National Service Authority military training programme to roll out when funds are released – Youth Minister

Minister of Youth Development and Empowerment George Opare Addo, has disclosed that all other measures are in place to roll out the National Service Authority military training programme except for funds.

He explained that the Finance Ministry is yet to disburse funds for the programme, however, two of His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama’s flagship programs for the ministry, the Adwumawura Program and National Apprenticeship Programme, are currently running.

“The only one that should have started last year, we’ve done everything, but finance has not released funds yet. But we are still in talks with the Finance Minister and he has assured us that this year, we will have the funds to roll that program out,” Mr Opare Addo said, while taking Her Excellency, the Vice President Jane Naana Opoku-Agyeman, through programs being implemented at the Ministry of Youth, Development, and Creation.

In April 2025, President John Dramani Mahama announced that National Service Personnel (NSPs) across Ghana will undergo up to two months of military-style training starting August 3, 2025, as part of a new initiative dubbed the National Service Emergency Response Readiness Programme (NSERRP).

The initiative is intended to equip service personnel with foundational military drills and a sense of national duty.

Speaking at a high-level meeting on April 23, Director-General of the NSA, Felix Gyamfi, described the move as essential for cultivating patriotism and resilience among Ghana’s youth.

“The introduction of this military training is a step in the right direction and must be embraced by all and sundry as one of the indicators for resetting the country, particularly the youth,” Gyamfi noted.

He confirmed that all NSPs would participate in basic military drills and orientation during their service, describing the training as a vital component of national development and identity-building.

Representing the Ghana Armed Forces, Brigadier General Amoah-Boakye affirmed the military’s full commitment to the programme, assuring the NSA of the army’s readiness to support and deliver the required training once the programme launches.

The initiative reflects the vision of President John Dramani Mahama, who outlined the programme during his maiden State of the Nation Address to Parliament on February 27, 2025. It forms part of a broader agenda to instill discipline, national pride, and physical preparedness in the country’s graduates.

“To achieve a legally robust regime to govern National Service, I have also tasked the Minister for Youth Development and Empowerment to coordinate and present to Parliament a Legislative Instrument (L.I.) to support the implementation of the newly passed National Service Authority Act 2024 (Act 1119),” President Mahama stated.

Ghana joins a host of nations—such as Sweden, Denmark, Norway, and China—that have integrated some form of military service or basic drills into their national service programmes. These models range from mandatory conscription, as seen in Russia, to more symbolic or limited training, such as in the United States, where compulsory service exists legally but is rarely enforced.

The NSERRP initiative is expected to not only provide practical survival and leadership skills to service personnel but also help instill a deeper sense of duty and discipline among Ghana’s next generation of leaders.

The late Minister of Defense, Dr. Omane Boamah, clarified that the National Service Emergency Response Readiness Programme, will be optional and not mandatory.

“10,000 national service volunteers are expected to kick-start this initiative with plans to increase the numbers substantially next year. They’re volunteers. It is not compulsory,” the minister said.

Engaging the media today, July 21, as part of the government’s accountability series, he noted that the basic military and emergency response training is a 6-week orientation training scheduled to run in two batches from August to October this year.

The areas of training will include basic military orientation, first aid, basic life support, disaster or fire management, nationalism and patriotism, loyalty and discipline, leadership, mentorship, and physical training, among others.

President John Dramani Mahama, on Monday, April 28, launched the Adwumawura Programme at the Prempeh Assembly Hall in Kumasi, unveiling a major initiative aimed at fighting youth unemployment and promoting entrepreneurship.

The Adwumawura Programme, according to its design, will “create, mentor, and support at least 10,000 businesses annually,” focusing specifically on young people aged 18 to 35. Participants will benefit from skills training, mentorship, start-up capital, and equipment to help them build sustainable businesses.

During his address, President Mahama described youth unemployment as “one of Ghana’s most pressing challenges” and reiterated his administration’s commitment “to create decent and sustainable jobs for young people,” aligning with the National Democratic Congress (NDC)’s vision of economic growth and innovation.

Funding for the initiative has been secured through a GH₵100 million provision made in the 2025 Budget Statement, delivered by Finance Minister Cassiel Ato Forson. To complement Adwumawura, the government also plans to implement the National Apprenticeship Programme, providing free technical and vocational training opportunities for the youth.

At the event, Minister for Youth Development and Empowerment, George Opare Addo, called on young people to take charge of their future and contribute to national progress, while reiterating the government’s commitment to supporting youth empowerment and entrepreneurship.

Also in July last year, President John Dramani Mahama officially launched the National Apprenticeship Programme (NAP) in Tamale. The nationwide initiative was designed to equip young Ghanaians with practical, employable skills to reduce youth unemployment. The inauguration ceremony, held at the University for Development Studies (UDS), marked the beginning of a skills revolution expected to train tens of thousands of individuals each year across all 261 districts.

The programme began with 10,000 apprentices and was planned to scale up to 100,000 by 2026, supported by a GH¢300 million allocation from the 2025 budget, which was set to cover both training expenses and monthly stipends for participants.

President Mahama emphasized that the National Apprenticeship Programme offered young Ghanaians—particularly those unable to pursue further education—a valuable opportunity to acquire practical skills for self-reliance. He assured that individuals with no formal education were welcome to apply and would receive training in local languages if necessary.

Training included both short courses (2–4 months) and long-term apprenticeships (12–18 months), tailored to specific trades and the prior experience of applicants.

The application process was scheduled to commence shortly after the launch and was made accessible online via the National Youth Authority (NYA) portal, as well as at all metropolitan, municipal, and district assembly offices, ensuring inclusivity for all potential applicants.

The National Apprenticeship Programme was positioned as a key part of the government’s broader strategy to tackle the country’s 12.6% youth unemployment rate and the 29% of young people not engaged in education, employment, or training. The initiative was expected to significantly improve income levels among beneficiaries, contributing meaningfully to long-term national development.

As the rites progress, more dignitaries and sympathisers are expected to join the gathering to pay their last respects and participate in the national farewell for the late Nana Konadu Agyemang-Rawlings.

, Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings served as the First Lady of Ghana from June 4, 1979, to September 24, 1979, during the presidency of Jerry John Rawlings.

She held the same position again from December 31, 1981, to January 7, 2001. She earned a Bachelor’s degree in Graphic Design at the University of Science and Technology (now KNUST), after specialising in Textiles. She furthered her education at the London College of Arts, where she obtained a Diploma in Interior Design.

Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings did not stop there; she went on to pursue a Diploma in Advanced Personnel Management from Ghana’s Management Development and Productivity Institute in 1979. At GIMPA, she received a Certificate in Development.

