  • COP George Mensah is a devil; he wants to destroy the Police Service — Hon Ashaimah

COP George Mensah is a devil; he wants to destroy the Police Service — Hon Ashaimah

Former Member of Parliament for Buem Constituency, Mr Daniel Kosi Ashiamah, has described COP George Alex Mensah’s attitude at the public hearing on leaked tape to oust the IGP as devlish.

According to Mr. Ashaimah, some unwaqrranted comments passed by the commissioner of police are all a ploy to destroy and render the police service to nothing.

But the former MP has profusely stated that he will fail in all his attempts.

“He has seen that he is going home, so he is doing all he can to destroy everything before he lives. He is like a witch. Before a witch in a family dies, he kills all the children in the house. That is what he is trying to do. Telling us that he heard Mahama and Dampare are close. He is a devil! But he will not succeed. We must tell him in the face,” the former MP expressed.

He added: “If you want to lobby to become an IGP, you must bring the record of your performance so that Ghanaians and Nana [President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo] will assess and give you the IGP position. Don’t go and tell somebody that Dampare is not doing his work so we should take you.”

Meanwhile, the member of parliament for Builsa South, is calling for the removal of COP Alex Mensah and Superintendent George Asare from their positions within the Ghana Police Service.

He asserts that both senior police officers have displayed misconduct and insubordination, rendering them unfit for their roles.

Dr. Apaak urged the Police Council to promptly suspend the two policemen in light of the ongoing investigation and revelations surrounding their behavior.

During separate testimonies before the committee, COP Mensah criticized IGP George Akuffo Dampare as the worst in Ghana’s history, citing low morale within the service due to mismanagement. Superintendent, on the other hand, questioned the IGP’s competence but stated he would discuss this matter privately. He accused the IGP of orchestrating the recording.

Dr. Apaak emphasized the significance of addressing the interests of the two officers in response to the ongoing developments.

  • Wa: IGP sets committees to investigate murder of 21-year-old man by police

Wa: IGP sets committees to investigate murder of 21-year-old man by police

The Inspector General of Police has formed two independent committees to investigate the killing of 27-year-old Abu-Bakr Shahid, who was allegedly slain by the Police Anti-Robbery Unit in Wa, according to the Director General of Police in charge of administration, COP Christian Tetteh Yohuno.

Speaking at Wa as a leader of the Police delegation sent by the IGP to commiserate with the family of Shahid, COP Christian Tetteh Yohuno assured the family that the Police administration is leaving no stone unturned in their bid to get to the truth of the matter

Abu-Bakr Shahid was allegedly shot dead by the Police on Wednesday, March 8 on suspicion of being an armed robber.

The incident sparked a protest in Wa by members of his family, friends and residents of Dondoli where he hails from.

The family has strenuously denied the Police’s assertion and are calling for justice for him.

  • How the COP deal went down

The sun has come up again here, ending long two nights in Sharm el-Sheikh.

There have been exhausted negotiators, high peaks of drama and low moments of confusion.

Talks were deadlocked until Thursday when the EU put forward a proposal that rich nations would pay for climate damage in poor countries.

But progress was slow on Friday, and the 1800 deadline slowly ticked by – cue the start of bets on how late this COP would go.

    Saturday

Suddenly on Saturday, the EU, quickly followed by other nations, dramatically revealed they were willing to walk away from COP without a deal. I spent the morning lurking around country offices trying to find out what was happening. The New Zealand delegation office kindly supplied me with an excellent coffee – but the important questions was – is COP collapsing?

  • US cop show cancelled after George Floyd death

One of America’s longest running reality TV cop shows has been cancelled amid nationwide protests against police brutality over George Floyd’s death.

Cable network Paramount said it had no plans for Cops, which first aired more than three decades ago, to return.

The future of another reality ride-along cop show, Live PD, is in doubt.

The A&E cable TV network hit has been engulfed by controversy since the death of another unarmed black man who was heard pleading: “I can’t breathe.”

Cops ran for 25 years after first being broadcast on Fox in 1989, before it was taken up by Paramount’s predecessor, Spike TV, in 2013.

Its 33rd season had been due to air on the ViacomCBS-owned network on Monday.

A Paramount spokesperson told US media on Tuesday: “Cops is not on the Paramount Network and we don’t have any current or future plans for it to return.”

The show was temporarily pulled from air late last month as protests gathered pace over the death of Floyd, an unarmed black man who died on 25 May in Minneapolis, Minnesota, after a police officer knelt on his neck. He was heard saying: “I can’t breathe.”

Since Floyd’s death, some activists and opinion writers have called for cop shows to be yanked from air.

They have argued that the genre portrays police officers as action-heroes and stigmatises African-American communities.

The future of Live PD, another programme that follows police on patrol around the nation, is also uncertain.

Last week the A&E cable network pulled episodes and said it was evaluating whether to bring the show back.

A&E said its decision was out of “respect for the families of George Floyd and others who have lost their lives”.

Live PD is under scrutiny following last year’s death of Javier Ambler, a black man from Texas.

The 40-year-old father-of-two died on 28 March 2019 following a 22-minute police chase that ended in the city of Austin.

Live PD was filming sheriff’s deputies when the pursuit began.

Travis County District Attorney Margaret Moore has accused A&E of failing to hand over its video footage of Ambler’s death to investigators.

Williamson County deputies reportedly began chasing Ambler because he failed to dim his headlights to oncoming traffic.

Police body-camera video shows Ambler – who had been on his way home from a poker night with friends – on the ground with several officers.

Ambler tells the sheriff’s deputies he has congestive heart failure and repeatedly says: “I can’t breathe.”

A post-mortem examination said Ambler died of congestive heart failure and hypertensive cardiovascular disease associated with morbid obesity “in combination with forcible restraint”.

The death was ruled a homicide.
