Dr Bawumia’s speaking style: What it reveals about political communication – The microphone matters

Politics is not only about policy. It is performance. It is tone, timing, posture, and presence. It is the quiet language of gestures and the subtle choreography between a speaker and the microphone in their hand.

In modern politics, where every speech is clipped, replayed, memed, and dissected, non-verbal communication is no longer background noise. It is the message.

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Ghana’s former Vice President and flagbearer of the NPP, is widely recognized for his data-driven rhetoric and economic arguments. His speeches often lean heavily on statistics, structure, and analytical framing.

Yet beyond the substance lies a stylistic detail that has sparked discussion among communication observers: his tendency, at times, to hold the microphone very close to his mouth.

This may appear minor. It is not. In high-stakes political communication, the smallest physical choices can shape perception in outsized ways.

Why Microphone Technique Matters in Politics

A microphone is not merely an amplification device. It is a psychological bridge between leader and listener.

Research in communication theory consistently shows that audiences assess credibility not just through content, but through delivery, vocal modulation, facial expression, posture, and control of space. In political psychology, these non-verbal signals contribute to perceptions of competence, dominance, warmth, and authority.

When a speaker holds a microphone extremely close to the mouth, several things happen: the sound becomes more intimate and sometimes compressed. Breathing and plosive sounds (like “p” and “b”) become more pronounced.

The visual frame narrows, with the face partially obscured by the microphone. Gestural freedom is reduced if one hand is fixed in a rigid position. These are technical factors, but they ripple outward into perception. For a presidential candidate, perception is currency.

    Audience Perception: Intensity or Tension?

Holding a microphone very close to the mouth can project intensity. It may suggest focus, urgency, or seriousness, particularly in rally-style environments where emotional appeal is central.

However, in more formal settings—policy forums, international stages, and presidential debates—the same posture can unintentionally convey tension or guardedness. It visually shrinks the communicative space. Instead of an expansive leader addressing a nation, the image becomes tighter, more compressed.

Leadership communication, globally, tends to favour openness. Barack Obama often allowed space between the microphone and mouth, maintaining visible facial expression and relaxed jaw movement.

Angela Merkel, known for precision, typically used podium microphones, minimising hand interference. Even leaders who prefer handheld microphones, such as Emmanuel Macron in town-hall settings, maintain moderate distance, preserving vocal clarity and facial openness.

The visual metaphor matters. Distance from the microphone signals comfort. Comfort signals control. Control signals authority.

Professional broadcast standards, whether in political speeches or media interviews, typically recommend holding a handheld microphone approximately 5 to 10 centimeters from the mouth, angled slightly to avoid direct airflow. This reduces distortion and preserves tonal balance.

Dr. Bawumia is known for a measured speaking pace and structured argumentation. His voice, naturally steady and composed, benefits from clarity. When microphone proximity compresses that clarity, it risks undermining the precision of his message, particularly when presenting economic data that requires sharp articulation.

In political communication, clarity is credibility. A candidate emphasizing economic competence must ensure that technical delivery matches intellectual rigor. Even minor distortion can subconsciously erode perceived polish.

Confidence and Authority: Body Language Signals

Confidence in leadership is communicated as much through posture as through policy. A relaxed arm, an open palm, controlled pacing across a stage—these project mastery of space.

When a microphone is held very close and tightly, it can restrict gestural range. The speaker’s upper body may appear constrained, reducing visual dynamism. When the microphone obscures part of the face or limits gestural flow, visual authority may diminish subtly. Not dramatically, but perceptibly.

This is not about flaw. It is about optimization. At the presidential level, communication is performance art backed by strategy. Every detail matters.

The Presidential Image: Optics in a Digital Age

In today’s media environment, speeches are consumed less as live experiences and more as short video clips on smartphones. That means camera framing amplifies micro-details.

If a microphone consistently dominates the lower half of the face in photographs or clips, it affects brand imagery. Presidential branding requires visual consistency, composure, and statesmanship.

Globally, presidential hopefuls often rely more heavily on podium-mounted or lapel microphones during formal addresses. These free the hands, maintain facial visibility, and project institutional gravitas. Handheld microphones are common in rallies or community engagements, but even there, the most seasoned leaders modulate proximity to maintain vocal quality and visual balance.

Political branding operates on repetition. If a certain posture becomes recurrent, it becomes part of the brand—intentionally or not. The question, then, is strategic: Does the microphone technique reinforce the image of a calm, presidential technocrat? Or does it introduce subtle visual tension inconsistent with that brand? Communication excellence is often about refinement, not reinvention.

The Broader Lesson: Presentation Shapes Political Memory

Voters rarely remember entire speeches. They remember impressions. They remember whether a candidate seemed calm or tense, open or guarded, commanding or restrained. These impressions are formed in seconds, often before a single statistic is processed.

Political communication is, at its highest level, brand architecture. Substance builds the foundation. Style constructs the façade. Both must align.

Dr. Bawumia’s strength lies in structured, data-informed argumentation. Refining microphone technique—ensuring clarity, openness, and relaxed authority—would not change his message. It would amplify it. In a presidential race, amplification is everything.

The microphone is small, but symbolic. It represents the bridge between leader and nation. How it is held, how it frames the face, how it shapes the voice—these are not cosmetic concerns. They are strategic elements of political branding.

Critiquing microphone technique is not trivial nitpicking. It is recognition that in contemporary politics, every gesture communicates. For any presidential contender anywhere in the world, the path to commanding trust runs through disciplined communication. Vocal clarity strengthens authority. Open posture enhances confidence. Professional presentation reinforces institutional readiness.

In the end, politics is persuasion. And persuasion is as much about how something is said as what is said. The microphone, then, is not just equipment. It is image. It is presence. It is power.

  • 2026 NPP Flagbearer race: Dr Bawumia leads Ken Agyapong in Nyhiaeso constituency

2026 NPP Flagbearer race: Dr Bawumia leads Ken Agyapong in Nyhiaeso constituency

Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has led the former Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong, in the number of votes cast by delegates in Nhyiaeso during the just-ended New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential primary.

The NPP’s internal election conducted is to select a candidate to represent the party in the 2028 general elections . As such, party supporters and observers have been spotted at designated polling centers awaiting the outcome of the tightly contested primaries.

More than 300 polling centres nationwide were set up for the presidential primaries with over 211,000 delegates participating in the expected to vote.

Speaking to the media,  Member of Parliament (MP) for the area, Dr Stephen Amoah has expressed shock over the development. According to Stephen Amoah, he expected Mr Agyapong to earn a comfortable victory, due to the investments made by his campaign team.

“It’s very surprising because I thought Kennedy was going to win by 60%,” Dr Amoah said.

The lawmaker said the strong presence and intensive campaign activities of the Ken Campaign in the area had created expectations of a different result, adding that the outcome fell short of what many people on the ground had predicted.

Meanwhile, the Executive Director of Global InfoAnalytics, Mussa Dankwah has predicted Former Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, to win 14 out of the 16 regions.

Speaking to the media on Wednesday, January 28, he noted that Dr. Bawumia would sweep massive votes in the party’s stronghold, the Ashanti Region.

He added, “Yes, [Bawumia will win in 14 regions out of 16 regions].“All the areas we have looked at are pointing in one direction, and that direction is that Bawumia will win this Saturday’s election one-touch.

According to him, “Based on our model, his lowest score will be 54 percent, which is the 57 percent we are giving him minus the three percent margin of error, or he could get up to 60 percent”.The Executive Director of Global InfoAnalytics emphasised that the data is consistent across all regions. “I am very confident in Bawumia’s numbers because they are more stable in terms of variability. There is no noise in the data,” he added.

Last year, the National Tracking Poll by Global InfoAnalytics disclosed that 56 per cent of voters and 72 per cent of committed NPP delegates want former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia as their flagbearer for the 2028 general elections.

According to the poll, 28 per cent of voters are rooting for former Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong, with 6 per cent each for Dr Bryan Acheampong and Dr Yaw Osei-Adutwum, and 4 per cent supporting Kwabena Agyapong.

Among NPP delegates, 19 per cent want Kennedy Agyapong, while Dr Bryan Acheampong records 4 per cent, Dr Osei-Adutwum 3 per cent, and Kwabena Agyapong 1 per cent.

The poll was conducted between December 1 and December 21 across all 16 regions of the country. Methods used include a combination of web-based, telephone, and face-to-face interviews.

In October 2025, the Pan-African civil society organisation Sanity Africa, which predicted the victory of Bernard Baidoo of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the tightly contested Akwatia by-election, released its Phase Two survey on the NPP presidential primaries.

According to the organisation’s survey, there has been a shift in the landscape as the party gears up towards the January 2026 primaries.

The abridged October report suggests that Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, popularly known as Ken, has strengthened his lead among NPP delegates, commanding 53.1% of voting intentions, representing a 1.7 percentage-point increase from the Phase One survey conducted in July.

Dr Mahamudu Bawumia (DMB) trails with 39.0%, indicating a 3.2-point drop. Behind them are Dr Bryan Acheampong at 5.0% (up 1.9 points), Dr Yaw Osei-Adutwum at 2.0% (down 1.0 point), and Ing. Kwabena A. Agyepong at 0.9% (rising from 0.3%).

The survey, carried out between July and October 2025, sampled 15,000 delegates from an estimated 218,000 in the expanded voter album across all 276 constituencies.

It boasts a 99% confidence level with a ±5% margin of error. At the regional level, Ken Agyapong sits atop as the leading candidate in 10 out of Ghana’s 16 regions, including strongholds such as Ashanti (54.8%), Central (69.0%), and Eastern (54.8%).

His biggest contender, Dr Bawumia, on the other hand, still holds his lead in the northern sector, with an advantage in the remaining six regions. He leads in the North East (70.0%) and Upper West (60.2%). Competitive races are unfolding in Bono East, Savannah, and Upper East, where margins remain slim.

Notable shifts include Dr Bawumia widening his lead in the North East Region from 51.6% to 70.0%, while Ken strengthened his position in Volta (50.8%) and Bono (53.0%).

Dr Bryan Acheampong registered significant gains in his home region of Eastern, rising to 21.7%. Sanity Africa noted that these shifts reflect evolving delegate sentiments influenced by campaign strategies and regional dynamics.

The organisation emphasised that while Ken Agyapong currently has the upper hand, the contest remains fluid. Endorsements, messaging, and campaign strategies, it said, are expected to play critical roles in shaping the outcome.

With Phase Three of the survey scheduled for release in January 2026, Sanity Africa concluded that Ken may be the one to beat, but the race is far from over.

However, the Global InfoAnalytics tracking poll named Dr Mahamudu Bawumia as the people’s preferred candidate to lead the NPP into the 2028 general election, ahead of his closest contender, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong.