She later attended Johns Hopkins University in Maryland, USA, where she pursued a Senior Fellow Diploma in Policy Studies. Before her involvement in politics and social activism, she worked with the Ghana Tourist Board and the Union Trading Company (UTC) in Accra, as well as with several other organisations.

As a formidable advocate for women’s rights and social justice, she founded the 31st December Women’s Movement in 1982. The influential non-governmental movement aimed at promoting women’s education, economic empowerment, and legal reforms.

Through Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings’ efforts, the Intestate Succession Law (PNDCL 111) was enacted to protect the inheritance rights of widows and children.

In Ghanaian politics, she is recognised as the founder of the National Democratic Party (NDP), through which she ran for president in 2016. She was succeeded by Mohammed Frimpong, who led the party after she stepped down in 2024.

She parted ways with the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in 2012, following her defeat to the late President John Atta Mills in the party’s 2011 flagbearer race. She was elected as the NDC’s First Vice Chairperson in 2009.

In 2018, she launched her book titled It Takes a Woman, which captures her journey in politics and advocacy. Scores of Ghanaians have poured in with their tributes following her passing.

Recently, she was seen at the Forecourt of the Jubilee House to honour the eight public servants who passed away following the helicopter crash that occurred on August 6 at Adansi in the Ashanti Region. She was also spotted during the Dote Yie funeral rites for the late Asantehemaa, Nana Konadu Yiadom III.

Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings got married to the late Jerry John Rawlings in 1977 after they both met at Achimota School. The couple had four children — three daughters and one son. Unfortunately, Jerry John Rawlings passed away in November 2020 at the age of 73.

He was confirmed dead after a short illness at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.

  • 28% of university students abusing cough syrup – Youth Minister Opare Addo

28% of university students abusing cough syrup – Youth Minister Opare Addo

Shocking revelations have emerged over the abuse of drugs, specifically opioids, on university and college campuses.

Opioids are pain relievers; while they help with pain, opioids can also cause an euphoric high which makes users addicted.

In a recent interview, Minister for Youth Development and Empowerment, George Opare Addo, revealed that a survey conducted on tertiary students discovered that about 28 out of every 100 university or college students abuse codeine and cough syrup.

On Thursday, August 28, he indicated that 12 in every 100 tertiary students are involved in cocaine abuse. The Minister for Youth Development and Empowerment further reported that 11% of the participants admitted to overusing heroin.

“Codeine and cough syrups stand at 28%. And then you will be amazed to know that 12% of our university and tertiary students are abusing cocaine and 11% heroin,” he added.

According to him, more than half of the respondents have admitted to consuming marijuana-infused products. In July, Minister for Health, Hon. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, declared Opioid abuse a national emergency.

During the induction of a new cohort of pharmacists who join the Pharmacy Council of Ghana, the inductees were charged to aid the government’s efforts in combating the opioid crisis, particularly the misuse of tramadol.

Hon. Akandoh reminded the new pharmacists of their motto, “Amicus Humanis Generis” Friends of the Human Race, urging them to uphold it with compassion, ethics, and excellence.

The ceremony, held under the theme “The Future is Now: Young Pharmacists at the Forefront of Preventing Opioid Misuse in Ghana”, highlighted both the promise and responsibility that lie ahead for the nation’s newest healthcare professionals.

Hon. Akandoh described the event as a “special day” marking the beginning of a crucial professional journey. “You have reached this milestone through dedication, hard work, and perseverance,” he said.
The Minister emphasised the critical and evolving role of pharmacists in Ghana’s healthcare landscape, describing them as “frontline healthcare providers, educators, patient advocates, and guardians of public health.”

He noted that pharmacists’ work has a direct impact on health outcomes and the well-being of the public. The Minister highlighted how pharmacists are central to the government’s broader health agenda, including the MahamaCares and Free Primary Health Care initiatives.

These programs, he said, rely on pharmacists to deliver accessible, quality healthcare and manage chronic diseases at the community level.

The Ministry of Health has extended its heartfelt congratulations to all newly inducted pharmacists and commends the Pharmacy Council for its unwavering commitment to excellence in healthcare delivery.

In April, the Ministry of Health destroyed a significant consignment of illicit opioid-containing drugs that had entered Ghana under questionable circumstances.

The consignment, which consisted of 128 boxes of Tafrodol, 92 boxes of Timaking Tapertado, and 10 boxes of Rahol Tapentadol, totaling 230 boxes, posed serious risks to public health, particularly due to the potential for widespread misuse and addiction among the youth.

The destruction of the drugs took place at Vigour-DW Enterprise, a waste management company based in Ashaiman, and was supervised by key regulatory and legal authorities.
The operation was carried out in strict compliance with a court order. In a rare and highly symbolic gesture, the Ministry chose to publicly incinerate the drugs, sending a strong message to those involved in the illegal drug trade.

Minister for Health, Hon. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, emphasized that this action was only the beginning in the fight against illicit drug trafficking.

“We will not stop here. After the safe disposal of this consignment, we will further investigate the clearing agent and the importer, and hand them over to the Attorney General for prosecution,” he stated firmly.

A BBC Africa Eye investigation uncovered that Aveo Pharmaceuticals, based in Mumbai, has been producing unlicensed, highly addictive opioids that are illegally exported to West Africa.

These drugs, packaged to resemble legitimate medications, contain a dangerous combination of tapentadol, a powerful opioid, and carisoprodol, a muscle relaxant banned in Europe due to its addictive properties.

This combination, which is not licensed for medical use anywhere in the world, can cause severe side effects, including respiratory distress, seizures, and fatal overdoses. Despite these risks, the drugs have gained popularity as cheap, readily available street substances in Ghana, Nigeria, and Côte d’Ivoire.

The Pharmaceutical Society of Ghana (PSGH) has condemned the illegal importation of dangerous opioids and called for a thorough investigation into the matter.

The Society has urged multiple agencies—including the FDA, the Pharmacy Council, the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) Customs Division, the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service, the Narcotics Control Authority, and the National Intelligence Bureau—to probe the issue and hold those responsible accountable.

“If any local pharmaceutical company is found to have breached regulatory protocols, appropriate sanctions should be enforced to maintain the integrity of the pharmaceutical supply chain in Ghana,” PSGH stated in a press release issued on February 24.

Ghana’s Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has revoked the Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) certification of Aveo Pharmaceuticals, an Indian pharmaceutical company, after investigations linked it to the illegal distribution of opioid-based medications in West Africa.

