Leave the collation centres and return home – NDC directs members

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has called on its members, agents, and supporters stationed at collation centres across the country to withdraw and return home.

The directive comes as the party expresses appreciation for their vigilance during the electoral process.

In a statement issued on December 10, signed by NDC General Secretary Fifi Kwetey, the party thanked its supporters for their dedication to safeguarding the integrity of the elections. However, it emphasized the need for members to trust the leadership and technical team to handle the rest of the collation and declaration process.

“This is the time to trust the leadership and the technical staff of our great party to fully manage the rest of the process. Our team of experienced professionals is fully prepared and equipped to ensure that every aspect of the collation and declaration process is handled diligently and transparently,” the statement read.

The announcement follows rising tensions at certain collation centres, particularly at the Accra regional collation centre, where delays in declaring the Ablekuma North constituency results have caused unease among party supporters.

The NDC reassured its members of their commitment to upholding the will of the people and ensuring that every vote cast for the party is protected. The statement urged supporters to remain calm, confident, and focused, as the leadership works to secure victory.

“Your role in this process has been invaluable, and we urge you to remain united and resolute as we work in your interest,” it concluded.

The party remains optimistic that the results will reflect the choice of the Ghanaian people, pledging to handle the final phases of the process diligently.

Election 2024 winner announced by EC in the absence of 9 constituencies results

The Electoral Commission of Ghana declared John Dramani Mahama as the winner of the 2024 presidential election, despite the absence of results from nine constituencies due to delays in the collation process.

According to Mrs. Mensa, the delay was caused by the presence of political party supporters at the collation centers in these constituencies, which disrupted the process.

Nevertheless, she assured that the final outcome of the 2024 presidential election had been established, even without the inclusion of those results.

“The results from the 267 constituencies, including the newly created one, have conclusively established the winner,” she stated.

In a direct response to concerns about those results, she added: “Even if all the votes from the nine constituencies (947,000 votes) were added to the candidate who placed second, it would not change the outcome of the election.”

Mrs. Mensa reassured citizens that the Electoral Commission would provide updates to its records once the presidential results from the nine remaining constituencies were received.

Although the situation remains subject to change, she emphasized that the credibility of the election outcome is firmly upheld despite the ongoing delay.

Jean Mensa, the EC chairperson and returning officer, reported that Mr. John Mahama secured 6,328,397 votes, accounting for 56.55%, while Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the vice president and NPP’s presidential candidate, garnered 4,657,304 votes, representing 41.61%.

The margin of difference between Mr. Mahama’s total and Dr. Bawumia’s is 1,671,093 votes.

According to Jean Mensa, the total number of valid votes cast was 11,191,422, with 239,109 ballots rejected.

The total number of votes cast in the 2024 elections was 11,430,531. However, the electoral register listed a total of 18,774,159 eligible voters.

The voter turnout rate for the 2024 elections was 60.9%, based on data from 267 constituencies.

  • Provisional results recorded so far

    Provisional results recorded so far

Provistional results from Ghana’s 2024 general elections are being announced from all 276 constituencies across the country.

Early numbers suggest a tight race between the two major parties — the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) — in both the presidential and parliamentary elections.

Smaller parties are trailing far behind the two leading contenders, as the race becomes more focused on these two major players.

Some constituencies are drawing national attention because their results could influence the final outcome of the elections.

Over 18 million voters participated in this election, with voting taking place at 40,648 polling stations nationwide.

A total of 12 candidates ran for the presidency, while 801 individuals — including 118 women — competed for parliamentary seats.

Although ballot sorting and counting are still ongoing in some areas, here’s what the numbers are showing so far:

2024 polls: Don’t pay attention to divisive and false prophecies, choose peace – Otumfuo

Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has advised Ghanaians to disregard false prophecies that could jeopardise the nation’s peace and stability ahead of the December 2024 elections.

Delivering the Asantehene’s message at the annual prayer gathering on November 29, the Chief of Sewua, Nana Kwaku Amankwa Sarkodie, called on religious leaders to focus on fostering national unity rather than making predictions that could incite tension or chaos.

He further stressed the importance of vigilance in safeguarding the country’s peace, particularly during the election period.

“Ghanaians must focus on what unites us and ignore divisive and false prophecies,” he stated.

The Asantehene’s message comes as a timely reminder of the role of both citizens and religious leaders in maintaining a stable and harmonious environment during this critical period in the nation’s history.

“We will be going to the polls very soon. Otumfuo said I should tell you some individuals are engaging in false prophecies.

Some claim to be making prophecies to favour the New Patriotic Party (NPP), while others also make prophecies to favour the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

“They have all forgotten that they have people among their followers who belong to different political parties and also hold different views,” Nana Kwaku Amankwa Sarkodie said.

The annual prayer gathering also featured intercessory prayers for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party.

Meanwhile, schoolchildren in Kumasi took to the streets to advocate for peace, emphasising the importance of unity during the electoral period.

These calls for peace have gained momentum following the signing of a peace pact by political parties, reaffirming their commitment to ensuring a peaceful election.

  • I assure you that, on Dec 7th, I will hand over to whoever Ghanaians choose – Akufo-Addo

I assure you that, on Dec 7th, I will hand over to whoever Ghanaians choose – Akufo-Addo

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has affirmed his commitment to a smooth and peaceful transfer of power, vowing to hand over leadership to the winner of Ghana’s 2024 general elections as determined by the electorate.

Addressing the gathering at the Anlo Hogbetsotso Za festival on November 2, Akufo-Addo emphasised his dedication to ensuring that the December 7 elections will be free, fair, transparent, and peaceful.

He also extended his gratitude to the chiefs and people of Anlo for their consistent support and prayers throughout his presidency, recognizing their role in maintaining stability.

Additionally, he expressed heartfelt appreciation to Ghanaians nationwide for upholding peace during his administration.

“As we all know, without peace, there can be no proper development. The peace we are currently enjoying is the peace that we will carry through to the elections on 7th December.

“I want to assure the people of Anlo, the people of the Volta region, and the people of Ghana that the elections, the forthcoming elections in December, are going to be free, fair, transparent, and peaceful.

“And on the 7th of December, I will hand over the baton of national leadership to whoever the people of Ghana choose to succeed me.”

  • Election 2024: Education, employment and healthcare will influence voters’ choice – NCCE

Election 2024: Education, employment and healthcare will influence voters’ choice – NCCE

The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has highlighted education, employment, and healthcare as the primary concerns for voters as the 2024 elections approach.

In its latest report, the NCCE reveals that many voters are particularly focused on issues related to the Free Senior High School (SHS) policy, while younger voters are increasingly worried about job opportunities.

At the report’s launch, Dr. Henrietta Sarpong, the NCCE’s Director of Research, Monitoring, and Evaluation, underscored that these areas consistently rank as key priorities for the electorate.

She expressed concern over the persistent issues in these sectors, indicating that they reflect the voters’ ongoing dissatisfaction and their demand for better policies and services.

“The top five ranked issues were education, employment, health, roads and infrastructure and issues related to the economy. Those were the top five, the others were the middle, and then we have sports and climate change.

“There’s a lot of talk on climate change and most of you will attest to the fact that Ghanaians are not too cool in terms of climate change and ICT.

“Across regions, we have four regions having the same picture as the national as in the issues that are of concern to Ashanti, Central, Savannah. The others have issues which were different from the top five. Across the issue of Gender, the top five issues we see in this graph are the fact that for education, employment, and health, women and females are more concerned about addressing these issues.

“When it comes to roads and infrastructure, the men are keen on that. When it comes to the economy, and inflation among others, we have more females than males. Then we also try to compare across age groups and we find those within the 20-39 age group.

“I know that population was the highest, but on average, those within the working bracket are very keen about the issues,” he stated.

  • I assure you, LGBTQ+ would never happen in this country – Bawumia

I assure you, LGBTQ+ would never happen in this country – Bawumia

Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has reiterated his firm opposition to the acceptance of LGBTQ+ practices in Ghana, asserting that such activities are in conflict with the nation’s religious and cultural foundations.

Addressing a gathering of clergy, traditional leaders, and key stakeholders during his tour of Anyinam in the Eastern Region, Dr. Bawumia stressed that neither the Bible, the Quran, nor Ghanaian traditions endorse LGBTQ+ behaviors.

Following the commissioning of a new constituency office by Atewa East Member of Parliament Abena Osei Asare, Dr. Bawumia reassured the audience that the NPP, under his leadership, would staunchly resist any efforts to introduce LGBTQ+ ideologies into Ghanaian society, regardless of any external pressure or associated costs.

