  • Man Utd vow to ‘educate fans’ following homophobic chants at Chelsea

Manchester United acknowledged some supporters engaged in homophobic chanting during Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Chelsea, subsequently vowing to work with fan groups to curb such incidents.

The abuse directed towards Chelsea at Stamford Bridge occurred on the first day of Premier League football dedicating itself to Stonewall’s Rainbow Laces campaign this season.

The Premier League confirmed during the week that every top-flight fixture between October 22 and 30 was to celebrate the LGBTQ+ inclusion initiative, with captains wearing rainbow-themed armbands.

United had also launched their own One Love campaign this weekend as they looked to “demonstrate the club’s unity and allyship with LGBTQ+ groups”.

But after Chelsea condemned the offending chants on Sunday, United pledged their continued support to fighting homophobia.

The statement read: “Homophobia, like all forms of discrimination, has no place in football. Manchester United is proud of our diverse fan base and the work we have done to reduce instances like we sadly heard at Stamford Bridge.

“We will continue to campaign for inclusivity and to tackle discriminatory abuse whether inside stadiums or online.

“This includes working with fan groups to educate fans on the offence which discriminatory language causes.”

  • Kepa finally fulfilling his promise under Potter

Kepa Arrizabalaga’s time as Chelsea’s No1 appeared to be over — but the Spaniard has emerged from the blue to win back his starting spot.

Edouard Mendy had been the West Londoners’ first-choice stopper under Thomas Tuchel, with the former Athletic Bilbao man consigned to the role of understudy.

But Graham Potter’s appointment coincided with an injury to Mendy and Kepa has been afforded a fresh chance between the sticks.

Ahead of Chelsea’s clash with Manchester United this afternoon, we take a look at how the Spaniard has begun restoring his reputation at Stamford Bridge.

    Rollercoaster ride

Kepa was signed for £72million in the summer of 2018 — a world-record fee for a goalkeeper.

However, the Spaniard failed to live up to expectations in SW6, making a plethora of mistakes and notably refusing to come off ahead of a penalty shootout in the Carabao Cup final against Manchester City in 2019 — which Chelsea lost.

In September 2020, Mendy was brought in from Rennes to replace Kepa and it seemed to be only a matter of time until the 11-cap international left the club.

But an injury to Mendy handed the 28-year-old a chance and he has started every one of Chelsea’s Champions League games this season, as well as the last four in the Premier League.

It appears Kepa has — at least for now — convinced Potter that he deserves to be the Blues’ No1 once more, with Mendy fit again but on the bench.

    Hero against Villans

Kepa has certainly been repaying his manager’s faith — not least against Aston Villa last weekend when he made a number of sensational saves to help secure a 2-0 victory.

After that game, Potter was understandably effusive about his goalkeeper’s qualities.

He said: “It was a world-class performance [from Kepa], especially in the first half.

“I’m really pleased for him, he has had a tough period for us at times but he contributed to the game.

“He is contributing to us with clean sheets and how we’re trying to play and the environment around the place.

“I’ve got to say, all three goalkeepers we’ve had here have been really, really good in that regard — supporting each other, providing good competition and that picks everybody’s level up and Kepa has found a fantastic level today.

“He made some brilliant saves that have kept us in the game and allowed us to win the points, so [I’m] really pleased for him.”

The former Brighton boss will have been equally delighted with Kepa’s display against Brentford in midweek.

    Sweeper Kepa

An area in which Kepa has been notably proficient this season is coming off his line to deal with danger.

In the Champions League, only Tottenham’s Hugo Lloris has made more keeper sweeper regains (five) than his four.

Additionally, Kepa ranks inside the top 10 goalkeepers in the competition for possessions won in the defensive third (four) and has even won possession in the middle third twice — more than any other player in his position.

Furthermore, he is one of a select group of stoppers in the Champions League to have registered an interception or a headed clearance — demonstrating his ability to rush out and sweep up danger behind his defenders.

    Keeping steady

Kepa Arrizabalaga has conceded just twice in the Champions League so far this season
Kepa Arrizabalaga has conceded just twice in the Champions League so far this season

Kepa also appears to have ironed out some of the errors in his game.

The Ondarroa native had a propensity to let in soft goals early on in his Chelsea career — but there has been no sign of that so far this term.

In his four Champions League appearances so far, he has not made a single error leading to a shot or a goal and has not conceded from outside the box either, saving three such attempts.

    Playmaking pedigree?

Kepa Arrizabalaga is not heavily involved in Chelsea's build-up from deep
Kepa Arrizabalaga is not heavily involved in Chelsea’s build-up from deep

Despite his many qualities, Kepa does not possess the same ability with his feet as goalkeepers like Ederson or Alisson.

He has attempted just 98 passes in the Champions League this term, completing only 69 and taking just 121 touches.

Kepa ranks outside the top 20 goalkeepers in all three of those metrics and is evidently not heavily utilised in Chelsea’s build-up.

But that will not be too much of a concern for Potter if he continues to turn in the kind of reliable performances we have witnessed this season.

  • James ‘devastated’ by injury but will ‘do everything’ to win World Cup race

Reece James has described the knee injury that threatens to rule him out of the World Cup as “devastating”, but says he will do everything in his power to feature in Qatar.

The right-back sustained the injury in Chelsea’s Champions League win at Milan last week, and was ruled out for eight weeks after seeing a specialist.

If James were to miss the tournament, it would represent a severe blow for England manager Gareth Southgate, who is facing the prospect of a selection crisis on the right of his defence.

Manchester City’s Kyle Walker is also battling to be fit after suffering an abdominal injury earlier this month, while Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold has come under fire for his recent performances.

However, Chelsea boss Graham Potter said last week that James would “fight” to return in time for the tournament, and the defender has now made a similar pledge.

“It’s obviously devastating and you know the World Cup is only a month away,” James said on his YouTube channel. “As a kid, growing up, I always wanted to go and this is my first opportunity.

“I’ll do everything I can to try to be there, but I’m obviously devastated. Just [the] injury came at the wrong time. But every day, we need to be grateful and thankful.

“I’ll keep you updated with what’s happening on a day-to-day basis, and I’ll touch base soon.”

England begin their World Cup campaign in less than a month’s time, facing Iran in their Group B opener on November 21.

  • Chelsea co-owner claims Super League desire limited to ‘vocal’ Spanish giants

Chelsea co-owner Behdad Eghbali does not believe many clubs are interested in a revival of the Super League, despite a new proposal for the competition being in development.

The Super League’s launch failed in spectacular fashion last year, with nine of the 12 founding clubs withdrawing in the face of fan, media and player pressure.

While all six English members quickly reversed their support for the competition, Spanish giants Barcelona and Real Madrid, as well as Juventus, remain committed to the project.

Media executive Bernd Reichart has been recruited to head up plans for a relaunch, and said on Wednesday: “Even fans will have a lot of sympathy for the idea”.

However, Eghbali – part of the Todd Boehly-led consortium which acquired Chelsea earlier this year, says “vocal” duo Barca and Madrid are those most interested.

“I think the sport needs more premium high-quality matches and content, but it doesn’t have to be a Super League,” Eghbali said at an event in New York on Wednesday.

“Todd went there on an All-Star Game, the baseball talent competition or draft generates £200million to £300million of revenue on a Monday or Tuesday each year, none of that exists in the English Premier League.

“Could there be a Premier League versus Serie A game? Could you see pre-season matches producing more premium content on the pitch? You could.

“But structurally, given how botched that episode was, does anybody have any appetite for something like that? A couple of teams in Spain do and they are vocal about it, but everyone else doesn’t want to go there anymore.”

Reichart, however, claims the Super League project is “very alive”, though he was keen to stress the ability to qualify through sporting merit must exist in any reworked format.

“[The Super League is] very alive, there are some who want to declare that it is dead, but if they say it a lot, there is much to suspect,” he told Cadena SER on Wednesday.

“There are clubs in Europe that surely share the vision of Juventus, Real Madrid and Barcelona, and now they have the opportunity to contribute what they think.

“It is a long road, but we have the humility to do it step by step, but without pause. The hand is extended to all the members of European football, we want to be inclusive.

“The concept of a fixed position is not something that we are currently contemplating. The design of the format ultimately has to be the result of dialogue, but we don’t have a predefined format, the dialogue we propose is real and that’s why I don’t want to speculate on how it will definitely be. Sporting merit will be applied to all members of that Super League.”

  • Kante out of World Cup with hamstring injury, Chelsea confirm

N’Golo Kante will miss France’s World Cup campaign after undergoing an operation on his hamstring, Chelsea have confirmed.

Kante suffered the injury in his Chelsea’s 2-2 home draw with Tottenham in August and has not featured for club or country since.

Chelsea have now established Kante will play no part in France’s defence of their World Cup crown, which starts with their opening group game against Australia on November 22.

In a statement on the club website, Chelsea said: “N’Golo Kante has undergone an operation on his hamstring injury.

“The midfielder visited a specialist with the club’s medical department to explore the options for his rehabilitation approach and it was mutually agreed for N’Golo to have surgery to repair the damage.

“Following a successful operation, N’Golo is now expected to be sidelined for four months.”

Kante was a key member of the France side that won the 2018 World Cup, playing a part in all seven games as Les Bleus lifted the biggest prize in international football for the second time.

Reece James, Kante’s Chelsea team-mate, faces a race against time to make England’s squad for the tournament after suffering a knee injury against Milan.

  • Potter: No talks over cutting short Zakaria’s Chelsea loan spell

Chelsea boss Graham Potter has rubbished reports that Denis Zakaria’s loan spell could be cut short in January.

Zakaria was signed by previous head coach Thomas Tuchel from Juventus on a season-long loan deal just before the transfer window closed at the start of September.

The midfielder is yet to make his debut for the London club and has only been a substitute on one occasion in the Premier League.

It has been reported that the Switzerland international could be on his way back to Juve when the next transfer window opens, but that is news to Potter.

He said: “There’s no decision been made at all on that. Denis has been in the group, he’s been training well.

“He’s ready to help the team, obviously there’s competition for places in that area, but there’s no talk of anything.

“He’s an important member of the team, he’s been patient and he’s trying to help the team from the side at the moment and waiting for his chance.”

Chelsea will make the short trip for a derby at Brentford on Wednesday in search of a sixth consecutive victory and looking for a fifth clean sheet in a row.

It has been a great start to head coach Potter’s tenure, with his side fourth in the Premier League and on course to qualify for the Champions League round of 16.

Mason Mount’s double secured a 2-0 win at Aston Villa on Sunday and Potter says he is bemused over why there appears to be mixed opinions on the England midfielder’s credentials.

He said: “It’s a joy [to work with Mount], he’s a fantastic person. He loves to play football, loves the club here. It’s surprising I get some questions like there’s some sort of mixed opinion on Mason, I find that strange.

