Firefighters rescue staff trapped in elevator during dumsor in Parliament

Firefighters in Parliament are currently working to rescue individuals trapped in elevators following a power disconnection by the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).

The disconnection was carried out due to an outstanding debt of GH¢23 million owed by Parliament House and Job 600, the office complex for Members of Parliament.

The disconnection is part of ECG’s “Operation Zero Balance” initiative, aiming to recover outstanding debts from various customers. Despite efforts to collect the debt from parliamentary facilities, the disconnection was deemed necessary, highlighting the challenges faced by ECG in debt recovery and ensuring sustainable electricity supply.

This development comes amid ongoing power cuts in parts of Ghana, including Accra, the capital city.

Nana Amoasi IV from the Institute for Energy Security (IES) has warned that these power cuts may persist unless immediate action is taken to address issues related to installed capacity and fuel supply in the power sector.

The ECG has not provided a clear explanation for the power outages or issued a load shedding timetable, causing disruptions in daily life for many residents.

VIDEO: Hwidiem Zongo residents attack firefighters

Residents of Hwidiem Zongo in the Asutifi district of the Ahafo Region on Sunday, February 18, are said to have attacked officers of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS).

Per reports, the peeved residents injured a fire tender driver, firefighter, and vandalized a fire tender.

This was after they accused firefighters of arriving at the scene late, something that the Ghana National Fire Service has denied.

This comes at a time when the Ghana National Fire Service is demanding justice and police protection following recent attacks on firefighters across the country.

Recently, officers of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) had to discontinue their efforts to battle a fierce blaze at Pra Junction when a group of individuals attacked them.

On Saturday, February 10, 2024, the Konongo-Odumasi Fire Station received a distress fire call reporting another outbreak near Stellex Pharmacy in Konongo.

Rushing to the scene after containing the initial fire at Pra Junction, the crew faced hostility from the public upon arrival, resulting in damage to their borrowed fire engine.

Police in the Ashanti Region have launched investigations into a mob assault on personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS).

  • Replace firemen killed in the course of duty with qualifying relatives – Interior Minister to GNFS

Replace firemen killed in the course of duty with qualifying relatives – Interior Minister to GNFS

Minister of Interior, Mr. Ambrose Dery, has proposed that the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) implements a system that will substitute fire personnel who die in the line of duty with relatives who meet the necessary requirements.

To the Minister, this scheme, if well implemented, will go a long way not only to ease the pain of family members who have lost a loved one in the service but also to boost the morale of fire officers.

Mr. Abrose Dery said rewarding and honouring personnel who die during duty are the best motivating factor in any field of work.

He, therefore, charged the GNFS to come out with modalities on how the scheme seeks to replace personnel who have lost their lives in the line of duty with family members with the right qualifications.

The Minister also touched on benefits for firefighters who die of diseases in the discharge of their duties.

So far, five firefighters have lost their lives in the line of duty.

Among the injured, two suffered serious injuries and the seven more were being evaluated.

Ms St-Pierre said investigators and accident reconstruction experts were working to establish the circumstances of the crash.

‘Everything indicates it was an isolated incident, and that there is no more danger in the area, and there is just one suspect,’ she said.

The incident happened along St-Benoit Boulevard in Amqui, a town about 220 miles northeast of Quebec City.

Authorities have not yet mentioned any motive. It comes just a month after a man driving a city bus deliberately smashed into a daycare centre in Laval, killing two children.