As part of the crackdown, the FDA has also directed Samos Pharma, a Ghana-based importer, to terminate all business relations with Aveo Pharmaceuticals and Westfin International. Additionally, the registration of six products from Masters Pharmaceutical Limited, which intended to use Aveo as a contract manufacturer, has been suspended.

Gov’t to transform youth empowerment with unified digital platform – Opare Addo

The government is set to introduce an all-in-one digital platform aimed at providing young entrepreneurs easy access to information about available programs, funding options, and investment opportunities.

The platform, which will integrate all 21 ministries, aims to streamline access to government-backed initiatives, driving youth-led economic growth.

The announcement was made by the Minister of Youth Development and Empowerment, George Opare Addo, at the AgriBiz Youth and Women Dialogue held in Accra.

He highlighted the platform’s potential to help young people make informed decisions about where to invest and how to grow their businesses.

“We are creating a digital platform where all ministries will showcase their programs and funding opportunities. This will enable young people to make informed decisions about where to invest and how to develop their businesses,” Opare Addo stated.

The initiative comes at a time when Ghana’s youth unemployment rate is 19.7%, with 57% of the population under the age of 25. Experts believe that targeted interventions are crucial to equipping young people with the tools needed to succeed in business and entrepreneurship.

Executive Director of Africa Skills Hub, Daniel Antwi, also spoke at the event, emphasizing the importance of agribusiness in driving economic development.

He stressed the need for bold leadership and strategic investments to empower youth and women-led agribusinesses by facilitating access to land, capital, and technology.

“This is not just a conversation; this is a defining moment. We must reimagine agribusiness as a catalyst for growth and ensure young people and women have the resources, capital, and access they need to thrive,” Antwi asserted.

He further highlighted the potential of innovation in food production, processing, and trade to boost the economy and create sustainable livelihoods for youth and women in agribusiness.

Afua Ansre, the UN Women Ghana Country Representative, also reinforced the urgency of engaging young people in agribusiness, particularly through technology-driven solutions.

She pointed out that innovations such as drone-assisted irrigation, AI-driven soil analysis, and digital marketplaces are opening up new economic opportunities across Africa.

“We must change the perception of agribusiness and ignite passion among our youth. Across Africa, young entrepreneurs are leading agritech innovations, from drone-assisted irrigation to AI-driven soil analysis and digital marketplaces. These advancements are unlocking new economic opportunities,” she said.

Africa Skills Hub, a leading enterprise support organization, continues to drive youth and women’s economic empowerment through skills development, entrepreneurship training, and business incubation.

Its programs have impacted thousands of young entrepreneurs across Ghana, providing them with the expertise to build sustainable businesses and contribute to national development.

Video: Opare Addo alleges some prominent people are fueling the red drug crisis

Minister of Youth Empowerment and Development, George Opare Addo, has raised serious concerns about the rising cases of drug abuse in Ghana, particularly among young people.

He also claimed that some well-respected figures in society are secretly involved in distributing these substances, worsening the crisis.

“I am hearing names on this drug menace, and they are very alarming. We need to be very frank with ourselves if we want to tackle this issue head-on,” he said.

In an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen show, Mr. Opare called on security agencies to be more alert and take stronger action.

To help tackle the problem, he revealed that the government plans to carry out lifestyle audits on individuals suspected of being involved in the drug trade.
“Drug trafficking is a big business, and we need to be aware of how deep this issue runs. The time to act is now,” he stated.

Mr. Opare, who is also the National Youth Organizer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), stated that everything affecting young people must be addressed.

“Everywhere in the world, if regulations are loose, people will find ways to exploit them. We must let intelligence guide us as a country in combating this problem.”
The growing abuse of drugs, including marijuana, tramadol, cough syrup mixtures, and “wonim red,” shows that many young people are struggling with serious issues.

The Minister emphasized the need for immediate action to stop this problem from getting worse.

“We will soon launch an effective and massive campaign to combat drug abuse. We will educate the public, help those in need of rehabilitation, and provide alternative livelihoods. We won’t allow drugs to destroy our country,” Mr. Opare revealed.
He also pointed out that while drug abuse was once largely confined to slums, it is now spreading rapidly, even in universities.

“This is a very bad trend and it is affecting the future of our youth. Our campaign will cover all of this—schools, churches, and even traditional authorities will be involved.”

Mr. Opare called on businesses in Ghana to back this initiative, emphasizing the need for the country to invest in programs that create positive and lasting change.

“We are not safe, considering how rampant this issue has become. We intend to go everywhere to ensure drugs don’t destroy our future.”
The campaign will carry the message “Red means stop,” symbolizing the urgent need to put an end to the drug menace and protect the future of Ghana’s youth.

Giving the poor youth an alternative livelihood will end illegal mining – George Opare Addo

George Opare Addo, the Minister-Designate for Youth Development and Empowerment, has outlined a comprehensive plan to combat illegal mining, commonly referred to as galamsey, by providing alternative livelihoods to impoverished residents in mining communities.

During his vetting before Parliament’s Appointments Committee on Wednesday, Opare Addo, popularly known as Pablo, underscored the importance of addressing the root causes of galamsey. He explained that poverty in mining areas often compels residents to engage in illegal mining activities, making sustainable solutions critical to ending the menace.

“We must eliminate poverty in the communities where illegal mining thrives. If we can effectively provide alternative livelihoods, we may succeed in bringing an end to illegal mining,” he stated.

The minister-designate also highlighted the importance of reorienting the youth in mining communities toward sustainable practices. “For young people who want to go into mining, we have to reset their minds. There is an old way they have done things, and we must re-engage them to change that approach,” he said.

Opare Addo emphasized his intention to collaborate closely with the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources to promote sustainable mining practices. “We are going to work together with the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources to look at sustainable ways of mining. I want a Ghana where illegal mining is not a part of our reality, but instead, we mine in a manner that is sustainable and does not degrade the environment in any way,” he remarked.

He further noted that tackling illegal mining requires a multifaceted approach, including the implementation of poverty alleviation programs. “Wherever there is gold and poverty, people will find a way of getting underground to extract the gold. We must eradicate poverty from these areas. By giving them alternative livelihoods, we can shift their focus to more productive and sustainable economic activities,” he stressed.

Illegal mining has long posed a significant threat to Ghana’s environment, with water bodies and forest reserves suffering extensive damage. Despite efforts by successive governments, the galamsey menace persists, prompting citizens to demand pragmatic measures to end the practice.

I won’t discriminate; I’ll serve the Ghanaian youth – George Opare Addo vows

George Opare Addo, Minister-designate for Youth Development and Empowerment, has pledged to lead with fairness and inclusivity, promising to prioritize the needs of Ghanaian youth without bias or favoritism.

