Police intercept suspected drug shipment, arrest driver

A 50-year-old commercial driver, Atampugri Akanyani, has been nabbed by the police after 714 slabs of suspected Indian hemp were found in his possession.

The slabs which were hidden in nine nylon sacks were discovered during a routine snap check by police officers at the Asanso checkpoint along the Bekwai–Aputogya road on Tuesday, January 26, 2026.

Atampugri Akanyani disclosed that an unknown individual at the Kejetia Lorry Terminal in Kumasi handed over the suspected Indian hemp to him for delivery, at a fee of six hundred Ghana cedis, to another unidentified person in Obuasi.

Meanwhile, Atampugri Akanyani has since been arraigned before the court. Last year, 600 fertiliser sacks of Indian hemp, weighing a total of 47,530kg and valued at about GH¢4.2 billion, were destroyed by the Volta Regional Police Command.

The destruction exercise, which occurred on Monday, November 17, was carried out pursuant to an order from the Ho Circuit Court. This information was contained in a statement issued on Thursday, November 20, and signed by Chief Inspector Francis Kwaru Gomado, Head of the Public Affairs Unit of the Volta Region.

Parts of the statement read, “the six hundred sacks contained a total of forty-seven thousand, five hundred and thirty kilograms (47,530kg) with an estimated face value of about 4.2 billion Ghana cedis.”

In August 2025, the Central East Regional Police Command arrested two suspects in possession of 519 compressed parcels of dried leaves suspected to be Indian Hemp.

The suspects, identified as Eric Nkyeke, 30, and Francis Klu, 28, were held in police custody. The Toyota Hilux pick-up with registration number GS 6849-21 was impounded at Nyanyano in the Gomoa East District.

This was revealed in a statement issued by the Nyanyano District police command. In June, the police nabbed two suspects for having in their possession 84 parcels of substances suspected to be Indian hemp.

The police team, through an intelligence-led operation on June 15, intercepted an Opel Astra vehicle with registration number GT 6430-13 driven by suspect John Dzeble, together with suspect Adzobi Mesiwotso on board.

A search conducted on the vehicle revealed 86 compressed parcels of substances suspected to be Indian hemp, discreetly concealed in the inner compartments of the car, including the engine, doors, and boot.

In addition to the compressed parcels, the officers retrieved a portable measuring scale machine and a roll of masking tape, also concealed, believed to have been used in the packaging of the substancesThe suspects, along with the exhibits, are currently in Police custody, assisting with investigations.

The Oti Regional Police Command has commended the swift and professional action of the personnel involved in the arrest and reaffirmed its commitment to curbing drug trafficking and related criminal activities.

The arrest comes after a recent incident where the police captured one Christopher Partey for unlawful possession of 40 parcels of a substance suspected to be narcotic drugs.

The National Highway Patrol Unit of the Ghana Police Service arrested on Wednesday, June 11.

The team intercepted a Ford Transit bus with registration number AS 524-16 near the outskirts of Ayikuma township while on routine patrol along the Accra–Somanya corridor.

A search of the vehicle revealed 40 tightly wrapped parcels concealed in a fertilizer sack in the vehicle’s boot. Upon interrogation, Christopher Partey, a passenger on board, admitted ownership of the items.

The exhibits retrieved have been handed over to the Drug Law Enforcement Unit at the Police Headquarters for further investigation.

The suspect is currently in police custody, assisting investigations, and will be put before the court. In April, a total of 189 Cadets were officially inducted into service to support Ghana’s ongoing efforts to combat narcotic drug trafficking and related crimes.

The induction, held at the Eastern Naval Command, marked a significant collaboration between the Leadership Training School (LTS) and the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC).

The event, which featured the ceremonial swearing of an oath of allegiance, signified the commitment of the new recruits to serve the nation with dedication and uphold the values of integrity and national security.

The training, led by the Commanding Officer of LTS, is designed to build the capacity of cadets by focusing on the fundamentals of narcotics law and enforcement.

The course places particular emphasis on confidence-building, professional discipline, and a thorough understanding of legal procedures necessary for their roles in narcotics control.

As part of the induction, NACOC leadership underscored the importance of adherence to institutional rules and the responsible handling of classified information.

The Commission reiterated its mission to disrupt the narcotics trade and act as a stabilizing force in communities vulnerable to the influence of drug-related activities.

NACOC reaffirmed its commitment to making Ghana an unattractive hub for drug trafficking, prioritizing public safety and the protection of the nation’s borders.

