Retirement is not in my books right now – Dede Ayew addresses speculation

Former Black Stars captain Andre Ayew says speculation about his imminent retirement is unfounded, insisting he feels fit, healthy, and not ready to hang up his boots.

Ayew is currently playing for Dutch Eredivisie outfit NAC Breda after parting ways with French side Le Havre AC at the end of last season. His deal with his current side is a short one, set to last till the end of this campaign.

Ayew’s last game for Ghana was with the Black Stars at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Côte d’Ivoire, and since then, he hasn’t received a call-up.

Speaking during an interview with ESPN, the midfielder explained that he focuses on maintaining his fitness and improving each day, both on and off the pitch.

“I never thought about it (retirement) because my body is good, I feel good. I live my life day to day, so I prepare myself every time to have a better tomorrow on the field and off the field,” he said.

“I don’t think about that. When the moment comes, your body will tell you,” he added.

Since joining NAC Breda, Ayew has made six league appearances, including one start, as he works toward regaining full match fitness.

Ayew’s stance on retirement is similar to Al-Nassr’s Cristiano Ronaldo, who in 2025 noted that he could play for another 10 years with his ‘kind of body’.

This was after he shared his excitement after learning about his physiological age.

The Whoop platform, a wearable fitness and health tracking platform designed to help users monitor and improve their performance, recovery, and overall well-being, analysed Ronaldo and discovered that his physiological age is 28.9 years old.

In reaction to the results from Whoop, the Al-Nassr forward expressed satisfaction, suggesting that he could play for the next decade.

“I can’t believe it is so good. This means I will play for another ten years. When you’re young, you think you will live forever, that you will always be strong, that you’re unbreakable,” he told Whoop.

He, however, acknowledged the effect ageing has on the body, particularly as a footballer.

In order to keep his form and shape for optimal performance on the pitch, he shared how he “prioritizes recovery and sleep much more than before.

.”…at 25, it is not the same as when you’re 30, especially in football. I still feel good.”

Ronaldo stated that his ability to remain strong physically at 40 years old is a remarkable feat, and he hopes to continue in the same form to play football for a longer period than expected.

The former Real Madrid legend is taunted for his fitness and form even at age 40 as Ronaldo continues to be one of the most prolific goal scorers for Al Nassr in the Saudi Pro League, having scored 24 goals in 29 appearances.

Cristiano Ronaldo is one of the ‘greatest’ footballers in history.

With over a two-decade career, he has won 33 major trophies, including five UEFA Champions League titles, seven league titles across England, Spain, and Italy, and the UEFA Euro 2016 with Portugal.

He also holds the record for most goals in UEFA Champions League history (140) and is the all-time top scorer in international football with 136 goals for Portugal.

His total senior career goals stand at an astounding 935.

He has also won 5 Ballon d’Ors, 4 European Golden Boots, and multiple accolades, including FIFA Best Men’s Player and UEFA Best Player in Europe awards.

Manager of former Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan, Samuel Anim Addo, has weighed in on the Ayew family’s discontent over Black Stars head coach Otto Addo’s explanation for leaving out Andre Dede Ayew from the squad.

In response to Fiifi Tackie, the Ayew family’s spokesperson, Anim Addo shared a cryptic message on social media. The Chief Executive Officer of Young Apostles simply wrote: “No condition is permanent.”

Fiifi Tackie had earlier criticized Otto Addo’s remarks about Dede Ayew, describing them as disrespectful.

“Such remarks are not only disrespectful to Ayew but also undermine his sacrifices and the pride he has brought to Ghanaian football. Coach Addo’s comments are unprofessional and unbecoming of someone in his position,” Fiifi Tackie said.

Shocking and dissappointing – Ayew family responds to Otto Addo’s comments on Dede

Spokesperson for the Ayew family,Fiifi Tackie, has strongly criticized Black Stars head coach Otto Addo over remarks he deemed disrespectful towards Andre Dede Ayew.

Otto Addo, while explaining his decision to omit Ayew from Ghana’s squad for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Chad and Madagascar, stated that the player’s current performances do not meet his expectations. He further noted that other players are currently ahead of Ayew in the team’s pecking order.

Despite the exclusion, Addo emphasized that Ayew could return to the national team if his performances improve.

“For Andre [Dede Ayew], the team is always open, and I am looking. If we need him, we will call him. At the moment, I see others ahead of him,” he told JoySports.

Reacting to the comment, Tackie expressed his outrage at why the coach would sideline Dede Ayew, who has been actively playing for French side Le Havre this season.

“Coach Otto Addo’s comments on Andre Ayew are shocking and disappointing. On numerous occasions, the same coach has said that one of the key criteria for selection into the national team is active club participation.

“How can Ayew, Ghana’s most-capped player, a three-time World Cup veteran, and a proven leader, be deemed unworthy even when playing well at his club in the French league? Ayew’s legacy and commitment to the Black Stars are undeniable. His experience, leadership, and track record in major tournaments speak volumes,” he said.

The Ayew family spokesperson further slammed Otto Addo for allegedly making rude comments about Dede Ayew and disregarding his legacy and sacrifices for the national team.

“Such remarks are not only disrespectful to Ayew but also undermine his sacrifices and the pride he has brought to Ghana football. Coach Addo’s comments are unprofessional and unbecoming of someone in his position,” he added.

Dede Ayew’s exclusion from the squad comes after Otto Addo previously left him out of Ghana’s team for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, which took place in 2024.

2026 World Cup: See Dede Ayew’s reaction to his exclusion from the Black Stars team

Former Ghanaian midfielder Emmanuel Agyemang-Badu has revealed that André Dede Ayew is not bothered about being left out of the Black Stars squad for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

According to Agyemang-Badu, he spoke with Ayew after the squad announcement, and the Le Havre forward remains unshaken by his exclusion from the national team.

“I spoke to Dede Ayew, and he is not worried,” Agyemang-Badu said during an interview with Connect FM.

The retired footballer noted that, although Dede’s recent performances for his club side have improved, head coach Otto Addo’s decision to exempt him from the squad should be respected by the players and the public.

“We all know that player selection for the Black Stars is based on performance. Dede is delivering, but we must respect the coach’s choice,” he added.

Before the squad was announced, Dede Ayew reaffirmed his commitment to the national team, stating that he has no plans to retire anytime soon.

Coach Otto Addo’s squad selection saw Thomas Partey return after a brief absence, while Ayew was once again excluded.

Ghana’s Black Stars will take on Chad at the Accra Sports Stadium on March 21, 2025, before traveling to face Madagascar on March 24, 2025.

The team currently sits second in Group I with nine points, the same as leaders Comoros. Madagascar is third with seven points, while Mali follows with five.

Dede Ayew, Asamoah Gyan soon to be honoured – SWAG announces

General Secretary of the Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG), Charles Osei Asibey, has revealed that the association is planning to honor Ghanaian football stars Andre Ayew and Asamoah Gyan for their outstanding contributions to the sport.

He explained that SWAG wants to recognize the dedication and achievements of the two players in Ghanaian football.

The honor is expected to take place at the SWAG Awards, which will be held on Friday, January 24, 2025.

In an interview on Asempa FM, Asibey admitted that the information was supposed to be kept secret. However, he explained that SWAG believes Dede Ayew and Asamoah Gyan truly deserve to be honored.

“This is something that I don’t have to say because it’s private, however, we have made plans to honor the legendary Asamoah Gyan and Dede Ayew for their contributions to Ghana football, so we will continue to consider it,” he stated.

However, Asibey clarified that no special awards have been designated for the legends at this time.

“There is no special award for them at the moment; we are not in those times,” he added.

Show some respect, let Ayew know his future with Black Stars – Awudu Issaka to Otto Addo

Former Ghanaian youth star Awudu Isaka has called on Black Stars coach Otto Addo to engage in a discussion with team captain Andre Dede Ayew about his future with the national team.

Isaka, who disagrees with Ayew’s recent exclusion from the squad, argues that the captain has earned his place and deserves more respect.

He expressed his belief that Ayew could continue to play a valuable role by mentoring younger players, even though he acknowledges that age might have affected Ayew’s performance.