“Especially from the outside and then when you start to work with him, you just think he’s got everything you need to be a top, top player. He’s got a great attitude, understands spaces, connects, can execute, assists, scores goals. He’s a top player.”

Potter revealed Chelsea have no new injuries to contend with ahead of their clash with the Bees, allaying concerns Thiago Silva could be sidelined with a hamstring injury.

  • Jess Carter: Chelsea defender to remain at club until 2025

Chelsea defender Jess Carter has signed a contract extension that will keep her at the club until 2025.

Since joining Chelsea in 2018, the 24-year-old has won the Women’s Super League three times.

Carter has also helped Emma Hayes’ side to win the FA Cup, Continental Cup, and Community Shield.

“I’m looking forward to continuing my development with the team, helping them to become even more successful,” the England international said.

The player is closing in on 100 appearances for Chelsea and was a part of the Lionesses squad which won the European Championship this summer.

General manager Paul Green added: “She had an outstanding 2021-22 season for both club and country and we want to reward her for those achievements.

“We’re really happy with the way she’s been developing over the last couple of seasons and look forward to seeing that continue in the upcoming years.”

  • Transfer Talk: Red Devils join Chelsea in Leao race

Manchester United have joined Chelsea in the race for AC Milan forward Rafael Leao.

The Portugal international, 23, has 18 months left on his current contract at the San Siro and has rejected the offer of a new five-year deal.

United are alert to the situation and are now ready to compete for Leao’s signature with Premier League rivals and long-term admirers Chelsea, according to the The Daily Star.

The Red Devils have had scouts watching the Serie A star in recent months, including during Milan’s back-to-back Champions League defeats against the Blues.

The Almada native is one of the finest talents in the Italian top flight, having netted four goals and provided five assists in nine league appearances so far this term.

He was also named Serie A’s Player of the Season in 2021-22, after bagging 11 goals to help the Rossoneri clinch the Scudetto.

Stefano Pioli’s men are reported to value their prized asset at a lofty £100million and hope United’s interest will spark a bidding war between the Premier League heavyweights.

With 11-cap international Leao set to play a starring role for Portugal at the World Cup, a strong performance in Qatar could see more suitors enter the race.

  • James set to miss World Cup with knee injury

England defender Reece James looks set to miss the World Cup as Chelsea confirm he is expected to be out for at least eight weeks with a knee injury.

The 22-year-old right-back sustained the injury in Chelsea’s 2-0 win at AC Milan in the Champions League on Tuesday.

The World Cup starts in just over five weeks, on 20 November, in Qatar.

  • Chelsea’s James to see specialist on knee injury amid World Cup fears

Reece James is set to see a specialist this weekend to assess the injury he suffered in Chelsea’s midweek victory over Milan, amid reports he could miss the upcoming World Cup.

James was forced off in the victory at San Siro and the Daily Mail has subsequently reported he sustained ligament damage, which could rule him out for between six and eight weeks.

Chelsea boss Graham Potter was questioned on James’ situation ahead of Sunday’s meeting with Aston Villa, but was unable to provide a definitive timeframe for the defender’s recovery.

“Reece is due to see a specialist over the weekend so until we get that information there’s not too much I can add. We will wait and see,” Potter said in Friday’s news conference.

“There’s discomfort so we just need to check and see a specialist.

“When we spoke yesterday he didn’t feel so bad, but you need to get things checked and see the way forward.”

Any long-term absence for James would represent a severe blow for Gareth Southgate’s England, particularly with fellow right-backs Trent Alexander-Arnold and Kyle Walker also battling injuries.

Chelsea will also be without N’Golo Kante and Wesley Fofana for Sunday’s clash against Villa, and Potter provided an update on the pair.

“Kante is due to see a consultant at the weekend. It’s a setback and it’s not good news. But at this stage, I can’t give you anything more,” he added.

“Fofana is progressing where he was. I don’t think we’ll see him before the World Cup.”

  • Chelsea boss Potter backs under-fire Gerrard

Chelsea head coach Graham Potter has given his backing to Steven Gerrard following a poor start to the season for Aston Villa.

Villa have won just two of their opening nine Premier League matches, sitting just three points above the relegation zone with only Wolves having scoring fewer than their goal tally of seven.

That has resulted in boss Gerrard coming under pressure, with speculation that Villa could move on from the former Liverpool captain if results do not improve.

Potter has made it clear that the situation can change swiftly, adding that there is “always somebody under pressure” in England’s top flight.

“The margins are very small in the Premier League – I’m sure Steven will want to improve their results,” he said ahead of Chelsea’s trip to Villa on Sunday.

“If they had beaten Forest they would have gone above Liverpool so that shows you how quick things change.

“There’s always somebody under pressure in the Premier League and at the moment it’s Steven.”

Chelsea’s axing of Thomas Tuchel and appointment of Potter has resulted in a quick upturn in form, with the Blues unbeaten in his five games in charge and enjoying a four-match winning streak.

That has come despite a “surreal” start to Potter’s stint at Stamford Bridge and the former Brighton and Hove Albion boss is adamant there is still work to do.

He added: “From the outside results are good, there are always things you can improve, but I can’t sit here and complain about anything, with the results we’ve had.

“It was a really surreal start with the Queen’s death, games being called off, not really knowing the players but I’ve got to credit the players – they have been really open and it has gone well.

“We haven’t played that many games in the league, there are so many games to go.”

  • Ghanaian winger Callum Hudson-Odoi could leave Chelsea on permanent basis next summer

English-born Ghanaian Callum Hudson-Odoi could leave Chelsea on a permanent deal at the end of the season, according to reporter Iomie Stanley.

Odoi, who is being chased by Ghana FA over nationality switch is currently on loan at Bayer Leverkusen in search of playing time.

Since joining the club in the summer, he has made seven starts for the Bundesliga side and is looking like he in enjoying his time away from Stamford Bridge.

Despite reports that Chelsea are keen to keep Callum Hudson-Odoi for the foreseeable future, Stanley claims that the winger may seek a permanent move away from the club.

He told IcFootballnews: “From what I hear, because of his age and the fact that he can play in more than one position, Chelsea really don’t want to let Hudson-Odoi go anywhere.”

“However – the winger knows that he may struggle for game time if he goes back to Stamford Bridge given all the players that Graham Potter will be looking to sign in the coming windows.”

“He has no intention of sitting on the bench – watching his career pass him by and he knows that an impressive season in the Bundesliga will alert a number of clubs to a possible deal at the end of the season.”

“Part of him may feel like he can win back his place in that Chelsea side – could be a massive part of the plans under Potter – but part of him knows that he would get better opportunities if he left Chelsea.”

“So if the opportunity arises – then I can easily see Hudson-Odoi leaving the club on a more permanent basis.”

  • Chelsea’s Hayes to take time away after surgery

Chelsea manager Emma Hayes has encouraged fans to make more noise at games while she watches from home following surgery

Chelsea boss Emma Hayes will take time away from the club as she recovers from an emergency hysterectomy.

Hayes, 45, revealed she had surgery last week as part of her ongoing battle with endometriosis.

In a statement, five-time WSL winner Hayes told fans she would “need time and patience to return to full health”.

“I know you’ll respect that my health comes first and at this time I’ve got to prioritise what I need to do for me,” Hayes said.

Assistant manager Denise Reddy will take charge of the reigning Women’s Super League champions in Hayes’ absence, with general manager Paul Green carrying out media duties.

A club statement said: “Everybody at Chelsea would like to wish Emma a speedy recovery and we will continue to support her during this time.”

  • Tomori’s red card a surprise to Mount after Chelsea dispatch Milan

Fikayo Tomori was unlucky to be sent off and concede a penalty during Milan’s Champions League defeat to Chelsea, so says Mason Mount.

The Milan centre-back, a former Chelsea player, was given an 18th-minute red card after he was adjudged to have pulled Mount’s shirt in the penalty box as the midfielder went through on goal.

Jorginho converted the penalty before Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s 34th-minute strike wrapped up a comfortable 2-0 win for the Blues in Group E.

Mount, however, believes Chelsea were fortunate.

In an interview with Chelsea’s official website, Mount said: “I was probably a bit surprised [with the decision] at the time because I’ve still gone through and had a shot.

“I felt him [Tomori] trying to pull me back but I was running to goal so I wasn’t going to go down. I carried on going, didn’t score and then obviously the ref blew up and gave a pen straight away.”

Tomori and Mount are both products of Chelsea’s academy. The duo both spent time on loan at Derby County, under Frank Lampard, in the 2018-19 campaign and went on to play together for the Blues first team before the defender departed for Milan in 2021, helping the Rossoneri win the Serie A title last season.

“He’s obviously my mate, I’ve known Fik for a very long time, and I felt for him in that situation, I was gutted for him. I don’t think it was a sending-off,” Mount added.

“You still want to be playing 11 v 11 and going at it with two good teams, so it maybe ruined the game a bit. It was massive for us and we obviously wanted to win the game, which we did,” he added.

Tuesday’s game was poignant for striker Aubameyang, who played at San Siro for the first time. His half-brothers Willy and Catilina both played for Milan.

On Instagram, Aubameyang said: “Big dream achieved!! I used to come to this stadium to see my brothers playing and never had the chance to play at San Siro myself, now it’s done.”

  • James hopeful injury is ‘not a bad one’ with World Cup on horizon

Reece James is hopeful that an injury sustained during Chelsea’s 2-0 Champions League victory against AC Milan is “not a bad one”, with the World Cup on the horizon.

After an awkward landing, the 22-year-old England international had to be brought off the pitch on the hour mark – raising further concerns for the Three Lions ahead of the tournament in Qatar, after Trent Alexander-Arnold picked up a knock in Liverpool’s defeat to Arsenal on Sunday.

James took to social media to address the worries about his injury and, while unable to offer any decisive updates, shared hope that he will not be sidelined for an extensive period.

He said: “Fingers crossed it’s not a bad one. Love for all the messages, I appreciate you all.”

Graham Potter was unsure as to the extent of James’ injury, stating he was unable to provide an outlook until further tests are done this week.

“We’re hoping Reece will be OK. It will be 24, 48 hours to find out, so it’s too early to give you anything more than that,” he said in his post-match press conference.

The Blues’ win marked an end to a run of seven winless away trips to Italian teams in the Champions League, a record that stretched back to 2003, and leaves Chelsea sat top of Group E with fixtures against RB Salzburg and Dinamo Zagreb to come.

Potter added: “To come here and win is certainly not easy, that is for sure. Credit to the players. They were really good, I thought.”

Chelsea travel to face Aston Villa in the Premier League on Sunday, beginning a sequence of three league games in six days with fixtures against Brentford and Manchester United on the horizon.

  • Chelsea climb to Group E summit after Tomori red

Chelsea claimed their first Champions League win in Italy for 19 years by defeating 10-man Milan 2-0 at San Siro to move to the top of Group E.

