  • Cedi is struggling because of speculation, stop it – NPP tasks media

Richard Ahiagbah, the National Communications Director of the governing New Patriotic Party, (NPP) is concerned about the continued depreciation of the Ghana cedi.

He is equally concerned about what he describes as ‘talking down’ the currency which is currently the worst against the US dollar globally according to a Bloomberg report.

“The widespread talking down of the cedi is contributing largely to the struggle of the cedi. The technical word for it is speculation. The speculation must stop,” he tweeted on Friday, October 21.

His tweet was in reaction to a description of the cedi as ‘worthless’ in a news reportage by Accra-based TV3.

Ahiagbah was echoing a similar concern raised by a leading member of the NPP, Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko, who had in a series of Facebook posts warned against how journalists especially describe the cedi.

Gabby holds that whenever journalists report negatively on the cedi, they become accessories to fuel speculation about the currency and thus become complicit in its depreciation.

He wrote in a Facebook post on October 20 thus: “Journalists can report and influence. But where the default mode is to influence negatively, such media houses run the risk of becoming partners in speculation.

“It is not the job of journalists and analysts to fix the cedi; but fixing it is not helped if they make it more their job to fuel speculations.

“The cedi may be worth 60% less now than what it was to the US dollar last year. But it is not worthless! My sympathies go to the many, many businesses and consumers out there who simply do not know where to turn,” the post added.

His comments come a day after Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta appealed against panic and unnecessary rush to get the dollar. he, however, described the depreciation of the cedi as ‘perplexing.’

  • Inflation hikes: ‘This is not election year, treat Ghanaians as citizens’ – Gabby to NPP members

A member of the governing NPP named Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko has counseled party members to simply treat Ghanaians as voters during election years and to refrain from using inflation statistics as a tool for equalization politics.

He believes that this is not the appropriate time for NPP members to engage in equalization politics with NDC opponents.

The Ghanaian people, he claimed, should be treated more like citizens at this time because of the economy’s high rates of inflation, high interest rates, and the weakening cedi.

He maintains that currently the world is experiencing an unprecedented economic crisis and Ghana is suffering badly from the situation because it is recovering from the COVID-19 pandemic.

“NPP shouldn’t play the politics of equalization with the NDC on inflation, interest rates & cedi depreciation.

“The world is facing an economic crisis like never before in peace time. Ghana has been hit very hard because our economic recovery was being delicately managed pre-COVID,” Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko tweeted.

“This is not election year, so don’t treat Ghanaians like voters but citizens. Politics of comparisons works when elections are before us.

“Right now people just care about how to make ends meet. Use your energy in showing what is being done to bring relief,” he warned.

Ghana’s inflation rate has increased to 37.2 percent in September 2022. The Ghana Cedi, is struggling.

The Cedi has been reported by Bloomberg to be the world’s worst-performing currency this year as investors continued to squeeze foreign capital into the west African country before a deal with the International Monetary Fund.

The currency of the world’s second-biggest cocoa producer depreciated as much as 3.3% Monday, before paring the loss to 11.2750 per dollar at 3:30 p.m. in the capital Accra. That took its losses this year to more than 45%, the most among 148 currencies tracked by Bloomberg.

  • ‘The struggle is real’ – Gabby reacts to 37.2% inflation figure

A representative of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko, has commented on Ghanaians’ experiences as a result of the country’s soaring inflation.

He claims that if inflation does not slow down, it will soon be racing alone as earnings are finding it difficult to even perceive inflation’s far-off shadow.

The challenge is real, he lamented.

The inflation rate for September currently stands at 37.2%, which is the highest in the past ten years.
Compared to the 33.9% reported in August 2022, this is.

“If this inflation does not stop galloping, soon it will be racing alone on its own because incomes are struggling to even see the back of inflation’s distant shadow, never mind the many unemployed with no income. The struggle is real …”, Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko wrote on his Facebook timeline.

Ghana is currently experiencing fiscal difficulties and a host of other economic challenges.

According to the Ghana Statistical Service, five groups recorded inflation rates higher than the national average in September.

They were Housing, Water, Electricity, Gas and Other fuels (68.8%); Furnishings, Household Equipment and Routine Household Maintenance (51.1%); Transport (48.6%); Personal Care, Social Protection and Miscellaneous Goods and Services (42.6%) as well as Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages (37.8%).

The implementation of the utility tariff in September 2022 also influenced the surge in inflation in Housing, Water, Electricity and other fuels group.

