Esther Smith’s team reacts to claims of unpaid record label services

In a recent interview with blogger Zionfelix, Queenlet addressed a contractual disagreement involving veteran gospel artist Esther Smith and Debrich Consultancy.

Queenlet stated that the issue arose when Esther was accused of violating a 2020 contract with Jeremy from Debrich Consultancy, whom she had recommended for social media services.

She also revealed her long-standing friendship with Esther, having known her for eight years, and mentioned that she encouraged Esther’s return to the music scene.

According to Esther Smith’s team, after the contract was signed, Jeremy, who is Queenlet’s husband, allegedly leveraged the agreement and Esther’s brand to promote Queenlet’s own work.

They further claimed that he redirected Esther’s official website (esthersmith.org) to various other domains, providing video evidence to back their claims.

When approached about the situation, Jeremy reportedly asserted that he had legal ownership of the website and copyright over Esther’s music, which led to Ankobeahene Records, Esther’s original producer, becoming involved. This situation ultimately resulted in the termination of the contract in March 2021.

To resolve the matter, Ankobeahene and Esther’s management proposed a settlement to Jeremy, contingent on him returning the website and not using Esther’s brand for profit. However, Esther’s team alleged that these terms were not fulfilled, claiming the website is currently being offered for sale online at a significant price.

Additionally, they accused Jeremy of using a platform called “Music Diffusion” to distribute Esther’s music without her permission, stating that she has not received any earnings from these distributions.

Further allegations regarding Jeremy’s conduct have emerged. Sources indicate that his alleged practices of exploiting the work and brands of others are well-known in the creative arts community, affecting several notable Ghanaian and other African musicians.

Reports also suggest he is wanted in Cameroon for allegedly defrauding over 20 gospel musicians.

Esther’s management has cautioned musicians and the public to be wary of individuals presenting themselves as investors or consultants to avoid potential exploitation.

My mother almost aborted me- Esther Smith reveals

Ghanaian gospel artist Esther Smith recently opened up about a deeply personal and emotional chapter of her life during an interview with Nana Romeo on Accra FM on August 29, 2024.

She revealed that her life nearly ended before it began, as her mother, then a young schoolgirl, had initially planned to terminate her pregnancy.

This difficult decision was influenced by the challenging circumstances surrounding Esther’s conception.

Esther recounted how her grandmother grew suspicious of her mother’s behavior on the day she intended to visit Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) for the abortion.

“My mother wanted to abort me,” she said. “On the day, she was going to KATH for the abortion. Her mother suspected something and asked where she was headed and started following her around.”

Following her instincts, the grandmother trailed her daughter and confronted her about her plans. Faced with the truth, Esther’s mother admitted her intentions.

Despite initially not wanting the child, Esther’s father stepped in when he learned of the planned abortion, putting a stop to it.

“Even my father who didn’t even want me, when he realised that my mother wanted to abort me, he stopped her.

“She had taken a lot of drugs to help with the abortion but none of them worked,” she added.

Esther also shared that her mother had resorted to various methods in an attempt to end the pregnancy, but none were successful.

During this time of uncertainty, a pastor prophesied that the unborn child would go on to make a significant impact on the country.

Reflecting on her journey, Esther recognized the divine intervention that ultimately saved her life, allowing her to rise as a celebrated figure in Ghanaian gospel music.

She also reminisced about her early experiences in music, revealing that the first song she ever wrote was titled “Ewurade Wo Din No Hyeren” (LORD, Your Name is Glorious).

At the age of 14, she joined the Methodist Church Choir in Kumasi and later, at 16, became part of the Voices of Faith choir at House of Faith Ministries.

It was during this time that she began to write her own songs, marking the start of her successful career in gospel music.

  • Embrace the title of Ghana’s greatest gospel musician – OB tells Esther Smith

Embrace the title of Ghana’s greatest gospel musician – OB tells Esther Smith

Ace broadcaster Osei Bonsu, known as OB, has praised gospel legend Esther Smith as the greatest gospel musician in Ghana’s history.

Speaking on his ‘Ekosiisen’ show on Asempa FM, OB highlighted Smith’s impressive career, noting her nine successful albums over twenty-four years as evidence of her exceptional contributions to gospel music.

OB acknowledged the talents of other renowned gospel artists but firmly believes Smith’s achievements set her apart, warranting recognition as the finest in the genre.

He emphasized her sustained prominence and the impactful nature of her music, stating,”It’s an honour you have to wear because you’ve worked for it. You have nine albums, and almost every song on the albums was a hit, so you deserve the honour, and you have to wear it with pride.

“To be at the top of the industry for over twenty-four years means that you’ve done incredible work and deserve the accolades. You can hold yourself up against any gospel musician in the past and present. There are great musicians, but you’ve been outstanding,” he said.

In response, Esther Smith remained modest, choosing not to engage in the debate over the title.

“This is not the first time someone has told me that, but I don’t really like the comparisons because it can get unhealthy at times. I prefer to keep my silence and allow the songs to perform the magic in people. I’m not a huge fan of the title,” she said.

She expressed that her primary goal is to inspire and lead people to God through her music, rather than focusing on accolades. Smith also acknowledged the contributions of earlier musicians who paved the way for her.

“This isn’t the first time someone has called me the greatest, but I prefer not to engage in such comparisons. I’d rather let my music speak for itself,” she remarked.

The conversation comes as Esther Smith prepares for her Live Concert in Accra, scheduled for August 30, 2024, at the Perez Dome.