The poll suggests that 57% of voters prefer Dr Bawumia as the party’s presidential candidate, while 29% picked Kennedy Ohene Agyapong.

The other contenders—former Minister of Education Dr Yaw Osei-Adutwum (6%), Minister of Food and Agriculture Dr Bryan Acheampong (5%), and former NPP General Secretary Kwabena Agyapong (3%)—trailed behind.

In the critical swing regions of Greater Accra, Central, and Western, Dr Bawumia also led decisively with 57%, followed by Kennedy Agyapong at 32%. Dr Adutwum and Dr Acheampong each secured 4%, while Kwabena Agyapong obtained 3%.

The survey further indicated that in a potential runoff between Dr Bawumia and Kennedy Agyapong, Dr Bawumia would extend his lead with 62% against Agyapong’s 38%.

  • Expulsion threats won’t force me out; I’m not leaving – Prof Frimpong to NPP

Expulsion threats won’t force me out; I’m not leaving – Prof Frimpong to NPP

Ghana’s former Minister of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, and stalwart New Patriotic Party (NPP), Professor Kwabena Frimpong, has hit back at the party following its announcement of an impending expulsion of the cardiothoracic surgeon for alleging the 2023 primaries were rigged in favour of Dr Bawumia, calling the party fake during an interview on The Point of View with Bernard Avle on Channel One TV yesterday, Monday, 12th January.

Speaking during an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosiisen on Tuesday, January 13, the former Minister reiterated his remarks in a defiant response that he will not leave.

This was after he was asked if he would save himself the embarrassment of being forced out by preemptively resigning.

However, he said, “No! I’m not leaving the party; they should leave the party [because] they are the fake ones,” he declared. “They should go away, and the true party will stand.”

He then went on to call his imminent invitation by the party’s NEC in an attempt for him to defend himself against the penalties of his actions as one that will be a waste of his time, hence he will decline.

“I will not honour any invitation from the NEC to waste my time,” he added.

He argued that the party is currently in a state of terminal decline that can only be reversed by a complete purge of the “fake” elements at the top.

“We must accept that the NPP is destroyed; this was not how the party was in years past,” he lamented. “They should exit so that the young men and women with love for the party will rebuild.”

Meanwhile, not only did the Professor make accusations against the party, but also suggested that the selection of the former vice President, Dr Bawumia, as flagbearer for the party will be a shipwreck.

NPP’s response to the Prof’s claims

In reaction to this, NPP, in a statement signed by its General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, denied and described the Professor’s remarks as “baseless and unsubstantiated allegations”, noting that the results duly reflect the will of both the party and its delegates.

The statement said, “The Party unequivocally rejects Professor Frimpong Boateng’s unfortunate characterisation of the NPP and firmly denies his baseless and unsubstantiated allegations regarding the conduct of the 2023 Presidential Primary.”

It further described Prof. Frimpong-Boateng’s comments and conduct as highly reprehensible and damaging to the unity, values, and integrity of the party.

Consequently, the statement said the party has invoked the relevant provisions of its constitution to commence the necessary processes to expel him, stressing that all steps will be carried out strictly in accordance with due process.

“The said primary has been widely acknowledged by all candidates who participated, as well as by well-meaning members of the Party, as having been conducted in a free, fair, transparent, and credible manner, faithfully reflecting the will of Party Delegates,” parts of the statement read.

It went on to further condemn the views and conduct of Professor Frimpong, saying, “the New Patriotic Party views the conduct and utterances of Professor Kwabena Frimpong Boateng as highly reprehensible and inimical to the values, unity, and integrity of the Party.”

Meanwhile, Professor Frimpong isn’t the only party member who has been suspended in the last decade.

In 2015, the then National Chairman, Paul Afoko was suspended for allegedly undermining Nana Akufo-Addo’s leadership, showing arrogance, and defying party elders.

Sammy Crabbe, who was then the vice to Paul Afoko, was suspended for openly defying party decisions, refusing to appear before the disciplinary committee, and supporting Afoko against NEC directives.

In the same year, NPP also suspended Kwabena Agyapong, the then General Secretary, for gross misconduct, disrespect, and conspiring with Afoko to act against party orders.

    NPP Amnesty for suspended members

Last year, members of the NPP who were suspended were reinstated, and all charges against those who were facing the disciplinary committee were dropped, the party announced.

The decision was taken by the National Council during an emergency meeting held on July 25.

In a statement dated August 16 and signed by the Acting National Chairman of the Party, Mr. Danquah Smith Buttey, the party informed members that, as part of measures to ensure unity and cooperation, all those who were banned from the party had been given the right to return.

“This measure reflects the Party’s unwavering commitment to fostering internal cohesion, strengthening solidarity, and preparing collectively for the political tasks ahead.”

“I write to inform you that the National Council, at its emergency meeting held on Friday, July 25, 2025, resolved, in the interest of unity and reconciliation, to grant a General Amnesty to all Party members who have been suspended or whose disciplinary cases are currently pending before the appropriate disciplinary bodies,” parts of the statement read.

In light of this, it urged all concerned bodies, i.e., the Regional Executive Committee and the Constituency Executive Committee, to duly reinstate all suspended members in accordance with laid-down rules and guiding principles to that effect.

“We hereby serve notice that this directive lifts all such suspensions and nullifies any ongoing proceedings against affected members,” it continued.

However, the party explained that this recall does not cover members who wilfully forfeited their membership. In any case where such members desire to return, they are expected to submit a formal reinstatement request to the party’s secretariat.

Following their acceptance, a two-year ban shall be placed on them from contesting in any internal elections.

  • You inherited a solid foundation, don’t let it slip – Bawumia to Pres Mahama

You inherited a solid foundation, don’t let it slip – Bawumia to Pres Mahama

Former Vice President of Ghana and flagbearer aspirant of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has shared a New Year message which includes some wake-up calls for the incumbent president, John Dramani Mahama.

In his message shared on January 1, 2026, on his official social media platforms (Facebook and X), he noted that his government, which was led by the former President Akufo-Addo, handed over a solid foundation to the Mahama-led administration, hence the need to build on it and “not let it slip”

He said, “The foundation President Mahama inherited was solid in many ways. It is imperative that we build on it and not let it slip. I say this because this matters more now than ever.”

He highlighted several other national issues, including the need to uphold the country’s democracy and called on President Mahama to deliver on his promise to the Ghanaian youth as far as employment and his flagship programme, the 24-hour economy, are concerned.

According to him, the mandate the president has earned was given to him by the good people of Ghana to promote livelihoods and ensure safety and growth, hence the need for President Mahama to guard it jealously and deliver to the utmost satisfaction of the people.

He said, “A lot has happened since 7th December 2024, and I know many of us continue to reflect on it every day. I congratulate President John Dramani Mahama on his first year in office, and I sincerely wish him well in the discharge of his mandate. The Ghanaian people have bestowed a sacred trust on him, and he cannot afford to fail them. I therefore urge him to continue to guard the peace, stability, and unity of our nation jealously. Ghana has always stood out as a beacon in a region that has seen too much turmoil and instability.”

He went on to address the plight of some citizens over the last year, labelling it as a challenging one for some, particularly for youth and parents. Consequently, he urged President Mahama to fulfil his promise of providing jobs to the youth populace through the 24-hour economy.

The NDC government’s proposed “24‑Hour Economy” is designed to expand economic activity beyond the traditional 8 a.m.–5 p.m. workday, to create millions of jobs and improve wages. It’s aimed at transforming Ghana’s labour market by creating 1.7 million employment opportunities and improving wages.

The former vice president noted, “A new year gives us a pause, a moment to reflect on where we are coming from, the choices we have made, and the future we still hope to build together with quiet thought and renewed resolve. I know that for many Ghanaians, the past year has not been easy. Parents have worried about providing for their families, and unemployed young people have wondered when the 24-hour economy will provide the promised jobs.”

A major highlight in the presidential aspirant’s message was his concern about the country’s rank in terms of peace. Referring to the way the dismissal of the former Chief Justice Gertrude Torkonoo was handled, Dr Bawumia stated that Ghana, which has maintained a reputation as a beacon of democracy and peace, has now fallen six places in the 2025 Global Peace Index, a drop he labels as “gaping cracks.”

“You may have heard about the results of the 2025 Global Peace Index. Ghana has dropped six places to 61st in the world, and from fourth to seventh in sub-Saharan Africa. These results point to growing security worries and pockets of unrest in the country. One of Ghana’s greatest strengths since the inception of the Fourth Republic has been the independence and credibility of our democratic institutions. The world looks at us and says, ‘This is how democracy should work.’ But in the course of the year, we have seen gaping cracks appearing.

“For example, the manner in which Ghana’s third female Chief Justice was hounded out of office in fulfilment of a campaign pledge hurt many of us who believe in the independence of the judiciary. Let me stress unequivocally that when institutions are weakened, democracy is weakened. When institutions are politicised, trust is lost. Ghana’s democracy must never be sacrificed on the altar of short-term political advantage. There can be no turning back for our nation,” Dr Bawumia continued.

He continued, “Many Ghanaians have expressed concern about the direction of our national cohesion and the strength of our democratic institutions. These concerns should not be dismissed. When citizens begin to worry about fairness, independence, and consistency, confidence is affected. And when confidence is shaken, progress becomes harder.”

In light of these setbacks, Dr Bawumia stated, “I therefore respectfully advise President Mahama to focus on strengthening, not undermining, the institutions that underpin our democratic order.”

The NPP presidential aspirant, who also happens to be the forerunner in the race, charge dhis party members to embrace unity as they gear up for the next elections. He acknowledged the different opinions that will be shared by various individuals; however, he urged that they should all focus on achieving a particular goal and purpose.

On his part, the goal should be to choose a leader who prioritises integrity, selfless service and not a cronyist.

“To my brothers and sisters in the New Patriotic Party, this is a defining moment in our journey. Ours is a party founded on the principles of freedom, justice, and opportunities for all. These ideals demand more than slogans. They demand unity, discipline, and leadership rooted in selfless service and unquestionable character.

As a family, we may differ in opinions, but we must never differ in purpose. Division weakens us; unity strengthens us. And history will judge us not by how loudly we speak, but by how wisely we choose. This new year calls on us to rally together and to select a leader of integrity, dedication, and a genuine spirit of service, someone who understands that leadership is not about privilege, but about responsibility. It’s not about a few people prospering, but about every Ghanaian having a fair chance to succeed,” he added.

  • I’m here to serve and not to amass personal wealth – Dr Bawumia

I’m here to serve and not to amass personal wealth – Dr Bawumia

Former Vice President and flagbearer hopeful of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has reaffirmed that his commitment to serving the country is the motive behind his pursuit of the flagbearership, and not a desire to amass wealth for himself.

