’s a thing that has to be developed. The best players they have, they have that.”

Arsenal have been in superb form in the league in 2024; they have scored 21 goals and conceded just two, winning five consecutive matches in the process.

If Arsenal secures a victory against Newcastle on Saturday, they will narrow the gap to Premier League leaders Liverpool to just two points. Liverpool, managed by Jurgen Klopp, are set to face Chelsea in the Carabao Cup final on Sunday.

Despite the potential for Arsenal to gain ground, Arteta believes that his team is perceived as outsiders in the Premier League title race.

“I feel a lot of excitement, especially internally, because we are right in the mix and we want to continue to be there because we are in the Champions League,” Arteta said.

“We have a fantastic game to play at the Emirates and externally, it probably is different because the expectations are much more focused in the other two teams [Liverpool and Manchester City].”

Arteta was cleared of a Football Association charge in December following comments he made about the officials in charge of Arsenal’s 1-0 defeat to Newcastle at St. James’ Park in the reverse fixture in November.

The Arsenal boss branded the VAR’s decision to award Newcastle’s winning goal “a disgrace” in his post-match news conference, but said on Friday that he feels as though refereeing decisions have improved since he voiced his opinion.

  • Arteta downplays Arsenal’s Champions League history

Arteta downplays Arsenal’s Champions League history

Mikel Arteta dismissed Arsenal’s past shortcomings in the Champions League knockout stages as “irrelevant” and urged his players to forge their own path towards a dream final at Wembley.

The Gunners are set to take on FC Porto at Estadio do Dragao in the first leg of the round-of-16 clash on Tuesday, aiming to advance to the quarterfinals for the first time since 2010.

Arsenal endured seven consecutive exits at the last-16 stage between 2011 and 2017, with Arteta himself involved in five of those defeats.

However, the Spaniard emphasised that the past does not define the present, especially as the club did not even qualify for the competition again until this season.

Only Mohamed Elneny remains from the squad that lost 10-2 on aggregate to Bayern in 2017 and Arteta said: “The players know that we have not been in the competition for seven years, obviously as some of them were here and they know the story.
“And they know that what happened in the past is irrelevant. It is the challenge and ambition that we have now to go through.

Someone called [Lionel] Messi was another obstacle [in those years] for Bayern Munich, that we faced three times.
“This competition is what it is. Individual quality is extremely important. It comes down to details and you need your players at their best when the occasion arises. Tomorrow, for sure, we’ll need that.

“We don’t have the experience; that’s the reality. Ninety-five percent of these players haven’t played in this competition, they haven’t played in the last 16; I haven’t [managed in this stage]. But they have so much energy and enthusiasm to play well and that’s our desire and how we’re going to play the game.”

Arsenal finished at the top of Group B, winning four out of six matches. Despite their relative lack of experience, the Gunners are viewed as favourites to advance against Porto, who suffered defeats both at home and away against Barcelona during their group stage.

When questioned about whether winning the competition should be seen as the ultimate achievement in European club football, Arteta pointed out the potential opportunity to play in this year’s final, which is scheduled to take place in London.

“I don’t know if it is the best [competition],” he said. “But it should be incredible to have that feeling to lift that cup, in London — the first of June.
“It is there. It is in our minds. It is a dream but there are a lot of things you have to earn the right to do before that and tomorrow we have a big obstacle ahead of us. We are really looking forward to it.”

Thomas Partey, Gabriel Jesus, Oleksandr Zinchenko and Takehiro Tomiyasu have all stayed back in London, but Fabio Vieira has been included in the travelling party as he nears a return following groyne surgery in November.

Meanwhile, Arsenal avoids potential clashes with PSG and Inter Milan, drawing Porto, currently sitting third in the Portuguese league.

Other notable matchups include PSG vs. Real Sociedad, Real Madrid vs. RB Leipzig, Bayern vs. Lazio, Barcelona vs. Napoli, Inter vs. Atletico Madrid, and PSV Eindhoven vs. Borussia Dortmund.

The first legs are scheduled for the second and third weeks of February, with return matches in early March.

PSG’s draw with Dortmund pushes them to Champions League last 16

Paris St-Germain secured a spot in the Champions League knockout phase with a crucial draw against Borussia Dortmund, thanks to a goal from 17-year-old Warren Zaire-Emery.

Despite Dortmund taking the lead with Karim Adeyemi’s goal, Zaire-Emery’s equalizer proved to be enough for the French champions to advance to the last 16.

