  • Forex Bureaus shut down in Nigeria’s capital

Forex Bureaus shut down in Nigeria’s capital

Currency exchange office in Nigeria’s capital city Abuja has closed down temporarily because there is not enough US dollars available.

Nigerians use American money for buying and selling things with other countries.

Abdulahi Dauran, leader of the group, told the BBC that they decided to do this to let Nigerians know they are worried about the shortage of dollars. He said it’s because of cryptocurrency and people who buy and sell things online.

“We want to close the Bureau market so that people know we are also concerned about what is happening,” he said.

Mr Dauran said that speculators like Binance and Aboki website are making the situation worse, and many Nigerians depend on them a lot.

The Central Bank is trying to make the country’s exchange rate more steady. This is happening while new changes are being made.

The central bank has told banks to sell any extra dollars they have by February 1, 2024.

They told lenders not to keep too much foreign money just to make money from it.

  • How armed robbers stole GHC400k from a forex bureau at Ngleshie Amanfro

Two armed men on a motorbike reportedly robbed a Forex Bureau of approximately GH¢400,000.

The incident occurred around Amanfro Top Town in the Ga South Municipality of the Greater Accra Region, according to sources from Citi News.

Alhaji Mumuni, the owner of the Forex Bureau and a gold dealer, mentioned that the suspects had been monitoring their movements from Kasoa Zongo before robbing them at Amanfro Top Town, where the business operates.

Alhaji Mumuni recounted how the entire incident took place.

“We received a call from a client in Amanfro, so we decided to meet them. While we were on our way, we noticed two people on motorbikes, but we didn’t pay much attention.”

“As we approached our destination, the two men on the motorbike attacked us and demanded the money in the bag. My other brother resisted, but one of the robbers insisted and pulled out a gun, firing a warning shot.”

“With no other choice, my brother handed over the bag to the robbers. In the bag, we had about four hundred thousand cedis, including some foreign currency,” he narrated.

According to him, they have reported the case to the Ngleshie Amanfro Police, and they have visited the scene to commence the investigation.

Eyewitness Jonathan Essel stated that, although they initially considered intervening, the armed robbers were carrying guns, which deterred them from taking any action.

“After the robbers took the bags, one of them claimed to be a police officer, and they were armed, making it difficult for us to confront them. There were two guys on a motorbike, and it had no number plate,” Jonathan Essel added.

The armed robbers, riding a motorbike, intercepted them, brandished pistols, and fired shots into the air.

  • BoG plans to sell $120m to BDCs in third quarter of 2023

BoG plans to sell $120m to BDCs in third quarter of 2023

In the third quarter of 2023, Bank of Ghana (BoG) has announced its plan to sell $120 million to Bulk Oil Distribution Companies (BDCs) through the FX Forward Auction Calendar.

As per the schedule outlined in the calendar, $40 million will be auctioned in July, August, and September 2023 respectively. In July, $20 million will be sold on both the 14th and 28th. In August, $20 million will be sold on both the 15th and 30th. Lastly, in September, $40 million will be sold, with $20 million each being sold on the 14th and 29th.

The aim of this FX support to the BDCs is to alleviate the dollar liquidity constraints faced by oil importers, which will help enhance the supply of petroleum products and stabilize prices at fuel stations.

     Bank of Ghana (BoG)

The Bank of Ghana emphasizes that the BDCs Forex Forward Auction will be governed by guidelines published and available on its official website.

Interested parties are invited to submit bids in the prescribed format to purchase United States Dollars against Ghana cedis, separately on each auction date, via the dedicated email bogforwards@bog.gov.gh.

It is important to note that the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has previously advised the Central Bank to consider suspending the program due to concerns over the emergence of multiple exchange rates resulting from the BoG’s occasional provision of forex support at rates that differ from those prevailing in the market.

The IMF expects the BoG to ensure that its forex liquidity is provided at market exchange rates and to implement measures supporting the unification of exchange rates across the board.

