Calls for coach Chris Hughton’s removal amplify after World Cup qualifier defeat

As Ghana lost 1-0 to Comoros in the 2026 World Cup qualifying match, the chorus calling for the dismissal of head coach Chris Hughton became louder.

Fans expressed their disappointment and frustration after the unexpected loss by calling for Hughton’s resignation.

The Black Stars dropped three points behind Comoros in the group standings after two games, failing to live up to the high expectations that surrounded them in Moroni. The loss heightened criticism of Hughton’s coaching choices, specifically his tactical approach and lineup selections.

The discontent among supporters manifested visibly, with many venting their frustrations on social media and various platforms.

Protests against Hughton’s leadership gained traction as supporters expressed worries about Ghana’s chances of qualifying for the World Cup under his direction.

The chorus “Sack Chris Hughton” is resonating strongly within the football community, signaling that Hughton is facing unprecedented pressure.

The focus now turns to the Ghana Football Association’s response and whether they will give in to the demands for change in order to save the World Cup qualifying campaign, as the argument over the coach’s future intensifies.

Chris Hughton, meanwhile, is going to want to hold onto his job and concentrate on getting the team ready for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, which is scheduled to take place in Ivory Coast early in the following year.

Coach Tanko laments Accra Lions’ weak home performance after RTU loss

Accra Lions’ Head Coach, Ibrahim Tanko, has expressed deep concern about his team’s inability to secure a victory at home since the commencement of the 2023/24 Ghana Premier League season.

This concern arose following the team’s Week 6 match against Real Tamale United, which ended in a 3-1 loss for the Lions.

In a post-match interview, Coach Ibrahim Tanko lamented the poor performance of his team at home, emphasizing the unfortunate fact that they have failed to secure a win in all three home games played so far this season.

“It’s very unfortunate for us. We have played three games here and zero points. That is very bad for us,” Coach Ibrahim Tanko said.

Despite his concerns, the Accra Lions’ manager remains optimistic that his team will make progress and soon begin to secure victories.

He assures fans that the team will maintain its dedication in training and rectify any errors as the league progresses.

“But we are a young team and we have to keep on working and hope that we find a win soon. We are a young team. We have to continue working and definitely better times will come. I will talk to the players, we will watch the videos, and correct our mistakes. That’s the best way to go,” Coach Ibrahim Tanko said.

Coach in Zimbabwe charged with sexual misconduct

An official accusation alleging that Zambia’s head coach Bruce Mwape sexually assaulted a player at the Women’s World Cup is being looked into by Fifa.

Mwape is accused of touching one of his players’ chests while they were in New Zealand for a training session on July 29.

“A complaint has been received,” a Fifa spokesperson said.

However, the Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) stated that it was a “surprise” and that “it has not received any such complaint”.

Two days prior to Zambia’s last group match against Costa Rica, which they won 3-1 for their first World Cup triumph, the alleged event is believed to have occurred during a training session.

The spokesperson for Fifa further stated, “Fifa takes any allegations of misconduct extremely seriously and has a clear process in place for anyone in football who wants to report an incident.”

After placing third in Group C, Zambia was eliminated and has since gone home.

  • Girmay to bring cycling to every African country – Former Coach projects

Girmay to bring cycling to every African country – Former Coach projects

Former coach of Eritrean cyclist Biniam Girmay, Jean-Jacques Henry, has said that Girmay has the potential to promote cycling across every single country in Africa.

Girmay, who made history as the first black African to win a stage in a Grand Tour during the Giro d’Italia last year, has continued to achieve success in his cycling career. In June, he secured a victory in the second stage of the Tour de Suisse.

As an official of the International Cycling Union (UCI), Jean-Jacques Henry, who previously coached Girmay when he first arrived in Europe, holds the belief that further accomplishments await Girmay at the upcoming Tour de France, which is scheduled to begin on July 1st in Bilbao.

“The general classification, I don’t think he can (win) but he has a chance to win a stage,” Henry told BBC World Service.

