  • National Media Commission praises media for coverage on coronavirus

The National Media Commission (NMC) has praised the media for showing solidarity towards the fight against coronavirus through its reportage.

It has however asked practitioners to maintain balance in their news items by relying on official sources for accurate information on the pandemic so as not to downplay its gravity.

General Secretary of the NMC, Mr. George Sarpong, in a statement issued in Accra yesterday noted that while the media may be concerned about reducing anxiety among the public on the disease, “jokes”, must not be entertained.

“In the legitimate attempt to reduce public anxiety and provide hope in this moment of disquiet, some media have resorted to making jokes about the disease.

“While humor may have its place in reducing anxieties in moments of national stress, it also carries the risk of minimizing the sense of urgency and possibly leading to complacency in public response,” he warned.

The Commission, therefore, reminded “the media that in a situation like this, the balance still remains our greatest professional virtue and the best way to achieve that is to rely on the official sources for accurate information.”

  • Coronavirus and the workforce behind the testing in Ghana

Coronaviruses (CoV) are large family of viruses that causes illness ranging from the common cold to more severe diseases such as Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS-CoV) and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS-CoV).

Coronaviruses are zoonotic, meaning they are transmitted between animals and people. Detailed investigations found that SARS-CoV was transmitted from civet cats to humans and MERS-CoV from dromedary camels to humans. Several known coronaviruses are circulating in animals that have not yet infected humans.

The pandemic coronavirus Infection (COVID-19) is a new strain that was discovered in December 2019 in Wuhan, China after the outbreak of person-to-person transmission.

Globally, over one hundred and fifty thousand (150,000) cases have been confirmed with more than five thousand (5,000) deaths recorded and over seventy thousand (70,000) cases recovered. In Africa, as at 16th March 2020, three hundred and seventy-six (376) cases have been confirmed with seven (7) deaths recorded and thirty-nine (39) cases recovered.

    Ghana has six (6) cases confirmed without any record of death and recovery. The President of the Republic immediately addresses the nation on measures taken to combat the spread of COVID-19 in the country. Earlier on, the Ministry of Health (MoH) and Ghana Health Service (GHS) have also taken measures to curb the spread of the disease. These measures include but not limited to;

    1. Alert message sent to all regions in Ghana on the outbreak in addition to guidance information on the disease.

    2. Enhanced surveillance at points of entry especially the Kotoka International Airport.

    3. Laboratory testing of COVID-19 in suspected human cases by Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research.

However, Ghana currently has two testing facilities the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research and Kumasi Centre for Collaborative Research in Tropical Medicine.

The questions most Ghanaians are asking are –

    1. Why only these two testing facilities for COVID-19 in Ghana?

The answer is that Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research and Kumasi Centre for Collaborative Research in Tropical Medicine are the two well-equipped laboratories with resources needed for testing the pandemic coronavirus (COVID-19).

Since the outbreak of the COVID-19, the most widely used testing method is the Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR). It is widely used in virology and molecular biology to rapidly make millions of copies of a specific DNA sample for scientific analyses. The two (2) most common types of PCR used are the Nested RT-PCR and the Real-time RT-PCR. Real-time RT-PCR has emerged as a technological innovation and is playing an ever-increasing role in clinical diagnostics and research laboratories. Due to its capacity to generate both qualitative and quantitative results, it is considered an essential device. In Ghana, the Real-time RT-PCR is employed by professionals to rapidly detect the pandemic coronavirus infection. Considering the capacity, application and importance of this device, most government health facilities should be provided with at least one PCR machine.

The COVID-19 should be a wake-up call for government to well-equip the Public Health Laboratories, Teaching Hospital Laboratories and Regional Hospital Laboratories with equipment and accoutrements needed for the testing of special cases like the current coronavirus. Let me echo that “a hospital without a well-equipped laboratory is deficient and does not qualify to be a hospital.”

    2. Who are the professionals behind the testing of the pandemic Coronavirus (COVID-19) in Ghana?

The answer is Medical Laboratory Scientists also known as the “disease detectives.”

