Probe begins as Liberian ex-president George Weah’s asset papers leaks without his consent

Liberia’s House of Representatives Launches Probe into Leak of Former President George Weah’s Asset Declaration Documents

In a recent development, Liberia’s House of Representatives has initiated an investigation into the unauthorized release of former President George Weah’s asset declaration papers to the public.

As per the country’s regulations, all high-ranking government officials, including presidents, are required to disclose their assets to the Liberia Anti-Corruption Commission (LACC) upon assuming office.

This measure aims to prevent conflicts of interest and the accumulation of illicit wealth among public officials. However, it is not obligatory for these declarations to be made public.

The alleged leakage of the former president’s asset declaration documents to the public has raised concerns, as it is claimed to have occurred without his consent.

“Weah’s asset declaration form is now all in the public space and on various platforms,” Frank Saah Foko, a local legislator, said.

He stated that publishing the former president’s declared assets without his permission was against the law.

The source of the leak remains unclear, but lawmakers have called upon senior officials from the Liberia Anti-Corruption Commission (LACC) to provide explanations regarding the breach. They are scheduled to appear before the legislators on Tuesday.

In February, President Joseph Boakai, who emerged victorious in the November presidential run-off election, defeating Mr. Weah, publicly disclosed his assets, pledging to combat corruption within the nation.

During Mr. Weah’s presidency, accusations of corruption were rampant, and his administration faced criticism for the misconduct of senior officials.

Following Mr. Boakai’s inauguration in January, he urged former officials to promptly return any government assets they possessed “without hesitation or delay.”

  • Don’t box Asamoah Gyan; George Weah wasn’t better than him – Miracles to Gyan-NPP links

Don’t box Asamoah Gyan; George Weah wasn’t better than him – Miracles to Gyan-NPP links

Communications Director for the New Patriotic Party’s 2024 election campaign, Dennis Miracles Aboagye, has come to the defence of the appointment of legendary Ghanaian footballer Asamoah Gyan as the chairman of the sub-committee tasked with drafting the youth and sports aspects of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s manifesto for the 2024 elections.

Despite raised eyebrows and critics questioning Gyan’s competence to contribute meaningfully to policies shaping the future of sports and Ghanaian youth, Aboagye rebuked such scepticism on Asempa FM, emphasising the competence and intelligence of Asamoah Gyan.

Aboagye sees the opposition to Gyan’s appointment as indicative of a stereotype that views footballers as lacking the capacity to contribute meaningfully beyond the field.

He rejects attempts to pigeonhole Gyan solely as a football figure, arguing that he possesses the resourcefulness to occupy significant positions in the country.

Aboagye points to George Weah’s journey from footballer to President of Liberia, suggesting that if Weah could achieve such a feat, then Gyan, whom he regards as an even better footballer than Weah, should be more than capable of chairing a manifesto committee.

“Was Oppong Weah better than Asamoah Gyan? Didn’t he become president? If Oppong Weah, a footballer, could become president, then what’s wrong with Asamoah Gyan’s position? Are we saying a football player cannot draft a plan? A footballer became a president so why is it a jump too high for another footballer to chair an ordinary committee?

“We like to box people and label them but what we don’t know how to do is spot and harness talents. Let’s watch out for Asamoah Gyan. You’ll be amazed by the sort of delivery that young man will come up with,” he said.

On Wednesday, February 21, 2024, Asamoah Gyan was appointed as a member of the manifesto committee for Dr. Bawumia’s presidential campaign. Taking the helm of the youth and sports sub-committee, Gyan has been entrusted with leveraging his expertise to formulate ideas and strategies for sports advancement and the empowerment of Ghanaian youth.

Dennis Miracles Aboagye shed light on Dr. Bawumia’s rationale for selecting Gyan to lead the committee.

“Asamoah Gyan, at his young age, is already a legend. He has travelled across the world for years and has now retired. The best we can do is tap into his talent for wanting to fix our sports. Asamoah Gyan is a deep young man; he has a lot of ideas. If there is one person in the committee we believe is a masterstroke, then it is the selection of Asamoah Gyan. We are very grateful to him for helping us share his knowledge of sports,” he said.

  • George Weah’s presidency a disgrace – Nana Obiri Boahen

George Weah’s presidency a disgrace – Nana Obiri Boahen

Former Deputy General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Obiri Boahen has strongly criticized the leadership of outgoing Liberian president and former footballer, George Weah, labelling it as “disgraceful.”

Boahen expressed his disappointment with Weah’s presidency, citing a lack of good leadership as a significant factor in his recent electoral defeat.

In an interview on Angel FM, Boahen asserted, “Oppong Weah is a big disgrace, he disappointed everybody serious about politics in West Africa.”

