  • Senegal opposition leader Sonko to face trial over rape charges

Senegal opposition leader Sonko to face trial over rape charges

Some opposition leaders and Sonko’s supporters believe the president of Senegal is trying to get rid of a potential rival by bringing this case.

According to a judge conducting the investigation, Senegalese opposition leader Ousmane Sonko will go on trial in 2021 on charges of rape and threatening to kill a worker at a beauty parlour.

According to a letter from the judge dated January 17 and obtained by the Reuters news agency on Wednesday, the case has been referred to Senegal’s criminal chamber for trial.

Sonko’s lawyer did not immediately respond to a request for comment, but the 48-year-old politician has previously denied all the charges.

A trial could jeopardise his intention to compete in the 2024 presidential election. Sonko, who came third in the 2019 election, has announced he will run.

It could also stoke political tensions in Senegal. Clashes broke out in the country in March 2021 when Sonko was initially summoned by the investigating judge and arrested.

Sonko is accused of sexually assaulting a woman who worked in a massage parlour and later threatening her. He and his backers say the trial is politically motivated to eliminate him from the presidential race.

He enjoys widespread support among Senegalese youth, many of who are frustrated with the government as unemployment and economic hardship have remained high, leading to sporadic and sometimes violent protests.

Cries of “Macky Sall is a dictator” rang out in Dakar during one protest in July 2022.

El Hadj Diouf, lawyer for the plaintiff, said his client was delighted by the judge’s decision.

“It does not come as a surprise. We have nothing to hide,” he told Reuters by telephone.

The win saw Aliou Cissé’s side set up a last-16 meeting with Group B winners England on Sunday (19:00 GMT).

Crowds poured to the streets of Dakar after the final whistle – many waving the country’s flag while others chanted praise for the players.

One group of supporters went to the presidential palace where they were met by President Macky Sall.

  • Dakar welcomes one of the largest cinemas in West Africa

One of the largest cinemas in West Africa has opened. Pathé, the second oldest cinema company still operating in the world, set up shop in the Senegalese capital.

For movie lovers living in Dakar, a dozen movie theatres are now available.

A major achievement for the city in which cinemas had virtually all closed in the 2000s, due to the disengagement of the state and competition from DVD.

The Director of Operations of the French company Pathé Dakar cinema, hopes it will revitalize the sector.

“Why choose Senegal? Well Senegal first and foremost has a history”, Moustahpa Samb exclaims.

“We know the great names of Senegalese cinema such as Sèmbène Ousmane and Djibril Diop Mambety. It is a country where new talents begin to gain recognition all over the world. We have recently seen the success of Senegalese cinema through the diaspora but also with young creators who are based here in Dakar. It is a favourable ecosystem.”

The cinema complex welcomed its fist spectators Friday.

If the inauguration was initially set in 2020, the pandemic and supply problems delayed the ceremony. The venue has a capacity of 1,394 seats, and more than 7 cinemas.

Films from all over the world will be screened here.

Senegalese cinema is considered one of the oldest and most dynamic in Africa, but it declined after the golden age of the 1960s to 1980s. Production has picked up in recent years. Television series are booming.
