  • New York comedian receives harsh criticism over joke about Malaysia

New York comedian receives harsh criticism over joke about Malaysia

In Malaysia and Singapore, a comedian in New York who joked about the safety of Malaysian airlines in an apparent allusion to the missing of flight MH370 has triggered a fierce protest.

Controversy over the joke by lawyer-turned comedian Jocelyn Chia at Manhattan’s Comedy Cellar erupted soon after a short clip of her stand-up performance was posted online earlier this week.

Chia’s bit had centered on the uneasy past between Singapore and Malaysia, which were once part of the same country. She led off with a suggestion that since the two had separated in 1965, Singapore had risen to become a first-world country while Malaysia had allegedly remained a “developing” one.

She then went on to take aim at Malaysian airplanes by suggesting they “can’t fly,” before making what many have taken as a reference to Malaysia Airlines flight MH370, the Beijing-bound flight which went missing along with 239 passengers and crew after taking off from Kuala Lumpur on March 8, 2014.

What happened to the flight has never been conclusively established, though pieces of debris suspected of belonging to it have occasionally been discovered.

“What? Malaysia Airlines going missing not funny, huh?” she quipped to laughter, before delivering her punchline: “Some jokes don’t land.”

Police carry debris from an unidentified aircraft found in the coastal area of Saint-Andre de la Reunion, in the east of the French Indian Ocean island of La Reunion, on July 29, 2015. An air safety expert did not exclude it could be a part of the Malaysia Airlines flight MH370.

The joke has caused a wave of controversy in both Malaysia and Singapore. In Malaysia, the youth wing of the United Malays National Organization (UMNO) – one of the biggest political parties in the country – marched to the US embassy in Kuala Lumpur on Friday to protest what they see as an insult.

About 100 protesters and representatives handed a memorandum to the US diplomatic outpost, according to the youth group’s chief Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh.

“This is something that is unacceptable for the whole nation and we are here,” he said, adding, “freedom of speech must come with sensitivity.”

Singapore meanwhile has distanced itself from Chia, who according to her website is originally from the Asian city state, and apologized to Malaysia.

“The Singapore government does not condone words or actions that cause harm or hurt to others and Chia,” said Vanu Gopala Menon, Singapore’s High Commissioner to Malaysia in a statement online. “(Chia) does not in any way reflect our views,” he added.

Menon said Chia’s joke contained “gratuitously offensive comments,” adding, “I sincerely apologize to all Malaysians for her hurtful remarks.”

In a tweet, Singapore’s Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan said Chia “certainly does not speak for Singaporeans” and he was “appalled by her horrendous statements.”

“We treasure our ties with family and friends in Malaysia, and are sorry for the offense and hurt caused to all Malaysians,” he added.

His Malaysian counterpart, Dr Zambry Abd Kadir, accused the comedian of lacking sensitivity and empathy toward Malaysians and the families of the victims.

“This video also clearly depicts behavior that is contrary to the values of an Asian country that is known for its manners and morals,” he said, according to state-run news agency Bernama.

CNN has reached out to Jocelyn Chia, her agent and the Comedy Cellar for comment.

As of Sunday, Chia’s Facebook and Instagram accounts were no longer available to view.

  • Joke costs Chinese comedian $2 million for angering officials with military joke

Joke costs Chinese comedian $2 million for angering officials with military joke

An entertainment company has paid more than $2 million in fines as a result of a joke made by a Chinese stand-up comedian that made a loose allusion to a term used to describe the nation’s military.

The expensive penalty emphasises the fine balance comedians must walk in tightly controlled China, where politics is rarely amusing, and the serious repercussions for anyone in the entertainment business who are perceived to cross the line.

After utilising a word connected to the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) during his comedy presentation at the Century Theatre in Beijing over the weekend, Li Haoshi, better known by his stage name House, attracted the attention of authorities this week.

As the official backlash grew, Li canceled all his performances while the entertainment company that represents him, Shanghai Xiaoguo Culture Media, issued an apology.

On Wednesday the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Culture and Tourism said a subsidiary of the firm would be fined $1.91 million and deprived of $189,000 it made in “illegal gains” – an apparent reference to Li’s two live gigs last weekend. The company was also indefinitely suspended from holding any performances in the capital.

The statement accused Li of “seriously insulting” the military and “causing bad social impact.”

Li will be subject to further investigation alongside his agent and other relevant staff, the bureau added.

The culture authority has not elaborated on details of the investigation but in 2021 China enacted a law to ban any insult and slander on military personnel.

To international audiences Li’s joke might appear innocuous.

During the show, he began a skit about how he had adopted two stray dogs since moving to Shanghai.

He went on to say that their chase after a squirrel one day reminded him of eight words, before he unleashed the controversial punchline, according to audio posted to Chinese social media site Weibo.

“Fine style of work, capable of winning battles,” he said, flipping a well known Chinese Communist Party slogan referring to the PLA.

The phrase was first uttered in 2013 by Chinese leader Xi Jinping, who also chairs the military, when he set out a list of qualities he commanded from the nation’s army. It has since been repeated at various official occasions and in state media.

Shanghai Xiaoguo Culture Media is one of the biggest stand-up comedy show producers in the country.

In handing down its penalty in a statement on Wednesday, authorities in Beijing concluded that Li’s Saturday show contained “a plot amounting to a serious insult to the People’s Liberation Army and causing a bad social influence.”

“We will never allow any company or individual to wantonly slander the glorious image of the People’s Liberation Army on a stage in the [Chinese] capital, never allow the people’s deep feelings for the soldiers to be hurt, and never allow serious subjects to be turned into an entertainment,” the culture authority said.

Li had already apologized on Chinese social media platform Weibo, where he has 136,000 followers.

