Fatal boat accident on Volta lake leaves nine dead

A fatal boat accident on the Volta Lake in the East Gonja District has claimed the lives of nine persons. The deceased include women and children, reports indicate that the incident occurred on Wednesday, April 8, between Sikakope and Mataiko along the Yeji–Congo route.

Rough weather conditions are said to have caused the boat, which was carrying 14 passengers, to capsize. Meanwhile, rescue team have been able save five male passengers.

While Ghana has some drowning prevention initiatives, such as regional lifejacket policies, critical measures like water safety education in schools and community rescue training remain limited.
The lack of flood risk management strategies further exacerbates the issue. Globally, drowning remains a significant public health issue. The first-ever Global Status Report on Drowning Prevention by the World Health Organization (WHO) details progress made in addressing drowning fatalities worldwide.
The report notes that the global drowning death rate declined by 38 percent between 2000 and 2021. However, more than 300,000 fatalities were still recorded in 2021, underscoring the severity of the problem.

In June this year, some seven students from Lawra Senior High School (SHS) lost their lives after the boat they were travelling on capsized on the Black Volta River at Dikpe.

The unfortunate incident that claimed the lives of five girls and two boys occurred on Saturday, June 14, during a routine morning jogging exercise.
Per reports, the group of 10, part of the school’s cadet corps, was attempting to cross in an overloaded boat.
Three other students were rescued and provided medical care as well as psychological support. According to reports, early morning jogging is a regular activity for the cadet team; however, the rationale behind the group’s attempt to cross the river remains unclear.

Reacting to the unfortunate incident, the Education Minister, Haruna Iddrisu, has instructed that a meeting be convened and its findings reported to him. The Education Ministry has commiserated with the bereaved families as investigations continue.

“We share in the grief of the affected families and the entire school community. Our thoughts and prayers are with them in this extremely difficult time.

As the Ministry awaits a full report from the Ghana Police Service, we wish to assure Ghanaians that we will continue to do our best to ensure the safety and security of our students,” a statement signed by the Deputy Education Minister, Dr Clement Apaak, read.

This is not the first time lives, especially those of students, have been lost to drowning on the Black Volta.

In 2023, some eight students drowned in the Volta Lake in the Sene East District on their way to school. This prompted calls on the government to provide life jackets to pupils and staff in island communities who commute by water.

Eduwatch Africa called on the Ghana Education Service and other relevant stakeholders to roll out measures to avert such disasters in the future.

“In the immediate term, we urge the Ghana Education Service (GES) to facilitate the availability of life jackets to all school children and staff who sail to and from school, not only in the Sene East District, but all other ‘island and settler communities’ where children and staff commute by water transport to school.

“The GES should, in collaboration with the relevant state agencies, facilitate health and safety orientation sessions for all its pupils and staff in island communities,” portions of the group’s statement read.

The Ghana Education Service (GES) donated 100 life jackets and learning materials to the Atigagorme and Wayokope communities in the Sene East District.
Then Director-General of GES, Dr Eric Nkansah, said the donation was an interim safety and security measure for school children. Appearing before Parliament on Wednesday, July 2, the Minister responsible for Interior, Honourable Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka, revealed a number of measures the government and its agencies will put in place to check the rate of drowning incidents involving students and others in rural areas.

This follows the recent boat incident along the Black Volta Basin that claimed the lives of seven students of Lawra Senior High School (SHS) on June 14.

The sector minister noted that there will be regular sensitisation of canoe owners and operators, as well as residents along the Black Volta Basin, and sensitisation of students and identifiable bodies on maritime safety.

He added that the Ghana Maritime Authority will provide life jackets to canoe operators along the river, conduct regular monitoring of canoe operators to ensure safety on the river, and ensure all canoes are regularly maintained.

A tragic incident unfolded on Wednesday, April 10, 2024, in Kwahu Tafo, Eastern Region, where a four-year-old child drowned in a well during the afternoon hours.

Local sources reported that the young boy was fetching water from the well when he was unexpectedly pulled into its depths by the bucket he was using.

Witnesses described the heartbreaking scene as other children who were present at the time rushed home in tears to alert the family about the distressing incident.

Following the retrieval of the boy’s body from the well, police were yet to transport it to the morgue at the time of the report filing.

Given the tender age of the child, concerns were raised about the parental supervision, as it appeared negligent to allow him to fetch water unattended.

The Children’s Act 560,(1998) states that “Every parent has rights and responsibilities whether imposed by law or otherwise towards his child which include the duty to: protect the child from neglect, discrimination, violence, abuse, exposure to physical and moral hazards and oppression”.

As reported by Kasapa News, the unfortunate event unfolded on the morning of Tuesday, April 2, 2024.

The victim, Paa Kwesi, accompanied by three friends, all under the age of thirteen, ventured into a marshy area in search of crabs.

While engaged in their crab hunting expedition, the group sought relief from the scorching weather by taking a dip in a nearby river.

However, tragedy struck when Paa Kwesi jumped into the water but failed to resurface.

His three companions, assuming he had returned home, continued their activities without raising an alarm.

It wasn’t until they arrived home, having sent Paa Kwesi’s slippers ahead, that they realized he was missing. Despite their discovery, they chose not to notify anyone of the incident.

Concerned about her son’s absence, Paa Kwesi’s mother reported the situation to the authorities and sought assistance from local radio stations and information centers. Unfortunately, their efforts to locate the missing boy proved futile.

According to Amankwah, the pupil sought permission from school authorities to purchase food outside the premises on that Saturday afternoon.

However, upon reaching the bridge spanning the Dwahyen River, the pupil encountered friends engaged in swimming.