The draw became even more significant as AC Milan fought back to win against Newcastle, solidifying PSG’s place in the next round. Dortmund finished at the top of Group F with 11 points, while PSG secured eight points to join them in the upcoming draw.

For PSG, the Champions League has been a longstanding target, symbolizing their transformation under Qatari ownership. This result marks their 12th consecutive season reaching the knockout stages, emphasizing their consistent presence at the highest level of European competition.

Despite missing key players Neymar and Lionel Messi this season, PSG relied on Kylian Mbappe to make decisive contributions. Mbappe’s dynamic play created opportunities, including an equalizing goal from Zaire-Emery. The 17-year-old’s strike, coupled with news of Milan’s comeback, ensured PSG’s progression and kept their Champions League aspirations alive.

Although Dortmund and PSG had chances in an entertaining first half, the breakthrough came early in the second half when Adeyemi capitalized on a pass from Niclas Fullkrug to put Dortmund ahead. However, Mbappe’s brilliance and Zaire-Emery’s goal secured the draw, ensuring PSG’s advancement.

Mbappe had another goal disallowed for offside, and as both teams learned of the favorable results elsewhere, the match ended in a draw that suited both Dortmund and PSG.

Erik ten Hag faces backlash for his post-match comments following Manchester United’s defeat to Bayern Munich.

In their final Group A match of the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday night, United suffered a 1-0 loss to the Bundesliga giants, with Kingsley Coman scoring the only goal.

Despite needing a win to have any chance of qualifying for the last 16, United managed only one victory in their last five group matches.

In the aftermath of the Bayern defeat, ten Hag claimed his team had put on a good performance, eliciting anger and disbelief from some Manchester United fans.

  • Napoli makes it to Champions League knockout round after win against Braga

Napoli makes it to Champions League knockout round after win against Braga

Napoli comfortably advanced to the Champions League knockout stages with a 2-0 victory over Braga, securing their spot with two first-half goals on Tuesday.

Despite finishing second in Group C, trailing eight points behind Real Madrid, Napoli accumulated 10 points.

Meanwhile, Braga secured third place with four points, earning them a spot in the Europa League.

Union Berlin, after a 3-2 defeat to Real Madrid, concluded the group stage at the bottom with two points.

“Passing the group was our goal; we deserved to qualify and that’s good,” Napoli captain Giovanni Di Lorenzo said.

“There is a lot of work to do and to improve in some aspects, but we are playing good games with good performances and this gives us hope for the new year.”

Victor Osimhen played a crucial role in Napoli’s qualification for the Champions League knockout stages, scoring a goal as they secured passage with a 2-0 victory.

Napoli, able to afford a one-goal loss, sealed their qualification in the 33rd minute when Osimhen backheeled a Natan cross and then managed to nudge the loose ball into the net, leaving Braga needing to score four goals without reply.

This marked Osimhen’s first Champions League goal of the season.

The Nigerian international, who recently received the African Footballer of the Year award, missed both games against Union Berlin due to injury.

The Portugal side started energetically, with Rodrigo Zalazar’s backheel setting up Bruma for an early opportunity, but the striker pulled his shot wide.

Braga faced a setback with an own goal when Saatci’s attempt at a block ended up in the net, despite keeper Matheus’s efforts to save it.

Before Osimhen extended Napoli’s lead, Braga had a chance to equalise in the 25th minute, but André Horta’s long-range effort was tipped over for a corner by Napoli keeper Alex Meret.

“It wasn’t easy in the group; it was important not to concede goals. Great saves from Meret. We’re happy for him; it’s important for everyone not to concede a goal,” Di Lorenzo said.

Bruma had another chance just before halftime, unleashing a low shot in the 44th minute, but unfortunately, it went straight at the goalkeeper.

In the second half, Napoli’s manager, Walter Mazzarri, implemented tactical substitutions, substituting off Osimhen and Politano. The outcome remained secure, with Napoli in control.

Taking the reins from Rudi Garcia in November, Mazzarri saw his team successfully rebound to victory after enduring defeats in their three previous matches.

“I’ll have to be good at making the boys understand the difficulty of being champions of Italy,” Mazzarri said.

“I was interested in not conceding goals as well as getting through. We haven’t managed to feel solid, we needed balance.”

Napoli, the Serie A champions, reached the quarterfinals in last season’s Champions League, where they were knocked out by fellow Italian club AC Milan.

