NPP primaries: Buwumia receives massive support from Oti Region

A large gathering of enthusiastic NPP delegates and party supporters warmly welcomed Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as he began his tour of the Oti Region.

Fresh from his resounding victory at the NPP Super Delegates Conference, various NPP stakeholders, including polling station executives, electoral area coordinators, constituency executives, Council of Elders members, and party supporters from Buem, Guan, and Nkawanta constituencies, came out in force to greet Dr. Bawumia as he resumed his engagement with delegates at the constituency level.

Notably, in the Guan constituency, where Dr. Bawumia initiated his tour, the Constituency Chairman, Daniel Kudjo Aidoo, along with party leaders from the constituency, publicly declared their unanimous support for Dr. Bawumia’s leadership in the upcoming elections.

“What I’m coming to say here, is not from me, but from all of us,” the Chairman said.

“I have had a meeting with the patrons, the council of elders all the coordinators and executives. What we are saying is that, we have resolved and we are all going to vote for Dr. Bawumia.

“What I am saying is it is not from me but from all of us. We are all human beings here and I cannot give the Vice President 100%. There may be some people who may spoil the vote; you cannot tell so I cannot give him 100%. But I can give him 99%”, he added.

In Buem constituency, the Chairman, Arnold K. Agble, spoke on behalf of the constituency stakeholders and declared their support for Dr. Bawumia.

He also commended the Vice President for his dedication to public service and the NPP party.

“Dr. Bawumia is a real party man who has dedicated his entire life to public service,” he stated.

He continued; “The road to the presidency requires is a challenging one. It requires one with a strong commitment to the people and deep understanding of issues facing people and the nation and the ability to take bold decisions to create a better future for all of us.”

“It is on record that Dr. Bawumia is the most competent, humble, innovative, creative, affable and hardworking Vice President Ghana has ever hard since independence,” the Guan constituency Chairman added.

The situation remained consistent for Dr. Bawumia in the Akan constituency. The Constituency Chairman, Larry Yaw Osei, likewise affirmed the constituency’s intention to honor Dr. Bawumia for his dedicated efforts during the November 4th election.

The Vice President secured victory in the recent NPP Super Delegates Congress, where 5 out of the 10 candidates vying for the NPP flagbearership were chosen for the forthcoming final congress in November.

He garnered more than two-thirds of the votes, leaving his nearest rivals significantly behind in the race.

The Vice President is strongly favored to secure the NPP’s nomination for the upcoming election, thanks to the overwhelming support he has garnered across all levels of the party.

  • Russia-Ukraine war comes nowhere close to NPP super delegates elections

Russia-Ukraine war comes nowhere close to NPP super delegates elections

The Director of Elections and IT at the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, has likened the recent super delegates conference of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to a conflict more intense than the Russia invasion of Ukraine.

This comparison comes as a response to the widespread violence that marred the elections in various regions of the country.

In a tweet, Dr. Boamah stated ” “NPP super delegates elections worse than Russia-Ukraine war”.

Former President John Dramani Mahama also weighed in on the matter, urging responsible and concerned Ghanaians to denounce the acts of aggression.

Former President Mahama voiced his astonishment at the escalation of violence within an internal competition. He connected this disturbing trend to the legacy of President Akufo-Addo and Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

Particularly, he recalled the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election violence and the tragic election-related fatalities of eight Ghanaians in 2020.

Through a series of tweets following the ruling party’s polling to select five candidates out of ten aspirants for the upcoming November Presidential Primary, the 2024 flagbearer of the NDC underscored his concern.

The polling on August 26th was marred by attacks on opponents. For instance, in the North East Region, a polling station agent of Alan Kyerematen, Ali Zakaria, sustained injuries from an attack, resulting in swollen eyes.

Furthermore, an agent representing Ken Agyapong in the Upper West Region allegedly had to flee the voting center due to threats, provoking the ire of the Assin Central lawmaker.

These incidents prompted Mr. Mahama to call for condemnation, as the electoral process should have taken place peacefully.

He lamented that violence has become the norm within the NPP, and emphasized the importance of denouncing such aggression, especially within an internal contest among members of the same party.

The NPP is set to choose its 2024 flagbearer from candidates including Dr. Bawumia, Mr. Kyerematen, Mr. Agyapong, Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto, and Boakye Agyarko or Francis Addai-Nimoh.

The selected candidate will face off against John Dramani Mahama in the upcoming elections.

Protect airport lands – Bawumia to Mgt of GACL, Lands Commission

Vice president, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has expressed deep concern over the widespread encroachment on airport lands, cautioning that such actions pose a serious threat to the future expansion of Ghana’s airports.

He emphasized that these encroachments could also impede potential rescue efforts in the unlikely event of an accident.

Dr. Bawumia has called upon relevant authorities, particularly the Ghana Airport Company Limited (GACL) and the Lands Commission, to take the necessary measures to safeguard airport lands for future expansion projects.

“The operators and regulators of our airports, as well as, the Lands Commission need to work closely together to ensure that airport lands are properly protected and well managed not only for future airport expansion but also to safeguard lives and property in the unlikely event of an accident occurring at or around the airport enclave.

“I therefore charge the authorities involved to enforce the law and I also entreat all citizens to cooperate for us to fully benefit from the development of the aviation sector,” he said after commissioning the Tamale International Airport Phase II Project at a colourful ceremony in the Northern Regional capital on Tuesday, August 22, 2023,” he added.

During the inauguration of the Tamale International Airport Phase II Project, which took place in the Northern Regional capital on August 22, 2023, Dr. Bawumia expressed his satisfaction with the completion of the project. The groundbreaking for this project had occurred on August 15, 2019.

Highlighting the significance of the project, he remarked, “This project holds great importance for the government, particularly the hardworking people of the Northern Region and their trade partners across the country and the Sub-Region.”

The newly completed phase of the airport features an expansive ultra-modern terminal building spanning approximately 5,000 square meters, designed to accommodate an annual passenger throughput of 400,000.

Other additions include a versatile multi-purpose terminal (Hajj Facility), a 5-kilometer single carriageway access road, a 330-capacity car park, and a technical hub for electricity and waste water management, among other facilities.

The terminal building boasts various amenities including a VIP lounge, boarding gates, self-service check-in kiosks, check-in desks, airline offices, and commercial retail areas.

The Vice President stressed the importance of the Tamale International Airport’s role as an alternative to the Kotoka International Airport and as a catalyst for regional economic growth, particularly in agriculture and tourism.

He also highlighted the potential for supporting the Northern Development Authority’s programs, boosting agro-based industries, and attracting investment in aviation-related enterprises.

“This project is so dear to the Government and particularly the hard-working people of the Northern Region and its trading partners across the length and breadth of the country and the Sub-Region,” Dr Bawumia stated at the Commissioning, held on Tuesday, August 22, 2023.

“The completion of this ultra-modern terminal building together with a multi-purpose Terminal and other ancillary facilities are expected to provide the needed impetus for increased economic trading activities and to re-inforce the status of Tamale as a Sub-Saharan Hub Airport for flights to and from neigbouring West African countries and the Sahel Region.

“The Tamale International Airport will serve as an alternative to the Kotoka International Airport,” he added.

Additionally, the expansion of the airport is expected to streamline travel for the annual pilgrimage to Mecca for Muslims, positioning Tamale as a Hajj hub in Ghana.

Transport Minister, Kwaku Ofori Asiamah encouraged airline operators to capitalize on Ghana’s expanding aviation infrastructure, promising an unparalleled travel experience to and within the country.

“Significantly, it is also expected that the Tamale International Airport will make Tamale the Hajj hub in Ghana and facilitate seamless travel directly to Saudi Arabia for the seasonal pilgrimage to Mecca. It is gratifying to note that the multi-Purpose Terminal, which was completed in 2022, has been used in facilitating Hajj Pilgrims in 2022 and 2023.

  • NDC communicator blames Ghana’s economic woes on Bawumia, Ofori Atta and Akufo-Addo

NDC communicator blames Ghana’s economic woes on Bawumia, Ofori Atta and Akufo-Addo

A member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) communication team,
Solomon Anane has pointed fingers at three influential figures, attributing Ghana’s ongoing economic hardships to their actions.

Anane asserted that these individuals, despite their perceived role in exacerbating the nation’s struggles, have remained untouchable due to their close ties to President Nana Addo-Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

The individuals he identified were Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the head of the economic management team, Ken Ofori-Atta, the Minister of Finance, and Ernest Addison, the governor of the Bank of Ghana.