This situation has therefore compelled citizens to revive their calls for the government to address the situation.

  • ‘History-maker’ Kwasi Kwarteng will rise again because he can – Gabby

Leading member of the New Patriotic Party, Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko, has expressed optimism that Kwasi Kwarteng, the dismissed UK Chancellor of the Exchequer will rise again.

The British-born politician of Ghanaian parentage was on Friday, October 14, relieved from his post by the British Prime Minister, Liz Truss.

The BBC confirmed the news and stated that the decision was taken following fallouts from his mini-budget which sparked financial turmoil in the markets and caused a revolt among Conservative MPs in the UK.

Reacting to the news, Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko tweeted: “He made history as UK’s first black finance minister. Little did we know that he was also to make history as the shortest on the job. Iain Macleod who lasted 30 days died on the job as chancellor of the Exchequer on 20 June 1970. Kwasi Kwarteng will rise again because he is able.”

Gabby is a known admirer of Kwarteng, having projected months back that the latter will one day rise to become the Prime Minister of the UK.

Kwarteng’s era as Chancellor of the Exchequer lasted six weeks.

His appointment came at a time the country was facing a high cost of living, and public sector layoffs, among others.

Kwasi Kwarteng after his appointment became the first black person to hold the position.

He has since accepted the dismissal in a letter posted on Twitter. “You have asked me to stand aside as your Chancellor. I have accepted,” the first line of his letter to PM Truss read.

    Background

Kwasi Kwarteng, 47, took over as head of the British Treasury in September 2022, after new UK Prime Minister, Liz Truss, took over; with the responsibility of trying to pull the UK out of a serious cost-of-living crisis without plunging the public finances into the abyss.

He took over from Nadhim Zahawi, an Iraqi-born Kurd, who himself succeeded Rishi Sunak, of Indian origin, and Sajid Javid, with Pakistani roots, embodying a more inclusive face of the Conservative party.

His sack makes him the second shortest-serving UK chancellor on record.

The shortest serving chancellor, Iain Macleod, according to the BBC, died of a heart attack 30 days after taking the job in 1970.

Since 2019, the UK has had four chancellors, including Nadhim Zahawi who served the third shortest tenure with 63 days during a short-lived reshuffle under Boris Johnson, and Sajid Javid who served 204 days – the fourth shortest tenure on record.

  • ‘The politics of scapegoatism’ – Gabby reacts to Kwasi Kwarteng’s sacking

Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko, a prominent member of the New Patriotic Party, has stated what may be characterized as his displeasure over Kwasi Kwarteng’s dismissal as the UK finance minister.

On Friday, October 14, British Prime Minister Liz Truss removed Kwasi Kwarteng, a Ghanaian-born British finance minister, from his position.

The decision was made as a result of the mini-consequences, budget’s which led to market volatility and a revolt among UK Conservative MPs, according to the BBC, which confirmed the news.

Reacting to the news, Gabby Otchere-Darko took to his Twitter and wrote; ‘The politics of scapegoatism’ to suggest that Kwasi Kwarteng despite being in office for only six weeks suffered the ill consequences of being a political scapegoat.

Kwasi Kwarteng was recently appointed to serve as Chancellor of the Exchequer, United Kingdom where he served for six weeks.

His appointment came at a crucial time when the country is facing a high cost of living, and public sector layoffs, among others.

Kwasi Kwarteng after his appointment became the first black person to hold the position.

British Prime Minister to announce tax cuts:

Meanwhile, it is expected that Prime Minister, Truss will hold a news conference in due course, as speculation builds that the government could reverse more of the tax cuts announced in its mini-budget.

Earlier, a No 10 Downing source told the BBC that Truss thought the chancellor was “doing an excellent job”

The PM faces growing calls from within her party to rethink her economic plans, with one Tory MP telling the BBC: “It’s checkmate, we’re screwed”, the BBC further reported.

  • What Gabby said about the cedi’s depreciation in 2015

One of the main factors contributing to today’s worsening economic conditions in Ghana is the depreciation of the Ghanaian cedi.

On October 10, 2022, several forex bureaus in the nation are selling the currency at a rate of 11 to 1.

The cedi reached a record high of GHS/USD 4.45 this week, according to a tweet from Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko, a prominent member of the New Patriotic party, in June 2015.

While some social media users expressed disbelief over how the local currency has changed dramatically since 2015, others criticized the NPP government for running a “failed economy.”

