Ghanaian woman dies in London after ambulance delayed for two hours

A mother has died after waiting for nearly two hours for an ambulance, after complaining about severe pain and shortness of breath, before her heartbroken nine-year-old daughter spent hours trying to wake her up.

Victoria Louisa Maame Yamphet, 40, died in her home in Dagenham, east London, last week, in front of her terrified daughters aged 9 and 18.

Her daughter Emmanuela, 18, said her mother came home with a flu on Sunday, January 8, and rapidly declined.

She said: ‘My mum complained about her ribs and belly hurting. I offered to call an ambulance because she isn’t really a sick person and I knew it was bad.’

During the night, Maame, as she was referred to by friends and family, got more severe and at 6.09am on Tuesday, January 10, her daughter called for an ambulance.

She was initially told the ambulance was six to ten minutes away, but 20 minutes later there was still no ambulance, despite the ambulance strike only happening the next day.

‘I called again and all of a sudden it was an hour wait’, she said.

‘I told them my mum can’t wait that long. I was in distress because I didn’t know what to do.’

She was told at 7.15am that a taxi would be send to her house to take her mother to the hospital.

However, the taxi didn’t reach them in time: ‘Before the taxi got to us, her pain got worse. She just stopped breathing in front of me and my little sister.

‘I put her in a recovery position, I did CPR on her. I called the ambulance screaming and crying for them to get here quicker.

‘They literally got here within a minute, and it made me feel like when I really need them to come, they can, but they didn’t until I started screaming and crying.

‘When they came, they did everything they could but it was a bit too late. Because my mother was left for an hour and 45 minutes to be in pain, sadly … she didn’t make it.

‘She suffered from cardiac arrest due to her not being able to breathe properly.’

Maame, the name she went by, worked as a support worker for over 20 years. Her daughter said: ‘It’s very unfair. My mum was a support worker, she always looked after people, but when it was her turn, she wasn’t taken care of.’

The young woman said on top of her disappointment in the ambulance service, she was very distressed when her mother’s body was left at the house with her and her nine-year-old sister Emily for six hours.

She said: ‘My little sister was on the floor next to our mum the whole time. She was crying, shaking her and trying to wake her up.’

Their father, who works in the NHS, rushed home to his partner and children and when he was told his partner ‘didn’t make it, he literally started breaking down’, his daughter said.

Maame’s daughters, who are both receiving councelling via their schools, are currently staying with their aunt Sally Andrews in south London as she doesn’t want her nieces to stay where their mother died.
Maame’s death comes as ambulance services have just announced further walkouts in February that are due to bring futher chaos amid the recent outrage over long NHS waiting times.

Dr Fenella Wrigley, Chief Medical Officer for London Ambulance Service, said:

‘We are deeply sorry for the delay in responding to Mrs Yamphet.

‘We are investigating our response to this 999 call and the care provided, and as part of this thorough review, will contact Mrs Yamphet’s family to understand the circumstances of this incident.

‘On behalf of London Ambulance Service, I offer my sincere condolences to the family and loved ones of Mrs Yamphet.’

The cause of Mrs Yamphet’s death is yet to be determined. In the meantime, her daugher Emmanuela has set up a fundraising page for her mother’s funeral: ‘We want to give her a befitting burial’, she said.

Somali taxman sentenced to death for killing trader

A Somali military court has sentenced a revenue officer to death for the murder of a man following a dispute over a 5,000 Somali-shilling ($9; £7) tax, state TV says.

Qasim Duale Abdi shot dead businessman Abubakar Mohamed Nourani, 65, last week in the Hamarweyne district of the capital Mogadishu in front of dozens of onlookers for failing to pay the $9, state prosecutors told the court on Sunday.

The killing sent shockwaves throughout the country and among Somalis online, with even President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud intervening to call for justice for the victim.

The case was heard and concluded in one session on 15 January.

Mr Nourani’s family and friends thanked the court for the death sentence, saying they were satisfied with how security and judicial services handled the case.

The prosecution told the court that the victim’s business was so small it did not meet the threshold to pay tax, saying the convict was part of an extortion racket in Mogadishu.

The court ruled that the tax officer “deliberately killed the victim”.

The death penalty is legal in Somalia and executions for crimes such as murder are common in the country.

Alireza Akbari: Iran executes British-Iranian dual national

British-Iranian dual national Alireza Akbari, who was sentenced to death in Iran, has been executed.

Mr Akbari’s family had been asked to go to his prison for a “final visit” on Wednesday and his wife said he had been moved to solitary confinement.

The ex-deputy Iranian defence minister was arrested in 2019 and convicted of spying for the UK, which he denied.

UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said the execution was a “callous and cowardly act, carried out by a barbaric regime”.

Iran’s rulers had “no respect for the human rights of their own people” Mr Sunak said, adding that his thoughts were “with Alireza’s friends and family”.

UK Foreign Secretary James Cleverly said the execution would “not stand unchallenged”.

The Iranian judiciary’s official news outlet Mizan reported on Saturday that Alireza Akbari had been hanged, without specifying the date when the execution took place.

The news came after Iran posted a video of Mr Akbari earlier this week showing what appeared to be forced confessions, and after the country’s intelligence ministry had described the British-Iranian as “one of the most important agents of the British intelligence service in Iran”.

However BBC Persian broadcast an audio message on Wednesday from Mr Akbari in which he said he had been tortured and forced to confess on camera to crimes he did not commit.

The United States had also joined calls for Iran not to execute Mr Akbari. US diplomat Vedant Patel said “his execution would be unconscionable” and condemned the charges against him as “politically motivated”.

The UK Foreign Office has ben supporting Mr Akbari’s family and had repeatedly raised his case with Iranian authorities. It had requested urgent consular access, but Iran’s government does not recognise dual nationality for Iranians.