A 4-0 victory over Lazio in November 2003 had represented the Blues’ last win on Italian soil in Europe’s elite club competition, but this was similarly routine following a contentious Fikayo Tomori red card.

Jorginho’s penalty gave the visitors a 21st-minute lead after former Chelsea defender Tomori was dismissed for fouling Mason Mount in the box.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang then doubled the lead before half-time, with that enough to send Graham Potter’s side to the pool summit following Salzburg’s 1-1 draw with Dinamo Zagreb.

Milan were reduced to 10 men in the 18th minute when Tomori was controversially shown a straight red after tangling with Mount in the box when the Chelsea man was through on goal. Jorginho then calmly sent Ciprian Tatarusanu the wrong way from the penalty spot.

Olivier Giroud, another former Chelsea player, squandered a glorious opportunity to equalise for Milan in the 27th minute, heading Brahim Diaz’s inviting cross wide from eight yards out.

And the Rossoneri were to rue their wastefulness as Chelsea doubled their lead seven minutes later. As he had in a 3-0 win at Stamford Bridge six days earlier, Aubameyang netted the second with a clinical finish from Mount’s neat lay-off.

Substitute Conor Gallagher went close to adding a third within four minutes of the restart but could only find the side-netting, while Aubameyang drew smart reflexes from Tatarusanu.

As Sergino Dest fired over at the other end and the Rossoneri fell to a fifth home defeat in six Champions League games against English opposition, the only dampener for Chelsea was an injury to England right-back Reece James.

What does it mean? Chelsea continue resurgence under Potter

Chelsea remain unbeaten in five matches under Potter, with four successive wins including clean sheets in each of the last three.

Milan, who themselves could have moved to the top of the standings, will be glad to see the back of the Blues, against whom they are without a win in six meetings after suffering consecutive defeats in this fixture for the first time.

    Silva the centurion

Thiago Silva produced a typically assured performance at the heart of the Chelsea defence, with a game-high six clearances helping earn a clean sheet against his former club, where he spent three seasons.

The veteran centre-half also on Tuesday became the fifth Brazilian to make 100 Champions League appearances after Roberto Carlos (120), Dani Alves (111), Fernandinho (103) and Marcelo (102).

    Nightmare reunion for Tomori

Tomori endured another day to forget against Chelsea, having been criticised for his role in a one-sided result at Stamford Bridge last week.

Worse was to come as Tomori got caught the wrong side of Mount, even if the Chelsea man stayed on his feet and got a shot away. The decision provoked debate and left Tomori’s team-mates playing catch-up.

    What’s next?

Both sides are on their travels when they return to league action this weekend. Chelsea aim to build on their momentum in the Premier League when they travel to Aston Villa, while Milan head to Verona in Serie A.

  • Reece James injury blow mars Chelsea’s Champions League win over AC Milan

Reece James handed England a World Cup injury scare as Chelsea went top of Champions League Group E with a 2-0 win over 10-man AC Milan.

James cut a dejected figure when trudging off midway through the second half with an apparent leg problem, adding to both Chelsea and England’s injury concerns.

Jorginho’s penalty and a fine Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang finish sealed Chelsea’s fourth win in a row in all competitions under Graham Potter.

Former Blues defender Fikayo Tomori endured a night to forget at the San Siro with an 18th-minute red card that put his old club in the driving seat.

England arguably boast the most strength at right-back in world football, but manager Gareth Southgate’s options for Qatar are appearing more limited by the day.

Manchester City’s Kyle Walker is rated only 50-50 to make the World Cup that starts on November 20 after groin surgery.

Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold has an ankle problem, and now James has added to those worries.

Newcastle’s Kieran Trippier would seem the national side’s only fit established right-back at this moment, though club and country will hope for good news on James.

Tomori revealed his latent fury from Milan’s 3-0 defeat at Stamford Bridge in the build-up to this rematch.

If the 24-year-old came into the contest grinding his teeth, he left the San Siro pitch prematurely with steam coming out of his ears.

Tomori raged at referee Daniel Siebert, fourth official Daniel Schlager and a host of innocent bystanders too, refusing to leave the pitch after being sent off.

The Canada-born centre-back impeded Mason Mount in the area and suffered the full consequences.

As the last man Tomori could ultimately have few complaints, even if elements of the foul seemed soft.

Jorginho shut out the deafening cat-calls and ignored lasers shined into his eyes to convert the spot-kick after Tomori had eventually, and reluctantly, exited stage vexed.

The sending-off naturally changed the game, handing the Blues extra time and space, especially in attack.

Ex-Chelsea man Olivier Giroud nodded over when unmarked in the area, but beyond that Milan struggled for a first-half foothold.

And then Aubameyang stroked home first-time from Mount’s pass to double the visitors’ lead for a stylish goal.

Conor Gallagher replaced Mount at half-time and quickly dragged a shot just wide as the Blues looked to maintain control.

Chelsea eased off the gas given their situational and territorial dominance, with Milan struggling to make any impact on proceedings.

Just when the Blues looked to wrap up the perfect night however, James handed boss Potter another injury problem.

England will also sweat on James’ issue, given the stellar wide man’s potential impact in Qatar.

Chelsea will roll onwards in Group E though, the Blues now in control of their destiny after two fine wins over Milan.

New boss Potter’s influence grows every day and the west Londoners appear to be warming to the ex-Brighton man’s approach.

  • Potter calls for focus in packed Chelsea schedule but receives boost on injury front

Chelsea head coach Graham Potter says there is a “long way to go” in the hunt for a top-four finish in the Premier League.

The Blues sit fifth, with Manchester United and Fulham the only sides in the top 10 to have suffered more defeats than Chelsea’s two.

Chelsea are eight points behind early pacesetters Arsenal, while the battle for Champions League qualification is set to be as fierce as ever.

Tottenham are four points ahead of Chelsea, while Liverpool have made a below-par start to the season by their lofty standards. Manchester United are only a point behind Potter’s team, while Manchester City seem more likely to be pushing for the title than tussling for a place in the top four, albeit they are second behind the Gunners.

Potter, though, knows it is far too early to draw any conclusions.

“I think we’ve made a little bit of progress from the first day to now, as you’d expect. There is a long way to go,” he said in Friday’s press conference ahead of Chelsea’s clash with manageress Wolves.

“We have to focus on the next match. We’ve got this incredible amount of games so rather than think too much about what’s going to happen at the end of the season, just focus on the next game.”

Potter also had positive news to share regarding Wesley Fofana and N’Golo Kante.

Fofana suffered an injury in the midweek win against Milan in the Champions League but will not be sidelined as long as was initially feared, while Kante has been absent since going off against Tottenham in Chelsea’s second game of the season.

“Wesley’s knee is not as bad as we thought. After the game we were concerned. It will be a few weeks we think. It’s considerably better than it could be,” Potter added.

“Possibly [he can return before the World Cup], it depends how his rehab goes. We wouldn’t want to put too much of a timescale on it but there is a chance.

“N’Golo is doing more and more integration with the team. He’s still not available for the weekend but he’s getting closer.”

  • RB Leipzig director Vivell dismissed amid Chelsea links

RB Leipzig technical director Christopher Vivell has been dismissed by the Bundesliga outfit amid reports linking him with a move to Chelsea.

Vivell joined Leipzig in 2020 after performing a similar role at Salzburg, where he worked alongside Christoph Freund as the club unearthed several young prospects, including Erling Haaland.

Both Vivell and Freund have recently been linked with Chelsea, who have been looking to appoint a sporting director since Petr Cech’s departure in June.

Chairman Todd Boehly has been performing the role on an interim basis during the first few months of his tenure, but Vivell’s Leipzig departure could potentially open the door to a move.

A statement from the German club said: “Christopher Vivell was released from his position as technical director yesterday, Thursday, with immediate effect due to differing views.”

Vivell’s former colleague Freund confirmed he would not be making the move to Stamford Bridge last month, declaring: “I came to the conclusion that I am in the best place at Salzburg, and a move was out of the question for me.”

Chelsea have been linked with several other sporting directors throughout their search, including Sevilla’s Monchi and Michael Edwards, formerly of Liverpool.

  • Callum Hudson-Odoi gets Thomas Tuchel treatment in Champions League controversy

Chelsea cannot escape Anthony Taylor, it seems.

Even players leaving on loan have been affected by the referee after Callum Hudson-Odoi’s first Bayer Leverkusen goal was chalked out by VAR.

The winger was playing his third Champions League match in a row, starting them all and playing until beyond 80 minutes in each as well, but wasn’t able to help his teammates to a second win in Group B, leaving it all to play for after three matches.

Hudson-Odoi, who has had a bright start to life in Germany, is playing consistent football at Leverkusen and is being given the chance to prove himself.

In seven matches in all competitions so far he has only notched up the one assist but he is looking much more confident than the player Chelsea saw for large periods last term.

Playing in a more central role, Hudson-Odoi is harnessing his dribbling skills and direct approach play to help his new teammates. Unfortunately that has been a struggle with just one win in eight league matches and Leverkusen sitting second bottom of Bundesliga. They have scored only nine goals.

It looked like the right decision after seeing replays and now Hudson-Odoi will have to wait to get his first goal. It came amid typical Taylor controversy after Leverkusen conceded but were then awarded a penalty at the other end instead, which was subsequently missed in dramatic fashion. They would the concede two second half goals and fall to a 2-0 away defeat.

As for Taylor, he was on the right side of the Hudson-Odoi decision this time but still isn’t a welcomed figure at Stamford Bridge after a string of high-profile decisions Chelsea fans hold against him, most recently the decision to not punish Cristian Romero for pulling Marc Cucurella’s hair in the fierce 2-2 draw with Tottenham when Thomas Tuchel was manager.

Tuchel’s criticism of Taylor got him into trouble following the match. And while Hudson-Odoi’s reaction wasn’t as strong, Chelsea fans will silently add this to their Taylor list.

  • Potter sure James can become a Chelsea ‘legend’

Graham Potter believes Reece James has all the attributes to become a Chelsea “legend” after his starring role in a 3-0 Champions League win over AC Milan on Wednesday.

James teed up Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang for Chelsea’s second following Wesley Fofana’s opener, before the England international added a third with a fierce close-range strike.

At the age of 22 years and 301 days, he became the youngest Chelsea player to both score and assist a goal in the same Champions League game.

Potter was thrilled with the wing-back’s contribution and is confident he has what it takes to go down as one of the club’s greats.

“I think Reece is just a fantastic player and he’s a young player,” Potter said in a press conference. “He’s developing all the time; he will get better and better as we go.

“I’ve really enjoyed working with him; he’s got a lot to offer. He’s fantastic, he can play in any game in the world, he’s just tremendous.

“He’s so important for us. My job is to try and help him reach his potential and his potential is he could be a Chelsea legend. That’s the level that he has, the potential that he has.

“But for that to happen he has to be part of a successful team and that’s what we’re working towards.”