According to the latest Bloomberg and World Bank report, the Ghana Cedi ranks as the worst-performing currency in Africa.

The World Bank report noted that: “The worst performing currencies in the region since the beginning of the year include those of Ghana (with a depreciation of 60 percent), South Sudan (50.8 percent), Sudan (28.6 percent), Malawi (25.4 percent), and CFA Franc (13.3 percent).”

  • Gabby meets Jesus, Partey, others at Emirates Stadium after Spurs game

Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko was at the Emirates Stadium, in London, to watch Arsenal play against Tottenham Hotspurs on October 1 in the North London derby.

The game ended 3 – 1 in favour of the Gunners with Ghana international Thomas Teye Partey grabbing the first goal through a sublime curler from outside the box.

Gabby, a known Arsenal fan, has exclusive access to the backroom at the Emirates after the game and shared photos of himself and Arsenal players at the facility.

It is believed that his close relationship with Partey may have been what gave him the access to interact with some of the players.

In photo shared on his Twitter handle, Gabby is seen chatting with or posing for photos with Partey, Gabriel Jesus (who was also on the scoresheet on the day) as well as Emmanuel Saliba.

He captioned one set of the photos: “Feels like a good weekend. Spurs losing, Liverpool drawing. Arsenal topping, Emirates buzzing!”

He also took photograph with Zinchenko, Granit Xhaka, another goal scorer on the day, as well as with Gabriel Martinez.

“Basking in the 3-1 glory against Spurs. We rule North London and we are on top of the EPL!” he captioned another set of photos.

  • ‘I don’t sit far away behind my PC typing doom’ – Gabby replies Prof. Hanke

Professor of Applied Economics at Johns Hopkins University in the United States has gotten a response from Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko, a prominent NPP member.

Prof. Steve Hanke had tweeted that Gabby must be from another planet if she thought the government and Finance Ministry merited plaudits for managing the economy despite the current financial crisis.

Gabby’s reaction focused on three distinct factors: his location, his opinions on the Ghanaian economy and inhabitants’ living situations, as well as how he addresses the current problems.

In response to the ‘living on another planet’ jibe by Hanke, Gabby said in a tweet quoting Hanke’s critique: “I live on the part of this planet called Ghana.”

On the economy, he stated: “I see, I feel how tough things are, especially for the average Ghanaian. I see how tough it is for Govt and the constant struggle to keep bills paid, kids in school, our lights on etc.

“I don’t sit far away behind my PC typing doom,” his post concluded.

In Prof. Steve Hanke’s critique of Gabby’s views, he posted a GhanaWeb story of Gabby’s government deserves praise claims on Twitter and captioned it thus: “Leading member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP)  says Pres. Akufo-Addo deserves praise for his handling of the economy. SPOILER ALERT: Otchere-Darko must be on another planet.”

He added his usual inflation measurement which he said stood at 81%/y, a figure that is over 100% the official inflation percentage pegged at 33.9%.

The Ghana Statistical Service, GSS, recently announced that consumer inflation for August 2022 hit 33.9% from 31.7% in July.

This is the highest rate that has been recorded in 21 years. According to the GSS, food and transportation were the main drivers of inflation.

Professor Hanke who has taken a keen interest on economic issues of Ghana in a separate tweet said Ghana’s economy was tanking – an expression which means the economy is down and there are fears of a recession.

He has in the past blamed the Akufo-Addo-led administration for putting the economy in a dire situation.

“Ghana is in 8th place in this week’s inflation table. On Sep 8, I measured Ghana’s #inflation at a stunning 81%/yr–over 2x the official inflation rate of 34%/yr. #Ghana’s economy is TANKING. To rein in inflation, GHA must install a currency board,” he tweeted on September 19.

“Today, I measure #Ghana’s inflation at 81%/yr. As a result, Ghanaians don’t know the price of anything anymore. When Ghanaians see their grocery bills soar, they can thank Pres. Akufo-Addo,” Prof Hanke added.

  • Gabby entices US investors

Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko, chair of the advisory board of the Commonwealth Enterprise and Investment Council (CWEIC), has urged US investors to act promptly and participate in the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

“When you have a continent with 1.3 trillion people, that is constructing a single market, if you don’t wake up to it, it will be too late, and you can’t blame China when it happens,” Otchere-Darko added.
Therefore, I want to tell Americans that Africa offers potential.