In an interview with Angel TV, Isaka emphasised that Ayew’s experience and leadership are assets to the team and should be utilised effectively.

“I think the coach should tell him that he won’t call him again. He should call him privately. He was expecting to be called but didn’t get an invitation, so he is okay.

“He has paid his dues to Ghana, and we were all witnesses. Dede Ayew might have reached this stage, but he has the experience and knowledge to help the young players.

Andre Ayew has now been left out of the Black Stars squad for the third consecutive time, with his last call-up occurring in late 2023.

Coach Otto Addo has clarified that Ayew’s absence is part of a deliberate strategy to focus on developing a future-orientated team.

The German-trained coach stressed that his current objective is to build a squad predominantly from younger players, which influenced his decision to exclude Ayew from the recent selection.

“We are looking at the future or the long-term development; that’s mainly why we invited younger players and left out André Ayew.”

Dede Ayew, Tariq Lamptey, 2 others unlikely to make it for Otto Addo’s Angola-Niger squad

Black Stars head coach Otto Addo has reportedly submitted his squad list to the Ghana Football Association (GFA) for the upcoming 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Angola and Niger.

The official announcement is expected soon, with the matches scheduled for early September. Key players may be absent due to various reasons, including lack of club activity or limited playing time this season.

Ghana will face Angola in Kumasi on September 5, 2024, followed by a match against Niger on September 9.

Here are players set who could miss Ghana’s squad

    Andre Ayew

Black Stars skipper Andre Ayew is a free agent and could land a deal in the window’s final days.

He has been a free agent since leaving Le Havre in the French Ligue 1 at the end of the 2023/2024 season.

    Salis Samed

The midfielder at RC Lens has been relegated to the reserve squad amid ongoing uncertainty about his future.

He is currently in discussions with French clubs Nantes and Montpellier, both of which are eager to finalise a deal before the transfer window closes. Due to these unresolved negotiations, he has missed the first three matches of the season.

    Daniel Amartey

The Ghanaian centre-back has found minutes hard to come by during his time at Besiktas, costing him a place in the Black Stars.

He departed the club after a season and has been a free agent since. According to the report, Celtic have expressed interest in signing the defender but he has not been offered a concrete deal yet.

    Tariq Lmaptey

Brighton and Hove Albion defender Tariq Lamptey has just returned from a knock that sidelined him for the club’s opening game.

Although he was on the bench during Brighton’s victory over Manchester United in their second match, he didn’t see any action.

Due to concerns about his fitness, there’s a possibility that he might not be included in Otto Addo’s upcoming squad for Ghana.

The Ayew family refutes claims of resignation of the duo

The Ayew family has refuted rumours that Jordan and Andre Dede Ayew have left the Black Stars suddenly.

The family’s spokeswoman, Fiifi Tackie, declared the allegation to be untrue in a statement on Tuesday, June 4, 2024.

He clarified that while his brother Jordan is practicing with the team ahead of the 2024 FIFA World Cup qualification matches, Andre Ayew is now on vacation following his exclusion from the Black Stars squad.

‘Please be advised that recent reports of the Ayew brothers, Andre and Jordan, resigning from the national team are entirely false.

Andre has had a remarkable season, scoring 6 goals in all competitions, and is currently enjoying a well-deserved holiday.’

‘Jordan is currently in the camp of the national team, and he is proud and honoured to be part of the team for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Mali and the Central African Republic.

They remain dedicated to their careers and committed to the national team.

We urge fans and supporters to disregard the misinformation and continue to support the Ayew brothers and the Black Stars,’ stated Fiifi Tackie on behalf of Andre and Jordan.

According to earlier media reports, the brothers had made the decision to leave the national team.

According to the article, the family felt it was unjust that Andre Ayew was left off of the most recent Black Stars roster, which led to the purported decision.

Andre’s removal from the Black Stars squad was a move that the family accepted with good intentions, according to Solar Ayew, the boys’ uncle.

‘We’ve taken Andre Ayew’s omission from the Black Stars squad normally. He was earning invites when he was unattached, so his omission will surprise not only me but everyone because he is at the top of his game now. This is normal for the Ayew family,’ he told Asempa FM.”

In the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, Ghana is slated to play Mali on Thursday, June 6, 2024, and then host the Central African Republic on Monday, June 10, 2024.

Former Ghana international Asamoah Gyan has shared his views on coach Otto Addo’s decision to exclude Andre Ayew from the Black Stars for the upcoming 2026 World Cup qualifiers, emphasizing that the decision must be respected.

Coach Otto Addo left captain Andre Ayew out of Ghana’s squad for the matches against Mali and the Central African Republic in the 2026 World Cup Qualifiers.

Commenting on Ayew’s exclusion, Gyan acknowledged that Ayew has given his best for the Black Stars, but ultimately, the coach’s decision is final.

“For me, Andre has done so much for Ghana.

He started way back in 2007, and he has been consistent in the national team. He is the most capped player,” Gyan said on Joy FM.

“I think the coach has made his decision. Personally, I played with Andre, and he has done everything for Ghana, but this is the situation whereby we have to move on.

The coach has made his decision.”

Ayew family set for family meeting over son’s snub from Ghana’s World Cup qualifiers squad

The exclusion of Andre Dede Ayew from the Black Stars squad for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Mali and the Central African Republic has prompted an urgent family meeting.

The uncles and parents of the Black Stars captain are planning to gather to deliberate on the future of their son.

This information was shared by Solar Ayew, a retired Ghanaian footballer and elder brother of the iconic Abedi Pele, during an interview with Angel FM.

According to Solar Ayew, the family was not surprised by the development and will convene to discuss the issue before releasing an official statement.

Andre Ayew’s absence from the 26-man squad, announced by coach Otto Addo on Wednesday, May 29, 2024, was particularly notable.

Following the squad announcement, Fiifi Tackie, the spokesperson for the Ayew family, issued a statement reaffirming Andre Dede Ayew’s dedication to the Black Stars.

In a social media post on Wednesday, May 29, 2024, Fiifi Tackie emphasized that since his debut in 2007, Andre Ayew has consistently demonstrated loyalty and commitment to the national team and will continue to do so.

Andre Ayew’s dedication to Ghana is unwavering and lifelong, a commitment that began in his childhood and remains unshakable to this day.

Through thick and thin, he stands proudly as a son of the nation, his passion and loyalty to Ghana burning bright for all to see. Today, tomorrow, and forever, Andre Ayew’s heart beats for Ghana,” he said.

Revealing the background work leading up to the squad announcement, Otto Addo explained that he had conversations with Andre Ayew and that the Black Stars skipper was not entirely convinced by his decision to exclude him from the squad.

According to Otto Addo, the Black Stars skipper did not agree with the decision to be dropped from the squad, but despite Ayew’s opposition, he still holds him in high regard.

“I had a long talk with André and gave him the reasons why he is not in the squad. I talk to players directly and don’t like to disclose information about our discussions. This is the decision we took, and it’s not like he necessarily agreed, but I still have great respect for him,” he said.

Since making his Ghana debut in 2007, Andre Dede Ayew has played 120 times for the Black Stars, scoring 24 goals.

  • The Curtain Falls: Andre Ayew’s omission from Ghana squad signals end of an era

The Curtain Falls: Andre Ayew’s omission from Ghana squad signals end of an era

You rarely see a Ghana coach meet the press to announce his squad.

When the Ghana Football Association revealed Otto Addo would have a press conference on Wednesday to unveil his squad for the World Cup qualifiers against Mali and Central African Republic, eyebrows were raised.

It could be that the association wanted to formally introduce their new coach, or some difficult decisions were made pertaining to the squad and further explanation was needed. The latter proved to be the reason, with one one name absent from the squad – Andre Ayew (34).

“At the moment, Andre is a living legend of Ghana. It’s unbelievable what he did for the country and it’s the most difficult decision because I like him as a person and also as a player. And this is a decision we took not like we totally agreed but I gave him the explanation,” new head coach Addo explained to the press.

The exclusion of the Black Stars captain has sent shockwaves through the country. For years, a growing contingent of fans anticipated a national team setup without Ayew, only to have their hopes dashed as the prolific captain’s omission seemed to become an increasingly distant impossibility.