During his vetting before Parliament’s Appointments Committee on January 22, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Youth Organiser assured the committee of his dedication to the newly established ministry’s objectives.

“I started by saying that the day His Excellency nominated me, I put out a statement urging every Ghanaian youth to believe in the kind of leadership I bring on board. I am not going to be discriminatory. I’m here to serve the Ghanaian youth and no other person,” Opare Addo stated confidently.

He also added that “I don’t care about your political party. Bring me a proposal that creates jobs for the youth, and I’ll work with you.”

His assurances come at a time when expectations are high for the newly created Ministry of Youth Development and Empowerment, which aims to address the pressing challenges faced by Ghana’s youth, including unemployment and limited opportunities for personal and professional growth.

The African Development Bank (AfDB) has reported that Ghana’s youth unemployment rate reached 7.16% in 2023, with the issue being particularly severe among those aged 15 to 24.

This information comes from the AfDB’s updated 2024 Africa Economic Outlook, which underscores a significant gender disparity in youth unemployment rates.

According to the report, unemployment is notably higher among young women than their male counterparts. Female youth unemployment reached 36.7%, while the rate for males was 29.3%.

The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has expressed deep concern about the escalating issue of youth unemployment in Ghana. He called for a united front to address the situation urgently, warning of severe consequences for the country if effective measures are not promptly implemented.

“The joblessness, the homelessness and the hopelessness of the youth cannot be taken lightly. We must act together and now to prevent a journey to calamity or a journey of no return,” he stated.

As the vetting process concludes, Opare Addo’s passion for youth development and his pledge to serve with integrity are likely to remain key factors in the evaluation of his nomination.

  • Issues surrounding youth elections could breed division in NDC – Brogya

A contender in the just-ended National Youth Organizer election of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Brogya Genfi, has warned that issues that characterized the party’s National Youth Organizer election if not immediately resolved could cause division in the party.

Brogya Genfi who narrowly lost to incumbent George Opare Addo is in court to restrain the latter from holding himself as the National Youth Organizer of the party.

Speaking to Starr News, Brogya Genfi said the issues must be resolved now to ensure the needed unity and cohesion in the party to enable the NDC to wrestle power from the governing New Patriotic party come the 2024 election.

“… for example, the Eastern Regional Youth election has been annulled, why, because the Regional Youth Organizer is my supporter. Because he’s from the home region of the National Youth Organizer and he’s not supporting him, he’s gone to court to annul the election. That can also breed division and so that must be looked at. So it’s not just about the action I have taken.”

He added: “I would love to have an opportunity with the former President(Mahama) for an extensive discussion on the way forward for the party.”

Meanwhile, the NDC at its National Delegates Congress over the weekend defied a court injunction secured by Brogya Genfi and swore in George Opare Addo as its Youth Organiser.

  • Vote for the devil you know and not the angel you don’t know – Akamba tells NDC delegates

The current National Organizer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), the opposition party, Joshua Akamba, has urged party delegates to support national executives who are running for re-election.

According to him, the election of George Opare Addo and Dr. Hannah Bissiw as National Youth Organiser and National Women Organiser, respectively, are indications that the delegates appreciate the work done by the current executives prior to the 2020 general elections.

Joshua Akamba explained that his sterling performance as the National Organizer has helped the NDC attain equal seats in parliament with the majority, the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

He added that with his help, the party has been able to shore up the electoral deficit in the country.

This, he added, was also because he personally bought pickup trucks for regional organizers of the party, as well as lobbying for motorcycles for all 275 constituency organisers to enable them to campaign for the party.

Speaking in an interview with Kumasi-based Oyerepa TV, Joshua Akamba said that a vote against him would be an injustice to the party.

“The delegates won’t make that mistake.

“The delegates are discerning, and they believe in experience. Now, Opare Addo has won. Hanna Bissiw has won. Elorm, who is an old person, has won, so it should tell you that people want us to win power for us to salvage this country, and they won’t make the mistake of changing us.

“The delegates know that the strategies of the party gave us equal numbers in parliament. The devil you know is better than the angel you don’t know. That is exactly what I am telling the people—that I am the devil they know and I am better than the angel they don’t know,” he told host Kwesi Parker-Wilson of the Oyerepa Breakfast Show.

Joshua Akamba further stated that the work of a national organizer is not on Facebook or WhatsApp, arguing that his contenders who have taken their campaign and work to social media lack appreciation for the work they are vying for.

He assured the delegates that he would continue to work assiduously to ensure victory for the party in 2024.

  • Sammy Gyamfi denies ownership of the East Legon Hills mansion

The National Communications Director for the opposition National Democratic Congress, Sammy Gyamfi, has denied being the owner of a multi-million dollar property in East Legon Hills.

Sammy Gyamfi was recently in the news for reportedly acquiring a fleet of cars and building the said mansion in the plush East Legon Hills area.

Some of his critics have questioned his source of income following the report.

But speaking in an interview on Onua TV, Sammy Gyamfi denied the reports.

“I am not the owner of any of those houses…” Mr Gyamfi said in an interview on Accra-based Onua TV on Wednesday morning (Dec. 14, 2022).

On the issue of him owning a fleet of cars, Sammy Gyamfi said he only owns a single Toyota Land Cruiser V8, which was gifted to him by an admirer of former President John Dramani Mahama.

The national communications officer said whiles has been a benefactor of many benevolent persons, he has never been a thief.

George Opare Addo, the NDC’s re-elected National Youth Organiser, has been quoted as criticizing Sammy Gyamfi over the alleged mansion.

Opare Addo, who was calling out Sammy Gyamfi for openly campaigning for his competitor in the party’s recently held youth elections, questioned his revenue source.

Meanwhile, former President John Dramani Mahama has called for a truce between the two party officials, who have been engaged in a series of media spats.

  • Stop current exchanges – Mahama tells Sammy Gyamfi, George Addo

Former President John Dramani Mahama has urged the National Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Sammy Gyamfi, and the newly-re-elected National Youth Organiser, George Opare Addo, to ceasefire on their public banters at each other.

According to him, the exchanges bring no benefit to the party but only serve as a distraction.

He therefore urged them to rather keep their eyes on the prize for the ‘Ghana we want’.

In a Facebook post, the former president shared two separate pictures that showed his engagements with Sammy Gyamfi and George Opare Addo.

“I’ve had meetings with our Youth Organizer and Communications Officer and agreed with them that the current exchanges must stop. It brings our great party no benefit and only serves as a distraction from the hardship caused by the reckless management of our economy.
Let’s keep our eyes on the prize for the ‘Ghana we want’,” he wrote as caption.