  • Prof Baah-Boateng propounds solution to Ghana’s cedi depreciation

Prof Baah-Boateng propounds solution to Ghana’s cedi depreciation

Economist, Professor William Baah-Boateng, has urged the Bank of Ghana to institute laws that ensure that forex bureaus across the country only buy foreign currencies and sell only the cedi.

According to him, this is a sure way to help control the cedi’s depreciation on the international market.

He said, Ghanaians’ easy access to foreign currency at the various forex bureaus is what has significantly contributed to the dollarisation of the economy and the subsequent tanking of the cedi.

Speaking on JoyNews’ PM Express Business Edition, he said unless a Ghanaian is travelling abroad, they should not be given foreign currency.

“I don’t understand why as a Ghanaian if I’m not travelling I can go to the forex bureau and say I need dollars. What am I using the dollars for?” he said.

He said similar laws are applied in other foreign countries like Finland and Germany where foreign currencies are not accepted in the country during transactions.

“So for me I think if the central bank, if Bank of Ghana law and regulation can be reviewed and say that forex bureau are supposed to mop-up foreign currency for the bank but not to sell, it means that if I come from outside and I need cedis I can walk to forex bureau and give them my foreign currency and get the cedis, but not get dollar and give my cedis.

“When you do that it means if I’m travelling – and it happens in many other countries and my colleagues at central bank they travel more than I do, they know. And I’ll give you Finland as one of the countries. If you enter Finland, you cannot buy any good or service with any currency like dollar or so on or even Germany.

“I was in Germany and I wanted to buy something and I didn’t have enough euros and I thought I could use my dollar, I went there they said ‘we can’t use go and change it to euro before we can use it.’ Because the rules are there so nobody will then go and buy dollar and so on.

“So you use the local currency and when you’re leaving you get to the airport, you get your boarding pass, at the last point there’s a forex bureau there you can change and get the dollar. And if we’re able to insist on this why would we need the dollar in Ghana? Why do I have to buy the dollar as a store of value?” he explained.

  • How a 56-year-old woman allegedly defrauded a forex bureau owner

How a 56-year-old woman allegedly defrauded a forex bureau owner

Florence Bondze Adofo, a 56-year-old trader, is currently being prosecuted for allegedly attempting to trick a forex bureau owner, Chief Haruna Saley, in a transaction worth $45,000.

According to a news report by The Chronicle, the accused person told Chief Saley that she had $45,000 she was willing to exchange for GH¢652,500.

However, when the GH¢652,500 was given to her, she failed to produce the $45,000.

The police prosecutor for the case, Inspector Cyrus E. Conduah, told the court that the accused person (Florence Bondze Adofo), with the help of a police officer, Detective Corporal Thompson Abraham Ntosour, contacted Chief Haruna Saley to sell the $45,000 she had in her possession.

Both Bondze Adofo and Chief Saley agreed that the $45,000 would be exchanged for GH¢652,500.

According to Inspector Conduah, Chief Saley and the police officer, who was acting as a middleman, met Bondze Adofo at the SIC Mall car park at Makola in Accra, where the GH¢652,500 was handed to the accused.

Florence, after receiving the money, demanded that Chief Saley should wait behind while the police officer accompanied her to Opera Square to get the US$45,000.

The police officer and Florence went to Opera Square, and she asked him to wait behind an office while she went for the dollars, only for her to come back without the US$45,000.

The prosecutor indicated that she told the police officer who accompanied her that her partner, Abdulai Hashim, could not raise the entire US$45,000 and that he was waiting on more dollars to be able to raise the said amount.

They returned to inform the owner of the forex bureau about the state of the transaction, and the accused person told him that they had to wait for a while for the total amount of dollars to be raised by her partners.

After waiting for some time, the victim became suspicious and ordered the arrest of the accused, whom they took to the Accra Central Police Station and lodged a complaint.

The prosecution also disclosed that during the investigation into the matter, the accused person admitted that she did not have the dollars and that her partner Abdulai Hashim and his boss Alhaji Taminu informed her that they had $70,000 that they were selling.