  • Arsenal make it to Champions League last 16

Arsenal make it to Champions League last 16

Arsenal secured their place in the Champions League knockout stages as Group B winners with a commanding 6-0 victory over French club Lens at Emirates Stadium.

The Premier League leaders only needed a point to advance to the last 16 after PSV Eindhoven’s comeback win at Sevilla earlier that evening. Mikel Arteta’s team delivered an emphatic performance with first-half goals from Kai Havertz, Gabriel Jesus, Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Martinelli, and Martin Odegaard. Jorginho, coming on as a substitute, completed the scoring with a late penalty.

Despite the one-sided nature of the match, the joyous atmosphere was marred when visiting fans threw a lit flare at home supporters after Saka’s 23rd-minute goal.

With first place in the group secured, Arteta can now rotate his squad for the next match in Eindhoven, given the luxury of having already advanced to the knockout stages.

Arsenal dominated from the start, and Lens struggled to keep up. Havertz opened the scoring in the 13th minute, followed by goals from Jesus and Saka. Martinelli added a fourth with a brilliant finish, and Odegaard volleyed home a fifth before halftime.

Arsenal continued to control the game in the second half, and Jorginho’s late penalty sealed the comprehensive victory. The result allows Arteta to rest key players in the upcoming matches, providing flexibility during a busy December schedule.

Haaland now fastest and youngest player to score 40 goals in UCL

Erling Haaland has made football history by achieving the dual distinction of being both the fastest and youngest player to score 40 goals in the Champions League, eclipsing Kylian Mbappe’s previous record.

The Norwegian phenom contributed a goal as Manchester City staged a comeback from a 2-0 deficit to triumph 3-2 against RB Leipzig, maintaining their unblemished record in this season’s premier European competition.

Haaland’s 40th goal in the Champions League came in only his 35th appearance, establishing him as the quickest player ever to reach this milestone, surpassing the previous record held by Ruud van Nistelrooy by 10 matches.

At the age of 23, Haaland also secured the title of the youngest player to reach 40 Champions League goals, breaking Mbappe’s record set in November 2022.

This remarkable achievement adds to Haaland’s week of records, having recently become the fastest player to score 50 goals in the Premier League. His goal against Liverpool in his 48th match in the English top-flight surpassed the previous mark of 65 games set by Andy Cole.

Speaking about City’s win, manager Pep Guardiola expressed satisfaction with the team’s performance, emphasising their ability to maintain high standards and consistency over the years. Looking ahead, Guardiola highlighted the significance of finishing first in the group stage to secure a favourable position in the Round of 16.

Pep Guardiola said: “Of course we are incredibly happy to have qualified with two games left. Finish first. We have time to think about it. Maybe we were not… clinical is not the right word… not clear, sweet, soft enough in the last moment to score more goals. But I love to see the team.

“The word that has defined this group of players for many years is consistency. We have high standards, and that is why we are still in the Premier League and qualified for the Champions League. People say, ‘Yeah, the group stage is easy’, but you have to do it. In life, you have to do it when people expect you to do it. Two games left.

“Leipzig are the toughest opponents in this group and we have to try and finish further. It is important in the last 16 to have the weapon of second game at home rather than away.”

After helping City clinch the top spot in their group, Haaland may be allowed a rest for their final match against Crvena Zvezda in December. And the Norwegian will be looking to further boost his Premier League goal tally when the Cityzens take on title rivals Tottenham Hotspur back at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday.

UEFA fines Celtic over fans display of Palestinian flags in Champions League game

Celtic has been fined £15,200 following their Champions League match against Atletico Madrid last month in Glasgow, where fans waved Palestinian flags, UEFA announced on Wednesday.

The governing body stated that the flags, numbering in the hundreds, were considered “provocative messages of an offensive nature.”

Fans, who had been warned by the Scottish club not to display flags before the October 25th game, could be heard singing “You’ll Never Walk Alone” while holding the Palestinian flags in a video shared widely on Instagram.

Supporters also unfurled two large banners at Celtic Park that read “Free Palestine” and “Victory to the Resistance”.

The Hamas-led government in Gaza reports that, in the conflict with Israel, a total of at least 13,300 Palestinians have lost their lives, including approximately 5,600 children.

In Champions League Group E, Celtic currently hold the fourth position with one point after playing four games.

Additionally, the club has received a £10,000 fine for instances of fans obstructing passageways and using pyrotechnics.