“Nananom, recently there have been some issues about the introduction of LGBTQ, which advocates for same-sex marriages; that thing will never happen in this country; we won’t allow such to occur here in Ghana.

“It is not in the Bible and Quran too, it is not also in our tradition, culture, or values so we will stand firm and resist its introduction no matter the cost, we won’t agree for it to destroy our country,” he stated.

On the issue of galamsey, Dr Bawumia responding to calls from the traditional leaders on streamlining the activities to mitigate the pollution of water bodies and destruction of forest reserves, said a licencing regime for mining will be granted locally with chiefs being key partners in the issuance of the mining licence.

“I want to bring a new regime into the small-scale mining sector. We need to formalise its licences and also introduce community mining schemes.

“With this licensing regime, it will not be centralised in Accra; we will decentralise it to the local people and the chiefs. Nananom will be a key part of granting licenses,” he added.

Election 2024: Presidential results to be announced for individual region separately – EC

Deputy Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), Dr Eric Bossman Asare, has announced that the Commission will declare the regional presidential results from all 16 regions before announcing the national results in the upcoming December 7 elections.

According to Dr Bossman Asare, this decision is intended to enhance transparency during the polls.

Speaking at the launch of the Coalition of Domestic Election Observers (CODEO) Election Monitoring System, Dr Bossman Asare emphasised the EC’s commitment to ensuring a free and fair election.

“For the presidential election, after the polling station, all the results from the polling stations will be taken to the constituency coalition centres. So from the constituency coalition centre, then all the results will now go to the regional coalition centres.

“So what the commission is doing is that we are going to announce presidential results for each region. We will announce presidential results for each region. And the parties are well aware.”

  • Election 2024: EC optimistic about exceeding 79% voter turnout

Election 2024: EC optimistic about exceeding 79% voter turnout

Electoral Commission (EC) has expressed optimism about improving voter turnout in this year’s elections.

While several polls have suggested potential voter apathy, Dr. Bossman Asare, the Deputy Chair of the Commission in Charge of Corporate Services, confidently stated at a Democracy and Governance Forum hosted by the West Africa Democracy Radio in Accra that the EC is determined to surpass the 79% turnout recorded in the 2020 elections.

“As far as the Electoral Commission is concerned, we were ready for the elections yesterday,” Dr. Asare said. “We believe that with the measures we have put in place, Ghana is set for another successful general election.”

He emphasised the importance of encouraging citizens to participate in the electoral process.

“In 2020, we recorded a turnout of just over 79%. This year, we aim to exceed that. We expect every registered voter to go out and exercise their right to vote,” he added.

Dr. Asare also addressed concerns regarding the transparency of the commission’s operations, assuring the public that steps are being taken to ensure the election’s credibility.

“From the registration process to everything we do, we collaborate with the political parties. In 2020, the commission spent six months compiling a new voter register and conducting the elections.

We learnt a lot from that experience and are committed to ensuring a peaceful process this time around,” he explained.

In total, approximately 18.7 million Ghanaians are expected to cast their ballots on December 7.

Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has urged Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen, leader of the Movement for Change and a presidential candidate, to prioritise a campaign centred on policies rather than personal attacks ahead of the December 7 elections.

The Asantehene shared this counsel during Kyerematen’s visit to the Manhyia Palace on Wednesday, October 2, where he sought the backing of the Ashanti Region.

Otumfuo emphasised the need for a campaign focused on policies that would improve the lives of Ghanaians, cautioning against the use of insults and divisive rhetoric.

“All I will say is that Alan Kyerematen is my grandson, and I will support his vision. I will urge you to clearly explain your policies to Ghanaians so they understand what you’re capable of.

Focus on your campaign and your messages and desist from politics of insult.”

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II urged Alan Kyerematen to focus his presidential campaign on substantive issues that resonate with the concerns of Ghanaians.

The Asantehene made this recommendation when Kyerematen, leader of the Movement for Change, visited the Manhyia Palace on Wednesday, October 2, to garner support from the people of the Ashanti Region.

In response, Kyerematen expressed his gratitude for the Asantehene’s advice, vowing to conduct a campaign based on policies rather than personal attacks.

He reaffirmed his dedication to addressing the key challenges facing the nation and emphasised the values of his movement.

Additionally, Kyerematen introduced his running mate to the Asantehene, seeking the blessing and backing of the region’s traditional leadership as he prepares for the election.

Election 2024: Akufo-Addo promises a fair election at UN General Assembly

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has assured the international community that Ghana’s upcoming general elections will be free, fair, and transparent.

He reaffirmed the nation’s dedication to upholding democratic values and the rule of law, outlining the steps being taken to safeguard the integrity of the electoral process.

Speaking during the world leaders’ address at the annual UN General Assembly in New York on Wednesday, he stated, “As my presidency draws to a close, I want to assure this assembly that the upcoming 2024 elections in Ghana will be free, fair and transparent.

We will return all seized excavators if we win 2024 elections – NAPO promises

New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) vice presidential candidate, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, has promised that all confiscated excavators from the government’s crackdown on illegal mining will be returned under a future NPP administration.

Addressing chiefs and locals in Prestea Huni Valley and Mpohor in the Western Region, Dr. Prempeh stressed that NPP flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has no plans to outlaw small-scale mining.

His remarks come amidst growing calls for the government to ban small-scale mining due to the severe environmental impact, particularly the pollution of water bodies.

Dr. Prempeh reassured the mining communities that the NPP is focused on supporting small-scale miners, provided their activities are environmentally responsible.

He emphasised the party’s preference for regulating the sector over imposing a blanket ban.

“When the small-scale miners mine, they are able to get money to fend for their families. Small-scale miners vote for the NDC to win about 6 seats in Wassa, but now they [the NDC] say they will shoot and kill small-scale miners. Tell them the lies are enough. We will not shoot and kill anyone.

“We will give all seized excavators to you so you can do your work peacefully. This will help everyone to get money to fend for themselves and also for the community to develop. Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia will not collapse small-scale mining.

What we do not like is that you put a changfan on water bodies, but anyone interested in the government’s community mining scheme will be able to mine.”

  • Election 2024: Judge urges politicians to accept results and not rely on courts to decide winners

Election 2024: Judge urges politicians to accept results and not rely on courts to decide winners

A High Court Justice, Justice Anna Taylor has called on Ghanaians, particularly politicians, to accept election results declared at polling stations, emphasizing that it is not the court’s role to announce election winners.

During her speech at the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre’s Stakeholder Dialogue Series in Kumasi, Justice Taylor highlighted the need for thorough education on Ghana’s electoral system.

She acknowledged that while there is general recognition that elections are decided at the polling stations, there remains a common tendency to turn to the judiciary for resolving disputes.

“If the necessary education has gone on, the parties involved, [they] should also be ready to accept the results because I hear people say over and over again that elections are won at the polling stations.

But, of course, they know where the elections are won, at the end of the day, they want to go to the court for the courts to pronounce who has won.

So, we must understand the law, understand how they operate, and I believe if there is a trust system, then everything will go on smoothly”, Justice Taylor said.

She also noted that delays in resolving election disputes are often due to the necessary legal timelines and procedures but assured that the Judicial Service is equipped to handle such matters effectively.

“People may expect that, immediately the petition is filed, within three days, everything must be resolved, it is not possible, because you should remember, there are even timelines. When you should even file your petition, the law has spelled it. Then when it is filed, the other party must respond.

It all comes within time frames that have been set…but of course, the courts can manage its time, and allot more time to matters that are pending and give some priority to the election petition.”

“The Judicial Service is ready, and the forums for resolving disputes are already available and when you look at the law, at times, it’s as if we, we are looking forward to having disputes and the law itself is ready to accommodate disputes”, the High Court Judge remarked.

2024 polls: PNC petitions EC against certification of PNP over similar party emblem

People’s National Convention (PNC) has requested that the Electoral Commission (EC) delay issuing the final certificate for the registration of the People’s National Party (PNP).

In a statement sent to the EC on July 16, the PNC’s solicitors raised concerns about the name PNP, noting that it closely resembles the PNC, the party that emerged from the PNP.

They argue that this similarity could potentially confuse voters.

“The use of the palm nut tree as an emblem for the newly formed party PNP will further confuse the electorates leaving them to believe that the PNC and PNP are one and the same.”

“Since the executives of the PNP are former executives of the PNC, together with the history between the erstwhile PNP and PNC earlier canvassed, it will leave no doubt in the minds of electorates that the new PNP and PNC are one and the same,” the statement read.

CPP to present presidential and 276 parliamentary candidates for December polls

Contrary to earlier reports, the Conventions People’s Party (CPP) has indicated it will present a presidential candidate in the upcoming December 7 elections.

In line with that the party has scheduled a congress in August to elect its flagbearer.