These professionals generate accurate and reliable laboratory data needed to aid in diagnosis and treatment of a disease. “There is no accurate diagnosis without laboratory testing.” The services rendered by these committed professionals are very vital in quality healthcare delivery and that they continued to play a vital role in disease prevention, detection, surveillance and patient management in the country.

As a concerned citizen of this country, I urge the government to give these professionals the needed attention and support to make our health system a better one. Ghanaians deserve better and a health system without adequate and quality laboratory services is of no use to the patients and the citizens at large.

Also, more laboratories should be equipped to handle some special cases like the current COVID-19 to minimize the transportation of samples from one facility to the other for testing.

Finally, I urge fellow Ghanaians to join the campaign on the pandemic COVID-19 sensitization in order to increase awareness. Tell a friend to tell a friend, CORONAVIRUS is real. Be on guard.

  • Akufo-Addo, NIA boss must be held responsible for any coronavirus case in E/R – Afriyie Ankrah

Director of Elections for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Elvis Afriyie Ankrah says President Akufo-Addo together with Executive Secretary of the National Identification Authority (NIA), Prof Kenneth Attafuah must be held responsible for any case of coronavirus in the Eastern Region.

According to him, the NIA is an agency under President Akufo-Addo and that the President has knowledge of all activities the NIA involves in, including the Ghana Card registration.

Following the rapid spread of the pandemic in the country as cases recorded currently hits 11, the Ghana Medical Association in a statement yesterday called on the NIA to suspend with immediate effect the ongoing mass registration exercise in the Eastern Region indicating that it was in the interest of public health and safety to suspend the exercise.

However, in a radio interview today, the Eastern Regional Minister, Eric Kwakye Daffour said the ongoing Ghana Card registration in the region will continue despite warnings to suspend it.

He argued that registration is regarded as an essential service therefore it cannot be halted.

But responding to the development in a radio interview today, monitored by primenewsghana.com, Elvis Afriyie Ankrah stated that the President together with Ken Attafuah must be held responsible if a case of Covid-19 is recorded in the Eastern Region

”If there is an outbreak beyond this the President should be held accountable together with Ken Attafuah. People should be held accountable because this is no joke. It’s between life and death. If the President has stated measures and an agency under him is doing the contrary, wouldn’t he call them to order? This thing has the potential of causing a big problem for us”

He further indicated that “Let’s be practical and stop propaganda. Ghanaians will struggle to get their ID cards done and before 25 people will be selected there will be disagreement. For instance, if 25 people are selected out of 300 people, social distancing will not be observed. Lives of Ghanaians are been endangered. NIA is directly under the authority President. So the President cannot tell me that he has no knowledge of what is going on”.

Meanwhile, two Ghanaians have sued the National Identification Authority (NIA) over their decision to keep the mass registration exercise ongoing despite the Presidential directive against public gathering in the wake of coronavirus.

It is obvious we are not in normal times with the heightened threat of the deadly coronavirus literally leaving everyone in the country in a pensive mood.

Aside that, it is unfathomable to realize that the utmost religious Ghanaian has been barred from attending church or going to the mosque for Friday or Saturday or Sunday service or any other day at least for the next four weeks.

With the threat of the COVID-19 leaving a lot of casualty and death in its wake elsewhere in the world and even on the continent.

Many Ghanaians have been stricken with fear and panic and it was the ideal time for churches to have enjoyed a boom in attendance as everyone would have sought refuge in church to try and pray it off but due to the government’s ban on public gathering, churches and mosque’s across the country have been closed at least for the next four weeks.

Some church leaders have been angered by the situation ostensibly because of the financial toll it will have on them as they can not take their usual ‘collection’, offertory and tithe.

Some of them have resorted to online church services through digital platforms such as Facebooklive, periscope and other video streaming sites.

But the big question is how will they take the cash as was asked by Prophet Kumchacha on Wednesday 18th March 2020.