The Party is set to host its presidential primaries in January 2026; hence, ahead of that, the former Vice President, as part of his campaign, embarked on a four-day campaign tour in the Western Region, visiting the Amenfi East, Amenfi West, and Amenfi Central Constituencies.

In an address to some party faithfuls in the constituency, Dr Bawumia emphasised that his record in public service demonstrates his commitment to integrity, efficiency, and the prudent use of national resources.

Taunting his competence in managing finances and cutting waste, the former vice president referred to the time when the Mobile Money Interoperability project was first initiated, the NDC had proposed a contract worth 1.2 billion dollars, highlighting how his outfit delivered excellently on the same project at just less than half of the proposed budget presented by the then National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Dr Mahamudu Bawumia stated, “Let me remind you that when we initiated the Mobile Money Interoperability project, the NDC had proposed a contract worth 1.2 billion dollars. We cancelled that deal and instead completed the entire project for just 4.5 million dollars.”

This initiative, he taunted ,has greatly benefited Ghanaians and created thousands of jobs. Dr Bawumia said his satisfaction comes from seeing how the initiatives have positively impacted lives across the country. The former Vice President urged delegates in Amenfi West and across Ghana to support his bid to lead the NPP in 2028.

Meanwhile, Dr Bawumia picked the third spot on the party’s ballot as part of the aspirants for the flagbearership position of the party.

The exercise conducted on Friday, October 10, was to determine who takes which number on the ballot paper ahead of the presidential election on January 31, 2026.

So far, Kwabena Agyepong, former Vice President and 2024 Presidential Candidate, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, former MP for Assin Central, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, former Minister of Education, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, and former Minister of Food and Agriculture, Dr Bryan Acheampong, have been cleared to campaign.

Former MP for Assin Central picked the first spot, and Dr Bryan Acheampong picked the second position, and Dr Mahamudu Bawumia took the third position. Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum and Kwabena Agyepong the fourth and fifth positions, respectively. Former General Secretary of the NPP, Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, officially filed his nomination forms on Tuesday, August 26.

Party executives received the nomination forms from former Assin Central MP and presidential hopeful Kennedy Ohene Agyapong on Wednesday, August 27. Former Food and Agriculture Minister Bryan Acheampong has also filed his nomination forms.

In the meantime, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has received strong backing from 268 former Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs), who paid him a visit in June to pledge their support.

Former Energy Minister and running mate of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) 2024 presidential candidate, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, has decided to throw his weight behind Dr Mahamudu Bawumia ahead of the party’s presidential primaries in 2026.

In an interview on Asempa FM on August 26, the former minister noted that he remains grateful to the former Vice President, who decided to make him his running mate despite the many individuals who advised him to do otherwise.

According to Dr Opoku Prempeh, popularly known as Napo, Dr Bawumia was engaged countless times by some bigwigs in the party to pick someone else to be his running mate.“I am not ungrateful. Look at this big party and all the people who were praying for the running mate slot; he ignored all of them and made me his running mate.”

“I know it was a difficult situation, but a lot of people don’t know. Some bigwigs in the party went to Dr Bawumia to tell him not to make me the running mate, but he ignored them. There are some names that, if I mentioned them, you would be shocked. Some even took him to offices to advise him against me, but still he chose me,” he remarked.

He thus said, “So, I cannot be ungrateful to him… For those who stood in the flagbearership contest, everyone knows Kennedy Agyapong is my friend, but I am still for Bawumia.”

Late last week, Asante Akim South Member of Parliament, Hon. Kwaku Asante Boateng, speaking during an interview with Adom TV in late October, described the NPP presidential aspirant and former Vice President Dr Bawumia as an “alien” and “a stranger” within the NPP during a live interview on Adom TV in late October 2025.

He noted that the former Vice President’s candidacy is causing rifts in the party. In response to this, the party has issued a statement dated November 1 and signed by the party’s General Secretary, Justin Kodua, dissociating itself from the MP’s remarks, highlighting its commitment to “inclusivity, equality, and national cohesion”.

The statement read, “The National Secretariat of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has noted with concern certain comments attributed to the Honourable Member of Parliament for Asante Akim South, Hon. Kwaku Asante Boateng, and considers such a statement unfortunate and disassociates itself from those remarks. The NPP reiterates its longstanding commitment to inclusivity, equality, and national cohesion”.

It continued that the party was open to welcome any Ghanaian who believes in its principles, ideologies and is committed to upholding the democracy of the country and ensuring national development, citing that NPP’s most valued assets in members are not defined by their personal attributes but by their loyalty, commitment and service to the party and the country as a whole.

“As a political tradition founded on the principles of freedom, justice, democracy, and equal opportunity, the Party remains dedicated to fostering a society where every Ghanaian, irrespective of race, ethnicity, gender, religion, or social background, can participate meaningfully in the governance and development of our nation. The Party emphasises that political membership and recognition within the NPP are not defined by personal attributes or identity, but by one’s loyalty, commitment, and service to the Party’s ideals and the national interest”, the statement continued.

It added that, in light of this, the NPP, therefore, welcomes all citizens who subscribe to its core values and principles and are willing to contribute to the advancement of Ghana’s democratic and developmental agenda.

“As a Party of unity and progress, the NPP assures the Ghanaian people that it will continue to uphold the dignity of every citizen and to promote a political culture anchored in tolerance, respect, and inclusiveness”, it concluded.

  • “She was a true champion”- Dr Bawumia mourns Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings

“She was a true champion”- Dr Bawumia mourns Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings

Former Vice President and 2024 NPP flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has offered his deepest condolences to the family of the late Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings.

“To the children and family of the late Madam Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, I share in your sorrow and extend my deepest condolences on your loss,” he shared on his official Facebook page.

Dr Bawumia described her passing as a great loss to the nation and to the cause of women’s empowerment in Ghana, lauding her unflinching support and commitment to promoting the rights of women and girls.

He praised the former First Lady for being a movement and not just a talker for women’s rights and an advocate.

He lauded Rawlings for being more than just an advocate, but a movement leader who inspired and mobilised women across the country to fight for equality and leadership.

“Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings leaves behind a legacy defined by her unwavering commitment to the nation’s women and girls. Throughout her time as First Lady of the Republic of Ghana and beyond, she was a true champion of women’s advocacy. She didn’t just speak about women’s rights; she mobilised a movement.

“Her work empowered countless women across Ghana to achieve financial independence and take up leadership roles. May her soul rest in perfect peace,” the former Vice President concluded, Dr Bawumia stated.

The Rawlings family has appealed to the public for privacy as they mourn the passing of the late former First Lady, Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings.

Nana Konadu passed after a brief illness on Thursday, October 23, at the Ridge Hospital.

Speaking at a brief press conference at her Ridge residence in Accra, the family head, Oheneba Lovelace Prempeh, announced that details regarding the burial of Ghana’s first female presidential candidate would be communicated in due course by the President. He, however, urged the public to allow the family some privacy as they mourn their beloved.

“At this stage, we are in deep mourning and respectfully ask for privacy. All further announcements will be made by the government,” the family head stated.

The late former President Jerry John Rawlings’ passing has been formally communicated to the Asante Overlord, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, who is his cousin, according to Oheneba Lovelace Prempeh.

Known widely as the Iron Lady of Ghanaian politics, she rose to prominence in the 1980s and 1990s through her bold activism and fearless advocacy. Beyond being a former First Lady, she made history as the first woman to contest for the presidency in Ghana—an achievement that solidified her reputation as a pioneer.

Her life reflected unwavering dedication to women’s empowerment and a determination to challenge established norms, leaving behind a lasting legacy as one of the most influential female leaders in Ghana’s post-independence history.

    The Longest Serving First Lady

Nana Konadu Agyeman, born on November 17, 1948, in Cape Coast, Central Region, began her education at Achimota School, where she would later meet her husband, Flt. Lt. Jerry John Rawlings.

She pursued Art and Textiles at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) and furthered her studies abroad, earning a diploma in Interior Design from the London College of Arts in 1975. Her quest for knowledge continued with a diploma in Advanced Personnel Management and a certificate in Development from GIMPA, underscoring her intellectual curiosity and commitment to personal growth.

Her marriage to Rawlings in 1977 marked the beginning of her deep involvement in Ghana’s political evolution. As First Lady, she served during two significant phases of Ghana’s governance—first in 1979 under the Armed Forces Revolutionary Council (AFRC) and later from 1981 to 2001 under the PNDC and the Fourth Republic.

Her 20-year tenure as First Lady, the longest in Ghana’s history, provided her with a unique platform to drive social transformation and advocate for national progress.

The Engine of Women’s Empowerment: 31st DWM

Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings is widely recognised as the founder and president of the 31st December Women’s Movement (31st DWM), which she established in 1982.

Far from being a symbolic organisation, the movement became a dynamic grassroots force dedicated to mobilising and empowering women across Ghana, particularly in rural areas, inspired by her conviction that women held the key to breaking the cycle of poverty.

Its achievements were visible and far-reaching, transforming women’s roles from passive beneficiaries of aid to active participants in the country’s political and economic development.

Grassroots Mobilisation: It mobilised an estimated two million women across the country, encouraging their participation in community and national decision-making. The Movement established over 870 pre-schools across the regions to free women to engage in economic activities.

Economic Projects: The 31st DWM supported numerous income-generating activities and small-scale, village-level economic projects, encouraging women to save money for community development.

Education and Health: It ran extensive functional adult literacy programmes to tackle high illiteracy rates among rural women and implemented public health programmes focusing on nutrition and immunisation.

Legal and Political Reform: She was instrumental in advocating for legal changes, including the crucial role she played in the adoption of the Intestate Succession Law (PNDCL 111), which drastically improved the inheritance rights of widows and children—a vital shift away from traditional barriers where women often had no rights of inheritance upon the death of their husbands. Furthermore, through her efforts, Ghana became the first nation in the world to approve the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) in 1991.

Agyeman-Rawlings often framed the movement as an essential political tool: “Before December 31, 1981, they had no power of influence in law or politics… I can see from the self-esteem and near arrogance of the women that now we’ve actually been able to break through this thick wall,” she once noted, highlighting the movement’s mission to empower.

An Unyielding Political Force and Trailblazer

Even after her years as First Lady, Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings continued to be a formidable presence in Ghana’s political space, known for her strong will and unshakable principles. Her political approach, described by some analysts as femocracy, combined her passion for women’s empowerment with her assertive influence in national affairs. Her rise to the position of First Vice Chairperson of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in 2009 marked the height of her political engagement within the party.

Tensions, however, surfaced when she challenged the late President John Atta Mills for the NDC’s flagbearership in 2011, a bold move that unsettled the political establishment. This turning point ultimately led her to establish the National Democratic Party (NDP), symbolising her determination to chart an independent path.

