Nana Akua Addo threatens to sue Nigerian designer for defamation, demands N50 million

Ghanaian style icon Nana Akua Addo has set a 48-hour deadline for Nigerian fashion designer Ezinne Olivia to publicly apologize or face legal consequences.

The fashion world has been buzzing with talk of Nana Akua Addo and Olivia following the recent AMVCA event.

Nana Akua’s stunning outfit received widespread praise, cementing her as one of the best-dressed at the event.

Afterward, Olivia criticized Nana Akua on social media, claiming lack of credit for her contributions.

However, Nana Akua clarified that the $3,000 3D garment was conceived in Ghana and acquired from China. She emphasized her Ghanaian designer Yoli’s primary role in the creation, stating Olivia’s contribution was minor.

According to Nana Akua’s lawyers, Olivia was given the option of social media credit or financial payment and chose the latter, receiving N400,000 in full.

The legal letter also revealed that Olivia’s name was initially included in posts but was later removed at her request to avoid shared credit.

Given Olivia’s videos, Nana Akua’s lawyers are demanding a public apology within 48 hours and the removal of all related social media content. Failure to comply will lead to court action and a compensation claim of N50,000,000 for damages.

  • Most Ghanaian celebrities don’t know what ‘red carpet’ means – Fashion designer

Most Ghanaian celebrities don’t know what ‘red carpet’ means – Fashion designer

A fashion designer and actor, Amma Serwaa, has criticized Ghanaians particularly celebrities for failing to know more about the phrase ‘red carpet’ and what it requiries.

Per her observation at the just-ended VGMA, Ghanaians especially do not understand what it means to be on the red carpet, hence their choice of clothes are always wrong.

She explained the term red carpet as a welcoming color for the ancient Greek gods.

In an interview with Mercy Bee the Ekumfi Princess, Ghana’s ‘Girl Vibes’ show, she said: “As time went by, painters started using red carpet in their paintings because they felt it signified royalty. So, the term red carpet is used to explain elegance and royalty hence, anyone who walks on any red carpet needs to look elegant and like royalty”.

She believes that anyone on any red carpet should look his or her best, and it should be evident from their head to their feet.

“You need to understand the red carpet when dressing, and also have to take into consideration the details of the dress you’re wearing because it is also very important,” she said.

  • LGBTQ activist found dead in metal box in Kenya

LGBTQ activist found dead in metal box in Kenya

Edwin Chiloba, a young fashion designer and LGBTQ activist, was found dead in a metal box by the side of the road not far from the town of Eldoret, and police in Kenya are now looking into his death.

According to a police spokesperson quoted in the Star newspaper, there is no indication as to why the victim was killed.

However, rights organisations are connecting it to his sexuality in Kenya, where gay sex is illegal.

According to one organisation, more than half of LGBTQ Kenyans have experienced assault.

“Words cannot even explain how we as a community are feeling right now. Another soul lost due to hate. You will be missed,” rights organisation galck+ posted on Twitter.

“Edwin’s death reminds us that queer bodies continue to be under attack all over the country,” the National Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission wrote on Instagram.

Tributes on social media describe Chiloba as “an amazing human” and an “iconic fashion designer”.

Last month Chiloba wrote on Instagram that he was “going to fight for all marginalised people”, saying that he himself had been marginalised.

He “spread love wherever he went, was bold about his existence as a queer man and encouraged many others to do the same,” Chris Makena, an activist and friend of Chiloba, told the BBC.

The 24-year-old had moved to Eldoret from the capital, Nairobi, in 2019 to study fashion and was beginning to make a name for himself in design, another friend said.

His body was discovered on Wednesday.

A witness is quoted as saying that someone in a vehicle without a number plate was seen leaving a metal box at the side of the road.

It was reported to the police, who went to open the box to find the corpse.

“We don’t know for now why he was killed that way. Experts are handling the matter,” police spokesperson Resila Onyango is quoted as saying.

Gay sex in Kenya is punishable by up to 14 years in prison. Though it is rarely enforced, members of the country’s LGBTQ community routinely face discrimination and stigma, and efforts to decriminalise gay sex have been thwarted.

Last year, the killing of non-binary lesbian Sheila Lumumba led to a social media campaign to get #JusticeForSheila.

There were similar campaigns in 2021 following the murders of trans-woman activist Erica Chandra and LGBTQ activist Joash Mosoti.

  • Consider your body type when choosing a style – Fashion designer

Chief Executive Officer of Paris Fashion, Paris Hannahbell, has urged individuals to put their body type into consideration before selecting a particular type of dress.

She explained fashion as the art of designing and beautifying clothes with accessories to fit a particular figure.

According to her, a lot of clients just bring in styles to be made for them without taking into consideration their body type.

Speaking to Rashida Hamid on e.tv Ghana’s ‘Girl Vibes’ show, she said, “They expect what you’re sewing for them to fit them the same way they see it in the picture or video they brought, forgetting they don’t have the same body type as the model, hence, the style might not look good on them.”

She emphasized that as a designer, she will always want her client to look good, prioritizing their looks before proceeding to sew a particular dress for her.

“I sometimes try to talk them out of it and help them find a solution to it. Only a few listen and others don’t. When things don’t turn out as expected, they blame me,” she disclosed.

Paris furthered that designers should not only consider the money they’ll make but should also think about their reputation and that of clients.

She advised fashion designers to always find a polite way to tell their clients when a design they bring doesn’t fit.