The two started their public exchanges just after the National Women and Youth conference that was held at the Cape Coast Stadium on Saturday, December 10, 2022.

Prior to the elections, Sammy Gyamfi openly campaigned for Yaw Brogya Genfi, one of the candidates in the race for the National Youth Organizer position.

However, the candidate, Bronya Genfi, lost by 25 votes to George Opare Addo.

Speaking in an interview after the elections, George Opare Addo expressed disappointment over Sammy Gyamfi’s position against him, adding that all efforts to reconcile with Sammy Gyamfi proved futile.

He also accused Sammy Gyamfi of being an influence peddler and questioned the source of his wealth.

  • Pablo instigated NPP communicators to attack me – Sammy Gyamfi

National Communications Officer of the NDC, Sammy Gyamfi, has accused the party’s re-elected Youth Organiser of hiring members from their biggest contender, the NPP, to openly vilify and attack him.

According to him, Pablo, whose mandate as National Youth Organiser was renewed last Saturday, held a meeting with NPP communicators last night and fed them with narratives to malign his person.

Speaking on Accra-based Onua TV on Wednesday morning, he explained that some of the NPP communicators who Pablo met last night, later called him to leak Pablo’s dubious intentions.

He said those communicators wondered why Pablo, a national executive of the NDC would want to stab a fellow executive, in the person of Sammy Gyamfi.

The NDC spokesperson however refused to mention the names of his informants, but tressed that George Opare Addo, popularly known as ‘Pablo’, was behind the scheme to have his name soiled.

“He met them (NPP communicators) last night and fed them with false narratives”, he stressed in the local Twi dialect.

However, the campaign coordinator for George Opare Addo, Abubakar Mutiu-Rahman, has refuted the said allegations by the NDC’s National Communications Officer.

In a statement shortly after Sammy Gyamfi’s claims on Onua TV on Wednesday morning, Mutiu-Rahman said Pablo has not met any NPP communicator as Sammy Gyamfi alleged.

He said Pablo is committed to the cause of the NDC and would not embark on any such treacherous move to destroy the party.

“The claim that Pablo met with NPP Communicators yesterday is false, at no point has Pablo met any NPP communications team, not previously or yesterday.

Mr Gyamfi must prove when and where this meeting took place as well as who the participants were”, the statement emphasised.

“There is no greater insult than the claim of being a traitor to one’s party; we will not countenance any more of such allegations from Sammy Gyamfi and his ilk. We will allow this to slide but let no one mistake it for cowardice.

Pablo is very much committed to leading a united front for the NDC Youth Wing. He’s willing to work with all and sundry to ensure HE John Dramani Mahama is elected President, so we can rescue this nation”, the statement concluded.

The comments by both parties come in the wake of the outcome of the NDC’s recently held National Youth and Women’s Congress.

At the said Congress, the incumbent National Youth Organiser, George Opare Addo, retained his seat in a keen contest again former Ashanti Regional Youth Organiser, Brogya Genfi.

However, the supporters of Pablo as well as himself believed that Brogya Genfi was supported by Sammy Gyamfi and other bigwigs in the NDC; including close associates of former President, John Dramani Mahama.

This has subsequently created a feud between Sammy Gyamfi and Pablo and his allies.

Speaking on Asempa FM yesterday, Pablo said he is disappointed in the schemes that were orchestrated by Sammy Gyamfi to remove him.

Meanwhile, the NDC’s National Communications Officer says he supported Brogya Genfi based on his rapport with him; adding that he did not go on rampage to attack Pablo during the contest.

Speaking on Onua TV, Sammy Gyamfi also denied the allegations that close associates of Mahama, such as the former Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, were all behind Brogya Genfi.

He further discounted Pablo’s claims that he had spoken about his health during the campaign period.

  • Sammy Gyamfi must explain how he financed his Airport Hills mansion – Pablo

Newly reelected National Youth Organizer of the Opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) George Opare Addo has openly asked his fellow Executive Sammy Gyamfi to explain his source of wealth.

According to George Opare Addo who won reelection with a slim margin against Yaw Brogya Genfi, he considered the contest as him against “that Airport Hills small boy” Sammy Gyamfi and not Brogya, Opare Addo said on Live Radio with Mugabe Maase.

Mr. Opare Addo later dared Sammy Gyamfi on air to explain how he owned the plush property.

“As for this election, it was that Airport Hills small boy I contested not Brogya, I said today I will mention names… I contested Sammy Gyamfi and I won. He is a small boy. There is nothing he can match me on, I have lived life well. He is a small boy.” Pablo said.

Sammy Gyamfi openly campaigned for his friend Yaw Brogya Genfi to be elected National Youth Organizer but lost by 25 votes at the just ended Women and Youth elections of the party. Opare Addo was not happy with Sammy Gyamfi and said Sammy Gyamfi has become an obstacle he has to deal with.

“Yes, Sammy Gyamfi has now become an obstacle and in my way and this my second term I will not joke! I will cut away anybody who stands in my way as an obstacle. It is only action that we will see. Action action action….” Opare Addo said.

Popularly known as Pablo, the reelected NDC youth leader asked that Sammy Gyamfi explains how he built a house at Airport Hills and what work he does.

“Mugabe, ask Sammy Gyamfi how he built a house at Airport Hills, what work does he do?” He asked.

Opare Addo revealed previous reconciliation attempts he made with Sammy Gyamfi that failed.

“I called him twice for us to meet at my Dzorwulu office, ask him. He was at peace FM. I called him to come for us to sit and talk so that we can work together. So what is my crime?” Opare Addo revealed.

“I told him (Sammy Gyamfi) that the situation where he passes the other way when I pass one way will not help the party and I want is to work together to bring NDC to power, ask him if I am lying” Opare Addo revealed.

  • Pablo explains what caused confusion at NDC youth, women’s elections

The National Youth Organiser of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has explained what led to the confusion during the women and youth leadership elections at the party’s 10th Women and Youth Conference at the University of Cape Coast.

Speaking in an interview on Power FM, which was monitored by GhanaWeb, George Opare Addo, who is popularly known as Pablo, said that the election was delayed because of issues surrounding the eligibility of some of the delegates who were to take part in the elections.

He explained that there were issues with some delegates who had been barred from taking part in the elections by court orders, as well as the leadership of student groups that had intentionally not held their elections.

According to him, there was a court order barring three executives from the Eastern Region, the regional youth organiser and his two deputies, from taking part in the election, but his opponent was saying that all the executives from the region, including the constituency executives, were not to take part in the elections.