She admitted that she took the GH¢652,500 which she gave to Alhaji Taminu. Abdulai Hashim was subsequently arrested, and he also admitted that he had received GH¢60,500 from Florence. His boss, Alhaji Taminu, is, however, nowhere to be found.

Both Florence and Abdulai were charged with conspiracy to commit a crime, defrauding by false pretences, and dishonestly receiving charges.

They have both pleaded not guilty to the charges and have been granted bail by the Accra Circuit Court.

Florence received bail in the sum of GH¢600,000 with three sureties, and Abdulai received bail in the sum of GH¢100,000 with one surety. The case was adjourned to April 17, 2023, for continuation.

  • How to know if a forex brokerage is trustworthy?

How to know if a forex brokerage is trustworthy?

Dealing in foreign currencies can be very rewarding, so as a foreign currency trader, choosing a brokerage that you can trust is critical. In this article, we will discuss some of the methods for determining the dependability of a forex brokerage.

    Administration of regulations and licenses

While looking for a trustworthy trading platform, the first thing to look for is the brokerage’s regulation and licensing status. Which government agency is in charge of regulating forex brokers varies from country to country. This is done to protect traders. The National Futures Association (NFA) and the Commodities Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), to name two examples from the United States, are in charge of regulating foreign currency brokers in that country.

The United Kingdom has the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), Cyprus has the Cyprus Securities and Exchange Commission (CySEC), and the European Union has the Markets in Financial Instruments Directive (MiFID II).

A reputable agency that regulates and registers a foreign exchange brokerage makes sure that the broker follows the laws and rules. This, in turn, ensures that your money is safe and that transactions are carried out honestly.

    Platforms for buying and selling

A reputable forex brokerage should supply customers with a stable and secure trading platform. A good trading platform should be simple to use and easy to navigate. Moreover, the platform should supply traders with a number of trading tools and indicators to help them make informed trading decisions.

Many forex brokers like to use the MetaTrader 4 (MT4) platform, due to its ease of use and vast collection of trading tools.

A trustworthy forex broker should also provide a mobile trading platform that works with both Apple’s iOS and Google’s Android operating systems so that traders can monitor their transactions and make trades while moving around.

    Customer help

The quality of the broker’s customer service is another crucial factor to take into account when looking for a trustworthy forex broker. A reliable forex broker should have a proactive customer support service that is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The people who work in customer service should be able to answer your questions quickly and accurately.

You can figure out how good a forex broker’s customer service is by sending them an email or calling their helpline and seeing how quickly and efficiently they answer your questions and concerns.

The phrases “spreads” and “commissions” are used interchangeably

Spreads and commissions are highly significant aspects to consider when choosing a forex broker. A trustworthy foreign exchange broker should provide clear and easy-to-understand spreads and charges, as well as affordable pricing.

The spread is the difference between the bid and ask prices of a currency pair. The spread is the source of profit for forex brokers. A reputable forex broker must provide tight spreads that are similar to those supplied by other forex brokers.

Commissions are yet another means by which forex brokers create cash for themselves. Commissions are fees charged on each transaction that are sometimes stated as a percentage of the entire value of the transaction. A reputable forex broker’s commission rates should be modest and similar to those of other forex brokers.

    Deposit and withdrawal alternatives

A reputable foreign exchange broker should let customers deposit and withdraw money in a number of ways, such as bank transfers, credit cards, electronic wallets, and cryptocurrency exchanges.

A reputable forex broker should also have quick and risk-free ways to withdraw your money. Withdrawals should be processed in a reasonable length of time, and there should be no extra fees.

    Educational resources

A reputable forex broker should provide traders with access to educational materials and trading tools to help them grow their trading skills. A reliable forex broker should provide its customers with access to a wide range of educational resources, such as trading manuals, video tutorials, and webinars.

A trustworthy forex broker should also give customers access to a wide range of trading tools, such as economic calendars, market research, and trading signals. Traders can increase their chances of success by employing these tools, which can help them make more informed trading decisions.

