Galamsey scandal: Another accused speaks up

Charles Nii Teiko Tagoe, a presidential staffer has reacted to claims leveled against him in the IMCIM report authored by Prof Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng.

He has denied complicity in illegal small-scale mining (galamsey) after he was mentioned as part of Jubilee House staff engaged in galamsey.

Teiko and others were mentioned in the 2021 report by the former minister for Science, Technology and Innovation Prof Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng, which report was recently leaked to the media.

A number of people mentioned in the report have rejected the contents of the report in whole or partially with others demanding a retraction of the allegations against them.

In his case, Teiko Tagoe issued an April 21, 2023 statement in which he denied having anything to do with galamsey.

He, however, disclosed the one occasion on which he contacted the minister who was then the chairman of government’s anti-galamsey committee, the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Illegal Mining (IMCIM).

“Let me state categorically that I have no involvement in galamsey,” his statement read.

It continued: “In 2019, I spoke to Prof. Frimpong-Boateng regarding an excavator being transported on a low-bed vehicle on a highway. He requested details, and I provided the information. However, I did not follow up on the request, and I have no knowledge of what happened with the excavator.

“It is unfortunate that Prof. Frimpong-Boateng would make comments about me in his report. I want to make it clear that I have nothing to do with illegal mining,” the statement added.

    His full statement is below:

    My fellow Ghanaians,
I wish to address recent media reports attempting to link me to illegal small-scale mining activities, popularly known as galamsey. These reports are based on a statement made by Prof. Frimpong-Boateng, the former Chairman of the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Illegal Mining.

Let me state categorically that I have no involvement in galamsey. In 2019, I spoke to Prof. Frimpong-Boateng regarding an excavator being transported on a low-bed vehicle on a highway. He requested details, and I provided the information. However, I did not follow up on the request, and I have no knowledge of what happened with the excavator.

It is unfortunate that Prof. Frimpong-Boateng would make comments about me in his report. I want to make it clear that I have nothing to do with illegal mining. I urge the media and the public to disregard the portions of the report that pertain to me and treat it with the contempt it deserves.

I believe in the rule of law, and I am committed to supporting efforts to clamp down on illegal mining activities in the country. I remain committed to the development of Ghana and the well-being of its citizens.

    Thank you.

  • Attempt by presidential staffer to mock Mahama backfires as social media users remind him of Akufo-Addo’s plagiarism

A staff member at the president’s office attempted to use Facebook to accuse former president John Dramani Mahama of plagiarizing.

When John Mahama gave a speech on the current economic difficulties facing Ghana under the Akufo-Addo administration on Thursday, October 27, 2022, Charles Nii Teiko Tagoe accused him of plagiarizing. He made the accusation on his Facebook page.

Charles Tagoe claimed on his Facebook page that former president Mahama had copied a line from American playwright and screenwriter Aaron Benjamin Sorkin.

His attempt however was met with a barrage of comments reminding him of President Akufo-Addo’s history when it comes to the issue of plagiarism.

“You should be the last person to talk about plagiarism. Nana Addo shameless [SIC] plagiarized a full speech on his first day in office,” Lingani Goodman commented under the presidential staffer’s post.

Other commenters sought to accuse the presidential staffer of engaging in a fallacy of diversion.

“You have been offered free and pragmatic solutions to help you guys bring us from this mess you have caused, unfortunately, that is not where your interest is, but rather the usual jokes. I’m not surprised though,” Tony Goodman also wrote under the post.

The first of such accusations was levelled against President Akufo-Addo when he delivered his inaugural address on January 7, 2017.

Mr Mahama in his address spoke about the current economic hardship in the country and made various proposals that he believes the government need to adopt to turn the situation around.

  • Alleged US$10k trip to US: Presidential staffer insults Facebook user

Presidential staffer Charles Nii Teiko Tagoe has responded harshly to a Facebook user who accosted him over his alleged deportation from the United States of America in mid-September.

Tagoe had on October 4, 2022, made a routine post about the government’s intervention in the health sector when the user by the name of Mo Barhama jumped into the comment section with his ‘attack.’

“The $10000 you wasted on a plane ticket only to get deported could have been put to good use in this regard,” he responded to Tagoe’s post which was an artwork with a child and a caption that read: “The government through the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection has developed a strategic framework to end child marriage in Ghana,”

A clearly unenthused staffer responded: “Mo Barhama I just went through your pictures and I won’t say anything again. Kwasiaaaaa saaa no. Internet has worried us paaaaa.”

An unrepentant Mo Barhama will not back down, going ahead to share the purported boarding pass of Tagoe’s trip and a cedi conversion of US$10,000 while responding to other commenters who were defending the presidential staffer.

One such defender by the name of IK Bonney was then asked by the presidential staffer to stop minding Barhama.

“IK Bonney You have time to waste on this idiot? You paaaa. Hunger will continue to kill idiots like that. Don’t waste time and energy,” Tagoe replied.

Charles Nii Teiko Tagoe was reported by The Herald Newspaper to have been deported from the United States in mid-September, hours after he arrived in the country.