He, however, indicated that the issues raised were resolved with the help of the party’s lawyers, who were present, and the organisers of the conference, allowing the elections to continue.

“They made a lot of demands, which I accepted; my only demand was that I was not going to accept their move to exclude executives from three constituencies in the Eastern Region because they were misinterpreting the court order.

“And that one was based on facts, law. Because the law did not say that they should not be allowed to vote. The law stated those who were barred from voting, and they were the regional organiser and his two deputies,” he said in Twi.

He added that in the Greater Accra Region, some of the names on the voters’ registers had to be taken out, and the two parties to the youth elections came to an agreement for the elections to proceed.

Pablo was the eventual winner of the NDC’s youth organiser position, but the election was marred by violence.

The Ghana Police Service has even declared 16 people who were involved in the violence during the election, wanted.

  • NDC Internal Elections: Opare Addo, Hanna Bissiw retained seats

Dr. Hanna Louisa Bissiw and George Opare Addo have been re-elected as the  National Democratic Congress’s (NDC) National Women’s and National Youth Organisers, respectively after a keenly contested election in Cape Coast on Saturday.

Dr. Bissiw polled 433 votes to defeat her nearest rival, Margaret Ansei, who received 362 votes.

Additionally chosen as the Party’s Deputy Women’s Organisers were Abigail Akwabea Elorm Mensah and Felicia Dzifa Tegah, who received 341 and 260 votes, respectively.

On the other hand, George Opare Addo, also known as Pablo victoriously amassed 533 votes, beating his sole contender, Yaw Brogya Genfi who obtained 508 votes.

Having retained his seat for the second time,  Pablo will serve as the leader of the NDC’s youth for four years.

For the deputy youth organiser position, ten candidates contested.

After the voting was completed, Osman Abdulai Ayariga and Ruth Dela Sedoh were declared the two newly elected deputy officers of the NDC’s youth wing.

In his acceptance address, Opare Addo expressed gratitude to the delegates for their confidence in him and called for unity among party leaders and supporters in order to unseat the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the 2024 general elections.

The victorious Pablo addressing the delegates said, “now that this election has ended there is no Brogya Genfi camp or Opare Addo camp we are all one people fighting for one goal. Like I say all the time, we have just won the battle, but we have a war to fight, and so we are not going to be carried away by the battle we have won.

“We expect to unite, and we must bring everyone on board, so we can make John Mahama president once again. Our common enemy is the NPP, so today, we unite as the national youth of the NDC and our march is to march toward the Flagstaff House.”

Adding her voice, the newly elected women’s organiser also appealed to supporters to move away from personality following and focus on helping the party win the 2024 general elections.

“This victory is a victory for women in the NDC. I want to make everyone aware that hard work pays, and it is not a crime to work hard for the party you love. As Pablo said there is one common enemy and that is the New Patriotic Party under President Akufo-Addo. We must go out there and win more souls to win the elections come 2024,” she said.

He noted that Pablo ensured that the leadership of the party had ample time to interact and discuss their future and the future of the current opposition party while in Tamale for a political event.

“Pablo, I should thank you. My MP said yesterday, you just didn’t receive them well but you gave them room to share their thoughts and experiences with the gallant youth of our party. We remain grateful for the opportunity and for the gesture. And to Pablo on behalf of the parliamentary wing of the party, let me thank you profoundly; one for the Tamale Northern Region, my own region for this ceremony of grooming and seeking to develop the capacities,” he said.

For most of the NDC MPs, Mr Opare Addo has remained “selfless” as far as the party is concerned.

These appellations were showered on Mr Opare Addo at the National TEIN Capacity Building Boot Camp held in the Northern Region.

In his speech, Pablo expressed the words of a true leader, encouraging all to persevere and be determined to get the work done for the greater good of the NDC.

“Courage is not the one who shouts the loudest. Courage is not the one who portrays himself that I am courageous. But courage is getting the job done at every cost and making sure that there are no complaints. We are getting the job done, and I trust you will also go and get yours done,” he stated..

Since 2018, when he assumed office, Mr Opare Addo has worked to maintain the party’s good reputation.

In 2020, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) blamed the NDC for the fire outbreaks that happened in the country’s capital.

The NDC Youth Organiser, stood his ground, arguing that that NDC has no intention to burn market facilities which were constructed when they were in power.

He shepherded a protest at Odumase Krobo in the Lower Manya Krobo Municipality of the Eastern Region, where the NDC youth called on government to find the root cause of the fire outbreaks.

In the same year, with “Our Heritage”, the Youth Organiser started a social media promotion of elite NDC members, reminding Ghanaians that the biggest opposition party has the men to work.

Mr Opare Addo has also charged the party to be critical of government activities, which he believes will not augur well for the country’s development.

The issue of illegal mining, popularly known as “galamsey”, as well as macro economic variables such as unemployment have been of major concern to him.

Also, he opposed the introduction of the Electronic Transaction Levy, also known as E-levy, which is to widen the tax net of the government.

Holding the assertion that the E-levy would exacerbate the worsening economic conditions of citizens, he led the “Yentua Demonstration” which took place in February this year.

Mr Opare Addo is currently seeking a possible amendment of the party’s constitution, an undertaking many grassroots are pleased with.

The current state of the constitution prevents  Constituency Executives from voting at  Regional Conference and main National Delegates Congress.

A proposal by a committee from the Youth Wing under his leadership, if approved, will allow all other youth representatives to become fully-fledged Constituency Executives; making them eligible to vote.

It is reported that the youth wing of the party are pleased by his work, therefore, are willing to provide him a second term to guide the opposition party to victory in the 2024 general elections.

Already, Mr Opare Addo has stressed that the NDC will leave no stone unturned to ensure victory is theirs in order alleviate Ghanaians from their current challenges.

“The NDC will win the 2024 Presidential Elections & the Youth wing under my leadership will stop at nothing to make it happen. We are the NDC Youth Wing. We are the Green Army. We are Power Ready and We are Power Hungry,” he tweeted on October 2, 2022.

  • He’s respectful, accommodating and committed – TEIN Coordinator justifies retention of Pablo

A Coordinator of the Tertiary Educational Institutions Network (TEIN) of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has justified why current National Youth Organiser of the party should be retained.

Jacob Nwaangu Gbelinyari who is the TEIN Coordinator for the Savannah Region, Lawyer George Opare Addo who seeking a second term in office, is very humble, respectful, accommodating, and above all one who is very committed.

“As a TEIN Coordinator working with Pablo over this short period, one can confidently with comfort describe him as very humble, respectful, accommodating, and above all one who is very committed to the NDC and his assigned duties as the National Youth Organizer”, he disclosed.

