  • Your bonds are potentially worthless if you don’t subscribe to debt exchange programme – Gabby Otchere-Darko

Your bonds are potentially worthless if you don’t subscribe to debt exchange programme – Gabby Otchere-Darko

Private legal practitioner, Gabby Otchere-Darko, has indicated that the refusal by individual bondholders to accept government’s debt exchange programme will worsen the country’s economic crisis.

According to the NPP stalwart, the widespread rejection by the bondholders will not augur well for the country, hence the need for them to soften their stance.

In a series of tweets on Sunday evening, he explained that even though the terms of the debt exchange programme will affect individual bondholders, it is a necessary step which must be taken to salvage the economy.

He said if the bondholders fail to cooperate with government, their bonds may be affected in the future in addition to a further deterioration of the economy.

“Ghana is in a very difficult place. What we are seeing with the mobilisation of agitation on individual bondholders poses a real and serious risk worse than what we witnessed when opposition to E-Levy succeeded in derailing an already shaky macroeconomic situation from 2021”, portions of his tweets read.

“The debt exchange programme is voluntary for individual bondholders but a very necessary evil for our economy.

Its success is critical to restoring macroeconomic stability, securing an IMF prog. It hits those of us holding bonds very hard. A straight no to it is no solution!”, Mr Otchere-Darko stressed.

“If the no-compromise opposition to it wins, what then has been achieved? It may lead to national debt default.

So what then happens to the value of your bonds after! Potentially worthless. If participation is low, we jeopardize resolving the economic crisis and hardships”, he wrote.

Your bonds are potentially worthless if you don't subscribe to debt exchange programme - Gabby Otchere-Darko

In concluding his comments on the matter, he said, “I’m sorry but we have to face the hard/painful truths. We ain’t sitting pretty.

Our focus must be on how the burden to individual bondholders may be possibly eased; but not to take the hardline position of simply saying no to particpation. It will come back to hit us harder!”.

While noting the possible dangers if the programme does not go through, he called on individual bondholders to rally behind government to help restore the economy.

The remarks by the founder of the Danquah Institute comes in the wake of growing public agitations from individual bondholders about government’s proposed domestic debt exchange programme.

In a bid to rescue the economy and secure a deal with the International Monetary Fund (IMF), government has proposed that all bondholders will not receive any interests on their bonds for the 2023 financial year.

The payment of dividends, according to government is likley to begin next year, 2024 at a discounted rate of 5%.

In relation to this, bondholders who may want to transfer or even forfeit their bonds will not even be able to get the full principal they initially invested as bonds.

This proposal, since its announcement has been rejected by many bondholders who have subsequently expressed frustration about the development.

In their view, if the proposal is implemented, they will suffer a great deal of loss, with many of them stating that their investments may even become unprofitable.

Some of the aggrieved bondholders, who recently interacted with JoyNews have thrown their hands in despair, with others contemplating suicide.

The affected investors say with government’s intended management of their bonds, they may not even be able to meet their expenses such as rent, feeding and the payment of fees for their wards.

They have therefore called on government and other relevant stakeholders to intervene in the matter.

In this regard, policy analyst, Senyo Hosi, who is part of the crusade is currently mobilising all affected bondholders to collectively resist the move by government.

Speaking on JoyNews‘ PM Express last week, he stated that the proposal by government is ‘insensitive’ and must be outrightly resisted.

Meanwhile, government insists the debt exchange programme is the way to go in rescuing the economy.

  • ‘Beware of Greeks bearing gifts’ – Dafeamekpor reacts to Gabby Otchere-Darko’s plea to NDC MPs

The Member of Parliament (MP) for South Dayi, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, has urged his colleague National Democratic Congress (NDC) MPs not to listen to the plea of New Patriotic Party (NPP) stalwart Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko on the 2023 Budget.

Gabby Otchere-Darko asked MPs from the minority caucus to join the 2023 budget reading on Thursday, November 24, 2022.

According to him, the 2023 budget is important in Ghana’s negotiations with the International Monetary Fund as well as in restoring investor confidence in the country.

“Thursday’s 2023 budget is crucial. It can’t suffer a fate similar to the 2022 budget and its revenue measures. It could completely derail negotiations with the Fund if not passed. Critical to this are its revenue generation measures. We plead the NDC joins NPP in this for Ghana,” a tweet the NPP stalwart shared on November 23 read.

But Dafeamekpor, while reacting to Gabby’s tweet, said that he (Gabby) cannot be trusted and his plea is not sincere.