Speaking on a panel discussion on Hello FM’s Akoko Abon on August 13, 2023, he emphasised that these three figures were instrumental in causing the economic challenges currently faced by Ghanaians.

“I have written something here about three specific people who are behind our struggles as Ghanaians. The first is Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, the head of economic management, who is one of the reasons why we, as Ghanaians, are suffering.

“The second person is the finance minister, who is in control of our country’s finances, but do not touch him, my anointed; if you touch him, trouble will follow…If Nana Addo-Dankwa Akufo-Addo sacks his finance minister or Ghana’s Bank governor, he will rather sack his beloved wife and force her to leave since such people are not touched.

“Ernest Addison, the governor of the Bank of Ghana, is now also a member…and these three people are the source of our sorrows and struggles in our country as Ghanaians.”

Ghana is grappling with economic challenges as its national currency, the cedi, faces a tough battle against the US dollar.

To address the pressing issues at hand, the country has successfully secured a $3 billion bailout package from the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

The funds are intended to provide a much-needed boost to the economy and steer it back on track.

  • ‘ONE CONSTITUENCY 10 APPOINTMENTS: Bawumia unveils policy

‘ONE CONSTITUENCY 10 APPOINTMENTS: Bawumia unveils policy

Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has unveiled his “One Constituency 10 Appointments Policy,” which aims to address the longstanding issue of neglecting constituencies during government appointments in Ghana.

During a meeting with delegates from the Awutu Senya East constituency, Vice President Bawumia expressed concerns raised by party loyalists who felt excluded from the governance processes after the party came to power.

To foster better integration between the party and the government, he proposed three initiatives, the first being the appointment process.

Under this policy, all 275 constituencies in Ghana will be given the opportunity to have a representative on various government boards and agencies. Currently, a president can make approximately 7000 appointments. With the addition of one more constituency next year, the total number of constituencies will be 276. The Vice President’s plan is to allocate 10 appointments to each constituency, resulting in a total of 2760 appointments for all constituencies.

By implementing this policy, Vice President Bawumia aims to ensure that no constituency is left out and that party loyalists from every region have a fair chance to participate in the governance of the country.

“Party loyalists tell me that when the party is voted into power to form a government, they are left out
in the processes of governance. That is why I’m coming up with three initiatives which I believe that if effectively utilised the party and the government will be well integrated. The first one is appointment. Anytime there are appointments, the constituencies normally say they have been left out.”

“So what I will do is that in governance, a president can make about 7000 appointments, and we have 275 constituencies which we will add one more next year to make them 276, so my plan is that some of the 7000 appointees can come from the constituencies. My proposal is that one constituency, 10 appointments. Doing that will ensure that all the constituencies will have a total of 2760 appointmet,” Dr Bawumia stated.

  • Ghana’s digitization efforts have increased revenues and tackled corruption – Bawumia

Ghana’s digitization efforts have increased revenues and tackled corruption – Bawumia

Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has lauded the positive outcomes of Ghana’s digital transformation, highlighting remarkable increases in annual revenues for key agencies.

Speaking at the National Development Conference themed “Moral Vision and National Development,” Dr. Bawumia emphasized that digitization has significantly curbed corruption.

He revealed that the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) saw a substantial surge in annual revenue, rising from 450 million cedis to an impressive 1.2 million cedis, after adopting digital practices.

Similarly, the passport office experienced a remarkable transformation, with its revenue escalating from 1 million cedis to an impressive 64 million cedis.

Dr. Bawumia attributed these success stories to the government’s digitization agenda, which has substantially improved efficiency and transparency within these agencies.

“In times past, it used to be easy to lie about your age and get away with it, particularly in the government sector. At the port, for instance, we have introduced the paperless system, and this came with resistance. Some of the custom officers organized demonstrations against the move, but we were firm on our stance. Today, at the offices of ECG, you can buy your credit without any challenges.”

“The challenges with ECG initially were that the revenues of ECG were constant and the values were the same. We looked at the architecture of revenue of ECG and we changed it. They were collecting 450 million cedis a month as revenue. We sent in a team to work on their system. There were sabotage attempts, such as people sending viruses into the system to destroy our work, but we were resilient and brought in a whole new architecture for ECG. Today, they make over 1 million cedis as revenues monthly. The same happened at the passport office, which was making 1 million cedis to over 65 million cedis,” he added.

He noted that the ECG’s revenue used to remain stagnant despite an increasing customer base, but with the digitization efforts, monthly revenues have soared significantly.

The passport office also witnessed a dramatic revenue boost due to the adoption of digital processes.

Dr. Bawumia mentioned that initially, there were challenges and resistance to the digitization efforts, but the government remained firm in its stance, leading to remarkable results.

“As Ghanaians, we have thrown away our values. Today, our cities are so dirty. When we were children and growing up, we used to wake up early in the morning and sweep our compounds. But today, that is not the case. Today, society is not concerned about how we make money and the manner in which we make them. Greed and theft have taken over our space, and people who are engaged in that are celebrated, yet society is not concerned.”

Former Presidents, John Agyekum Kufuor and John Dramani Mahama also addressed the conference, emphasizing the importance of preserving African values.

Former President Mahama expressed concerns about the erosion of traditional values and the adoption of foreign cultures, urging Ghanaians to uphold essential Ghanaian values in society.

Former President Kufuor emphasized the significance of morality in Ghanaian society and called for its integration into development pursuits, irrespective of backgrounds or ideologies.

Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo also stressed the need for justice to prevail in all aspects of Ghanaian life to ensure peaceful coexistence among diverse individuals.

Meanwhile, Chairman of the Church of Pentecost, Apostle Eric Nyamekye, emphasized the urgency of tackling corruption through robust legislation and by fostering a culture of integrity and competence within the nation. He highlighted the need to address corruption comprehensively to achieve lasting progress.

    FLASHBACK: Kennedy Agyapong lauds Bawumia

An old video featuring presidential candidate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kennedy Agyapong, has surfaced, where he is seen showering praises on the brilliance of Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

Kennedy Agyapong, who is vying for the NPP flagbearer position along with nine other aspirants for the upcoming elections, had predominantly centered his campaign on criticizing the Vice President.

However, last week, after indirectly criticizing Dr. Bawumia for the recent depreciation of the Cedi, an old video resurfaced, displaying Kennedy Agyapong absolving Dr. Bawumia of blame.

As the Assin North MP intensifies his campaign, another throwback video has emerged, where he lauds the performance of Vice Presidents in the 4th Republic.

In the video, Kennedy Agyapong discusses the effectiveness of Vice Presidents under various regimes and highlights Dr. Bawumia’s exceptional brilliance and capabilities.

He attributes this effectiveness to both Dr. Bawumia’s natural abilities and the leadership style of President Akufo-Addo, which has allowed him to shine.

“I want Ghanaians to understand that it is not every President that allows their Vice Presidents to shine. It is Akufo-Addo’s style of government managing the country that has allowed the Vice President,” said Kennedy Agyepong in 2021.

He added: “But Dr Bawumia himself is naturally good. If he was like Mahama, he would have been ineffective.”

In the 2021 video, Kennedy Agyapong emphasizes that not all Presidents give their Vice Presidents the opportunity to excel, but President Akufo-Addo’s management style has allowed Dr. Bawumia to showcase his brilliance.

He further contrasts Dr. Bawumia’s competence with that of former Vice President Mahama, suggesting that the latter might have been less effective in a similar role.

These videos showcasing Kennedy Agyapong praising Vice President Bawumia and acknowledging his competence stand in stark contrast to his recent campaign messages, which have been critical of the Vice President.

  • NDC ‘army’ exposed for sponsoring #Bawuliar on social media

NDC ‘army’ exposed for sponsoring #Bawuliar on social media

Prior to the 2016 election, Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia gained notoriety for using the word “incompetent.” This was true even though the criticism was intended at the administration of the previous president, John Dramani Mahama.

As the years pass, Bawumia is dealing with a similar situation of offensive branding, which is mostly being done by pro-opposition activists on the social media site Twitter.

Senior members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) have repeatedly called Bawumia a liar in media interviews and online postings.

According to a report on the #Bawuliar hashtag, among other things, the trends were primarily unnatural and resulted from a spike in NDC activists’ engagement on Twitter.

Additionally, it was discovered that Sammy Gyamfi, the NDC’s national communications officer, was a significant contributor to the #Bawuliar tweets that became popular, the majority of which were started after Bawumia delivered a significant economic declaration or address.