Calls have also been made for increased government support to enhance the Commission’s operational capacity, including the recruitment of additional personnel and the provision of improved financial and logistical resources.

The new cadets are expected to play a key role in reinforcing the Commission’s enforcement operations across the country.

  • I wanted to be a firefighter or driver – Mahama shares childhood dream

I wanted to be a firefighter or driver – Mahama shares childhood dream

Former President John Dramani Mahama has revealed that his childhood dreams had nothing to do with politics or leadership but rather simple aspirations of becoming a fireman or a driver.

Speaking at the Cedar Mountain Chapel of the Assemblies of God Church in East Legon, Accra, Mahama reminisced about his early ambitions, saying he was fascinated by fire trucks and transport buses as a child.

“I mean, if you ask me what do you want to be in future, I didn’t say I want to be a doctor or a lawyer. At one time I wanted to be a fireman. Because I like their uniform and the red fire trucks they used to drive,” he said.

“Then another time I wanted to be a State Transport Company driver. Because you sit in the car from Tamale to Accra, the way he’s driving it, it looks nice.”

Despite his childhood aspirations, Mahama acknowledged that his life took an unexpected turn, with divine intervention shaping his journey into politics.

“God has kept pushing me in the direction that he wants me to go. At every point, I have been reluctant to follow that trajectory. For instance, politics, I was reluctant to go into politics.”

He explained that his hesitation stemmed from his father’s experiences in politics. His father, Emmanuel Adama Mahama, was imprisoned for two years following the overthrow of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, an ordeal that left him disillusioned with politics.

“And so because of the narrations that he had given about the trauma he suffered in prison and the setbacks he suffered as a result of his politics, my mind was, I will not be a politician. But God said, who are you to decide? I will do with you what I want. And the rest is history.”

Mahama, a member of the Assemblies of God, visited the church to worship and reflect on his faith. He expressed his hope to serve as an instrument for positive change in Ghana.

“My prayer is, God use me as your instrument. It is you who brought me to this place. It is you who will let me serve your purpose. And the purpose is to serve my fellow Ghanaians and make sure that we’re able to turn the fortunes of this country around and make everybody’s life better.”

Reverend Stephen Wengam, General Superintendent of Assemblies of God, Ghana, commended Mahama and his wife, Lordina, for their support of the church’s growth. He highlighted Mahama’s significance as one of four Presidents associated with the Assemblies of God Church.

A private vehicle was also caught in the incident. Eyewitnesses, whose voices can be heard in the footage, confirmed that the truck driver was inside the vehicle at the time of the accident.

Reactions on X have sparked concerns about the role of the police in ensuring that only roadworthy vehicles are allowed on the roads.

Driver’s licence renewal will be extended to 10 years if elected – Bawumia

The New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has called for a major overhaul of Ghana’s driver’s license renewal system.

He advocated for extending the license validity to up to 10 years, citing the current two-year renewal requirement as burdensome.

Addressing a campaign event in Akwatia, Eastern Region, the Vice President expressed frustration with the existing system.

“We are all drivers and our drivers’ licences expire every two years, it that not the case? Unless you go to the DVLA to renew it why?

  • AG orders MOH to recoup GHS1.34m in failed delivery of condoms, contraceptives to medical stores

The Auditor-General is actively pursuing a driver, Joe Gyaten, who was assigned to deliver approximately three million male condoms and other contraceptives valued at GH¢1.34 million to the Regional Medical Stores (RMS) in Eastern Region.

Despite the scheduled delivery date of August 22, 2022, Gyaten failed to complete the delivery, triggering an investigation under Section 96 of the Public Financial Management Act, 2016 (Act 921), which mandates accountability for losses or deficiencies in government stores or property.

In its latest report, the Auditor-General highlighted significant financial irregularities totaling over GH¢2.41 billion across various ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs) in 2023.

Notably, GH¢2.06 million of these irregularities were linked to issues in stores and procurement, including the GH¢1.34 million related to the missing contraceptives.

The audit identified the discrepancy through documentation such as the Temporary Central Medical Stores Requisition and Issue Voucher No. MOH/GHS 308088, dated August 22, 2022. Subsequent investigations confirmed that the contraceptives never arrived at the RMS, raising concerns about possible misappropriation.