German paraglider dies in hospital after crashing into lion’s head

A German paraglider who was airlifted to hospital after crashing into Lion’s Head on Tuesday has reportedly died from his injuries.

The man believed to have been a solo recreational pilot and a member of the South African Hang Gliding and Paragliding Association (Sahpa) reportedly died on Wednesday morning.

Several emergency services responded to the call of the accident and provided advanced life support to the victim.

“He was treated and provided with advanced life support interventions before he was airlifted to Groote Schuur Hospital for urgent care,” said ER24.

Wilderness Search And Rescue (WSAR) who assisted with the helicopter rescue said the tricky part was getting the patient down from the mountains, as it proved very technical.

“A small WSAR team on board the rescue helicopter was flown to the accident site and hoisted down to the patient.

“He was placed onto a stretcher, and short-hauled from the scene, together with the rescuers. The short-haul technique involves hanging the rescue team from a purpose-made strop, or rope, from under the helicopter, for a short distance,” WSAR said in a statement.

According to police spokesperson, FC Van Wyk the 47-year-old foreign national died at a nearby hospital at 05:00 on Wednesday after being involved in a paragliding incident.

Van Wyk said Woodstock police were investigating an inquest case.

Meanwhile, SAHPA chairperson, Louis Stanford said the deceased was a solo recreational pilot and a member of SAHPA, which was bound by the Civil Aviation Act and associated regulation, the report said.

“The reason for this accident is unknown, but will be investigated by the Civil Aviation Authority,” the report quoted Stanford as saying.

  • 10-year-old boy electrocuted at Prestea Huni Valley

10-year-old boy electrocuted at Prestea Huni Valley

A 10-year-old boy has been electrocuted to death at Beppoh, a community in the Prestea Huni Valley municipality.

Emmanuel Owusu Ampoma, a fourth-grade pupil at Beppoh Methodist Primary School, was playing with his friends when the unfortunate happened on the afternoon of Saturday, January 7, 2023.

Speaking to GhanaWeb, the Assembly member for the area, Thomas Yaw Enyam, explained that, “someone tapped electricity with a 2.5mm cable from a store for his business, but the cable got torn with one side of the cable hanging in the middle of the road. So, while the children were playing, the boy held the cable, which electrocuted him by lifting him up and landing him on the ground. He was quickly rushed to the Beppoh Clinic but unfortunately died on the way to the health centre.”

He explained that he informed the Bogoso Police Command, who came there for investigation.

The Assembly member disclosed to GhanaWeb that Emmanuel Owusu Ampoma was a guide to his visually impaired mother, but his demise has brought a lot of challenges to the mother as to who would help her in all the things Ampoma was helping her to do because of her impairment.

In a video, the woman is seen crying bitterly, calling for her son to come and guide her to a place.

Information gathered by GhanaWeb indicates that Ampoma made sure he put food and water in a place that would be easily accessible to the mother anytime she was ready to eat. He always came to the house during break time to ensure that the mother was okay before he finally left from school.

The assemblyman attributed the death of Ampoma to negligence and ignorance.

According to him, people who had been using the road in that area knew that the cable was hanging, but did not report it to any authority, so the right thing was done.

“After the incident happened, I heard some of the folks in the community say they saw the hanging cable but did not know it was live cable,” he added.

He said he has informed the Electricity Company of Ghana to come into the community to educate citizens on how to use electricity so that this unfortunate event does not happen again.

  • Pele: Brazil legend dies aged 82 after battle with cancer

Brazil football legend Pele, one of the greatest players of all time, has died at the age of 82.

The former striker, who is the only player in history to win three World Cups, passed away at the Albert Einstein hospital in Sao Paulo following a battle with cancer.

A message from Pele’s official Twitter account on Thursday read: “Inspiration and love marked the journey of King Pelé, who peacefully passed away today. Love, love and love, forever.”

Pele, who is Brazil’s joint all-time top scorer with 77 goals in 92 matches, became an icon of the game after winning the World Cup in 1958 as a 17-year-old, netting twice in the final to defeat hosts Sweden.

Pele, born Edson Arantes do Nascimento, to a poor family in Sao Paulo, won the 1958, 1962 and 1970 World Cups with Brazil.

Injury restricted his contribution to Brazil’s triumph in 1962 in Chile but he was player of the tournament eight years later, as Brazil assembled one of the greatest sides of all time and lifted the Jules Rimet trophy in Mexico thanks to a 4-1 win over Italy in which Pele scored the opening goal.

That goal makes him one of only five players to have scored in two World Cup finals and, thanks to his exploits in 1958, he remains the youngest player to have netted a goal at the tournament.

In total, Pele scored 12 goals in 14 World Cup appearances and also provided 10 assists – the most by any player in the history of the competition, and a reminder that he was much more than a goalscorer.`

It was his spectacular scoring feats, though, that made him a Santos legend at club level.

Pele holds his hometown side’s all-time goal record and helped them to two Copa Libertadores titles and six Brazilian league crowns during a glittering 18-year spell with the club.

Pele, who scored 1,281 goals in 1,363 games for club and country during his career, ended his playing days at New York Cosmos and retired from football in 1977.

After retiring, Pele acted as an ambassador for football. In 2013, he was awarded the FIFA Ballon d’Or Prix d’Honneur in recognition of his career and achievements. In 2020, he was named in the Ballon d’Or Dream Team, a greatest of all-time XI.

    Neymar: King Pele is forever

Neymar, Brazil’s joint-highest scorer in men’s international football alongside Pele, shared an emotional tribute to his idol following his passing.

“‘Before Pelé, 10, was just a number’,” Neymar, who wears the No 10 for Brazil and also started his career with Santos, wrote in a post on Instagram.

“I’ve read this phrase somewhere, at some point in my life. But this sentence, beautiful, is incomplete.