Even when whispers intensified on Ayew’s potential exclusion from the Ghana squad, the veteran’s name would invariably appear when the final roster was unveiled, leaving many to question whether his presence was indispensable.

However, this time it was a reality.

In the past few years, Ayew has been the talisman, the heartbeat of the Ghanaian national team. His leadership, goals, and sheer presence have been instrumental in some of the Black Stars’ most memorable moments in recent times.

Yet, with the hands of time unforgiving, and a new generation of talent emerging, head coach Addo appears ready to turn the page and embark on a rebuilding process that may not include the veteran forward.

Ayew’s Indelible Mark on Ghanaian Football
Despite holding dual French and Ghanaian citizenship, Ayew’s allegiance always lay with the West African nation, inspired by his father’s legacy. However, his path to representing Ghana was not without its twists and turns.

Initially, Ayew entertained the idea of playing for France, citing the Ghana Football Association’s failure to reach out to him. He even participated in training camps with the French U-18 team and turned down multiple overtures from their U-21 side. At one point, Ayew issued a stern warning, declaring: “At this moment there is only one choice to make because I have only received an invitation from one country and that is France.”

Ultimately, though, the allure of following in his father’s footsteps proved too strong to ignore. Ayew’s journey with the Black Stars began at the youth level, where he captained the U-20 team to glory at the 2009 African Youth Championship and the FIFA U-20 World Cup, scoring crucial goals along the way.

On August 7, 2007, Ayew received his first senior call-up from Ghana coach Claude Le Roy, making his debut as a late substitute against Senegal. His international career would reach new heights at the 2010 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), where he scored his first goal for the Black Stars and helped them reach the final.

Ayew’s impact on the world stage was felt at the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa. His pinpoint lob set up Asamoah Gyan’s winning goal against the United States in the Round of 16, earning him the Man of the Match award from FIFA.

Despite a brief retirement in 2013 due to disputes with the Ghana FA, Ayew returned to lead the Black Stars to the 2014 World Cup, scoring crucial goals against the United States and Germany.

Now the captain of the national team, Ayew’s influence has only grown stronger. He led Ghana’s charge at the 2022 World Cup, becoming the only Ghanaian player to feature in the nation’s last three World Cup appearances. His equalizing goal against Portugal underscored his enduring importance, even as his missed penalty against Uruguay in the decisive group stage match proved costly.

If Ghana has seen the last of Ayew, then he leaves as the country’s most-capped player with 120 appearances. He is Ghana’s highest scorer at the AFCON and also has played the most games in the tournament’s history.

Regardless of what the future holds, Andre Ayew’s legacy as a Ghanaian football icon is secure. His achievements, both on and off the pitch, have cemented his place among the nation’s all-time greats.

    A Changing of the Guard

Prior to the squad announcement, it was widely reported in Ghana that Addo travelled across Europe communicating his vision of moving forward with a younger core to some senior figures of the national team.

Ayew, who has had a fairly decent Ligue 1 season with Le Havre scoring five goals, is a victim of the old guard who is being phased out by the former Borussia Dortmund talent coach.

While the end of an era is always bittersweet, it also ushers in a new dawn filled with hope and potential. As one chapter closes, another begins, and the Black Stars will look to a new generation of stars to carry the torch and continue the quest for glory on the grandest stages of African and world football.

At 34 years old, and with the next World Cup two years away, it is understandable that Addo may be looking to the future. The German-born coach has already shown a willingness to integrate promising youngsters.

In his first squad upon his return as Black Stars coach, 14 out of the 26 players called up were under 25 years old. The call-ups to players like Nathaniel Adjei (21), Forson Amankwah (21), Francis Abu (23), and Ibrahim Osman (19) were an indication of the direction Addo wanted to take in his second tenure.

It’s been back-to-back group stage exits at the AFCON for Ghana, hence the cue to rebuild a once-strong team.

In the absence of Ayew, Kudus will play as the number 10 as the West Ham midfielder embarks on his own legacy with the national team.

The 23-year-old, who has 11 goals in 32 games, is now in pole position to lead the next generation of the Black Stars.

While Ayew’s exclusion from the upcoming qualifiers may not necessarily signify an outright retirement from international football, it could clearly indicate that a guard changing is underway in the Ghana camp.

    What next for Andre Ayew?

Though Ayew is 34 years, he showed no signs of slowing down in the just ended Ligue 1 season. He missed pre-season and joined Le Havre as a free agent after the summer transfer window. However, his determination and willingness to play saw him get up to speed in no time and become a mainstay in the Le Havre starting XI.

He made his debut for Le Club doyen late November and then went on to play 1184 minutes. In his 20 games played for the Ligue 1 side, he scored six goals in all competitions. His one-year contract with Le Havre ends in June 2024.

Since 2019, Ayew has played for five clubs namely Swansea, Fenerbahce, Al Sadd, Nottingham Forest, and Le Havre. Though this proves he still belongs at the highest level, it also hints that clubs aren’t willing to commit long-term with the forward.

Earlier this season, when Ayew was without a club, he was called to the national team by Chris Hughton. But the standards under Addo are different and even Ayew’s best run of form in the latter part of the season didn’t seem to be enough.

Andre Ayew played for Ghana in the recent AFCON

If Andre Ayew’s best run of form this season couldn’t secure him a place in the Black Stars squad, it raises serious doubts about his chances of a future call-up under Otto Addo. The head coach’s vision for the national team seems focused on rejuvenation, as evidenced by the squad’s average age of 24.4 years for the recent qualifiers against Mali and Central African Republic.

This figure is even lower than the average age of 24.7 years that Addo fielded during the 2022 World Cup campaign, where Ayew was a core member.

With the Black Stars undergoing a clear transition towards a younger generation of players, the 34-year-old Ayew may find himself on the outside looking in, unless he can produce an exceptional run of form that simply cannot be ignored by the national team technical team.

Addo’s commitment to rebuilding with a fresh crop of talent could very well signal the definitive end of an era for the long-serving captain.

“Today, tomorrow, and forever, Andre Ayew’s heart beats for Ghana” – Fifi Tackie

The spokesperson for the Ayew brothers, Fifi Tackie, has seemingly reacted to the exclusion of Black Stars captain Andre Ayew from Otto Addo’s 26-man squad for the upcoming crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying matches against Mali and Central African Republic next month.

At a press briefing on Wednesday, Otoo Addo revealed the squad and mentioned that he had an extensive conversation with Ghana’s record appearance holder before making the decision. However, he chose not to disclose the details of their discussion.

“I had a long chat with Andre and gave him the reason why he is not in the squad. I talk to players directly and I don’t like to put information out about what we spoke about. This is the decision we took and it’s not like he necessarily agreed, but I still have big respect for him,” he said.

In a post after this news, Mr Tackie in a post on X platform reminded Ghanaians of Ayew’s dedication to the country despite the odds. He noted that Ayew remains proud of his country and will forever love his motherland.

“Andre Ayew’s dedication to Ghana is unwavering and lifelong, a commitment that began in his childhood and remains unshakeable to this day. Through thick and thin, he stands proudly as a son of the nation, his passion and loyalty to Ghana burning bright for all to see. Today, tomorrow, and forever, Andre Ayew’s heart beats for Ghana,” he wrote.

Ayew, 34, has netted 5 goals in 19 league appearances for French Ligue 1 side Le Havre this season.

Ghana, currently 4th in their group with three points, will face Mali in Bamako on June 6 before hosting the Central African Republic in Kumasi on June 10.

Otto Addo drops Ayew from Ghana-Mali, CAR squad in qualifiers clash – Club reports

Black Stars coach Otto Addo is set to announce his squad for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Mali and the Central African Republic (CAR) today, Wednesday, May 29, 2024.

Reports indicate that team captain Andre Dede Ayew has been excluded from the lineup for the doubleheader.

According to Angel FM, Ayew, who concluded the French Ligue 1 season with five goals for Le Havre, was not invited by Addo.

The credibility of these reports is bolstered by a list published by Le Havre, detailing players called up for national duty in June.