The MP, in a tweet, added that the minority caucus MPs do not need the advice of the NPP’s leading member.

“Beware of the Greeks bearing a Gift Horse in the face. This call by Otchere Darko is a typical Trojan Horse.

“Gabby, be reminded that the NDC and its powerful Minority Caucus of which, I’m a proud Member, won’t take advise from Ofori Atta’s lawyer on Social Media. Advise the IMF,” parts of the tweet read.

  • Censure Motion: Ofori-Atta is not minority’s target; they want to impeach Akufo-Addo – Kabila

The censure motion brought by the Parliamentary Minority against the Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, according to James Kwabena Bomfeh, managing editor of the National Forum newspaper, is a ruse to bring down President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and his administration.

The Finance Minister and his attorney, Gabby Otchere-Darko, went before a parliamentary committee on Tuesday, November 15, 2022, to discuss the vote of censure against the Finance Minister.

Cassiel Ato Forson, a former deputy finance minister and current representative for the Ajumako-Enyan-Esiam constituency, and Minority Leader Haruna Iddrisu were offered as witnesses by the minority to present the case for Mr. Ken Ofori-dismissal. Atta’s

They raised issues bordering on corruption and conflict of interest to support their arguments.

Speaking at the committee sitting, Gabby Otchere-Darko, a private legal practitioner and a leading member of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) said such a probe is the mandate of the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ).

“Our issue is that, if you go to Article 284 of the Constitution, it says that, a public officer shall not put himself in a position where his personal interest conflicts or is likely to conflict with the function of his office.”

“If you combine that with Article 287 which says an allegation which contravenes or not complied with this chapter shall be made to CHRAJ. The relevant part is that, when a public officer is to face a charge or allegation or any ground of conflict of interest, it is CHRAJ that the constitution says must deal with it,” he added.

But Haruna Iddrisu, in defence, stated that, “this Committee is not only to hear [the allegations], it also has the power to do a further inquiry into all government borrowing; who got what, when and how? All the domestic bonds we have done, for instance, the Euro Bond, who got what? We must be interested in whether our inquiry, engendered a conflict of interest or not”.

To James Kwabena Bomfeh, also called ‘Kabila’, the Minority’s aim for the censure motion is not to evict the Finance Minister but rather to embarass the President and have cause to impeach him.

Making his submissions on Peace FM’s ‘Kokrokoo’ programme, he said; “When I saw the evidence that the Minority had gathered for the censure, I realized the Minister is not their target. The President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is their target . . . Any problem you have with any budget is an attack on the President and his cabinet. When you read what they sent, they said he has presented a budget that’s failed to solve the economic problems and challenges. That is the point; so at the hub of this censure is the Minority targeting to bring President Akufo-Addo and his entire Cabinet down.”

He rebuked the Minority saying, “our consistent conduct of duplicity in politics in Ghana will collapse this country. It will kill and destroy this nation and crumble on all of us. If it’s the President you want to impeach, go ahead and do so”.

Kabila warned against the conduct of the Minority, explaining that any accusations that have to do with conflict of interest, embezzlement, corruption and the likes against a Minister is to be referred to CHRAJ or the court, hence they using the ad-hoc Committee to deal with such issues is somehow a constitutional breach.

“It is to cause an embarrassment to the government and the President and his Ministers,” he further scolded about the Minority’s censure motion.

  • Ofori-Atta must be held responsible for cost of living crisis – Haruna Iddrisu

Minority Leader, Haruna Iddrisu says Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta must be blamed for the current high cost of living in the country.

Prices of goods and services have been on the rise recently while transportation fares have also increased more than four times due to the increase in fuel prices.

The country’s inflation rate currently stands at 40.4%, a level not witnessed ever in the country.

According to Mr. Iddrisu the government, amidst all these developments, has failed to take measures to abate the current hardship. Thus, the Finance Minister should be held responsible.

The Tamale South MP said this when he appeared as a witness before the 8-member Adhoc Committee hearing the censure motion against the Finance Minister on Tuesday.

“There is a cost of living crisis in Ghana, exacerbated by uncontrolled inflation and we think that the Honourable Minister for Finance must be held responsible for that. We are saying that someone must accept responsibility.

“Chairman, when we say the cost of living and hardship, we are also concerned about the investments of persons associated with pensions and even the financial viability of Ghana’s banking sector and the attempt to deal with it and we think that Ken Ofori-Atta must be held responsible for that,” he noted.