“I would say before Pelé football was just a sport. Pelé has changed it all. He turned football into art, into entertainment.

“He gave voice to the poor, to black people and especially: he gave visibility to Brazil. Soccer and Brazil have raised their status thanks to the King! He’s gone but his magic remains. Pelé is forever.”

Martin Tyler: ‘In the football world Pele is immortal’

Sky Sports football commentator Martin Tyler says Pele deserves to be remembered as the best player to have played the game.

He said: “For me he is the greatest player of all time. One of my early jobs outside of television was to put the English voice on a VHS, as it was in those days, of his Brazil career and his 1,000 goals.

“If I had any doubts about how good he was, that video proved it. It was a privilege to do that and pay tribute to a man who could do so much more than score goals.

“He will always be remembered for the ability to score amazing goals in terrible conditions on bumpy pitches, when players had more license to use all means to stop him. He was irresistible.

“Undoubtedly for me he will always be the greatest and in the football world he is immortal.”

  • Nigerian arrested for assaulting wife to death

The suspect was arrested on Sunday, November 20, 2022, according to Ogun State Police Command in a statement issued on Monday, and signed by its spokesman, SP Abimbola Oyeyemi.

A 45-year-old man, Segun Omotosho Ebenezer, has been arrested by the Nigeria Police Force for allegedly beating his wife, Bukola, 42 to death in Ogun State.

The suspect was arrested on Sunday, November 20, 2022, according to Ogun State Police Command in a statement issued on Monday, and signed by its spokesman, SP Abimbola Oyeyemi.

His arrest, according to the statement followed a complaint lodged at Kemta Divisional Headquarters on November 14, 2022, by the elder sister of the deceased, who reported that the deceased was beaten and seriously injured by her husband over a minor disagreement.

Oyeyemi stated that the deceased was subsequently rushed to the Federal Medical Centre, Idi-Aba Abeokuta, by the suspect for medical attention, but that she died while receiving treatment.

“Unknown to the husband, the deceased had sent a voice note to her family members informing them that her husband has used a padlock to hit her on the head while beating her, and that if she died, they should be aware that it was her husband that killed her.

“As soon as the voice note was played to his hearing, the husband took to his heels having realised that his evil deed had been exposed,” Oyeyemi said.

The police spokesman noted that following the report and the recording evidence, the Divisional Police Officer of Kemta Division, CSP Adeniyi Adekunle, detailed his detectives to go after the husband and fish him out.

“He was subsequently traced to Akinseku village, Abeokuta where he has been hibernating, and was promptly apprehended.”

The statement further said, “Preliminary investigation has revealed that their incessant quarrel was because the deceased built a private school in the name of herself and the husband, but the husband who is a carpenter had wanted to take control of the school which the deceased wife who was an NCE graduate refused.

“This is the reason why the suspect has been beating the deceased, until that fateful day when he used an iron padlock to hit her on the head, which eventually led to her untimely death.”

Oyeyemi, however, noted that the police commissioner, CP Lanre Bankole, had directed that the suspect should be transferred to the homicide section of the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department for further investigation and diligent prosecution.

  • Aaron Carter’s fiancée blames late singer’s manager for his decline

Aaron Carter’s fiancée is calling out the late singer’s manager for shedding light on Aaron’s declining health leading up to his death.

Earlier this week, Carter’s manager Taylor Helgeson spoke to Page Six about his last encounter with Aaron, which took place two days before the former pop star was found dead at his home at the age of 34.

“He looked thin. He was extremely tired,” Helgeson said. “He just looked like he needed to be doing anything but working. He looked like he needed to be taking care of him.”

On Friday, Carter’s fiancée Melanie Martin took to her Instagram Story to issue a scathing response to Helgeson’s interview.

“This man did nothing to help Aaron,” Martin wrote. “He enabled him so much. All he did was put a wedge between Aaron and I for the party to start,” Melanie wrote. “He tried to take over and brought him things that should have NEVER been brought to anyone. Let alone an addict.”

She also accused him of taking advantage of Aaron. “He overworked him when he was not well. He used him in life and now he’s still using him after death getting paid for interviews! This man wanted to get Aaron‘s career back but this wasn’t the time to do so,” she said. “Aaron needed help and needed rehab to be sober before he could revive his career.”

“This man was no hero. He had a hand in his relapse,” she said.

Carter passed away Nov. 5 inside his Lancaster, California home. Law enforcement responded to a call around 11 a.m. that a male had drowned in the bathtub.

No foul play is suspected, and an official cause of death is unknown.

  • Ukraine war: Zambia demands answers for death of student

Zambia has demanded answers over the death of a student who was fighting for Russia in Ukraine.

Lusaka has asked Moscow “to urgently provide information on the circumstances” surrounding Lemekhani Nyirenda’s death.

The 23-year-old, a student at the Moscow Engineering Physics Institute, had been serving nine years in jail for a drug offence.

His family has unanswered questions and wants to identify the body in Russia.

Mr Nyirenda died in September but Russia has only just informed Zambia’s government.

The Zambian embassy in Russia established that Mr Nyirenda’s body had since been transported to the Russian southern border town of Rostov-on-Don in readiness for repatriation to Zambia, Zambia’s Foreign Affairs Minister Stanley Kakubo said on Monday.

“As minister, I have been personally in touch, and will maintain contact with the family of the deceased in order to provide an update on more details surrounding their loved one’s death,” Mr Kakubo commented.

The student was working as a part-time courier when an unknown person handed him a package containing drugs, his father Edwin Nyirenda told Reuters news agency.

The father also said “we don’t know” who conscripted his son from prison, and added that the family only “received a message from a man we do not know in Russia who told us that there was a will, which our son left, and we should travel to Russia”.