This list includes Toure Abdoulaye of Guinea, Sangate Arouna of Senegal, Daler Kuzyaev of Russia, Nego Loic of Hungary, Kone Mohamed, and Operi Christopher of Ivory Coast, but notably omits Ayew.

The omission of Ayew is believed to align with Otto Addo’s new strategy for the team.

Addo recently held discussions with senior players such as Thomas Partey, Andre Ayew, and Daniel Amartey to outline his vision for the team’s future.

Addo plans to gradually reduce reliance on veteran players and focus on developing younger talents.

While some experienced players will still feature in the upcoming qualifiers, their involvement is expected to decrease in future selections.

The revamped Black Stars squad is likely to be led by Mohammed Kudus of West Ham United, with significant contributions from Antoine Semenyo, Kamaldeen Sulemana, and Tariq Lamptey, among others.

Black Stars will face Mali in Bamako on June 6, followed by a match against the Central African Republic at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium on June 10.

This is what Otto Addo has decided after crunch meeting with Ayew, Partey, Amartey, others

The future roles of some veteran Black Stars players are uncertain due to a strategic shift by coach Otto Addo.

According to reports from Angel FM, ahead of announcing the squad for upcoming matches against Mali and the Central African Republic, Otto Addo has had discussions with senior Black Stars players.

Addo reportedly held individual meetings with players like Thomas Partey, Andre Ayew, and Daniel Amartey to share his vision.

The reports indicate that Addo plans to gradually reduce reliance on older players and focus on developing younger talent within the team.

Although the veteran players are expected to be part of the squad for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Mali and the Central African Republic, their future involvement may be limited.

The revamped Black Stars are set to feature Mohammed Kudus of West Ham United as a central figure, with Antoine Semenyo, Kamaldeen Sulemana, Tariq Lamptey, and others expected to take on more prominent roles.

Otto Addo is expected to announce the squad for the matches against Mali and the Central African Republic soon.

Earlier reports suggested Addo would arrive in Ghana this week for the squad announcement, but updates on Monday, May 20, 2024, indicate his arrival may be delayed until after the UEFA Champions League final.

The Black Stars are scheduled to play Mali in Bamako on June 6, followed by a match against the Central African Republic at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium on June 10.

Ayew’s current record at club will be hard for Otto Addo to ignore in call-ups – Saani Daara

Former Communications Director of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Ibrahim Saanie Daara, has expressed his view on the challenging situation facing Black Stars coach Otto Addo regarding the inclusion of captain Andre Dede Ayew in the squad.

Ayew has encountered difficulties with the Black Stars due to their recent performances, particularly with group stage exits in the last two AFCON editions and the 2022 FIFA World Cup under his captaincy.

While some fans advocate for a transition away from Ayew, Saanie Daara argues that it will be incredibly tough to omit him from the squad at this juncture.

Despite the team’s struggles, Ayew’s performance in the French Ligue 1, where he has scored 5 goals this season, with one nominated for Goal of the Season, suggests that the 34-year-old still has much to offer.

In a post on X, the former GFA spokesperson stated, “To think that Andre Ayew is able to produce such a goal that wins the Goal of the Month award in the French top flight shows that he has more to offer. Well done, Capi.”

“This will be hard for Otto Addo to ignore in his Black Stars call-ups,” he added.

Coach Otto Addo is expected to name Ghana’s squad for the game against Mali in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers in the coming weeks.

Andre Ayew reaches 200-match milestone in Ligue 1

Ghana Black Stars’ captain, Andre Ayew, achieved a significant milestone in his football career by reaching 200 appearances in the French Ligue 1.

His latest appearance for Le Havre on Friday night marked this achievement, despite his team’s 1-0 loss to Nice as they continue their battle to stay in the top-flight.

Andre Ayew’s journey in Ligue 1 has seen him represent three clubs. He began at Olympique Marseille, where he made 160 appearances and scored 44 goals, starting his professional career.

He then had a loan spell at Lorient, featuring in 22 Ligue 1 games and scoring three goals. Ayew returned to France in November 2023, joining Le Havre, where he has played 18 games and scored five goals so far.

In total, Andre Ayew has scored 52 goals and provided 19 assists in his 200 Ligue 1 appearances.

This milestone puts him two appearances ahead of his father, Abedi Pele, in the league. Andre has also scored ten more goals and provided five more assists than his father during their respective Ligue 1 careers.

Former Black Stars captain, Asamoah Gyan, has clarified his relationship with teammate Andre Dede Ayew, emphasising that while they have played together for over a decade in the Black Stars, they are not close friends off the pitch.

Gyan highlighted that, while he has always had a strong bond with Ayew on the field, their relationship does not extend beyond their professional duties.

He explained that both he and Ayew have their own separate circles of friends and social activities outside of football.

However, Gyan stressed that when they are in camp with the Black Stars, they are teammates and work together diligently to contribute to the team’s success.

“I usually say Andre is my teammate. Sometimes people misjudge. He’s a teammate that I talk to and laugh with, but we’re not friends,” Gyan said on Atinka TV.

He added, “Friends are people that you share secrets with. Andre is a teammate that I relate well to in camp and we have teamwork on the field but it doesn’t make him my friend.”

The ex-Ghana captain also asserted that people created a rivalry between himself and Ayew, which is unnecessary.

“People have created unnecessary rivalry, which is okay. But at the end of the day, we all have our people to hang out with but on the team, we are all teammates.”

Asamoah Gyan and Andre Ayew shared the pitch together and both later became leaders of Ghana’s national team.

The money played a role – Dede Ayew on move to join Swansea City

Andre Ayew, the captain of the Black Stars, has opened up about his move to Swansea in 2015, expressing satisfaction with his decision.

Ayew’s introduction to the Premier League with Swansea was highly successful, marked by an instant impact as he scored a debut goal against Chelsea and was honored as the Premier League’s Player of the Month in his first month at the club.

After his stint with Swansea, Ayew made a transfer to West Ham for a then-record fee of £20.5 million.

When reflecting on his decision to join Swansea in 2015, Ayew mentioned financial considerations as one of the factors influencing his choice.

“In France, we didn’t really know about Swansea. Some bigger clubs showed interest, but they didn’t play the same style of football. I had a crucial role to play, and the financial aspect also played a part.

For me, it was the perfect decision. And as soon as I arrived, I was recognised as the Premier League’s best player for the month.”

After eight years since his transfer to Swansea, Ayew, now a player for Le Havre in Ligue 1, has been recognized as the Player of the Month for February by his current club.

Laryea Kingston denies allegations regarding Dede Ayew, Asamoah Gyan’s captaincy

Former Ghanaian footballer Laryea Kingston has refuted media claims suggesting that he accused Dede Ayew of using force to seize the captaincy from Asamoah Gyan.

Recent reports had surfaced indicating that Laryea Kingston, while discussing the Black Stars and their future, made a surprising statement.

According to Laryea, he expressed that former captain Asamoah Gyan was discontented due to his treatment and the manner in which the captaincy was transferred to Dede Ayew.

“Look at someone like Asamoah Gyan, Dede Ayew got the captaincy by force so if you are speaking to Asamoah now he is not happy,” he told Graphic Sport.

In a surprising turn of events, Laryea Kingston has refuted the alleged statement, asserting that he harbors no animosity towards the Ayews.

The former Hearts of Oak player clarified that his remarks were merely referencing his own experience of being denied the opportunity to play during the World Cup, despite his contributions to the country’s qualification efforts.

He emphasized that his comments in the interview should not be directly linked to the captaincy dispute between Asamoah Gyan and Dede Ayew.

“I was describing the trauma I went through during the days, I was mistreated for being denied the chance to play in the World Cup, not what has been attributed to me,” Kingston stated.

“I never mentioned the captaincy issue as has been attributed to me.”

However, Ayew’s heroics were not yet complete, as he dramatically salvaged a point for his side with a sensational bicycle kick in the 94th minute.

This memorable performance saw Ayew score his first goal and brace for Le Havre since joining them on a free transfer in 2023.