He criticised Weah for squandering his opportunity as president, accusing him of opting for leisure, such as travelling to Qatar to watch football, instead of focusing on governance.

Boahen drew a comparison with other political figures, stating, “Buhari who stayed outside his country for over a month was sick, George Weah was not sick.”

He further remarked that if a similar situation occurred with Nigerian politician Tinubu, it would be more understandable due to his health condition.

George Weah conceded defeat on Friday, November 17, 2023, to former Liberian Vice President Joseph Bokai after a closely contested presidential race.

Weah’s presidency, which began in 2018, has been marred by allegations of corruption and a perceived lack of development.

Boahen urged African politicians to learn from Weah’s defeat, emphasizing the need to govern responsibly and prioritize the interests of the people. He cited the recent political change in Equatorial Guinea, although inaccurately, as an example of the consequences of ruling without regard for the populace.

“Africans are now discerning. If you rule anyhow, why won’t they vote against you? Even this one, the election was rigged. He would have lost terribly,” Boahen stated, emphasizing the growing awareness among African voters.

  • Liberia’s presidential election heads into run-off, George Weah competes Joseph Boakai

Liberia’s presidential election heads into run-off, George Weah competes Joseph Boakai

Liberia is heading for a run-off election next month after the initial round of voting resulted in a close race between President George Weah and his main rival, Joseph Boakai.

In the first round held on October 10, Weah secured 43.83% of the vote, while Boakai, a former vice-president, received 43.44%. This election marks the closest presidential contest in Liberia since the end of the civil war nearly two decades ago.

A run-off was anticipated due to neither candidate achieving over 50% of the vote in the first round. The run-off is scheduled for November 14, according to Davidetta Browne, the head of the electoral commission.

Boakai, 78, performed better than expected, closely approaching Weah’s vote share. In the previous 2017 election, Boakai lost to Weah by a significant margin.

In this election, Boakai campaigned under the slogan “Rescue,” accusing Weah, a 57-year-old former international football star, of leading Liberia into decline during his first term. Weah countered these allegations, citing achievements such as the introduction of free tuition for university students.

At a press conference last week, Mr Boakai urged fellow opposition candidates to join the “rescue team for a resounding victory”.

“We are reaching out to our brothers and sisters in the opposition and Liberians in general to join us in this noble mission of making our country breathe freely again.”

Mr Boakai served as vice-president in the government of Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, who became president after the end of a brutal civil war about 20 years ago.

He pledged that if he was elected president, he would form a “government of inclusion that truly reflects the political, social and religious diversity of the citizens”.

None of the 18 other candidates received more than 3% of the vote.

‘George Weah will accept results of election in Liberia’ – Coalition for Democratic Change

The official from George Weah’s political party said that he will agree with the outcome of the general election that took place on Tuesday.

Jefferson Koijee, the head of the ruling Coalition for Democratic Change, said to the media: “This person has repeatedly expressed that he values the peace of our country more than his own interests. ”

But Mr Koijee said that Mr Weah, who used to play football and is now 57 years old, will not lose.

Election officials said that many people came out to vote in Liberia’s fourth election after the war.

The votes are still being counted. The electoral commission will start announcing the results at 4:30 PM local time (5:30 PM BST).

Mr Weah will likely have to deal with his toughest opponent, former Vice-President Joseph Boakai, who is 78 years old and belongs to the Unite Party. Boakai was the assistant to Ellen Johnson Sirleaf while she was the leader of the country.

  • Electoral interference in Liberia polls to attract Visa restrictions – US

The United States (US) has made known it plans of placing visa restrictions on people actively involved in undermining Liberia’s next elections, which are slated for next month.

This measure is designed to deter actions that could compromise the democratic process, including election manipulation, fraud, violence, or any other activities aimed at inappropriately influencing the election’s outcome.

The U.S. State Department has clarified that these visa restrictions reflect the United States’ commitment to supporting the people of Liberia in their pursuit of a free and fair electoral process. While the statement did not mention specific individuals, it underscores the significance of upholding democratic principles and ensuring that the upcoming elections are conducted with integrity.

In the upcoming elections, President George Weah is seeking a second term in office, facing opposition leader Joseph Boakai, who was the defeated candidate in the previous election held five years ago.

  • Napoli colossus Victor Osimhen finally responds to George Weah’s goal record

Napoli colossus Victor Osimhen finally responds to George Weah’s goal record

In his pursuit of becoming Africa’s leading scorer in the Italian top division, Nigerian international Victor Osimhen is edging closer to George Weah’s Serie A scoring record.

Just one goal short of Weah’s record, the 24-year-old attacker has 45 league goals for the Partenopei since joining Napoli in the summer of 2020.

George Weah of Liberia was the top-scoring African player in Italian football between 1995 and 2000 with 46 Serie A goals in 114 games for AC Milan.