Zambia has traditionally sent students to Russia to study on scholarships, as was the case with Mr Nyirenda.

The circumstances of his release from prison are unknown, but Russia has offered freedom to some prisoners in exchange for fighting in its war in Ukraine.

Zambia has taken a neutral position on the Russia-Ukraine war, as many other African countries have, but says it condemns any form of war.

  • Police hold Remembrance Day for fallen officers in Central Region

The Central Regional Police Command on Wednesday held a Remembrance Day for three gallant officers who lost their lives in the line of duty this year in the region.

Held at the forecourt of the Regional Police head office, the ceremony brought together families of the bereaved officers and other security agencies.

The deceased police officers were Sergeant Hifzullai Alihu, Corporal Kojo Mahama, and Chief Inspector Williams Dogbe.

Sgt. Alihu, who was with the operations units in Cape Coast, was run over by a driver, C/L Mahama, with the Court unit died in a motor accident and Inspector Dogbe died after a short illness.

Wreaths were laid to celebrate the fallen heroes for their dedication and commitment to the peace and stability of the country.

Mr Ernest Arthur, the Cape Coast Metropolitan Chief Executive, who represented Mrs. Justina Marigold Assan, the Regional Minister laid a wreath on behalf of the President and the people of Ghana,

Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Alexander Amenyo, the Regional Police Commander, laid the wreath  on behalf of Dr. George Akufo-Dampare, the Inspector General of Police while Mrs Fatimatu Issah did for the departed officers.

Reverend Chief Inspector Felix Mensah-Kwagyir, the Chaplain at the Command led the memorial service, exhortation, and a call to remembrance.

There was a sounding of the last post and a minute silence was observed and flags hoisted at half mast and  officers in uniform saluted.

Addressing the gathering before the ceremony, DCOP Amenyo charged the officers not to be discouraged by the challenges but be resilient and determined to maintain national peace.

He said the Remembrance Day had been singled out by the Police Administration to give special recognition to serving police officers who lost their lives while on duty, be it in the country or on peacekeeping duties.

It is a day to recognize the contributions and the sacrifices made by the officers at the peril of their lives.

According to him, once police officers paid the ultimate price in the course of performing their duty, the Police Memorial Day celebrates such heroes and engraves their memories as a permanent monument.

The idea for the observation was conceived in November 24, 2014 but the maiden event took place on a bare floor at the time.

The cenotaph was first used to mark the Remembrance Day for officers who perished in November 2015 and 2016.

The day has been permanently fixed for November 2 to coincide with all Souls Day of the Catholic Calendar.

The Police Administration also uses the occasion to visit families of the bereaved families and offer them some support while church services and Muslim prayers are held after the ceremony in honour of the dead.

In an exhortation, Rev. Mensah-Kwagyir reminded everyone about the inevitability of death and said: “The reality is that we will all exit the world in different circumstances and so no one can escape it.”

He said the death of a police officer was not only a loss to the family but to the nation as well and charged the police officers to be steadfast and focused on their duties.

  • Chuck D condemns gun violence as ‘abnormal behavior’ following takeoff’s death

Public Enemy legend Chuck D is addressing gun violence following the tragic death of Takeoff, who was gunned down Tuesday morning in Houston.

In a conversation with TMZ, Chuck D spoke about his generation’s ability to focus its attention on reminding people that the “music and art form is beautiful,” which he suggested his predecessors have failed to do.

“This is abnormal behavior,” Chuck D said about the gun violence issue that’s claimed countless rappers’ lives over the past few years.

He continued, “It is a tragedy, and the pain is unbearable…The peace, unity, love aspect of hip-hop should be revered.”

Chuck D went on to blame the “industry” for absorbing hip-hop culture en route to “normalizing” such behavior. “In any other walk of life, it would’ve been addressed far earlier,” he said. “You have people who’ve grown up thinking that hip-hop death is a normal thing.”

The hip-hop icon’s comments arrive hours after Takeoff was fatally shot in Houston.

According to TMZ’s initial report, which cited police sources and several alleged witnesses, local officials were first notified of the shooting “shortly after 2:30 a.m.” Both Quavo and Takeoff were at the site, which is said to have been a bowling alley where a dice game was taking place.

At one point, an altercation is alleged to have started, followed by gunfire, although additional details regarding what transpired in the moments leading up to the shooting have not been made public.

Earlier tonight, Quality Control shared their official statement on the Migos rapper’s passing.

“Senseless violence and a stray bullet has taken another life from this world and we are devastated,” they wrote.

“Please respect his family and friends as we continue to process this monumental loss.”

  • Police suspect TikTok challenge contributed to car crash killing 4 teens

Four teenagers were killed in a car crash in Buffalo Monday morning that has been linked to an alarming “Kia Challenge” on TikTok.

The Associated Press reports there were six passengers inside the vehicle at the time of the accident. The victims were between the ages of 14 and 17. As for the other two, one was the 16-year-old driver, who has since been treated and released. The other was hospitalized and placed in intensive care.

According to WGRZ, Buffalo Police Commissioner Joseph Gramaglia said investigators believe the car, which was stolen around 8 p.m. Sunday, was at the center of the “Kia challenge.” It instructs viewers how to steal a Kia model built within the last decade by using a cell phone charger and USB cord.

“They’re very easy unfortunately to steal,” Gramaglia said. “You can look up the information that’s been put out there. There are numerous cities across the country that are looking at looking into or have filed lawsuits against Kia because of the ease that they are able to steal these cars.”

The unidentified driver has been ticketed for criminal possession of stolen property and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle. The Erie County District Attorney’s office has launched an investigation into the crash with additional charges expected to be filed.

“It’s an extremely sad morning in the city of Buffalo when you lose four young lives in a horrific accident like this,” D.A. John Flynn said. “And now we need to do a thorough investigation to find out what happened and what the appropriate charges are against the driver of this vehicle.”

