Suspect arrested for abusing 6-year-old over bedwetting

The Ministry of Gender, Children, and Social Protection (MoGCSP) has announced the arrest of suspect involved in the abuse of a six-year-old child at Asamankese over bed-wetting.

According to the Ministry, after strongly condemning the act, which went viral a few days ago, the Ghana Police Service was promptly notified to take action on the matter.

“The Ministry of Gender, Children, and Social Protection (MoGCSP) wishes to inform the general public that, following the circulation of the viral video showing the abuse of a child, the matter was promptly referred to the Ghana Police Service by the Minister for Gender, Children, and Social Protection. The police have since arrested the suspect involved, and the investigation is currently ongoing,” a statement released by the ministry read.

The Ministry cautioned parents, guardians, and caregivers against the use of violent disciplinary methods and urged the adoption of non-violent approaches to child upbringing, as discipline must never result in physical harm to a child.

MoGCSP reiterated its commitment to the protection of children. At the same time, it assured that it will continue to collaborate with law enforcement agencies and stakeholders to prevent such incidents and to ensure that perpetrators of child abuse are held accountable.

“Protecting children is indeed a shared responsibility. Families, communities, traditional and religious leaders, and the public all have a role to play to ensure that children grow up in a safe, caring, and protective environment,” the statement added.

In October, the Central Regional Police Command arrested a forty-nine-year-old fisherman for defiling a 13-year-old girl in Apam, in the Central Region.

His arrest followed a video that went viral on social media capturing the man engaged in the unscrupulous act.

A statement shared by the police stated that, “On October 17, 2025, about 1300 hours, the Apam District Police Command received information that on October 16, 2025, a 49-year-old fisherman by the name Samuel Armah, a.k.a Kofi Nyan, had defiled a 13-year-old girl at Mumford, a suburb of Apam. That the suspect lured the survivor into a ghetto at Mumford and defiled her.Police on receipt of information proceeded to the area, and with the assistance of Mumford, task force arrested the suspect.”

The survivor has since been hospitalised at St. Luke Catholic Hospital for examination and treatment.

The statement further explained that after the matter was reported, the case docket was forwarded to the Central Regional office of the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) for further investigation.

Upon interrogation at the Unit, the suspect admitted to committing the offence. He was then taken into custody by the police to assist with ongoing investigations.

The statement added that the accused person will be formally charged and brought before the court for prosecution on 23 October 2025.

The command has assured the general public that justice will be served in the matter. It has also appealed to residents of Mumford and its surrounding communities to support efforts to arrest the four accomplices identified as Agoogo, Edina, Kwesi Abbam, and Agya Ankoto, who are currently on the run.

The command has urged anyone with credible information about the whereabouts of these suspects to contact them on 18555 or 0299205854, or to report to the nearest police station.

In 2022, the Central Regional Police Command recorded more than 200 defilement cases within 18 months.

Of the total number, about 147 males were arrested with some absconding and are being pursued to face the law.

A police source told the Ghana News Agency that about 101 cases had been taken to court, and 25 suspects had been charged and convicted.

It blamed the disparities in reporting, arresting, and prosecution of cases on the lack of incriminating evidence, cooperation from victims and families, and legal complexities.

The source condemned the act and attributed the rise in defilement cases to poverty and lack of parental guidance and protection of children, which pushed the victims into the hands of pedophiles.

The source encouraged parents to strictly monitor their children in their usage of  mobile phones, including the sites they visited and their relationships.

Some children get paedophiles online asking them to snap half or full naked pictures of themselves and innocently, some of the children fall prey to such antics.

Parents must, however, devise stringent measures to protect children from smartphones, social media, and paedophiles as the police continued to put in all efforts to ensure that criminal activities were reduced across the region, the source said.

A report by the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit said a lot of cases on sexual-based violence were reported to the Unit, but only about five percent was convicted.

That was because some families later received compensations from the perpetrators and decided to settle the matter at home without considering the physical and psychological effects on the victims.

The practice had derailed the fortunes of many girls in terms of reproductive health and socio-economic well-being, the source said.

  • Parenting mum on YouTube detained for child abuse

Parenting mum on YouTube detained for child abuse

A woman from Utah, who used to have a well-liked YouTube channel where she gave parenting advice, was taken into custody by the police on suspicion of child abuse. This happened after her thin and undernourished son managed to run away from their house, as reported by authorities.

Ruby Franke and her business partner Jodi Nan Hildebrandt were taken into custody in Ivins, Utah on Wednesday.

Officials also discovered that Ms. Franke’s 10-year-old daughter was undernourished at her partner’s house.