“The Tour de France will be an even bigger event and he’ll bring (a win) to every single country in Africa.

“He is already very popular everywhere in Africa. All the people who love cycling will watch the tour and, if he wins, I think all Africans people will be proud.”

Giro d’Italia to Tour de France

Girmay, racing for Team Intermarche, beat Dutchman Mathieu van der Poel in a sprint for the line to win stage 10 of the Giro d’Italia – the victory providing an iconic image.

The fact it was his debut year on the Grand Tour increased the magnitude of the achievement.

Indeed foreshadowing the moment, Girmay said that winning a tour stage would be one of cycling’s “best moments”.

“I think he’s opening a lot of people’s eyes,” Maude le Roux, 26, told the BBC. The South African along with Ethiopian, Selam Amha Gerefiel, is part of the UCI’s World Cycling Centre (WCC) team in Aigle, Switzerland, where Girmay first rode in Europe.

“There are cyclists in Africa that need help to come to Europe. Cycling is not just a European sport and, being a rider from Africa, it’s hard to come into Europe.

“Binyam is shedding some light on that. The teams are starting to look for riders in Africa, which is amazing.

“Just the fact that he was on this team, obviously now we have a woman’s team, but that he was in the centre – I think I speak for me and Salaam saying that gives us hope for the future that we can make it and we’re here for a reason.”

Gerefiel, 26, added: “He’s a teacher for us so I’m looking to be better and work hard like him. For me he is a model.”

Biniam Girmay (centre) wins a stage of the Giro de Italia
Girmay became the first black African to win a stage of the Grand Tour when he claimed victory at the Giro de Italia in 2022

Cycling’s World Championships will be held in Africa for the first time in 2025 in Kigali, Rwanda.

Both the east African event in two years and Giray’s prominence mark the rise of the sport on the continent.

“Cycling is Eritrea’s number one sport,” Henry continued. “They have the same potential as Kenyans who are champions in athletics.

“If you transfer this potential – endurance potential on the bicycle – they can be the best in the world.”

So what of the man that Henry coached who would go on to put Eritea and African cycling on the map.

Would he feel the weight of a continent on his shoulders?

“When he was with us he was not stressed at all – quite shy – but the good thing is that he was happy with everybody. Just enjoying life – smiling all the time to everybody,” Henry said.

“This is something very important for high level athletes just to enjoy life and without any stress.

“Many riders are stressed by the results, by not having the right performance at the right moment – not achieving the goals. But for him – he didn’t have that kind of choice.”

    Pastries and cobblestones

Among the choices that Girmay did have related to adapting to life in Europe and the new training regimes.

“He was a junior in 2018 when he came here for the first time,” Henry said. “We had him in July, August and September, to prepare for the World Championship in Innsbruck. It was too cold for him. It was 4 July – it was warm – but it was too cold for him.

“So it was quite tough to prepare him because we had to change a lot of things, his lifestyle, his routines. You can eat just vegetables or pastries and ‘OK, it’s good’ but you need to have a great balance between these kinds of foods with some carbohydrates or with some proteins.”

The next challenge for Girmay was the surfaces in Europe, something he would eventually overcome when wining the 78th edition of the Gent-Wevelgem one-day classic on the famous cobbled streets of Belgium.

“He didn’t like the cobblestones,” said Henry. “He always told us: ‘I don’t like that. I don’t want to race on cobblestones.’ Now he can win those races in the world tour.

“Now he has changed his mind. he enjoyed it. To win these kinds of races, you have to enjoy those cobblestone sections.”

Girmay claimed the second stage of June’s Tour de Suisse – this after recovering from a horror crash at the Tour of Flanders which wiped out most of the peloton.

Henry still keeps a close eye on his protege, who he says is a “special rider and sprinter” but is “not a pure climber, he will not be so efficient in big mountains”.

Beyond the rider, however, Henry believes Girmay’s impact on the sport is only just at the start line.

“After his career he can be someone who can help to develop cycling in Africa and in Eritrea, and give his experience.