  • Major Mahama didn’t give me chance to know his identity – Assemblyman tells Court

The Assemblyman for Denkyira Obuasi, William Baah, who is standing trial together with 13 others for their respective roles in the lynching of Major Maxwell Mahama, has said he did not order the killing of the young military officer.

William Baah, who is the first accused person, also told the Court that the late Major Mahama “did not give me a chance to find out who he was.”

The Assemblyman, who is also a teacher and referred to by many as Misty, has denied the charge of abetment, with the 13 others also pleading not guilty to the charges of conspiracy and murder.

Mounting his defence to the charge of abetment, William Baah told the High Court in Accra that he tried to know major Mahama’s mission in the town, but he “pointed a gun at me.”

Being led by his lawyer George Bernard Shaw to give his Evidence-in-Chief, William Baah said his responsibility as an Assemblyman is to protect lives in the area, including “strangers.”

“I am in Assemblyman for Denkyira Obuasi. It is my responsibility to protect the lives of the people in the community and even strangers,” he told the Court.

“It is not my intention to harm anyone, and when the incident happened, I tried to go and ask the victim (Major Mahama) who he was and what his mission in the town was.

“Since he did not give me the chance to find out who he was but rather pointed a gun at me, I had no option than to go to the police station to report for the police to come for him,” the accused told the Court.

According to him, “as at the time I was going to the police station, no one had touched the victim or abused him verbally.”

    No order to murder

“What I have been charged with by the police is that I have abetted the killing of the deceased. I did not order anyone to use a stick or gun to murder the deceased.

He added that “When I was going there, I was not holding any stick or cutlass or gun” and “since I was born, till I got to JHS level, I have never gotten into a fight before, and I had never seen my parents fighting.”

The accused also told the Court that “it would be very difficult for me as an assemblyman to incite people to pick up weapons to attack any person and kill that person.”

He concluded his Evidence-in-Chief, saying “I do not know anything about what I have been charged with.”

    Call to Police Commander

William Baah had told the Court that, after he had made enquiries about where the gun major Mahama was holding after the incident, he called the police commander.

“I called the Police Commander, and I told him I have been trying to reach him on the phone but have not been able to get through to him, and I told him what had happened.”

The Police Commander he said confirmed to him that the person had died after he was conveyed to the hospital.

He told the Court that, after the crowd at the crime scene had cleared, he left back to school.

    Fear and panic

William Baah also told the Court that a friend of his at Diaso called and informed him that he had heard that the person who died was a soldier.

This information, he said, led to some of the people in the town running away.

Explaining to the Court why the people were running away, he said, “in the beginning, they thought they had killed an armed robber, but when they heard that the victim was a soldier, they panicked and started to run away.

Commander advised me to go into hiding

“I called the police commander on phone and talked with him, and he told me now that it had been confirmed that the victim was a soldier, and they had come to his office.”

He added: “I asked him what would be done now and when the soldiers come to the town, they wouldn’t know who is who, so I should go into hiding for now.

“So, I left that town and went to a town called Ampa Abena in the Diaso District.”

He told the Court that he stayed at Ampa Abena for two days, but upon hearing his name mentioned on the radio, that he had run away and the police were looking for him for investigation, he called the Commander and disclosed his location, and they came for him.

    Time with the Police

He told the Court that, after he was picked from his location, he was taken to the Cape Coast Police Station and interrogated.

He told the Court that, after interrogation, they took him to Police Headquarters handcuffed.

“They handcuffed me and made me sit at the edge of the seat with my toes suspended, and I was shaking, and anytime I try sitting properly, they scold me that we have killed a soldier.”

    Statements, video

He also told the Court that he moved to another office after telling him that some people had come, and “they showed me a video of what had happened, and they asked me to show them where I was standing and the dress I was wearing.”

He said when he was brought back to the Cape Coast Police headquarters, some of the things that he said were not captured in his statement.

“After my statement was taken, it was read back to me, and I realised I said some things that were not taken down, so I told him (officer), so he slammed his hand on the table, and I panicked.”

He added that the officer told him, “I was not the one to show him how to do his work.”

The Court presided over by Justice Mariama Owusu, a Justice of the Supreme Court sitting with additional responsibility as a High Court judge, has adjourned the sitting to October 31 for further Cross Examination.

    Background

The late Major Mahama of the 5th Infantry Battalion, Burma Camp, Accra, was on duty at Denkyira-Obuasi, and on May 29, 2017, some residents allegedly mistook him for an armed robber and lynched him.

The mob had ignored his persistent plea that he was an officer of the Ghana Armed Forces.

The Assembly Member and 13 others are still in prison custody after they pleaded not guilty to conspiracy to commit crime, murder, abetment of crime and other charges.

They are Baah, Bernard Asamoah, alias Daddy, Kofi Nyame,a.k.a Abortion, AkwasiBoah, Kwame Tuffour, Joseph Appiah Kubi, Michael Anim and Bismarck Donkor.

Others are John Bosie, Akwasi Baah, Charles Kwaning, Emmanuel Badu, Bismarck Abanga and Kwadwo.

  • Dzorwulu shooting: Our smart phones have sucked out common sense – Stonebwoy

Dancehall musician, Stonebwoy, has expressed his opinion following the horrific shooting and fire incident that occurred in Dzorwulu on Monday, October 24, 2022.

Earlier in a viral video, an unidentified driver of a V8 vehicle was allegedly shot by unknown assailants while his car was set on fire.

Although it is unclear what caused the incident, it reportedly stemmed from a land dispute.

Interestingly at the scene, an eyewitness was captured busy running a commentary in a 33-seconds video.

The said commentator was heard asking for help for the victim while exclaiming that he is not dead.