Consequently, the Auditor-General has instructed the Ministry of Health (MOH) to recover the GH¢1.34 million from Gyaten. Failure to comply will hold MOH officials personally liable for the debt, emphasizing the seriousness of the issue.

The MOH has referred the matter to its Health Intelligence Unit for further investigation, working closely with the Ghana Police Service’s Criminal Investigations Department to address the issue comprehensively.

  • Driver arrested on DUI charges after colliding with farmworker bus, killing 8 people in Florida

Driver arrested on DUI charges after colliding with farmworker bus, killing 8 people in Florida

The police in Florida arrested the driver of a pickup truck for crashing into a bus and killing eight people. They arrested him for driving while drunk and causing the deaths.

Bryan Maclean Howard, who is 41 years old, is charged with eight counts of DUI-Manslaughter, according to the FHP. No more information was given, including what substance is said to have made Howard unable to function normally.

Police said he was driving a 2001 Ford Ranger when it went into the opposite lane on State Road 40, a straight but hilly road with two lanes that goes past horse farms. The truck hit the side of the bus, making it go off the road at 6:40 in the morning. It broke a fence and hit a tree, then flipped over. Eight people died and at least 40 people were hurt.

It is not known if Howard has a lawyer. And we couldn’t find any phone numbers for his family. State records show that Howard has been arrested before for driving without a valid license, running away from an accident, and having marijuana.

The crash occurred in Marion County, which is about 80 miles north of Orlando. The workers were going to Cannon Farms in Dunellon, where they pick watermelons. The bus tipped over and its windows were broken. The back door and top hatch were open. The truck stopped at the side of the road. The air bag was blown and there was a lot of damage to the driver’s side.

In 2022, more farmworkers died in vehicle crashes than from any other job-related cause. They made up 81 out of 171 deaths. It wasn’t clear if the bus had seat belts right away.

Many states want to make stricter rules to keep farmworkers safe. Most of the workers are migrants. We don’t know if all the workers on the bus were from another country.

The Labor Department made new rules for seat belts in vehicles used by farmworkers on temporary visas. The rules also include other protections for workers, and they start on June 28. The Florida Fruit & Vegetable Association does not agree with the seatbelt rule because they think it is not practical.

In the state, farmworkers must use seatbelts while riding in small vehicles that weigh less than 10,000 pounds.

“We are closed today to show respect for the losses and injuries from the accident at Olvera Trucking Harvesting Corp. this morning,” Cannon Farms posted on Facebook. “Please join us in saying a prayer for the families and loved ones affected by this terrible accident. ” We thank you for understanding during this tough time.

Cannon Farms is a farm run by a family for over 100 years. The company now sells peanuts and watermelons to grocery stores all over the U. SCanada and the United States are two neighboring countries.

No one picked up the phone when it rang at Olvera Trucking on Tuesday afternoon. The company put out a job posting for a driver to take workers to the watermelon fields for a short time. The driver would then use farming machines to collect crops. The pay was $14.77 for each hour worked.

Olvera asked the Labor Department for permission to hire 43 workers to pick watermelons at Cannon Farms. The company offered to pay $14.77 per hour and also promised to provide housing and transportation to the fields.

The H-2A program lets US employers or agents bring in foreign workers to fill temporary agricultural jobs, as long as they meet certain rules. Florida farms hire more H-2A workers than any other state. They hire about 50,000 workers every year, according to the Florida Fruit & Vegetable Association.

Andres Segura, who works at AdventHealth hospitals, said that the injured workers were in good moods despite their injuries and were being visited by chaplains.

“We were able to be there and give help and prayers when it was needed,” he said.

The Farmworker Association of Florida is helping accident victims and their families by raising money through a GoFundMe campaign. So far, they have raised $5,000 out of their $50,000 goal.

“The post said that it’s important to remember farmworkers, especially during hard times, even though they are often overlooked. ”

Two organizations that support farmworkers have asked for tougher rules to keep them safe from danger.

“It’s too easy to think of this as just another accident,” said Asia Clermont, who leads the League of United Latin American Citizens in Florida. Florida needs to do everything it can to keep its essential workers safe. They are people who are very important for the state’s economy.

Ty Joplin from the Coalition of Immokalee Workers said that the rules about transportation for farmworkers are usually not followed.

“Accidents can happen, but we can protect workers by making sure they have safety measures like seat belts and regular safety checks while they are being transported. This can help lower the number of injuries and deaths. “.

Two helicopters or ambulances took three kids and six grown-ups to the hospital. Some of them were really hurt.