According to him, a customs union will be put in place as part of the AfCFTA, drastically reducing imports.

“We are building a new Africa and that new Africa is a single market, Africa. Potentially the largest single market in the World. We are going to have a customs union, some may think that it’s not possible but it’s possible. In fact, the first customs union in the world happened in Africa.”

    The time is now

Addressing an insightful trade and round table discussion on US-Ghana investment opportunities, he said the time to invest in Ghana is now until the free trade area minimizes the level of import from America when full, trade protocols set in.

“It was a South African customs union that was in 1910. So we are going to have a customs union and once we do that it means that we are not going to rely so much on import because the rules of origin is set in. And there will be higher duties for things coming in but within a single market there will be no charges.”

He advised US investors not to lack behind their Chinese counterparts but to take several opportunities in the industry which he said remains a major source of transformation in Ghana.

“So I think what the Chinese are recognising [and I am just using Ghana as an example] is that they are setting industries here [in Ghana]. And perhaps before America wakes up, the single market would have been in full motion and you would have Chinese industries not just depending on imports into Africa but actually setting up in Africa and taking advantage of the single market.”

  • YEARS AGO: Government borrowing is not careless; external debt stock is $20.671 billion, according to Gabby

On September 16, 2019, Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko, a prominent member of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), remarked that the administration was not acting carelessly.

He made his statement after the nation’s total debt stock at the time reached $20.671 billion.

    Ghana’s external debt stock: $18.370 billion in 2014; $20.633 billion in 2015; $21.372 billion in 2016; $21.369 billion in 2017; and $20.671 billion in 2018.
    anticipated advancement in 2019.
It indicates that NPP isn’t memorizing borrowing, according to a Facebook post by Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko.

According to 2018 records, Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko, a prominent member of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Ghana’s external debt stock is $20.671 billion.

He claims that data on Ghana’s debt stock, which spans the years 2014 to 2018, demonstrates that the Akufo-Addo administration isn’t borrowing carelessly.

    He wrote on Facebook: “Ghana’s external debt stock: 2014: $18.370 billion; 2015: $20.633 billion; 2016: $21.372 billion; 2017: $21.369 billion; 2018: $20.671 billion.
    anticipated advancement in 2019.
It indicates that NPP is not borrowing automatically.

Recall that the Minority in Parliament lambasted the Akufo-Addo-led government for engaging in excessive borrowing, which they claimed had increased the national debt.

According to them, the latest report of the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) of the Bank of Ghana places the current national debt at almost GH200 billion as at the end of the first quarter of 2019.

Mr Cassiel Ato Forson, Ranking Member on Finance, speaking at a press conference stated that, despite this insatiable appetite for borrowing, President Akufo-Addo’s government does not have any significant capital investments to show unlike his predecessor, former President John Mahama, who invested borrowed funds in major capital projects across all sectors of the economy, from education, health, housing, roads, energy, communications, aviation and transport, among others.

Mr Forson also said the GH200 billion national debt represents an increase of about GH80 billion in the last two and half years alone, raising the debt to GDP ratio from 56 per cent in 2016 to almost 58 percent.

“We drew attention to the change since 2016 for three reasons related to the Mahama era. First, there was the promise not to borrow. Second, the NPP has benefited from a 25 per cent bonus or increase in GDP, due to the rebasing exercise. Third, the NPP inherited two additional oil fields (Sankofa and TEN) that has almost tripled output and at an average 60 per cent price increase” he added.

According to Mr Forson at the current exchange rate levels, borrowing alone has given President Akufo-Addo government a staggering $16 billion over the period, which excludes GH5.7 billion borrowed under the ESLA Bonds last year.

Mr Forson also noted that the current NPP administration has benefited more in terms of oil revenues received than any other government.

He said the total oil revenues received between 2017 and 2018 and those expected to be received in 2019 currently stands at GH 12, 328, 703, 024.81.

He said President Akufo-Addo’s government has had more money at their disposal than all other governments and should have done far more than is being done presently.

Mr. Forson added that the present borrowing spree poses a threat to the fiscal space made available by the economy’s rebasing, which began in 2016 and was completed in September 2018.

He claims it is clear the President sees the opportunity presented by the rebasing as a chance to indulge in reckless borrowing for the purpose of financing consumption-related expenses.

Despite all the resources at his disposal, he claimed, President Akufo-Addo has not been able to keep the majority of the promises he made to the electorate during his campaign.