The most recent occurred when Bawumia declared his intention to run for president of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

    Findings from Kwetey Nartey’s analysis

A media journalist, Kwetey Nartey, undertook an analysis on the trend and discovered, among other things, that while the terms “Bawuliar” and “#Bawuliar” were first used in 2016, their use for political involvement only began in February of last year.

“Criticisms which started as an organic onslaught on Dr. Bawumia’s credibility on the streets and in the mass media, gained traction in social media circles with the hashtag #Bawuliar.

“During the investigation, we observed that almost every comment the Vice President made about the economy was met with a spike in #Bawuliar tweets,” his report read in part.

The analysis pinpointed the leading accounts, influencers, and boosters of the #Bawuliar trend whenever it is used, typically following a significant economic announcement from the Vice President.

Nartey also discovered through analysis that the cut-and-paste postings, which indicated that they were coordinated and cranked up to achieve a specific result, were at the root of the trend’s inorganic nature.

It mentions how the NDC Twitter army appropriated the hashtag #BawumiaNeverLies when pro-government activists attempted to fight the #Bawuliar trends.

“#Bawumianeverlies first emerged on 22 April 2022 in @kingkobby_gh’s reply to @Yabbanx’s tweet about the use of drones to deliver blood to save lives being a manifestation of the vision of President Akufo Addo and Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

“#Bawumianeverlies was supposed to be a counter to #Bawuliar. However, #Bawumianeverlies was hijacked by pro-NDC Twitter accounts to drive the narrative that Dr. Bawumia had failed to deliver on his promises, suggesting that he had been dishonest. 16 accounts used the copy-paste technique coordinatedly amplify tweets about Dr. Bawumia’s supposed failed promises,” the report added.

    The verdict

The journalist concluded that even though government and Bawumia specifically has come under sustained critique by people in opposition and the civil society space, which critique are organic, “the NDC has taken advantage of these sentiments and branded the Vice President as a liar for political gains.

“The coordinated sharing of #Bawuliar tweets by 28 accounts using the copy-paste technique shows an aggressive move to exaggerate and entrench the “liar” narrative.”

“Whilst the Vice President may indeed be facing a credibility deficit, #Bawuliar is an inorganic trend that exaggerates the existence of narrative,” he added.

Bawumia is unconcerned about Special Flagbearer Election being centralized or not – Spokesperson

Spokesperson for Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia‘s Campaign, Miracles Dennis Aboagye, has clarified that the Vice President is not opposing the petition from the remaining nine flagbearer hopefuls of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to centralize the special delegates’ congress scheduled for August 26th.

During an interview with the media, Mr. Aboagye stated that Dr. Bawumia remains indifferent to the matter and will honor whatever decision the party’s National Council arrives at.

“The Vice President’s position is to accede to whatever guidelines and decision that the National Council will come up with. The Vice President is indifferent,” he stated.

As a member of the National Council, the Vice President cannot simultaneously act as a “referee” and a “player” in the decision-making process, ensuring the right course of action is followed.

Mr. Aboagye emphasized that Dr. Bawumia’s primary focus is on communicating his message to the delegates and polling station executives, rejecting any involvement in propaganda aimed at discrediting his candidacy or message.

“Once you begin to say that the party must take a decision according to how you feel, you begin to create problems for the party, which has the potential of disorganizing the party,” he added.

He added that the Vice President avoids engaging in discussions that may lead to insinuations and name-calling, dismissing any attempts to label his supporters as cowards.

“These are issues that Dr. Bawumia does not want to discuss because he is busy with the delegates and the polling station executives. He is not ready to engage in casting insinuations and name-calling, and this issue of trying to say that anyone following the Vice President is a coward is laughable,” he added.

  • NPP flagbearer race: Petition to centralise Special Delegates Conference dismissed

NPP flagbearer race: Petition to centralise Special Delegates Conference dismissed

On Thursday, July 20, the National Council of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) held a crucial meeting at the Alisa Hotel and unanimously rejected a petition from nine aspirants seeking a centralized venue for the party’s Special Delegates Conference.

The petitioners wanted the number of presidential aspirants, currently scheduled for Saturday, August 26, to be reduced to a central location.

The National Council cited the party’s constitution and a precedent set in 2014 as crucial factors that needed to be respected.

The General Secretary of the party, Justin Kodua Frimpong, addressed journalists and announced that the NPP would proceed with its initially planned decentralization for the election.

The NPP’s constitution states that if there are more than five aspirants after the nomination and vetting process, a special delegates college should be held to reduce the number of candidates to five. The vetting committee had submitted their recommendations to the National Council, which was unanimously approved.

The nine flagbearer hopefuls, excluding Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, argued that a centralized election would be more efficient and transparent. They were not in favor of the plan to limit the voting to only 900 delegates at the regional level.

Despite their arguments, the National Council, which is the second highest decision-making body of the party, did not support their petition. As a result, the NPP will proceed with its plan to trim the list of presidential aspirants from ten to five on August 26, in accordance with its constitution.

Before the election, the party stated that a new register would be necessary to remove the names of delegates who have passed away or are no longer available to participate. General Secretary Justin Koduah assured that the new register would be finalized by the end of the week, and it would comprise between 900 and 1,000 delegates. This registration process aims to ensure a fair and accurate electoral college for the special delegates’ election.

NPP would have lost 2016 elections if not for Bawumia – Dr Stephen Amoah

Deputy Minister for Trade and Industry, Dr. Stephen Amoah, has given credits to Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia for preventing the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) loss in the 2016 presidential election.

He attributes the party’s victory to Bawumia’s contributions, particularly in the 2012 election petition.

Dr. Amoah refutes claims that Bawumia is not an NPP member and emphasizes his significant efforts for the party.

“What made me like Bawumia is just one thing. I remember when we went to the Supreme Court, one day we were only 21 in court and the vice president was in the witness box and was being bombarded with questions.

“…. if not for Dr Alhaji Mahamudu Bawumia, we would not have won the first election that we won (the 2016 elections). He was the one who explained issues for us to get clarity (in the 2012 election petition).

“What he went through made NPP ready for the subsequent election which we won. But today, people are saying he is not a number of the party,” Dr Amoah said in Twi as he was addressing members of the NPP at a campaign event for the vice president.

Dr. Stephen Amoah, the Deputy Minister for Trade and Industry and MP for Nhyiaeso, asserts that although all NPP flagbearer hopefuls are qualified, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is the best candidate.

He urges supporters of all contenders to avoid politics of insults and tribalism, aiming to keep the party united after the presidential primaries.

Ten candidates will compete in the NPP presidential primaries scheduled for August and November 2023. A super delegate conference in August 2023 will reduce the contenders to five, with the proper primaries taking place in November 2023 to select the party’s presidential candidate for the 2024 elections.

The candidates include Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, former Trade Minister Alan Kyerematen, energy expert Kwadwo Poku, Attorney General and Minister of Justice Joe Ghartey, former Minister of Food and Agriculture Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto, former General Secretary of the NPP Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, MP for Assin Central Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, former MP for Offinso North Dr. Kofi Konadu Apraku, and former Energy Minister Boakye Agyarko.

Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has emphasized the importance of selecting a leader who is dedicated to the welfare of the people and capable of ensuring the New Patriotic Party (NPP) remains in power during the 2024 general elections.

Addressing the NPP delegates, Dr. Bawumia stressed the paramountcy of maintaining political authority, stating that the party needs a leader who prioritizes the greater good rather than personal wealth.

He emphasized the significance of leadership experience and a proven track record in governance, highlighting the party’s need for a candidate who can bring innovative ideas to foster the country’s growth.

Dr. Bawumia highlighted his political background in his campaign against John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

He emphasizes that he has emerged victorious against the former president on two separate occasions, instilling him with the confidence to secure another triumph in the upcoming 2024 elections.

“As we go for the presidential primaries, we need someone who can help us retain. We need someone who has humility. We need someone who has a track record. We need someone who has the temperament. We need someone who has innovative ideas and has tolerance for everyone,” Dr. Bawumia said.

With this clearance, all ten candidates are now permitted to commence their preparations for the Super Delegates Congress of the NPP. During this congress, the field will be narrowed down to only five candidates.

The final list of these five candidates will then be presented to the delegates, who will cast their votes to choose the NPP’s presidential candidate for the upcoming 2024 general elections.

Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who was in the constituency to meet party delegates before the party’s Presidential primary, praised the Member of Parliament for the efforts he has put into constructing the office for the party in the constituency during a brief ceremony to cut the tape to officially open the office.

“It consists of the chairman’s office, the secretary’s office and a 120-seater capacity auditorium for meetings involving large numbers.”

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia previously held a separate meeting with party representatives.

He urged them to support him in the next party presidential primaries, claiming that he was the greatest candidate to “break the 8” for the group.

The NPP has scheduled its presidential primaries for November 4. Ten candidates have so far submitted their nominations to run for the position. The party will have a special delegate conference on August 26, 2023, to choose the five candidates who will compete in the presidential primary on November 4.

Dr. Bawumia listed a variety of factors that he believes make him the ideal candidate to lead the party to victory in the general elections in 2024.

“The nature of our road seems to erode the gains we have made in this constituency in terms of schools, health facilities and electricity extension. Most of the roads here are cocoa roads, Government of Ghana and Synohydro-sponsored but the contractors apart from Joshob is not on site”.

He acknowledged having productive conversations with Dr. Bawumia and gave the promise that the contractors will soon arrive on site.

  • It’s easier for NDC to destroy Kennedy Agyapong – Maurice Ampaw makes a case for Bawumia

Private legal Practitioner Lawyer Maurice has thrown his weight behind Vice President Dr Mahamadu Bawumia for the upcoming flagbearer election of the New Patriotic Party(NPP) in August.

The two other leading candidates namely Alan Kyerematen and Kennedy Ohene Agyapong are much easy targets for the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), the firebrand lawyer says.

“Kennedy Agyapong has a lot of dossier that the NDC can use against him and so the NDC is only focused on attacking Bawumia who poses serious threat him.”

According to him, Bawumia will remove Akufo-Addo loyalists from positions of power when elected, likening what is to come, to how the late John Fiifi Atta Mills, allegedly sidelined members of his own party, upon assuming office in 2009.

“I see Bawumia as someone who is bringing good luck to Ghana, his government will be Bawumia’s government and not Nana Akufo-Addo’s government and Bawumia will sack all Nana Addo’s people from his side, all Nana Addo’s people will go away, all of them will expire when Bawumia comes, he will be like Atta Mills, do you remember what Atta Mill’s did to Rawlings, the same way that he will do,” he said.

Speaking in an interview with Okay FM, on July 9, 2023, he stressed the significance of electing a Muslim president from the Northern Region of Ghana. He argued that previous administrations led by Christians had let down the nation, accusing them of engaging in corruption and unethical practice as a result, he contended that it was time to break the cycle and embrace a leader from a different religious background.

“When Bawumia comes we will make history, for the first time, we will get someone who is a Muslim and lives in the North. We have tried Christians who have disappointed us, using the name of Jesus Christ, they will be stealing, taking bribes and all, so, we are tired of the Christians.”

“The yeoman’s job you’re doing and undertaking for and on behalf of the head of state, it’s no joke, it’s no mean task at all, and I can confirm to you over here that Nananom in the Ashanti Region, those of us in the Ashanti Regional House of Chiefs we do appreciate and admire you.”

“Anytime we see you on TV, immediately what comes to mind is “yes here comes the chief exponent and proponent of governmental economic policies and principles,” he said.

The Chief continued by saying that Dr. Bawumia is especially highly valued for his ability to convert abstract concepts into real-world applications and for speaking at several national and international fora and seminars on economic topics.

The Paramount Chief’s support comes at a time when Dr. Bawumia is competing for the party’s flagbearership against strong opponents including Alan Kyeremanten and unconventional Member of Parliament for Assin Central Kennedy Ohene Agyapong.

Bawumia shows love to footballers by defying torrential rains to shake them

In a remarkable display of unwavering commitment, Vice President Dr. Alhaji Mahamudu Bawumia and some NPP executives braved through torrential rains to commission an Astro turf in Assin North.

Despite the overflow, they stood their ground, greeting footballers with handshakes and spreading a message of encouragement.

In a video capturing the scene, the vice president, alongside NPP executives including Nana B, walked through the rain to exchange pleasantries with the footballers as part of the commissioning of the pitch. Dr. Bawumia who declined to to take cover under an umbrella, was heard saying, “Give it your best,” instilling a sense of determination in the athletes.

Even the newly-constructed Astro turf itself was not spared as the football pitch turned into a swimming pool, adding an unexpected twist to the event.

The commissioning of the Astro turf holds significant importance as the Assin North constituency prepares for a highly anticipated by-election on June 27.

This electoral event follows a Supreme Court ruling that declared the election of James Gyakye Quayson as Member of Parliament (MP) for Assin North unconstitutional.

In response to the court’s decision, both major political parties have swiftly mobilized their forces, embarking on vigorous campaigns to rally voters and secure victory in the upcoming by-election.

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who commissioned the road project at Assin Praso indicated that the project was done with support from the Japanese government to the tune of 58 million US dollars adding that the government will continue to secure additional funds to construct the remaining 67 kilometres between Assin Fosu and Yamoransa.

“The 31.2-kilometre Assin Fosu to Assin Praso road has been completed, and it’s a testament to President Akufo-Addo’s commitment to improve road infrastructure across the country. The N8 highway will also connect Ahwian Nkwanta in the Ashanti region to Yamoransa in the Central Region. The project which is at a cost of 58 million US dollars is a grant from the government of Japan to Ghana,” Dr. Bawumia said.

“The upgrading of Assin Fosu town roads which is 50% completed is underway, and I must say that under the NPP government Assin has seen a lot of development. A modern footbridge and other auxiliary facilities will soon be completed,” the Vice President noted.

“This new technology used is environmentally friendly since it recycles the old payment and uses it as a sub-base material and this reduces the volume of gravels that will be taken from other adjoining communities,” Amoako Attah said.

Suzuki Momoko a representative of the Japanese Ambassador to Ghana His Excellency Hisanobu Mochizuki indicated that the Japanese government is confident that the construction of the road will ease the burden of traffic.

Christians will vote for Bawumia in 2024 – Dr Gideon Boako assures

The Spokesperson for Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, Dr Gideon Boako, has dismissed claims that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) will lose the Christian vote if it elects Dr. Bawumia as its Presidential candidate for the 2024 elections.

Some critics have argued that Christians will not vote for Dr. Bawumia because he is a Muslim.

But Dr Boako, who is a Christian and a Financial Economist, says it is a false assertion that Christians will not support the Vice President when the NPP chooses him to lead them into 2024 elections.

According to him, Dr Bawumia is a man of all people and has a good rapport with the Christian community.

“I’ve never seen a President or a Vice President in Ghana that Christians invite him to their programmes more than Bawumia…Currently, Christians invite Bawumia to their programmes more than any other political figure in this country,” he said on Peace FM’s ‘Kokrokoo’ morning show.

I want to make Ghana the digital hub of Africa – Bawumia

Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has indicated that making Ghana the digital for Africa is part of his vison for the country when he becomes president.

After formally submitting his documents to contest the flag-bearer position of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Accra, he noted the need to elect someone with vision and a track record.

In his address to hundreds of supporters who turned up in a show of support for his candidature, he said his quest is to among other things help better the people’s lives.

This pursuit for change, which is hinged on the foundation put in place so far, he said, will propel the country to the next level of development.

He said he desires to see a country that leverages technology, data, and systems for inclusive economic growth.

“I want to make Ghana the digital hub of Africa, bridge the digital divide, and apply digital technology and artificial intelligence for the transformation of healthcare, education, and public service delivery among others,” he stated.

Calling for support to lead his party, Dr. Bawumia said he envisions a country where the educational system focuses on STEM, robotics, artificial intelligence, and digital and vocational skills to meet the demands of the 4th industrial revolution.

Furthermore, he expressed his vision to realise food security in the shortest possible time through the application of science, data, artificial intelligence, satellite technology, the Internet of Things (IoT), and irrigation to commercial farming.

“We also want to complete the ongoing digitalization of data on all farms across the sixteen regions,” he added.

He declared his quest to realise a country that can maximize the benefits of its natural resources – like gold, lithium, and other minerals – through policies like value addition, setting up an LBMA-certified gold refinery, enhancing the gold for oil policy, and dedication to specific gold concessions to the Bank of Ghana to enhance the accumulation of gold reserves.

“I want to see Ghana as an industrialised nation. I want to entrench and enhance the current strategy of industrialisation that we have embarked on, and introduce new technology like digital manufacturing for the manufacturing of spare parts, syringes, and other equipment.”