In 2016, Nana Konadu made history as Ghana’s first female presidential candidate—a milestone that not only broke barriers but also inspired countless women to aspire to leadership. Although she garnered just 0.16% of the votes, her candidacy embodied courage and the relentless pursuit of gender equality in politics.

Her life reflected endurance, conviction, and an unwavering faith in the potential of Ghanaian women. Through her activism and leadership, she left an indelible mark on the nation, paving the way for generations of women to dream bigger and lead boldly.

  • NPP primaries: Ken Agyapong takes lead in recent survey with 53%, Dr Bawumia trails with 39%

NPP primaries: Ken Agyapong takes lead in recent survey with 53%, Dr Bawumia trails with 39%

In late September, Global Info Analytics predicted that Dr Bawumia, the former Vice President and flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), would lead in the primaries against his competitors, particularly former Assin Central Member of Parliament Kennedy Ohene Agyapong.

However, in barely two weeks, the Pan-African civil society organisation, Sanity Africa, which recently predicted the victory of Bernard Baidoo of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the tightly contested Akwatia by-election, has released its Phase Two survey on the New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential primaries.

According to the organisation’s recent survey, there has been a shift in the landscape as the party gears up towards the January 2026 primaries.

The abridged October report suggests that Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, popularly known as Ken, has strengthened his lead among NPP delegates, commanding 53.1% of voting intentions, which represents a 1.7 % point increase from the Phase One survey conducted in July.

The former Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia (DMB), trails with 39.0%, indicating a 3.2-point drop. Behind them are Dr Bryan Acheampong at 5.0% (up 1.9 points), Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum at 2.0% (down 1.0 point), and Ing. Kwabena A. Agyepong at 0.9% (rising from 0.3%).

The results of the survey carried out between July and October 2025 came from a sample of 15,000 delegates from an estimated 218,000 in the expanded voter album across all 276 constituencies.

It boasts a 99% confidence level with a ±5% margin of error. At the regional level, Ken Agyapong sits atop as a leading candidate in ten regions out of Ghana’s 16, including strongholds such as Ashanti (54.8%), Central (69.0%), and Eastern (54.8%).

His biggest contender, Dr Bawumia, on the other hand, still holds his lead in the Northern sector, thus with an advantage in the rest of the six regions.

Meanwhile, Global InfoAnalytics tracking poll named former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia as the people’s preferred candidate to lead the New Patriotic Party (NPP) into the 2028 general election against his closest contender, former Member of Parliament (MP) for Assin Central, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong.

The poll suggests that 57% of voters prefer Dr Bawumia as the party’s presidential candidate, while 29% picked Kennedy Ohene Agyapong.

The other contenders, i.e., former Minister of Education, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, secured 6%, Minister of Food and Agriculture, Dr Bryan Acheampong, polled 5%, while former NPP General Secretary, Kwabena Agyapong, registered 3%.

In the critical swing regions of Greater Accra, Central, and Western, Dr Bawumia also leads decisively with 57%, followed by Kennedy Agyapong at 32%. Dr Adutwum and Dr Acheampong each secured 4%, while Kwabena Agyapong obtained 3%.

The survey further indicates that in a potential runoff between Dr Bawumia and Kennedy Agyapong, Dr. Bawumia would extend his lead with 62% against Agyapong’s 38%.

Among NPP delegates, Dr Bawumia remains firmly ahead with 47%, while Kennedy Agyapong trails with 17%. Dr Acheampong and Dr Adutwum received 3% and 1% respectively, with Kwabena Agyapong also at 1%. However, 27% of delegates remain undecided, and 4% declined to disclose their preference.

In a runoff scenario within the delegates’ poll, Dr Bawumia commands 49%, compared to Kennedy Agyapong’s 19%, with 27% undecided and 5% declining to disclose.

The vetting committee of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) on Tuesday, September 23, assessed the former Vice-President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia and four other persons contesting to lead the party into the 2028 elections.

The four others who have expressed interest in contesting include Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum (former Education Minister and Member of Parliament for Bosomtwe), Bryan Acheampong (Member of Parliament for Abetifi), former party General Secretary Kwabena Agyepong, and former Assin Central MP Kennedy Ohene Agyapong.

On Tuesday, July 29, the NPP opened nominations for its 2028 flagbearer position. Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, the party’s 2024 flagbearer and former Vice President, Kennedy Agyapong, Kwabena Agyepong, and Dr. Osei Adutwum have all picked up nomination forms.

Former General Secretary of the NPP, Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, officially filed his nomination forms on Tuesday, August 26. Party executives received the nomination forms from former Assin Central MP and presidential hopeful Kennedy Ohene Agyapong on Wednesday, August 27.

Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum filed his nomination forms for the NPP flagbearer race on Thursday, August 28, 2025.

In the meantime, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has received strong backing from 268 former Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs), who paid him a visit in June to pledge their support.Former Energy Minister and running mate of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) 2024 presidential candidate, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, has decided to throw his weight behind Dr Mahamudu Bawumia ahead of the party’s presidential primaries in 2026.

In an interview on Asempa FM on August 26, the former minister noted that he remains grateful to the former Vice President who decided to make him his running mate despite the many individuals who advised him to do otherwise. According to Dr Opoku Prempeh, popularly known as Napo, Dr Bawumia was engaged countless times by some bigwigs in the party to pick someone else to be his running mate.

“I am not ungrateful. Look at this big party and all the people who were praying for the running mate slot; he ignored all of them and made me his running mate.

  • NIB could not release Wontumi to us because of the crowd – Dr Bawumia

NIB could not release Wontumi to us because of the crowd – Dr Bawumia

Former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has stated that the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) denied him the opportunity to meet detained Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, due to the presence of the crowd at their premises.

He was at the facility with Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin to see Wontumi and find out how he was doing, but the NIB denied them such an opportunity.

Stating the reason behind NIB’s action, he said, “Unfortunately, we are here, but the NIB feels that the crowd is such that they are not able to bring him here at the moment, and they have to make proper arrangements to bring him so that we can see him,” Dr Bawumia expressed.

The Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako (Chairman Wontumi, is being investigated for criminal activities.

He has been accused of fraud, causing financial loss to the state, and money laundering.

This information was made known by Deputy Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Justice Srem-Sai in a statement posted on his official X account on Thursday, May 29.

He wrote, “Suspect BERNARD ANTWI BOASIAKO, a.k.a. Chairman Wontumi, is under investigation for various criminal offences (including fraud, causing financial loss to the State, and money laundering)”.

According to him, the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) is assisting with the probe to recover suspected proceeds from the alleged crime.

“The suspect is also under a second strand of investigation which is part of a larger international organised crime scheme. The Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) is assiduously working with our international law enforcement partners on this second strand of criminal investigations,” he added.

Chairman Wontumi spent Wednesday night in the custody of EOCO’s headquarters.

EOCO arrested Chairman Wontumi on Tuesday after he appeared before the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service at 3pm.

He was sent to the hospital over illness and was sent to EOCO’s custody after getting better.

On Tuesday, supporters of the opposition party massed up at the EOCO office, demanding the release of Wontumi.

The Ashanti Regional Chairman voluntarily made an appearance at the CID headquarters on Monday alongside his legal team, including former Attorney General Godfred Dame, after an invitation from the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service.

He was cautioned on the following allegations: undertaking mining operations without a license, entering a forest reserve without authorisation and pollution of water bodies.

However, according to sources, Chairman Wontumi denied these claims during his interrogation, presenting documents to authenticate his claims.

He insists he was not involved in any illegal mining activities or operating in any forest reserve.

The search comes after Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah Buah, ordered the immediate revocation of Akonta Mining’s licenses, citing allegations of illegal mining and other violations.

Adum market fire: Bawumia backs traders’ plan to rebuild, donates GHS200k, 1,000 bags of cement

Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has thrown his support behind traders affected by the devastating fire at the Adum Market in Kumasi, which destroyed several shops and properties in the early hours of Friday, March 21, 2025.

The fire spread rapidly due to challenges with accessibility within the market, making it difficult for firefighters to contain the blaze. Following the incident, authorities met with the traders and proposed constructing a new market with better safety and accessibility features. However, the traders have strongly opposed this plan, insisting on rebuilding the market themselves to restore their businesses quickly.

Despite concerns raised by the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) and other stakeholders over the traders’ decision, they remain determined to take charge of the reconstruction.

In response, Dr. Bawumia has stepped in to support their efforts, donating GHS 200,000 and 1,000 bags of cement to assist them.

During his visit to the market, he assured the traders of his full backing, saying:

“Additionally, I have heard that traders are willing to rebuild the market themselves, and I fully support their decision. Nobody would lose their respective spots; they all must be here. I promise to assist you in this effort, and I am confident that the government will also offer its support.

“When you are affected, I am affected too, and I am here to help. So, I’m here to offer GHS 2 million from my own pocket and 1,000 bags of cement.

“I had sleepless nights after the news came to me because I’m worried. People have lost their properties; some have worked here for over 21 years and counting. How would they survive?”

Dr. Bawumia further emphasized the need for a long-term solution to prevent similar incidents in the future. He called on the government to complete the stalled Kejetia Market Phase Two project to provide traders with a safer and well-planned trading space.

“Until investigations are complete, we cannot determine the exact cause of the fire. In the meantime, I want to appeal to the government to complete the Kejetia Market Phase Two project. Although we were unable to finish it, we completed about 80% of the work. We urge the government to finalize it to support traders.”

Mass dimissal: Stop sacking people and create new jobs – Bawumia goes after Mahama

Former vice president Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has taken issue with President John Mahama for removing public servants appointed by the previous government.

In a statement, he called on the President to prioritize job creation instead of laying off workers, saying the decision goes against democratic values and campaign promises.

“The least a party that campaigned on jobs could do under conditions of unemployment is to also innovate and create jobs rather than dismiss people,” he said.

He further described the dismissals as ironic and unjust, arguing that even non-political public servants were being targeted for their perceived affiliations.

“In some of the cases, the only reason for dismissal was that the persons whose livelihoods have been destroyed are known to or related to politicians, as if to suggest that they cannot live independent professional lives, however qualified they are,” he stated.

Dr. Bawumia also raised concerns about what he described as a deteriorating security situation in the country, citing attacks on journalists, military raids on former government officials’ homes, and violent mob actions against state institutions.

“This is rather reminiscent of a military takeover and not a peaceful democratic transition,” he bemoaned.

As tensions rise over the mass dismissals, Dr. Bawumia has urged the President to reconsider the decision and lead in a way that benefits all Ghanaians. He stressed that the nation should not return to old political mistakes.

“There is no reset by repeating or escalating what may have happened in the past,” he stressed.

Calling for the protection of state institutions and constitutional order, he declared, “Ghana can do better. Ghana must do better.”

Meanwhile, New Patriotic Party (NPP) National Organiser Henry Nana Boakye has filed a lawsuit challenging the dismissals.