Some people who were hurt got help right away where it happened, and some were driven to the hospital in private cars. The sheriff in Michigan said a 66-year-old woman was driving the car when she crashed into the building and went 25 feet inside.

The court was told that the person’s car was going at least 62mph in a 30mph zone before it crashed at 3:42am on July 16 2022.

The judge said Okojie-Aidonojie’s behavior was like crazy, especially because her passengers had been standing up and dancing right before the crash.

She was also found to have hurt Mr Sidibe badly by driving dangerously.

“I am sorry for the loss of Mary and Rida. ” She wrote this in a letter to the court.

She disagreed with the defendant’s claim that they were ‘best friends’ and said they had only met once before.

Mr Boutjettif’s family said that when his father died, he was 16 years old. He went to college and learned how to become a gas engineer.

“They said he cared about everyone he met and loved them. “

The deceased’s body was deposited at the morgue of the Municipal hospital, and the Toyota V8 vehicle was parked at the premises of the Ghana Police Service. Nana Besemuna, who also serves as the President of the Oti Regional House of Chiefs, reported the incident to the Police.

A Police source confirmed the incident as investigations into the matter continued.

  • You’re a co-driver not a mate – PPP chair to Bawumia

    You’re a co-driver not a mate – PPP chair to Bawumia

The National Chairman of the Progressive People’s Party (PPP), Nana Ofori Owusu, has criticized Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia for describing himself as a “driver’s mate” in the Akufo-Addo-led government.

Speaking on Peace FM, Owusu expressed concern that Bawumia’s characterization is problematic, as someone widely regarded as an “economic Messiah” seeks to distance himself from the government.

Mr Owusu emphasized that the vice president holds the position to assist and contribute productively to the president’s reliance on the country’s progress.

He contested the notion that being a “mate” doesn’t necessitate possessing the qualities of a driver to step into the driver’s role.

“It is inappropriate to characterize a dignified individual in such a manner. We recognize his role as an economic leader, actively contributing to advisory bodies and implementing innovative ideas. However, the narrative suggesting that his boss hinders him from fulfilling his responsibilities is perilous. This situation reflects the challenge of wanting contradictory things simultaneously

“The new team must address and streamline this narrative, as a person cannot simultaneously be enthusiastic and indifferent. Referring to him as a “mate” is inaccurate; he is a co-driver. The role of a mate does not inherently require driving skills or a license, unlike that of a vice president who is constitutionally ready to assume the presidential duties when required. The distinction lies in the readiness and responsibilities associated with being a co-driver, akin to the vice president’s role,” he added.

Dr. Bawumia’s speech, serving as an opening to his official campaign launch following his election as the Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party in November 2023, conveyed his humble acknowledgment of playing the role of a driver’s mate in the government.

“As Vice President I am like a driver’s mate. But if, by the Grace of God, you make me President, I will be in the driver’s seat with constitutionally mandated authority to pursue my vision and my priorities,” he added.

The Vice President highlighted the significant achievements of the Akufo-Addo-led Government over the past seven years and outlined his vision for Ghana, anticipating a potential election as President on December 7.

Since becoming the Flagbearer, Dr. Bawumia has consistently communicated his dedication to digitizing Ghana’s economy, promoting sustainable job creation, and establishing an inclusive system aligned with global requirements.

In his victory address on November 4, 2023, Dr. Bawumia shared his vision for building an inclusive, food self-sufficient, data-driven, and systems-based nation actively participating in the global digital revolution, as he aspires to lead the country.

15-year jail term awarded to driver for defiling minor in church

A 27-year-old driver was given a 15-year prison term for having sex with a 14-year-old girl in a church at Sowutuom.

Enoch Mensah entered a guilty plea to the charge of defilement during his appearance before the Gender Based Violence Court at the Police Headquarters.

Mensah’s own plea resulted in his conviction and sentencing by the court.

Mensah is accused of defiling the victim four times in the complainant’s home in addition to the church grounds.

Innocently following Mensah when he sought her help, the victim defiled the church, as Detective Chief Inspector Opoku Aniagyei begged the court to impose a deterrent sentence.

In the prosecution’s case, the complainant—a trader who lives in Apotro, close to Sowutuom in Accra—is the mother of the victim, a 14-year-old.

Mensah, a driver, lived in the same area, according to the prosecutor.

The victim assisted the accused in cleaning the church at the Church name withheld in Nsumfa, close to Sowutum, in June 2023.