Most churches have now resorted to mobile money and other smart payment platforms to receive their offertory and tithes as the government’s directive on no church service bites hard on churches at least for the next four weeks.

  • Minority declines to support ‘Coronavirus’ Bill to restrict movement under certificate of urgency

The Minority in Parliament has declined to support the Imposition of Restrictions Bill, 2020 aimed at helping to prevent the spread of the Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in Ghana under a certificate of urgency.

The Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Ms Gloria Afua Akuffo, on Wednesday, March 18, 2020 laid the Imposition of Restrictions Bill, 2020 before Parliament.

The bill, which is to back President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s directives on measures to curb the spread of the COVID-19 in Ghana, is intended to provide a legislative framework, in consonance with the Constitution, for the imposition of restrictions as a quick and effective means of intervention to address emergencies.

However, the Minority in Parliament has indicated that they cannot support the Bill under a certificate of urgency.

The Graphic Online understands the Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Ms Gloria Akuffo is in Parliament Thursday afternoon meeting the Constitutional and Legal Committee of  Parliament, praying that it should approve the Restrictions Bill to be considered under a certificate of urgency.

The Minister of Information, Mr Kojo Oppong Nkrumah in a tweet said: “Unfortunately, the minority has declined to support the view that the bill be considered under a certificate of urgency.”

The Graphic Online’s reporter in Parliament, Nana Konadu Agyeman reported that the Minority’s argument was that the Bill was not an urgent one on the grounds that it failed to focus on measures that would be instituted to deal with the outbreak of Coronavirus in Ghana.

Contrary, it argued that the Bill was intended to give the President “overbroad powers” to restrict freedom of movement, freedom of speech and freedom of thought.

“So we cannot allow the Bill to override Chapter 5 of the Constitution because it is a general restriction of freedom in Ghana,” they said.

Addressing the press outside Parliament Thursday afternoon, the Chairman of the Subsidiary Legislation Committee of Parliament, Dr Dominic Ayine said, “Not because we do not want the President to adopt measures to address the Coronavirus pandemic but let it be known to all Ghanaians that the Minority support the taking of measures that are narrowly-tailored in dealing with Coronavirus pandemic,” the Graphic Online’s Agyeman reported.

The Bill is intended to provide a legislative framework in consonance with the Constitution for the imposition of restrictions as a quick and effective means of intervention to address emergencies.

It is also to provide power to the President to impose restrictions on persons in the event of disaster, emergency or similar circumstance to ensure public safety and protection, as well as in the interest of defence, public health among others.

The Second Deputy Speaker, Mr Alban Bagbin, referred it to the Constitutional, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Committee for consideration and report to the House.

  • Coronavirus: Akufo-Addo must call NIA, EC to order – CHRAJ

The Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) wants President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to call the National Identification Authority (NIA) to order following its continuance of the mass Ghana Card registration exercise in the Eastern Region in the face of the outbreak of the Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in Ghana.

CHRAJ similarly wants the President or the Inter-Ministerial Committee on COVID-19 to advise the EC on the potential public health risk and safety associated with the planned Voters’ Registration.

A press statement signed by the Commissioner of CHRAJ, Mr Joseph Whittal, said the body was worried that in spite of the President’s directives on social gatherings and the existing WHO precautionary measures aimed at containment and combating COVID-19, the NIA is relentlessly embarking on a registration exercise in the Eastern Region.

“…the Commission is of the considered view that the President or the Inter-Ministerial Committee calls the NIA to order by suspending forthwith its ongoing registration exercise in the Eastern Region until the COVID-9 pandemic normalises,” the statement said.

“In the same vein, the Commission calls on the President or the Inter-Ministerial Committee on COVID-19 to advise the EC on the potential public health risk and safety associated with the planned Voters’ Registration due to the danger or threat that any mass gathering arising from such an exercise can pose to the health and life of the people”.

The statement further stressed that the EC’s “posture and intransigence” would undermine WHO protocols/benchmarks on COVID-19 and violate the Constitution of Ghana.