UEFA accused for presentation of false evidence on chaos surrounding 2022 Champions League Final

UEFA is facing allegations of providing “completely untrue” evidence during its internal investigation into the 2022 Champions League final.

According to The Guardian, the governing body of European football has been accused of presenting evidence that is deemed to be entirely false in the context of the events surrounding the final match between Liverpool and Real Madrid.

Leading up to the game, numerous fans experienced extensive delays, confrontations with local troublemakers, and inadequate policing.

The accusations have been leveled by Sharon Burkhalter-Lau, who served as the second-in-command during the game and held the position of UEFA’s operations director at that time.

UEFA established a panel of experts to investigate the occurrences surrounding the final match. While they determined that the governing body bore “primary responsibility” for the mishap, they absolved the safety and security unit, headed by Zeljko Pavlica, a close associate of President Aleksander Ceferin, of any wrongdoing.

Instead, they attributed blame to Burkhalter-Lau’s events division, stating that they had “marginalised” the safety unit.

The Guardian has seen memos sent to UEFA’s general secretary, Theodore Theodoridis and three other senior officials in which Burkhalter-Lau rejected the evidence and claimed it was “completely untrue”.

She instead claimed that the problems mainly stemmed from the Paris police, over whom UEFA has no control.

Burkhalter-Lau has also alleged that Pavlica and his team missed numerous safety briefings and failed to provide important information and context for the planning process.

The report claims that Pavlica’s background, which is in personal security, has previously been questioned by some safety professionals.

Burkhalter-Lau wrote: “The claim that Uefa Events… senior management marginalised the Uefa security unit is based on statements provided by Uefa that were untrue and concerted.”

It remains to be seen if UEFA will issue an official rebuttal to the allegations.

Guardiola says City is ‘in trouble’ as Silva joins lengthy injury list

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has expressed concern, stating that his team is facing a challenging situation following the injury to Portuguese midfielder Bernardo Silva (29).

Silva, who recently extended his contract with City until 2026, had to leave the field before halftime during City’s 3-1 victory over Red Star Belgrade in their Champions League opening match on Tuesday.

City is already dealing with the absence of crucial players like Kevin De Bruyne, John Stones, Jack Grealish, and Mateo Kovacic, all of whom are sidelined due to injuries.

“He (Silva) didn’t say anything at the end,” Guardiola said.

“I didn’t speak with the doctors, but apparently, for the next games, he won’t be able to play.”

Premier League leaders Manchester City next host Nottingham Forest on Saturday, looking to make it six wins from six, but Guardiola is worried about the impact of having so many key players absent at the same time.

“We are in trouble but I am not going to say, ‘Oh, we have a lot of injuries,’” he told reporters.

“When we have five important players—really, really important players—injured. To sustain that for a long time will be difficult. But it is what it is.”

  • Jude Bellingham ready for ‘real’ Madrid debut in Champions League

Jude Bellingham ready for ‘real’ Madrid debut in Champions League

Jude Bellingham, aged 20, has made an incredible start to his tenure in the Spanish capital with Real Madrid. He scored on his debut and has continued this scoring streak in four of the five subsequent matches.

The English midfielder has netted five goals in as many La Liga games, making a significant impact after his €103 million (£89 million) transfer from Borussia Dortmund this summer.

Real Madrid has maintained a flawless record in its initial domestic matches this season. However, their true challenge begins with the commencement of the Champions League this week.

In the highly anticipated competition, Bellingham, at 20 years old, is poised to make his “second” debut for Los Blancos against Union Berlin on Wednesday at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Real Madrid places immense value on this tournament, having been defeated 4-0 by Manchester City in the second leg of last season’s semi-final, ultimately losing 5-1 on aggregate.

The acquisition of Bellingham was, in part, a response to that humbling defeat.

Madrid have started reducing minutes for their veteran players in midfield—Luka Modric and Toni Kroos—while allowing Bellingham, Eduardo Camavinga, Aurelien Tchouameni and Fede Valverde more opportunities.

Bellingham adds to the tougher core of Madrid’s sport this season, shorn of Ballon d’Or winner Karim Benzema, who departed for a new adventure in Saudi Arabian football in the summer.

Facing a Bundesliga side in Europe, Bellingham should feel comfortable, although it has become clear that he has already made himself at home.

In his first appearance at the hallowed Bernabeu, the England international nearly blew the stadium’s new roof off with a last gasp 95th minute strike to earn Madrid a narrow win over Getafe in a derby on September 2.