Also, the Vice President indicated building a country with robust fiscal discipline in the management of public finances to sustainably and significantly reduce interest rates.

He said this will empower the local business sector, especially startups, and SMEs, to drive investment and growth, in addition to providing incentives for the private sector to replace the government in the provision of a significant amount of infrastructure and many other services.

Dr. Bawumia stated that he has a compelling vision for Ghana’s future. “It is possible for Ghana to be like the advanced nations if we put our minds and energies into it.

“With the technologies available, the new ones that are emerging, and a renewed mindset, we can leapfrog impossibilities and make the unimaginable possible. It is possible to break the eight to continue with the transformational policies we have started. It is possible!”

It is against this background, among others, that he said he has joined the contest to become a flag-bearer and presidential candidate for the election in 2024.

About 11m unregistered SIM cards to be deactivated today

As per the directive from the National Communications Authority (NCA), all active and unregistered SIM cards are required to be deactivated today, Wednesday May 31.

The Minister of Communications, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful announced the commencement of the re-registration of all mobile SIM cards on October 1, 2021, and the exercise was expected to have lasted for a period of six months but was extended several times for tangible challenges faced by SIM card users.

Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia had earlier explained that the re-registration exercise was to rid the country’s cyberspace of fraud, monitor and track down persons who use their phones for criminal activities.

The Vice President’s comments were corroborated by the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo-Dampare who said the re-registration exercise by the government had assisted the Service in its operations to clamp down on cybercrime in the country when he appeared before the Public Accounts Committee on January 20, 2023.

Government on February 14, 2023, disclosed that a total of 25,150,522 SIM cards had been successfully registered in Ghana as of February 9, 2023, and also encouraged the public to comply with the registration timelines.

All unregistered SIM cards were set for deletion on April 17, 2023, but the decision was rescinded after several consultations.

But a day before the final deadline, hundreds of Ghanaians rushed to the National Identification Authority’s Headquarters in Accra in a last-minute attempt to secure a Ghana Card which is mandatory for the re-registration exercise to enable them register their SIM cards to avoid deactivation.

Bawumia openly declares intention to contest NPP primaries

The candidature of Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia in the upcoming New Patriotic Party (NPP) primaries has been confirmed by aides, groups and supporters except for the man himself.

The closest he came to a declaration was a social media post titled “IT IS POSSIBLE,” and to say generally that the NPP can retin power beyond the cyclical eight years – that is, break the eight.

Bawumia has, however, made a public pronouncement on Saturday, May 20, 2023, during a courtesy visit to the Chief of Sekyere in the Sekyere Kumawu District, Adom News reports.

A report filed by Ohemeng Tawiah read in part: “His comments followed a question by the Chief of Sekyere, Nana Osei Kwabena Onini Pobi II for the Vice President to clear rumours he (Vice President) could be in the race to lead the NPP.

“In response, Dr Bawumia said he had thought and prayed about it and concluded that indeed when nominations open, he will be in the race.”

Bawumia is believed to have wide support of Members of Parliament (MPs) and within the rank and file, he will come up against other heavyweights like former trade minister Alan Kyerematen and Assin Central lawmaker, Kennedy Agyapong.

Most of the candidates are in Kumawu to support the NPP’s candidate in Tuesday’s parliamentary by-election, Ernest Yaw Anim.

  • Bawumia proposed Ghana’s digital economy in 2010 bestseller

Bawumia proposed Ghana’s digital economy in 2010 bestseller

Verifiable literature indicates that Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has proven revolutionary leadership on how to structurally alter Ghana’s economy ahead of his challengers in the 2024 presidential race.

In his 2010 bestseller, ‘Monetary Policy and Financial Sector Reform in Africa – Ghana’s Experience’, Dr. Bawumia comprehensively examined the monetary policy on the African continent and the need for reforms to ensure economic transformation through digitalisation.

It is therefore not surprising that the Vice President is a firm believer of putting in place digital structures to drive the economic transformation of Ghana.

In the review of the seminal book, Dr. Bawumia recommended reforms, after critically touching on all inhibiting issues, focused on digitalisation of African economies, which he said will be achieved on three main pillars.

He mentioned the three pillars as unique and verifiable national identification numbers, digital address systems and financial inclusion, which he pointed out, would bring on board the unbanked members of the informal sector.

All these are currently being implemented in Ghana by Government of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo under incisive supervision of Vice Bawumia.

    Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia
    Unique national ID numbers

According to Dr. Bawumia, a key component which underpins financial transaction in any society is trust.

However, his book revealed that trust was very low in Ghana’s financial transactions due to lack of database to properly identify people.

This is contrary to developed countries where every individual is identified with a unique national identification number.

Dr. Bawumia therefore suggested that the only way to curb this is to have a unique national identification number for the people, which can be easily authenticated both “online and offline.”
    Address system

Writing about the importance of a system of property addresses, Dr. Bawumia noted that it “is probably one of the most underestimated requirements for the development of an economy and its financial sector.”

Reiterating the importance of the system in an economy, Dr Bawumia stated, “one can imagine what would happen if for example, the address system in the United States, United Kingdom, South Korea or Japan disappeared overnight. These economies would basically grind to a halt because so much depends on residential or business addresses.”

Dr. Bawumia also argued that the absence of address system also “increases the risk premium bankers attach to a loan.”

He accordingly recommended that countries like Ghana, should, as a matter of priority, put in place a comprehensive address system.
    Financial inclusion

In the 2010 bestseller, Dr Bawumia called financial inclusion, “banking the unbanked”.

He noted that “the financial system cannot develop to its potential and monetary policy cannot be effective if the majority of the population continues to be excluded from access to financial services.”

Acknowledging the role the Bank of Ghana[AM1] ’s e-switch platform was playing in bridging the financial gap as far as banking was concerned, Dr Bawumia recommended the use of mobile phones to deliver mobile banking service within Bank of Ghana’s regulatory framework.
    Unwritten rules

In the concluding parts of the book, Dr Bawumia wrote that the recommendations he outlined were some of the unwritten rules for effective fiscal policy and financial management, as well as for general development.

“A unique identification number, an address system and financial inclusion (banking the unbanked) are basically some of the key unwritten rules for effective monetary policy and financial sector development in particular and over all development.

“Without these systems and institutions in place, no monetary policy framework will be sufficient in the long run to engender the type of financial sector that will be critical in the growth process. No donors have thus far required that countries put in place address systems, unique IDs, etc. in place as conditions for aid for example.”

Just as he recommended in his highly revered book, Dr Bawumia, as vice president and head of Ghana’s Economic Management Team, has followed to the letter the principles he preached, leading to the massive digital transformation of the Ghanaian economy.

Within four years of the NPP administration between 2017 and 2021, Ghana has a unique and verifiable national identification card, a digital property address system and financial inclusion of the unbanked through mobile money interoperability.

Through these pillars, just as Bawumia predicted in his book 11 years ago, there has been a digital transformation with many government services going online.

This is bringing relief to people in accessing services, and also helping in the fight against corruption.

Dr. Bawumia was praised by Mr. Ampratwum-Sarpong in a radio interview with Okay FM in Accra for his long-standing service to the NPP, his demonstrated competence, and his vision. According to Mr. Ampratwum-Sarpong, these qualities have won him the support of party members and will result in his resounding election as the party’s leader for victory in the upcoming presidential primary.

Mr. Ampratwum-Sarpong added that Dr. Bawumia enjoys the support of over 100 MPs in the NPP Caucus in Parliament, who demonstrated their overwhelming support during his meeting with them last week.

He said after the meeting, he was sure that Dr. Bawumia’s upcoming victory will be earth-shaking.

    Bawumia’s commitment

Ampratwum-Sarpong also lauded Dr. Bawumia’s commitment to the party and his support to the current government, as well as his demonstrated competence and capabilities.

He believes that Dr. Bawumia’s vision for Ghana’s future would build on the current government’s achievements and bring positive impacts to the party, the nation, and the youth in the country.

The Mampong MP cited digitisation as an example of Dr. Bawumia’s vision, which has been thriving and making a significant impact in Ghana.

Member of Parliament for the Yendi constituency, Umar Farouk Aliu Mahama, has said that majority of New Patriotic Party (NPP) Members of Parliament want Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia to be the party’s next flagbearer.

Mr. Mahama said Dr. Bawumia stands tall among the persons that have so far put themselves up for the NPP’s flagbearership slot.