Fofana’s first-half strike was his first for the club following the defender’s big-money move from Leicester City, but his match ended just 14 minutes later when he hobbled off after hurting his knee in a clash with Milan forward Rafael Leao, who has been touted as a target for the Blues.

Potter was unsure of the severity of the injury and confirmed the 21-year-old will undergo a scan on Thursday.

“We don’t know yet [how serious the injury is], we will do a scan tomorrow,” he added. “Fingers crossed.

“I wouldn’t want to speculate on it now but we’re concerned and hope for the best.

“He’s not had much luck but he’s a young guy, a strong guy. We’ll support him but not too much to report.”

  • ‘Everyone is frustrated’ – Jordan Ayew reacts to Crystal Palace’s defeat to Chelsea

Ghanaian striker, Jordan Ayew, is disappointed to have not snatched a point in their matchday 8 2022/2023 English Premier League fixture against Chelsea at Selhurst Park.

Crystal Palace lost 2-1 at home to Chelsea in Graham Potter’s first game in the Premier League since taking over from Thomas Tuchekl as the head coach of the Blues.

Reacting to the defeat, Jordan Ayew who set up French international Odsonne Edouard to score Palace’s first goal in the 7th minute believed that they should have gotten at least a point from the game.

“Frustration, everyone is frustrated. This is not the first time we have conceded in the last minute.”

“I think we were close. We deserved at least a point, but we are still a young team. We need to improve in a lot of things. We are improving but we need to improve quickly because the Premier League is ruthless.”

“We did well, we controlled the game. It was a nice game for the spectator, but for us it’s a positive performance but it’s not the result we wanted. There is something missing, and we need to work hard,” Jordan Ayew said after the game.

Crystal Palace are currently 17th on the 2022/2023 Premier League table after matchday 8.

  • Late Gallagher strike gives Potter winning league start

Conor Gallagher’s sublime last-minute strike earned Chelsea a 2-1 win against his former club Crystal Palace to give Graham Potter a winning start in the Premier League.

Second-half substitute Gallagher, who spent last season on loan at Selhurst Park, curled home in the 90th minute to win a game that Chelsea trailed early on.

Odsonne Edouard had given Palace the lead on home soil in Saturday’s contest, only for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to net his first goal for Chelsea before half-time.

Palace felt Thiago Silva should have been sent off before assisting that Aubameyang equaliser, and their mood was not helped by former player Gallagher’s late winner.

Wesley Fofana was drafted back into Chelsea’s line-up but gave the ball away and then failed to cut out a cross that was clinically converted by Edouard inside seven minutes.

Last man Silva was fortunate to stay on the field when using his hand to stop Jordan Ayew from running through on goal, referee Chris Kavanagh electing to issue only a yellow.

To rub salt in the Palace wounds, Silva nodded down a long ball into the path of Aubameyang, who let it bounce across his body and half-volleyed into the bottom left-corner.

Just when the sides appeared to be heading for a first league draw in 23 meetings, Gallagher – on the field for just 14 minutes – found the top-right corner from range to snatch the win.

What does it mean? Chelsea extend winning Palace run

Potter’s only game in charge since being appointed Chelsea boss on September 8 was a 1-1 Champions League draw against Salzburg.

This contest was heading the same frustrating way as that match, with Chelsea managing plenty of shots (13 come full-time) without truly troubling the opposition goalkeeper.

But Gallagher’s superb strike gave Potter lift-off in south London and stretched Chelsea’s winning league run against Palace to 10 in a row.

Conor comes back to haunt Palace

Gallagher’s goal was a particularly cruel one for Palace to take as it was the Eagles who gave him a platform to impress in the Premier League on a regular basis last season.

Now back at Chelsea, the 2022-23 campaign had started rather slowly for the midfielder, but this first league goal for the club will no doubt boost his confidence.

    Palace left fuming

Silva denied Ayew a likely scoring chance and, by the rule of the book, Palace boss Patrick Vieira – booked for his protestations – will rightly argue the defender should have gone.

Not only did Silva stay on the pitch, he also set up Aubameyang’s maiden goal for Chelsea, with that his second league assist this term – no Chelsea player has more.

    What’s next?

  • Chelsea ‘itching to play’ after lengthy Premier League wait for Potter

Chelsea head coach Graham Potter is raring to go against Crystal Palace, having had to endure an unusually long wait for his first Premier League game in charge.

Potter is set for a domestic debut on the bench after succeeding Thomas Tuchel, with clashes against Fulham and Liverpool prior to the international break postponed.

That has given the former Brighton and Hove Albion boss, appointed on September 8, a 23-day wait for his first domestic engagement, and Potter says his team are “itching to play” at Selhurst Park on Saturday.

“We used a bit of time to get to know people, but at the same time we’re itching to play,” Potter said at Friday’s press conference. “We couldn’t control anything in terms of how things have panned out, we’ve had to make the most of it.

“I’m sure it will be a nice one. It’s a proper football stadium. The boys are ready and waiting to play.

“You’ve got to start somewhere and there are a lot of games to come. The group are looking forward to playing.”

Potter oversaw Chelsea’s 1-1 with Salzburg in the Champions League, but the death of Queen Elizabeth II meant domestic duties were put on hold.

The Blues boss gave an insight into how he will approach squad management at Stamford Bridge, promising opportunities for young players if they prove their worth – particularly in the frantic run-up to the World Cup.

“All young players have to hope they get an opportunity. They put themselves in there in training and games. If the quality is there, age is no barrier,” Potter said.

“We’ve got six weeks and 13 matches, using the players the right way and winning matches in the toughest league in the world. That’s the challenge in the short term.”

A slow start to the season has seen Chelsea fall adrift of the early pacesetters in the Premier League, already sitting eight points behind leaders Arsenal, albeit with a game in hand.

Potter is clear there is plenty of work to do but is only focusing on the short term as he looks to get Chelsea back in the hunt.

“The first thing to say is change is good, bad and challenging, it’s how you deal with it and work for it,” he said. “It’s well documented what has happened. It’s part of life sometimes.

“It’s a bit more than a short-term challenge. The resources, or history, doesn’t guarantee you anything in this league. It’s about getting everything lined up and everyone working together and the strategy clear.”

As for whether a top-four finish is vital for Chelsea, Potter preferred to leave that for nearer the end of the campaign.

“Vital sounds a bit life-or-death and a bit dramatic,” he said. “I only focus on the next game or next session.”

  • Pulisic ready to ‘prove himself’ under new Chelsea boss Potter

Christian Pulisic is relishing a “fresh start” at Chelsea and accepts he must now “prove himself” to new head coach Graham Potter.

The 24-year-old managed just one start across Chelsea’s opening seven matches of the season prior to Thomas Tuchel being sacked and replaced by Potter.

Pulisic was a second-half substitute in Potter’s only game so far – a 1-1 Champions League draw with Salzburg – before heading off for international duty with the United States.

After a frustrating time of things under Tuchel, Pulisic considers the arrival of former Brighton and Hove Albion boss Potter as a chance to kick-start his Stamford Bridge career.

“I’m feeling good going back, honestly,” he told reporters following USA’s 0-0 draw against Saudi Arabia on Tuesday.

“I have a fresh start now, and I’m excited to play for the new manager. So I’m just looking forward to it. I just have to prove myself, as everyone does, and as I’ve done before.”

Pulisic played 76 minutes of the stalemate in Murcia – his longest outing for club or country this term – in what was USA’s final game before their World Cup campaign.

The ex-Borussia Dortmund winger did not look pleased at Gregg Berhalter’s decision to take him off, but he was ultimately happy to build up his fitness.

“I always want to be in the games,” Pulisic said of his reaction to being substituted.

“I was just trying to score goals and trying to win the game. But it’s good to get some minutes in and I feel healthy.”

USA failed to score in either of their friendlies this window, having also lost 2-0 to Japan, and Pulisic admits his side have to improve in certain attacking areas.

“There’s a lot of different ways to score goals, and I think there’s times where we can put more crosses in the box,” he said.

“We can be more aggressive and more relentless going forward. I think [against Saudi Arabia] we had glimpses of it, but just didn’t see it enough.”

  • Hayes admits Chelsea were lucky in City win

Emma Hayes admitted Chelsea were fortunate to beat Manchester City after recovering from a poor first-half showing to claim a 2-0 win.

The champions got their Women’s Super League season up and running thanks to goals from Fran Kirby and Maren Mjelde after the break at a sold-out Kingsmeadow.

It was harsh on City, who registered more shots on target than their counterparts and were particularly dominant during the opening period.

But after coming through that pressure to claim their first points of the season following an opening weekend defeat to Liverpool, the Blues boss felt her side ultimately deserved the win.

Hayes, 45, said: “I thought we over-played in the first half and just kept playing ourselves into trouble.

“We went from kicking long against Liverpool last week to now playing out in every situation and giving Man City their best chances.

“To say we didn’t carry out the game plan is unfair to the team but we over-carried out the game plan and played ourselves into trouble.

“In the second half, we adapted something to draw them underneath and play in the right moments, which really worked, but they also stopped pressing.

“We were lucky in the first half and a little bit tentative. It felt like today was the season opener rather than last week and it was two teams without momentum, but I thought it was comfortable in the end after a poor first half.”

    Positive signs for new-look City

Gareth Taylor saw positives despite Manchester City’s winless start to the season

It is now two defeats from two for the Citizens after a shock 4-3 loss to Aston Villa on the opening weekend.

But following a summer of upheaval with plenty of personnel changes, manager Gareth Taylor was encouraged by a lot of what he saw on Sunday despite the result.

On their winless start, he said: “It’s not great but it is what it is.

“We’ve had two away games, two tough away games. We’ve gone to Villa who are a new team and have done tremendously well on the day and coming here was always going to be difficult.

“They don’t really give much away, Chelsea — they lost last week, something was going to give today but I think the reaction and the levels that we showed today was really impressive and gives us something to build on.

“Our situation now is slightly different to what we had last season. It’s not injuries, it’s just a new team and new players to bed in.

“These will be really good players and this will be a really good team. Unfortunately at the moment we’ve had a couple of defeats which are tough to take but I think there were really positive signs there today.”

    Park shines in Merseyside derby

Jess Park scored a wonderful solo goal during Everton’s 3-0 win in the Merseyside derby

Brian Sorensen hailed Jess Park’s extraordinary display as Everton ran out 3-0 winners against Liverpool in the Merseyside derby in front of 27,000 at Anfield.

The 20-year-old forward, who is on loan from Manchester City, scored undoubtedly the pick of the goals after showing composure to round goalkeeper Rachael Laws and stroke home.

The Toffees boss said: “I’m really happy. I think the girls did exactly what we’ve been training on. In a game like this to have the coolness and calmness to do well.

“Jess has been a bit sick last week. In pre-season she hasn’t had the best ride so we are really lucky that she performed today and she was extraordinary.