    Jude Bellingham

Wearing the No. 5 on his back in tribute to Zinedine Zidane, Bellingham has quickly become a fan favourite at Madrid.

Celebrating his goals with his arms open wide, as if to share his joy with the supporters, he has instantly taken to him in a way that never happened with Welsh winger Gareth Bale.

Bellingham has been serenaded with the chorus of the Beatles song “Hey Jude”, which he said was a special moment.

“When they sang ‘Hey Jude’ at the end, I got goosebumps,” he told Real Madrid TV after the win over Getafe.

“I just wanted to turn and stand still and listen to it while my legs were shaking.”

Bellingham nodded to Spanish culture with a matador’s flag-waving gesture after dodging an attempted barge by a Getafe player.

“Good players with personalities suffer a bit less than the others,” said Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti, when asked how Bellingham had clicked so quickly.

“There’s no other reason. A player with personality, above all, more than quality, means that an important shirt like Real Madrid’s doesn’t weigh so much.”

That personality was on display when he led England to the World Cup quarterfinals last year in Qatar at only 19.

Thus far, Ancelotti has deployed Bellingham as a number 10, providing a strong physical presence in the area behind the nimble Brazilian duo of Rodrygo and Vinicius Junior, the latter of whom is currently injured.

The only match in which he has not scored was Sunday’s 2-1 comeback victory over Real Sociedad, where he dropped deeper and got stuck in the midfield battle.

“He had a consistent game, he didn’t get into the box until right at the end but he was involved throughout, working a lot,” said Ancelotti.

Bellingham’s goals have replaced Benzema’s; he has played more like the French forward than Les Bleus icon Zidane since joining the club.

Real Madrid were linked with Paris Saint-Germain striker Kylian Mbappe this summer, who has made it clear he is keen on joining Los Blancos.

However, with Mbappe’s contract due to expire at the end of the season, it would have been a big and potentially unnecessary investment for Madrid, which they thought better of.

Bellingham’s goals were the final nail in that coffin, as he showed he can make the difference in the opposition box in the attacking position Ancelotti has created for him.

Perhaps Mbappe will arrive next summer, and perhaps a new coach will change Bellingham’s role once Ancelotti takes over the Brazilian national team, but in the short term, the current setup has suited coach and player just fine.

Ancelotti scores Man City as favourites to win Champions League

The 64-year-old manager of Real Madrid, Carlo Ancelotti, emphasised on Tuesday that his team never regards themselves as favourites to win the Champions League, despite their illustrious history in the competition.

He pointed out that bookmakers are favouring the defending champions, Manchester City.

Real Madrid, who secured their 14th European Cup victory in 2022 but were defeated by Manchester City in the semi-finals last season, are set to kick off their Group C campaign with a home match against Union Berlin on Wednesday.

In addition to Union Berlin, they will also face Napoli, the Serie A champions, and Braga from Portugal during the group stage.

“City are favourites because they have a squad that saw them win it last season and they haven’t changed much.

“However, in the Champions League, like always, there are surprises at the end,” Ancelotti told reporters ahead of facing Union at the Bernabeu.

“Real Madrid are a team that is going to fight until the end. We never think of ourselves as favourites, just as I think City don’t. They won it last year, they can win the Champions League.

Real may be taking on Champions League debutants Union, but Ancelotti stressed they would not take the Germans lightly.

“They’re a new team in the Champions League but the fact they’re here means they’ve done very well. They’re well organised defensively, they’re solid and they play with intensity…,” he said.

“The Champions League is a special competition for us. We’re going to treat tomorrow’s game as something special. We want to get off to a good start in the group stage and we’re playing at home.”

The Italian added that Dani Carvajal (31) would be rested for Wednesday’s game, but said the right back would likely be available for their LaLiga clash at Atletico Madrid on Sunday.

“Carvajal has a strain and we wanted to rest him to avoid problems,” Ancelotti said. “He feels good and we don’t think it’s anything serious, so hopefully he’ll be back soon.

“As things stand today, he has a chance of playing on Sunday. The player’s general condition is pretty good. Lucas Vazquez (32) will play in place of Carvajal (against the Union).”

Group F deemed group of death in Champions League draw

The draw for the 2023-24 Champions League group stage has been announced, and it presents some intriguing matchups.

Defending champions Manchester City will face RB Leipzig once again, a team they convincingly defeated 8-1 on aggregate in the round of 16 last season.