Ms Franke and her business partner have been charged with two serious crimes of child abuse.

The BBC contacted Ms Franke and Ms Hildebrandt to ask for their thoughts or opinions.

The police say that Ms Franke’s 12-year-old son went out of the window and went to a neighbor’s house to ask for food and water.

According to a statement from the Santa-Clara Ivins Public Safety Department, the neighbor said that the young person looked very skinny and unhealthy, with wounds and duct tape around their arms and legs.

The statement said that when the police arrived, they saw that the boy had severe wounds and was very undernourished.

The officials said that the boy had to go to the hospital because he had serious cuts from being tied up with rope and because he was not getting enough food.

The police got permission to search because of the incident. They took four children and gave them to the family and child services.

Ms Franke, who is 41 years old, became well-known on YouTube during the 2010s. She gained popularity through her channel called 8 passengers, where she talked about being a parent to her six children. Ms Franke has been featured in YouTube videos with Ms Hildebrandt on the ConneXions Classroom counseling website.

The YouTube channel had more than 2 million people who followed it before it was shut down earlier this year.

The person who makes videos online has received criticism before because of her strict parenting methods that she talks about on her YouTube channel. For example, her son said he had to sleep on a bean bag for a long time as a punishment. Franke also talked about not giving meals as a way to discipline.

Some people called child protective services because of the bean bag incident. Franke said the incidents were misunderstood.

According to US media, Shari Franke, the oldest daughter of Ms. Franke, posted on Instagram after her mother was arrested. She said that her family is happy that justice is being served.

“She said that we have been telling the police and CPS about this for many years, and we are happy that they have finally decided to take action. ”

According to the Associated Press, Ms. Franke asked for a lawyer and did not talk to the police. On Thursday, no one knew the name of the lawyer yet.

  • Man ties minor to a tree for ‘stealing’ his oranges

Man ties minor to a tree for ‘stealing’ his oranges

The security services and residents of Akaa Community in the Jasikan Municipality of the Oti Region have intensified their search for a 74-old-man who allegedly tied a nine-year old boy to a tree for “stealing” oranges.

Timothy Gyamfi Mensah, a retired Circuit Supervisor who allegedly tied the Primary School boy with nylon rope to an orange tree for allegedly stealing two oranges, has absconded after the boy was rescued.

The boy was rescued by some community members after several searches by his grandmother later discovered he was tied to the tree after the incident went viral in a video.

Checks by the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in the vicinity indicated that the entire Akaa community was surprised that a retired professional teacher could do that to a school pupil.

Mr. Entwi Baikaa, a native of Akaa and Government Appointee to the Jasikan Municipal Assembly, who confirmed the incident to the GNA in an interview, said the boy went to Mr Mensah’s house and plucked two oranges, but met his predicament when the furious man, grabbed him, and molested him by tying him to the orange tree.

He said unfortunately, the majority of Akaa inhabitants were only informed by social media when the video went viral.

Mr. Baikaa who said Mr. Gyamfi was currently at large, added that after the incident, Madam Ama Bekoe Donkor, the grandmother of the boy took him to the Jasikan Municipal Hospital, where he had been treated and discharged and is currently back at Akaa.

He said a team of Criminal Investigations Department of the Ghana Police Service from Jasikan who were at the community to investigate the case were led to the crime scene by the victim.

Mr. Baikaa, who is also acting as an Assemblyman for Akaa Electoral Area, said the case had been reported to the Jasikan Municipal Chief Executive, Mrs. Elizabeth Kessiwaa Anim-Adjanor, who promised to make sure that justice was served.

Mr. Annobil Isaac, Jasikan Municipal Director of Health Services, when contacted by GNA, said the case had not come to her attention but promised to check from the OPD and get back on Monday.

Meanwhile, the Police have mounted a search to arrest the perpetrator.

  • How 2 US-based NGOs staged, jailed and freed innocent Ghanaian over child trafficking

How 2 US-based NGOs staged, jailed and freed innocent Ghanaian over child trafficking

A recent investigation by BBC Africa Eye has raised concerns about the practices of the US-based anti-human trafficking organization, International Justice Mission (IJM), in Ghana. The documentary titled “The Night They Came for Our Children” alleges that IJM may be involved in falsely separating children from their families as part of their operations.

According to the BBC investigation, there were two specific cases where IJM collaborated with the Ghana Police Service and the social service department in anti-trafficking operations. However, the documentary claims that there was little to no evidence of trafficking in both cases. Despite this, children were taken away from their homes, and their relatives faced prosecution, leading to some of them being imprisoned.