    NIA

Acknowledging the recent mitigating measures taken by the Government aimed at containment and combating COVID-19, the Commission said it was worried that the National Identification Authority (NIA) is carrying out a registration exercise in the Eastern Region.

“The Commission is however worried that in spite of the President’s directives and the existing WHO precautionary measures aimed at containment and combating COVID-19, the National Identification Authority (NIA) is relentlessly embarking on a registration exercise in the Eastern Region,” the statement said.

“This has been exacerbated by reports in the media that the registration officials are poorly equipped with hand sanitisers, gloves and nose masks”.

The statement added that the NIA’s action is a clear violation of the right to health and ultimately the right to life as stipulated under Articles 34(2), 13(1) and 33(5) of the 1992 Constitution (Constitution) respectively, which are premised on Article 6 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), Articles 12 of the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (ICESCR), Article 16 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACHPR).

    EC

The EC statement further explained that the EC’s posture and intransigence would undermine the World Health Organization’s (WHO) protocols/benchmarks on COVID-19, urging the President or the Inter-Ministerial Committee on COVID-19 to advise the EC on the potential public health risk associated with the planned Voters’ Registration.

“Concerning the Electoral Commission (EC), the Commission’s attention has been drawn to a Press Statement dated 17th march, 2020 issued by Sylvia Annoh (Mrs), EC’s posture and intransigence would undermine WHO protocols/benchmarks on COVID-19 and capable of violating the above mentioned provisions of the Constitution, international and regional human rights instruments and the SDGs for which Ghana is a State Party and a signatory,” the statement said.

“In the same vein, the Commission calls on the President or the Inter-Ministerial Committee on COVID-19 to advise the EC on the potential public health risk and safety associated with the planned Voters’ Registration due to the danger or threat that any mass gathering arising from such an exercise can pose to the health and life of the people.

“The Commission further recommends that Government as a matter of urgency provide protective gear and equipment to all hospitals and health facilities both private and public and to all health professionals directly handling Covid-19 suspected cases to mitigate the looming contagion in the protection of the rights to health and life of these professionals who are exposed to serious risks of contracting the deadly virus in the line of duty on a daily basis”.

Mrs Owusu-Ekuful said, “my own husband returned from the UK two days ago…”

“Because of what is happening, it is important we make it known to colleagues who have travelled outside that on their return they are not welcomed here,” he stated.

  • Coronavirus: Ban on public gathering a plot to rig 2020 elections – Asiedu Nketia claims

While some Ghanaians have lauded the president’s directive on public gatherings due to the recent increase in the number of coronavirus cases in the country, the opposition party, National Democratic Congress thinks otherwise.

According to Mr. Johnson Asiedu Nketia, General Secretary of the NDC, the real intention of the ban on public gatherings by the president is to rig the 2020 elections.

“This whole announcement of emergency ban, emergency here, stopping this gathering, stopping that gathering, in my view, on the surface, it will appear to the world that the president is acting to deal with the COVID-19 and so on.

But the real intention is not to deal with COVID-19 at all. The real intention is to find space to put the pieces of the rigging equipments together. So that by the time anybody could say jack, the election has been compromised,” he said in an interview monitored by GhanaWeb.

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on Sunday announced some bold directives as part of measures to stop the spread of coronavirus in the country.

The President placed a ban on church-related activities, mosques prayers, and all other public gatherings exceeding 25 persons. That was during his second address to the nation on the Coronavirus update.

He also directed airlines to stop bringing in travellers from countries that have recorded over 200 cases of coronavirus effective Tuesday, March 17, 2020.

Social media users are divided over the comments made by the NDC Secretary. According to some, politicizing such a deadly issue is below the belt and uncalled for.

“This man paaaa…..you still don’t have a clue on what has engulfed the world.? You’re thinking about the way to your stomach. When issues if life and death are being dealt with, you’re thinking about the election as if you have not enjoyed enough. Let’s be serious, Johnson Nketia,” one Dela Clinton wrote on Facebook.