Joining City in Group G are Crvena Zvezda and Young Boys, making it a relatively favorable draw for the Treble winners.

In contrast, Newcastle United has been handed a challenging group. They are set to take on football giants Paris Saint-Germain, Borussia Dortmund, and AC Milan in Group F.

Eddie Howe’s squad faces tough competition, but they can count on the passionate St James’ Park supporters to create a fortress atmosphere when some of Europe’s top clubs visit.

In other matchups, fans will witness Harry Kane‘s return to England as Bayern Munich squares off against Manchester United in Group A. The England captain will be eager to find the net against FC Copenhagen and Galatasaray as well.

Arsenal’s highly anticipated return to the Champions League promises to be thrilling in Group B. The Gunners will face stiff competition from Europa League champions Sevilla, PSV Eindhoven, and Ligue 1 side Lens.

Last season’s finalists, Inter Milan, have the task of overcoming Benfica in Group D, while Spanish giants Real Madrid will clash with Napoli in Group C.

Scottish champions Celtic face a challenging start to their campaign, locking horns with Feyenoord, Atletico Madrid, and Lazio. Meanwhile, LaLiga holders Barcelona must navigate their way past Porto, Shakhtar Donetsk, and Antwerp in Group H.

  • Ryan Bertrand and Manchester United in talks for a free transfer

Ryan Bertrand and Manchester United in talks for a free transfer

Manchester United are thinking about signing Ryan Bertrand for free, as per reports.

Erik ten Hag has a difficult decision to make at the position of left-back because both Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia are injured.

Diogo Dalot is expected to temporarily fill in, while Alvaro Fernandez is also available, although the 20-year-old has not played for United before in a professional game.

According to the Daily Express, Manchester United are thinking about getting a temporary player to fix their problem at left-back position, and they have their eye on Bertrand.

The person is 34 years old and has won the Champions League, FA Cup, and Europa League with Chelsea. They recently left Leicester City and are now available to join a new team without any transfer fees.

The report says that United have started talking to Bertrand’s agents about possibly signing him to play at Old Trafford.

During an interview, Ten Hag was asked if they plan on getting a new left-back before the transfer window closes. He replied that if there are good chances available, then they would consider it.

We need to find the correct person for the role. If not, we will have to handle the current team.

‘Before the season started, we thought about different possibilities and made plans for our transfers. If the situation we’re facing now happened, we already have a solution. ‘

  • Reece James, captain of Chelsea, set back by another injury

Reece James, captain of Chelsea, set back by another injury

Chelsea is awaiting the scan results on club captain Reece James, who recently sustained a hamstring injury.

Following Cesar Azpilicueta’s departure from the team in the summer, the England international was named the team’s new captain earlier this month.

Last Sunday’s 1-1 tie with Liverpool saw James take the armband off due to “tiredness,” according to manager Mauricio Pochettino, but he later put it back on.

Sky Italy reports that additional tests have identified a hamstring strain, and Chelsea must now wait in suspense to learn the full degree of the harm.

The 23-year-old was limited to 24 games last season and did not participate in the World Cup because of a knee injury he suffered during a Champions League victory against Milan almost a year ago.

Malo Gusto stepped in for James during the final minutes of the match against Liverpool, and Pochettino expects the summer purchase from Lyon to fill in against West Ham on Sunday as he looks to earn his first competitive victory.

Meanwhile, Chelsea has grudgingly agreed to sell Lewis Hall after Newcastle made a £28 million offer.

The kid had an impressive breakthrough last season, and while the Blues had no intention of offloading one of their most promising young players at the beginning of the summer, the offer—even though it came from a Premier League rival—has been deemed too good to refuse.

In addition, Michael Olise’s decision to sign a new four-year contract with Crystal Palace has derailed Pochettino’s efforts to sign him from the Eagles.

Chelsea expected to close a deal fast and this week activated the 21-year-old’s £35 million release clause.

However, Palace, incensed by Chelsea’s offer, has persuaded the former Reading star to commit his near future to the team and take the lead in Selhurst Park’s post-Wilfried Zaha era.

  • 22-year-old man fatally stabbed in a clash between fans of AEK Athens and Dinamo Zagreb ahead of Champions League qualifies

22-year-old man fatally stabbed in a clash between fans of AEK Athens and Dinamo Zagreb ahead of Champions League qualifies

A fatal stabbing incident occurred as a brawl erupted between supporters of AEK Athens and Dinamo Zagreb prior to their Champions League qualifier, resulting in the death of a 22-year-old man, as confirmed by the police.