According to the report, Mensah locked the church, led the victim to an office, and engaged in “unprotected sexual intercourse” with her on a table while admonishing her not to tell anyone.

Mensah proceeded to have four sex encounters with the victim at the complainant’s home, according to the prosecutor.

A road user, evidently concerned by the actions of the youth in the area, confronted them but this did not stop the youth from going on with what they were doing.

Subsequently, a gas canister was thrown inside, and officers entered the lorry to extract the non-compliant driver.

The reason for the chase remains unclear, with police highlighting the driver’s erratic behavior, including multiple lane changes and swerving.

Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez stated that the driver exhibited signs of “heavy impairment,” although the motive behind the individual’s actions remains unknown.

  • Driver fined GHS14,400 for biting police officer

Driver fined GHS14,400 for biting police officer

A 24-year-old commercial driver has been convicted by the Assin-Fosu District Court to pay a fine of Gh14,400.00 or, in default, to serve nine months in prison for biting a police officer’s fingers in an effort to elude arrest.

In the courtroom presided over by Abdul Majeed Illiasu, the convict, Ebenezer Nkoom, pleaded guilty to 13 various offences, including inflicting harm, illegal harm, resisting arrest, and roughly seven traffic offenses. He also begged for mercy.

The complainants, General Constable Samuel Ayamba and Police Woman Constable Sophia Essel, are policemen assigned to the Central North Regional Police Command of the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD), according to the prosecutor, Chief Inspector Gilbert Ayongo.

He said on Friday, April 7, at about 06:30 hours, the complainants were detailed to manage traffic at the Assin-Fosu old market stretch of the highway where they spotted the convict who was in charge of Hyundai Atos Taxi with registration No. CR 1157-20.

The prosecutor said while the vehicles were in motion, the convict stopped at an undesignated place to solicit for and pick up passengers without reasonable consideration to other road users.

According to the prosecutor, the police officers approached the convict and cautioned him not to pick up passengers at the place, and directed him to leave with his passengers immediately.

But the convict was adamant and replied that he would continue to pick up passengers from that spot until the police arrested all other drivers who did the same.

Barley an hour later, Chief Inspector Ayongo said the convict returned to the same location with impunity which led to his arrest.

He said the officers sat in the vehicle of the convict to be driven to the Regional MTTD office but he instead, drove the officers to an unknown destination and attempted to escape.

He was immediately rearrested and while resisting the arrest, bit the finger of General Constable Ayamba, inflicting severe injuries on his hand, the prosecutor told the court.

The prosecutor said a civilian motor rider who witnessed the incident quickly picked up the injured police officer and chased the convict who drove the vehicle into the nearby bush, abandoned it, and absconded.

The two officers returned to the office and reported the incident to ASP Mr. Wonder Lumor, the Central North Regional MTTD Commander, who deployed two plain-clothed policemen and CID officers to the scene.

He said about an hour later, the convict emerged in the company of two others, and he was arrested to assist with investigations.

A thorough check on the vehicle and documents revealed that the convict had failed to validate his driver’s license since Tuesday, February 1, 2022, and was driving a commercial vehicle at an unauthorized age of 24, instead of 25 years and above.

Also, he was driving a commercial vehicle without a spare tyre, warning signals, fire extinguisher, and others.

  • Amanda Cartey writes: A brush with crime; my experience outsmarting a thieving taxi driver

Amanda Cartey writes: A brush with crime; my experience outsmarting a thieving taxi driver

In the past few years, I have heard many stories about people’s experiences with taxi robberies but I always thought it was just a tale.

They talked about how taxi drivers tricked them by locking the car doors and stealing their money and phones from their bags and purses. Unfortunately, I soon discovered that I was not far from experiencing this uncivilised behaviour of some drivers in town.

One day, a taxi driver offered me a free ride from Dzorwulu Junction to Achimota Overhead. I was heading to Achimota Mile 7. The plan was to continue my journey from the Achimota Overhead to Mile 7.

I hopped into the taxi with my luggage in a white polythene bag and a brown purse containing my phone and some cash.

Our journey to Achimota Overhead began at 11 am, and the driver engaged me in a conversation. He suggested that I should pay him to take me to Achimota Mile 7 but I insisted that he should ‘let me off’ at the Achimota Overhead because it would still be convenient for me to continue my journey from there.

