Floyd Mayweather risks losing his Bugatti, Ferrari due to breach of contract with a Nigerian company

A California court has ordered legendary boxer Floyd Mayweather to pay $2.4 million to Nigerian company Zzini Media Concept Limited after ruling that he breached an agreement to conduct promotional visits to various African countries, including Nigeria.

According to several reports from Nigerian media, the California Court of Appeal also found Mayweather guilty of fraud.

The case revolves around a contract that required Mayweather to make multiple trips to Africa, starting with a visit to Nigeria in June 2017. However, he did not fulfill his obligations, prompting Zzini Media Concept to seek legal recourse for reimbursement.

Mayweather’s legal team contended that since Zzini Media Concept is not based in the U.S., it did not have the authority to enforce payment. Nonetheless, the company successfully filed a lawsuit in a lower court.

The court ruled in favor of Zzini Media Concept, ordering Mayweather to pay $1,638,542 in damages, $721,881.32 in prejudgment interest, $16,270 in attorney fees, and $285 in court costs.

Despite Mayweather’s attempt to appeal the decision, the California Court of Appeal upheld the lower court’s ruling on August 27, 2024.

Following the court’s verdict, Alex Nwankwo, an executive at Zzini Media Concept, remarked that the company’s success was due to a solid case.

He explained, “After several unsuccessful attempts to recover the appearance fees, the company filed a legal action against Mayweather in 2018, alleging breach of contract, unjust enrichment, and fraud.”

“We are grateful that two courts have granted Zzini Media Ltd’s request to impose sanctions against Mayweather,” the statement continued.

Mayweather has reportedly refused to pay the amount, prompting the court to issue a fresh order targeting his assets, specifically his 2015 Bugatti GSV or his 2015 Ferrari LaFerrari Aperta.

The company’s statement further noted, “We have already defeated Mayweather and his attorneys numerous times in these proceedings, so the enforcement of the judgment will proceed. Our forensic investigators have also uncovered substantial assets indicating that Mayweather has been overstating his net worth.”

  • Mayweather easily defeats YouTube star Deji in boxing exhibition

Floyd Mayweather collected a routine victory in his exhibition boxing match against YouTube star Deji Olatunji on Sunday.

Mayweather, who is considered one of the greatest boxers to ever live, was never threatened, slowly building his pace in the eight-round fight.

He finished the job in the sixth round with an extended flurry, allowing the referee to step in and call it off for a TKO victory.

It is Mayweather’s third exhibition since May as he continues to accept fights from non-professional boxers, having last fought professionally against Conor McGregor back in 2017, while his last win against a boxer was in 2015.

Speaking in the ring to DAZN after the result, Mayweather pointed to some swelling under his own eye as an indication that the crowd got their money’s worth.

“I’m glad that he landed a good shot, this is part of fighting, this is a part of entertainment,” he said. “These people want to see entertainment, and fun, and that’s what we both gave them tonight.”

He finished with some encouraging words to his opponent, saying “you’re a hell of a fighter, a hell of a competitor, keep up the great work, and keep building”.

  • The Minneapolis police officer who knelt on George Floyd’s neck had 18 previous complaints against him, police department says

The former Minneapolis police officer seen in a video with his knee on George Floyd’s neck had 18 prior complaints filed against him with the Minneapolis Police Department’s Internal Affairs, according to the police department.

It’s unclear what the internal affairs complaints against the officer, Derek Chauvin, were for. MPD did not provide additional details.
Chauvin was fired this week, along with three other MPD officers who were present when Chauvin knelt on Floyd’s neck. Police have said they were responding to an alleged forgery at a corner store.
Floyd, a 46-year-old black man who was unarmed and handcuffed, pleaded that he could not breathe. He was soon after declared dead at a nearby hospital, according to authorities.
Floyd’s death and video of the incident have sparked widespread anger, destructive protests and calls for the officers involved to face criminal charges.
Only two of the 18 complaints against Chauvin were “closed with discipline,” according to a MPD internal affairs public summary. In both cases, the “discipline issued” column indicated that a letter of reprimand had been issued in response.
Chauvin was not the only officer on the scene that day with a history of complaints against him.
Former officer Tou Thao had six complaints filed with internal affairs, one of which was still open, according to the public summary released Thursday. The other five complaints had been closed without discipline.
The two other officers involved had no complaints filed against them, per MPD internal affairs.
CNN has reached out to attorneys representing the officers for comment.