Last week, Acting Communication Director of the party, Sylvester Sarpong-Suprano, stated in an interview with an Accra-based FM station that they would not be fielding a presidential candidate due to delays in internal processes to elect national executives, just five months before the polls.

However, addressing journalists on July 3 in Accra, the party vehemently refuted these earlier reports. The Coordinator of the National Reorganizational Committee, Moses Yirimambo Ambing, emphasized that as the party that founded Ghana, it is imperative for the CPP to participate in the December 7 elections.

Ambing further stated that the Independent Committee is constitutionally mandated to ensure the selection of a candidate, affirming that the party is on track to meet its objectives. The committee aims ambitiously to nominate parliamentary candidates in all 276 constituencies.

Preceding the elections, an eight-member Independent Committee has been formed as the highest national decision-making body within the CPP.

It oversees the streamlining of all internal processes leading to the congress for electing a flagbearer.

Additionally, a sub-national reorganization committee has been established to support the Independent Committee by auditing the national delegates’ list, which will serve as the official document for the congress.

The country has been zoned into three regions for grassroots engagement.

Ambing attributed the delay in holding the congress to research initiatives conducted by the party. He also highlighted the committee’s efforts to reconcile with former members who left due to internal disputes.

He said, ”it is part of our mandate to engage with all party members sitting on the fence to come back to the party. Nana Yaa Jantua Akyempim did not resign from the party but resigned from her position as the General Secretary of the party, but we will engage her again.”

“She is not the only person we will engage. We will also approach Emmanuel Bright Akwetey, Samia Yaba Nkrumah, Nii Armah Akonfrah and others will all be brought onboard so the NDC and the NPP should wait to see what will happen,” he warned.

He cautioned other former members, such as Emmanuel Bright Akwetey and Samia Yaba Nkrumah, that the CPP is committed to their reinstatement, signaling a readiness to contest the elections effectively against the NDC and NPP.

  • NDC observes Republic Day with elderly residents in Ashaiman ahead of election 2024

NDC observes Republic Day with elderly residents in Ashaiman ahead of election 2024

The Gender, Children, and Social Protection Committee of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) is intensifying its efforts to reach vulnerable communities ahead of the party’s 2024 manifesto launch.

Recently, the committee organized a successful event in Ashaiman, celebrating over 300 elderly individuals.

This stakeholder engagement, conducted in partnership with Ashaiman’s Member of Parliament, Ernest Norgbey, and the party’s constituency executives, continues the NDC’s tradition of honoring senior citizens every Republic Day on July 1.

This longstanding practice, initiated under the NDC, aims to acknowledge the significant contributions of Ghana’s elderly population to national development.

Until 2019, Republic Day served both as a national holiday and Elderly Day, commemorating Ghana’s transition to a republic and celebrating its senior citizens.

Nana Oye Bampoe Addo, Chairperson of the NDC’s Gender, Children, and Social Protection Committee, clarified the choice to host the event on June 30 rather than July 1.

She pointed out that due to July 1 no longer being recognized as a holiday, scheduling the celebration on the preceding weekend allowed more people to participate without work obligations.

“The NDC, as a social democratic party, honors and cherishes the aged, especially in a year when they have suffered haircuts. John Dramani Mahama tasked my committee, alongside Ernest Norgbey, to organise this interaction with the elderly in Ashaiman. We want to hear their issues, challenges, and recommendations on governance,” said Nana Oye.

MP Ernest Norgbey emphasized that Ashaiman’s robust backing of the NDC made it an ideal location for the event.

“We want to let the elderly know they are not forgotten. Our manifesto includes stringent policies that will benefit them if John Mahama comes to power,” he stated.

The MP, accompanied by members of the Gender, Children, and Social Protection Committee, toured various areas of Ashaiman to visit veteran NDC members and other senior citizens who were unable to attend the event. They presented gifts and engaged in conversations with them.

The elderly attendees expressed their appreciation, praising the NDC for its sincere concern for senior citizens.

They urged party leaders to stay connected with grassroots supporters and to support MP Norgbey in securing votes.

Many seniors lauded Mr. Norgbey’s commitment to the constituency, despite challenges posed by the NPP government.

This event, held on Sunday at the Celestial School Complex in Ashaiman Official Town, continues a series of similar engagements. Previous events have included visits to persons with disabilities in Essikado-Ketan and Shama in the Western Region, as well as Cape Coast in the Central Region.

The event featured food, music, and an opportunity for seniors to share their ideas for a potential Mahama administration following the December 2024 elections.

Attendees received baskets filled with rice, cooking oil, clothing, sweets, beverages, and other essentials.

I will represent CPP in 2024 elections -Nana Sarpong Kumankuma

The Convention Peoples Party (CPP) has refuted claims that it will abstain from fielding a presidential candidate in the upcoming December 7, 2024 elections.

Nana Akosua Sarpong Kumankuma, Chairperson of the CPP, affirmed the party’s readiness to participate in the forthcoming polls. In an interview with 3news.com, she expressed confidence in the electoral process.

Currently, two prominent members of the party, former flagbearer Ivor Kobina Greenstreet and the incumbent party chairman Nana Akosua Sarpong Kumankuma, have officially submitted their candidacies for the presidential slot.

Addressing social media speculations about the party’s electoral strategy, Nana Sarpong Kumankuma attributed these rumors to internal frustrations stemming from delays in internal procedures.

She said, “Am definitely coming as a Presidential Candidate so do not want to engage too much on internal issues.”

She further indicated that, “myself and him (Ivor Greenstreet) were the only contestants who supposedly filed. We will see.”

The CPP, a Nkrumahist party, has faced internal challenges but remains committed to enhancing its appeal to voters and expanding its support base.

  • Why this huge increment? – PNC flagbearer aspirants ‘cry’ over 100k filing fee

Why this huge increment? – PNC flagbearer aspirants ‘cry’ over 100k filing fee

Some members of the Peoples National Convention (PNC) vying for the party’s flagbearer position have strongly opposed the newly imposed filing fee of one hundred thousand cedis.

Former General Secretary Bernard Mornah and Sampson Asaki Awingobit are perplexed by the decision to drastically increase the fees, which they argue could deter potential candidates from participating in the party’s internal elections.

The PNC’s National Executive Council (NEC) recently convened to open nominations for various party positions, marking its first meeting since the party’s former General Secretary split to revive the People’s National Party (PNP).

During this session, the NEC set the filing fee for the flagbearer position at GHC 100,000. This fee represents a 100% increase from the previous GHC50,000 fee.

Similarly, potential parliamentary candidates must pay GHC10,000 for nomination forms, also doubled from previous amounts.

The announcement of these increased fees has sparked controversy within the party, with several members expressing concern that such steep fees could restrict participation in internal party processes.

Bernard Mornah, in particular, voiced his dismay over the decision, arguing that the PNC, which faces financial constraints, should not deter potential contenders by setting exorbitant filing fees.

He asked, “over the years, it is not filing fees that have been used to finance the activities of the party so why this huge increment?”

He further indicated that, “If left with me alone, I can afford GH¢110k, but the situation is that we are seeking to make the party attractive and we expected that things will be right for everybody who could contest without money becoming a barrier.”

Sampson Asaki Awingobit, another member of the party, has also raised objections to the National Executive Council’s decision to increase the filing fees.

According to him, the decision by the NEC to raise the filing fee was inappropriate.

The People’s National Convention aims to establish itself as a viable third political force in the country’s political landscape, but significant efforts are still required to achieve this goal.

“This is criminally minded!” – Kwame Agbodza slams EC’s ban on party agents observing vote transfers

The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana has issued a new directive barring political party agents from observing the transfer of votes at district offices.

This directive, effective from June 3, 2024, was communicated to regional and district directors in response to violent clashes reported during previous vote transfer exercises.

In the memo, the EC stated, “The Commission’s attention has been drawn to the violent clashes occurring at some district offices as a result of the transfer of votes exercise. Regional directors are to inform district officers not to allow agents of political parties to observe the transfer of votes exercise with effect from tomorrow, Monday, the 3rd of June 2024. Pursuant to Regulation 22(8) of CI 127, Returning Officers are required to give copies of the transferred voters list to the political parties and candidates upon request.”

The EC’s decision aims to prevent further disturbances and ensure a smooth transfer process. However, the Commission emphasized its commitment to transparency by ensuring that political parties and candidates can still request copies of the transferred voter lists.

The directive has sparked significant backlash from political figures. Minority Chief Whip and Member of Parliament for Adaklu Constituency, Kwame Governs Agbodza, criticised the decision on social media, calling it “criminally minded.” He argued that agents must be allowed to fully observe the process to ensure fairness and accountability.