In less than 15 minutes, we arrived at Achimota Overhead and I needed to get out of the taxi. But that was when the drama and the trickery by the taxi driver began.

The taxi had stopped; so, I tried to open the door to alight from the car but the door would not open. For a moment, I focused on trying to get the door opened – which meant that I had abandoned my purse and luggage on my thighs, and my backside was halfway facing the driver, while I struggled to open the door.

I am sure that was when the criminal taxi driver attempted to silently snatch my purse from my thighs to himself so he could steal my phone and money but he did not succeed because I also gave up and insisted that he open the door for me.

Then he asked me for a coin, which he claimed could help with opening the gate. So, I quickly grabbed my purse, which was lying halfway on my seat open, and my phone was almost falling out.

Seeing that his unscrupulous plan would not be successful, he opened the door for me to come out of the taxi. Apparently, the drivers control the doors from where they sit, so when they steal your items, they ‘release’ the door from their end and allow you to go.

Hmmm… Now, as soon as I came out of the taxi, I realized that the taxi driver was trying to steal from me. I thanked God for exempting me from the plan of this wicked taxi driver.

My journey continued in another public transport to Achimota Mile 7, where I met my friends and shared with them what happened to me.

I was shocked to hear that Abigail and Diana had also experienced the same thing before.

Unfortunately, the drivers succeeded in stealing their phones and cash. Eiii….thieves are smart o! Hmm

I felt it was important to share my experience on WhatsApp so my friends and family could learn from it to avoid similar situations. I was grateful to receive some feedback from them as well!

I, therefore, want to share some guidelines to help others avoid this kind of experience.

Avoid the front seat of taxis at all costs if you can. If you must sit in the front seat, make sure your items (bag, phone, purse etc) are placed on your right side close to the door.

Don’t go through the stress of opening a car door if it’s refuses to open. If you try once and it doesn’t open, insist that the driver opens it for you.

Be suspicious about a driver who will ask for coins to help him open a door and stay away from that trap!

Let’s all stay safe out there!

Immediately, she said she drew his attention to it but got the response from the driver that he was only using a shorter route.

Speaking to GhanaWeb over the phone, she continued that while on the GIMPA road, the driver told her he wanted to attend to nature’s call and then he suddenly parked by the roadside.

“Suddenly, two men emerged from the bush and entered the car. Together with the driver, they then drove me into the bushes and asked for my monies and phone. With a knife pointed at me, I emptied my bag and handed everything to them.

“They then asked me to log out of my iCloud and subsequently took my mobile phone Mobile Money PIN from me,” she narrated.

Speaking from her hospital bed at the Greater Accra Regional Hospital (Ridge Hospital), where she is receiving treatment ahead of a surgery, she said things did not end there.

Diana stressed that the driver then drove to a spot around the John Teye Memorial School and they forced her out of the car, and into the bushes.

She explained that they sexually molested her before harming her physically with a sharp object.

“Not satisfied, they drove me all the way to the bushes around John Teye Memorial School, and stripped me naked and threatened to kill me. They then inflicted deep cuts on my hands and in my palm before they fled the scene,” she said.

According to Diana, some inhabitants heard her shouts from the bush and came to her rescue. They then sent her to the Ridge Hospital.

  • Western Regional Minister explains why he responded to ‘missing GH¢17m galamsey money’ post

The Western Regional Minister, Kwabena Okyere Darko-Mensah, has explained why he responded to a social media post by GHOne TV about a regional minister fainting after a driver stole his GH¢17 million even though his name was not mentioned in the post.

The post by GHOne TV reported that a regional minister collapsed after his driver bolted away with the stated amount, said to be proceeds from illegal mining (galamsey).

“A Regional Minister collapses as his driver bolts with 17 million cedis galamsey proceeds. Driver is reported to be in Ivory Coast at the moment,” parts of the post by GHOne read.

Responding to this post, Kwabena Okyere Darko-Mensah denied any link to the report.

In a press statement, he said that the news linking him to the report is bent on tarnishing his hard-won reputation.

“This news alert appears to cast an innuendo on my person. It is therefore not strange that for those who are still bent on tarnishing my hard-won reputation and to distract me from executing my official duties in service to the people of my region including my unrelenting fight against illegal mining in the region, they have jumped onto this news alert to further their sinister objectives,” parts of the statement noted.

Speaking in an interview on Asempa FM on October 19, 2022, which was monitored by GhanaWeb, Okyere Darko-Mensah said that he had to respond because he had issues with some parts of the post.