  • “Mahama won, but Bawumia was the better candidate” – IMANI’s Kofi Bentil

“Mahama won, but Bawumia was the better candidate” – IMANI’s Kofi Bentil

Vice President of IMANI Africa, Kofi Bentil, has reiterated that Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the outgoing Vice President and the flagbearer for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the 2024 elections, remains the better choice for Ghana.

Prior to the election, Bentil strongly advocated for Dr. Bawumia on social media, encouraging Ghanaians to support him over former President John Mahama.

A week after Dr. Bawumia’s defeat to Mahama in the presidential race, Bentil reaffirmed his backing for Bawumia during a discussion on Joy News’ Newsfile, asserting that Bawumia is still the superior candidate compared to Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

“I still believe that Dr Bawumia is the better candidate. He [John Mahama] disagreed with me, but he has won fair and square. I wish President Mahama well. If he succeeds, he succeeds for all of us, but for me, Dr Bawumia was the better candidate,” he told Samson Lardy on the show.

According to Bentil, his belief is supported by research conducted by IMANI in February 2024, ten months before the December 7 polls.

He explained the outcome of the research, saying, “I took a principled position. What you see here is research we did in February, which showed us that it looked like President Mahama would win, but this was driven by the anger of the Ghanaian people. What I did was to say, ‘Drop your anger and look at the candidates’, and I still believe Dr Bawumia was the better candidate.”

During the same discussion, Kofi Adams, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Buem in the Oti Region from the National Democratic Congress (NDC), disagreed with Kofi Bentil.

Adams argued that rather than debating which candidate was the better choice for Ghana, Bentil and IMANI Africa should have focused more on addressing the arrogance of the NPP government and other pressing social issues affecting the country.

Without allowing Mr Bentil to elaborate on his point, the MP quickly countered, saying, “They ignored the economy, ignored the arrogance, ignored the environmental destruction that was going on, and were just looking at strains.”

Meanwhile, some NPP members have argued that Dr Bawumia was punished for sins he did not commit and that the NPP lost because their members did not turn out to vote in their numbers.

Let us stand together – Bawumia urges NPP supporters after shocking 2024 polls defeat

Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has urged party members to avoid blaming one another after the party’s significant defeat in the 2024 elections. Instead, he called for unity and resilience as they prepare for the future.

The Vice President’s appeal follows reports of finger-pointing among party members over the NPP’s loss to the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Addressing supporters from the Klottey Korle and Ayawaso East constituencies at his residence on Tuesday morning, Dr. Bawumia emphasized that statistical trends from the election indicated the NPP conceded victory to the NDC.

Dr. Bawumia encouraged members to remain optimistic, stating that he continues to trust in God’s plan. He thanked them for their unwavering support and urged them to stay committed to the task ahead.

“There is more life ahead, so just relax,” he assured supporters during the gathering.

The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) recorded an impressive comeback at the end of the 2024 polls conducted on December 7, which saw more than 11 million Ghanaians cast their ballot.

Barely 24 hours after polls closed, Dr. Bawumia conceded defeat on Sunday, December 8, and congratulated John Mahama on his victory, even before the Electoral Commission officially declared Mahama as President-elect.

Former President Mahama made a sweeping comeback, defeating Dr. Bawumia by over 1.6 million votes in the 2024 elections, according to information provided by the Electoral Commission. Mr Mahama secured 56.15% of the total votes cast, while Bawumia obtained 43.85%.

The 9th Parliament, which takes effect on January 7, 2025, will see an NDC Majority Caucus with more than 170 seats. The Minority Caucus, occupied by the NPP, will less than 100 seats.

“Not even these results will shake me” – Efia Odo after failed Bawumia win prophecy

Ghanaian socialite and influencer Efia Odo has reacted to the results of the December 7 elections, where the opposition NDC claimed victory.

Earlier on December 2, 2024, Efia Odo had predicted on X that NPP presidential candidate Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia would win the election. Her prediction stirred controversy, with some accusing her of being paid to support Bawumia.

In response, Efia Odo explained that her prediction was based on a divine revelation and not an endorsement, firmly denying the bribery claims.

After John Mahama’s victory was announced, Efia Odo shared her thoughts on X, expressing her continued faith in God despite her prediction not coming true.

She acknowledged the backlash and trolling she received but stated that her trust in God remains unshaken.

“We all have to go through a moment of shame, insult, and being made fun of because of what we believe. And in those moments, will your belief waiver, or will it stand firm?

“I’m a believer in God through Jesus Christ. Not even these results will shake me or make me lose faith in Him. Laugh now; my peace is in my soul, and no one can take it from me because Jesus Christ gave it to me,” Efia Odo posted.

Meanwhile, although the Electoral Commission is yet to officially announce the final results, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the NPP flagbearer, has conceded defeat and congratulated his opponent, John Mahama of the NDC.

Former President John Dramani Mahama, ahead of being elected as Ghana’s 8th President in the Fourth Republic, outlined his plans for the first 120 days of his presidency if elected in the 2024 elections.

His focus will be on tackling economic challenges, improving government efficiency, and enhancing social services.

After the elections on December 7, 2024, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the NPP candidate, publicly conceded defeat to Mahama.

In his statement, Bawumia emphasized the importance of maintaining peace and pledged to ensure a smooth transition of power to Mahama’s administration.

Although provisional data present victory for the NDC and John Mahama, the Electoral Commission (EC) is yet to validate the electoral results.

The Vice President and the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential candidate for the 2024 elections, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has cast his vote in the Walewale constituency in the North East Region.

Dr. Bawumia, who is contesting to become Ghana’s next president, exercised his franchise at his hometown polling station.

The Walewale constituency holds deep sentimental value for the Vice President, as it is not only his place of origin but also a key political stronghold for his party.

His presence there is seen as a boost for voter turnout, benefiting both his presidential bid and the NPP’s parliamentary candidate in the constituency.

As the NPP’s candidate, Dr. Bawumia has campaigned on a platform of economic recovery, digital transformation, and job creation, positioning himself as the leader to steer Ghana through its current challenges.

His voting today marks a key moment in his journey toward potentially becoming Ghana’s first Muslim president should he be elected at the end of the 2024 election cycle.

  • I don’t feel any hardship in Ghana” – Bantama market woman disagrees with Mahama on the economy

I don’t feel any hardship in Ghana” – Bantama market woman disagrees with Mahama on the economy

Prominent research bodies, including the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) and Fitch Solutions, have released projections concerning Ghana’s upcoming presidential election, scheduled for December 7, 2024.

Both institutions predict a victory for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, John Dramani Mahama, citing challenges such as declining living standards and economic hardships under the current New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration.

These issues have been central to Mahama’s campaign message, which emphasises the need for change to address Ghana’s economic difficulties.

However, this narrative has not resonated with all voters.

In a video circulating on X (formerly Twitter), a trader at Bantama Market firmly declared her support for the NPP presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

She dismissed Mahama’s claims of widespread economic hardship with a passionate accusation of the former president selling Ghana’s port to a private group under a 35-year deal, resulting in increased port fees.

Asked if Mahama’s claim of harship in Ghana is true, she said, “As for me, I don’t see any harship in the country.”

She further went on to commend the Akufo-Addo-led government for its flagship policy, the Free SHS, for which she insists the NPP has her vote.

On her part, she chooses the NPP because, as an illeterate, she would like to see all her children educated, which would be possible only under the NPP-led government, which would offer a free senior high school program.

“Are you asking who I’m voting for in this election? Why would I vote for John Dramani Mahama when Nana Addo and Bawumia are in the race?

For me, I’m voting for Bawumia to continue Akufo-Addo’s good works, especially the Free SHS policy. I may not be educated, but what matters to me is seeing my children educated and not rearing chicks.

Even if Akufo-Addo had done nothing else, the Free SHS policy alone is enough for me to vote for them again” she said..

Ghanaian musician Kweku Flick has been spotted with Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s campaign team for a door-to-door outreach in Kumasi.

During the visit to PZ and Blue Light areas, Kweku Flick interacted with residents alongside Kwabena Ampofo Appiah, the Managing Director of the State Housing Company Limited.

The campaign seeks to build grassroots support for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) ahead of the upcoming elections, with Dr. Bawumia leading efforts to connect directly with the public.

Kweku Flick, who previously joined the Bantama Walk and performed at various party events, continues to show his support for the party’s agenda.

The NPP plans to conclude its campaign season with a major rally at the Legon Complex in Accra on Thursday, December 5.

The event will bring together party supporters, sympathisers, and key leaders to strengthen Dr. Bawumia’s candidacy. It is expected to be a vibrant gathering as the party makes its final push before the elections.

The newly launched Ghana Card-enabled E-gate at Kotoka International Airport experienced an unexpected glitch during its inaugural use when it failed to open promptly for Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

As the first person to test the system, the Vice President faced an awkward delay, waiting several minutes before the gate finally activated.

Reacting to the incident, Ningo-Prampram MP Sam George mocked the situation on Twitter, suggesting that the system’s failure highlighted the risks of rushing initiatives to score quick points. He described it as a classic case of how haste can lead to embarrassing outcomes.

He enquired if the airport did not carry out User Acceptance Testing on the system before allowing the Vice President to commission.

The incident has stirred a vibrant conversation online, with many discussing the effectiveness and readiness of the E-gate system. While some expressed concerns about the technical issues, supporters of the Vice President dismissed the mishap as a typical challenge with new technology during its initial stages.

The Ghana Card-enabled E-gate system is part of a broader initiative to modernise public services and position Ghana as a digital leader in Africa.

Despite the mixed reactions to the launch issue, advocates of the project remain optimistic, believing it will bring significant improvements once the system is fully operational.

The next president of Ghana is Bawumia; it’s what God wants —Efia Odo

Ghanaian socialite Efia Odo has waded in on the recent trend of celebrities endorsing vice president and running mate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

The socialite who recently announced her turn and surrendered to God with no interest in “the things of the world” in an X (formerly Twitter) shared God’s choice of Dr Bawumia as president of Ghana ahead of the 2024 polls happening on December 7.

According to her, Bawumia is “The next president of Ghana is Bawumia; it’s what God wants.”

This news has surprised many netizens, as several have criticised her for allegedly accepting a bribe to endorse the NPP’s candidate. Efia Odo is widely known for her vocal criticism of the current government.

Ghana goes to the polls on December 7, where all Ghanaians will vote massively for the country’s development.

I promise to go back to the shrine if Bawumia doesn’t win 2024 elections – Nana Agradaa

Evangelist Dr. Patricia Asiamah, also known as Nana Agradaa and founder of the Heaven Way Church, has vowed to give up Christianity if her prophecy about Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia winning the next presidential election doesn’t happen.