  • E-Levy not bad, Ghanaians simply don’t want to pay taxes – Gabby

A leading member of the governing New Patriotic Party, Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko, has stated that the Electronic Transfer Levy (E-Levy) is not a bad tax measure.

In a series of posts on his social media handle on Monday June 27, the lawyer lamented that the E-Levy since its passage in May this year has failed to live up to government’s expectation, in terms of delivering needed revenue.

According to him, the tax measure has only managed to deliver on 10% of the estimated revenue target.

“After 5 months of stalemate and bashing, the e-levy, after implementation, is delivering only 10% of estimated revenues; our revenues remain very low as compared to the rest of the world; debt levels dangerously high, cedi, like most currencies, struggling against the US dollar,” Gabby tweeted.

While hinting at an IMF bailout programme option available to government, Gabby was quick to add that “I am not for an IMF program that throws peanuts at us but imposes conditions that will end up hurting the poor, jobs and businesses more.”

In a separate tweet however, the co-founder of Danquah Institute stated that despite the E-Levy not delivering on expected revenue, it does not make it a bad tax but rather Ghanaians are responsible since they do not want to pay taxes.

“If the e-levy is so far not bringing in the estimated revenues, it does not mean it is a bad tax. It means Ghanaians simply do not want to pay taxes,” Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko tweeted.

The E-Levy was passed and signed into law by President Akufo-Addo in March despite fierce opposition from a cross-section of Ghanaians, the Minority in Parliament, civil society organizations, and various stakeholders.

The government believes the tax measure is necessary to close revenue gaps and help address the nation’s revenue mobilization and economic management, even though many have criticized it as regressive and one that would reverse progress made toward a cashless economy.

After a five-month impasse in Parliament, it was passed in late March 2022. But the levy’s projected revenue for the 2022 fiscal year had to be revised from GH¢6.9 billion to GH¢4.9 billion.

  • Akufo-Addo came with a vision to industrialise Ghana – Gabby

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is gradually fulfilling his vision of industrialising Ghana, a leading member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko, has said.

Gabby said already Nissan, VW, SinoTruk, Peugeot, Suzuki, and Toyota are assembling in the country.

“He came in with a vision to industrialise Ghana. By 2030, AfCFTA will be in full swing. Already, Nissan, VW, SinoTruk, Peugeot, Suzuki, and Toyota are assembling here. KIA, Hyundai, and Renault are to start production this year. Ghana is on course to produce for an integrating Africa,” the former Executive Director of the Danquah Institute tweeted on Thursday, March 31.

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo will later today, Thursday, March 31 commission a Nissan Assembly Plant in Ghana.

The ceremony will take place in the Tema Industrial Area.

Delivering the 2022 state of the nation address in Parliament on Wednesday, March 30, Mr. Akufo-Addo said “Mr. Speaker, quite a number of global vehicle manufacturing companies have set up assembly plants here in our country, and started producing vehicles for our market and for the West African market. The well-defined Ghana Automotive Development Policy we outdoored in August 2019 has facilitated this welcome development.

“Since June 2021, Toyota and Suzuki brands of vehicles are being produced here, commencing with the production of Hilux Pickup and Swift models. VW and Sinotruck, which commenced commercial operations in 2020, have continued to assemble their brands of vehicles and are enjoying significant local patronage.

“In addition, a new state-of-the-art assembly plant with the capacity to assemble 5,000 new vehicles per annum has been established by Nissan in Tema, which is currently producing Nissan and Peugeot brands of vehicles for the Ghanaian and West African markets. I will have the pleasure to commission this new plant in Tema tomorrow. Three other vehicle manufacturers, namely KIA, Hyundai, and Renault are also expected to commence commercial production this year.

“Our national iconic automobile brand, the Kantanka brand produced by Kantanka Automobile Company Ltd., also stepped-up production of its made-in-Ghana vehicles which include Nkunimdie SUV, Omama Pickup, Onantefo 4×4 Pickup, Otumfuo SUV, and K71 Small SUV models.

“Now that the Minister for Finance has announced an embargo on the importation of 4×4 vehicles for official use, I hope the local assembly plants will take full advantage of the opportunity especially since the government is continuing with its policy of giving first priority to locally assembled vehicles in respect of all publicly financed procurement of vehicles.”

Otchere-Darko in a tweet indicated that, even though he is a proud Ghanaian, he will defend the right of minorities everywhere because he has a sense of justice to disagree with the majority.