“I will take all the responsibility and call off all my performances to deeply reflect and reeducate myself,” he wrote on Monday.

Shanghai Xiaoguo Culture Media previously said it had suspended the comedian from all productions indefinitely.

Stand-up comedy has gained traction in China in recent years against the backdrop of an emerging trend of televised contests that pit witty comedians against one another.

After the penalties were announced, some Chinese internet users took to the Twitter-like Weibo platform to praise the official body’s decision.

“Well-deserved. Stand-up comedy is a low form of art that thinks it is cultural,” one user wrote.

But others feared it may lead to a further crackdown on comedy.

China imposes stringent censorship on issues it deems sensitive – from women’s cleavage to criticism of the Communist Party. That ideological control has tightened under Xi’s rule, widely impacting the entertainment industry.

  • Chinese stand-up comic asked to apologise as official get offended by a military joke

Chinese stand-up comic asked to apologise as official get offended by a military joke

A Chinese stand-up comedian has cancelled all of his shows after an official investigation into the agency that represents him and backlash from the government for a joke he made that made a casual reference to the military of the nation.

The uproar highlights the fine line comedians must walk in tightly controlled China, where politics is rarely made light of.

As reported by state-affiliated media Jimu News, Li Haoshi attracted attention from law enforcement after using a word connected to the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) while telling a tale about two stray dogs in a recent comedy show.

He later expressed his “deep remorse and regret” in a social media post on Monday, saying that he had used “an extremely unsuitable analogy to bring bad feeling and association to the audience.”

“I will take all the responsibility and call off all my performances to deeply reflect and reeducate myself,” said the comedian, who goes by the name House and has 136,000 fans on Chinese social media platform Weibo.

The controversy stemmed from his show at the Century Theater in Beijing on Saturday, when he joked about how he had adopted two stray dogs since moving to Shanghai.

He went on to say that one day his two energetic canines gave chase to a squirrel, which reminded him of eight words, before he delivered the controversial punchline, according to audio posted to Chinese social media site Weibo.

It has since been repeated at various official occasions.

Li’s joke drew a round of laughter at the show, as shown by audio heard by CNN, but also prompted unease from one member of the audience, who Jimu News reported took to Weibo to complain that the joke was inappropriate.

The post set off an intense debate on Weibo over whether Li was being funny or disrespectful, gaining the attention of authorities who seemed unamused.

On Monday Beijing Cultural Law Enforcement Agency launched an investigation into Shanghai Xiaoguo Culture Media, the company that represents Li, state media Beijing Evening News reported.

Shanghai Xiaoguo Culture Media described the joke as “inappropriate” before offering an apology in a statement on Monday.

“We have suspended his work indefinitely,” said the production firm, adding that it would “step up education and training on actors to maintain the order in the industry.”

Without naming the comedian, Communist Party mouthpiece People’s Daily said even comedians should respect limits when it comes to jokes, and it would be a mistake to put humor before all things.

A new genre of talk shows featuring quick-witted stand-up comedians pitting themselves against one another in televised contests have proven to be a big hit among young audiences in China in recent years.

Comedians make a name for themselves by taking part in these shows and often expand their careers to live shows – as Li did.

But performers have to stick to pre-approved scripts – based strictly on non-political topics – making the indirect military reference that landed Li on the wrong side of the authorities this time incredibly rare.

China imposes stringent censorship on issues it deems sensitive from women’s cleavage to criticisms against the Communist Party across all platforms, be it online social media sites or traditional mass media.

That ideological control has tightened under Xi, widely impacting the entertainment industry.

In 2021, China also passed a law banning slander and insults against military personnel.

Last May, former investigative journalist Luo Changping was sentenced to seven months in prison and ordered to offer a public apology for calling Chinese soldiers portrayed in a blockbuster movie about the Korean war “stupid.”

Li’s sense of humor divided users on Chinese social media.

One user on Weibo questioned: “How come the crowd was still laughing?”

Another user on WeChat, an instant messenger app that also allows users to blog, was more understanding.

“This is not a good analogy and it’s not funny. But this actor had no intent to insult the soldiers,” the person wrote.

He also attacked Adebayor for unfollowing him on social media during his relapse.

“Who do you think teaches me? Who do you think has shaped me, nourished me, informed me? From my mum, my gran, my aunt – all the black women in my life,” he told the audience.

Noah was relatively unknown in the US when he took over the prestigious satirical programme from Jon Stewart, who had built up a huge following.

In his goodbye monologue, he references the fact that he first found it hard to fill the seats in the studio but over the last seven years, Noah himself has brought in a younger enthusiastic audience.

  • Mr. Ibu recounts how he was nearly poisoned to death by someone he once helped

A well-known Nigerian comedian and actor, John Ikechukwu Okafor, better known as Mr. Ibu, has described a horrifying incident that nearly cost him his life.

The seasoned actor admitted that he had naively assisted someone who had afterward repaid him with wickedness by poisoning his food.

Speaking to the Nigerian-based The Punch Newspaper, Mr. Ibu hinted that he is now extremely cautious about the people he contacts as a result of this painful and upsetting experience.

“These days, I am usually sceptical because I later found out that it was somebody I had helped in the past (who poisoned me),” he stated.

The situation according to the actor would have been a deadly one, “If not for God, the result would have been bad. As I speak with you now, I am still being treated somewhere in Guzape, Abuja.”

With a fearful heart, the actor pleaded with the Nigerian Federal Government to prioritize the lives and well-being of creative arts players, because they contribute significantly to the Republic’s socioeconomic growth.

He added, “I expect the Federal Government to act on this. Whether we like it or not, we (actors) are serving the government. The movies we make are for the benefit of the general public. If the government wants to better protect us, they can do it.”