He added that he had spoken to the Chief Executive Officer of the EIB Network, Nathan Kwabena Anokye Adisi, a.k.a. Bola Ray, to get the matter resolved.

“You see, when people are not sure of things, they should not disgrace people or create funny impressions in the minds of people. Because somebody may not even verify the facts and accept the allegations that are being made, which will create problems for you.

“That is why we had to tackle it so that next time people will think twice before making allegations.

“If you look at the second part of the post, there is something in it that we dealing with. After the post was shown to me, I contacted Bola Ray and he said he will cross-check the facts and get to me. And so, we are waiting,” he said in Twi.

  • DVLA introduces digital technologies to check drivers, vehicles

The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) has introduced some five key digital appliances in its operations to ensure a regulated framework for an enhanced and a more effective supervision of drivers and vehicles.

They comprise the vehicle windscreen glasses tint meter, handbrake tester, hand-held tablet computer, tyre tread depth gauge and tyre air presser gauge.

Obuasi station is the first to take delivery of the hand-held tools, while all 32 district offices across the country are to receive the kits for effective operations.

The DVLA says the appliances will help detect approved tinted windscreens, test the brake efficiency of a vehicle, and get instant access to a driver’s particulars upon keying in their registration and certificate of competence numbers to establish the authenticity or otherwise.

In the past, most driver offenders were let off the hook because the authority lacked these standard gadgets to strengthen their checks on the road.

The Compliance and Enforcement Manager of DVLA, Richard Kwasi Eyiah, explained that “after all checks are carried out on a vehicle, an automated gadget instantly issues out a receipt to the driver to know the status of the car as to whether it passed the test or not”.

    Field demonstration

The Appliance and Enforcement Unit of the DVLA, last Thursday (September 29), organised a brief demonstration of the tools to the media in Kumasi and later moved on to the streets to test their innovative kits on drivers and vehicles.

During the field demonstration, it was detected that some vehicles had issues, but no arrests were made.

However, the DVLA field officers urged the drivers to update their papers, as well as put their vehicles in shape in order not to fall foul of the law.

    Enforcement

Mr Eyiah in a post-test run interview said the tools would be used effectively to ensure compliance on the roads to ensure maximum safety on the roads with only roadworthy vehicles.

“Road rules will only be obeyed if drivers are made aware that not obeying them would result in detection and unwanted outcomes such as fines or licence suspension or cancellation.

“With these gadgets, there will be no hiding place for recalcitrant drivers,” he emphasised.

Mr Eyiah used the opportunity to commend the government for resourcing the authority which had enabled it to play its role more efficiently.

  • Refrain from increasing fares Driver associations told

The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) of TUC has called for a ceasefire on the proposed increase in transport fares.

National Chairman Nana Nimako Bresiama has pleaded with the various driver association to refrain from increasing the transport fares at least until the government forms his ministers.

Some driver associations had threatened to increase transportation.

The National Association of Concerned Drivers with over 150,000 members, for instance, has projected a 10 percent increment in fares by next week as members complain about hikes in fuel prices and spare parts.

Speaking on Akoma FMs morning show GhanAkoma, GPRTU National Chairman Nana Nimako Bresiama called for ceasefire till the Transport Minister-designate is confirmed and the subsequent consensus is reached met by major stakeholders in the industry.

He told host Aduanaba Kofi Asante Ennin that “the government has not even finished forming his cabinet and other ministers, so why the rush?”

“I think the various driver associations must exercise restraint until the Road Minister-designate is confirmed then we can have a roundtable discussion on the situation. As it stands I believe the proposal is premature.”

Meanwhile, Public Relations Officer for True Drivers Union Yaw Barima believes that government has increased prices of fuel through some means but has always resisted their call to increase fares.

Spokesperson for the National Concerned Drivers Association David Agboado explained his group is not relenting on the decision to increase the fare.

“I wish to announce to cherished clients that there will be 10% increment of passenger fare coming Monday,” he said, adding that “this decision was informed by the increment of some taxes at the DVLA and the ports.”

From Dominase to Daboase and Asamasa, Ahmed continued to overtake from all sides of the road while driving at top speed and on the shoulders of the road.

Chief Superintendent Richard Appiah said after his arrest, his vehicle was impounded and brought to the MTTD office in Sekondi. His statement was taken in which he admitted to driving recklessly.

He has subsequently been processed for court on Monday, February 10.