One operation took place in Mogyigna, a community in Northern Ghana, in September 2022. During the operation, four children were forcibly removed from their beds, and two of their uncles were arrested at gunpoint by the police. The children’s grandmother was left with unanswered questions. The BBC investigation suggests that the aggressive nature of the operation was fueled by a target-driven culture within IJM.

The documentary uncovered internal messages within IJM that indicated a different conclusion had been drawn by the charity compared to what was communicated to the police and social services. A legal officer within IJM noted in a message that there were “no elements of trafficking” in the case of one of the children, named Fatima, and two of the other children taken from Mogyigna. However, the organization proceeded with the belief that all four children, aged between five and 11, were at risk of being used for child labor.

The children were separated from their families for four months before an investigation by Ghanaian social services concluded that they had not been trafficked. The children were eventually reunited with their families. Another case highlighted by the BBC investigation involved the removal of a boy and his sibling from their family in 2019, which resulted in their mother, Mawusi Amlade, being sentenced to five years in prison for child trafficking. Her conviction was later overturned after intervention from another US NGO, the Sudreau Global Justice Institute.

The documentary also includes conversations with IJM staff members, where they discuss the pressure to achieve a certain number of rescues and prosecutions each year. The undercover reporter was told that staff members could be denied pay raises or face the risk of dismissal if they did not meet these targets. IJM has denied the allegations of practicing a target-driven culture and maintains that its approach prioritizes the welfare of the child.

The investigation raises significant concerns about the procedures and decision-making processes of IJM in Ghana. The allegations of unjustly separating children from their families and the potential impact on innocent individuals who were prosecuted are deeply troubling. The documentary calls into question the accountability and effectiveness of anti-trafficking operations carried out by IJM and highlights the importance of thorough scrutiny and oversight in such sensitive and complex endeavors.

  • TikTok’s moderators continue to look into child abuse content, despite promises to stop

TikTok’s moderators continue to look into child abuse content, despite promises to stop

Despite Teleperformance’s promise to leave the business after shareholder outrage last year, employees are still analyzing TikTok’s most upsetting content, including child sexual assault.

According to those acquainted with the situation who requested to remain anonymous because they were revealing private information, the Paris-based contractor has approximately 500 individuals working for TikTok in Tunisia. Some of them spend their days searching at detrimental films posted to the social network. According to them, they include pictures of violence, gore, and sexual assault of children and animals.

Teleperformance said it would exit the “highly egregious part of the trust and safety business” in November, weeks after a report alleged Colombian employees moderating TikTok content were subject to occupational trauma from looking at harmful content. This led to a Colombian probe into labor practices and the biggest drop in share price in more than three decades.

The revelations highlight the challenges that social media companies and their content review teams face in protecting their users from extremely disturbing material. While AI tools can screen some of the content, they aren’t good enough to replace human judgment entirely. This means companies like TikTok, Meta Platforms Inc. and Alphabet Inc. still rely on teams of people, often low-paid contractors, to review and remove posts. Repeated exposure to extreme material has been linked to emotional and psychological distress.

At the time, Chief Executive Officer Daniel Julien said Teleperformance would continue to offer content moderation services, but its workers wouldn’t review the most extreme posts, such as child-abuse images. It would work with its clients to find “suitable alternatives for its current business in the field,” the company said in a statement. The announcement was praised by analysts who had grown concerned about possible ESG risks.

Teleperformance Chief Financial Officer Olivier Rigaudy said in an interview that the company’s position hadn’t changed since November and that it was honoring existing contractual commitments with clients. He declined to comment on when individual contracts end, but said they typically last two to three years.

Rigaudy said that the company was also working to define what “highly egregious” content means, depending on different cultures, laws and customers. The process is “extremely complicated” because it involves 40 clients, each with 30 or 40 contracts, he said.

TikTok did not respond to requests for comment.

Workers in Tunis are moderating content posted by users in the Middle-East and North Africa, through a contract that started around last summer, the people said. Tunisia has recently become a hub for TikTok moderation in the region, with the work split between Teleperformance and another subcontractor, Concentrix Corp. A representative for Concentrix declined to comment.

A portion of the Tunis-based TikTok moderators review queues of videos in a restricted-access room. One of the queues can include highly egregious content, one of the people said. Videos are filtered into the different queues by an AI system, the person added, so that more highly trained staff review the most offensive material.

Employees can talk to on-site therapists, whose presence is a requirement from TikTok, the people said. They work in 9-hour shifts and earn around 900 to 1200 dinars ($290 to $385) a month, depending on experience and bonuses for working at night, the people said.

The job includes planned breaks and is favored by some employees over talking to customers in Teleperformance’s more traditional call center business, one of the people said.