But in just three seasons, Nigeria’s Osimhen is set to overtake the record, but he admits that the former Ballon d’Or winner and current president of Liberia remains one of the greatest African players.

In a chat with Wole Opatola via Moor Sportz YouTube Channel, Osimhen said: “He (Weah) has to be considered as one of the greatest African strikers that graced the Serie A.

I want to continue to do my best and continue to do well for myself and for my team.

“At the end of the season, I think I stand a chance to surpass him or meet the record. I didn’t have the opportunity of watching him play, and I have never met him.

“But I’m closer to his son Timothy Weah.

His father is a huge example for us so that an African can also win the most prestigious prize in world football.”

  • Liberia parties sign peace pact ahead of October polls

Liberia parties sign peace pact ahead of October polls

To stop bloodshed before the presidential and legislative elections in October, Liberian political groups signed a peace agreement on Tuesday.

The agreement signed by 26 political parties, according to President George Weah, demonstrates the nation’s commitment to maintaining national stability during the election.

“History has taught us that the risk of post-conflict countries to regress to war is extremely high. By any account, therefore, Liberia is a post-conflict success story,” Mr Weah said.

The pact obliges signatories and their supporters to uphold peaceful elections and resort to constitutional means if they are dissatisfied with the electoral process and outcomes.

Members of observer missions from the African Union, the European Union and other diplomats witnessed the signing of the accord.

The elections are expected to be hotly contested with the incumbent facing strong challenges from former vice-president Joseph Boakai of the former ruling Unity Party and Alexander Cummings of the Collaborating Political Parties.

  • Pele, George Weah, other players who became politicians after retirement

Pele, George Weah, other players who became politicians after retirement

Footballers rarely work in politics after they retire because the field hasn’t historically been known as a place where footballers could thrive.

They frequently have a tendency to stick with the game that made them, so immediately following retirement, they begin a new football-related career.

But while some have tried their hand at politics and were successful, others are still looking for a way to make a bigger difference in how their nation develops.

Here are five footballers who turned politicians after retirement

    George Weah

George Weah is arguably the greatest African player ever, considering the career he had playing for some great clubs like AC Milan, Chelsea, Paris Saint-German, and a few others.

He is a three-time African player of the year and the only African footballer to have won the Balon d’Or.

George Weah announced his intention to run for President in 2005, two years after his retirement.

The AC Milan Hall of Famer engaged in several humanitarian activities during his playing career.

“Baby in the woods” Weah lost on his first attempt in 2005 to the experienced Johnson Sirleaf.

He went on to beat Sirleaf’s son Robert to become Liberian Senate from Montserrado County in 2014.

He finally landed his desired presidential seat in 2017 when he amassed 61.54% of the vote to defeat Joseph Boakai in a run-off on the ticket of Coalition for Democratic Change.

George Weah is now the 25th Liberian President in the country’s history.

    Pele

Widely touted as the King of Football, Edson Ariantes Edson Arantes do Nascimento has a great legacy in football.

He won three World Cup trophies, the most by a footballer and is the youngest player to score in the tournament as well as the first player to score a hat-trick in a World Cup final.

After retirement, he served as UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador and a UN ambassador for ecology and the environment before becoming Brazil’s Extraordinary Minister for Sport. He left office in 2021.

Pele passed on in 2022 at age 82.

    Sol Campbell

Sol Campbell after retirement joined the United Kingdom’s Conservative Party in 2014. He immediately announced his intention to run for office in hopes of securing ‘black votes’ for his party.

He was up for the party’s nomination for Mayor of London for the election in 2016 to replace Boris Johnson.

Campbell, however, failed to make the shortlist.

Sol Campbell was a highly-rated defender who spent all his career in England. He played for Tottenham, Arsenal, Newcastle United, Portsmouth, and Notts County.

He also played for the Three Lions, making 73 appearances in his 11 years international career.

    Roman Pavlyuchenko

Former Tottenham Hotspur, unlike the other players on the list, tried to juggle politics and football.

A year before he secured his move to Tottenham in 2008, he helped current Russian president Vladimir Putin’s party secure a seat in his hometown Stavropol.

    Romario

Romario de Souza Faria is a Brazilian great who had a successful career winning the World Cup, Copa America, FIFA Confederations Cup, and a host of club trophies playing for Barcelona, PSV, Flamengo, Vasco Da Gama, and a few others.

Just like his career in football, the ex-striker has had a successful career path in politics.

He was elected to the Chamber of Deputies, the lower house of Congress, during the general election in 2010.

While in office, he lobbied against Brazil’s hosting of the 2014 World Cup, claiming that an event is an event for corruption and money laundering.
In 2014, he was elected to the Brazilian senate after accumulating the most votes ever by a candidate.