But reacting to this incident which has since sparked public interest, Stonebwoy appears peeved about the fact that people were more interested in recording the incident than rendering help to the victim.

“I saw a video of a man laying hurt on the floor in Dzorwulu. A residential area with his V8 bumped/crashed into all these while there was this man filming him shouting, he is not dead ooo. With other passerby also filming until the car caught fire. This man started shouting…we need fire Ghana fire service oo. Please fire service come o. and so on and so forth. Like I am so disappointed in some of us. Our smart phones have sucked out common sense,” he wrote on social media.

“He could have called an ambulance or fire service. Anyways realizing how long it takes for both to show up. How about quickly arranging for a taxi to carry this man to the hospital to save his life. I see many of us interested in filming the incidences that happen in order to post instead of actually saving the situation then dealing with the extras later. We can surely do better. Pls let’s try,” he added.

  • Woman dies after accidentally chocking on her dentures

A 48-year-old Colombian woman died after allegedly swallowing and choking on her dental prosthesis while sleeping.

Doctors always recommend removing dentures at night, to avoid any kind of accidents, a piece of advice that María Farías Guzmán, a 48-year-old woman from Colombia’s Armenia region did not follow. The woman reportedly went to sleep with her dental prosthesis in her mouth, only to accidentally swallow it, and become lodged in her throat somehow. Maria’s family would later tell investigators that they heard unusual noises coming from the woman’s room, so they decided to check on her, only to find that she wasn’t breathing.

María Farías Guzmán was rushed to Hospital del Sur in her home city of Quindio, where doctors attempted to resuscitate the woman and clear her airways. Unfortunately, their efforts were unsuccessful. A “respiratory tract obstruction” was pronounced as the cause of death.

“Her relatives became aware of the situation while she was sleeping, but she arrived at the hospital with no vital signs and staff performed resuscitation maneuvers and procedures to clear her airways, but she did not respond,” coronel William Alberto Zubieta Pardo, of the Quindio police department, told journalists.

Chocking on dental prostheses is considered extremely rare, so this case caused a lot of commotion online, with many people asking for more details on how it could have happened.

More details are expected as soon as the full forensic report is published, but in the meantime, better put those dentures in a glass of water at night, just to be sure.

He was found by a young man who went hunting for game in the bush.

A resident, Mr Okyere Boateng, told the media that a young man informed him about a pungent smell in the area whilst hunting for bush meat.

Mr Okyere said he organised some people and moved to the scene only to discover the almost decomposed body lying near the uncompleted building in the bush.

  • Family lives with corpse for over a year, thinking it’s only in a coma

The family of a 35-year-old man who died in April of last year due to Covid-19 have been living with his body ever since, thinking he was only in a coma and would eventually wake up.

Vimlesh Sonkar, a young Income Tax Officer in Ahmedabad was admitted to Moti hospital on 19th April 2021 and pronounced dead only three days later after becoming infected with the coronavirus. A death certificate was handed to the man’s family, but they refused to believe he had passed away and instead of giving him the last rights took his dead body home and cared for it as if he would eventually wake up. The man’s mummified remains were discovered a few days ago, when a team from his workplace was sent to investigate his long-term absence.

“The person had died on April 22, 2021 during the second wave of Covid. He had bilateral pneumonia,” the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) of Kanpur, Alok Ranjan, told The Sunday Express. “After he died, he was taken to a local nursing home where he was declared dead. A death certificate was also issued where the cause of death was mentioned as ‘bilateral pneumonia’”.

It’s unclear why Vimlesh’s family didn’t want to accept the fact that he had passed away. The Times of India reports that they took his body to another hospital for a second opinion, and even when doctors there confirmed his death, they still took his corpse back home and treated it like that of a coma patient that might wake up one day. According to the Free Press Journal, the family was ready to give the man his last rites, but first they put an oximeter on one of his fingers, and after it showed a pulse and the oxygen level in his blood, they decided he was still alive and canceled the funeral.

One thing is for sure, though – Vimlesh Sonkar’s family lived with his dead body in the same house for a year and a half, genuinely thinking that he was in a coma and would one day wake up. His wife, his parents, his brothers and their families, all of whom lived in the same house, took care of him, cleaning his body with Dettol disinfectant three times a day, changing his clothes daily and leaving the air conditioning on for 24 hours a day.

“Whenever his office asked the family about his whereabouts, they said Vimlesh was ill,” a senior police officer told The Indian Express. “The family also brought in oxygen cylinders and told locals that he was in a coma and was being treated at home. They were convinced that he was alive and will get better.”

The shocking discovery of Vimlesh Sonkar’s body was made by a team sent by his office to check why he had been absent from work for so long. Despite the care provided by members of his family, the 35-year-old man’s body had deteriorated severely since his death, with one eye-witness describing it as a mummy with the flesh dried up on the bones. That didn’t seem to give the family any clues, though.

Police was notified about the situation, and Vimlesh’s body was once again taken to a hospital where his death was once again confirmed. After this, his family finally agreed to have his body cremated.

“As no crime was committed here, we will not be taking any action against anyone. The family was still convinced that he was alive till his body was taken away on Friday by officials,” CMO Alok Ranjan said. “On Friday night, the remains of the body were cremated in the presence of police, other officials and Vimlesh’s family. The family members had to be convinced for the cremation.”

Police at Ejisu are investigating the death of a 23-year-old female house help at Awomaso in the Ashanti Region.

The deceased, Akua Kyem died on Sunday and her relatives suspect foul play alleging her mistress could be behind her death.

Police have, however, picked up the woman who the deceased lived with and worked for.

According to the relatives of the deceased, the 23-year-old worked as a house help at an apartment at Awomaso with her mistress.

The mistress however reported the death of the 23-year-old girl to them on Sunday after depositing the body at a morgue at the Emena Hospital.

