  • Homosexuality case against 47 Nigerian men delayed again

    A Nigerian judge has again adjourned the case against 47 Nigerian men accused of “public displays of same-sex affection” after the lead witness for the prosecution failed to appear in court.

    In Wednesday’s proceedings, Justice Rilwan Aikawa appeared annoyed that the prosecution was again unable to proceed, the BBC’s Mayeni Jones reports from Nigeria.

    The case has been adjourned at least three times because of procedural issues, Reuters news agency reports.

    The judge warned the prosecution that at the next sitting he would dismiss the case if it was not able to proceed.

    The suspects were arrested in an August 2018 police raid on a Lagos hotel. They face a 10-year jail term if convicted, Reuters reports.

  • 20-year-old unemployed remanded for defilement

    A Cape Coast Circuit Court has remanded a 20- year-old unemployed man, Abraham Mensah into Police custody for allegedly defiling an 11-year-old girl.

    He pleaded not guilty to the charge of defilement and the Court, presided over by Miss Dorinda Arthur Smith adjourned the case to Thursday, October 24, 2019.

    Sergeant Francisca Nyarko, who prosecuted, told the Court that the complainant is the mother of the victim and lived in the same vicinity with Abraham at Nkanfoa, a suburb of Cape Coast.

    She said on Saturday August 31, 2019, at about 01140 hours, Abraham and his accomplice informed the victim that her brother, one Simon was looking for at their house and she followed them to their house and she was shown the room where her brother was said to be, but when she tried entering the room, Abraham quickly pushed her from behind and locked the door.

    His accomplice who is at large took a bottle of akpeteshie bitters and forced it down the throat of the victim in the presence of Abraham and she became unconscious after taking the alcoholic drink.

    Sergeant Nyarko said on the same day, complainant had information that the victim was unconscious in Abraham’s room and sent the girl’s elder sister to check up on her and she found Abraham sitting on the mat close to the victim while she lay unconscious.

    Disabled evangelist jailed 10 years for defilement

    The incident was reported to the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) and Abraham was arrested and a medical report form was issued to the victim for medical attention.

  • Man, 26, jailed 15 years for defiling his 12-year-old stepdaughter

    Daniel Owusu, a 26-old-year chain-saw operator who defiled his 12-year-old stepdaughter has been sentenced to 15 years imprisonment in hard labour by the Cape Coast Circuit Court. Owusu, a native of Twifo Adjetey Camp in the Twifo Atimokwa District of the Central Region pleaded guilty to the charge of defilement and was sentenced on his own plea.

    Sergeant Iddrisu Yakubu, who prosecuted, told the Court presided over by Mrs Dorinda Arthur Smith that the complainant is the father of the victim and lived in the same vicinity with Owusu at Twifo Adjetey Camp.

    Narrating the fact of the case, Sergeant Yamubu said Owusu had been living in the same room with the victim and his wife for about one year.

    He said during the month of August 2019, the victim’s mother travelled leaving her and two other siblings in the care of Owusu.

    Owusu, the Prosecutor said, made advances at the victim to have sexual intercourse with him but she refused.

    He said on Monday, August 12, 2019, at about 1100 hours, while the victim was in their room, Owusu entered the room, locked the door, held her two hands and forcefully had sexual intercourse with her.

    Her loud screams for help could not deter Owusu who satisfied himself and later warned her not to disclose it to anyone or she will die.

    The girl kept her ordeal a secret for the fear of losing her life.

    Sergeant Yakubu said Owusu took advantage and continued having sexual intercourse with the victim until Friday, August 30, 2019, when she narrated her ordeal to her father.

    The case was reported to the District Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) at Twifo Praso and Owusu was arrested.

    The victim was issued with a Police Medical Report form to attend hospital for examination and treatment.

    He said the report of the medical examination indicated that the girl had been defiled.