Meanwhile, the Legal representative for Ken Ofori-Atta, Gabby Otchere-Darko has demanded evidence to back the Minority’s allegations against the Minister.

The lawyer wants the Minority legislators to provide particulars to support their specific claims.

This, he says, will enable his client better assess the allegations based on which his removal is being pushed for.

For Mr Otchere-Darko, if this is not done, it will give room to the petitioners ambushing the embattled Minister with questions that may be outside the scope of the probe.

“If we are not careful, there will be surprises at every turn of the proceedings,” he added.

  • ‘Money does not like noise’ – Prof. Baah Boateng reacts to Gabby Otchere-Darko’s tweet

Head of the Economics Department at the University of Ghana, Professor William Baah Boateng, has commented on reports that the Central Bank will soon receive around $700 million to address the cedi depreciation.

The cousin of President Nana Addo, Gabby Otchere-Darko, was cited in a piece by The Chronicle newspaper dated October 24, 2022, as having stated in a tweet last Friday that “$790 million is expected to hit the Bank of Ghana account and that should help improve the current turmoil in the forex market.”

He implied that this money will support Ghana’s currency.

But to Professor William Baah Boateng, Gabby Otchere-Darko need not to have made such public announcement because he will create a problem for the Governor of the Bank of Ghana in the event that the money doesn’t arrive.

He emphasized; “Money does not like noise. When it happens this way, you put pressure on the Governor because if the money doesn’t hit the Governor’s account today or tomorrow and the cedi depreciates, everybody will blame the Governor.”

“Yes [central bank] they can also have their weaknesses here and there but if I have to apportion blame, I don’t think that they will have 10 percent . . . the key issue actually comes from the fiscal side because if fiscal money is not backed by production, there is no way that it won’t have an effect on your economy.”

“You don’t need to annouce it…It doesn’t help. I will repeat, money does not like noise!”, he further stressed.

  • Gabby Otchere-Darko fights TV3 over ‘worthless Cedi’ tag

Gabby Otchere-Darko is the founder of the Danquah Institute and a member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Gabby Otchere-Darko, a prominent figure in the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), has criticized Accra-based TV3 for calling the local currency “worthless.”

Even though the Cedi is currently in decline, in his opinion, the TV station’s label is not appropriate.

In a Facebook post on Friday, Otchere-Darko said that the challenges of the Cedi do not call for media speculations which only worsen the situation.

Noting his reservations, ‘Gabby’, as he is popularly called expressed hope in the Cedi which has been losing its forex value steeply in recent times.

“Even as reputable analysts, such as JP Morgan, are today describing the cedi in a mixed tone as at least ‘15% undervalued’ and its net risk as “positive”, but our forex market “distorted”, a big Ghanaian media house is busily and loudly describing the cedi as ‘worthless’.

“Journalists can report and influence. But where the default mode is to influence negatively, such media houses run the risk of becoming partners in speculation”, he protested.

Mr Otchere-Darko continued, “It is not the job of journalists and analysts to fix the cedi, but fixing it is not helped if they make it more their job to fuel speculations. The cedi may be worth 60% less now than what it was to the US dollar last year. But it is not worthless!”.

“My sympathies go to the many, many businesses and consumers out there who simply do not know where to turn. There is hope because there is every indication that the new injection of more forex, should reduce the influence of black market operators on rates, giving the local currency a necessary relief from next week”, he concluded.

The comments by the NPP bigwig comes at a time when the local currency is experiencing acute decline as compared to the US dollar and other major trading currencies.

The situation has subsequently triggered widespread anxiety amongst the public, with many blaming the government for failing to salvage the economy.

In a series of social media comments recently monitored by JoyNews, some sections of the populace are calling for the resignation of the Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, in the wake of the economic crisis.

Meanwhile, President Akufo-Addo says there is no basis for him to sack the Finance Minister.

According to him, Ken Ofori-Atta has discharged his duties “excellently” and therefore he cannot relieve him of his duties.

Speaking on OTEC FM on Monday, he said he has full confidence in the Minister, who is his cousin.

He insisted that Ofori-Atta cannot be blamed for the current economic woes the country is facing.

  • Stop comparing our achievements with NDC; we’re in hard times – Otchere-Darko to NPP members

A prominent member of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Gabby Otchere-Darko, has called on his colleagues in the party to stop comparing the party’s achievements with the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).