In his post on X, Agbodza wrote, “This is criminally minded. AGENTS MUST OBSERVE FULLY.”

The new directive and subsequent reactions highlight the ongoing tensions and challenges in maintaining electoral integrity and security in Ghana. The EC’s measures are intended to balance the need for order and security at district offices while upholding the transparency of the electoral process.

For further context, this directive follows the EC’s broader efforts to manage the electoral process, including voter registration and the upcoming 2024 general elections. The EC has also faced scrutiny for its handling of voter registration exercises and the provision of voting facilities.

“We have implemented measures to ensure peaceful elections” – Police

The Ghana Police Service (GPS) has implemented stringent measures to ensure a secure environment for the upcoming general elections.

These measures include the establishment of an election security secretariat tasked with overseeing, planning, and executing all election-related matters. Collaborating with other security agencies, the GPS aims to conduct the elections smoothly and without any security breaches.

Commissioner of Police (COP) Iddi Lansah Seidu, the Director General of ICT at the Police Headquarters, revealed these measures during the passing-out ceremony of 29 graduates and 159 general recruits at the Regional Police Training School in Ho last Wednesday.

Addressing the new police personnel, Seidu emphasized the significance of their role in an election year, urging them to enforce election laws impartially while respecting the rights of citizens.

“You are to treat them with respect, exhibit a high sense of professionalism, and live law-abiding lives for others to emulate. Always remember that policing is about service, sacrifice, and selflessness,” he advised the new officers.

Acknowledging the evolving landscape of security, Seidu highlighted the changing nature of crimes, particularly complex and cyber-related offenses.

He emphasized the demand for diverse, complex, skilled, and specialized services to address contemporary crime trends. To meet these challenges, a new training module incorporating theory, field practicals, and simulation exercises has been introduced, focusing on activities such as riding, driving, swimming, crowd control, and incident and disaster management.

Seidu mentioned that nearly 7,000 new police personnel have benefited from this updated training approach.

He urged the fresh officers to uphold high standards in maintaining law, order, and security in the country. The ceremony recognized Graduate G/Sgt Michael Peprah Yeboah as the under-cadet and General Recruit Godfred Kabatia as the best recruit.

Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia, also the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has set the stage for the 2024 elections, declaring it as a decisive battle between himself and former President John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer for the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Speaking at the UPSA auditorium on Wednesday, February 7, 2024, Bawumia framed the upcoming contest as a choice between the future and the past, emphasizing that the outcome would shape the trajectory of the nation.

Bawumia highlighted fundamental questions that Ghanaians would need to consider in making their choice, asserting that entrusting the presidency to him would usher in a new era of innovative and impactful ideas aimed at transforming the country. He underscored his vision for the nation, focusing on key policy areas that he believes will bring about positive change and development.

“The choice Ghanaians face in 2024 is between Vice President Bawumia and former President Mahama. It is fundamentally a choice between the future and the past.

“We have to ask ourselves a number of questions in making that choice: If you want someone you can you trust to come up with innovative and impactful ideas to transform Ghana, then it is Dr Bawumia,” he stated, positioning himself as the candidate for progress and innovation.

He further emphasized qualities such as personal integrity, trustworthiness in fighting corruption, and a proven record in job creation for the youth as attributes that set him apart from his opponent. Bawumia also highlighted his commitment to addressing the needs of the poor, disabled, and vulnerable segments of society, positioning himself as a leader who prioritizes inclusivity and social welfare.

Additionally, Bawumia articulated his vision for preparing Ghana for the Fourth Industrial Revolution, positioning himself as the candidate with the foresight and commitment to navigate the challenges and opportunities presented by technological advancement.

“If it is someone with personal integrity who is not corrupt, and can be trusted to fight corruption, then your choice, clearly, is Dr. Bawumia. And, if the person you have in mind is someone you can trust to work hard and tirelessly and selflessly for Ghana, it is Dr. Bawumia.

“If you want a leader who has a proven record, and who you can trust to create jobs for the youth, it is Dr. Bawumia. A man to trust to take care of the poor, disabled and vulnerable, It is Dr. Bawumia.

“If you are looking for the man who has the vision and commitment to prepare Ghana for the Fourth Industrial revolution, it is Dr. Bawumia,” he added.

  • You can’t wait for an election year to introduce major Electoral Reforms – NDC to EC

You can’t wait for an election year to introduce major Electoral Reforms – NDC to EC

The National Democratic Congress’ Director of Elections, Dr. Omane Boamah, has asserted that the Electoral Commission (EC) cannot conduct the upcoming year’s election in November due to a delayed proposal.

Dr. Boamah emphasizes that major electoral reforms should not be introduced in an election year, especially after a problematic District Level (Assembly) Elections marked by numerous postponements, ballot paper shortages, and complicity among election officers.

On Monday, January 29, the NDC supported changing the national election day but proposed initiating the reform in 2028. This decision followed an Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting discussing the EC’s proposal.

Dr. Boamah, in a Facebook post, criticized the EC for waiting seven years after 2016 to revisit the election date issue, only to bring it up when there are just ten clear months until the December 07 presidential and parliamentary elections in Ghana.

“You don’t wait for an election year to introduce major Electoral Reforms: a year in which the EC has so much to do after an abysmal District Level (Assembly) Elections characterised by postponements after postponements, shortage of ballot papers, some Election officers complicity among others,” he added.

He questioned why the EC did not address these matters in the years following 2016 or after the 2020 elections, emphasizing the impracticality of introducing major electoral reforms in an election year when the EC is already burdened.

“Meanwhile, the Electoral Commission’s calendar of programmes and activities for the upcoming elections is not yet ready; hence, could not be released to political parties,” he added.

Dr Boamah queried why the EC waited for January to end without stakeholders having the electoral calendar for the 2024 elections.

“Why did the EC not introduce these discussions, adjustments, and amendments in 2017, 2018, 2019, or better still, why not after the 2020 elections? As in, introducing the subject matter in 2021, 2022, and 2023?”

“This amendment of a non-entrenched clause requires two-thirds of MPs to pass, meanwhile the MPs themselves must be in their constituencies for some parts of this year campaigning, facilitating the registration of voters when the EC finally decides. Not to think of the duration of the process and other germane issues the EC must
bring to the front burner,” he added.

Moreover, Dr. Boamah points out that the EC has not released the calendar of programs and activities for the upcoming elections, making it challenging for political parties to prepare.

He urged the EC to amend Article 112 (4) of the 1992 constitution, highlighting the logistical challenges involved in the process, especially with MPs needing to be in their constituencies for campaigning and voter registration.

In summary, Dr. Omane Boamah criticizes the EC’s timing and approach to electoral reforms, advocating for a more strategic and timely implementation to ensure a smooth electoral process.

It will cost NPP to come back to power should it lose 2024 elections – Kusi Boafo

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Public Sector Reforms, Thomas Kusi Boafo, has highlighted the formidable task the New Patriotic Party (NPP) would encounter in making a comeback if they were to lose power to the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

During an interview on the Wontumi TV/Radio Morning Show with Oheneba Nana Asiedu, Mr. Kusi Boafo highlighted the NDC’s history of causing destruction and undermining successful projects.

He specifically mentioned infrastructural endeavors like the Suame interchange and the Boankra inland port, as well as policies such as the Free SHS, asserting that the NDC lacks a track record of implementing transformative policies.

“The policies and programs implemented by this government, if not safeguarded by winning the 2024 elections, the financial implications to repair damages caused by the NDC and secure victory in the next elections would surpass the costs of winning the election itself,” he stated.

Mr. Kusi Boafo pointed out the NDC’s tendency for visionless governance and leaving damages in their wake after their term in office. He criticized their practice of showcasing NPP’s infrastructure projects in numerous volumes of the ‘Green Book’ during their tenure.

Additionally, he praised Chairman Wontumi for his individual qualities and significant contributions to the party as a Regional Chairman.

Mr. Kusi Boafo expressed confidence that Chairman Wontumi’s name would be forever etched in the party’s history due to his consummate leadership, passion, and lifelong dedication to his chairmanship role. He advised caution, urging Chairman Wontumi to be wary of those around him, as they could potentially contribute to his downfall.

  • Election day should be holiday so people can vote – EC proposes

Election day should be holiday so people can vote – EC proposes

The Electoral Commission (EC) has tabled a proposal, advocating for the designation of election days as national holidays.

The recommendation was presented during the Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting held on Monday, January 22, 2024.

The EC emphasized at the meeting that such a move could significantly contribute to cultivating a more robust democratic culture in the country.

Advocates of the proposal argue that designating election days as national holidays would provide citizens with ample time and opportunity to participate actively in the electoral process.