Read his full argument for the retention of Lawyer George Opare Addo

I have been keenly monitoring the recent happenings and types of campaigns being adopted by many candidates and their teams, and of a particular interest to I, is the area of the National Youth Organizer contest. Having worked with the Youth Wing of the Party, NDC all this while, and as a stakeholder of the Youth Wing having served as TEIN President, Tamale Technical University and currently coordinating TEIN of the Savannah Region, it’s appropriate I bring to light my experience with Lawyer George Opare Addo aka Pablo and why we cannot afford the risks of losing him for anyone.

As a TEIN Coordinator working with Pablo over this short period, one can confidently with comfort describe him as very humble, respectful, accommodating, and above all one who is very committed to the NDC and his assigned duties as the National Youth Organizer and will go the extra mile to getting his job done. Sometimes, it marvels many the level at which Pablo can go sacrificing his personal resources into the Party, NDC and its members. Indeed, it’s not only comforting watching Pablo work for the NDC but, sometimes it makes one very emotional and teary when people deliberately fabricate stories against him for cheap political gains, and knowing from within their heart of hearts that all such issues raised against him are all falsehoods.

To say Pablo has been phenomenal in delivering his mandate National Youth Organizer is an understatement. However, just like every incumbency, he cannot run from the misfortunes that come with such. Just as he has incumbency advantages, so has he got same incumbency disadvantages. If not for that, how can anyone of fair-minded judgement consider Pablo as a failure and thereby contesting him? If we were fair to the NDC, Pablo deserved an unopposed contest!

In the campaign against Pablo, all you hear his opponents keep trumpeting on is that “he is against JM”. Unfortunately for them, they cannot account to the public what they’ve done for JM and want to forcefully assume the position of “darling boys” to JM.

Equally unfortunate on their part, the more they try to paint Pablo as anti-JM, the more unconvincing they appear to be. During the 2016 electioneering period, the supposed “anti-JM” supported JM and his Campaign Team with 5 Pickup Trucks even as he toured the entire country campaigning for JM as well. While Pablo was this much sacrificial for JM and the Party, NDC, where were the supposed “JM darling boys”?

Pablo’s tenure as National Youth Organizer saw him procuring about 16 Pickup Trucks and over 200 Motorcycles for Regional Youth Organizers, Constituencies Youth Organizers, and as well as JM 2020 Campaign Team. While Pablo was this much sacrificial to the Party and JM, where were the supposed “JM darling boys”? Pablo as well printed and donated to the Party, NDC over 20,000 JDM customized T-shirts in the year 2020.

With all these sacrifices to JM, we are being forced to believe that Pablo is one against JM. Now, even people JM doesn’t know are forcefully assuming the position of darling boys to him over those he knows and gave them the opportunities to have served under his government. Surprising, isn’t it? Unfortunately, the delegates are wise to differentiate between truth and lies.

To you our respected delegates, when people come to you telling you they’re JM’s darling boys, ask them of their track records and what they intend to do for the Party giving the opportunity. As a Party so much hungry in our desire to delivering victory for HE John Dramani Mahama and NDC and as well as the good people of Ghana, we must make it a conscious habit of running clean campaigns regardless of our individual differences.

Where were the supposed JM darling boys and JM saw so much trust in Lawyer George Opare Addo and appointed him as his MCE for a period of four years? At every given opportunity, HE John Dramani Mahama has always indicated how much he loves Pablo and how much Pablo loves him back. This is the reason why Pablo has been the National officer to have had travels, especially that which are foreign to engage the Party chapters abroad than any other National officer.

As part of Pablo’s achievement, he helped through Alhaji Inusah Mahama, the Savannah Region Youth Organizer, to deliver the Salaga South seat to the NDC. But for Pablo’s effort, can you imagine the NDC of John Dramani Mahama’s Savannah Region having 3 seats against the NPP securing 4 seats?

How can I against all odds, turn my back to all these glaringly clear records? Would that not be deliberate hatred and/or witchcraft?

Our dear respected Youth Organizers and TEIN representatives, if you do not want us to gamble with the victory of HE John Dramani Mahama and the NDC come 2024, I entreat you choose and retain Lawyer George Opare Addo as the National Youth Organizer to continue with his sacrificial works for the NDC.

I come in peace and bring you greetings from the Savannah Region.

    Thank you.

  • Brogya Genfi calls out Opare Addo, others for deliberately frustrating TEIN presidents

A National Youth Organiser aspirant for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Brogya Genfi, has called out the incumbent Organiser, George Opare Addo, and other leaders of the party for frustrating TEIN presidents during their just-ended regional elections.

In a statement, the aspirant indicated that the elections proved again that some leaders of the party do not treat members of the TEIN, the tertiary students’ wing of the NDC, well.

He explained that he was a victim of some of these ‘maltreatments.’

“I must observe that the elections although hugely successful, once again highlighted the continuous mistreatment and marginalisation of the intellectual wing of the party – the TEIN front. I personally witnessed this mistreatment in various incidents and reports that emanated from the Regions, and I join our teeming hard working TEIN youth in expressing our revulsion and total condemnation of same.

“Regrettably in a few regions, the TEIN fraternity was subjected to clear manipulation, intimidation and open abuse in the lead up and on the actual day of elections as they tried to exercise their franchise as a recognised outfit under the youth wing. We cannot reward the hard work of our TEIN leaders with this level of frustration,” he wrote.

Brogya Genfi added that he was particularly surprised that the National Youth Organiser of the part, George Opare Addo, was at the forefront of such unhealthy activities.

“The most unfortunate part of this whole spectacle was the fact that the National Youth Organizer of the NDC, George Opare Addo (who promised TEIN some few months ago that their voices will be heard at congress) was the main architect and mastermind who undermined the credibly approved and accredited TEIN institutions and tried to deny their voting rights. How could we be this unfair to the young people who on a daily basis put in the toil and hard work to project the party on various campuses?” he added.

He advised that the leadership of the party takes immediate steps to correct these anomalies so that it does not escalate and affect their fortunes in the future.

    Read his full statement below:

THE DELIBERATE FRUSTRATION OF TEIN PRESIDENTS IN NDC YOUTH CONFERENCES IS SHAMEFUL AND UNACCEPTABLE.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC), over the weekend successfully conducted Regional conferences to elect new regional leaders, including youth organisers in thirteen out of the sixteen regions of the country.