Ghana’s Black Stars captain, Andre Dede Ayew, has finally opened up about the challenging period following the team’s exit from the 2023 African Cup of Nations (AFCON), expressing remorse and taking responsibility for the disappointing results.

In a video message sighted on social media, the Le Havre player acknowledges the difficulty faced not only by himself but every Ghanaian football fan in the aftermath of the AFCON campaign.

He extended a heartfelt apology for the team’s underwhelming performance, emphasizing the collective responsibility he bears as the captain.

He acknowledges that better results were expected, and as the captain, he takes full responsibility for the on-field outcomes.

“In football, these are things that happen,” Ayew said as he highlighted the transformative power of challenges, adding, “What doesn’t kill you always makes you a stronger person, individually and collectively.”

Despite the disappointments, he expressed unwavering determination, asserting that Ghana, as a footballing nation, will rise again.

In a recent social media post, popular Kumawood comic actor Kwaku Manu has publicly advised Ghanaian football star Dede Ayew to consider retiring from football, citing concerns about the potential impact on the legendary legacy of his father, Abedi Pele.

Expressing worries about Abedi Pele’s esteemed reputation as a former Ghanaian footballer, Kwaku Manu asserted that Dede Ayew’s recent performances have not matched the high standards set by his iconic father.

The award-winning actor highlighted Dede Ayew’s reported struggles on the field, which allegedly led to him being benched in favor of his brother Jordan Ayew during the recent AFCON23 games.

This advice comes in the aftermath of Ghana’s exit from the African Cup of Nations tournament after a disappointing draw with Mozambique, raising concerns about the team’s overall performance and leaving fans disappointed.

While acknowledging Dede Ayew’s past achievements, Kwaku Manu suggested that retiring from football might be a prudent decision to uphold the legacy built by Abedi Pele.

Black Stars captain Andre Ayew has highlighted the formidable nature of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), describing it as an even more demanding competition than the World Cup.

Ayew shared this insight during a farewell dinner on Tuesday night, preceding the 2023 AFCON in Ivory Coast, where President Akufo-Addo encouraged the team to pursue victory despite a 42-year title drought.

They only ‘attack’ us because we can offer more – Abedi Pele addresses trolling of sons

Abed Pele, the legendary African football icon, has expressed that Ghanaians criticize his sons, Dede Ayew and Jordan Ayew, because of their excellence in football.

According to him, the constant criticism arises from the high expectations placed on them due to their exceptional skills, and Ghanaians believe they can deliver even more.

Abedi Pele drew a parallel with his own playing days, noting that he faced similar situations, and emphasized that the criticisms wouldn’t exist if his sons were not outstanding in their football performances.

“They have never got it wrong. What I can say is that they’ve never left me alone. When I was playing it was the same so there is nothing wrong with it. It is because they know you have and you can do it that is why they come at you. If you don’t have it nobody will call your name,” he told Sammy Yeboah.

Andre Dede Ayew and Jordan Ayew continually face criticism, particularly regarding their roles in the Black Stars. Some contend that they have surpassed their prime and should make way for younger players to take the lead.

Consequently, whenever the Black Stars encounter a loss, Dede and Jordan are often the focal points of discussion and critique.

GFA explains sidelining of Dede Ayew from Black Stars squad

Ghana Football Association spokesperson, Henry Asante Twum explained that the Black Stars’ technical team omitted Andre Ayew from their recent squad due to his lack of club affiliation.

Twum stated that the Black Stars’ captain has been engaged in discussions with various clubs regarding a possible transfer.

The technical team reportedly communicated their decision to exclude Ayew, and the player accepted it with a positive outlook.

“…he is not someone you can easily do away with or you can easily replace; however, he has got his future to sort out. At the moment, he is club-less; he is talking to clubs; he is having meetings with clubs; and he travels a lot.

“So the technical team spoke to him to make him understand that they want to excuse him from these two international friendlies so that he can sort out his future.”

“He took it in good fate and gave his blessing to the team as far as the two matches are concerned and the technical team also wished him well as he looks for a new team,” he told Radio Gold Sports.

He stated that despite the captain’s absence, Ayew is still crucial to the team and that his engagement with the Black Stars is not over.

“So there is no problem as if the door is shut on him; it’s not as if the journey is over for him as far as the team is concerned and Andre brings a lot to this team.

“He is a useful part of the jigsaw, he brings experience to the table; he brings his leadership on and off the pitch.

“He provides loads of inspiration to some of these young players in the squad but for now, the coaches feel he should focus on his future, sort out his club issues, and then he will be considered going forward.”

For the October international break, Black Stars head coach Chris Hughton has selected a 23-man squad. After securing two victories in the previous international break, Ghana aims to maintain their momentum as they take on Mexico on October 15 and the USA on October 18, 2023.

Maha Ayew, the mother of Ghanaian national team players Andre Dede Ayew and Jordan Ayew, had to depart from the Education City Stadium during Ghana’s Group H match against South Korea at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Jordan Ayew disclosed that his mother found the intensity of the game overwhelming and decided to leave before the match concluded.

According to the Crystal Palace player, Maha departed sometime between the 65th and 70th minute as she couldn’t bear the nerve-wracking experience of protecting a narrow lead in the final minutes of the game.

“My Mum, after 65 or 70 minutes, she couldn’t watch the game anymore. She had to leave the stadium! We like [the tension] like that, we enjoy it.

It was very stressful for her. She is very passionate about the game as well, so she just couldn’t watch it. With her two sons playing, it was not easy for her,” Ayew disclosed as quoted by Ghanasoccernet.

During the game, Ghana took a two-goal lead in the first before Korea pulled parity in the early minutes of the second half with a strong start.

However, the Black Stars responded and regain the lead and held on this time to record their first and only win of the tournament.

Jordan Ayew’s created the first goal with a beautiful cross, which Mohammed Salisu scored from a rebound. He later put in another sublime cross that was nodded in by Kudus Mohammed for the second.

Carefully manage Dede Ayew’s captaincy transition – Dan Kwaku Yeboah advises

The Black Stars captaincy transition from Andre Ayew to the next player should be managed carefully to prevent a dispute, according to sports broadcaster Dan Kwaku Yeboah.

Kwaku Yeboah gave advise based on earlier Black Stars skipper changes that went poorly and caused player breakdown and the emergence of factions.

He cautioned that if the changeover of the present Black Stars captaincy is not handled properly, it could cause a significant breach on Peace FM.

“Let’s be careful so that Dede’s captaincy transition doesn’t bring us problems,” he said.

While giving historical background to Black Stars captaincy issues he narrated: “Since 1992, every Black Stars transition brings problems. From Kwesi Appiah to Abedi Pele to CK Akonnor because Sammy Kuffour said he doesn’t like it.

“From him, we came to Stephen Appiah from there it came to John Mensah to Asamoah Gyan and it became a whole issue. From Asamoah Gyan to Dede was another controversy.”

Black Stars skipper Andre Ayew, 33, is at the twilight of his career and could end his international career soon.

His obvious successor is current deputy skipper, Thomas Partey who led the team to their 1-0 win over Angola in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Kumasi.

Dede Ayew who was exempted from the matchday squad for the Angola game surprisingly joined the team for warm-up and was an unused substitute.

He later pulled out from the squad ahead of the second leg due to an injury. The Ghana Football Association confirmed that Ayew hurt his knee after the Angola game following a slip down the tunnel.

Ayew, however, took part in the team’s recovery session a day after the win before pulling out of the squad ahead of the trip to Angola for the second leg.

Mohammed Salisu, Alexander Djiku, Dennis Odoi, and Dede Ayew were the players mentioned, along with Andre Ayew, who was mentioned among the injured players, raising concerns about the captain’s unexpected injury.

Charles Taylor has joined the people who believe that there is more to Andre Ayew’s story as he claimed that the Nottingham Forest player was upset for not playing in the first leg at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium hence his decision not to travel for the second leg.

“The injured players who have left the team is good but not entirely because we know what they can do for the team but I’m struggling to believe the excuse for Dede that he is injured because he didn’t even play the game.

I believe there is something there and is not that he is injured.”

“Maybe he was an angle that they didn’t allow him to play the first leg and that is why he has dropped out of the squad.