She firmly believes she heard from God and is confident in her vision of the Vice President’s victory. She asserts that any outcome contrary to this vision would imply that God is untruthful, which would be a basis for which she would consider returning to the shrine from which she came.

“If Bawumia does not win, then it means I’m not serving the correct God and that whatever revelation I believe is fake. If that’s the case, I will go back to the shrine and serve the gods. Mark my words,” she said in a video shared on X.

She further went on to urge all Ghanaians to vote for Dr. Bawumia, as he has already been appointed by God. On her part, whether he is voted for or not, his win is guaranteed by God.

“It has already been destined that Dr. Bawumia will win the elections. So whether or not you vote for him, he will still win. So why not vote for him? I’m not here to do politics; I’m just trying to tell Ghanaians the vision God has given me. I believe in God and whatever He tells me to be the truth,” she said.

Unstable power supply threatens Ghana’s electric vehicle charging future

Consultant for the Energy Commission, Dr. Godwin Kafui Ayetor, has called on the government to prioritise alternative power sources to support the country’s rollout of electric vehicles (EVs), citing challenges with Ghana’s EV charging infrastructure.

Speaking at a public forum organised by the Public Interest and Accountability Committee (PIAC) on November 21, 2024, in Kumasi, Dr. Ayetor expressed concern over Ghana’s reliance on the national grid, emphasising its vulnerability to power fluctuations. He advocated for incentives to encourage private sector investment in renewable energy-powered charging stations to reduce dependence on the grid.

“The current reliance on the national grid is unsustainable given the frequent power fluctuations. Incentivising the private sector to invest in renewable energy-powered charging stations will ensure a more reliable and sustainable EV infrastructure,” Dr. Ayetor stated.

Highlighting the limited infrastructure, he noted that Ghana has only seven charging stations, all situated in Accra, leaving other regions without access and hindering the widespread adoption of EVs.

Dr. Ayetor urged regulators and government agencies to develop a comprehensive framework for strategically placing charging stations across the country. He proposed mapping out key locations in cities like Accra to improve coordination and accessibility.

His remarks come in the wake of concerns raised by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Energy Commission (EC) about the infrastructure needed to support Ghana’s EV rollout. These concerns were outlined during a joint event where the Market Opportunity Study on Electric Vehicle Charging Stations in Ghana was presented.

The report analyzed Ghana’s current EV charging and battery swap infrastructure, identifying significant opportunities and challenges in advancing the EV sector.

Don’t forget I became president through NPP – Kuffour after backlash for endorsing Bawumia

Former President John Agyekum Kufuor has faced significant criticism for endorsing Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as the “man of the moment” for the December 2024 elections.

During a meeting with journalists on November 12, 2024, the former president praised Dr. Bawumia’s economic expertise and leadership abilities, urging Ghanaians to support him in the upcoming elections.

However, his endorsement did not sit well with some individuals, including Alan Kyerematen, a former member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and founder of the “Butterfly Movement.” Kyerematen remarked that the former president’s public backing of Dr. Bawumia tarnishes his political legacy. Members of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) also weighed in, with some openly insulting Mr. Kufuor for his stance.

In response to these criticisms, former President Kufuor has dismissed calls to remain silent on the 2024 general elections.

Speaking to supporters at the Ofori Panin Palace on November 27, during a campaign event with NPP running mate Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh in the Abuakwa South constituency, Mr. Kufuor reaffirmed his endorsement of Dr. Bawumia, standing firmly by his decision.

He emphasised that while he is recognised as a statesman, Ghanaians should remember that he rose to the presidency on the ticket of the NPP.

“I am facing criticism for voicing my opinions on national matters due to my position as a statesman. Experience and wisdom are often associated with age.

“The New Patriotic Party (NPP) is my political affiliation, and it was through this party that I attained the presidency. Additionally, my child, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has been elected through the party.

He went on to praise Dr Bawumia, citing that he performed excellently during his administration while “he was a member of the Bank of Ghana team and demonstrated remarkable performance during a challenging period when Ghana was in financial distress. Their efforts were instrumental in revitalising the economy at that time.”

2024 Polls: A vote for Bawumia is a vote for more suffering – KSM warns

Popular Ghanaian media personality Kwaku Sintim-Misa, commonly referred to as KSM, has issued a caution to Ghanaians ahead of the 2024 general elections on December 7.

A known critic of the current NPP government and its performance, KSM warned citizens against voting for Vice President and NPP flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

According to him, electing Dr. Bawumia as President in the upcoming elections would amount to endorsing continued hardship, corruption, and impunity.

“If this election is free, fair, and transparent, and Ghanaians choose Bawumia as their man, I promise you, you will see more. You will see more arrogance, more impunity, and more corruption, which have plagued us over the past eight years,” KSM warned.

He added that those who support such an outcome would have to accept the consequences without protest.

“And your mouths will be sealed, so you won’t be able to say anything,” he added.

KSM passionately called for a change, urging Ghanaians to “rescue” the country from its current state.

“The country has been muddied. The country has been deprived. The country needs to be rescued,” he lamented.

In a video shared on social media on November 24, 2024, Nana Agradaa stated that God had revealed Dr. Bawumia’s triumph to her, assuring him to remain confident about the election’s outcome.

“Today is November 24, 2024, and God has revealed a message to me to tell Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia. God said I should tell him that he should not worry… That is what God has revealed to me. Be calm, and you will see the power of God,” she said in the video, which showed her wearing NPP paraphernalia and accompanied by two individuals.

  • Ghana receives first 50 electric buses in bold move towards eco-friendly public transport

Ghana receives first 50 electric buses in bold move towards eco-friendly public transport

Ghana has received its first shipment of 50 electric buses as part of a government initiative led by Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia to bring 100 of these buses to the country by the end of the year.

The new fleet, which arrived on November 12, is intended to reduce carbon emissions, lower transport costs, and introduce cleaner energy options into the nation’s public transport system.

The electric bus plan was first announced by Dr. Bawumia in July 2024 during a meeting with the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU). According to Dr. Bawumia, the government’s push toward electric vehicles (EVs) aligns with Ghana’s climate goals and aims to reduce the high cost of transportation for citizens.

“One of the issues we are looking at as far as reducing the cost of transport in Ghana is that we go through two things: we should move towards electric vehicles, which will help the environment,” he said. Dr. Bawumia explained that this initial fleet of 100 buses is intended to demonstrate the benefits of electric vehicles to the public.

Officials from the Ministry of Transport view the new fleet as a way to introduce a more sustainable and efficient public transport option, especially in urban areas like Accra and Kumasi, where pollution levels from fuel-powered vehicles are high.

Ministry sources indicate that the buses will first be deployed in major cities to maximise their environmental impact.

The electric bus initiative also aims to motivate private transport operators to consider similar eco-friendly options. In addition, the government has outlined plans to build a nationwide network of EV charging stations, which will support the new bus fleet and contribute to the infrastructure for future electric vehicle use.

The public response has generally been positive, with many hopeful that the shift to electric buses will address long standing issues in Ghana’s public transportation system. As these buses enter regular service, they are expected to reduce Ghana’s dependence on imported fuel and could lead to lower transportation costs over time.

  • What Bawumia said to Bernard Mornah after disqualification from presidential race

What Bawumia said to Bernard Mornah after disqualification from presidential race

People’s National Convention (PNC) has disclosed that Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia reached out to comfort their flagbearer, Bernard Mornah, following his disqualification from the 2024 presidential elections.

PNC Chairman Samson Asake Awingobit noted that the party had expected sympathy from the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), considering the political affiliations often linked with the PNC.

However, the anticipated support from NDC leaders, including former President John Mahama and prominent figures like Johnson Asiedu Nketia, Fifi Kwetey, and Omane Boamah, did not materialise.

During an appearance on Asempa FM on October 9, 2024, Awingobit expressed his astonishment at Dr. Bawumia’s gesture, as he had not expected the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer to reach out.

“Could you imagine that since the time we did our election, the filing of our nomination and the Electoral Commission disqualified us, people who believe that my candidate, Bernard Mornah, is an ally to the NDC… could you believe nobody from the NDC, not even President Mahama… called Bernard Mornah to sympathise with us?” onuaonline.com quoted him to have said.

Awingobit further stated that they had initially thought the NPP was responsible for their disqualification, suggesting a potential conspiracy involving the Electoral Commission (EC).

However, he acknowledged that the party was surprised when Dr. Bawumia reached out personally to Mornah to extend his condolences.

“You know who called? I had a cold when he [Bernard Mornah] told me. He said it was the New Patriotic Party presidential candidate, His Excellency Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia. Even I and my leader were saying that it was NPP that made Jean Mensa disqualify us.

“But the one you think is your enemy is not your enemy. Dr. Bawumia could pick up his phone and say, ‘My younger brother, it is well with you,’” Awingobit recounted.

Behead me if Bawumia wins in any Zongo community – NDC Officer

National Communications Director for the Zongo Caucus of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Alhaji Mohammed Naziru Seidu, confidently declared that Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia will fail to secure any votes from Zongo communities in the upcoming elections.

He emphasised that NDC’s candidate, former President John Dramani Mahama, is poised to dominate in all Zongo areas.

Speaking on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM’s Nyankonton Mu Nsem, Seidu made a bold statement, offering to have his head cut off if Dr. Bawumia wins even a single Zongo community.

Despite being told that such rhetoric was extreme, he stood by his claim, insisting that his head be taken if the Vice President prevails in any Zongo locality.

“But I am telling you before God and man that if Bawumia is able to secure victory in one single Zongo community in Ghana, cut off my head. I repeat, if Bawumia is able to secure victory in one Zongo community in Ghana, cut off my head,” he declared.

He posited that it was obvious that Mahama had been ordained by God to be elected as the next president of Ghana, and his victory would be massive.

He noted that prophets who had earlier prophesied against Mahama’s election win have now come up with a new prophecy, predicting his election as the next president.

Alhaji Mohammed Naziru Seidu lamented that the ruling government, under the leadership of President Akufo-Addo with support from his vice president, has destroyed not only the country’s economy but all state institutions, religion, and our environment with galamsey.

“The President Akufo-Addo and Bawumia administrations have not only destroyed our economy.

“They have also destroyed our country with galamsey, and they have destroyed this country through religion. They want to divide this country through religion by making divisive religious comments.

He added, “I know the work we have done and what we are still doing. We know the promises and focus of the Zongo communities.

“We know the challenges they are going through. We know what they have told us, and we know we will convince them to vote for former President John Dramani Mahama. That is why I have said that if Bawumia secures victory in one Zongo community, cut off my head.”

“It is his right; there’s nothing wrong” – Islamic cleric defends Bawumia on receiving prayers at a shrine

Islamic cleric Alhaji Abdul Hannan Abdul Rahman has defended Vice President and NPP flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s decision to receive prayers at a shrine during his community campaign in Accra.