According to him, the ‘politics of equalisation’ is not prudent amidst the economic hardship being experienced by Ghanaians.

In a series of tweets on Tuesday, he stated that there is the need for the party to focus more on highlighting government’s relief programmes instead of bantering with the NDC.

This he said, should be the posture of the party in the wake of the Cedi’s depreciation and other economic difficulties.

“NPP shouldn’t play the politics of equalization with the NDC on inflation, interest rates & cedi depreciation. The world is facing an economic crisis like never before in peace time. Ghana has been hit very hard because our economic recovery was being delicately managed pre-COVID”, he tweeted.

The NPP stalwart later continued, “This is not election year, so don’t treat Ghanaians like voters but citizens. Politics of comparisons works when elections are before us. Right now people just care about how to make ends meet. Use your energy in showing what is being done to bring relief”.

The admonition by Mr Otchere-Darko comes in the wake of the renewed exchanges between the NDC and NPP on who has performed better.

Across both traditional and social media, communicators of the two parties have been seen making spirited arguments about which of the two parties has been the better managers of Ghana’s economy.

In recent times, these comparisons have been triggered by the depreciation of the local currency and other challenges facing the economy.

But the private legal practitioner believes that these engagements do not augur well for the party, hence the need for the NPP to draw the attention of Ghanaians to what government is doing to alleviate the plight of Ghanaians.

Ghana is currently reeling under intense economic pressure due to the consistent increment in the rate of inflation as well as the depreciation of the Cedi and increasing debt stock.

Unemployment is also on the high with the cost of living still rising by the day.

The worsening conditions have therefore thrown many citizens into a state of despair and lamentations.

The latest group of citizens to express their grievances is the Ghana Union of Traders of Association (GUTA).

Members of the Association have therefore closed down their shops from today, over the hardship in the country.

Meanwhile, government says it is at the verge of concluding negotiations with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) on interventions that can transform the country’s economic fortunes.

  • Government deserves praise for the way it has handled economy – Otchere-Darko

Gabby Otchere-Darko, the founder of the Danquah Institute (DI) and a prominent figure in the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), has stated that the administration and the Ministry of Finance (MoF) deserve praise for the way they have managed the nation’s economy despite the ongoing difficulties.

Following the government’s signature of an agreement with 13 Participating Financial Institutions, Mr. Otchere-Darko made this statement (PFIs).

The GH10 billion YouStart entrepreneurship program’s commercial component will be implemented with the help of the deal.

According to the DI founder, government deserves commendation because in spite of the challenges, salaries are still being paid and the various interventions by government have not been altered.

In a tweet on Thursday, 22 September 2022, Mr Otchere-Darko said: “The Akufo-Addo government and in particular, MoF, deserve the nation’s commendation for their handling of the economy in these most challenging times.

“Despite slump in revenues, bills are being paid, including salaries, roads being fixed, & money found for programmes like YouStart.”

  • Why use Jubilee House Facebook page to project ‘private citizen’ Gabby Otchere-Darko? Sam George questions

The Member of Parliament for Ningo Prampram, Samuel Nartey George, has questioned the basis for which the appointment of a private legal practitioner, Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko, as Chairman of the Advisory Board of the Commonwealth and Investment Council (CEIC) was published on the official Facebook account of Ghana’s presidency.

Gabby Otchere-Darko was appointed the new chair of CWEIC Ghana Hub on September 1, 2021.

Sharing a screengrab of a post made on the presidency’s Facebook page with the handle name “Jubilee House,” Sam George sought explanation on why such information about the private legal practitioner was shared with a state account despite several claims that he holds no state or government position.

“Dear Charles Nii Teiko Tagoe and Kow Essuman, can you explain to me a taxpayer why the presidency is using its official social media handle to put out information about an individual who we are told has nothing to do with government?

“Why is the Jubilee House projecting Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko? What’s going on guys?” Sam George sought his answers from two staffers at the presidency.

In response to the post, however, a member of the ruling party and current Chief Executive Officer of the National Entrepreneurship and Innovation Programme (NEIP), Kofi Ofosu Nkansah, said the post was a mistake which was acknowledged with proper corrective measures taken.

“Pulled down long ago. Mistake acknowledged,” he stated.

However, Charles Nii Teiko Tagoe, one of the presidential staffers Sam George sought his answer from, tagged the question by the opposition MP as needless propaganda.