Enticed to join them, tragedy unfolded as the pupil drowned, and attempts by his friends to rescue him proved futile, as they also faced difficulties in the water.

Despite their distress, the friends raised an alarm. Masons working nearby rushed to the scene but found the boy had already been swept away by the river.

  • Florida woman devastated after husband and two children drown in pool at home

A Florida woman is mourning the tragic loss of her husband and their two children after they drowned in their family pool.

According to WSVN, local officials responded to the family’s Hollywood residence on February 24 after Anne Marie Dolce found her husband, Jean Wisly Fontus, and their two children unresponsive in their family swimming pool.

The deceased minors were identified as five-year-old Emmie and Tyler, 2.

“Just after 3:30, the Hollywood Police Department received a 911 call for a possible drowning. When officers arrived on scene they found 3 people who were unresponsive.  It was an adult and two children,” Hollywood Police Spokeswoman Deanna Bettineschi said, per CBS Miami.

    Related stories

Officers who arrived attempted resuscitating Fontus and his two children by performing CPR and other life-saving techniques. They were later pronounced dead after they were transported to a hospital.

“They were all full of love, it’s the only word I can use to describe it: love,” Dolce told WSVN. “The reality of the situation is what’s really heavy and hard.”

The grieving wife and mother also said it was typical of her husband and kids to take daily afternoon dips in the pool. “They typically play in the yard and the pool, painting activities, they would ride their bikes on the patio or on the sidewalk,” Dolce said.

The tragic incident is being investigated by Hollywood Police. And though officials are yet to establish the circumstances surrounding their deaths, they said they do not believe there was any foul play.

A GoFundMe that was set up by Dolce provided further insight into the incident. “Like any other day, Wes, Emmie and Tyler went for their last swim together in the family’s pool. We imagine that they played in the pool, Emmie and Tyler climbing onto and splashing water at dad as always,” she said.

“At some point, something happened that caused that fun time to come to a sudden end. We may never know how, and we will surely never understand why, but we are comforted in knowing that Dad, Emmie, and Tyler are together in Heaven in the loving hands of God.”

Dolce also shared fond memories of her deceased husband and children. “‘I like your hair. I like your dress. That baby is so cute.’ It’s just the way she spoke and who she was, very loving,” she said about Emmie, adding that her brother Tyler was a usual two-year-old.

“He [Tyler] thought he was some sort of superhero, but he was my superhero,” she said. Dolce also referred to her husband as the life of the party.

“This was a party. It was always a party here. Music was blaring, and everyone was always invited,” she recalled.

The GoFundMe account has so far raised over $50,000, surpassing the $40,000 goal.

  • Mother, three children drown in pit on lagoon at Laklevikope

A woman, aged 41, has drowned along with her three children in a pit dug in the Keta Lagoon at Laklevikope, near Aflao, in the Ketu South Municipality.

The deceased, Madam Yawa Apenu on Saturday fell off into the pit together with her two children, Bridget Amewu, 14, Daddy Amewu, 10 and another child, who stayed with the family, Sitsofe Ahiawor, 8, while they reportedly went fishing.

Of the five, who went fishing, Mr Atitso Amewu, husband to the deceased woman was the only person who managed to escape death.

Some residents, who spoke to the Ghana News Agency (GNA), suspected that the pit that claimed the lives of the four might have been the creation of Seven Seas Salt Limited, which had uncompleted a dyke on its concessions in the area.

Barely two months ago, two people reportedly drowned along the stretch of the lagoon, while they attempted to fish.

Mr Victor Ayaku, Assembly member for the area, in an earlier interview with the GNA following the first drowning incident in early July, complained that “there’s no form of protection around the dykes, no demarcation and it’s almost like a death trap” to unsuspecting residents who might want to go fishing in the lagoon.

Mr Adams Mensah, the Public Relations Officer, Seven Seas Salt Limited, in a reaction, noted that the Company was not responsible for Saturday’s disaster.

He said the pit was outside the company’s concession and that it was a fish pond, belonging to an individual and not known to the Company.

Regretting the loss of lives, he disclosed that the salt mining company was ready to support the family of the deceased.

He underscored the need for collaboration between them and stakeholders, especially Assembly members of communities in which the Company had concessions to forestall such avoidable deaths.

Mr Mensah said though the Company had constructed danger signposts, which it would start mounting on its concessions from Monday to ward off people and fishers from deep pit areas, there was still the need for education for the people to use sticks to test the depth of the water while fishing to avoid unfortunate situations because there was individual fish ponds created in the lagoon.

Meanwhile, a Police source, who confirmed the incident, said the bodies have been deposited at the morgue for preservation, while a meeting is scheduled with the family of the deceased Sunday afternoon to help in investigations.

The incident occurred around 3:00 pm Sunday, January 17, 2020.

It is not clear how he fell into the stagnant water in the Nsukwao drainage facility under construction.

Some residents conjectured that he might have slipped while walking along the slope of the excavated drainage facility.

It was observed that the contractor has not cordoned off the project site, neither erected warning signs exposing residents particularly children in the area to danger.

Residents fear if the construction site is not cordoned off with adequate warning signs, many fatalities may be recorded.

They also called on the contractor to speed up work for the project to be completed before the rainy season.

The GH¢15.81million Nsukwao Basin drainage project, which is under the Ghana Secondary Cities Support Programme (GSCSP), and is funded by the World Bank was expected to be completed within six months however this seems unrealistic considering the slow paste of work.

The project also involves the installation of four stormwater surface retention ponds distributed along the Nsukwao River, flow facilities, channelization, and streambank stabilization; concrete pipes and culverts, with two access roads

The project when completed would end the perennial flood in the New Juaben North and South Municipalities.