He switched parties to contest for governor of Rio de Janeiro during the general elections in 2018 but came fourth.

Christian Atsu: I’m saddened by the loss of ‘my brother and young friend’ – George Weah

Liberian President George Weah has expressed his condolences to the family of the late Ghanaian footballer Christian Atsu.

In a statement, the President referred to Atsu as his “neighbour, small brother, and young friend” and remembered their personal interactions during Atsu’s early training in soccer.

“I knew him personally and his formative years in the game of soccer. I had the opportunity to interact with him in his early training… May your soul rest in peace, small brother,” he wrote.

The former footballer died following the Turkey Earthquake on February 6, 2023.

Weah has also donated $10,000 to Atsu’s family, which former Black Stars player Kwame Ayew presented on February 22, 2023.

As the only African footballer to have won the Ballon d’Or award, Weah’s gesture underscores his commitment to supporting fellow athletes and their loved ones in times of need.

George Weah supports Morocco’s bid for 2025 Afcon

George Weah, the president of Liberia, has endorsed Morocco’s quest to host the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon).

The former striker, who is the only African to have ever won the coveted Ballon d’Or, given to football’s finest player in the world, said he voiced his “fullest and powerful” support for the country that advanced to the Qatar 2022 World Cup semifinal.

BBC Sport Africa is aware of Weah conveyed his support in private during the MEDays international peace event, which was held in Tangier, Morocco, in November.

“Liberia fully endorses and supports Morocco’s bid to host Afcon 2025. I have made this commitment to King Mohamed VI. It is cast in stone,” Weah said in a statement released by Liberia’s state house following media reports he was ready to back Algeria’s bid.

Weah cited Morocco’s investment in football development and said he has already begun campaigning for the bid with stakeholders around the continent.

The 56-year-old, who played for clubs including Monaco, AC Milan and Chelsea during an 18-year career, also spoke of Morocco bringing immense pride to Africa during the World Cup.

Algeria, South Africa, Zambia and a joint bid from Benin-Nigeria are the other nations seeking to replace Guinea, who were stripped of hosting rights because of concerns over infrastructure and facilities.

Confederation of African Football (Caf) inspection teams are touring the bidding countries this month.

Findings will be submitted to the 24-member Caf executive committee which will announce the winner on 10 February.

  • Critics slam Liberia president’s nine-day trip to watch World Cup

President of Liberia, George Weah, has drawn criticism from his countrymen after it was revealed that he will attend the World Cup in Qatar for nine days.

The former Ballon d’Or winner informed the Senate of his nine-day World Cup schedule last week, and then he took out for a number of international trips.

Critique has come in the form of call-ins into radio and TV shows as well as on social media platforms.

Critics say it would be inconsiderate of the president to go to Qatar at a time when many people were dealing with a crippling food crisis, and other pressing issues at home.

The BBC Africa LIVE page reports that the president’s son Timothy, who is American, will be in the US squad at the World Cup tournament, which kicks off on 20 November.

The 56-year-old former AC Milan and Chelsea forward was elected president of Liberia in 2017. He was a serving senator at the time of his second-round victory over Joeph Boakai.

Mr Weah’s staff – who haven’t responded to questions about the cost of the trip – have hit back at his critics, saying the president’s foreign visits would “yield huge dividends” for the country.

  • Liberia defends move to invite US in deaths probe

Liberia’s Information Minister, Ledgerhood Rennie, has defended the move to seek help from the US government to investigate recent deaths of four civil servants.

The minister told the BBC’s Newsday programme that the government wanted a transparent investigation involving the best experts.

“Ourselves as government do not know what happened that is why we have launched a full scale investigation,” he said.

Mr Rennie said a preliminary report would determine if a criminal or non-criminal investigation is needed.

“People will come out with conspiracy theories and speculation about things when they happen. So we want to be clear and open so that tomorrow when the conclusions are made they can be convinced that whatever conclusions that are derived as a result of these investigations will be accepted by the public,” he said.

Mr Rennie said the investigation will involve the families of the deceased civil servants.

The officials who died include the head of the Internal Audit Agency, Emmanuel Nyeswua, and three other officials who worked for the Liberia Revenue Authority.

  • Weah lifts Liberia Covid-19 restrictions

Liberia’s President George Weah has lifted the state of emergency he declared in April to deal with the Covid-19 pandemic.

He has ordered soldiers who were deployed to enforce the restrictions to immediately return to barracks.

The controversial restrictions came to an end on Wednesday, days after the president told worshippers at his private church that he could not continue to keep the country in lockdown.

Mr Weah, however, warned the public “not to construe the cessation of the state of emergency as a licence to engage in behaviours that may lead to a further spread of the virus”.

But while the move has brought some relief, coronavirus infections continue to surge with the restrictions showing little sign of halting or reversing the spread.