  • Social media users call for the arrest of Shatta Bandle over child abuse

Firdaus Iddirus, popularly known as Shatta Bandle, has come under intense criticism on social media over a recent video that has gone viral.

In the said video, he was captured spraying Ghana cedis on his baby, who is believed to be less than 6 months old.

The baby could be described as being in an uncomfortable state as his entire body was covered with money.

In the latter part of the video, the child is seen struggling beneath the heap of cash on him.

On the back of this, some internet users have called on the Ghana Police Service to arrest and warn the internet sensation about his conduct, which they have described as “child abuse.”

Reacting to the video, internet users have called for the arrest and cautioning of Shatta Bandle, as they believe his actions could have suffocated and killed the baby.

A section of them also called on the government to seize custody of the baby from Shatta Bundle because they believed his actions would have detrimental effects on the child.

Shatta Bandle and his wife tied the knot in September 2022 days after his then fiancee gave birth.

In the said video, which has been making rounds on the internet, the unidentified man ruthlessly flogged the baby, while he helplessly cried in the video.

The ‘barbaric’ nature of the abuse has since sparked fury among social media users who have drawn the attention of the police.

The US-based Ghanaian pastor has called for the arrest of all persons involved, including those who sat aloof and watched the incident happen.

Meanwhile, the police have responded to the several calls while stating that efforts are underway to track down the individual involved, have him arrested, and rescue the child.

  • Police places GHS2000 bounty on head of child abuser in viral video

The Police Service is in search of a man who has been sighted in a viral video abusing a toddler.

The viral video sighted by The Independent Ghana showed the male adult flogging the infant with a branch under a tree.

While the child wept bitterly, a voice belonging to the individual who captured the video kept saying “you will hurt the child.”

In a Facebook post, the Police revealed that its officers are working assiduously to arrest the adult and rescue the child after coming into contact with the “horrifying video.”

To bolster investigation, the Police has offered a GH₵2,000.00 reward for anyone who is able to provide credible information that could lead to the arrest of the individual.

Also, members of the public with any information on the suspect’s whereabout are advised to reach the police on 0243809991.

Ghanaians have condemned the merciless action and the said individual who took footage without rescuing the child from the abuse.

Rockhill Chapel founder, Dr. Sonnie Badu in an Instagram post said he was disgusted by the video making rounds.

“I can’t play the full video as I’m already full of tears. Please arrest all three men! The one abusing the child, the one videoing it, and the one sitting down,” he wrote on Instagram.

It is yet to be confirmed as to whether the man in question is related to the minor, who is about 2 or 3 years.

Meanwhile, some Ghanaians have expressed their willingness to adopt the child who was subjected to torture.

  • Child Right International hints at going after celebrities who have social media pages for their children

Bright Appiah, Executive Director of Child Rights International has hinted that very soon, his organization will be going after celebrities who have opened social media pages for their children and using that for commercial purposes.

“Very soon, they will hear from us on some actions we are going to take in respect to how people are engaging their children on Social Media, for commercial purposes, for advertisements, for all kinds of things.

“If the matter comes up before a competent court of jurisdiction, they can go and say all manner of things before the judge,” Bright Appiah said on Okay FM on Monday, April 19, 2021.

He advised that it will be in the best interest of the celebrities to pull all social media pages of their children who are under the age of 18, “otherwise there is an action that will follow very soon”.

The action of Child Rights International follows the incarceration of Akuapem Poloo into a 90-days jail term.

The actress pleaded guilty to the publication of obscene material contrary to the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29), engaging in domestic violence, namely a conduct that, in any way, undermined another person’s privacy or integrity, contrary to Section 1(d) (iii) and 3(2) of the Domestic Violence Act, 2007 (Act732), and engaging in domestic violence, namely conduct that, in any way, detracted or was likely to detract from another person’s dignity and worth as a human being, contrary to Act 732.

Akuapem Poloo was sentenced on her own plea, 90 days for each count, to run concurrently.

She had initially pleaded not guilty to the charges but changed her plea to guilty last Tuesday.

The court, however, deferred the sentencing to Friday, April 16, to allow for a pregnancy test to be conducted on the convict in compliance with section 313A (1) of the Criminal and Other Offences (Procedure) Act, 1960 (Act30).

The pregnancy test came out negative.

    Court’s consideration

In passing sentence, the judge said she considered all the mitigating factors.

Mrs Cann, however, expressed concern about consistent abuse of children in the country, and the incessant rise in publication of obscene images.

Justifying a custodial sentence, she held that Brown did not only infringe on the rights of the child with the publication, but it morally corrupted those who saw the post and also cost the pride and dignity of the country as a whole.