“We are putting in a strategy in terms of how we want to play in a clear plan. The identity we want to show is really aggressive, our pressure was good today but we were composed.

“We saw the situation and we did not always have to send it long and chase it all the time.”

Park’s performance has led to calls for the youngster to gain international recognition with England.

While Sarina Wiegman has a wealth of options in the Lionesses’ attack, Kelly Smith believes the forward has all the attributes to be a future star for the European champions.

The former England forward told Sky Sports: “If she keeps working hard, and she’s got all the vision, technique, pace and power, the world is her oyster.”

    Record crowds ‘just the start’

Beth Mead scored the opener in Arsenal's 4-0 win over Tottenham, which was watched by a record crowd
Beth Mead scored the opener in Arsenal’s 4-0 win over Tottenham, which was watched by a record crowd

Arsenal star Beth Mead says the record WSL crowd for the North London derby is a sign of things to come for women’s football.

Mead, 27, scored a superb opener in the Gunners’ 4-0 victory over Tottenham, which was watched by 47,367 at the Emirates Stadium.

It follows a record-breaking summer for the women’s game, with England’s victorious Euro 2022 final against Germany attracting 87,192 spectators at Wembley — the most for a men’s or women’s European Championship showpiece.

Player of the Tournament Mead said: “It was incredible what we did in the summer but now we want to continue this and hopefully this is still just the beginning.

“I’ve never experienced that before, the fans were incredible.”

England captain and Arsenal team-mate Leah Williamson added: “It was incredible. Days like this, you want to celebrate the occasion but, actually, we have a job to do and we need to make sure we win, and that’s what we did and quite convincingly as well.

“It’s almost a relief we have performed in a way that might bring them back again. The occasion is great but you still have to turn up and do the job, and people still have to turn up next time.

“I feel very privileged because I have had an opportunity in an England shirt and an Arsenal shirt to be in these record-breaking crowds, it feels incredible.

“But I’m proud it’s Arsenal and it’s fitting that the club who have always been here for women’s football have pushed the boundaries and set new boundaries again.

“Setting another record on the back of the summer is exactly what we wanted.”

  • Jude available for £83m as top-four rivals step up pursuit

Jude Bellingham will reportedly be available for just £83million next summer as long as the fee is paid up front.

The midfielder, 19, is being chased by Manchester City, Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester United thanks to his accomplished performances for Borussia Dortmund and England.

His current employers are believed to want £130m to let him go but The Sun claim that their demands could take a significant reduction in order to secure the cash in a one-off payment.

The report adds that Pep Guardiola’s Citizens believe they have the money and draw to ensure they beat their rivals to the signature of one of the brightest talents in world football.

City won the race for former Dortmund superstar Erling Haaland last summer and the Norwegian has already racked up 11 goals in seven Premier League appearances.

Bellingham enjoys a good relationship with the prolific marksman and spoke highly of his former team-mate ahead of Dortmund’s Champions League defeat against the Citizens.

Liverpool have long been thought to be in pole position to sign the playmaker, who has made 100 first-team appearances for the Bundesliga outfit, as Jurgen Klopp looks to refresh his ageing midfield.

Big-spending Manchester United and Chelsea will also have their say in the pursuit, while Real Madrid have also been tipped to make a move.

  • Transfer Talk: Juve eye Pulisic amid Chelsea uncertainty

Juventus are keeping Chelsea winger Christian Pulisic on their radar amid uncertainty over the American’s future in England.

Pulisic, 24, has been a rare sight for fans of the West London club this season, having played just 156 minutes in the Premier League.

The USA international was linked with a move away from Stamford Bridge this summer, with Manchester United reportedly keen to take him on loan.

According to Tuttosport, Juve are closely monitoring Pulisic’s situation as they eye improvements to their frontline.

With Pulisic’s contract expiring in 2024, he may be on the market for a reduced fee should he decide to leave Graham Potter’s outfit.

In the 2019-20 season, the 51-cap international recorded 13 goal contributions in a campaign that saw Chelsea finish fourth in the Premier League but has struggled to hit those heights since.

The former Borussia Dortmund man admitted he had a strained relationship with former head coach Thomas Tuchel and was frustrated at broken promises.

Talking about the second leg of the Champions League defeat to Real Madrid last season, he said: “I honestly was dumbfounded and very disappointed.

“I thought that I’d earned a start and, most importantly, he had assured me previously I was going to start.

“So by the time he brought me on with about 25 minutes left, I was just so wound up.”

  • Chelsea sack commercial director Willoughby after he sent ‘inappropriate messages’ to football finance agent

helsea have sacked commercial director Damian Willoughby after he sent “inappropriate messages” to a female football finance agent.

Willoughby sent improper messages to Catalina Kim before he joined the club last month.

Kim was involved with a bid to buy the West London club in March.

“Chelsea confirms that it has terminated commercial director Damian Willoughby’s employment with immediate effect,” a club spokesperson said.

“Evidence of inappropriate messages sent by Mr Willoughby, prior to his appointment at Chelsea FC earlier this month, has recently been provided to and investigated by the club.

“While they were sent prior to his employment at the club, such behaviour runs absolutely counter to the workplace environment and corporate culture being established by the club’s new ownership.”

Last month Willoughby began a second spell at Stamford Bridge following the club’s takeover by an investment group led by businessman Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital.

Willoughby worked for Chelsea between 2007 and 2010 – and has also worked for Manchester City and EA Sports. But he has been sacked less than a month into the role.

The Telegraph, which first reported the story, said that Kim highlighted the messages to Chelsea’s head of business, Tim Glick, who hired Willoughby.

Kim’s firm C&P Sports Group were involved in British property owner Nick Candy’s bid to buy the club after it was put up for sale by former owner Roman Abramovich earlier this year.

A Chelsea spokesperson added: “The club’s owners are working tirelessly to set and achieve the highest standards both on and off the pitch, and are determined to establish and nurture a culture of transparency, accountability, inclusivity, diversity and opportunity.

“The club is committed to creating an environment which embodies these values.”

  • It’s a new experience for me – Hudson-Odoi on new role at Bayer Leverkusen

Ghana target Callum Hudson-Odoi is enjoying his No.10 role at Bayer Leverkusen, having joined them on a season-long loan from Chelsea in the recent summer window.

The 21-year-old has been deployed in the position by coach Gerardo Seoane behind center-forward Patrik Schick with Moussa Diaby and Jeremie Frimpong on either side.

Hudson-Odoi has made five appearances for the Bundesliga side this season and provided one assist.

“I’m definitely excited. I think it’s a new experience for me – I haven’t been anywhere else but Chelsea,” the highly-rated forward told Bayer’s website.

“So coming here, I’m delighted to be here and I can’t wait to get started with the boys, get going and hopefully do well.

“The project [is attractive]. I said to the family that I want to go out there and make sure that I’m playing football and get the opportunity to play in front of great fans. It’s massive for me to come here.”

  • Hudson-Odoi opens up on frustrations under Thomas Tuchel

Bayern Leverkusen winger, Callum Hudson-Odoi has opened up on how he got frustrated by the lack of game time at Chelsea.

The winger disclosed he was frustrated with Thomas Tuchel’s decision to leave him out of the squad for the opening day of the Premier League.

He narrates that the move by the coach got him thinking deeply about the future of his football career.

Callum Hudson-Odoi who is thriving on loan at Bayern Leverkusen noted with happiness the chance to play football and get more minutes.

The British -born of Ghanaian descent said that playing regularly gives players confidence and helps them improve.

“It was one of those difficult moments when you look at yourself and say, ‘What am I doing wrong? Have I done anything wrong to not even be in the squad?” he said of his opening day snub.

“I would never say anything bad about Thomas, he was a good guy, a good manager. [But] the first game of the season, it was frustrating. Any footballer that isn’t in the squad would understand how frustrating it is. Regular football gives you consistency and the more games you play, the more consistent you become, the more form starts to kick in.

“You feel fresher, you feel better, you feel like…not that you’re getting treated fairly but that you’ve got the trust from the manager to push you and kick you on. You don’t want to be on the bench thinking, ‘Why am I not playing?’ And then it becomes weeks and weeks and the legs are rusty when you do play. The most important thing is consistent football. That’s what I’m getting here and it’s making me feel better.

“Right now, playing games, momentum is kicking on and you feel refreshed: new country, brand-new experience. It’s definitely refreshing to know I get an opportunity to play games week in, week out, enjoying it and smiling!”

Hudson-Odoi is one of a number of players being courted by the Ghana Football Association to represent Ghana at the World Cup.

  • Xavi influenced my move to Barca – Kounde reveals

Jules Kounde has revealed that his decision to move to Barcelona and not Chelsea was as a result of Xavi’s speech.

Kounde revealed that although Tuchel tried to convince him to join The Blues, Xavi’s words were unmatched.

“First, I have come to a huge club, which has known good times and which, lately, has had less,” he said.

“I come to a project that I would not call reconstruction, because we already have a competitive team, but rather, being upturned.

“I was interested in being part of this new wave, in search of titles, and to put Barca back where it has always been, among the best clubs.

“Then there was the conversation with the coach. We talked about football. I felt a real confidence from him, that he had a real knowledge of myself, my game and my qualities.

“I spoke with Tuchel and I also felt that he wanted me to come, but I simply preferred Xavi’s speech,” he let out in an interview with French outlet L’Equipe.

The France international had looked set to sign for Chelsea during the most recent transfer window, only to put pen to paper on a five-year deal at Camp Nou.

Sevilla director of football Monchi suggested at the time that Barca pounced for Kounde after Chelsea had withdrawn their offer due to “having doubts”.

Chelsea have made a slow start to the 2022-23 season and recently brought an end to Tuchel’s 20-month tenure.

Despite their high-profile financial issues, meanwhile, Barca have made a strong start to their campaign and are two points off LaLiga leaders Real Madrid after six matches.

Kounde was registered by Barcelona at the end of August, a month after joining, and has helped the Catalan giants to four clean sheets in his five appearances.

Indeed, the five clean sheets Barca have kept in their opening six league matches is a tally they did not reach until 21 games played last season.

And Kounde, one of two defenders alongside team-mate Alejandro Balde to have provided two assists in a single LaLiga match this term, believes he is well suited to Xavi’s style.

“When I talked to Xavi he told me that my qualities correspond to his game plan, starting from the back, playing high, using my qualities of speed and anticipation,” Kounde said.

“He also wants an aggressive team – we are one of the teams that presses high.

“He saw me in this system and I too saw myself in this team that I saw make a pretty crazy rise in the table last season.

“With Sevilla we were 15 points ahead of them in the middle of the season. Xavi arrived and I saw the changes he made and what direction he was going in. I liked it.”

