A former cricket player who was arrested for possibly assaulting someone was very sad before he was found dead in South Africa, a hearing found.
Cricket reporter and former Somerset captain Peter Roebuck, who was 55 years old, passed away in November 2011 in Cape Town while working as a sports commentator.
Mr Roebuck is accused of attacking a 26-year-old man in a hotel room, as reported in Cheshire Coroner’s Court.
The investigation found that Mr. Roebuck died by suicide 13 years ago.
The cricketer played for Somerset for a long time and also led the team. After retiring, he worked as a commentator for BBC Radio’s Test Match Special.
The writer for the Sydney Morning Herald was staying at the Southern Sun hotel to talk about a game between Australia and South Africa.
The investigation on Friday found out that Mr. Roebuck is accused of sexually assaulting a 26-year-old man in his room on 7 November. They had planned to discuss whether he could help the student with money for university.
Someone told the police about a problem on November 12, and the police went to Mr. Roebuck’s hotel to arrest him that same evening.
Jim Maxwell, a friend of Mr. Roebuck, got a call late at night asking him to go to his room. He works for the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.
Mr Maxwell, who was staying on the same floor of the hotel, said he went into the room after a police officer greeted him and saw his friend sitting on the bed.
“He was really sad,” he said.
He said that Mr Roebuck told him to call people at his house and to find a lawyer, then the police asked him to leave.
‘In charge of himself’
Arresting officer Det Aubrey McDonald said that Peter Roebuck claimed to be famous in the cricket world and that his arrest will be big news around the world.
Mr McDonald went out the hotel room to make a phone call and heard his work friend Lt Cecil Jacobs yelling at Mr Roebuck.
An incident happened and Mr. Roebuck died, according to the investigation.
Mr McDonald said: “When the incident happened, the person who died seemed very relaxed and in charge of himself. ”
The court was told that examinations done in South Africa and the UK both found that Mr Roebuck died from multiple injuries.
The inquest in South Africa found that the person died the same way. The family did not go to the inquest.
Dr Matthew Lyall, the doctor who examined the body after death, said in his report that there is no evidence to definitely show that someone else caused the injuries. But it’s also possible that someone else was involved, based on the examination.
At the end of the investigation, Jacqueline Devonish, the senior coroner for Cheshire, thanked the family members who came to court.
She apologized for the long time it took to make progress on the case, and mentioned that they were waiting for a renewed hearing in South Africa, but it hasn’t happened yet.

Cricketer imprisoned for threatening to kill Dutch MP Geert Wilders
A cricketer from Pakistan who used to play for the national team has been sentenced to 12 years in prison in the Netherlands. He threatened a politician named Geert Wilders, who is known for his far-right views.
This situation involved a video that was shared on the internet in 2018. In the video, Khalid Latif offered a large sum of money, 21,000 euros or £18,000, to anyone who would harm or cause the death of a politician.
That happened when Mr. Wilders said things about the Prophet Muhammad that upset Muslims.
It is not expected that Latif will spend any time in prison.
He currently stays in Pakistan, and Pakistan has no agreement with the Netherlands to send him back.
The Dutch government has been trying to talk to Latif for many years, but Pakistan has not given them any assistance.
On Monday, the court decided that it wasn’t far-fetched to believe that someone from anywhere in the world would have listened to the call to harm Mr.
The top judge, G Verbeek, stated that his remarks were not only criticizing Mr. Wilders personally, but also criticizing the freedom to speak freely.
Latif did not make a comment right away after the decision.
He put the video on the internet in 2018 when Mr. Wilder said he would have a contest for drawings of Muhammad.
In Islam, it is not allowed to have pictures of the Prophet because it is seen as worshiping idols. Caricatures of the Prophet are especially disrespectful.
Mr Wilders, who is famous for speaking against Islam, changed his stance when there were big protests in Pakistan and he got many death threats. The 60-year-old person is used to being involved in actions or statements that cause disagreement or argument. In 2020, he was found not guilty of causing hate and unfair treatment but was found guilty of insulting a specific racial group.
Mr Wilders was found guilty of similar accusations in 2016.
In a message on X (formerly Twitter) after the court’s decision on Monday, he asked Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte and the country’s justice minister to push the Pakistani authorities strongly to arrest and send Latif back to the Netherlands.
The old cricket player has not played the game since 2017 because he was punished with a five-year ban for being involved in an illegal betting scheme.

Khawaja, an Australian cricketer born in Pakistan, faces visa delays from India
He was the only player, according to Cricket Australia, who was unable to travel to India for the Test series.
Usman Khawaja, the Australian opener, missed the team’s flight to India for their four-Test tour due to a visa holdup, according to Cricket Australia (CA).
According to a CA spokesperson, the batsman, who was born in Pakistan, was the only member of Australia’s team who did not board the flight on Wednesday because his visa was late.
Khawaja posted online a meme from the popular Netflix series Narcos where infamous drug lord Pablo Escobar sits on a garden chair staring into space, with the caption “Me waiting for my Indian Visa like… #stranded #dontleaveme #standard #anytimenow”.
CA was expecting the visa to arrive later on Wednesday and said Khawaja had been booked on a flight out on Thursday.

— Usman Khawaja (@Uz_Khawaja) February 1, 2023Some team support staff are also flying out on Thursday.
In 2011, Khawaja had said he was denied entry into India “because he was not born in Australia”. However, since then Khawaja has visited India several times.
Pakistan and India have had fraught relations since partition in 1947 and those tensions have routinely seeped into sports.
Australia will try to win their first Test series in India in almost a decade. Tests will be played in Nagpur, New Delhi, Dharamsala and the last one at the world’s largest cricket stadium in Ahmedabad.
After being left out of the Test side for about two years, Khawaja made a stunning return against England in the 2021-22 Ashes.
He notched up his 4,000th Test run in a recent match against South Africa in Sydney, where he was 195 not out.
Khawaja was awarded the inaugural Shane Warne Men’s Test Player of the Year award for his 1,020 runs at an average of 78.46.