Another user with the name Alppha Khristlyk also wrote “I do support the part that the registration must halt, but with the issue of election rigging being the rationale behind this emergency pronouncement? Oh, come on Mr Secretary, that cheap politics and propaganda.”

“How on earth can you politicize the issue on ground. Are you thinking at all? Or you think it’s all about you and NDC. Do you listen to yourself? Are you aware most hit countries have initiated self-quarantine measures by asking citizens to stay at home, companies have also instructed staff to work from home.? Please for once think about the well being of people that vote you guys into power,” Adebayor Kunah questioned.

Deputy Comptroller of Immigration (DCGI) in-charge of Command Post and Operations, Laud Kwesi Affrifah at a press briefing yesterday revealed that his outfit together with the Kotoka International Airport authorities refused about 200 foreign nationals entry into the country as part of measures to curb a spread of COVID-19 in Ghana.

“Over 200 people have been turned back. Only those with resident permits are being allowed in,” he said.

  • Coronavirus: UG Medical School backtracks on evacuation directive to Intl students

The University of Ghana Medical School has backtracked on an earlier ultimatum to International students to leave the country within 14 days amid the coronavirus pandemic.

On Monday, March 16, a communique was issued for all students to vacate the Korle Bu campus of the Medical School.

According to the communique, “students living in Accra and any other region of the country have been given up to Thursday to evacuate their hostels.

“International students have also been asked to book tickets to their home countries. They have been given a two (2) week period to finalize all travel arrangements.”

Some International students who spoke to Starrfm.com.gh on condition of anonymity said they would have preferred to stay in the country rather than go back to their countries where they stand a higher chance of contracting the coronavirus disease.

However, authorities of the University of Ghana have now given an opportunity for international students who wish to stay to remain at their hostels.

In an interview with Starrfm.com.gh, the President of the International Medical Students Association Ife Gemp declined to comment on the issue.

Ghana has so far recorded nine cases of the deadly COVID-19 disease.

The coronavirus pandemic has now infected more than 200,000 people around the globe after doubling in less than two weeks.

Between the start of the outbreak in December and March 7, there were 100,000 confirmed cases recorded.

But another 100,000 people have been infected in just 11 days since then, largely due to a surge in cases in Europe.

China, Italy, Iran, Spain and Germany have suffered the highest number of infections.

The John Hopkins University, which announced cases had surpassed the 200,000 mark, also recorded 8,006 deaths.

The current death toll suggests 4 per cent of patients who catch the virus die from it.

But experts say the death rate is probably lower than that because the true number of infections is much higher is far greater because some countries, including the UK, are only testing people hospitalised by the illness.

  • Coronavirus: Give us protective gear or we wont touch any corpse Mortuary workers

The Mortuary Workers Association of Ghana (MOWAG) has called on the government to make available to its members, the highest quality protective clothing for their work in the wake of the outbreak of COVID-19 in the country.

MOWAG said they stand on the last line in the fight against the deadly virus and have, therefore, already made available pictorial samples of this “quality protective clothing to the Ministry of Health.”

MOWAG in a statement noted that if “these protective clothes are not provided, members would be advised to regard all dead bodies brought to the mortuaries as having fallen by the Coronavirus. Also, no member would go for a body or bodies in the wards.”

The mortuary workers said they are disappointed that at the moments nothing has been said about whether or not dead bodies can further host the virus, therefore, for the sake of the safety of its members, they will take it that dead bodies are not free from the virus.

  • COA FS not a cure for coronavirus Manufacturers

The Center of Awareness Global Peace Mission (COA GPM) has denied media reports that its COA FS medicine is a cure for the deadly coronavirus.

As the world continues its search for a cure for the virus that has claimed over 200,000 lives globally, COA FS has been mentioned as one of the drugs that could help battle the virus.

But in a release issued on Thursday, COA GPM disassociated itself from the reports, clarifying that the call by its Executive President was to court the attention of the World Health Organization to conduct further tests on the drug as a possible cure for the virus.