“He can turn into a symbol, as African athletes can succeed in Europe and in the best races in the world.”

  • French prosecutors open probe on skate coach accused of raping teenage trainee

French prosecutors opened an investigation into claims of rape and sexual abuse of minors in figure skating on Tuesday as details emerged of allegations made 20 years ago against the coach at the heart of the case.

The probe, hailed as a “strong signal” by French Sports Minister Roxana Maracineanu and in which “the words of the victims must be heard”, will focus on claims made by former world championship bronze medallist Sarah Abitbol.

In her autobiography published last week, Abitbol accused coach Gilles Beyer of raping her several times from 1990 to 1992 when she was between the ages of 15 and 17.

“He (Beyer) started to do horrible things leading to sexual abuse and I was raped at 15,” said Abitbol, now 44, in a video interview with L’Obs.

The investigation will also “attempt to identify all the other victims who suffered… offences of the same nature”, Paris-based prosecutor Remy Heitz said.

Abitbol’s claims coincided with sports daily L’Equipe publishing an investigation in which three other skaters accused Beyer and two other coaches, Jean-Roland Racle and Michel Lotz, of abuse and rape when they were minors.

Further allegations of underage sexual abuse emerged from former swimmers and tennis players.

On Friday, 62-year-old Beyer admitted to having had “intimate” and “inappropriate” relations with Abitbol, telling AFP he was “sincerely sorry”.

“I acknowledge having had intimate relationships with her,” Beyer said in a statement.

“If my memories of the exact circumstances differ from hers, I am aware that, given my duties and her age at the time, these relationships were inappropriate.”

Racle has denied the accusations while Lotz has not commented.

Sports Minister Maracineanu has called for the president of France’s ice skating federation, Didier Gailhaguet, to resign, saying he “cannot absolve himself of his moral and personal responsibility”.

But after a meeting at the federation’s Paris headquarters on Tuesday, Gailhaguet said he would not make a decision on whether to step down until the investigation had concluded.

“I, as federation president, will await the result of this investigation before making any decision on the resignation the sports minister asked for,” the 66-year-old said.

    Powerful figure

Maracineanu, a former swimming world champion, does not have the power to sack Gailhaguet but has intimated that the federation would face state sanctions if he remains.

Gailhaguet, who is due to hold a press conference on Wednesday, has been the most influential man in French ice skating since he first became president in 1998, some years after the alleged offences.

He has headed the federation ever since apart from a three-year hiatus between 2004 and 2007 which followed a judging scandal at the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City.

He was suspended by the International Skating Union for three years from 2002 and duly gave up, temporarily, the presidency of the French federation.

Gailhaguet’s accession to the presidency opened the door for Beyer to take charge of the French national team.

Two years later, another skater made a complaint against Beyer which was followed up at ministry level but not acted on by prosecutors.

The report of that investigation, which has been seen by AFP, shows that Gailhaguet was aware of the nature of the allegations against Beyer.

In a letter addressed to him and dated February 8, 2000, the parents of a young skater outline Beyer’s inappropriate behaviour towards their daughter, who was 17, during a training camp.

According to the letter which relates to an incident in July 1999, Beyer was “under the effects of alcohol” when he sat on the girl’s bed. After talking he said he would leave but asked if he could kiss her. She declined.

“It would be desirable, not to say essential … that this gentleman never again gets close to adolescent skaters who are minors,” the parents said in the letter.

Beyer did not comment on those claims when contacted by AFP.

The 2000 inquiry led the sports ministry to remove him from his technical role at the federation, but he remained a coach at club level and held an executive position at the federation until 2018.

On Tuesday, former Olympic champion Gwendal Peizerat, who won the 2002 ice dance gold with Marina Anissina, said the revelations were “the tip of the iceberg”.

“We’re talking about rape, harassment … Didier Gailhaguet is not the moral example we should be showing our children,” said Peizerat, who unsuccessfully challenged Gailhaguet as skating chief in a 2014 election.