“Next time, do a little research and reading and stop your usual needless propaganda. Now read and come back again,” he shared his comment with a link to the publication of Gabby’s appointment after initially acknowledging the post as a mistake in another comment.

A cousin to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko, has been labelled by some people as influential in the current government.

However, there have been counterarguments against claims influence wielded by the private lawyer in the current government with point being made to the fact that he holds no official position in the government of his cousin.

  • 20% reduction in government’s expenditure affecting development Gabby Otchere-Darko

Leading member of the NPP, Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko, has hinted that although the government was able to control the COVID-19 pandemic, it is having difficulties reviving the economy.

In a tweet posted on March 15, 2022, the NPP (New Patriotic Party) stalwart indicated that the economic challenges of the country are as a result of the failure of parliament to pass the government’s revenue mobilisation efforts.

“The Ghana story: president said of covid: we know how to fix the economy but not how to revive the dead. Covid controlled but Parliament says no to fiscal measures to fix economy.

“Spending now cut drastically by at least 20%, affecting development, contractors, incomes and jobs,” the tweet Gabby shared read.

Meanwhile, former Deputy Finance Minister, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, has accused the government of owing service providers of the National Health Insurance Scheme arrears of at least 9 months.

In a tweet posted on March 11, 2022, Dr Forson said that the arrears of the service providers form part of a long list of debts the government owes.

The ex-deputy finance minister, who is also the Member of Parliament for Ajumako Enyan Essiam, added that the government owes statutory funds including the District Assembly Common Fund (DACF) and the Road Fund are even worse.

  • Is it not time to open our land borders? – Gabby asks

Since Ghana recorded its first case of coronavirus, land borders were closed and to date, the situation remains the same.

There have been several calls and agitations from traders, border town neighbours and some members of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) on the government to as a matter of urgency reopen the land borders.

The latest to join in the call is the cousin of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko wondered if the time is not ripe for the governing New Patriotic Party to reopen the land borders and beaches.

In his view, the land borders should be reopened but Ghanaians and other key stakeholders need to be cautious.

In a tweet sighted by GhanaWeb, he said life still goes on despite the outbreak of coronavirus.

Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko said, “Is it not time to reopen our land borders and beaches, but without letting our guard down? If COVID-19 is now the norm then life must go on but with care.”

Meanwhile, Ghana continues to receive vaccines from some countries to aid the fight against the pandemic.

On September 14, 2021, Ghana received 98,400 doses of COVID-19 AstraZeneca vaccines donated by the government of Norway through the COVAX facility.

Early this month, Ghana took delivery of more than 1.3 million Pfizer vaccines from the US government. The Pfizer vaccine came with 222,000 vials.

The delivery brings the total of United States donated vaccines to more than 2.5 million doses.

  • Manasseh responds to Gabby’s ‘LGBTQ+ bill’ comments

There’s an ongoing debate on the criminalization of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer (LGBTQ+) activities in Ghana. As some back this call, others think otherwise.

NPP stalwart, Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko, over the weekend said the new anti-gay bill to be presented in parliament will only lead to Ghana being blacklisted for promoting hate but renowned journalist, Manasseh Azuri, has punched holes into this comment.

He wondered why the Western world hasn’t sanctioned Arabian countries for frowning against the activities of LGBTQ+ in their territories.

In a Facebook post sighted by GhanaWeb, the investigative journalist said, “To Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko and those talking about Western sanctions and blacklisting should Ghana go ahead with the anti-LGBTQ+ bill, I want to ask this question: Why has the West not sanctioned or blacklisted Saudi Arabia and other countries in the Arab World? Are there no gays and lesbians in Saudi Arabia and the Arab world? Or do they discriminate in the application of their principles? As we question our own actions, shouldn’t we not also question the inconsistencies of the West?”

In his view, African leaders, including those in Ghana, should rather be blacklisted for looting resources and spending lavishly on themselves while their citizens suffer and keep wallowing in poverty.

“Why have they not blacklisted Ghana and other African countries for the massive looting of resources and aid money by their leaders while the masses suffer? Why should some powerful nations tie aid to LGBTQ+ rights instead of other important issues of governance such as corruption? Or is sexuality more important to them than the poverty and famine that are caused by the leaders, whose devious actions they know very well?” he quizzed.

Individuals of the same sex who engage in sexual intercourse are liable on summary conviction, to a fine of not less than seven hundred and fifty penalty units and not more than five thousand penalty units.

Or to a term of imprisonment of not less than three years and not more than five years or both.