  • Hudson-Odoi reassured over Chelsea future by Boehly before Leverkusen loan transfer

After struggling for regular first-team minutes under Thomas Tuchel, Hudson-Odoi took a chance and left Chelsea to join Bayer Leverkusen on loan for the 2022-23 season. The 21-year-old has now revealed that Boehly was involved in the final decision and made sure that a buy option wasn’t included so that he can still have a long-term future at Stamford Bridge.

WHAT HE SAID: Speaking to the Daily Mail, Hudson-Odoi said: “When a club is trying to get a player [on loan], they always want that option to buy at the end of the season. Todd was saying: ‘Listen, we want you back here.’ You’re still on the radar of being wanted by the club. The way he’s trying to set it up, there are a lot of young players he’s trying to buy for the next few years. It shows he wants to integrate the players into the team and help them develop.”

THE BIGGER PICTURE: Hudson-Odoi may fancy his chances of breaking into Chelsea’s first team when he returns in July next year. New boss Graham Potter has been appointed by Boehly, who has made it clear that he will be focusing on the development of the club’s youth, with Hudson-Odoi in line to benefit despite the fact his current contract is due to expire in 2024.

WHAT NEXT FOR HUDSON-ODOI? After an impressive display vs Atletico Madrid in the Champions League, Hudson Odoi will be looking to continue in the same vein of form when Leverkusen face Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich on September 30, before their focus switches to a European clash against Porto.

  • Rodgers backs Potter for Chelsea success but warns of ‘different pressure’

Leicester City manager Brendan Rodgers has warned Graham Potter he can expect a “different pressure” at Chelsea but believes it is a “fantastic move”.

Potter has been named as Thomas Tuchel’s successor at Stamford Bridge, following the axing of the Champions League-winning boss on Wednesday.

New Blues owner Todd Boehly has been extremely active since taking over from Roman Abramovich, splashing vast amounts of money in the transfer market, and has now made his first managerial appointment.

Chelsea received permission from Brighton to speak to Potter on Wednesday and confirmation of his appointment followed today.

Rodgers, who has experience in high-pressure clubs following his time with Liverpool, has told Potter he will encounter different challenges than his time at Brighton but feels it is the right move.

“It’s a different pressure,” Rodgers said in the press conference ahead of Saturday’s clash with Aston Villa.

“He’s done fantastic at Brighton, they’ve really developed. They’re strategically well run behind the scenes.

“It’s that next step and it will be a fantastic move for him.”

Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl echoed Rodgers’ sentiment, backing Potter to succeed after impressing with Brighton.

“I must congratulate them for a very good choice. For me, [Potter] is the manager in the last two years with the biggest impact in a club with all the limits they had,” he said.

“With all the transfers they gave away to other clubs and they’re still competing at the highest level. It shows how good this group is.

“I was speaking with Pascal Gross who plays there and we were speaking very often about the development of the club.

“I think [Potter] did a fantastic job with this group. He has all the experience I think to step into a bigger club and show there that he can perform at the highest level.

“It’s a clear signal that there are good English managers out there that can work at the highest level. He wasn’t always working in England either, he also went to foreign countries to get experience.

“He was not too much full of ego and only staying here, he was looking for other options to learn and to develop his knowledge. This is a very good way of doing it and way of developing your knowledge in football.”

  • Queen’s death: Chelsea postpone Potter media unveiling

Chelsea were to unveil their new head coach Graham Potter, but this has been postponed owing to the demise of Queen Elizabeth II.

Potter was to face the media for the first time at 1.30pm BST at Chelsea’s Cobham training ground.

That was announced before the Queen’s death on Thursday and Chelsea moved to cancel the planned session on Friday morning.

The decision was taken amid uncertainty over whether the weekend’s English football programme would go ahead as planned. It was announced at 11.30am BST that Premier League games would be postponed.

Potter left Brighton to take over at Chelsea following the sacking of Thomas Tuchel.

German boss Tuchel was surprisingly dismissed on Wednesday, just a day on from a 1-0 defeat at Dinamo Zagreb in the Champions League.

That result followed an indifferent start to the Premier League season, during which Chelsea have taken 10 points from a possible 18 after a bold spending spree under new owner Todd Boehly.

Boehly said of Potter’s appointment: “We are thrilled to bring Graham to Chelsea. He is a proven coach and an innovator in the Premier League who fits our vision for the club.”

  • Transfer Talk: Barcelona mull legal action against Atletico over Griezmann?

Manchester City’s Bernardo Silva has long been a target for Barcelona. Lynne Cameron – Manchester City/Manchester City FC via Getty Images

The summer transfer window is closed for the major leagues in Europe. However, with an eye on January, there’s plenty of gossip swirling about who’s moving where. Transfer Talk brings you all the latest buzz on rumours, comings, goings and, of course, done deals!

Barcelona have not given up on signing Manchester City midfielder Bernardo Silva, according to Sport.

The Portugal international told ESPN’s Rob Dawson last month that his future at the Premier League champions was uncertain amid interest from Barca and Paris Saint-Germain, but he ended up staying at the Etihad stadium on deadline day.

“The truth is there have been no offers from Spain, so I’m staying in Manchester and I’m happy,” Silva said shortly before the transfer window closed. “That’s all, that’s my choice.”

However, Sport reports that Barcelona would have made a concerted bid to sign the 28-year-old in the summer were it not for the difficulties they had in registering their other new signings due to their financial constraints, and the Spanish giants plan to renew their efforts to bring him to Camp Nou as soon as they are able.

Silva has been at the Etihad Stadium since 2017 and is under contract until 2025.

Rodrygo and Eder Militao are set to follow Vinicius Junior in receiving Spanish passports early in 2023, sources told ESPN’s Alex Kirkland and Rodrigo Faez, opening up the possibility of Real Madrid moving to sign more top talents from Brazil and other non-European countries.

LaLiga clubs are allowed to include three players from countries outside the European Union in their first-team squads. In Madrid’s case, those spots have been occupied by Vinicius, Rodrygo and Militao. Madrid confirmed earlier this week that Vinicius, 22, had been granted Spanish nationality, having begun the process — which was delayed by the pandemic — back in 2020. Sources told ESPN that Rodrygo and Militao are set to receive theirs early in next year, meaning the club could now target non-European players to improve the first team squad in the January window and again next summer.

Real Madrid were contacted about the possibility of signing Gabriel Jesus before he joined Arsenal, sources told ESPN, but the idea was dismissed because his Brazilian passport made such a deal impossible at the time.

In February, ESPN reported that Madrid were tracking the development of Palmeiras wonderkid Endrick, 16, although a move for him would have to wait until he turns 18 in 2024.

Madrid opted not to strengthen their forward line for this season, relying on the form and fitness of Karim Benzema, 34, and allowing the out-of-favour Luka Jovic to join Fiorentina. Benzema was injured this week during the Champions League win against Celtic and is now set to spend a month on the sidelines recovering.

Jordi Alba says he remains 100% committed to Barcelona despite losing his place in the team and being linked with a move to Italian side Inter Milan.

Alba has been on the bench for Barca’s last three LaLiga games, with 18-year-old Alejandro Balde picked ahead of him. Barca have also signed Marcos Alonso from Chelsea, who will add further competition for the left-back position.

“It’s not about if it seems fair or not to me, the situation is what it is,” Alba told reporters at an Adidas event on Thursday when asked if he was annoyed by Barca’s negotiations with Inter.

“Everyone acts as they see fit. I am someone who likes it to be told as it is, I am like that with everyone. Not everyone likes it, but that’s how I am. I can’t say anything else. Nothing surprises me anymore in football with what I have seen.

“My thoughts have always focused around staying at Barcelona. I feel capable of staying here for the rest of my contract [until 2024]. I am 100% committed.

“I have been at the club for years and there have been moments when I have not played, but I always try to give my best. Right now, I am not getting [as many] minutes, but I try to help the team however I can.”

Chelsea are aiming to appoint a sporting director before the World Cup in November and new head coach Graham Potter will be involved in the selection process, sources have told ESPN’s James Olley.

Blues co-owners Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali have met with several potential candidates and are keen to make an announcement before the mid-season domestic break to allow their new appointment time to influence planning for the January transfer window.

Sources have told ESPN that former Liverpool sporting director Michael Edwards informed the club last month he did not wish to be considered for the role, although it is unclear how he would react to a fresh approach.

Former head coach Thomas Tuchel, who was sacked on Wednesday, had previously expressed his relief at not being asked for his advice on the position but, in what represents a shift in philosophy from the new owners, Potter’s opinion will be taken into account before a final decision is made.

Potter’s appointment on a five-year contract was confirmed on Thursday afternoon and sources told ESPN his style of play and ability to improve players through coaching ranked as key reasons why they chose the 47-year-old.

Boehly appointed himself as interim sporting director following the departures of lead negotiator and club director Marina Granovskaia and technical and performance adviser Petr Cech, both leaving after Roman Abramovich’s sale of the club at the end of May.

Alongside Eghbali with input from Tuchel, Boehly oversaw Chelsea’s record spend in a single transfer window, committing more than £250m on nine new players including Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Marc Cucurella and Kalidou Koulibaly.

Galatasaray announced the signing of former Manchester United midfielder Juan Mata on Thursday on a one-year deal, with the option to extend a further year.

Mata, 34, moved to United from Chelsea in January 2014 and made 285 appearances, winning the FA Cup, League Cup and Europa League during an eight-year spell. A skilful playmaker, he managed 51 goals and 47 assists for United.

The Turkish side also announced that they have taken Argentina striker Mauro Icardi from Paris Saint-Germain on loan for the 2022-2023 season.

Galatasaray also signed Uruguay midfielder Lucas Torreira last month on a four-year contract from Arsenal.

Former Chelsea and Atletico Madrid striker Diego Costa has passed his medical ahead of his proposed move to Wolves, according to The Times.

Costa, 33, had his initial application for a UK work permit rejected on Tuesday, but that was overturned on appeal. He has since arrived in England complete his transfer on a one-year contract.

Wolves have been left short of strikers in their squad after summer signing Sasa Kalajdzic sustained a knee ligament injury during his debut on Saturday, while Raul Jimenez missed the opening two games of the season with a knee injury.

Spain international Costa had been without a club since leaving Atletico Mineiro in January after five months at the club, during which he scored four goals in 15 games and lifted the Brazilian league title.

Costa previously helped Atletico Madrid to the LaLiga title in 2014 before embarking on a successful three-year spell at Chelsea, where he scored 59 goals in 120 games in all competitions and won two Premier League titles in 2015 and 2017, as well as the League Cup in 2015. He left to return to Atletico in 2017 and helped the club to another LaLiga title in 2021, but left to return to his native Brazil last summer and join Atletico Mineiro.

    – Former Liverpool goalkeeper Loris Karius has signed a short-term contract with Newcastle United, according to Fabrizio Romano. The 29-year-old German had not made any appearances for Liverpool since 2018, and had loan stints at Union Berlin and Besiktas since then.