Speaking on Eyewitness News on Citi FM, the Chairman of Parliament’s Muslim Caucus said though the other aspirants are equally qualified, the Vice President is the right person to take the country to the promised land considering his time working with President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

“As for me and the majority of the Majority MPs, we are rooting for the Vice President, and it is a fact, and we are bold enough to say that we want Mahamudu Bawumia to take us to the promised land and also unite the party after the elections.

“Although we are yet to meet the other presidential hopefuls, it was clear during our meeting with the Vice President that everybody in the room wants Dr. Bawumia, and we are not saying that everyone wants him, but at least, over 100 MPs want him.”

Mr. Mahama further indicated that he is optimistic “that Bawumia will win [the presidential primaries] with over 80 percent of the votes.”

The Vice President in a meeting with members of the Majority Caucus in Parliament on Tuesday, May 2 disclosed his intention to contest the NPP Presidential Primaries on November 4, 2023.

He comes up against nine others including three-time runner Alan Kyerematen who resigned in January 2023 to focus on his Presidential ambition.

  • Taxis in Accra to soon go digital, like Uber and Bolt – VP Bawumia

Taxis in Accra to soon go digital, like Uber and Bolt – VP Bawumia

The Vice President of Ghana, Mahamudu Bawumia, announced on Wednesday that taxi services in the Greater Accra Region would soon transition to a digital platform, similar to those used by Uber and Bolt.

This move would allow the public to access their services from any location in the region.

According to the Vice President, this transition to a “Tap and Go” system would be accessible with oyster cards and would be implemented by the end of the year.

The aim is to provide a practical solution to the current transport problems faced in the region.

During his speech at the opening of the 46th Session of the General Council Meeting of the Church of Pentecost, Gomoa-Fetteh, in the Central Region, the Vice President also encouraged politicians to focus on finding solutions rather than engaging in insults and propaganda.

He commended the Church of Pentecost for their initiative in organizing a meeting between the church and politicians in June 2023.

Apostle Eric Nyamekye, the Chairman of the Church of Pentecost, gave a report on the “State of the Church” during the meeting.

He expressed disappointment over the nationwide outbreak of cocoa disease, which hindered the growth of the church in cocoa-growing areas. He called on area heads and district ministers to devise measures to address these challenges.

Despite this setback, the church recorded a membership growth of 7.9% during his five-year stewardship, representing a total membership of 3,597,955 as of December 2022.

Mahamudu Bawumia has been the Vice President of Ghana since 2017 and has been leading the country’s digitalization revolution. His aim is to use digital technologies and data to improve economic processes, public services, and social inclusion.

The key initiatives under his digitalization agenda include the Ghana Card, the Digital Address System, the Mobile Money Payments Interoperability System, the Ghana.Gov Payments Platform, and the Universal QR Code.

The Ghana Card is a biometric national identification card that serves as proof of identity, citizenship, and residence. This card has been a significant step forward in ensuring that every Ghanaian has access to essential services and that their identities are verified.

The Digital Address System assigns a unique digital address to every location in Ghana, facilitating efficient delivery of goods and services. The Mobile Money Payments Interoperability System enables seamless transfer of funds between mobile wallets, bank accounts, and other payment systems, promoting financial inclusion.

The Ghana.Gov Payments Platform is a unified portal for government services and payments, making it easier for citizens to access essential services.

The Universal QR Code is a system that allows customers to pay merchants using their smartphones by scanning a QR code. These initiatives have positioned Ghana as a leader in digital transformation in Africa and a choice destination for international investments. The digitalization revolution in Ghana has promoted economic resilience, financial inclusion, transparency, accountability, and innovation.

Under the leadership of Mahamudu Bawumia, Ghana has made significant progress towards becoming a digital economy. The country’s digitalization initiatives have led to significant improvements in the efficiency and effectiveness of public services, making it easier for citizens to access essential services. The use of digital technologies has also enhanced transparency and accountability, reducing the opportunities for corruption and improving governance.

The digitalization revolution in Ghana has also led to the development of a vibrant and dynamic digital economy. The country has become a hub for technology startups, and many multinational technology companies have established a presence in Ghana. This has created employment opportunities for young people and promoted entrepreneurship.

Mahamudu Bawumia has been critical in driving Ghana’s digitalization revolution. His vision of a digital Ghana has inspired many Ghanaians to embrace digital technologies and has led to significant improvements in the country’s economic, social, and political landscape.

The Vice President’s commitment to digital transformation has positioned Ghana as a leader in Africa’s digital transformation and has set the country on a path towards sustainable development.

  • Let’s have politics based on solutions rather than insults – Bawumia

Let’s have politics based on solutions rather than insults – Bawumia

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, vice president of Ghana, has urged churches to pressure elected officials to put their attention on finding answers to the nation’s problems rather than engaging in divisive and propagandist politics.

He said that rather than trying to hide their actions in the shadows, politicians should let politics shed light on what they did.

At the 46th session of the General Council Meetings of the Church of Pentecost, which began yesterday at the Pentecost Convention Centre in Gomoa Fetteh in the Central Region, Dr. Bawumia made this statement.

“When you see a politician trying to talk, demand data to support what they are saying, so let us focus on light, let us focus on data, let us eschew insults and propaganda, and let us focus on solving problems that face this country on an everyday basis,” he said.

He endorsed an upcoming meeting between the Church of Pentecost and politicians in the country which, he said, had been scheduled to take place from June 14 to 16, 2023, and commended the church for the “bold initiative”.

    Electronic system taxis

The Vice-President also used the occasion to give a hint that commercial taxi drivers, particularly in the Greater Accra Region, would be hooked onto a digital system in the coming months to enable them to operate in similar fashion like the other electronic system-based taxis.

“We will be able to place all our taxis, at least in Greater Accra, to start with, all in an Uber-like platform, and you will be able to call for their services just like the Uber and other electronic taxis. It is a practical solution to a practical problem,” he said, adding that “those are the sort of things we as politicians should be focusing on.”

The Vice-President also announced that the public and private sector transport system would soon go on a “tap and go” system to be accessed with oyster cards by the end of this year.

    Conference

The three-day meeting, which is being attended by delegates from the Church of Pentecost from across the country and abroad, is on the theme: “Repositioning the local church for maximum impact in the nations”.

The meeting is the highest decision-making body of the church, and would, as part of its deliberations, witness the election of a General Secretary, Chairman and four other executive members to steer the affairs of the church in Ghana for the next five years.

Dr Bawumia underscored the need for good leadership if the country was to advance as a nation.

He noted that “with the Lord at the centre of everything, it is possible for us to make a maximum impact on our nation with the right leadership”.

Dr Bawumia said the Church of Pentecost provided the country with the needed example that, with good leadership, Ghana had what it would take to manage its affairs and make the country the envy of many.

    Commendation

While commending the church and its leadership for its commitment and dedication to both the church and national development over the years, Dr Bawumia said the flock of the church had been blessed with very good leaders.

He catalogued a number of projects and initiatives by the Church of Pentecost, particularly, during the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, saying the nation received significant relief from the church.

Dr Bawumia said it was instructive that the church had done all these as an indigenous organisation with no foreign or external support.

He further solicited for prayer support of the Church of Pentecost and other Christian leaders for the peace and prosperity of the country and the world.

    State of the church

Delivering his report on the “state of the church” during his five-year stewardship as Chairman of the Church of Pentecost, Apostle Eric Nyamekye paid tribute to leaders of the church, some of whom were retiring and others still in service for their roles and contributions.

He said the church in Ghana during the period grew in membership by 7.9 per cent to reach a total membership of 3,597,955 as of December 2022.

Apostle Nyamekye also announced that the European Commission recently awarded the Pentecost University and five other leading international universities with a €2.69 million grant for, among others, research in application of artificial intelligence, cyber-physical systems and robotics.

The over-an-hour report also touched on various sectors of the church, including the youth and children’s ministry, women’s ministry, education and health.

Apostle Nyamekye, however, expressed disappointment that despite all the successes chalked up, the nationwide outbreak of cocoa disease and rehabilitation programmes continued to affect the socio-economic life of members within cocoa growing areas.

He called on area heads and district ministers of the church to devise measures to tackle the challenges hindering the growth of the church in their respective jurisdictions.

  • Africa must not be excluded from fourth industrial revolution – Bawumia

Africa must not be excluded from fourth industrial revolution – Bawumia

Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has urged African leaders not to give up focus of the fourth industrial revolution.