One officer was the subject of a lawsuit

Thao was also part of a 2017 excessive force lawsuit that was settled by the city of Minneapolis, according to a settlement obtained by CNN and an attorney for the plaintiff in the case.
The lawsuit was brought by Lamar Ferguson, who claimed in the suit that Thao and another officer subjected him to “cruel and unusual” punishment when they arrested him in October 2014.
According to the lawsuit, the officers used “unreasonable force,” including “punches, kicks and knees to the face and body while Ferguson was defenseless and handcuffed.” As a result, Ferguson suffered broken teeth, bruising and trauma, the lawsuit says.
The city would go on to pay Ferguson and his attorney $25,000 to settle the lawsuit on December 11, 2017.
Both the city and the officers denied liability in the settlement, according to a 2017 statement from the city of Minneapolis.
According to the lawsuit, Ferguson was walking home from his grandmother’s house with his pregnant girlfriend on October 7, 2014, when they were approached by a Minneapolis police car with Thao and another office inside.
The lawsuit claims the officers handcuffed Ferguson despite having no probable cause to believe he had committed a crime.
The officers took Ferguson’s wallet and ID and the second officer ran the ID through the National Crime Information Center, a federal database, but no warrant showed up in the system, the lawsuit said.
Despite this, the second officer “falsely stated that there was a warrant out for Plaintiff’s arrest,” the lawsuit states. The officer questioned Ferguson about a previous incident involving people who the officer believed were Ferguson’s family members, but Ferguson “said he had no information to tell the officers.”
A physical altercation broke out, according to the lawsuit, then Thao threw Ferguson to the ground and began hitting him. Thao allegedly lifted Ferguson’s head up by grabbing the back of Ferguson’s hoodie as the other officer allegedly kicked him in the mouth.
Ferguson was taken to a hospital, but allegedly the officers “expressed impatience with medical staff caring” for Ferguson. When he was discharged, the officers allegedly threw his discharge papers — including prescription painkillers — in the garbage as they left the hospital, the lawsuit states.

  • Roger Mayweather dies aged 58

Roger Mayweather, former world boxing champion and uncle and trainer to Floyd, has died aged 58.

He was a two-weight world champion in stellar 72-fight career that spanned 17 years.

He then became the trainer to his nephew Floyd Mayweather who famously built himself into boxing’s top attraction and its pound-for-pound best fighter during the 2010s.

Floyd, in recent years, had addressed his uncle Roger’s poor health.

Roger’s passing comes a week after the death of Josie Harris, mother to three of Floyd Mayweather’s children.

Mayweather Jr released the following statement through Mayweather Promotions, saying:

“My uncle was one of the most important people in my life inside and outside of the ring. Roger was a great champion and one of the best trainers in boxing. Unfortunately, his health was failing him for several years and now he can finally rest in peace.

“Roger meant the world to me, my father Floyd Sr., my uncle Jeff, our whole family, everyone in and around the Mayweather Boxing Gym and the entire boxing world. It is a terrible loss for all of us.”

“This is a sad day for the Mayweather Promotions family because that is truly what Roger was to us,” said Leonard Ellerbe, CEO of Mayweather Promotions who worked side-by-side with Roger for some of Floyd’s biggest fights.

“On top of being a phenomenal fighter in his own career, Roger was one of the most essential parts of guiding Floyd to the incredible career he had in becoming the best ever. We hope you keep Floyd and the entire Mayweather family in your thoughts and prayers during this time.”

“We are thankful for all the love and well-wishes we have already received as word travelled about Roger’s passing,” said Mayweather.

“It helps me to see that he was able to touch so many people through his life in boxing, because he gave so much to the sport which was his first and longtime love.”

Nicknamed ‘the Black Mamba’ Roger Mayweather became a professional boxer alongside his brothers Floyd Senior and Jeff.

He was by far the most successful of the trio, and won world titles at super-featherweight and light-welterweight.

Roger then became a key part of his nephew Floyd’s rise. Roger trained him for his debut although he was briefly replaced when Floyd Sr was released from prison and took control of his son’s career.

From 2000 onwards Roger was in the corner for 20 consecutive fights with Floyd, including his famous battles with Arturo Gatti, Oscar De La Hoya and Ricky Hatton.

But Roger was struggling with diabetes in 2016 and was again replaced as Floyd’s trainer by the boxer’s father.
