ECG not responsible for missing containers under Customs, GPHA – Ex-ECG MD

A former Managing Director of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has refuted claims that the power distributor should be blamed for the disappearance of over 1,300 containers, stressing that they were under the custody of the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) and the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA).

“Containers that are in the custody of Customs and Ghana Ports and Harbours—what does that have to do with ECG? Did the containers go missing while in ECG’s care?” he questioned.

According to him, ECG had no role in managing the containers once they arrived at the port, and there are proper tracking systems in place to locate them.

“Even if a container is lost at sea, it can still be traced because it has a unique identification number. So did they track the numbers and fail to find them, or are they only relying on a physical count?” he asked.

He further clarified that during his tenure, the only container-related matter involving ECG was an auction conducted by Customs, which he had attempted to halt.

Describing the allegations as a “witch-hunt,” he emphasized that ECG should not be implicated in a matter that falls under the jurisdiction of Customs and GPHA.

His remarks come amid ongoing investigations into the missing containers, with authorities working to establish accountability.