    – Leicester City have blocked Caglar Soyuncu‘s return to Turkey, reports Football Insider. Both Besiktas and Galatasaray were looking to sign the 26-year-old defender before the end of the Turkish transfer window, but following the departure of Wesley Fofana to Chelsea, Foxes coach Brendan Rogers wants to keep Soyuncu at the struggling side.

    - Hatem Ben Arfa could be forced into retirement, according to Media Foot. The 35-year-old is still without a club, after leaving Lille this summer. The Ligue 1 side was the France international’s fifth club in five years, and his 10th transfer of his career. It is reported that the former Paris Saint-Germain star’s salary demands has left him with viable options.

    – Following a bruising 4-0 defeat to Udinese at the weekend, AS Roma boss Jose Mourinho is searching search for a centre-back in the free agent market. According to Rudy Galetti, among the considerations are Jason Denayer, Dan-Axel Zagaduo and Nikola Maksimovic, but the Giallorossi may have to wait until the January transfer window to find a suitable addition for central defence.

    - Agustin Rossi is set to leave Boca Juniors after rejecting their latest contract offer, which would have kept the goalkeeper at La Bombonera until December 2026. Cesar Luis Merlo reports that after failed negotiations, the 27-year-old shot-stopper will not sign a new deal with the Argentian side. With his contract set to expire in 2023, the Argentina international’s will likely depart the Buenos Aires club in the next transfer window, or he will leave on a free transfer in June.

  • Chelsea: Graham Potter appointed as manager

Graham Potter will replace Thomas Tuchel as the new manager of Chelsea.

Chelsea announced his appointment on Thursday, September 8, 2022.

Potter has left Brighton to take up the new role. Chelsea and Potter have signed a five-year deal.

According to the 47-year-old, he is “incredibly proud and excited to represent Chelsea”.

Potter’s first game in charge will be an away derby with fellow west London club Fulham on Saturday at 12:30 BST.

His assistant Billy Reid, first-team coaches Bjorn Hamberg and Bruno, goalkeeping coach Ben Roberts and assistant head of recruitment Kyle Macaulay will join him at the Chelsea, who have paid Brighton in excess of £21m in compensation.

“We are thrilled to bring Graham to Chelsea,” said the Stamford Bridge club’s chairman Todd Boehly.

“He is a proven coach and an innovator in the Premier League who fits our vision for the club.

“Not only is he extremely talented on the pitch, he has skills and capabilities that extend beyond the pitch which will make Chelsea a more successful club.

“He has had a major impact at his previous clubs and we look forward to his positive impact at Chelsea.

“We look forward to supporting him, his coaching team and the squad in realising their full potential in the coming months and years.”

Former Ostersunds FK and Swansea City manager Potter led Brighton to a ninth-place finish last season, the club’s highest ever top-flight finish.

He has guided them to fourth in the table this season after winning four, drawing one and losing one of their six Premier League games.

Chelsea decided to sack Tuchel, who won three trophies in 20 months at Stamford Bridge, with the Blues sixth in the top flight following a summer in which they spent £255.3m in the summer transfer window.

“I am very excited to partner with Chelsea’s new ownership group and look forward to meeting and working with the exciting group of players and to develop a team and culture that our amazing fans can be proud of,” said Potter.

He also offered a “sincere thanks” to Brighton, including chairman Tony Bloom, for their support during his spell of just more than three-years at the club.

Brighton Under-21 coach Andrew Crofts has taken over as Brighton’s interim head coach, while attacking midfielder Adam Lallana will be part of his coaching set up.

“I am very disappointed that Graham will be leaving us,” said Bloom.

“He has done exceptionally well over the past three-and-a-bit seasons, he is an exceptional head coach and an exceptional person. He will be hugely missed at our football club.

“He leaves an excellent legacy for his successor with the club in its highest ever position, and on the back of leading us to our highest finish in the club’s history last season.

“I would like to thank Graham, Billy, Bjorn, Bruno, Ben and Kyle for their work here, and wish them all the very best for the future.

“While our attention is now on appointing Graham’s successor as head coach our immediate focus, of course, is on Saturday’s game at Bournemouth and supporting Andrew Crofts as interim head coach.”

  • Social media users react in shock to Chelsea’s sacking of Thomas Tuchel

Football fans have been shocked to learn that Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel has been fired.

Football fans including Chelsea fans have been hit with shock after the club announced that they had parted ways with Tuchel after nearly three years with the club.

The German’s dismissal comes after a string of inconsistencies in results since the start of the season, culminating in a humiliating 1-0 loss to Dinamo Zagreb on the opening day of the UEFA Champions League.

Although the majority are stunned, some believe firing a coach after a short run of poor results is a Chelsea trait, a precedent set by a former owner, Roman Abramovich, and now followed by a new owner, Todd Boehly.

Thomas Tuchel managed his 100th game as Chelsea manager in the defeat to Zagreb and was hoping to do so again, but it all appears to be a pipe dream.

“It’s nice, 100 is very nice. I hope there will be another 100 then another 100 coming,” he said as quoted by the club’s website.

He recorded 62 wins, 19 draws, and 18 losses within his period as Chelsea manager. He won three major titles, UEFA Champions League, UEFA Super Cup, and the FIFA Club World Cup.

  • Know the managers who have been sacked after first Champions League matchday one

Heads have begun to roll just after Tuesday’s UEFA Champions League matchday one with two managers being shown the exit.

After the games on Tuesday, September 6, 2022, RB Leipzig and Chelsea, who recorded shocking defeats on opening day, have let go of their managers.

The dismissed managers were already walking on eggshells following poor starts to the new season and the shells got smashed after a disappointing turn of results on matchday one.

    RB Leipzig – Domenico Tedesco

RB Leipzig had a nightmarish start in the Champions League as they were thrashed 4-1 at home by Shakhtar Donetsk.

The German club bid farewell to the 36-year-old Italian manager the morning after the defeat, ending his 9 months stay at the club.

He won the German Cup and led Leipzig to the semi-finals of the Europa League last season.

The defeat on Tuesday night was his fourth of the new season in matches in all competitions. He won only two of those.

The club sits 11th on the Bundesliga table with 5 points.

    Chelsea – THomas Tuchel

Chelsea had an unwanted start to their Champions League campaign following their 1-0 away loss to Dinamo Zagreb.

The big news the morning after the defeat was the surprise sacking of Thomas Tuchel as manager of the club.

Tuchel managed his 100th game as Chelsea manager in the defeat to Zagreb and was hoping to do so again, but it all appears to be a pipe dream.

He recorded 62 wins, 19 draws, and 19 losses within his period as Chelsea manager. He won three major titles, UEFA Champions League, UEFA Super Cup, and the FIFA Club World Cup.

After six games, Thomas Tuchel leaves the club in sixth place with 10 points, a win and two draws behind leaders Arsenal.

  • Why Chelsea sacked Thomas Tuchel

London-based journalist, Ben Jacobs has broken down the events that led to Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel’s shocking dismissal on Wednesday, September 7, 2022.

Jacobs explained on Twitter that, one of the main reasons for Tuchel’s dismissal was the manager’s decision to abandon his new role of getting involved in the club’s transfers in order to focus on fieldwork, which resulted in the club missing out on their key targets, Raphinha and Jules Kounde during the summer window.

One of the major decisions Todd Boehly made after taking over from Roman Abramovic as Chelsea owner was axing sporting director, Marina Granovskaia and assuming the role temporarily to work alongside Tuchel on the club’s transfers.

According to Jacobs, Tuchel’s cold reaction to the club’s transfer business prompted Boehly to step up and do things on his own, which resulted in the club renewing the contracts of Reece James and Azpilicueta as well as making some signings.

Jacobs continued that Boehly after carrying out all the duties by himself had a feeling of a new era, hence, Tuchel’s sacking was on the horizon.

Therefore, the firing of Tuchel on Wednesday was not solely based on Chelsea’s poor run or the disappointing 1-0 loss to Dinamo Zagreb in the Champions League. But, Boehly is in search of a manager who is willing to assume the authority of being influential on and off the pitch.

Thomas Tuchel managed his 100th game as Chelsea manager in the defeat to Zagreb and was hoping to do so again, but it all appears to be a pipe dream.

  • Chelsea: Social media reacts to Thomas Tuchel’s dismissal

Users of social media are reacting to Chelsea’s decision to sack their manager Thomas Tuchel.

Chelsea announced Tuchel’s dismissal on Wednesday, September 7, following a defeat in the UEFA Champions League opener.

The Premier League side suffered a shocking 0-1 defeat to Dinamo Zagreb in Croatia on Tuesday, adding to their disappointing start to the season.

According to some supporters of the club, Chelsea’s decision cannot be welcomed. They believe Tuchel has done good in the past and should be given the opportunity to right the wrong that is going on with the team.

However, some say his dismissal is the best thing that can happen to Chelsea.

Chelsea have already lost two league games and lie sixth with 10 points after six games.

  • Man Utd’s Ten Hag ‘sorry’ for sacked Tuchel

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has said he feels “sorry” for Thomas Tuchel after his dismissal.

Chelsea today, September 7, sacked Tuchel due to the non-performance of the club.

Although Eric ten Hag feels disturbed, he said “there is nothing I can say.”

“It’s Chelsea, not Man United. It’s early in the season, yes,” he added.

Tuchel parted company with the Blues just a day on from starting their Champions League campaign with a shock 1-0 loss at Dinamo Zagreb.

An indifferent start to their Premier League campaign that has produced three wins, two defeats and a draw has left Chelsea sixth in the table.

The news came as a surprise to many, though, given Chelsea spent big in the transfer window to sign the likes of Raheem Sterling, Marc Cucurella, Wesley Fofana, Kalidou Koulibaly and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

Having also won the Champions League four months after joining the club in January 2021, most would have expected Tuchel to be afforded more time by the club’s new owners led by Todd Boehly.

United are one place and two points ahead of Chelsea in the infant Premier League.

  • Highs and lows of dismissed Tuchel at Stamford Bridge

Chelsea earlier today sacked their manager Thomas Tuchel due to the non-performance of the club.

This week’s defeat to Zagreb was the final straw for new owner Todd Boehly, after a slow start to the new Premier League season that has seen Chelsea win just three of their first six games.

In the wake of his departure, we take a look at the highs and lows of the Tuchel era at Stamford Bridge…

Thomas Tuchel replaced Frank Lampard and has been with Chelsea for close to 20 months.

He led the Blues to an improbable Champions League triumph just weeks after his arrival.

HIGH: European glory from the ashes

Tuchel did more than steer Chelsea back on track he pulled off a shock silverware smash-and-grab.

He took the club to an eventual fourth-place finish, as well as oversaw two-legged wins over Porto and Real Madrid to reach the Champions League final and there, shocked favourites Manchester City to claim the Blues’ second title in Europe’s biggest club competition.