This increased civic engagement, they believe, could lead to a more informed and participatory electorate.

In addition to this, the EC is also proposing that the December 7 election date should be reviewed to November 7. The EC clarified that the proposal, initially brought forward by political parties, aims to provide ample time for the commission to effectively manage its operations, particularly in the event of a run-off.

However, in a reaction the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has kicked against changing the December 7 election date.

Stop promising politicians your votes, ensure lives are protected – Rev. Dr. Opuni Frimpong tells Chiefs

Executive Director of the Alliance for Christian Advocacy Africa, Rev. Dr. Opuni Frimpong has called on traditional leaders to assume a distinct role in the upcoming 2024 elections.

In an interview with Adom FM, he stated that chiefs should refrain from promising politicians their votes and, instead, concentrate on ensuring that no lives are harmed during elections.

He added that it’s more important for traditional leaders to keep people safe during elections.

He indicated that chiefs should leverage their influence to ensure that elections transpire peacefully and without violence.

“Many traditional leaders are making promises to support politicians during their campaigns, even though many of their followers have lost their lives in past elections. It is crucial for traditional leaders to advise politicians against causing harm to their people during elections. Simply pleasing politicians is ineffective, especially when many of them fail to fulfill their promises,”he added.

He advocated for chiefs to leverage their influence to ensure peaceful and non-violent electoral processes.

According to him, it is crucial for traditional leaders to counsel politicians against causing harm to their constituents during electoral activities.

Dr. Frimpong emphasizes that merely pleasing politicians proves ineffective, particularly when many of them fail to fulfill their promises.

A female running mate cannot thrive in Ghana – Allotey Jacobs

Former Central Region Chairman of the National Democratic Congress, Bernard Allotey Jacobs, has expressed reservations about the prospect of having a female running mate, contending that Ghana is not currently prepared for such a development.

While acknowledging the pivotal role a suitable running mate plays in the success of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), he argued that the prevailing attitudes towards women in Ghanaian politics have not evolved since Kwame Nkrumah’s era.

Speaking on Peace FM Mr Allotey Jacobs highlighted the challenges faced by women in the rough terrain of politics and cited the limited representation of women in Parliament as indicative of societal perceptions.

“I don’t think Ghana is ripe for a woman as a Running Mate. Ghana is not ripe for it. We haven’t changed our attitude from Kwame Nkrumah’s time till date. We are still the same. Ghana is not ripe for a woman as a running mate. We haven’t changed at all; it’s the same  attitude”.

He explained that “when a woman enters politics, they (Ghanaians) look at the woman from a different angle altogether,” exclaiming, “our politician’s terrain is very, very rough!”

“How many women MPs do you get in Parliament?” he questioned when challenged by a panel member, Kwamena Duncan, that there are some women leaders in the House of Parliament and in other areas of political influence.

Despite expressing optimism for a future where Ghana embraces women in prominent political roles, Allotey Jacobs remained skeptical about their acceptance as running mates in the present political climate.

The ongoing debate surrounding the selection of a Running Mate for Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in the upcoming December 7 presidential elections has garnered increased attention.

Certain members and supporters within the New Patriotic Party (NPP) have initiated lobbying efforts, with Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh (‘NAPO’), the Minister of Energy, emerging as a notable candidate.

NAPO is touted for possessing unique leadership qualities that some believe would enhance the NPP’s electoral prospects in the upcoming elections.

Influential party member Kennedy Agyapong, the Assin Central lawmaker, is among those who vocally endorse NAPO as the right candidate for the position.

Mahama appeals for ‘honeymoon’ period should he win election 2024

Former President John Mahama is urging Ghanaians, with a particular emphasis on trade and labor groups, to consider affording him a grace period should he successfully reclaim power.

This appeal arises in light of the heightened calls for enhanced conditions of service from these organizations.

Addressing attendees at a ‘Campus Connect’ event in Hohoe, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer stressed the importance of allowing time to revive the economy before tackling specific demands.

“And you will realize the harm that the NPP administration has done to Ghana’s economy. This country is broke, and so we will beg you that when we come into office give us a bit of a honeymoon, let’s put things in place so that we bring the economy back onto its feet.”

Mahama emphasized that his party is exercising caution in making promises for the 2024 election, considering the challenges facing the ailing economy.

“And I will plead with the teachers union, GNAT, NAGRAT, UTAG and TEWU and all of them, I know all of you are clamoring for allowances. Let me caution you that in 2025 when we take over we will show you the books and the finances of this country.”

Mr Mahama was speaking during his ‘Building Ghana’ tour of the Volta where he assured that his campaign would not engage in outrageous pledges ahead of the 2024 election.

“And when we have done that we can accede to your demands again, and that’s why I’m being very measured in the promises that I make because we all know the crises in which this country has been plunged”.

  • There would be dire consequences if Nitiwul makes any wrong move in 2024 elections – NDC

There would be dire consequences if Nitiwul makes any wrong move in 2024 elections – NDC

A National Democratic Congress (NDC) operative, James Agbey, has cautioned the Minister of Defence, Dominic Nitiwul, against any attempts to manipulate the upcoming 2024 general elections.

James Agbey asserts that the Minister of Defence, Dominic Nitiwul, would be the first to face consequences if he attempts to use security forces to intimidate voters in the upcoming 2024 elections.

According to a statement signed by James Agbey, the NDC operative expressed concern over the defence minister’s alleged threat, emphasising that such actions are contradictory to democratic norms.

He went further to interpret the purported threat as a veiled intention to employ the Armed Forces to instigate violence during the electoral process.

“The truth is, there would be dire consequences if Nitiwul and his likes make any wrong move ahead of the 2024 general elections. In fact, Nitiwul will be first to go down if he dares orchestrate election rigging and violence in the forthcoming general election.

“Some of us are ready and willing to defend our democracy. We are ready to face off with the NPP in the event that they use the armed forces to destabilise the 2024 elections,” he said in the statement.

The NDC operative called on President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, who is also the Commander in Chief of the Ghana Armed Forces, to intervene immediately and place Nitiwul on a security watch list.

He also urged the Inspector General of Police, Dr George Akuffo Dampare, to launch a comprehensive investigation into the video to ensure the integrity of the democratic process.

“I therefore, called on Commander in Chief of the Ghana Armed Forces, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, to immediately call Dominic Nitiwul to order and place him on a security watch list as threat to democracy ahead of the 2024 general elections.

“I also charged the Inspector General of Police, Dr George Akuffo Dampare, to immediately commence a comprehensive investigation into the Nitiwul Video with a view to nipping this ugly trend in the bud,” the statement added.

The NDC operative remained resolute, stating that the NDC is firm in its bid to take over power in the 2024 elections, citing the support of the majority of Ghanaians for the return of the NDC to government.

Agbey warned against any collaboration between the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and elements within the Armed Forces to disrupt the electoral process.

“Let it be on record that whether Nitiwul likes it or not, the NDC will surely take over power in 2024. For emphasis, the majority of Ghanaians are insisting on the return of the NDC to government in 2024, and there’s nothing that is going to stop the momentum that’s building in that regard. The NPP dare not connive with rogue elements in the armed forces to disrupt the 2024 polls.

“As a longstanding operative for the NDC, I can boldly speak of our experiences and know-how, and our resilience to wade off any NPP undemocratic tendencies,” the statement added.

Hawa Koomson calls for re-election; says NPP has done a lot

Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya East, Madam Mavis Hawa Koomson, is vigorously making her case for re-election, highlighting her extensive credentials and notable achievements within the constituency.

Expressing her aspirations for a fourth term in Parliament, the Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development emphasizes that she has already made a substantial impact in numerous developmental areas within her constituency and asserts her continued dedication to addressing constituents’ needs.

Addressing the media following her vetting in Cape Coast, she highlighted her investments in education, health, road infrastructure, water, and security, among other sectors, with the aim of enhancing the overall quality of life for the constituents.

“I am putting up a police regional headquarters for the Central East Police Regional Command in my constituency to enhance security,” she said.

“I’m also providing boreholes to provide potable water to areas without pipe borne water until they are finally connected.”

Considering the vast area of her constituency, it was difficult to notice the development projects she had undertaken, but they existed and she was poised to add more, Madam Koomson noted.

She indicated that with her experience, affable personality and achievements, she stood tall among her contenders.

She is being contested by Mr Bernard Ayeh Danquah and Mr Eric Kwaku Boateng.

  • Fiifi Kwetey charges NDC to work on internal decay

General Secretary for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, has called upon the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to undertake a comprehensive internal cleansing, contending that there exists significant decay within the ranks of the main opposition party.