The spirit of comradeship that was displayed across the regions, and particularly, the positive energy of the youth convinced me beyond doubt that the NDC youth are poised to lead and drive the forward match of our great party back to the seat of government in 2024. I hereby seize this opportunity to congratulate all winners in the Regional youth elections and to wish all who did not win, better luck next time. Be rest assured that there will be a place for all of you under a leadership of courage and united purpose for our collective ultimate victory

Having said this, I must observe that the elections although hugely successful, once again highlighted the continuous mistreatment and marginalisation of the intellectual wing of the party – the TEIN front. I personally witnessed this mistreatment in various incidents and reports that emanated from the Regions, and I join our teeming hard working TEIN youth in expressing our revulsion and total condemnation of same.

Regrettably in a few regions, the TEIN fraternity was subjected to clear manipulation, intimidation and open abuse in the lead up and on the actual day of elections as they tried to exercise their franchise as a recognised outfit under the youth wing. We cannot reward the hard work of our TEIN leaders with this level of frustration.

The most unfortunate part of this whole spectacle was the fact that the National Youth Organizer of the NDC, George Opare Addo (who promised TEIN some few months ago that their voices will be heard at congress) was the main architect and mastermind who undermined the credibly approved and accredited TEIN institutions and tried to deny their voting rights. How could we be this unfair to the young people who on a daily basis put in the toil and hard work to project the party on various campuses?

There is however a window of opportunity for redemption, and it is my expectation that the right thing will be done this time around. As the party prepares to hold elections in three remaining Regional Youth Elections yet to be held, we must right the wrongs to avoid the ugly scenes we witnessed in the other regions where TEIN delegates were deliberately frustrated and prevented by an incumbent who should be representing their interest. This should present a golden opportunity for the party to restore hope in TEIN by adhering strictly to the FEC approved TEIN delegates list.

More importantly, the party must cease this opportunity to revive the lost hope and restore confidence in TEIN at the level of the upcoming National Youth Election. TEIN remains the production line of the party for breeding future leaders. All party leaders, elders and stakeholders must therefore rise to the occasion and join hands to fight off any repeated attempt to disenfranchise TEIN at the National Youth Conference. Suffice it to add that any such repeated attempt at the national level, will be mightily resisted.

It is my vision and solemn pledge to reposition TEIN to become a potent vehicle for mobilization for the party’s 2024 victory. The anticipated repositioning of TEIN will help mobilize first-time voters for the party, and serve as agents to secure the ballots at the polling stations. Therefore, any one or group of persons who are allowed to dampen the spirit of the TEIN front will be dealing the party a fatal blow as same will amount to handing a license to someone to hurt the NDC 2024 electoral fortunes, for their own parochial interest. Our victory in 2024 is non-negotiable and must not be toyed with.

  • Resign now or we’ll confront you with unprecedented resistance – NDC Youth Wing to Akufo-Addo

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) Youth Wing has made a strong-worded call on President Akufo-Addo to not only sack Ken Ofori-Atta but for him to also resign as Head of State.

Issued under the hand of the National Youth Organiser of the party, George Opare Addo, the group said that Ghanaians have had enough of the performance of this administration that has plunged the country into a lot of hardships.

The statement added that many Ghanaians have lost their investments and livelihoods because of the kind of government the president has run in the last six years.

“Over the past six years, you, your cousin the Finance Minister, your Economic Management Team headed by your incompetent Vice President, as well as your entire Government have pursued economic and fiscal policies that have wreaked havoc on our nation’s economy and resulted in untold hardships for the Ghanaian people.

“Today, because of your reckless governance, Ghanaian families are unable to put food on the table. People’s entire life savings are going down the drain, and our currency, the cedi, is depreciating at a rate never seen in the history of our nation in the past four decades. Yours has been a failure of historic proportions; one that has plunged our nation into its most acute economic downturn in an entire generation,” the statement said.

The NDC Youth Wing, therefore, called for an immediate resignation from the president else they would embark on an unprecedented resistance to his government.

“Enough is enough! Ghanaians did not give you the mandate to put us through this level of suffering that has spared no family nor business. The Ghanaian people cannot continue to suffocate under your repressive and destructive misrule. It has become apparent that you lack the fortitude to properly govern this country. We demand that you sack your finance minister and resign now, to stem the suffering that has engulfed our nation and save our country from further collapse and international ignominy!

“If you remain headstrong and refuse to sack the finance minister and resign from office as President, we will confront you with a level of resistance never experienced by any President in the history of our country,” it added.

The group further called on the youth of the country to be on standby to picket against the government.

“We are by this medium calling on all young people of this country to picket at Government offices and protest across the country whenever they are called upon by the Leadership of the Youth Wing to do so,” the statement said.

Already, there has been a call by 80 Members of Parliament from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to sack the Minister of Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta, as a way of restoring public confidence in the economy.

The president has since met with the MPs and urged them to give the minister some time to complete some pertinent government business, including the completion of an IMF negotiation.

  • Akufo-Addo must resign now – Opare Addo on ‘failed’ galamsey fight

National Youth Organizer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), George Opare Addo, has asked Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to tender his resignation as president of the country.

He holds the view that the president has failed woefully in his fight against illegal mining otherwise known as galamsey.

In two separate Twitter post, Opare Addo who is seeking reelection as National Youth Organizer of NDC observed with concern the state of water bodies which has been polluted by illegal miners.

He suggested that the government ought to be blamed for the state of the water bodies which Nana Akufo-Addo put his presidency on the line to fight the menace.

“State of rivers in GH now. If this doesn’t provoke you as a young person, then I understand why this gov’t takes us for granted. Resist this gov’t before they plunge this nation into a point of no return. Protest and let your voice be heard, protest, don’t defend,” Opare Addo tweeted on October 3.

“You claimed to put your presidency on the line to fight the destruction of our environment, yet failed woefully to combat illegal mining. Where’s the honour? Akufo-Addo must resign if he can’t keep his word to solve simple challenges. Resign now, Mr President,” he added.

    Background

The conversation on galamsey resurfaced following the rearrest of Chinese galamsey kingpin Aisha Huang and her accomplices.

She has been remanded into police custody as she faces her prosecution. Again, many civil society organizations have expressed concerns over the heavy pollution of water bodies which has compelled the Ghana Water Company Limited to threaten to shut down mining communities.

Pressure group, Occupy Ghana, has urged President Akufo-Addo to declare a state of emergency in mining areas as the country wage war on illegal activity.

The President, it will be recalled placed his presidency on the line in the galamsey 2017 however many hold the view that the fight has not been a success as a result of the discoloured nature of water bodies and some top officials found complicit in the fight.

Nana Akufo-Addo opines that he paid a political price for his fight as he lost votes and in some cases, NPP MPs were unseated in mining areas.