The medical team has said he is injured but I don’t believe that.

He is angry that he didn’t play and that is why he is not going to Angola,” Charles Taylor said on Angel TV.

He added that Andre Dede Ayew was added to the list of injured players because the technical handlers of the Black Stars wanted to manage the situation.

“Yes, the medical team have said that he is injured but we are in Ghana. They said that because they didn’t want him to receive the backlash from the public.”

  • Benching Dede Ayew was a difficult decision – Chris Hughton

Benching Dede Ayew was a difficult decision – Chris Hughton

Chris Hughton, the coach of the Black Stars, has given an explanation for why captain Andre Dede Ayew was left out Ghana’s starting XI in the game against Angola.

The Black Stars defeated the Palancas Negras of Angola 1-0 on Thursday, March 23, 2023, at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi with captain Andre Dede Ayew sitting on the bench.

After the game, the absence of the Nottingham Forest star dominated the headlines, despite Thomas Partey taking over the captaincy duties and leading the club to victory.

Chris Hughton, who emphasized the captain’s qualities when discussing his decision to bench Andre Ayew at the post-game press conference, said that he made the right choice for the team.

“As a head coach, you have to make difficult decisions. You know the quality that Andre possesses, but you also know the quality of the rest of the squad,” Hughton said.

“Ultimately, it was my choice not to play him, but that doesn’t reflect on his abilities as a player. He remains a valuable member of the team.”

The Black Stars after beating Angola 1-0 are now on top of the Group E table with 7 points ahead of the return leg in Luaanda on Monday, March 27, 2023.

Spanish-based Ghanaian striker, Inaki Williams is also among the players who have touched down in Ghana.

This will be the first time Inaki Williams plays on home soil after switching nationalities from Spain to Ghana. He has so far made 6 appearances for the Black Stars.

In-form Ghanaian winger, Joseph Paintsil has also touched base in Ghana. Paintsil is making his return to the Black Stars squad after being left out of Ghana’s squad for the 2022 FIFA World Cup. The winger has scored 13 goals with 12 assists in 29 appearances at club level.

Defender Joseph Aidoo also arrived at the Black Stars camp on Monday. The Celta Vigo player is among those who have been named to the squad.

  • Dede Ayew misses penalty again, netizens descend him

Dede Ayew misses penalty again, netizens descend him

Ghanaian international football player, Andrew Dede Ayew, has received criticism once more for missing a penalty.

When Nottingham Forest faced Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday, losing 3-1 on aggregate, the Black Stars captain was given the chance to save his team in the final seconds.

The 33-year-old striker, however, blew the chance to increase his team’s goal total and reduce the goal difference.

The striker for Nottingham Forest was reliving his terrifying World Cup 2022 experience.

The Black Stars forward lost a penalty at the crucial stage of the 2022 FIFA World Cup when Ghana clashed with Uruguay in the last group-stage match of the competition.

It was an opportunity presented to the Black Stars and Ghanaians who were looking forward to seeking revenge against their South American rivals.

Uruguay in 2010 denied Ghana victory on her way to making history in South Africa.

On Twitter, many football fans have expressed displeasure with his latest penalty miss with most comments suggesting the sun may have set on the football career of the Black Star skipper.

  • Chris Hughton needs Dede Ayew in his new Black Stars, and this is why

Chris Hughton needs Dede Ayew in his new Black Stars, and this is why

Andre Ayew Dede, the captain of the Black Stars, is undoubtedly in the latter stages of his career, but the Nottingham Forest forward still has a lot to say.

Since making his national team debut in 2007, he has played a significant role. For 16 years and counting, he has had a successful international career.

With 113 appearances and 24 goals so far, Ayew holds the record for the most Ghanaian caps ever.

With eight goals, he holds the record for being Ghana’s top scorer at the AFCON. He has participated in seven editions of the tournament.

Many contend that Ayew has outlived his time with the national team because he has competed in three different World Cup competitions.

However, Andre Ayew appears to have some more to offer with the 2023 AFCON just around the corner.

Here are five reasons why Dede Ayew Andre

    Experience

At age 33, Andre Ayew has literally gone through all the lessons football has to offer a player who played the highest level for this long.

In terms of national team football, Ayew has also gone through the highs and lows and has vast experience in adapting and solving certain situations.

He was the last skipper to lead Ghana to win silverware at the World Stage when the Black Satellites won the FIFA U-20 World Cup in 2009.

He was also present when Ghana came close to winning the AFCON twice, in 2010 and 2015, losing both finals to Egypt and Ivory Coast.

AFCON 2023 might be his last tournament for the Black Stars, therefore, within this period he could be a great guide for the players.

    Made for big occasion

Andre Ayew is built for tournaments as he always pops up in key moments to help the team.

Andre could be counted on in the qualifiers when the going gets tough in during the qualifiers.

    Leader

Andre Ayew has exceptional leadership qualities. He knows how to drive his teammates along and get everyone in their element in games.

He is a good motivator and has exhibited this even before becoming the skipper of the team.

    Proven goal scorer

The current Black Stars, despite having an improved quality, lack a proven goal scorer.

Andre Ayew could be counted on for goals and his tally at the AFCON proves his goal-scoring abilities.

Ayew is a winger who can also play behind the striker. He has scored 24 goals in his international career.

Ghana international, Andre Dede Ayew was in action for Al-Sadd SC on Monday evening when the club faced off with Al Arabi in the Qatar Stars League.

The experienced forward started on the flanks for his club today in a Round 11 encounter of the 2022/23 Qatari top-flight league.

Operating from the right wings, Andre Ayew caused a lot of damage and was a nuisance for the defense of Al Arabi through his stay on the pitch.

In a game that did not see any goal in the first half, Santi Carzola equalised in the 66th minute from 12 yards to give Al-Sadd SC the lead.

Six minutes later, Haasan Al Haydos also equalised with a fine strike to double the lead for the visitors.

At the end of the contest, Al Sadd SC picked the maximum three points to climb to 5th on the Qatar Stars League standings.

In today’s match, Andre Ayew lasted the entire duration of the game against Al Arabi.

This season, the Black Stars captain has made nine appearances for his club and has three goals and one assist to his name.

  • Dede Ayew hangs out with Stonebwoy, Davido

A video of the captain for the Black Stars, Andre Dede Ayew, having a good with two great African musicians – Davido and Stonebwouy – have popped up on social media.

The music stars had a good time at the residence of the Ghanaian footballer who plays for Qatar Stars League club Al Sadd.

On December 17, 2022, Dede Ayew marked his 33rd birthday. He was celebrated by many, especially friends and family. In the video which has gone viral, the two artists are heard wishing Dede Ayew a happy birthday.

  • Why Ghanaians have a love-hate affair with the Ayews

When Andre “Dede” Ayew stepped up in the 21st minute to take the penalty kick against Uruguay at the World Cup in Qatar, he was hoping a successful shot would accomplish two germane issues. The first was to banish the lingering memories of 2010 which are firmly etched in the minds of all who love the game and are old enough to remember. Uruguay forward and universally-acclaimed pantomime villain Luis Suarez had impeded the goal-bound header in Johannesburg, South Africa with his hand. Ghana then missed the resulting penalty that was awarded and have since been condemned to relishing an opportunity to avenge what they feel was a sporting injustice.

If things had gone the way of the West Africans that night, Ghana would have been the first African country to qualify for the semis of a World Cup. That feat has since been chalked by Morocco in Qatar.

But the other box Ayew would have wanted to tick with a goal on December 2nd, 2022 in front of an audience of nearly 40,000 fans, was to put Ghana on the path to the second round of a World Cup as captain of the national team nicknamed the “Black Stars”.

That morning, his father, Abedi “Pele” Ayew had tweeted his support of the national team and spared words of encouragement for Andre and his brother Jordan, another player in the team, exhorting their achievement of playing at the World Cup when he, Abedi, could not.

But Andre’s penalty kick against Uruguay was saved and Ghana went on to lose two goals to nil. The revenge dish they had waited 12 years to serve had apparently been undercooked. What however resembled a consolation for Ghana was the fact that Uruguay had not beaten Ghana by enough goals to make it out of the group stage themselves. Their place was taken by South Korea.