He believes that modern technology and artificial intelligence have the potential to change African economies.

In an interview with the Africa Policy Journal, Dr. Bawumia stated that Africa cannot continue to fall behind and that the continent must actively engage in the fourth industrial revolution by leveraging technology advancements to accelerate socioeconomic growth.

“We were left behind in the first, second and third industrial revolutions, but we should not be left out in the fourth industrial revolution. I think that artificial intelligence applied properly will be a big boost to Africa to help us leapfrog and help us catch up in many areas. I think that AI should be seen as a tool to assist us”, he said.

Touching on key areas of transformation, Dr. Bawumia noted that health, education and agriculture should be critical areas for the digitization revolution on the continent.

“I see three main areas that we in Africa can use AI; health. If we have many doctors and nurses using ChatGPT 4 to ask questions, they can get very accurate answers in providing healthcare. We already have drones supplying essential medicines, vaccines blood supplies to remote areas in saving lives.”

“These are practical benefits of AI, and we need to embrace it. Also in education, it is not everywhere we have teachers but with these tools, we can get teachers. The same can be said with agriculture. So, I think that if we focus on some of these areas, Africa can always benefit.”

With the introduction of sophisticated technologies such as the Internet of Things, artificial intelligence and advanced automation, the fourth industrial revolution has the potential to increase productivity and efficiencies.

“In terms of these technologies, Africa comes to the table with no legacy systems. We can find many areas to leapfrog that the developed countries will find difficult to follow. So, we should not use the developed countries as a measure. We have to chart our own course because they have a different set of facts on the grounds from us. So, we shouldn’t be intimidated.”

  • Bawumia urges Africans to stop depending on basic necessities

Bawumia urges Africans to stop depending on basic necessities

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, vice president, claims that Africa’s continued reliance on basic commodities is hindering its economic development.

Dr. Bawumia says the situation is forcing many African governments to manage crises due to external shocks.

Speaking at the Harvard University’s Africa Development Conference in the United States over the weekend, Dr. Bawumia said African countries must shift from raw material production to value addition.

“The reliance on primary commodities has made African countries vulnerable to external shocks. As a result, the focus of economic management by successive African governments since independence has been crisis management as a result of factors such as an increase in oil prices, collapse in commodity prices, debt unsustainability, macro-instability and so on.

“Governments have by and large not focused on the underlying system that underpins economic activities and economic growth. Our focus has always been on managing crisis of one nature or the other,” the Vice President said.

Dr. Bawumia further urged, “Our generation needs to break the shackles of the impossibility mindset and embrace the mindset of possibility! It is time for us to figure out the best ways to be masters of our destiny, to chart our own path and develop on our own terms. It is possible!”

  • Africans need to break the shackles of impossibility mindset – Bawumia

Africans need to break the shackles of impossibility mindset – Bawumia

Africans, according to Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, have long been stuck in an aura of impossibility.

This, he said, was probably the result of the experience of years of slavery and colonialism.

“We don’t believe in ourselves. However, for us to realize our full potential and set ourselves apart, we need to break the shackles of impossibility mindset and embrace the mindset of possibility.

“African countries can do what the Advanced countries have done and more. It is possible,” he said on Saturday April 15 while speaking as the guest speaker at a gathering of students, academics and the business community at Harvard university during the African Development Conference at the Harvard Law School on the theme “reimagining Africa’s growth on our terms.”

He indicated that at the heart of this vision is the transformative power of technology.

“In my view, the greatest bane to the development of Africa is our inability to solve the basic problems of the absence of unique identity for our population, functioning property address systems, financial inclusion, payment systems, efficient public service delivery, etc. that underpin our economic activities.

“For many years after independence we have been trying to transform our economies without data and transparent systems. Without data and systems African countries cannot participate in the fourth Industrial Revolution,” he said.

Chief Imam, Dr. Bawumia lauded for fostering religious unity

The Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, and the National Chief Imam, Sheikh Osman Nuhu Sharubutu, have received praises from Apostle Dr. Stephen Kwame Ntow Amoani, a former chairman of the Apostolic Church International, for their contributions to preserving peaceful relations between Muslims and Christians in Ghana.

Apostle Ntow Amoaning was among Christians who, who joined their Muslim counterparts at the Jubilee House for the National Iftar – the traditional dinner to break Ramadan fast.

Delivering a sermon at the event, Apostle Ntow Amoaning reflected on the level of religious tolerance in the country and applauded Sheikh Sharubutu and Vice President Bawumia for providing leadership, which has greatly inspired and strengthened the harmonious relationship between Muslims and Christians in Ghana.

The national Jubilee House Iftar was introduced by the Akufo-Addo Government in 2017, and it has since been held every year, except in 2020 due to covid-19 restrictions.

Speaking at the ceremony, Vice President Bawumia said the institution of the Iftar, has enabled the government to broaden its engagements with religious groups for harmony.

“The historic institution of the Jubilee House Iftar, after we assumed office in 2017, reflects its importance, and the significance our government attaches to our engagements with religious groups, in our quest to promote harmony among our people,” Dr. Bawumia said.

Dr. Bawumia added: “The month of Ramadan is a period of devotion, sacrifice and togetherness, and the Iftar, as we all know, is a time during Ramadan, which defines the essence of unity, as we have all gathered here from diverse backgrounds, including our Christian brothers, for a meal to break the day’s fast and also pray for our nation Ghana.”

The Vice President also praised the presence and active participation of Christian leaders in the Iftar and called for the strengthening of ties between Muslims and Christians for the peace and unity of the country.

“Listening to the brief sermon of Apostle Dr. Stephen Kwame Ntow Amoani, a renowned Christian leader, at a Muslim Iftar, signifies how special our country is. It is rare to see such beautiful co-existence in many countries, and we must all be proud of our country’s enviable status as a religious-tolerant nation,” Dr. Bawumia said.

“It is important for all of us to continue to play a role to preserve this harmony, and not allow it to be destroyed by those who hate to see such tolerance and togetherness,” he urged.

Present at the Iftar included Ministers, Members of the Council of State, MPs, Members of the Diplomatic community, Muslim leaders and some members of the clergy.

  • NDC only increased unemployment – Bawmia

NDC only increased unemployment – Bawmia

According to vice president Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the eight-year administration of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) only served to increase unemployment.

He contrasted this with the fact that the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) had added 2.1 million jobs since coming to office in 2017.

The Vice President stated that out of the 2.1 million jobs, 975,000 were in the private sector and the remaining 1.2 million were in the public sector while speaking at Mpraeso Saturday morning, April 8, 2023, in the Eastern Region. This was after the party had organised a health walk as part of activities to mark this year’s Kwahu Easter celebration.

He said the party was able to create the jobs due to the strong economic management team the party has assembled to run the affairs of the country.

He explained that the emergence of the graduate unemployment association during the era of the NDC government was a clear attestation of the mess the party created in the country.

“They were not creating jobs. They were creating unemployment,” Dr Bawumia said, adding that in spite of the current economic challenges that the country was facing, the party was working assiduously to turn things around.

He expressed the hope that the country’s economy will bounce back to further create more jobs for the teaming youth in the country.

Dr Bawumia therefore implored Ghanaians to continue to repose their trust in the NPP-led government since they are capable of turning the fortunes of the country around.

    More to follow…

  • Bawumia’s Easter message: imitate Christ’s humility

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the vice president, has sent his best wishes to Christians in Ghana and all across the world as they celebrate the Easter holiday.

On Friday, April 7, during Christians’ celebration of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ and his death at Calvary, he made this known in a tweet.

Christians all throughout the world commemorate Good Friday as the day when Jesus willingly endured suffering and died by crucifixion as the final atonement for sin.

It is also observed to celebrate the day Jesus Christ was raised from the dead, heralding his victory over sin and death and pointing ahead to a future resurrection for all who are united to him by faith.

To this end, Dr Bawumia has entreated all Christians to imitate the sacrifice Jesus Christ made to humanity.

He believed that if Christians are able to emulate the steps of Jesus Christ, there would be a “cordial co-existence on earth.”

“I wish Christians in Ghana and around the world a happy Easter. As Christians commemorate the passion of Jesus Christ, I entreat all to learn from the sacrifice illustrated by Christ to humanity and emulate it,” he tweeted.

The vice president was also hopeful and wished that the Easter celebration will be “an incident-free festive season.”