“The court is bothered with posting nude photos on social media. There is no doubt that apart from the canker of rape, defilement, physical assault, the publication of obscene materials is on the increase.

“There is, therefore, the need to uphold our societal values and deal with this canker. The best interest of the child shall be the primary concern of the court,” Ms Cann said.

She asked: “Did she ask for the permission of the child before posting the said picture? Did she respect the child’s rights?”

Providing an answer to the questions, the judge said: “No she did not.”

The judge further noted that Akuapem Poloo had a basic responsibility for the development of her son but rather infringed on her son’s best interest, right to privacy and dignity.

Mrs Cann added that the sentencing of Brown must not only be punitive but must serve as a deterrent to society.

“A custodial sentence will serve as a deterrent,” the presiding judge held.

  • Police nab Islamic scholar who cut off boys finger

The Takoradi Divisional Police Command has arrested Islamic Scholar Abubakar Mustapha, popularly known as Mallam Bawa, who allegedly cut off the finger of an 18-year-old boy accused of stealing a wall clock and other items from an Islamic school.

Mallam Bawa was brought in by some Muslim clerics and family members after efforts by the police to trace him proved futile.

They arrived at the police station around 11:00am on Wednesday, a few minutes after the police had returned from his house to try to effect his arrest.

The brother of the victim had earlier led the police to the house of the four other accomplices including a 15-year-old, who was later released when the complainant informed the police that he was innocent.

Police investigations are underway and it is expected that Mallam Bawa would soon be arraigned before court.

Mallam Bawa is the prime suspect behind the cutting off of the finger of 18-year-old Abubakar Sadick, popularly known as Bin Ladin, whose offence was stealing a wall clock from an Islamic school at Collins Avenue, a suburb of Takoradi.

Mallam Bawa, together with his accomplices, tied the victim with an electric wire, placed his hand on a wooden cluster and cut off the little finger on his right hand.

They then dipped the wounded hand in hot oil.

  • Father gets 2 years for flogging son

The 26-year-old father, who severely beat his three-year-old son for bedwetting, has been slapped with two years of imprisonment by a Kumasi circuit court.

The court presided by Mrs Patricia Amponsah also bonded the convict, Ebenezer Osei Bonsu, for four years to be of good behaviour.

The court deferred to June 9, the sentencing for the crime, after the convict changed his plea of not guilty to the charge of assault and causing harm, to guilty.

Mr Bonsu had been on a GH?30, 000.00 bail with three sureties to be justified, and had earlier told the court that his action was to discipline the child.

The victim was hospitalised with severe wounds on his back and other parts of the body after he whipped him with a belt and a cable for bedwetting.

On his first appearance, the convict was to be remanded for two weeks, but the judge said that due to the coronavirus pandemic, it would be harmful to remand him.

The convict was represented by Lawyer Samuel Amofa Kodua, who requested for bail, saying his client had been in police custody since he was arrested.

Prosecutor, Inspector Regina Oparebea Amoako, had told the court that the suspect would be a threat to the mother and the victim.

Some family members who were at the court premises, were disappointed because they thought the convict would have been sentenced to a fine.

On the first appearance, some of the family members debunked the notion by some people that the convict might have mental illness that could have possibly led to his action against his son.

  • Three-year-old abused boy discharged from hospital

The three-year-old boy who was allegedly brutalised by his father for damaging his phone and urinating on his bed was yesterday discharged from the Manhyia District Hospital where he was admitted for treatment.

The mother, Ms Barbara Obeng, told the Daily Graphic in a telephone interview that the boy was responding to treatment and was much better than when he was sent there.

“We have just been discharged and are preparing to leave the hospital,” she said, at about 12.30 p.m. yesterday.

She said the wounds on his back were healing but added, “we will have to be going back to the hospital for the dressing of the wounds.”

Ms Obeng said a scan on the swelling on the forehead of the boy indicated that there was a collection of blood which had since been drained.

The boy was found with scars at his back and swelling on his forehead.

Earlier this month, the police at the Manhyia Division arrested a 26-year-old national service person, Ebenezer Osei Bonsu, for assaulting and causing harm to his three-year-old son.

The harm was noticed when Barbara, with the help of the police, rescued the boy from the custody of the father at Buokrom in Kumasi where he had gone to celebrate his birthday.

He was later arraigned before the Kumasi Circuit Court on May 14, 2020, where he pleaded not guilty to two counts of causing harm and assault.

The court presided over by Ms Patricia Amponsah, admitted him to bail in the sum of GH¢50,000 with three sureties to be justified.

The case was adjourned to May 21, 2020, for hearing.