The anti-gay Bill, since its introduction last July by eight Members of Parliament (MPs) from both sides, has generated numerous comments and reactions from both proponents and opponents, including legal luminaries and academics.

However, both sides of the House have indicated their readiness to outlaw the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer and Intersex (LGBTQI) practices in the country based on its culture, morality and values.

The Speaker of the House, Alban Bagbin, while sticking to the position of outlawing the practice, has, however, indicated that the House would not engage in filibustering the proposed piece of legislation.

He further indicated that the House would conduct an open hearing into the Bill and a vote on the Bill would be done publicly.

  • She stood up to bullies – Gabby backs gunshot-firing Hawa Koomson

An influential member of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) and cousin of President Akufo-Addo, Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko has justified the firing of gunshots at a registration centre in the Awutu Senya East constituency.

He explained that he is unable to criticise a woman who fired gunshots not with the intent to cause harm but in self-defense given his experience with election-related violence and the fact that she has a stake in the registration process as the sitting Member of Parliament (MP) and the parliamentary candidate of Awutu Senya East Constituency where the registration centre is located.

“In this male-dominated world of politics, I struggle to find serious fault against a woman MP, who decides to stand up to alleged bullies and she does by not pointing her gun at them, but firing in the air”.

“It is easy for you and I to feel she overreacted. She probably did. I will not doubt that. She probably panicked. Many of us have a licensed gun which we carry in our glove compartment and we pray to never feel the need to use it”.

“I am very uncomfortable joining the bandwagon to go after a woman who used a weapon, not to harm any person, but to scare away people he felt could harm her and others. I am looking at the level of venom in the attacks she is receiving. I wonder if there is a subtle misogynism at play here. This is not to say I endorse any threat of violence whether in self-defense or not by or against man or woman”.

“My problem is that when it comes to the affairs of the few women in our frontline politics my instinct is to side with them until otherwise convinced. So far, I am still trusting my instinct,” he wrote on Facebook sighted by MyNewsGh.com.

Mavis Hawa Koomson has come under intense criticism, with many calling on the President to relieve her of her ministerial position, for firing gunshots at a voter registration centre in Kasoa in the Central Region.

Back several others have backed her, saying that once she acted in self-defense, there should be no issue.

    Full post of Gabby below:

It was the 2008 rerun of the presidential race. As head of a governance think tank, I applied for a domestic observer status, and opted to travel around trouble hotspots. I recall a trip to a polling station not far from where the MP fired a warning shot this week. Not far at all.

I was lucky enough to have a police escort by the name George Nkum (now Chief Inspector) with me. It was interesting how he reacted the moment our lives looked threatened.

As we approached the polling station, we were told that some “bad things” were happening there. A group of angry looking men, wielding all manner of instruments, started rushing towards me.

I stood there, weighing my options; turned, assuredly, to my police escort, who had a loaded rifle. He then, to my surprise, started to hurry back to our vehicle, beckoning to me to follow. I looked at him, shook my head, and turned away from the polling area, walking, begrudgingly obligingly, to the safety of my vehicle, in which the driver was peacefully dozing away. George turned back, urging me to run as the angry mob quickened their pace. I refused to run. Too cool for my own good? I kept walking. He screamed that I run. I ignored. I was torn between my own safety and the safety of the ballot box. I chose my safety but walked on.

I did not run, not because I wanted to be a hero. No. I had measured the distance from my vehicle and knew the mob would not catch up with me. So I was not to give them that extra pleasure.

Later on in the Pajero Mistubushi, as we drove safely away, I asked the police man, “George, you had a gun. Why did you run?” He said, “Massa, safety first!”

I was not sure whether to agree or disagree. Whose safety, I fell short of asking.

But, then I wondered… why should our elections be this way? 12 years later, not far from the same spot, why should a woman candidate, an MP, a Minister, feel so threatened to feel the need to fire a warning shot into the open air? Three elections on, have we made progress?

Ordinarily, I would have condemned the act. But, I remember when I felt threatened, my first instinct was not to run but to turn to the man licensed to carry a gun for protection. Or was it so that he could put the fear of the gun into the hoodlums? Perhaps, I could afford to walk away because I was not the candidate whose electoral destiny was directly at stake. I was a mere “observer.”

In this male-dominated world of politics, I struggle to find serious fault against a woman MP, who decides to stand up to alleged bullies and she does by not pointing her gun at them, but firing in the air.