In Ghana, the customary inquisition after a Black Stars defeat was reconvened. It was fairly easy to see who was going to come in for blame. It was none other but the captain who had missed the penalty. The indignation has been an all-consuming fire, swift and merciless, with every diatribe and critique thrown in the way of not only Andre but the entire Ayew household.

Father Ayew has, for instance, been accused of intimidating Ghanaian soccer administrators into calling up his sons for national duties. However, all of this is the latest episode in the enigmatic affair between House Ayew and Ghanaian soccer fans.

Abedi Pele is the most famous Ayew by any stretch of recollection. He was nicknamed Pele after the Brazilian soccer legend due to a similarity in both men’s style of play. Abedi is also the most successful footballer in his family, individually and for Ghana. Regarded as one of Africa’s greatest ever to strut his stuff on a pitch, Abedi was part of the contingent to win Ghana’s last major trophy – the African Cup of Nations in 1982. He was only 18 at the time but the subsequent years were gracious to him, as he went on to star for various top-flight European club teams in France, Germany and Italy over a period of 15 years.

He won the coveted UEFA Champions League – one of only five Ghanaians to do so – with French giants Marseilles in 1993. Now an astute football businessman who owns a football club, Abedi continues to enjoy the respect and admiration of many home and across the world. But for people in his home country, the feeling about the man has not always been positive.

Abedi Ayew with his children, Andre and Jordan.

As part of the pioneering class of young Ghanaian footballers who were taken on by European clubs in the early 90s, Abedi was a recipient of both praise and suspicion by Ghanaian fans. There were many times in his 16-year Ghana career where he was accused of not fully committing to the national cause because he was afraid of incurring injuries that would cost him his place and privilege in a European club. Abedi was not the first and will certainly not be the last African to receive such suspicion from their own people. And as many technical insiders and administrators would tell you, Africans who ply their trade weekly for European clubs can be reluctant to put in a tackle or run a few more yards on national duties because of this fear.

If they are injured playing for their clubs, somehow that mishap was forgivable. Of course, this dynamic was part of a larger anti-African or even racist scheme whereby African soccer players are gently but firmly reminded to be cognizant of who pays the monthly bills. It certainly wasn’t their home countries doing that.

Abedi’s time in the national team was also marked by an infamous rift between himself and another man good enough to make the list of greatest African footballers ever, Tony Yeboah. As the two biggest players in many of Ghana’s national team call-ups in the 90s, Abedi and Yeboah were known to have segmented the team into two factions, maybe unintentionally.

Various former colleagues of the two players have reported that there was palpable tension between Ghana’s two best players. Nii Darko Ankrah, a former Ghana defender who was part of the Black Stars team that played at the Cup of Nations in 1992, said last year that “There were two factions in the Black Stars camp; which is the Kumasi and Accra representations.” While Yeboah was born and bred in Kumasi, Abedi was known to identify with other players who were from Accra, like Ankrah.

Ghana lost the final of the Cup of Nations that year to the Ivory Coast on penalties. And even though Abedi, Ghana’s captain at the time, did not feature because he was suspended for the game, there is a very solid constituency that believes if Yeboah had been handed the captain’s armband for the final, he would have given the game his all. So how is Abedi to blame for another player getting the armband in his absence? It is rumored that he lobbied the coach against Yeboah.

Abedi finished his Ghana stint in 1998 having represented his country on more than 70 occasions, at times, alongside his brother, Kwame Sola Ayew. They were the first brotherly duo to represent Ghana, a situation that has curiously repeated itself thanks again to House Ayew.

In 2010, Ghana called up for the World Cup, Abedi’s three; sons Andre, Jordan and the oldest Rahim. The latter who has had the least memorable Ghana career (only seven games) is Abedi’s first son from an earlier relationship before his marriage to Maha, the mother of Andre and Jordan. Abedi’s clan is not complete without Imani, his only daughter who was at one point a national tennis player for Ghana.

Even after his retirement more than two decades ago, Abedi has appeared to Ghanaians to have an almost insoluble prominence regarding soccer administration in their country. Whether his football team is facing disciplinary action due to allegations of match-fixing or whether he is criticizing the choice of foreign clubs some individual Black Stars players make, Abedi is never really out of the picture.

In 2007, his connection to the Black Stars saw a new phase with the enrolment of his son Andre. That decision was greeted with excitement by those who thought Andre was a teenage prodigy, and with fury by those who thought Andre was rushed into the senior men’s team on the power of nepotism.

Rahim’s short-lived Black Stars career was between 2009 and 2010, while Jordan was first picked in 2010. They have not replicated their father’s success but have probably superseded the drama he was involved with in his days. For instance, the manner in which another controversial former Black Stars player, Asamoah Gyan, lost his captaincy in the team to Andre was an issue that was masticated thoroughly.

Interestingly, neither Jordan nor Andre has been accused of lacking commitment to the national team as their father was. However, the pair are victims of this complete and total commitment in the sense that calls have been increasingly ringing for them to step aside. Their performances have been panned on certain occasions with the meanness of the scorching sun. They are nearly always selected to walk onto the pitch by the myriad of Ghana coaches but fans do not believe the coaches are freely in command. The control of the not-so-invisible Ayew hand is always assumed by millions.

Andre and Jordan’s continuous inclusion in Ghana teams have earned them the rather cynical nickname The Landlords. Such unchallengeable authority they are thought to have.

Andre is now the most capped Ghana player of all time, representing his nation 113 times and scoring more goals than his father as well. As fate would have it, when he came closest to winning a trophy with the Black Stars in 2015, it was The Elephants of the Ivory Coast that would trump Ghana in the final. And just like it happened in 1992 in the days of his father, Ghana were beaten on penalties.

After he missed the penalty against Uruguay, Andre was informed at the end of the game that his daughter was in the hospital because she fainted. She had collapsed due to his misfortune from 12 yards out, it is reported. One can imagine how crushing the feeling was for him – to be fully aware of your hand in your country’s defeat to a sporting nemesis and inadvertently sent your daughter to the hospital. But many people would fancy Andre to come out of tough times because he seems to be made of stern material.

His resilience and his eagerness to protect teammates is not a phenomenon lost on Ghanaians. He has had to speak up at several pre and post-match conferences for his camera-shy brother Jordan. After Ghana beat South Korea in the second group game at Qatar, Andre reminded all who cared to listen that “Jordan has always played well for Ghana” even if some choose to misremember.

Even in defeat, Andre is expected to insist that he gave his all. He and his brother have become accustomed to the backlash and know very well that negativity often reigns supreme when they are in the court of Ghanaian public opinion. Despite all of that, they will hold their heads high, perhaps citing the fact that they beat all those nepotism charges.

They have been good enough to trivialize those accusations. But in football and much of life, you are as good as your last work. Their father, Abedi, more than anyone would know that. He could not win Ghana a trophy as captain of the Black Stars and is also well-remembered for a string of lackluster performances in the latter days of his Ghana career.

Post mortem analyses of the game against Uruguay are still ongoing even at the time of going to press. It’s been ten days since the defeat but the Ayews are not naïve. They know that until they have given enough for which the people can rejoice in the meantime, absolution will not be granted. On to the next match, they’ll say.

  • World Cup: Dede Ayew’s daughter reportedly collapsed after he missed penalty

Reports have it that the daughter of Andre Dede Ayew, the captain of the Black Stars of Ghana, fell unconscious after her father missed a penalty against Uruguay on Friday.

Dede Ayew missed the opportunity to put Ghana in the lead in the first half of the game.

Apparently, the missed penalty had a more adverse effect on his daughter than many Ghanaians who hoped Ghana would beat Uruguay.

According to GTV Sports, Dede Ayew quickly dashed off to the hospital where his daughter had been admitted to after the match ended.

It is said that she is doing fine and not in any danger.

Andre Ayew says the penalty miss against Uruguay in the final Group H game is difficult to accept.

“We had the opportunity to get to the next stage, I missed the penalty. It’s difficult to take’’ Andre Ayew told the media in a post-match interview.