Addressing the commemorative anniversary of the 2023 edition of the 31st December Revolution in Accra, the General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) asserted that the challenges within the NDC surpassed those of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).

“There is real decay and that decay continues to be in the NDC today. So, I don’t want us the NDC to pretend that 31st (December) is simply a day to bash NPP, (the) NPP is not the issue, the issue is bigger than NPP.

“The decay even within the NDC must stop with that blazing fire and that is what this business is about,” a charged Kwetey submitted.

He stressed that unless the NDC rids itself of the internal decay, the 2024 victory will be meaningless.

“It is in vain if we win power only to continue what we see, only to do some of the things that we are seeing and only to claim we are doing less, that is not enough,” he cautioned.

31st December in 1981 marked the second coming into office of former president Jerry John Rawlings as a military leader.

Kwetey’s comments has excited former Deputy General Secretary, Samuel Koku Anyidoho , who has proclaimed vindication over his position that the party was suffering moral decadence.

Referencing Kwetey’s submission that the NDC needed to clean its house, Anyidoho suggested that his purported sacking from the party was because of similar calls.

He challenged the current chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah and leader of the party, John Dramani Mahama; to take similar action against Kwetey because Asiedu Nketiah as the then party scribe oversaw the process that led to Anyidoho’s expulsion for anti-party conduct.

“Let the Chairman and the Leader of the NDC dare come out and sack the General Secretary if they have the “balls” to do so,” he posted on X (formerly Twitter).

Presidency dispels reports of Akufo-Addo orchestrating politically motivated changes in military leadership

The Presidency has issued a formal response to accusations alleging a deliberate attempt to orchestrate politically motivated changes within the hierarchy of the Ghana Armed Forces

The unfolding controversy has prompted a clarification from the highest office, seeking to address concerns and provide insights into the recent developments within the military leadership.

The assertion implied a purported plan to deploy the military to suppress citizens during the December 7 elections.

The publication also alleged a meeting at the Presidency on Tuesday, 2nd January 2024, to discuss these purported politically motivated changes in the military.

In reaction, a statement signed by the Presidency’s Communications Director said the President did hold a meeting with Heads of Security agencies at Jubilee House on January 2, 2024.

However, it added that the meeting is an annual feature on the President’s calendar at the beginning of the New Year, and involves the Heads of Security agencies offering their best wishes for the coming year.

“At these meetings, the Heads of Security agencies call on the President to offer him their best wishes for the coming year, with the President also using the opportunity to express his appreciation to them for their continued commitment to safeguarding the peace and stability of the nation,” the statement signed by Eugene Arhin explained.

Contrary to the allegations on social media, the Presidency said no discussions about changes to the hierarchy of the Armed Forces took place during this meeting.

“It is imperative to note that a change in the leadership of the Armed Forces is embarked upon by the President in accordance with the Constitution and well-established conventions, devoid of any political considerations. Any future change made in this regard will not be a new phenomenon that should warrant unfounded speculations.”

The Akufo-Addo-led administration pledged to maintain this reputation by ensuring the Ghana Armed Forces operate free from partisanship.

The statement further conveyed the President’s reassurance that the 2024 general elections will be free, fair, and transparent.

“In the interest of safeguarding the peace and stability of Ghana, the public is urged to disregard such unfounded speculations and publications aimed at triggering agitations within the rank and file of the Armed Forces,” the Presidency concluded.

Speaking in an interview, some Ghanaians shared their anticipations for 2024 and called for the need for the nation to prioritize a peaceful election.

“In the year 2024, we should all allow God to take dominion of everything that we are going to do and he will open more doors unto us and he’s going to give us great testimonies for his 2024. We are hoping that we’ll have a peaceful election, and peaceful transitions and that as we have come together over the years, we’ll continue to come together and we see the election to a successful end. Also, I’m hoping for personal grow and more money which is very important.”

Another person commented: “I have a purpose that I will help encourage others to know that whatever little thing we have when we manage it well, things will be better. Another thing is that the youth I have purposed that I will encourage them so they don’t lose hope in
2024, I believe, is going to be a good year. I can see prospects ahead and so my prayer for the nation and all the youth especially is that let’s rise and work harder.”

One individual admonished Ghanaians to strengthen their relationship with God and be part of those who will be saved.

“Going through the year as individuals and as a church, God has revealed himself to us in so many ways and we appreciate him for all that he’s done for us. We have some projects we are doing. We know he will lead us as individuals who would like to tighten or build a good relationship with him so that he [God] will also be with us.”

Election 2024: Mahama promises new budget targeted at supporting and building small businesses

Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has vowed to introduce a fresh budget in April 2025 should he secure the presidency.

In his New Year message to Ghanaians on Wednesday, January 3, 2024, John Dramani Mahama revealed his plan to introduce a fresh budget, emphasizing its focus on bolstering and nurturing small businesses across the country.

Additionally, he announced plans to adjust taxes by providing incentives aimed at fostering a conducive environment for businesses to thrive. This adjustment reflects Mahama’s proactive approach towards creating a tax structure that encourages growth and prosperity within the business community.

The move, John Dramani Mahama opined, would help curb the unemployment canker that keeps rearing its head up in the country.

“In April 2025, the new NDC government shall introduce a new budget to support and build small businesses and adjust taxes as incentive for job creation,” Mahama said in his speech to Ghanaians, and monitored by GhanaWeb Business.

The NDC flagbearer reiterated his vision to roll out a 24-hour economy.

“At the heart of my vision for economic revitalization is the implementation of a 24-hour economy. This innovation policy seeks to maximize productivity and efficiency by extending business hours and operations around the clock,” John Dramani Mahama stated.

The 24-hour economy, he said, would create a more vibrant economy that would benefit both workers and businesses.

Clergy entreats Electoral Commission to maintain steadfastness and resist political influences

The Electoral Commission (EC) is under mounting pressure to uphold fairness and firmness, safeguarding its integrity and preserving the credibility of the upcoming Election 2024. The call comes as stakeholders emphasize the pivotal role the EC plays in maintaining the prevailing peace of the nation.

Prominent Reverend Ministers in the Sunyani Municipality underscore the pivotal role of the nation’s electoral management body in ensuring the integrity of general elections. According to them, upholding principles of freedom, fairness, and transparency remains critical for consolidating the gains of the country’s burgeoning democracy.

Conveying their counsel during separate interviews with the Ghana News Agency (GNA), religious leaders led their congregations in Sunyani in night vigils to welcome the New Year. The men of God stressed the importance of electoral integrity as part of their guidance for the upcoming year.

They, however, commended the EC for its honesty and efficiency for successfully organising successive general elections which had helped to sustain the prevailing national peace, social and political stability.

“The destiny and future of the nation lay partly in the hands of the EC, and we expect the Commission to remain resolute and steadfast ahead of the Election 2024”, the Very Reverend Dr. Solomon Bruce, the Superintendent Minister and the Synod Secretary of the Sunyani
    Methodist Diocese stated.

He said the electorate also had an integral role to play if the 2024 general election would be incident-free and thus urged supporters of the political parties to be decorous in the electioneering and endeavour to make informed choices when they go to the ballot.

Very Rev. Dr. Bruce said Ghana required selfless and God-fearing leaders to transform and turn around the nation’s economic fortunes to facilitate accelerated national development.

He cautioned the youth not to allow themselves to be influenced by politicians who might approach and use them as tools to foment trouble in the campaigning period.

Apostle Ofori Baffour, the Founder of the Sunyani-based Unique Holy Fire of God Ministry commended Ghanaians for their respective contributions towards protecting the national peace in 2023, saying, “we have to do more to make the peace of the nation absolute in 2024”.

He called on the leadership of the political parties to ensure that their members and supporters eschewed all forms of lawlessness and violence as well as acts that could trigger political violence and social instability.

Apostle Baffour emphasised peaceful co-existence would facilitate the nation’s economic progress in 2024, and thereby make life better for all.

He said mostly children, people with disabilities and women bore the brunt of political violence and advised everybody to contribute to building and strengthening national peace and social cohesion.

Apostle Baffour described 2024 as a year of Ghana’s economic emancipation, but added, “we can’t achieve this in an atmosphere of violence and political turmoil”.

“Politicians must also learn to be faithful and godly,” Apostle Emmanuel Sakyi, the Founder and Leader of the Sunyani-based Word of Favour Ministry International advised.

They must also desist from using their political positions and portfolios to deceive the unsuspecting and innocent Ghanaians just to win their votes, instead of building a better Ghana for all.

Resolve disputes through court – Bawumia tells Political actors ahead of 2024 polls

Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has called upon all political stakeholders, urging them to prioritize the resolution of disputes through the judicial system in the upcoming general elections this year. This plea underscores the importance of a fair and legal approach to address any election-related conflicts.