It is easy for you and I to feel she overreacted. She probably did. I will not doubt that.

She probably panicked. Many of us have a licensed gun which we carry in our glove compartment and we pray to never feel the need to use it. She did.

I am very uncomfortable joining the bandwagon to go after a woman who used a weapon, not to harm any person, but to scare away people he felt could harm her and others.

I am looking at the level of venom in the attacks she is receiving. I wonder if there is a subtle misogynism at play here. This is not to say I endorse any threat of violence whether in self-defence or not by or against man or woman.

  • Mahama will implement youth in grass cutting, women in stone picking if re-elected Gabby

Staunch member of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko has claimed that former President John Mahama will soon implement some policies he had intended to implement but lost power to the NPP in 2016.

The said policies, he said, include youth in grass cutting and women in stone picking.

Taking a dig at the former President and his government, Mr Asare Otchere-Darko suggested that an old video in which Rashid Pelpuo, then Minister of State in-charge Public Private Partnerships, is heard saying that employed teachers and nurses could resort to picking and selling stones as a form of employment, gives a sneak peek into the 2020 manifesto of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).

“A little peak inside the 2020 NDC manifesto and some of the mistakes that JM has learnt and wishes to correct if elected, like implementing policies his Govt suggested but never had the chance to implement. Some of these policies Ghanaians should look forward to include: Youth in Grass Cutting; Women in Stone Picking. Three trips of stones a day from the bush solves all your unemployment problems,” he reacted to the video of the former Minister.

For him, going back for Mahama is going back for trouble.

Dr Rashid Pelpuo, then Minister in the erstwhile government of John Mahama suggested unemployed nurses and teachers who were demanding posting at the time and had been denied due to a ban on government employment could engage in stone picking or cutting grass for sale to prospective buyers.

At the time, his suggestions angered many unemployed nurses and teachers who unanimously condemned his suggestion.

  • Tough to swallow! – Gabby Otchere-Darko mourns Sir John

Ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) strongman, Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko, is grieving for Ghana Forestry Commission boss, Kwadwo Owusu Afiriyie.

According to him, the death of the former NPP General Secretary, is tough to swallow.

Sir John, as he was affectionately called, passed away Wednesday, July 1, 2020, at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra.

Ghana Guardian gathered that, the Ghanaian lawyer-cum-politician, has been unwell in recent times and was placed on a ventilator at the country’s premier health-care facility, where he battled it out.

This was after he tested positive for the novel coronavirus.

Reacting to the sad news, however, the NPP stalwart, Mr. Otchere-Darko said Sir John’s death is ‘truly shattering’ and ‘tough to swallow’ as according to him, he had called to wish him speedy recovery few hours before the incident.

“Only this afternoon I called to wish him speedy recovery… This is truly shattering! Tough to swallow… Sleep easy, Sir John.”, Gabby mourned on Facebook.

  • John Mahama’s running mate allegedly says no to him

Mahama’s Running Mate Nominee Says No to Mahama and the NDC

The leader of the National Democratic Congress John Dramani Mahama is alleged struggling to have a running mate who will deputise as his Vice President if voted to power come December 7.

John Dramani Mahama who served as President of Ghana from 24 July 2012 to 7 January 2017 following the death of his former boss and President Atta Mills is struggling to have a Running Mate of his choice according to Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko a flamboyant NPP man and a Senior Partner of Africa Legal Associates according to his Facebook profile.

Gabby last night threw in a delicate gossip which states how the former President John Mahama is struggling to have a Running Mate of his own choosing because the one he wanted has turned down the offer and not only did he turned it down indirectly but did it directly when the former president who is the flag bearer for the opposition party NDC paid the said individual a curtsey call. “It must be pretty frustrating when your choice of running mate turns you flat down… especially after you have approached him personally with your offer. Uneasy lies the head that wears a thorny crown.” Gabby’s post entails.

Though it hasn’t been confirmed as truth but a man of Gabby’s calibre will never risk telling a fake gossip.

John Mahama who served as Vice President of Ghana from January 2009 to July 2012, and took office as President on 24 July 2012 following the death of his predecessor, John Atta Mills is running for power for his second term as President. The Ghanaian constitution makes it possible for him run for a second term and if he succeeds will become the longest serving elected President of Ghana following their path of democracy starting 1992.

Gabby’s Facebook friends then added fuel to the fire when their comments suggested it was indeed the former President the post was talking about.