The future is digitalisation – Dr Bawumia declares

Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has joined the Minister for Communications and Digitalisation, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, to inaugurate the Christina Akua Brago Diawuo Library and Technology Hub in honour of her mother.

Speaking at the state-of-the-art edifice’s inauguration in Akim Oda in the Eastern Region, Dr. Bawumia said digitalisation is critical to the country’s future.

The Vice President said this initiative will undoubtedly shape the community’s future, complementing government’s mission to digitise all sectors of the economy by equipping the youth with ICT skills.

“Digitalisation is the future of the globe. Hence, there is a need to equip our youth to be prepared for the competition ahead,” Dr. Bawumia said. “The government of Ghana has prioritised education and deliberately made efforts in motivating girl-child education.”

The facility comes with a Huawei Idea Hub, and will serve as a valuable resource for local schools by providing students with access to virtual learning experiences and allowing them to connect with other students from different parts of the world.

The facility is funded by the Ghana Investment Fund for Electronic Communications (GIFEC), Huawei Ghana, MTN Ghana and the Ghana Library Authority.

On his part, the Administrator of GIFEC, Prince Ofosu Sefah, said the project will significantly reduce disparity in access to ICT between urban and rural populations in Ghana.

“It will also ensure that the impact of ICT is felt in every facet of citizens’ lives; in education, health, commerce, agriculture and even entertainment, as ICT remains a key factor in the economic and social development of countries because it has positive effects on economic growth, productivity and employment,” he said.

GIFEC, since its establishment, has provided innovative solutions to ensure universal access and digital inclusion in the country’s remotest parts and to all marginalised communities through three main programme areas: infrastructure development, equipment and resource provision, and capacity building.

Again, in an attempt to provide basic and intermediate skills to enable students use digital technologies in more meaningful and beneficial ways, GIFEC has since 2017 to date equipped ICT laboratories for over 947 basic and senior high schools to improve teaching and learning of ICT, with 91 in the Eastern Region alone.

Through this initiative, a total of about 17,000 citizens from various backgrounds have been trained in various ICT programmes across the country. It has also facilitated the Girls in ICT Programme, which has trained about 8,000 girls and 800 teachers.

Its Digital Transformation Centres Programme (DTC), implemented in partnership with the ITU, CISCO and NORAD, has also trained 10,000 citizens across the country.

Brian Wulang, Director of Enterprise Business, Huawei, expressed the company’s excitement to be part of “this incredible initiative aimed at promoting digital literacy and empowering individuals, especially the youth, to unlock their full potential”.

“The youth are our future, and the onus lies on us to ensure that they have the right tools and skillset to excel in the future. As the world is on a digital quest to advance and transform societies, we believe that technology should be available and accessible to all,” said Wulang.

For many years, Huawei has been at the forefront of technological innovation and is passionate about leveraging technology to improve people’s lives.

  • GRA’s digital electronic tax clearance certificate launched

GRA’s digital electronic tax clearance certificate launched

The Electronic Tax Clearance Certificate for the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has been launched in Accra by Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

The Electronic Tax Clearance Certificate app is an integrated digital platform which enables taxpayers to do three key things at a go: access and generate their tax clearance certificate online, file their tax returns and also check their tax compliance status.

There are also three options for accessing the platform; either through a QR Code, the platform’s online portal or through a USSD short code *880#, with either a smart or a ‘yam’ phone.

Launching the platform, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who has spearheaded government’s digital transformation, said the introduction of the Elctronic Tax Clearance Certificate by the GRA, further signifies government’s commitment to its digitalization agenda.

Dr. Bawumia lauded the GRA for taking advantage of government’s digitization drive and the transformation of delivery of services through technology, to introduce what he called, life-changing solutions, such as the Integrated Customs Management System (ICUMS) at the ports, amongst others.

“The introduction of the Electronic VAT platform-E VAT – has also signalled the beginning of an era of transparency and accountability in VAT. Over the years the contribution of VAT to Government revenue has gradually declined and Government had to find ways to remedy this situation,” Dr. Bawumia said.

He added, “furthermore, the introduction of the cashless mode of payment of taxes has enabled taxpayers to pay taxes conveniently through either mobile money, bank transfer or other cashless means. The introduction of the Ghana.gov platform has also enabled us pay for provision of government services digitally and conveniently”.

The Vice President expressed delight at “digital remedies”, which he said, have been introduced by the government, “to revolutionize the manual ways of providing services in the Public Service”.

Some of these initiatives, he noted, are the introduction of the Ghana Card as a unique identifier of individuals in Ghana.

“Apart from helping build on our national identification system by leveraging on technology, the Ghana Card helps to identify individuals for tax purposes,” the Vice President said.

Dr. Bawumia said, “your Ghana Card is also your Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN). In effect, your Ghana Card is your reference for registration, filing of returns, making payments of tax due and accessing other services provided by GRA.”

He stressed, “other areas of digitalization that have transformed lives and businesses are the Digital Addressing System which helps to identify and locate places, the National Electronic Pharmacy Platform (NEPP) which enables you to order lifesaving drugs; the Mobile Money Interoperability which lets you have a bank account in your pocket; medical drones which are helping to deliver medical supplies to inaccessible areas faster, thereby saving lives. These are but a few of the many initiatives of how technology has improved services for all of us”.

Kejetia traders should not be allowed to cook in the market – Kojo Bonsu to management

Former mayor of Kumasi, Kojo Bonsu, has urged administrators of the new Kejetia market to promptly halt all traders from cooking inside the marketplace.

His call comes after fire gutted the new market recently destroying thousands of items running into millions of cedis.

The former mayor while addressing the matter indicated that management of the market must have a plan which should be executed to avert future fire incidents within the enclave.

“The fire that engulfed the market you could say it was a maintenance failure. I hear there were some carbide and something that brought the fire. So you cannot blame management for that. All cooking activities should come to a halt at the new Kejetia market,” the former Mayor of Kumasi opined.

Following the March 15 fire outbreak at the facility, aside from the shops that were directly affected, some other shops were asked to be closed down for a structural integrity test to be conducted before being allowed to operate.

The Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, says the briefing he received from the Ghana National Fire Service indicates that a fire from a trader cooking at the new Kejetia market caused the inferno at the facility.

According to Dr. Bawumia, the shop owner was cooking inside her shop when the gas cylinder she was using caught fire spreading to a nearby chemical shop, thus destroying 33 shops out of 8,000 shops at the market.

He added that the chemical shop owner amongst others sells combustibles such as carbide, turpentine and gunpowder which exploded.

A trader at the market was arrested for cooking at the facility but was later granted bail.

The Ministry of Local Government, Decentralization and Rural Development has thus inaugurated a 5-member committee to probe the recent fire incident.

The committee which has been tasked to make its findings ready within three weeks was constituted on March 17.

  • Dr. Bawumia becoming president of Ghana has been my goal since 2012 – NAPO

Dr. Bawumia becoming president of Ghana has been my goal since 2012 – NAPO

Since meeting Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in 2012, Energy Minister, Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh has said that his ultimate goal has been to see that Bawumia is elected President of Ghana.

NAPO as known in politics, believes that with where Ghana currently is, the country needs an intelligent man like Bawumia to propel the country to a higher height.

Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh made this known while speaking on Kumasi-based Pure FM monitored by MyNewsGh.com.

“All my work I’ve done and everything I’ve represented since 2012 is to ensure that Dr. Bawumia becomes President of Ghana one day. I’ve never for a second dreamt of being his running mate. That is not why I’m supporting Dr. Bawumia’s work. I have the conviction and confidence that where Ghana is at the moment, we need someone like Dr. Bawumia to take Ghana forward.” He revealed

He, however, shot down claims that he wants to become the running mate of Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

According to him, the Vice President has not even declared his intention to contest for the position so it’s worrying that people think he is lobbying to become his running mate.

“The man has not even declared his intentions to become the Flagbearer and subsequently President of this country. We just came to accompany him to Otumfuo’s Akwasidae. I was abroad some weeks ago working for the government when I heard someone insulting me and saying I want to become the Vice President. We have not even elected our flagbearer so how does someone even lobby to become Vice President?

People have been talking and saying things to paint others black and that is worrying. You don’t even get where they get their information from to link me to be lobbying to become the Bawumia’s running mate.”He bemoaned

The Energy Minister noted that people have started attacks just because of an internal contest but was quick to add that he is a man who does not subscribe to politics of insults.

“I don’t subscribe to the strategy of insulting your opponent and later going and begging so we move on. I will never forget if you insult me,” he said.