Emphasizing Ghana’s distinguished position as the most peaceful country in West Africa and the second most peaceful in Africa, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia underscored the significance of preserving this esteemed reputation. In his remarks, he stressed the importance of not taking lightly the country’s standing in maintaining peace and stability in the region.

Highlighting the significance of the upcoming general elections in Ghana, Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia pointed out that 2024 is poised to be a pivotal year. Amidst the tumult observed in neighboring countries, he underscored Ghana’s distinguished status as an oasis of peace.

“I don’t think it just happened by coincidence; I believe God has His hand on Ghana, and we should continue to pray to maintain peace and stability in Ghana,” he remarked.

Speaking during the crossover service at Action Chapel International, Dr Bawumia underscored that while political actors may harbour differences, the 2024 general elections should not result in any form of instability.

“In Ghana, when we have difficulties and disagreements over elections, we go to court and we settle the matter in court.

“We will settle it that way and we will go back and leave peacefully and this is how I expect the 2024 elections to go,” the Vice President said.

The flagbearer of the ruling New Patriotic Party emphasised the need for Ghanaians to remember the country in their prayers as it gears up for the upcoming general elections.

Let the Ghanaians decide, do not rig elections – Mahama to EC

As the upcoming elections draw near, John Dramani Mahama, the Flagbearer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) for the 2024 elections, has earnestly appealed to the Electoral Commission (EC) to ensure a fair and credible general election without any form of manipulation.

Addressing an enthusiastic gathering of students at the Wiaso College of Education and Nursing Training in the Western North Region during the ‘Building Ghana Together’ tour, the former president emphasized the crucial role the Electoral Commission plays in upholding the integrity of the electoral process.

Mahama expressed, “They should do their duty to God and country. They shouldn’t cheat for anybody. I don’t want them to cheat for me and they shouldn’t rig the election for anybody. They should let the wishes of the Ghanaian people prevail,” he said.

Directing his appeal to the Electoral Commission officers, Mahama urged them to conscientiously carry out their responsibilities on Election Day, adhering strictly to the established rules and regulations.

He emphasized the need for a free and transparent electoral environment.

Reflecting on his previous experience as President of Ghana, Mahama asserted, “Electoral Commission Officers, I am appealing to your conscience and your heart, on that day 7th December when you come out, do your work as strictly and according to the rules as possible”.

“I have that experience, I have been President of Ghana before and you all know the work that I did when I was President. I know that on 7th December, 2024, Insha Allah, NDC will win the election”.

Encouraging the supporters, Mahama urged them to exercise their right to vote in large numbers, expressing his belief that the NDC’s return to power would contribute to the country regaining its economic strength.

  • Voter registration exercise: Supreme Court dismisses NDC, other parties’ injunction request against EC

Voter registration exercise: Supreme Court dismisses NDC, other parties’ injunction request against EC

The Supreme Court, on October 17, 2023, rejected an injunction application filed by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and four additional political parties against the Electoral Commission (EC).

Five political parties, including the NDC, the Convention People’s Party (CPP), All People’s Congress, Liberal Party of Ghana, and the Great Consolidated Popular Party, had collectively sued the Electoral Commission on September 7, objecting to the Commission’s decision to limit voter registration centers to district offices.

The parties argued that this decision could potentially deny many eligible voters their right to register for participation in public elections. They sought an injunction to halt the registration exercise until the main case could be heard. However, the Commission proceeded with the exercise despite the injunction.

During the hearing on October 7, 2023, neither the applicants nor their legal representatives were present in court. However, the Deputy Chairman of the Electoral Commission in charge of Corporate Services, Dr. Bossman Asare, along with their lawyer, Justin Amenuvor, attended the hearing.

Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, presiding over a 5-member panel, explained that the case could not be scheduled earlier due to the Supreme Court’s recess during August and September, as the court does not typically convene during this period.

Lead counsel for the Electoral Commission, Justin Amenuvor, informed the court that the parties had not filed any statement of case after submitting the injunction.

“The Supreme Court doesn’t sit on vacation. There are no rules for SC to sit during the month of August and September. That is why the application was fixed for 17th of October, 2023. Discussions of fixing it for today should be premised on the SC not being able to sit during vacations except by a special fiat,” she explained to the court.

“I believe that they are all satisfied with the exercise that went on. Till date there has not been any statement off case. Just a writ and application,” he added.

Consequently, the Apex court ruled to strike out the application presented by the five political parties. The five-member panel included Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Torkornoo, Justice Baffoe Bonnie, Justice Mensa Bonsu, Justice Barbara Ackah-Yensu, and Justice Ernest Gyawu.

  • Floating voters will ensure NPP’s victory come 2024 – Suame MP

Member of Parliament for Suame, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, has acknowledged that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) will require more than just its dedicated supporters to secure victory in the upcoming election.

In an interview on Oyerepa TV in Kumasi on September 27, the Majority Leader made this know when he expressed regret over the recent resignation of former trade minister Alan Kyerematen, which occurred two days prior.

He believed that Alan’s departure was premature and that had he remained, it could have potentially garnered greater support for his presidential aspirations.

“So, in my view, if Alan had exercised some more patience, time would have conspired to reposition him, that’s why I consider his resignation very unfortunate and maybe he did not think of the repercussions properly,” he submitted.

“NPP alone with all our numbers cannot cross the Red Sea, we still need floating voters, and so if someone goes and returns, like a prodigal son, he has to be accepted, so on that, I have no premonitions,” he added.

Kennedy Agyapong, the Member of Parliament for Assin Central, is set to compete for the NPP’s flagbearer position. He will be joined by three other contenders, including Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto, and Francis Addai-Nimoh.

The NPP has scheduled November 4, 2023, as the date for selecting a new leader for the party, who will succeed President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

  • Supporter of Alan Kyerematen not a member of us – NDC

Supporter of Alan Kyerematen not a member of us – NDC

The Ashanti Regional leadership of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has refuted allegations suggesting the suspension of their Women’s Organiser within the region.

These claims arose due to her public endorsement of a candidate from an opposing party, the New Patriotic Party (NPP), in the flagbearership race.

Earlier reports had indicated that the NDC’s Kumawu office had taken the decision to remove Akua Afriyie, the Women’s Organiser, from her role for openly expressing her support for Alan Kyerematen, a contestant in the New Patriotic Party’s flagbearer competition.

This decision to remove her allegedly stemmed from a video in which she vocally expressed her admiration for the opposing party’s candidate.

However, in an official statement dated August 9, 2023, the leadership of the NDC in the Ashanti Region categorically denied any knowledge of an individual fitting the description of a women’s organiser or party executive at any tier of the organization.

They characterized these reports as baseless and intended to cause harm, emphasizing that no women’s organiser affiliated with their party had made any such declaration.

Furthermore, they asserted that no suspension of this nature had been implemented by any branch of the party.

The name mentioned in the reports, Akua Afriyie, was clarified to hold no presence within their party records as a women’s organiser or party executive, whether at the branch, constituency, or regional level, as detailed in their statement.

“The said name (Akua Afriyie) which is linked to the story does not exist in any of our records as a party women’s organizer or party executive either at the branch constituency or regional level,” it continued.

    Below is the statement:

According to news reports, the Ashanti Regional leadership has dismissed Akua Afriyie from her role as the Women’s Organiser.

This action was taken due to her public endorsement of Alan Kyerematen, a contender in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer race.

The decision to remove her from her position was apparently influenced by a video in which she vocally expressed her admiration for Alan Kyerematen, the opposition candidate.

In the video, Akua Afriyie can be heard stating that although she is a member of the NDC, she would cast her vote for Alan Kyerematen if he is presented as the NPP’s candidate in the 2024 general elections. She further commented that Alan, a former Minister of Trade and Industry, possesses the vision necessary to alleviate Ghana’s existing challenges and to inspire the nation’s youth towards greatness.

Reportedly, she remarked, “I am currently not a member of the NDC or a member of the NPP, but I am a strong supporter of Mr. Kyerematen.”

  • Here are Alan Kyerematen’s ’10 points’ to transform NPP

Here are Alan Kyerematen’s ’10 points’ to transform NPP

A hopeful candidate for the flagbearer position in the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Alan Kyerematen, has reportedly unveiled an ambitious plan to overhaul the party by the year 2030.

According to reports, the plan, titled “Transformation and Modernization of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) – Agenda 2030,” comprises ten key pillars.

The plan, introduced on Friday, August 11, 2023, aims to invigorate the NPP, making it a more dynamic, efficient, and all-encompassing political entity.