    Customer reputation and feedback

When figuring out how trustworthy a forex broker is, you should look at both their reputation and reviews. When choosing a forex broker, it is essential to do research and read reviews posted by other traders. This might help you figure out what the pros and cons of working with the broker are.

You can also look at the forex broker’s social media pages to see how they interact with their clients and the trading community in general. A reliable forex broker should be active on many social media sites and respond quickly to questions and concerns from clients.

    Transparency

Another key thing to consider when searching for a reliable forex broker is the broker’s transparency. A forex broker should always be clear and honest about the fees, spreads, and commissions they charge. Moreover, their terms and conditions must be crystal clear and straightforward to understand.

A trustworthy forex broker should also make their financial records and audit results accessible to their clients. This proves that they are truthful about their financial operations and that you can trust them with your money.

    Conclusion

Lastly, it’s important to choose a reliable forex broker if you want to keep your money safe and make sure your transactions go smoothly. A reliable forex broker should be regulated and licensed, have a reliable trading platform, competitive spreads and commissions, a variety of deposit and withdrawal options, educational resources and trading tools, a responsive customer support team, a good reputation and positive reviews, and be clear about their fees and financial activities.

It is important to keep these factors in mind when choosing a forex broker. Doing so will help to assure you that you are working with a trustworthy and competent broker that can aid you in accomplishing your objectives as a forex trader.

  • Gov’t announces 5 measures to stop free fall of cedi

The Government of Ghana has adopted five measures to prevent further free fall of the cedi.

President Akufo-Addo announced these measures on Sunday, when he addressed the nation on the country’s current economic crisis.

    The measures he said are:

    1. Enhanced supervisory action by the Bank of Ghana in the forex bureau markets and the black market to flush out illegal operators, as well as ensuring that those permitted to operate legally abide by the market rules. Already some forex bureaus have had their licenses revoked, and this exercise will continue until complete order is restored in the sector.
    2. Fresh inflows of dollars are providing liquidity to the foreign exchange market, and addressing the pipeline demand;
    3. The Bank of Ghana has given its full commitment to the commercial banks to provide liquidity to ensure the wheels of the economy continue to run in a stabilized manner, till the IMF Programme kicks in and the financing assurances expected from other partners also come in;
    4. Government is working with the Bank of Ghana and the oil-producing and mining companies to introduce a new legal and regulatory framework to ensure that all foreign exchange earned from operations in Ghana are, initially, paid to banks domiciled in Ghana to help boost the domestic foreign exchange market; and
    5. The Bank of Ghana will enhance its gold purchase programme.

President Akufo-Addo said he was confident that “these immediate measures designed to change the structure of our balance of payment flows, sanitise the foreign exchange market to ensure that the banks and forex bureaus operate along international best practices, together with strengthened supervision, will go a long way to sanitise our foreign exchange market, and make it more resilient against external vulnerabilities going forward.”

The cedi was tagged by Bloomberg as the worst-performing currency in 2022 with its trading value at around GH¢14 to a dollar.

Prices of products such as fuel, cooking oil, rice and other imported items have gone up astronomically within the last few weeks following the depreciation of the cedi.

The continuous free fall of the cedi compelled the Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA) to declare a strike to force government to take steps to strengthen the currency.

  • Armed robbers raid forex bureau close to Police headquarters

Two armed men on a motorbike broke into a forex bureau close to the Police Headquarters in Osu in broad daylight and bolted with a sum of money on Wednesday, June 9.

A video of the incident which has since gone viral shows the two robbers raid the forex bureau in a matter of minutes and flee the scene on a motorcycle, firing warning shots into the air.

The security man at post stood in shock as the robbers rode past him and also made way through thick traffic while there was a policeman at post at the traffic light at the time the incident occurred.

An eyewitness account of the incident complained about how the police whose office was not far from the scene of the incident failed to pursue the robbers.

Despite firing the warning shots, no casualty was recorded.

Elsewhere in Accra on the same day, another robbery case was recorded where a 34-year-old man was robbed and shot at Pigfarm.

Apparently, the robbers had tracked him and eventually stopped him at the Pigfarm roundabout where they asked him to surrender his valuables.