Tragedy struck as Greek football enthusiasts clashed with fans of Dinamo Zagreb, leading to the demise of one individual and leaving six others injured.

The confrontation transpired ahead of the Champions League third-qualifying round game between the two clubs on Monday evening.

According to The Times of Malta, the 22-year-old victim was transported from the Nea Filadelfeia stadium, located on the outskirts of Athens, to a nearby hospital, where he ultimately passed away.

Disturbingly violent clashes unfolded among the rival factions of supporters in the build-up to the Champions League match, scheduled to commence on Tuesday evening. In light of the situation, law enforcement reported that 83 individuals were apprehended subsequent to the incident.

Greek police said: “A serious incident took place outside the Nea Filadelfeia stadium. A young Greek man was stabbed to death, and six other injured people are in the hospital.”

Dinamo Zagreb have added in an official statement: “GNK Dinamo strongly condemns the riots that took place last night in Athens, in which, according to the reports of the Greek police and Greek and Croatian media, rioters from Croatia were involved in an incident with fans of the Greek football club AEK.

“Such events are not in line with the values and ethics we promote as a club and community. We express our deep concern over this incident. Unfortunately, one person lost his life during the riots. GNK Dinamo would like to express its sincere condolences to the family of the deceased.

“Once again, we remind and invite all Dinamo fans not to travel to the match in Greece, considering that UEFA, in agreement with the police, decided that both matches will be played without visiting fans.

“GNK Dinamo remains committed to creating an environment in which love for sport is expressed in a positive way, through togetherness, respect, and cooperation.”

In 2022, the Greek authorities raised the upper limit for penalties related to fan violence from six months to five years, prompted by another fatal stabbing incident that occurred during a football match.

Alkis Kampanos, a 19-year-old, lost his life in February 2022 during a clash involving fans of Aris Thessaloniki and PAOK.

Recent events saw seven individuals convicted of his murder last month, receive life sentences. Additionally, five others were handed sentences exceeding 19 years due to their involvement.

Disturbingly, this marked the third fatality stemming from fan violence within a span of three years, all taking place in Thessaloniki.

  • Aaron Ramsdale assesses a new Arsenal acquisition, Kai Havertz

Aaron Ramsdale assesses a new Arsenal acquisition, Kai Havertz

Kai Havertz was dubbed a “very good signing” by Aaron Ramsdale, who also praised the German’s “striking” array of abilities while playing for Chelsea.

After signing a £65 million contract with Arsenal, Havertz has moved from Stamford Bridge to the Emirates Stadium.

The 24-year-old, who spent three years at Chelsea and scored the winner in the 2021 Champions League final, has signed a five-year contract at Arsenal.

Despite his Champions League final heroics, Havertz endured a underwhelming spell in west London, scoring 19 goals in 91 Premier League appearances following a £72m move from Bayer Leverkusen.

Assessing Arsenal’s deal for Havertz, Ramsdale told Kicker: ‘It’s a very good signing.

‘Kai already has a lot of experience, he was captain in Leverkusen when he was very young. He’s an international player, has won the Champions League and scored in important games.

‘He can play in different positions, which will help the team. He’s also a tall boy, so he can also help with set-piece situations, which shouldn’t be underestimated in modern football.’

Asked what he made of Havertz during his spell at Chelsea, England goalkeeper Ramsdale added: ‘Above all, it was striking how different he can play. He’s so good with the ball at his feet but at the same time he can be a target player.

‘As his opponent, you could never really rest against him because he is constantly looking for free space.

‘Also, he’s very generous on the ball and likes to use the wingers or players who move up from midfield. Hopefully we will see all of these qualities next season.’

Havertz joins an Arsenal team that finished second in the Premier League last season and qualified for the Champions League following a six-year absence.

The Gunners were chasing a first league title since 2004 but fell short as Manchester City won the Premier League for the third year in a row.

‘We were so close but just didn’t make it in the end,’ Ramsdale said of Arsenal’s title challenge. ‘But now we have experience of being in that kind of situation and hopefully we’ll go one better next season.

‘We’re looking to strengthen the squad once again with a view to attacking all competitions, including the Champions League.

‘It’s difficult when you’re up against a team that wins the treble. But we can only look at ourselves.

‘There were a few games that slipped out of our hands that we should have won. But you never win on the first try.’