It stated that COA FS remains a nutritional supplement which boosts the immune system and helps it fight infections.

“We wish to state that COA FS is not a cure for Coronavirus. Also, during the recent press conference, neither Professor Samuel Ato Duncan nor any other speaker alluded to the fact that COA FS is a cure for Coronavirus”.

“COA FS is registered as a food supplement that boosts the immune system and this is what we preach”, excerpts of the statement read.

RE: COA FS IS A CURE FOR CORONAVIRUS

Our attention has been drawn to some publications in the media under the above headline.

The Center of Awareness Global Peace Mission (COA GPM) therefore disassociates itself from such publications. To set the record straight, The Executive President of the Center, Professor Samuel Ato Duncan during the Press Conference appealed to the government and research institutions globally to subject COA FS to further research in order to ascertain its effectiveness against COVID-19. This appeal arose because some infected COVID-19 patients in China claimed they recovered after using the COA FS Immune Booster.

  • Coronavirus: Suspend parliamentary sittings Ken Agyapong

Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong has appealed to the leadership of parliament to suspend parliamentary sittings as the country has recorded nine cases of the coronavirus.

He said the sitting arrangement in parliament is too close and that puts the lawmakers at a high risk of contracting the virus, that is, if a member unknowingly gets infected.

Mr Agyapong explained that the MPs will use their long break to do parliamentary duties after the infection has been totally eradicated in the country.

Speaking on Accra-based Net 2 television on Wednesday, March 18, 2020, Mr Agyapong said: “I’ll like to appeal to the leadership of Parliament to put parliamentary duties on hold for now. Let us go on break as the country deals with the outbreak and then later use our long vacation to work. By that time the problem may have been dealt with,” he suggested.

He added: “Although there are sanitizers all over the place where we can all wash our hands frequently, we need to discourage that sitting arrangement because we are too close in the house.”

  • NIA implements social distancing at registration centres

The National Identification Authority (NIA) has implemented social distancing, one of the precautionary measures announced by the government to combat the spread of the Coronavirus in communities.

As part of measures to curb the spread of the virus, following confirmation of cases in Ghana, the government earlier in the week announced a ban on all large public gatherings.

Other precautionary measures announced by the government included social distancing in communities and other public places.

Some critics have questioned the continuous activities of the NIA, raising concerns that there are too many contacts at their registration centres for the Ghana card.

The NIA has now adopted the social distance measure, which leaves significant meters between people at registration centres to ensure there is no physical contact.

The social distancing measure taken by the NIA is both for people waiting to be served and those who are being served by staff of the NIA.

The adoption of the social distancing measure will also ensure that the required space advised by the World Health Organisation (WHO) is created between people to minimize the effect of a sudden cough or sneeze.

Social distancing has been strongly recommended at communities, offices, homes and public places such as the DVLA, registrar general, passport offices, etc., where daily services are rendered.

  • Dietary approach to protect yourself from COVID-19 and other infections

Most at times we hear ‘you are what you eat’ and eating healthy has the tendency to boost your immune system to maintain defenses against infection through the cooperation of many body’s tissues.

The digestive tract is lined with membranes that resist penetration by invading microbes and other unwanted substances just as the skin presents a physical barrier.

These linings are highly sensitive to vitamins and other nutritional deficiencies hence, the need to ensure your diet comes with adequate, balance, moderate and calorie-controlled nutrients amidst variety of food choices.

For your immune system to rush and defend the body against harm in cases of penetration of foreign invader, your white blood cell that depends on a steady flow of nutrients to build defense mechanism must have been served with nutritious meals to be able to act as scavengers and release antibodies to fight infections.

For your healthy eating, you need to be abreast of your daily caloric need. A recommended calorie intake is required daily for healthy living and your height, weight, age, gender and physical activity level is a determinant of your daily needs.

