Five individuals have perished while crossing across the English Channel

French media reports that 5 people died crossing the English Channel after the UK approved a bill to deport migrants.

The Voix du Nord newspaper reported that the bodies were found on the Wimereaux beach in northern France on Tuesday. The rescue mission is still happening. They are using helicopters and boats, as reported by the local newspaper.

About 100 people who were trying to move to a new country have been saved and put on a French navy boat. The newspaper said they will be brought to the port of Boulogne.

This happened just a few hours after British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s latest plan to send some migrants to Rwanda was approved by Parliament. The UK government wants to send back people who come into the country illegally. They hope this will stop other people from trying to come to Britain in dangerous boats to ask for asylum.

Human rights groups say the law is very mean and unkind. The United Nations and the Council of Europe asked the UK to reconsider its plans because they are worried it could hurt efforts to work together to help migrants around the world.

People trying to cross the busy English Channel face many dangers like drowning and their boats sinking. The boats are usually crowded and it can be really dangerous.

Around 30,000 people crossed in 2023, according to the UK government.

  • Charity condemns Braverman’s remarks about migrant “invasion”

Suella Braverman claimed earlier today that migrants crossing the Channel were “invading” England.

According to the home secretary, approximately 40,000 people will arrive on England’s south coast in 2022, more than doubling the number of arrivals via the English Channel in 2021.

“Let’s be clear about what’s going on here: the British people deserve to know which party is serious about stopping the invasion on our southern coast and which party isn’t,” she said.

“Some 40,000 people have arrived on the south coast this year alone. Many of them are facilitated by criminal gangs, some of them actual members of criminal gangs.

“So let’s stop pretending that they are all refugees in distress. The whole country knows that is not true. It’s only the honourable members opposite who pretend otherwise.

“We need to be straight with the public. The system is broken. Illegal migration is out of control and too many people are interested in playing political parlour games, covering up the truth than solving the problem.”

Now, the Joint Council for the Welfare of Immigrants has condemned Ms Braverman’s comments.

They said the minister’s “dehumanising language” and decision-making were “putting lives at risk”.