Despite the defeat, Dede Ayew is hopeful of a better Black Stars ahead of future tournaments.

‘’We did not get it right but I am very optimistic for the future.”

“I am sad but we will try and make it better’’ he added.

  • We regret our inability to progress – GFA on Black Stars exit from FIFA World Cup 2022

In response to the disappointing elimination of the Black Stars from the ongoing 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) has issued a statement.

After winning one of their three games, Ghana was eliminated from the Group G tournament.

The Black Stars of Ghana needed at least a draw to advance to the round of 16 after falling to Portugal in their opening match and earning all three points against South Korea.

The team’s final game was against Uruguay, where they were defeated two goals to nil.

The GFA while expressing gratitude to the Ghanaian populace and other groups for their support apologised for the team’s failure to progress out of the group stage.

“The Ghana Football Association is extremely grateful to the government,
the Ghanaian people, the football family, Corporate Ghana, our esteemed sponsors and supporters for their unflinching, unwavering and unalloyed
support during the Black Stars FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 campaign,” part of GFA’s statement read.

“We regret our inability to progress to the knockout phase of the competition and offer our profound apologies to the government, the people of Ghana and all stakeholders across the globe,” the GFA said.

According to the GFA, it has gathered valuable lessons from the team’s qualification and participation in the global showpiece and will communicate further developments in due course.

“We believe that valuable lessons have been learnt from our qualification and participation in the tournament and aim to continue with the positives going into the future.”

“The Ghana Football Association would in due course inform all stakeholders about any further developments concerning the Black Stars,” the statement added.

Meanwhile, Head Coach of the Black Stars, Otto Addo, has announced his decision to resign from the position.

“Me & my family are happy in Germany. I said I would step down after the World Cup even if we’re world champions after the tournament. I’ve resigned from my role as Ghana coach,” Otto Addo told the press in his post-match interview.

  • World Cup: The captain shouldn’t have played the penalty – Stonebwoy

Reggae dancehall artiste, Stonebwoy, says Captain Andre Dede Ayew should not have been made to take the penalty Ghana secured against Uruguay.

According to him, an oracle revealed that the Black Stars captain was not to play a penalty to ensure what happened 12 years ago did not repeat itself.

In 2010, Ghana and Uruguay faced each other in the World Cup tournament held in South Africa. Ghana lost because Asamoah Gyan, who was not yet the captain of the team, missed a penalty.

In a tweet, Stonebwoy revealed that “12 years ago, the captain should have played the penalty. Today, the captain shouldn’t have played the penalty.”

In 2010, Stephen Appiah was the captain of the senior national team.

Dede Ayew’s missed penalty has pained the musician and many Ghanaians who expected a lot from the Black Stars.

    “This one hurt,” Stonebwoy wrote.

  • 2022 World Cup: Portugal narrowly beats Ghana

Ghana wished for victory in its game against Portugal at the 2022 World Cup tournament, but if wishes were horses, beggars would ride.

Portugal gained dominance briefly after Black Stars captain Andre Dede Ayew scored an equalizer.

Dede Ayew cancelled out Ronaldo’s 64th goal at the 73rd minute.

But his efforts were put to waste after Portugal added two more goals in less than 10 minutes after the equalizer.

    J. Felix scored at the 78th minute not long after Dede Ayew was substituted. Dede could not believe his eyes.

Shock engulfed his entire being when Leao added a third for Portugal at the 80th minute.

But hope emerged from the shadows for Ghana after Bukari scored at the 89th minute.

However, Ghana was unable to cancel out Portugal’s goals.

Ghana will later face Uruguay and South Korea in Group H.

Dede received an assist from Mohammed Kudus to score a goal for Ghana.

Ahead of this, some Twitter users criticised him for his ill performance during the first half of the game.

  • The Ayew brothers – What do they have to offer?

Two of the three sons—Andre Dede Ayew and Jordan Ayew—of one of the greatest players to have ever represented Ghana’s Black Stars, the maestro Abedi Ayew, seem to consistently incite conflict among Ghanaians whenever the Black Stars are involved in a match.

Some fans contend that they no longer play well enough to merit call-ups. These calls ought to go to fresh faces who are more capable and ready to compete. Others believe that since they are two of our most crucial players, their call-ups are merited.

There shouldn’t, in my opinion, be such a significant rift over the brothers’ selection for Ghana’s World Cup team. I’ll explain why.

    Dede Ayew

The older of the two, Dede Ayew, made his international debut for Ghana in 2007 while still a teenager. He has now progressed to captain the Black stars. He has 109 caps and has scored 23 goals for his country. Nobody embodies commitment and passion more than Dede Ayew, the team’s current captain.

He is constantly willing to put in a lot of effort and sweat to ensure the success of the nation. A player’s call-up to his national team is always an honor, and Dede always gives his best effort when he receives that call-up. His leadership skills and drive to inspire his teammates to step up their game when they are struggling are excellent qualities to have on the team.

Many spectators mock him and label him “choirmaster” for his clapping and hand motions on the field, failing to recognize the psychological impact it may have on the players. As team captain, he also serves as the coach’s mouthpiece. When a player makes a mistake that costs the team a goal or wastes a significant scoring opportunity, he serves as the initial source of encouragement for the players.

Earning over 100 caps for Ghana is no small feat. He has played in two FIFA World Cups (2010 and 2014), as well as seven Africa Cup of Nations (2008, 2010, 2012, 2015, 2017, 2019, and 2021), helping them finish runners-up in 2010 and 2015, and was top goalscorer at the latter tournament.

This demonstrates the caliber of player he is and the range of experience he brings to the team. No other squad member has this much international tournament experience. Dede Ayew has played for teams who have won championships and teams that have faced relegation throughout his club career.

He worked hard for victory in relegation battles and scored several crucial goals when it mattered most. Although the Black Stars group includes opponents like Portugal, Uruguay, and South Korea, it is never impossible. He is a very good option off the bench when the stars are chasing the game, even if he is not named in the starting 11. His heading ability is very underrated. He can move well off the ball to attack the proper gaps for crosses and even tower over larger, taller defenders to score goals.

    Jordan Ayew

The youngest of the three Ayew brothers, Jordan, made his senior debut for Ghana in a 2010 victory against Swaziland in an AFCON Qualification match. Since then, he has consistently played for the national side. He has 83 total caps for the Black Stars and has scored 19 goals, 4 less than his brother Dede. Jordan is a dependable player for Crystal Palace at the club level, starting 10 games and substituting in the other 3 this season.

This demonstrates his level of involvement. He plays a very tactical role in assisting players like Wilfried Zaha to succeed, as can be shown by looking at some of his games this season. When Jordan Ayew is played on the right wing, Zaha remains high and wide as the danger on the counterattack, therefore giving Jordan greater defensive responsibilities. When Palace decides to defend in a mid or low block, Jordan tucks into midfield as needed. He is a crucial member of Patrick Viera’s team thanks to his tactical prowess.

Jordan can be utilized similarly or more offensively for the national team because he can also play as a striker. When switching plays or struggling to build out of defense, his holdup play might make him a viable target for long balls. There is no truth to the many Ghanaians’ complaints that he is sluggish and lazy.

He is among the most diligent forwards you will come across. His dedication and perseverance make him a very special profile to have in front of the press. Whatever your personal opinion of the brothers may be, if they are not called up, their very specific profiles will be missed.

With so many new players on the team, Andre Dede Ayew’s leadership, wisdom, and passion are desperately needed. Players who have participated in international competitions before and have excelled should absolutely be included because more than half of the players will be making their debuts there.

Jordan Ayew also possesses the tactical adaptability to enable the coach to make specific tactical modifications throughout a game as needed.

All in all, you don’t just get rid of your captain, your most experienced players, and two of your top scorers when heading into a tournament. It is essential to gradually replace older players who aren’t providing their best while giving new players time and encouragement to step into those large shoes as the team continues to establish a solid foundation for the years to come. New and young players are frequently overwhelmed by too much pressure.

To sum up, the Ayew brothers always play with passion for the Black Stars because they love their country. Whatever the opinions of the supporters, if they are not included in the squad, they will be missed during the world cup.