The leader of the Coalition of Muslim Organisations Ghana stated that Dr. Bawumia’s actions are consistent with the behaviour of a devout Muslim and do not violate Islamic principles.

“Let’s be fair to him; he is a vice president for all. He represents everyone.

So, if he visits a group and is invited and prayed for without him being the one pouring libation in prayer, it is his right, and Islam has made it flexible for all of us to do such in furtherance of national cohesion,” he stated.

The cleric argued that as a leader in a multi-faith country, the vice president has the right to promote religious tolerance, and Dr. Bawumia’s recent actions reflect his leadership qualities.

As part of his campaign in the Greater Accra Region, Dr. Bawumia visited several Ga communities, where a video surfaced showing him receiving blessings from a Wulomo at a shrine.

This has sparked debate, with some critics questioning Dr. Bawumia’s commitment to Islam after the video’s circulation. In contrast, NPP supporters have praised him for demonstrating religious inclusivity.

At the same time, former President John Dramani Mahama, flagbearer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), criticised religious leaders for not holding the government and Dr. Bawumia accountable for what he views as poor governance.

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has highlighted his government’s commendable performance despite facing significant challenges, including the COVID-19 pandemic.

He emphasised that his administration has made notable strides in various sectors of the economy.

Addressing the 13th Biennial and 51st Conference of the Methodist Church of Ghana in Kumasi, the President called on Ghanaians to place their trust in Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, encouraging them to support his bid to carry forward the initiatives and progress set in motion by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government.

“I can say in all good conscience that I have not betrayed the mandate the good people of Ghana conferred on me on two successive occasions.

“All this has been done in part due to the support I have received from you and the Church and, above all due to the grace of Almighty God, through whom I express my deepest gratitude.

“I pray that you continue with the same level of cooperation with my successor, God willing, my Vice President, Alhaji Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, and his dynamic running mate, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, popularly known to all and sundry here in Kumasi as NAPO.”

Bawumia names two ‘failures’ of the Akufo-Addo govt

Vice president and flagbearer of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Bawumia, had a lot to answer during his media engagement on Sunday, August 25, 2025.

The event saw the presence of seasoned journalists from several reputable media houses, such as TV3’s Bella Mundi, GH One’s Natalie Fort and Channel One TV’s Frema Adunyame, among others.

During the question segment, Channel One’s journalist quizzed Dr Bawumia on what he considers the ‘2 failures’ of his current administration and how he’d correct them.

In response, the vice president named the Gold For Oil Policy (G4O) and adequate infrastructure in Senior High School (SHS).

He wished his government had started the G4O policy earlier than its implementation in 2022.

“I wish, for example, we had started the gold purchase much earlier. If we had started it earlier during our first term, for example, the buffer in terms of gold would have been much bigger.

A few years ago we had 8.7 tonnes of gold, and so far they have bought about 72 tonnes or so. It is something that I wish when I sit back and look. I wish we had been able to buy a bit more and start gold for oil and reserve much earlier, but as I said, the crisis made us get into these policies,” he said.

Dr. Bawumia also, highlighted infrastructure development in secondary schools as a significant achievement of his government, claiming it has made considerable strides in Ghana’s education sector since independence.

However, he also admitted challenges in completing certain projects within senior high schools.

While emphasising the overall progress, he acknowledged that some infrastructure initiatives have faced delays, reflecting both the successes and ongoing hurdles in their efforts to improve the educational landscape.

“Even though we’ve built more school infrastructure than any government, I believe that we still had challenges with SHS. i had completed a bit more in terms of accommodation in Senior High Schools (SHS) and dining halls.

This is one of the reasons why I want us to move government expenditure away from government to the private sector. This is a major policy we’re bringing on” he added.

It is written by God, no one can erase that – Prophet Kusi Appiah on Bawumia becoming president

Prophet Kusi Appiah, widely known as the Warrior Prophet of Charisma Temple International Ministry, has predicted a victory for Vice President and flagbearer of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the upcoming 2024 general elections.

During an appearance on Metro TV’s ‘Good Evening Ghana’ with Paul Adom-Otchere, the Prophet declared that Dr. Bawumia’s win in 2024 is divinely ordained and unchangeable.

He emphasised that, according to a revelation from God, Bawumia is destined to be the next president of Ghana.

“Its a done deal, sealed. God has revealed to me that he will be the president, not that I’m on his side. It is something God has written, and no man can erase that,” he said during a discussion on the “spiritual dynamics of the 2024 elections discussion on Metro TV on August 20, 2024.

Touching on the Volta Region, which has gained popularity over the years as a stronghold of the NDC, the Warrior Prophet noted that votes for the NPP would see an increase with Bawumia as the candidate.

However, he predicted that the NPP would lose in the Greater Accra Region, but only by a very small margin.

Dr Bawumia will do well in the Volta Region, where Akufo-Addo and Kuffour couldn’t. The NPP will lose the Greater Accra region by a very slim margin.
NPP will win in the Central Region.

  • I will implement my own policies with full authority and not as an ‘assistant’ – Bawumia

I will implement my own policies with full authority and not as an ‘assistant’ – Bawumia

Vice President and presidential candidate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has clarified his role and responsibilities as Vice President, emphasising that his current role is to support the President’s vision rather than implement his own.

In a recent discussion, Dr. Bawumia addressed questions about why he is not advancing his personal agenda while serving as Vice President. He explained that his position is primarily to assist the President in executing the existing agenda and that he has limited power to pursue independent policies.

Dr. Bawumia highlighted that, should he become President, he will gain the authority to implement his proposed policies fully. To illustrate the constraints of the vice-presidential role, he pointed out that the recent parliamentary budget approval reflects the President’s priorities, not his own.

“The budget that was approved by Parliament went to Parliament in the name of the president, so it is the president’s budget. It is not my budget,” he said.

“That is why I have outlined my own plans and my own vision, which I can implement when I become President with full authority in three months, inshaa Allah.”

Dr Bawumia also asked that if he, who has never been president before, is being asked to implement his vision now as Vice President, then what about former President Mahama, who, even as a former President, wants to come back?

“Why didn’t he do all those things he wants to come back and do when he was president? He has been president before with full authority, and he could have done all the things he is mentioning now.

“I have never been president before, and I have never had full authority before. That is why I have come up with my own new ideas.”

Bawumia schools Mahama on the details of the banking sector clean-up

New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential candidate has taken a strong stand against John Dramani Mahama’s proposal to reinstate the licenses of certain defunct financial institutions.

During the NDC’s manifesto launch in Winneba, Mahama pledged to restore these licenses, alleging they were wrongfully revoked by the NPP administration.

In response, Dr. Bawumia, in a recent media interaction, expressed astonishment at Mahama’s promise.

He argued that the NPP’s interventions were crucial in safeguarding the savings of 4.6 million customers who faced potential losses had the banks not been restructured.

Dr. Bawumia detailed that many of the troubled banks had been involved in serious financial misconduct, including exceeding loan limits, mishandling capital, and misappropriating funds for personal ventures.

He emphasized that these measures were essential to avert a broader financial crisis and maintain stability in the banking sector.

He urged Mahama to review the findings of the Receiver and the Bank of Ghana reports for a comprehensive understanding of the situation before making further statements.

“We saved the deposits of 4.6 million bank depositors who really were going to lose their deposits if those banks were not saved. I don’t understand whether the former president has taken his time to understand the banking sector. Some atrocious things and this is why these banks had to be saved.

“They were not collapsed, they were merged into other banks and no banking depositor lost 1 cedi, everybody maintained. But very bad things happened, some of the banks broke all the rules and extended loans way above the single obligor limits.”

“They were given, in some cases 1 billion by the Bank of Ghana to help them out of the mess and they only got deeper into the situation. Other banks were given capital to save the situation, and they used that money to set up Capital Bank, instead of rescuing the problem that they had. They took the money from the central bank and set up another business which also collapsed. Some took money and invested in private properties.”

“So, it was against this background that the governor came to report, and this was one of my nightmares in the last eight years. Most people didn’t understand how close we were to a collapse of the entire banking system.

This is how we had to merge many of these banking sectors into other banks, and we saved 4.6 million depositors.”

“I’ll ask the former president if he hasn’t read, to go and read the receiver’s report or the BoG’s report and acquaint himself before making any further comments on matters he clearly doesn’t understand.

He needs to get an understanding before making further comments, and he cannot hand over a bank’s license to them, this is subject to legal procedure.

New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has lauded the Gold for Oil programme, calling it a game-changing initiative that averted a potential economic crisis.

He stressed that the programme’s effective implementation was instrumental in safeguarding the nation from financial ruin.

During a media engagement on Sunday, August 25, the NPP’s flagbearer said, “Without the gold purchase programme and the gold for oil programme, this economy would have collapsed.”

In an interview with Citi Business News, Dr. Edwin Alfred Provencal, Managing Director of the Bulk Oil Storage and Transportation Company Limited (BOST), firmly stated that the Gold for Oil initiative has been pivotal in averting potential fuel shortages, akin to the crisis currently unfolding in Nigeria.

Dr. Provencal defended the programme against critics, arguing that its success since launch disproves the doubts of industry skeptics who have suggested its termination.

He emphasized that the initiative has not only stabilized Ghana’s fuel supply but has also played a significant role in bolstering economic growth.

Launched on January 15, 2023, the Gold for Oil Programme commenced with the arrival of its first shipment, consisting of 40,000 metric tonnes of diesel worth $40 million.

The programme’s core objective is to leverage foreign exchange resources from the Bank of Ghana’s Domestic Gold Purchase (DGP) initiative to secure the foreign currency needed to import petroleum products, a cost that currently amounts to approximately $350 million monthly.

Be pragmatic and realistic with some of your promises – Franklin Cudjoe warns Bawumia

President of the policy think tank IMANI Africa, Franklin Cudjoe, has urged the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, to adopt a more realistic and analytical approach to his campaign promises.

During the NPP’s manifesto launch in Takoradi on August 18, Dr. Bawumia vowed to cut transportation costs by 40% through the introduction of electric vehicles.

Speaking on Channel One TV’s The Big Issue, Mr. Cudjoe critically assessed the feasibility of this pledge, raising doubts about the practicality of such a policy.

He highlighted the lack of necessary infrastructure to support electric vehicles, including concerns about maintenance, accessibility, and the readiness of Ghanaians to transition to this new technology.

Mr. Cudjoe also pointed to Dr. Bawumia’s previous unmet promises, such as providing vehicles for Okada riders, suggesting that a more gradual and realistic approach to policy implementation would be more effective.

He advised Dr. Bawumia to consider a balanced energy strategy that includes traditional energy sources alongside clean energy initiatives.

Additionally, Mr. Cudjoe expressed disappointment that the manifesto failed to address the country’s current economic difficulties, questioning the viability of the proposed private sector partnerships as a solution.