Central to the plan is an emphasis on expanding the NPP’s membership and bolstering the party’s financial stability through the establishment of party-run businesses.

Furthermore, the plan seeks to provide comprehensive support for grassroots party executives, including the provision of salaries and insurance coverage for their roles.

Another critical focus of the plan is the enhancement of the party’s administrative infrastructure, ensuring its strength and efficacy.

Alan Kyerematen’s strategic vision for the NPP outlines a comprehensive roadmap for transformation and modernization, potentially paving the way for a revitalized and influential political organization.

Below are the 10 pillars of Alan’s plan to transform the NPP below:

    1. Aggressively expanding the membership base of the Party, focusing particularly on the Youth and Women, and introducing a Membership Reward Scheme to incentivize Party members.

    2. Enhancing the financial strength of the Party by establishing commercially viable medium and large-scale Party-owned business enterprises, and other investment activities.

    3. Promoting the welfare of Party Executives and other officials of the Party at all levels of the Party structure, including but not limited to the payment of salaries/allowances, and the establishment of a Pension Scheme for Party officials.

    4. Strengthening the management, organizational and operational efficiency of the Party’s Field Executives and Administrative staff.

    5. Building the Policy research and analytical capacity of the Party.
    6. Integrating more fully the Party’s External Branches into the activities of the Party, as well as identifying talents to fill executive positions in government.

    7. Strengthening Government-Party relations and interactions by institutionalizing regular consultations on matters related to government and party administration.

    8. Reviewing the Party’s Constitution and other legal instruments to respond to and reflect current political dynamics.

Not everyone is in politics for personal benefits – Agyepong

A flagbearer aspirant of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, has expressed concern over the perception among some young Ghanaians that politics is a path to wealth.

He emphasized the need to instill hope, values, and virtues in the younger generation to counter the prevailing sense of despondency and desperation.

“We need to bequeath to the younger generation some level of hope and the virtues and the values that anchored this country,” he said.

“That’s why I said my political doctrine has been anchored on what I call SSS – service, sacrifice and selflessness – and I do believe that all politicians [and] leaders should have these character traits and virtues.”

In an exclusive interview, Agyepong highlighted his political doctrine based on service, sacrifice, and selflessness, which he believes all politicians and leaders should uphold.

“What is happening now, if we are not careful, the space will be populated by misfits, those who shout loudest and those who insult most, who have most venom in their voices.

“That’s not what we need in our politics. We need to inspire the younger generation to aspire to be politicians by the way we discourse, by the way we respect ourselves, by the temperate language that we should use.”

He warned against the rise of “misfits” in politics due to the misconception, urging for a change in discourse and respectful language to inspire the younger generation to become politicians for the right reasons.

Agyepong called upon the political elite to take responsibility for changing the narrative that politics is primarily a means to make money.

“When I talk about the new dawn, new direction and a new dimension what I mean is a reorientation of our values as a country.

“The narrative that has gained currency which is that you go into politics to make money, that narrative should disappear and the only people who can make it disappear is we the politicians.”

He emphasized the importance of reorienting the values of the country and promoting a new dawn and direction for politics.

As one of the ten flagbearer aspirants for the NPP, Agyepong is set to embark on a second-round nationwide campaign ahead of the special congress on August 26, 2023.

NPP Primaries: Akufo-Addo reveals his ‘preference’ for 2024 candidate

President Akufo-Addo has affirmed his dedication to supporting any potential flagbearer candidate within the New Patriotic Party (NPP) who can successfully unify the party and achieve triumph in the forthcoming presidential elections next year.

In a tweet shared on Wednesday, August 2, the president revealed that he shares the same privilege as all polling station executives across the country, allowing him to cast a single vote for an aspirant. This declaration transpired during his interaction with NPP communicators at the Jubilee House.

President Akufo-Addo noted that he will cast his vote for an aspirant who he believes can “inflict a third successive defeat on the perennial NDC Presidential Candidate, John Dramani Mahama.”

Furthermore, he highlighted the historical precedent of the ruling NPP, emphasizing that the party’s tradition has consistently rejected the notion of a president imposing a candidate. He underlined that the NPP has always steered clear of cultivating a cult of personality.

“The history of the NPP tells us that no President can foist a candidate on the party against its wishes. The NPP is not that kind of party. We have never subscribed to a cult of personality,” he said on Wednesday, August 2, when he met NPP communicators who called on him at Jubilee House.

“Indeed, our highly-respected former President, the first NPP President, John Agyekum Kufuor, in the aftermath of my election as NPP Presidential Candidate, by the 2007 National Congress, told the Congress that ‘the party has its spirit’, a spirit that cannot be ignored.”

The president’s announcement over the NPP’s superdelegates conference and upcoming primaries did not sit well with some Ghanaians.

On social media, they criticized the president for failing to have his complete focus on the running of the economy. They noted that it is unpardonable for the president to have his attention on political propaganda as the country is yet to fully recover.

Ghana’s inflation is currently above 40 per cent and the country’s cedi depreciation is gradually stabilizing.

Member of Parliament for Atwima Kwanwoma, Kofi Amankwa-Manu, has declared Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia the best candidate to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and subsequently become the President after the 2024 general elections.

During an interview with Kwesi Parker-Wilson on Oyerepa Breakfast Time, the lawmaker emphasized that he firmly believes Dr. Bawumia is the best candidate to lead the country.

“I have a good relationship with all ten aspirants. I eat with them, and some of them are even related to me through my grandfather’s side in Asokore Mampong,” stated the MP.

However, he believes that the current state of the country requires a leader like Dr. Bawumia who can bring about positive change. “When Dr. Bawumia is elected as flagbearer, things will be easier for us,” he added.

The MP, who doubles as deputy defence minister, emphasized the need for a leader with a clear vision and highlighted Dr. Bawumia as the sole vice president within the 4th Republic who has demonstrated unwavering commitment and proactivity.

Renowned economist Kwame Pianim foresees tough road ahead for Ghana’s NPP in 2024 elections

Ghanaian Economist Kwame Pianim is anticipating major obstacles for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in 2024 election campaign, attributing them to present economic challenges.

In an interview on Eyewitness News, Pianim stressed the daunting task ahead for the NPP in securing victory amidst anticipated severe economic hardships for Ghanaians.

Pianim expressed doubts about the NPP’s ability to convince voters and break the eight-year cycle of governance, advising the government to approach its actions with caution and deliberation.

“No, it’s going to be difficult in 2024. And this is why I applaud the young people who are brave enough and prepared to take on this challenge and sacrifice for the nation,” Citinewsroom.com quoted him.

Recognizing the need for a transformative approach, Pianim highlighted the necessity of avoiding the repetition of ineffective processes.

He stated, “Madness will be defined as repeating the same processes and expecting to get the same results. If we don’t change drastically how we develop and make haste slowly, we have to cut our coats according to our clothes.”

Furthermore, the economist suggested the elimination of procurement agencies and value-for-money audits, arguing that such institutions provide opportunities for corruption.

Pianim emphasized the importance of obtaining value for money in government expenditure and stated, “We have to make sure the monies we get, we will get value for money. And all the procurement agencies, value for money audit, we scrap all of them. Because they provide avenues for people to just take money, and we need to get rid of incompetence and corruption.”

Bawumia is highly competent and capable – Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu

The Vice President, Dr. Mahaudu Bawumia, has received nominations to serve as the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer, and Majority Leader in Parliament Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu has endorsed him as the most qualified candidate.

The Suame MP believes Bawumia is head and shoulders above his rivals because of his leadership skills and experience.

He acknowledged that all of the other competitors were capable, but he asserted that Bawumia is more capable than they are.

Osei-Kyei-Mensah, in a July 10 interview with the media, said:

“In the field of competent people, you’ll still have one person emerge as super competent. I’m looking at the experience of Dr Bawumia. I’m looking at his loyalty to the party. I’m looking at his focus. I’m looking at his vision. I’m looking at his temperament. I’m looking at his humility amongst the group.

“He stands out not just tall but very very tall. That is why I have tied my cloth to his and is supporting him.”

The Majority Leader said, “I believe it is Dr. Bawumia’s season to take over, just as other people, including the current President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, had their seasons to take over.”

“In 2008, when former President Kufour was exiting, there were a lot of stories like now being told that the system was supporting Alan Kyeremanten but did it go well for him, it didn’t because it was Akufo-Addo’s season.”

“There is a season for every politician and you seize it. That is what it is. If you ask me, I think the tide has swung hugely in Dr. Bawumia’s favour,” he added.

As NPP prepares to choose its flagbearer for the 2024 elections on November 4, tensions are rising.

Through the General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, the Committee delivered its findings to the National Council on Monday, July 10.