The deceased’s grandfather, Kwarteng Peprah who narrated the incident to Citi News said “I had a call, and I was informed that my granddaughter who lives with a woman at Ahomaso was butchered to death. I called the woman to get some details. She told me that the girl left the house and returned home at about 1 am. I asked if the girl’s movement had changed when she came back home. I also asked her if there was blood coming from any part of the body since she was butchered and even if the girl was taken to the hospital. She said It was her 12-year-old daughter who drew her attention that the demise of the house.”

The mistress whose name has been given only as Mama Jane is currently in the custody of the Domeabra Police while the Ejisu Divisional Command has taken over investigations.

Mr. Peprah added that he and other relatives suspect foul play in the death of the house help.

“The body of my granddaughter was deposited at the Emena Hospital morgue. The upper part of the body seemed like she struggled with another person who inflicted wounds on her. I will not believe it if the woman tells me that my granddaughter was attacked outside. I suspected that she maltreated the deceased, which led to her death. We want the police to ensure the truth is brought to bear. We want the woman to also be responsible to contact relatives of her house help if there is an issue”, he alleged.

Police have picked up some implements from the residence of the mistress as part of their investigations.

  • Give me my flowers when I can still smell them

Funerals permitting, I start my Saturday mornings resting peacefully with my radio. Joy FM’s “Home Affairs” which starts soon after the 6 a.m. news dovetails into the Weekend City Show around 7.30a.m. and then crosses-over into Newsfile at 9 a.m.

While the first discusses family issues and relationships, the third discusses serious current affairs on national issues.

However, the “Weekend City Show” (WCS) is a comedy show designed to make listeners laugh and in the process hopefully, bring down unruly high blood pressures to the 120/80 doctors demand of us.

On Saturday, September 17, 2022, one of the quotes which came up during the humorous “Weekend City Show” programme was: “Give me my flowers while I can still smell them!”

Before delving into what the quote means, what is “Weekend City Show” about?

    Show

As stated, this is a Saturday morning comedy show. Hosted by Sammy Forson, it involves two actors, Joseph Langabel of Black Stars Cheering Squad fame and Reuben Adarkwa of Dome-Kwabenya fame.

Joining the cast himself, Sammy Forson humorously leads this trio as an “agent-provocateur” to entertain listeners.

They call themselves “weekend doctors” who heal listeners of their ailments by making them laugh during their comedy show.

After Langabel and Reuben had taken listeners to the moon and back by trying to explain the quote “Give me my flowers when I can still smell them,” Sammy Forson explained what the quote meant.

In the words of the American rapper Kanye West, it means “if you admire somebody, you should go ahead and tell them.”

Simply put, if you admire someone for any positive reason, make the person aware of it by praising him or her while alive.

Do not wait till after their death before showering them with praises.

    Flowers

Said to have started in ancient Graeco-Roman times over 2000 years ago, the physical act of giving flowers is a form of expression to show others one’s appreciation, love and gratitude for their good deeds.

The use of the quote took me down memory lane.

    Bob Cole

At a Saturday night “dance” in an Accra nightclub in the 1970’s, Ghana’s ace comedian/musician Bob Cole, who was going through difficult times financially, made a passionate appeal to the revelers that those who appreciated him should show their love to him while he was still alive.

He added that flowery praises, huge expenditures on a grand funeral to honour him after his death would serve no purpose as he lay motionless in his casket unable to appreciate goings-on.

In effect, “Give me my flowers while I can still smell them!”

Bob Cole’s situation resonates with that of many Ghanaian oldies who live in penury and die miserably.

However, on their death, their children living abroad jet in to give them grand “befitting funerals” at which money is splashed about rather obscenely!

The question often asked is, if such children had that much money, why did they not take good care of their parents?

    Friend’s quip

Congratulating a friend on his book launch some years ago, a lady quipped saying humorously in Twi, “Daakye w’ayie ase beye fe paa!” to wit “someday, your funeral will be a beautiful/grand one.”

Asked why that unusual way of congratulating him, she simply answered, the number of people there and the goodwill and love shown were testimony to what people thought and felt about him.

To her, he had been given his flowers while he could still smell them, living.

    Abraham Lincoln

The 16th President of the United States, who was assassinated in 1865 for abolishing the slave trade, Abraham Lincoln said, “A nation that does not honour its heroes will not long endure.”

Over time, it has been modified though with the same import to, “a nation that does not honour its heroes, is not worth dying for!”

Has Ghana honoured our deserving heroes?

In September 2001, Zimbabwe’s Centre for Peace Initiatives in Africa (CPIA), honoured the first African United Nations Force Commander, Ghana’s General E.A Erskine by naming a Centre after him called the “General Erskine Research and Documentation Centre” (GERDC.)

With his death in 2021, hopefully a monument will be named after him posthumously.

However, there is a waiting opportunity to honour Ghana’s second UN Force Commander and former Chief of the Defence Staff (CDS), General Seth Obeng, while he is alive.

While there certainly are others, I have restricted myself only to the institution I know well, the military.

As Bob Cole said, multitudinous platitudes heaped during thanksgiving services mean nothing to the deceased as they lie stiff in the “chop-box” as a little boy called his grandfather’s casket!

While they are alive, let us give deserving individuals the recognition, praise and honour for their contributions to Ghana or humanity and also to encourage the younger generation to make sacrifices, in the words,

“Give me my flowers while I can still smell them.”

Leadership, lead! Fellow Ghanaians, wake up!

The sad incident that happened on the dawn of Friday, January 28 at Asennua new site in the Kwabre East Municipality of the Ashanti Region has left many of the residents wondering how it all occurred as they suspect a foul play.

According to the angry eyewitnesses and other nearby residents who spoke to GhanaWeb, the late Gifty Offeh, popularly known as lady Gaga, before her demise, had not been on good terms with her husband, Mr. Asare who used to beat her like a boxing opponent.

