Idris Elba’s film studio project gains support of Ga Mantse

British actor and filmmaker Idris Elba has received royal backing from the Ga Mantse, King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II, for his ambitious plan to establish a world-class film studio in Ghana.

During a grand ceremony at the Ga Mantse Palace in Accra on Tuesday, March 25, 2025, Elba was honoured as a son of the Ga land in recognition of his contributions to the African diaspora and his commitment to Ghana’s creative industry.

The event featured traditional drumming, dancing, and cultural displays, underscoring the significance of the occasion. Elba was welcomed by Justice Naa Yaale, Chief of Staff to the Ga Mantse and daughter of Ghana’s independence hero, Ako Adjei.

Speaking at the gathering, the award-winning filmmaker reaffirmed his dedication to strengthening Africa’s film industry. He announced that 22 acres of land near Osu Castle have been secured for the development of a film studio and school aimed at training and employing young Ghanaian creatives.

“One of the goals I have tried to achieve is to bring the industry back to Africa,” Elba stated. “We have earmarked 22 acres of land beside Osu Castle for a fantastic studio and school that will serve our community in Accra.”

His vision is to establish a globally recognized production hub in Ghana, enabling local filmmakers to thrive while attracting international collaborations.

King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II praised the initiative, describing it as a step in the right direction for Ghana’s creative industry. He highlighted the importance of equipping the youth with the right tools to succeed.

“Our children lack direction, our youth lack direction, and we need these tools,” the Ga Mantse said. “So, coming in to put up a studio and to partner with us is the way forward. That is why we will support it absolutely so that the creative arts industry, especially, creating Ga content, can move to its next step.”

Elba’s film studio project is expected to boost Ghana’s film and entertainment industry, providing new opportunities for aspiring filmmakers, actors, and production crews. The royal endorsement further strengthens his mission to position Ghana as a major player in African cinema.

Ga Mantse appeals to govt to pursue production of Azumah Nelson film

Ga Mantse, King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II, has urged the government to dedicate itself to creating films that highlight some of Ghana’s overlooked narratives.

In a speech delivered by Joy FM sports journalist Nathaniel Attoh at the second edition of the Africa Cinema Summit held at the Mövenpick Hotel in Accra, the traditional leader emphasized the importance of cinema in preserving cultural heritage.

Additionally, he requested that the government produce a film chronicling the life and achievements of renowned Ghanaian boxer Azumah Nelson.

“One random [story], considering that we are on Ga and Ga-Adamgbe land and considering that he is a custodian of the Ga Adamgbe culture, is the story of one of the most achieved athletes on the African continent, Barima Professor Azumah Zumzum Nelson, who is a son of the Ga soil.

His story has that of culture, inspiration, and projection for the future, the African way. This is one of the many stories that can be pursued in a very vigorous way by the government that takes over in the year 2025,” he said.

Azumah Nelson is a former professional boxer from Ghana who competed from 1979 to 2008. He is a two-weight world champion, having held the WBC featherweight title from 1984 to 1987 and the WBC super featherweight title twice between 1988 and 1997. Additionally, he made a bid for the unified WBC and IBF lightweight titles in 1990.

On a regional level, he secured the ABU and Commonwealth featherweight titles from 1980 to 1982. Nelson is widely regarded as one of the greatest African boxers in history.

In discussing the future of African cinema, the King expressed optimism and highlighted how foreign media often emphasize negative narratives about the continent.

“We also remember with a lot of pain the images that have been projected in the foreign media away from the African continent, and we all do know what we are talking about.

Those unfortunate images of people who are distressed and woken by the sides of the streets were in actual fact the people in Rwanda and their leadership under His Excellency President Kagame, looking at a future or they were looking at a day like today,” he said.
King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II, therefore, admonished Africans to take advantage of film as a tool for social change.

“As we embark on this journey at the Africa Cinema Summit, let us reaffirm our commitment to cinema as a vital tool for cultural preservation, economic empowerment, and social transformation. The relevance of cinema cannot be overstated. It is a reflection of our past, and the representation of our present, as well as a projection of our future,” he further noted.

The four-day summit commenced on October 7, 2024, and is scheduled to conclude on Thursday, October 10, 2024.

This year’s program emphasizes enhancing the quality of local content production and consumption, advocating for increased investment in the cinema sector.

The inaugural edition of the summit attracted filmmakers from 20 African nations to Ghana, facilitating discussions on advancing cinema across the continent.

This year’s gathering is even larger, featuring more dynamic conversations aimed at further solidifying the advancements achieved in the African cinema industry, while promoting collaboration, innovation, and sustainable growth.

Notable attendees include Idris Elba, the British actor of Ghanaian heritage, who was a prominent figure at the event’s opening.

Among the planned activities for the 2024 summit is a Legacy Award ceremony set for Wednesday, October 9, 2024, at the Mövenpick Hotel.

The summit is expected to serve as a crucial platform for furthering collaboration, innovation, and sustainable growth in the African cinema industry.

We need a national development agenda, not manifestos – Ga Mantse to political parties

The Ga Mantse, Nii Teiku Tsuru II, has asked political leaders to prioritize a unified, long and short-term development plan for the nation instead of individual party manifestos that are barely implemented.

He said, instead of creating sets of policies and promises that may change with each election cycle, political parties should rather come up with a consistent, strategic plan that all parties can follow to ensure continuity and stability in the country’s development efforts.

Nii Teiku Tsuru II, is certain that this would prevent the disruption in development caused by each new government abandoning previous initiatives to implement their own.

“Ghana has evolved from manifestos. We’ve repeatedly heard promises of “we will do this, we will do that,” but what have you done. And this goes to all the parties I have seen assume government positions. But what I am telling them is that, we need is a national development agenda with strategic short-term, mid-term, and long-term plans for the country’s growth. Such that any party who rules comes to continue tangible developmental plans that is being executed. Because we cannot continue with the cycle where one party starts a free education system but doesn’t complete it, and then the next party in power abandons it to initiate its own program,” he stated.

The Ga Mantse further expressed frustration and concern over the abandoned affordable housing projects near Prampram.

For him, It highlights the waste of public funds and taxpayers’ money committed to these projects, only for them to be abandoned due to power change.

“Consider the affordable housing projects on the way to Prampram for instance, it’s disheartening. How can public funds and taxpayers’ money be committed to such projects only to be abandoned? This approach is unacceptable. I speak from an unbiased perspective as a father not a politician. I have no political interest,” the traditional leader indicated.

At the end, Nii Teiku Tsuru II sent a word to remind political leaders that they owe an allegiance to Ghanaians as well as the Gas and Damgbes a social contract that needs to be cleared.

“I’m reminding you of your responsibility to Ghanaians. Specifically, for the Gas and Ga Dangbes, you have a social contract with us. How much does it cost to install a borehole in Bukuom? How much does it cost to provide dual desks for students, so 3 of them don’t have to share one desk during exams? You have been entrusted with leadership, and this is not something to take lightly. Whether you are part of the executive, legislature, or judiciary, you are accountable to the people and must act responsibly”, he stated

However, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has declined to sign the bill into law, citing legal concerns.