For a healthy individual: determining your daily caloric need:

There is Basal metabolic rate when at rest and you can determine that by using this calculation:

    Basal Metabolic rate:

    Adult male: 66 + (6.3 X weight in pounds) + (12.9 X height in inches) – (6.8 X age in years)

    Adult Female: 665 + (4.3 X weight in pounds) + (4.7 X height in Inches) – (4.7 X age in years)

To determine your total daily calorie needs, multiply your BMR by the appropriate activity factor, as follows:

    • If you are sedentary (little or no exercise) : Calorie-Calculation = BMR x 1.2

    • If you are lightly active (light exercise/sports 1-3 days/week) : Calorie-Calculation = BMR x 1.375

    • If you are moderately active (moderate exercise/sports 3-5 days/week) : Calorie-Calculation = BMR x 1.55

    • If you are very active (hard exercise/sports 6-7 days a week) : Calorie-Calculation = BMR x 1.725

    • If you are extra active (very hard exercise/sports & physical job or 2x training) : Calorie-Calculation = BMR x 1.9

It is with the knowledge of this that the saying ‘eat well’ comes into reality. If you have any problem doing such, contact a registered dietitian for a guide.

Prevention is the golden standard! Therefore, eat based on your daily caloric needs.

The great news is that, every food item you choose has the tendency to offer you good health especially when eaten in moderation.

    General Guidelines

Aside your regular choice of local staples, you can add garlic, ginger, hot chillies to increase body’s heat energy in the outbreak of COVID-19 Regular intake of warm water can help protect you against the pandemic.

Take ginger soup or drink and exercise at least 30 minutes in a day.

Take less of refined sugars, sweets and oily foods: pastries, soft drinks.

It is necessary to drink water regularly but not too much ice water.

To those with an already impaired immune system ensure that, foods are thoroughly cooked.

Use salt water to soak your fruits and later wash under hygienic running water.

Choose cooked vegetables over raw vegetables and great garnishes.

Ensure your meat, egg, and fish are thoroughly cooked

Personal and food hygiene are key to healthy eating.

  • UEW directs staff to work from campus despite closure of the University to students

The University of Education, Winneba has directed its entire staff to continue to work from their campuses despite the closure of the university amid the global novel coronavirus pandemic that has caused health crisis in some countries.

Although the university has since Monday, March 16 sent home all its students, it asked its staff to show up for work “to render critical services to keep the University running”.

It encouraged staff to strictly adhere to precautionary measures set out by the World Health Organisation, the Ministry of Health and the University itself.

“The University will consequently be rolling out its academic programmes online through its Learning Management Systems (LMS),” it stated.

Meanwhile, all students of the university have been asked to stay at home until they are officially requested to report back to campus.

Ghana recorded its first two cases of the global pandemic on March 12 and the number has since shot up to seven.

    All the cases were imported.

The covid-19 pandemic which originated in China late last year has infected more than 200,000 people and killed over 7,100 globally.

Government has announced what some believe to be bold measures, including travel restrictions and closure of all schools in the country as well as a ban of social gatherings to stem the spread of the virus.

Businesses and other workplaces however continue to operate, but have been directed to observe prescribed social distancing between patrons and staff.

Establishments, such as supermarkets, shopping malls, restaurants, night clubs, hotels and drinking spots, have also been advised by government to observe enhanced hygiene procedures by providing, amongst others, hand sanitizers, running water and soap for washing of hands.

  • Its wrong to suspend parliamentary sittings over coronavirus – Majority Leader

Majority Leader of Parliament, Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu says persons who have asked parliament to suspend all sittings given the outbreak of the coronavirus in Ghana are wrong.

The legislator said we have not gotten to the point where parliament would have to suspend its sitting.

The work of parliament is special hence we cannot suspend it.

He referred to the Imposition Bill laid before the House on Wednesday saying should the House suspend its sitting, they would not be able to approve the bill.

The Attorney-General Gloria Akuffo on Wednesday laid before parliament an Imposition of Restrictions Bill 2020.

The bill will provide legal backing for his outlined measures to prevent the spread of the Coronavirus.

The bill has been referred to the Constitution and Legal Affairs Committee of parliament for consideration.