Here are major highlights of the bill before parliament:

    – Sex shall only be between a man and woman. Anything else is illegal.

    – Anyone who participates, promotes, supports, advocates gay sex commits an offense and could be jailed for a minimum of 3 yrs.

    – The law completely makes illegal, any form of advocacy, group, or discussions on the practice of homosexuality.

    – It is an offense to use any media to discuss the subject. These include individual social media accounts and mainstream media. A media person can be jailed for 5-10 years, while the owner of a media platform may also be jailed.

    – The bill recognizes blowjob as sex.

Currently, it is at the draft stage and will be laid before the house and subsequently expected to be referred to the appropriate committee for consideration.

  • NDC should consider amending their candidate, not manifesto Otchere Darko

Ranking Member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko has asked the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) to amend their candidate, John Dramani Mahama.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) on Tuesday, December 1 announced an amendment to their manifesto and has since promised to absorb the fees of students who will be admitted to the various tertiary institutions across the country in the next academic year.

This is an upgrade on its earlier promise of halving fees for continuing students of the various University students.

But reacting to the swift change, Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko in a post on social media said that the NDC should rather consider amending their candidate for the impending election.

He said, “I hear the NDC have amended their manifesto with a few days to go. Perhaps, they should consider amending their candidate instead!”

Meanwhile, the Scholarship Secretariat has announced a scholarship package for the first batch of Free SHS graduates.

  • Gabby Otchere Darko mocks John Dramani Mahama with definition of ‘Psychosis’

Even though the General Elections In Ghana is set to be held in December 2020, former President John Dramani Mahama is yet to pick his running mate.

It’s quite surprising because under normal circumstances, he should have picked and announced his running mate by now.

In a bid to take a swipe at the New Patriotic Party(NPP) , the Presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has taken to social media to indicate that it has become a frustrating psychosis for the NPP as it is unable to correctly predict the winning ticket of its opponent; the NDC.

In an immediate response to former President John Dramani Manama, Gabby Otchere Darko also took to social media to help him with the definition of psychosis.

According to Gabby, psychosis is a mental disorder characterized by a disconnection from reality.

He also explained that psychosis may occur as a result of a psychiatric illness such as schizophrenia adding that it may be caused by a health condition, medication or drug use.

  • John Mahama replies Gabby Otchere-Darko – You are suffering from psychosis

In yet another cryptic Facebook post former President Mahama seems to have replied Gabby Otchere-Darko, who himself last night through a cryptic Facebook post seemed to throw jabs at the former President.

Mr.. Otchere-Darko made the following post “It must be pretty frustrating when your choice of running mate turns you flat down…especially after you have approached him personally with your offer.

Uneasy lies the head that wears a thorny crown…”

If we thought it was in reference to John Dramani Mahama, then it looks like we are in luck because Mr. Mahama this morning made a post which seems like a direct reply to Otchere-Darko.

    The former President posted,

“It can be a frustrating psychosis when you are unable to correctly predict the winning ticket of your opponent”

What one can pick from this post is that whoever it is the former President plans to pick as his running mate, he has very high hopes in. if the post was indeed a direct response to Mr. Otchere-Darko, then keen-eyed political watchers will be looking out for any more related posts from the two gentlemen.

The battle lines are now well and truly drawn.

  • $1billion cash: Were not back to an IMF program – Gabby Otchere-Darko

An influential member of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko has explained even though the government of Ghana has secured a facility of $1 billion from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to support its fight against the novel coronavirus pandemic, it does not mean the country is back in an IMF programme.

Following the announcement that the IMF had successfully approved a credit facility of $1 billion to help Ghana confront the virus, many called out the governing NPP for demonizing the erstwhile National Democratic Congress (NDC) for borrowing from the IMF while the NDC was in power.

But in a sharp rebuttal, Mr Asare explained that the money made available by the IMF to help countries fight the virus is not similar to the Extended Credit Facility program that the NDC government entered into with the IMF in 2015.

Instead, he praised the current administration for being able to double the amount the IMF had made available to the country by making a strong case.

“Ghana pushed for $1bn IMF support to fight Covid-19. Yes, IMF has approved $1bn for Ghana. No, this does not mean we are back in an IMF program. The Fund says it has a $1 trillion war chest to fight Covid-19. Ghana made a strong case for double what IMF had on the table for us,” he wrote.

Ghana is among developing countries that have had to turn to the IMF for support to fight the pandemic due to resource constraints.