The event will feature a lineup of esteemed gospel artists celebrating her legacy and the impact of her work on her audience.

Gospel artist Noble Nketsiah has disclosed the significant impact his fellow musician, Esther Smith, had on his career.

Noble Nketsiah shared that following his Senior High School graduation, he started selling secondhand clothing to help his mother care for his younger siblings still in school.

He explained that, despite his academic success, his passion for singing drove him to diligently chase his dreams, even though his mother hoped he would pursue a different career.

“When I completed secondary school, I had a bad relationship with my mother because she wanted me to further my education and become a doctor. I was very intelligent, so she didn’t understand why I didn’t want to go back to school. Also, my songs reminded her of the issues she had with my dad, so she was trying to stop me from singing.”

“I used to sell secondhand clothes. I had siblings who were also in school, and if my mother sacrificed to take care of me, the least I could do was sell to support her in taking care of the family,” he said.

He added that while getting ready to start the day’s work, Esther Smith, who lived nearby, was captivated by his voice and suggested they head to the studio to record some tracks.

Unexpectedly, one of the songs he recorded caught someone’s attention, leading to his significant career breakthrough.

“I lived in the same estate as Esther Smith and Morris Babyface. One morning, as I was preparing to go and sell my secondhand clothes, Esther Smith passed by and heard me singing. She was amazed by my voice and asked me to follow her to the studio. We recorded a few songs. Not knowing it, the songs we recorded were liked by someone, who paid me a huge sum of money, and that’s how my career started,” he told Emelia Brobbey on the Okukuseku Show.

Noble Nketsiah revealed that the earnings from his debut song were approximately GHC2500.00, a substantial amount at that time.

This matter surfaced during a conversation on United Showbiz, and Mr. Logic openly expressed his disappointment.

“I am so disappointed in that woman. I am so disappointed in Esther Smith. I am so disappointed in Esther Smith. Morris Babyface discloses why he won’t produce secular artistes

Ghanaian singer Marx Morris Twumasi, popularly known as Morris Babyface, who doubles as a songwriter and a producer, has stated that secular musicians must be ready to cross over to the Gospel arena if they want their works to be done by him.

In an interview on Wednesday, March 8 on Adwumapa Mbre on Connect FM with sit-in host Belinda Asomani,  the currently ordained pastor who was once into secular music confirmed that he has stopped producing secular music and solely focuses on Gospel music now.

He also revealed that his constant relevance can be attributed to God’s grace, his hard work and never-ending learning.

According to the singer, who has several hit songs with the likes of Esther Smith, Okyeame Kwame among others, said not all secular music contains bad content and contexts but it still does not glorify the Lord and also does not encourage people to seek God either.

Morris claims some musicians do not know the power they possess therefore “they do things anyhow” especially Gospel musicians whose songs hold so much power.

Sharing his thoughts on the Ghanaian gospel industry, Morris Babyface lamented the lack of unity among artistes, lack of authenticity and also made some comparisons between Ghana and Nigeria gospel music and their respective growths overtime.

Citing an example, he mentioned: “Nigerian gospel musicians used to come to Ghana for quality music videos and sounds about 16 to 18 years ago but not anymore”.

Also, he stated Nigerian artistes support one another to grow and succeed unlike Ghanaian artistes who deliberately suppress talents sometimes.

Morris, on his personal opinion on performing for profits as a gospel artiste, mentioned that he gladly performs for free on the grounds that the event is a free one, but in situations where tickets are being sold, he charges to perform.

He also admonished gospel musicians to charge accordingly and also called on pastors and event organizers to fairly pay artistes because they put in so much effort and resources to produce songs and it may be the only source of their livelihood.

When asked how he feels when he hears some of his secular music being played, he disclosed that it makes him feel delighted looking at his journey so far.

Morris Babyface also revealed that he is working on new songs to be released, a music school, as well as a talent hunt show for upcoming gospel musicians.

On his final remarks, he encouraged aspiring singers and sound engineers to learn more, have adequate understanding and also completely rely on God for success.

  • I would have died like Osinachi if I stayed in my previous marriage – Esther Smith

Veteran gospel musician, Esther Smith, has disclosed why she left her marriage and travelled to Germany.

In an interview with YouTuber One Ghana TV, Esther disclosed she was abused in her marriage.

She added that her son was diagnosed with a hole in his heart during that period.

“You know, my child I gave birth to in Dutchland, some people turned it around and said I had given my child to another man, and the person perpetrating those lies was someone close to me. The person was creating an impression.

“My situation would have turned out just like the lady who died in Nigeria, Osinachi’s death. So I had to quit. I had to quit because God has given us brains and sense. You have to apply it,” she divulged.

Esther also disclosed that when she left her marriage, her ex-husband made up stories that shocked her to the extent that she couldn’t defend herself until this day.

“It is not about what people are saying or doing, but then you need to think and say, where are things headed? I think I can die. So you have to quit and if you quit, it won’t make the person happy, so they will have to frame stories to tarnish your image when you know nothing about it. Since I am not good at talking too much, I had to keep quiet. That was what happened,” she explained.

She added that God has favoured each and everybody with intelligence when confronted with difficulty, but not stay in it and endure.

The ‘Onyame Ye Nyame’ artiste in 2012 disclosed that her former husband, Rev. Ahenkan Bonsu, used her as a punching bag during their four years of marriage.

On April 8, 2022, Nigerian gospel artiste, Osinachi Nwachukwu, known for her popular song ‘Ekwueme’ passed on after her husband allegedly kicked her in the chest multiple times.