    LOW: Ignominy on the continent

For that high-water mark, however, Chelsea have also had issues at continental level, perhaps best exemplified by two disparate results  this week’s loss to Zagreb and last season’s Champions League quarter-final exit to Madrid.

Defeat to the Croatian side came with a toothless attack that failed to gel for the German, but the crash against Madrid  when they allowed Karim Benzema to find an extra-time winner showcased their struggle to close out games.

    HIGH: Final delights…

In the time Tuchel has been in charge at Stamford Bridge, he reached all three domestic cup finals available to him, with FA Cup showpiece appearances in 2021 and 2022, and an EFL Cup trip to Wembley, too.

That saw him stand alone in the history of the club and cemented his reputation as something of a cup specialist.

    LOW: …and failures

But on each occasion, he failed to guide the Blues over the line, losing last season to underdogs Leicester City before suffering a pair of defeats against a quadruple-chasing Liverpool side this year.

While he has enjoyed greater success abroad, the struggles at Wembley have haunted his reputation and may well have played a part in his ultimate dismissal.

    HIGH: Champions of the world

Chelsea’s Champions League triumph qualified them for a shot at two more major prizes last season  and credit is due for Tuchel guiding them to both, allowing them to stake a claim as the greatest club team in world football.

A nervy Super Cup win over Villarreal was aided by Kepa Arrizabalaga’s penalty shootout heroics, while Kai Havertz’ extra-time penalty helped the Blues sink Palmeiras to be crowned Club World Cup winners.

    LOW: Lukaku lethargy

If there is to be a player that marks Tuchel’s legacy at Chelsea outside of his Champions League triumph though, it will almost certainly be Romelu Lukaku  one of the worst transfer flops in recent memory.

Returning to Chelsea after a Serie A title win with Inter, hopes were high for the Belgian’s homecoming, but his poor form and difficulties within the German’s system saw him frozen out over the latter half of the season.

Lukaku returned to Inter on a year-long loan over the off-season, with just eight Premier League goals in 26 games, and it remains to be seen whether he ever steps foot back in Stamford Bridge again or, if like Tuchel, his time at the club is now over.

  • ‘Everything is missing’ – Tuchel after Champions League loss

Chelsea head coach Thomas Tuchel has admitted that all is not well with the club after their tragic loss on Tuesday against Dinamo Zagreb.

Thomas Tuchel took charge of Chelsea for the 100th time on Tuesday, but there was no celebration after the game.

Chelsea suffered a1-0 Champions League loss against Dinamo Zagreb.

According to Tuchel, “We are clearly not there, where we need to be and where we can be.”

“I am angry at myself, I am angry at our performance. I didn’t see it coming. We need to be much better. We are not finished, we are not happy but I thought we were on a good way. I am surprised by this performance,” he told BT Sport.

He noted that the onus lies on him and the entire club to find a solution to the challenge.

‘A lack of hunger, intensity and determination’

    Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang made his debut for Chelsea after the deadline-day move from Barcelona

Roman Abramovich was seen as the man who changed English football by buying Chelsea in 2003 and then sanctioning an incredible period of spending in the transfer market.

In his 19 years as owner, the Blues won 20 pieces of silverware, including five Premier League titles and two Champions Leagues.

But the Russian was forced to sell the club because of his links with President Vladimir Putin and new owner Todd Boehly has followed suit by allowing Tuchel to splash the cash.

Their outlay of almost £300m in the summer transfer window was the highest in Europe, but it seems the big-name signings are so far struggling to gel.

Centre-backs Kalidou Koulibaly and Wesley Fofana, who together cost more than £100m, are yet to forge a cohesive partnership in defence, while debutant Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang will need time to settle in after having his jaw broken in a violent robbery at his house.

England international Raheem Sterling was largely anonymous against Dinamo and £60m Spanish left-back Marc Cucurella was introduced off the bench to little effect.

Chelsea have now failed to keep a clean sheet in their past six games, since opening the Premier League campaign with a 1-0 victory at Everton.

Mislav Orsic, who netted a hat-trick to knock Tottenham out of the Europa League in the 2020-21 season, scored the winning goal for Dinamo in the 13th minute with a beautifully dinked finish.

“It’s an underperformance from us,” said a furious Tuchel. “We have the same story as always.

“We have an OK start, we don’t finish our half-chances, we don’t feel it when the game is already there to put to bed in the first 15-20 minutes.

“Then we concede one counter-attack, which is far too easy, and from there we struggled.”

Asked how many players were at the top of their game, Tuchel replied: “Not a lot at the moment.

“I don’t know where this performance comes from. It’s a lack of hunger, intensity, a lack of determination to win duels, to actually do things on the highest level.

“You cannot expect to win games, not in the Premier League or Champions League. We are not where we want to be.”

    Forwards look ‘low on confidence’

    Thomas Tuchel
Tuchel was booked by the referee in the second half

Tuchel’s frustrations boiled over once again as he was booked by the referee in Croatia for complaining about time-wasting by the opponent.

It’s not the first time this season the German has been in trouble with the officials, having had a heated confrontation with Tottenham boss Antonio Conte after their 2-2 draw last month.

Both men were shown a red card for their actions, but Tuchel was handed a one-game touchline suspension as well as a fine.

He led Chelsea to their second Champions League title just four months after his appointment in January 2021 – and the Super Cup and Club World Cup quickly followed, but last season ended trophyless.

Now after an inconsistent start to the season, Tuchel needs to quickly address his side’s issues.

“Where do we start?” asked former Chelsea forward Joe Cole on BT Sport. “Balance, I think that’s the key. The new guys at the back have really got to pull it together as soon as they can. There’s no flow.

“We could have picked countless incidents where Koulibaly was on the wrong side. For a 31-year-old defender, he really needs to get up to speed.

“At the other end of the pitch, is there a lack of confidence starting to develop? There’s a lot of talk of lack of goals, lack of assists.

“The front three, he made four or five changes in that area, and they all look low on confidence. They are all quality players at Chelsea, but for some reason it’s just not happening for the likes of Christian Pulisic, Hakim Ziyech etc.”

  • I have unfinished business – Chelsea sign Aubameyang

Chelsea have signed forward Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in a £10.3m deal from Barcelona and Juventus midfielder Denis Zakaria on loan.

Gabon striker Aubameyang, 33, scored 13 goals in 24 appearances for Barca after joining the Spanish club in February from Arsenal.

Left-back Marcos Alonso has left Chelsea by mutual consent and is expected to sign for Barcelona.

Chelsea have the option to sign Zakaria on a permanent deal.

The 25-year-old Switzerland international only joined Juve from Borussia Monchengladbach in January.

When Aubameyang signed for Barca he had a buyout clause of 100m euros (£83.4m) in his contract, but has only played eight minutes this season. Barcelona have been looking to offload players after spending almost £200m on new arrivals despite being more than £1bn in debt.

The deal for Aubameyang means Chelsea chairman Todd Boehly has spent £255.3m in his first transfer window since buying the club from Roman Abramovich – the highest amount any English club has spent in a single transfer window.

Aubameyang said: ‘I’m really happy. It’s an honour to be part of this team and I can’t wait to start. I have some unfinished business with the Premier League so it’s good to be back and really exciting.’

He scored 92 goals in 163 games in all competitions for Arsenal, but left on a free transfer after falling out with manager Mikel Arteta.

That departure played a big part in the Gunners documentary All or Nothing.

Only four players have scored more Premier League goals than Aubameyang’s total of 68 in the period since 31 January 2018 – the date he joined Arsenal.

Aubameyang played under Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel at Borussia Dortmund between 2015 and 2017.

He scored 79 goals in 95 games in that time, 38 more than under any other manager.

    Denis Zakaria
Denis Zakaria, like Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, had only joined his team earlier this year

This summer the Blues have brought in nine players, including Leicester’s French defender Wesley Fofana for a fee in the region of £70m, Spain left-back Marc Cucurella from Brighton for £62m, England forward Raheem Sterling from Manchester City for £50m, Senegal defender Kalidou Koulibaly from Napoli for £34m and English midfielder Carney Chukwuemeka from Aston Villa for £20m.

Boehly said: ‘Pierre-Emerick is an elite striker with a proven track record in the Premier League and his arrival strengthens our squad, giving us new attacking options. We are thrilled to have Pierre-Emerick on board with us in the new era at Chelsea and we’re really looking forward to working with him.’

  • Chelsea agree to sign Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang – Guillem Balague

Chelsea have agreed a deal in principle worth £12m, plus defender Marcus Alonso, for Barcelona striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, according to Guillem Balague.

Aubameyang scored 13 goals in 24 appearances for Barca after joining the Spanish club in February from Arsenal.

The 33-year-old would be Chelsea’s seventh summer signing.

The former Gabon international scored 92 goals in 163 games in all competitions for Arsenal, but left on a free transfer after falling out with manager Mikel Arteta.

That departure played a big part in the Gunners documentary All or Nothing.

Only four players have scored more Premier League goals than Aubameyang’s total of 68 in the period since 31 January 2018 – the date he joined Arsenal.

Aubameyang worked with Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel at Borussia Dortmund between 2015 and 2017.

He scored 79 goals in 95 games under the German, 38 more than he netted under any other manager.

This summer the Blues have brought in French defender Wesley Fofana for a fee in the region of £70m, England forward Raheem Sterling from Manchester City for £50m, Senegal defender Kalidou Koulibaly from Napoli for £34m, English midfielder Carney Chukwuemeka from Aston Villa for £20m, Spain left-back Marc Cucurella from Brighton for £60m and Italian midfielder Cesare Casadei from Inter Milan.

A deal for Aubameyang would mean Chelsea chairman Todd Boehly will have spent almost £250m in his first transfer window since buying the club from Roman Abramovich.

  • Moves for reported Chelsea forward targets Gordon and Zaha ruled out

Neither Anthony Gordon nor Wilfried Zaha will be on the move ahead of the transfer deadline, according to their respective managers.

Gordon and Zaha have each been linked with transfers to Chelsea, who are continuing to spend big before the window closes on Thursday.

However, both players played and netted in the Premier League on Tuesday Gordon opening the scoring in Everton’s 1-1 draw at Leeds United, as Zaha did likewise as Crystal Palace were held by Brentford.

And after their respective matches, Everton manager Frank Lampard and Palace boss Patrick Vieira spoke with certainty on the futures of their key men.

“Anthony is too important a player,” Lampard said. “He has showed his worth in the last two games; it is too late [in the window].

“He is going to be special. In the bigger picture, he has an affiliation with the fans. It is a process can we build around that?

“The interest in him is because he is a top player, and why we are so keen to keep him, you saw the reasons why in the last two games. He is our player.”

Vieira added: “I didn’t even put that [the possibility of Zaha leaving] in my head. I didn’t even ask myself that question.

“I’m working with him every day and there is no doubt, there is nothing crossing my mind that something like that will happen.”