Parliament he said would need at least half of the legislators, to approve the bill and so, it would not be prudent to have sittings suspended.

The Majority Leader disclosed they would be holding sitting at the Conference Centre following an order to have the chamber fumigated.

This forms part of measures to prevent a spread of Coronavirus in the House.

The public gallery he explained is no longer accessible.

  • Coronavirus: Frequent hand washing may cause water shortage in Ghana -GWCL hints

Director of communications at the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL), Stanley Martey, says the frequent hand washing practice by Ghanaians amidst the coronavirus outbreak may increase demand for water thereby affecting few areas in water supply.

In an interview on the Happy Morning Show with Samuel Eshun aired on Happy 98.9FM, he explained: “We are also aware of the COVID-19 pandemic of which we have all been admonished to be washing our hands under running water. Now, we are washing our hands regularly under running water which means that it is going to affect demand for water because more people will be using more water now. If you also realize, we are now communicating with other parts of our body like our shoulders, our legs and all manner of communication so we are also not only being asked to wash our hands regularly but to also bath or wash down thoroughly more than we did previously. In all these, it is very clear that demand for water will be going higher”.

He thus admonished Ghanaians to use water judiciously by avoiding unnecessary watering of lawns and washing of vehicles with treated water. • NIA registration an essential service and it must go on Minister

The Eastern regional minister Eric Kwakye Daffour has justified the continuous registration exercise by the National Identification Authority (NIA) despite the Presidential directive against public gathering in the wake of coronavirus saying it is an essential service.

According to him, the exercise is a public gathering that can be controlled.

“In my view it is an essential service and must go on,” he told Morning Starr host Francis Abban.

He added: “ It is a public gathering that can be controlled”.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Medical Association (GMA) has called on the National Identification Authority (NIA) to immediately suspend the ongoing mass registration exercise in the Eastern region.

A statement by the GMA stated that in the “interest of Public Health and Safety, the GMA calls on the National Identification Authority (NIA) to suspend with immediate effect the ongoing mass registration exercise in the Eastern region.”

According to the GMA, the decision to proceed with the mass registration exercise defeats the spirit and letter of the directives issued by the President as part of measures to combat the COVID-19 spread in the country.

Though the National Identification Authority, on Monday, March 16, 2020, directed all Supervising Registration Officers (SROs) to allow only twenty-five (25) persons including its officials at a registration center in a given time, Starr News observation in most of the centers in the region indicate that the directive is not being adhered too.

Again, there are no handwashing facilities and sanitizers available for both applicants and registration officials to use exposing them to high risk of being infected.

The opposition National Democratic Congress on Tuesday also called on the NIA to stop the mass registration exercise in the Eastern region in order to protect applicants from the spread of coronavirus.

In a rather bizarre circumstance, hand sanitizers placed at vantage points at the precincts of Parliament to help prevent the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19) are being drained at a very alarming rate by some unsuspecting workers, thereby, denying others from accessing the product.

This unethical act, according to the Leadership of Parliament, is done at a time when the House has suspended sitting and there is virtually nobody in sight.

At a sitting on Wednesday, March 18, 2020, the Majority Leader and Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, who is worried about the development raised the issue and cautioned that anyone caught in the act will be severely sanctioned.

“Mr. Speaker, we are procuring the hand sanitizers and placing them at vantage positions. What we have realized is that a few individuals are draining the hand sanitizers and taking them elsewhere which is very serious. Mr. Speaker, we need to activate the CCTV and anybody who is caught in this, not only are we going to name and shame, but appropriate sanctions will be applied to that person. It cannot be that hand sanitizers are placed at vantage positions and overnight we come and then everything is gone”, he cautioned.

The hand sanitizers placed at vantage points at the precincts of Parliament are part of measures put in place by the Leadership of the House to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.

The House has also in the interim, banned the public from observing Parliamentary sittings from the public gallery. They have also procured some digital infrared thermometer to check the temperature of workers and Members of Parliament before allowing entry.