“I don’t doubt the fact that we need to move to the electric vehicle system and all that, but do we have the infrastructure yet? How many people can hop on such buses?

Do we have a proper way of maintaining them? I think those little things, if we don’t do them quite well, that’s what will come back and bite Bawumia quite well.”

“You remember when he promised that Okada people were going to be using cars, we haven’t heard anything on that yet and it’s important that he takes baby steps in some of these things. I think he should rather draw on the traditional source of energy rather than this fixation on clean energy or transition element of our energy space.”

I would have wished I heard a lot more on how we can get out of the chaos his administration has led us into, but unfortunately I didn’t hear anything like that so it makes me wonder whether the plan they have in place with private sector side, whether they are going to deliver.”

New Patriotic Party’s flagbearer for the 2024 elections, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has temporarily paused his campaign efforts to rest and prepare for the party’s upcoming manifesto launch this weekend.

  • Galamsey is not something we can stop; youth will be jobless without it – Chief tells Bawumia

Galamsey is not something we can stop; youth will be jobless without it – Chief tells Bawumia

Chief of Akyem Wenchi and Oseawuohene in the Eastern Region, Daasebre Dr. Asumadu Appiah, has openly acknowledged that efforts to eliminate illegal mining, or “galamsey,” in Wenchi and its surrounding areas are likely to be unsuccessful.

He explained that galamsey serves as the primary source of employment for the youth in the region, making it challenging to eradicate the practice without offering viable alternative livelihoods.

Instead of an outright ban, Daasebre Asumadu Appiah proposed the introduction of a more regulated community mining scheme. He argued that this approach would allow the government to generate revenue from the activity while ensuring environmental protection.

The chief also emphasized the need for traditional leaders (Nananom) to be more involved in the management of natural resources. He criticized the current system, where mining leases and permits are granted by the central government in Accra without proper consultation with local chiefs.

He called for a revision of this practice, advocating for traditional authorities to have a greater say in decisions impacting their lands.

Daasebre Asumadu Appiah made these comments during a visit from NPP flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who called on him at his palace in Akyem Wenchi as part of his campaign tour in the Eastern Region.

“We don’t have any job opportunities within our community; the only job here is galamsey. As for the galamsey, it is not something we can stop if you tell us to stop. So all we asking is that you give us good policies and guidelines to do it. That is all we are asking from you that bring us those policies. You guys have said we should do community mining so for instance, I have sent an application to the district to do it.”

Dr Bawumia emphasized the importance of protecting the environment and stated that his administration plans to focus on promoting community mining schemes, including the implementation of a more flexible licensing process for these activities.

The Vice President also assured that traditional authorities would play active roles in the management and allocation of mining concessions.

“I think we haven’t gotten it right. For me, I think we should help small-scale mining and if we can do it well, galamsey will also do well. We need a licensing regime to make it easy so that people can acquire the license to work,” Dr Bawumia said.

More Bawumia promises; as the veep promises farmers with tractors

Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has promised to support Ghanaian farmers with tractors and credit facilities to boost productivity and lower food prices.

Speaking at a campaign rally in Wa East, Dr. Bawumia highlighted the vital role of farming in ensuring food security and affordability.

He stressed that enhancing agricultural productivity is key to reducing food prices and committed to providing farmers with the necessary resources to increase their yields.

Dr. Bawumia drew comparisons with Brazil and China, noting that farmers in these countries produce 10 and 12 tons of maize per acre, respectively, whereas Ghana’s average yield is only four tons per acre.

To address this disparity, he pledged to introduce advanced farming techniques from Brazil and China to Ghanaian farmers.

Furthermore, Dr. Bawumia announced plans to establish “super aggregators” who will buy produce directly from farmers, ensuring fair prices and reducing post-harvest losses.

He also emphasized the importance of using lime fertilizers to improve soil fertility, highlighting Ghana’s abundant lime deposits.

“I want to support our farmers. Farming is key to reducing food prices, and we will help farmers increase their productivity. In Brazil, maize yields can reach 10 tons per acre, and in China, 12 tons, but in Ghana, we only get four tons.

“We will apply the successful practices from Brazil and China to our farmers in the Wa East District to boost productivity.”

“We will establish super aggregators to buy produce from farmers, preventing waste and ensuring fair prices for their goods.

“We will also provide farmers with tractors and credit to aid in harvesting. Additionally, we will shift from using traditional fertilizers to lime, as lime significantly enhances soil fertility. Ghana has ample lime resources, and we will help our farmers utilize this resource effectively,” he said.

‘Kick me out after 4 years’ – ‘The driver-mate’ slogan – Akufo-Addo’s 2016 ‘begging’ post surfaces

As the December 7, 2024, general elections approach, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, also the NPP’s flagbearer, has drawn significant online attention with his recent comments about the polls.

On Saturday, July 13, 2024, while addressing a gathering in Nanung, a community in northern Ghana, Bawumia urged Ghanaians to vote for him to become president. He added that if he fails to meet their expectations, they can reject him when he seeks a second term.

“I am the Vice President; I’ve not been president yet and I want to plead with you. I am going to the contest with my senior, John Mahama; he has been president before, and when he comes, he has only four years.

“When I come, I have eight years, so, if you look at the presidency, do we want four years or eight? After four years, he won’t come but I will come for renewal, so please give me the chance so that I can be accountable,” he is reported to have said.

However, this is not the first time such words have been spoken. To remind Ghanaians of a similar moment, an old Facebook post by Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, made when he was the NPP’s flagbearer, quickly resurfaced online.

The post, dated February 22, 2016, reads: “This year, try me too. Give me the chance to show you what I can do. Four years is not so far away. If I come and I don’t succeed, kick me out. God knows my heart and I can assure you that I won’t disappoint you. Progress and prosperity are what I am offering the people of Ghana.”

Akufo-Addo made these remarks while addressing a group of Muslim clerics and chiefs from settler communities in Derma, located in the Tano South Constituency of the Brong Ahafo Region.

Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has asserted his role as Ghana’s most impactful vice president since independence during the unveiling ceremony of his running mate, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh (NAPO), in Kumasi.

He underscored his administration’s achievements and forward-looking leadership, framing the upcoming 2024 election as a pivotal choice between continuity of progress and regression.

“The choice is between the future and the past. He [Mahama] has been president before and he failed. I’m just a vice president, I’ve not been a president before, but everyone can attest that I’ve been the most effective vice president in the history of Ghana.

“Even the NDC know that. There’s been no hard-working vice president than me since independence. So the 2024 election is about going forward or backwards.”

At his unveiling ceremony in Kumasi, NAPO praised President Akufo-Addo’s transformative leadership and highlighted his administration’s significant development initiatives.

“Since independence from 1957 till today, we’ve not had any president that has helped Ghana like Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. I say from 1957 to now if you take your Kwame Nkrumah, no one has become president who has protected Ghana and moved it forward like Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo,” NAPO stated.

He stressed that under President Akufo-Addo’s leadership, Ghana has seen substantial progress in various sectors, including education, healthcare, infrastructure, and the economy.

“You were the one we were looking for” – Kwabre East NPP members to Kennedy Agyapong

Member of Parliament for Assin North, Kennedy Agyapong, during a recent visit to the Ashanti Region to help in Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia’s campaign, had a confrontation with New Patriotic Party (NPP) members.

In a widely circulated video on social media, Agyapong can be seen seated in the front of his car in the Kwabre East constituency, while individuals believed to be his backers expressed discontent over the region’s developmental shortcomings.

“Since 1992, we have voted for the NPP but haven’t benefited in any meaningful way,” one said before another joined: “You are the very one that we want.

We will die of hunger if you leave us behind; we will suffer.”

“If we vote NDC and they don’t develop this area, it is no news; but to vote NPP and suffer such neglect is unfair for an area said to be a municipality; what is the evidence?” another asked.

The NPP considers the Ashanti Region a stronghold crucial for securing sufficient votes to surpass the 8.

Vice President Bawumia, the NPP’s 2024 presidential candidate, concluded a successful three-day campaign tour of the region.

Bawumia emerged victorious in the NPP flagbearership contest late last year, prevailing over Agyapong and other contenders.

No matter the economic hardship, I will still vote for Bawumia, – Street vendor

A street vendor has risen to the defence of the Akufo-Addo-Bawumia-led government amid the blame of the country’s woes and economic hardship on the former.

In a tweet by @eddie_wrt, a street vendor, in an interview on the harsh economic conditions faced by the Ghanaian populace and how it will alter their choice of candidates ahead of the 2024 polls, the young man has taken a strong stance to vote for the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) candidate, Dr. Bwumia, in December.

The policies of the vice president, who doubles as the flagbearer of the NPP, have benefited him, hence his decision to vote for him in the forthcoming elections.

He believes the state of the economy induced by many factors, such as increase in the price of goods and services, is the doing of traders and not that of the government.

“This year, Bawumia, all the way. This year, my household’s vote belongs to Bawumia. When he came, I enjoyed the benefits of his policies so he has my vote this year despite the economic hardships.

You blame Akufo-Addo for the increase in goods, but our own doing is our fault, we the sellers. You are blaming Akufo-Addo; does Akufo-Addo run your shop for you?

Isn’t it you doing that. Cut that talk. It’s our own doing. Akufo-Addo hasn’t been spotted selling diesel at a fuel station,” he said.

  • Bawumia running mate: Frema, Adutwum out of league; good news for NAPO?

Bawumia running mate: Frema, Adutwum out of league; good news for NAPO?

Vice President and New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer Mahamudu Bawumia has chosen his running mate for the 2024 general election.

The selected candidate’s name will be submitted to the NPP National Council for approval before Bawumia makes an official announcement.

MyNewsGh.com citing deep-throat sources said in the next few days, “the NPP flagbearer will be submitting the name of the lucky nominee to the National Council of the party for deliberation.”

The report added: “While the name of the nominee is kept top-secret, the names of those not on the list are known.

“Contrary to earlier reports of the shortlist including influential church leader Apostle Opoku Onyinah, checks show he was not under consideration.”

MyNewsgh.com reported that prominent figures such as Chief of Staff Frema Opare and Education Minister Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, who were rumored to be leading contenders for the position, have not been nominated as running mates for Mahamudu Bawumia in the upcoming 2024 general election.

After securing the NPP flagbearership, Bawumia requested additional time from the National Council to announce his running mate, emphasizing the importance of extensive consultations with key stakeholders.

With the exclusion of Onyinah, Frema, and Adutwum, analysts suggest that the path is now clear for Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the Member of Parliament for Manhyia South, to be named as the running mate.

The Ashanti Region, a stronghold for the NPP, is considered crucial for winning the 2024 election.

Consequently, selecting a running mate from this region has gained significant traction since Bawumia’s election as flagbearer.