An eye witness who spoke to GhanaWeb said on Thursday night before her death, the husband who had moved from the place for some time now, came to the woman’s house, engaging her in a scuffle. Shortly after they had been separated, Mrs. Offeh was heard crying and complaining of severe stomach pain, and in the process of her complaints, she was also heard mentioning and accusing the husband of causing her death.

According to the eyewitnesses, Lady Gaga was rushed to the Mamponteng government hospital for treatment, but unfortunately, she passed on around 2:30am on Friday.

The house in which their children had slept, mysteriously caught fire immediately the news broke that she was dead. The eyewitness recounted.

“The husband was nowhere to be found by then,” a resident revealed.

“She was heard mentioning the husband’s name, ‘oh Asare, so are you killing me. Oh Asare, why are you killing me.’ This was during the time she was complaining of severe stomach pain,” an eyewitness said on condition of anonymity.

Fortunately for the children, they were all rescued by nearby residents but the whole house was completely burnt.

The residents have however demanded the arrest of Mr. Asare, the deceased’s husband who is currently at large.

“Why shouldn’t we accuse him? Shortly after the confrontations, she was heard complaining of severe stomach pain whilst she was mentioning and accusing Asare, her husband. She died, and returning back to console her children, we found them in a fire also at the verge of death, how?” a resident quizzed in astonishment.

Confirming the incident to GhanaWeb, assembly member for the Asennua electoral area, Hon. Kaakyire Asumadu said the husband is still on the run and has since not been found. According to him, the case has been reported to the Mamponteng district police command and a serious manhunt has been launched for his arrest.

The body of the deceased has since been deposited at the Ankaase hospital morgue for autopsy and preservation.

  • ‘Unusually high’ deaths in Nigeria raise queries

The authorities in the north-eastern Nigerian state of Yobe say 471 people have died in the past five weeks, adding it is an unusually high number of deaths from health issues.

It is not clear whether the deaths are linked to coronavirus

Nigeria has so far confirmed nearly 5,000 cases of the virus, with 164 deaths.

Yobe State Commissioner for Health Muhammad Lawan Gana told the BBC that an initial investigation found most deaths were of elderly people with pre-existing medical conditions such as hypertension and diabetes.

But some had shown symptoms of coronavirus.

He said the deaths occurred in just four areas of the state.

There have been reports of hundreds of unexplained deaths across northern Nigeria in recent weeks – including in the populous state of Kano.

The authorities are cautious to link them directly to the coronavirus pandemic, saying investigations are being carried out.

Low testing rates across Nigeria are raising fears that many people might be carrying the virus undetected.

  • Could more be done to avoid care home deaths?

The Mirror’s Dan Bloom asks whether deaths in care homes may have been avoided if more rigorous testing and screening had been carried out and residents who were discharged from hospital had been routinely tested before 16 April.

Mr Raab says the government will learn lessons from this unique and unprecedented public health crisis, including for care homes.

He says the objective has been to monitor and manage the “ebb and flow” of the transmission of the virus in care homes.

Prof Doyle says it is an interesting question. She suggests a high mortality rate in care homes was to be expected given that over-75s were particularly vulnerable to high doses of the virus.

However, she says a future review of the handling of the crisis will look at the “structure of care homes”.

  • Chinese firm wants to build dam on Nile River

Uganda has received an application for a licence to build a hydroelectric power plant on the Nile River from a Chinese firm, documents seen by Reuters News Agency show.

The $1.4bn plant, if approved, will expand the East African country’s power generation by 40 percent, a regulatory official who also confirmed the application, said.

The firm, POWERCHINA International Group Limited (PIGL), wants to develop the Ayago Hydroelectric Power Station, located on a section of the Nile between lakes Kyoga and Albert, according to its licence application.

“We have called for comments from the public on their proposed project,” Julius Wandera, spokesman for the state-run power regulator, Electricity Regulatory Authority (ERA) told Reuters on Tuesday.

The ERA licences all power generators in the country and is also responsible for setting generation and end-user power tariffs.

The Ayago power plant will have a capacity of 840 megawatts (MW) and, when successfully developed, would be Uganda’s largest power plant.

The Karuma hydroelectric dam, upstream of Ayago and due to be completed early this year by China’s Synohydro Corporation, is currently Uganda’s largest power project.

The ERA would also conduct its own due diligence on POWERCHINA International to ascertain whether it had the financial and technical capacity to execute the project, Wandera said.

“By April we should be communicating our final decision on their application to them,” he said.

According to their application, the firm plans to raise funds for the project through a 25-75 percent mix of equity and debt.

The project could potentially ramp up Uganda’s generation capacity by 40 percent to about 2,800MW according to calculations from data available from the energy ministry.

In recent years, Uganda has been wooing private-sector energy investors and taking loans from China and other sources to help boost power production to meet fast-growing demand.

To make the sector attractive to foreign investors, the government abolished subsidies for consumers and introduced a tariff-setting system that is benchmarked on movements in key parameters such as inflation, foreign exchange and oil prices.

Uganda is one of six countries that signed a 2010 Cooperative Framework Agreement (CFA) that allows upstream Nile basin countries to develop projects along the river without Egypt’s consent as it was in a previous colonial-era agreement on the use of Nile waters.

Building dams on the Nile has proven controversial in recent years with Egypt, which almost entirely depends on the water from the river, seeing them as a national security threat.

Ethiopia is currently building a dam on its section of the Nile. The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam is about 70 percent complete and promises to provide much-needed electricity to Ethiopia’s 100 million people.

However, Egyptian officials are concerned that filling the reservoir behind the dam could significantly reduce the amount of Nile water available to Egypt.

The two countries are negotiating a way forward and are expected to strike a deal in the coming weeks.
