Sanitize the system, unprofessional behavior by some journalists unbecoming – Lawrence Tetteh tells GJA, NMC

Rev. Dr. Lawrence Tetteh, President of the World Miracle Outreach Church, has announced his intention to take legal action against a former Net2 TV presenter. This decision follows a viral video in which the presenter accused him of various false allegations, including impregnating someone’s wife in London.

During an interview with Fiifi Pratt on Kingdom FM, Rev. Tetteh expressed his outrage and condemned Kwaku Annan’s accusations as baseless and damaging to his reputation. “That is rubbish, that is not journalism. Legal action will be taken. Those behind these claims are either vindictive, hired to spread falsehoods, or simply seek to tarnish my hard-earned reputation,” he stated passionately.

Determined to address the issue directly, he declared, “Enough is enough, the nonsense must stop. I will do everything possible to put an end to this stupidity and foolishness. Defamation and malicious intent cannot be tolerated.”

Rev. Tetteh also appealed to the Ghana Journalist Association and the National Media Commission to uphold professional standards in media reporting. “It’s about time the Ghana Journalist Association and the National Media Commission sanitize the system otherwise people will lose the love, respect, and dignity they have for the media,” he urged, emphasizing the need to maintain respect and trust in Ghanaian media.

This incident highlights Rev. Tetteh’s commitment to defending his reputation against what he views as unfounded attacks aimed at damaging his character and achievements.

  • Let’s go back to ‘dumsor’, ‘dumsiesie’ is not the best – GJA President

Let’s go back to ‘dumsor’, ‘dumsiesie’ is not the best – GJA President

The Ghana Journalist Association (GJA) is calling for a structured load management timetable to help businesses plan effectively amid ongoing power challenges.

GJA President, Albert Kwabena Dwumfuor, expressed preference for the term “Dumsor” over “Dumsiesie” in describing the erratic power outages, emphasizing that “Dumsor” at least came with a schedule.

Speaking on Starr Chat with Bola Ray on Thursday, May 9, 2024, Dwumfuor highlighted the detrimental effects of power disruptions on media operations, stressing the need for consistency to fulfill their role as informers and facilitators of governance.

“You can’t say that it is ‘dumsiesie’; what is ‘dumsiesie’? We would be better off with ‘dumsor’ than ‘dumsiesie’ because ‘dumsor’ comes with a schedule. My people from the media sector will actually appreciate it. This is affecting equipment; this is affecting transmission time. Assuming that you don’t have the capacity to purchase industrial generators, automatic switches, and all that, you’ll just be there, and you’ll go off air.

“How do you serve the people? We serve as a bridge between the governed and the governor, and so as the bridge, we are supposed to be informing people with policies, and if we go off, break down, or if we are unable to discharge that duty, we will be doing a great disservice to this nation, and it will affect our democracy,” he said.

He emphasized the importance of informing the public about policies and issues, which becomes challenging when power outages disrupt broadcasting schedules and transmission times.

Despite President Akufo-Addo’s announcement of resolving the power crisis during the May Day celebration, many parts of the country continue to experience inconsistent power supply.

  • GJA’s blacklisting of media attackers is popular but dysfunctional – NMC

GJA’s blacklisting of media attackers is popular but dysfunctional – NMC

The National Media Commission (NMC) strongly condemns the recent violent assaults on journalists by supporters of Awutu Senya East constituency Member of Parliament, Mavis Hawa Kooson.

Notably, Citi FM’s Northern regional correspondent, Mohammed Aminu M. Alabira, fell victim to an attack by Yendi Constituency Member of Parliament Farouk Aliu Mahama during coverage of the NPP’s Parliamentary primaries on January 27, 2024.

In response to these incidents, NMC Chairman Yaw Boadu Ayeboafo has criticised the Ghana Journalists Association’s (GJA) decision to impose media blackouts on such individuals.

Speaking at the Ghana Journalist Association (GNA)’s Zone 3 workshop in Kumasi, Ayeboafo expressed his view that while the media blackout approach is popular, it is dysfunctional.

Addressing the media, Ayeboafo stated, “The recent violent attacks on journalists fulfilling their primary duty of informing our people are regrettable. The GJA’s unilateral decision to call for a boycott or blackout on such individuals, while popular, is dysfunctional.”

He continued by sharing a past experience, saying, “Many years ago, I faced disapproval from the Ashanti regional Chapter of the GJA when they issued a similar order against the Vice Chancellor of the KNUST Professor. Despite dissenting opinions, I maintained that, while it is disheartening for journalists to be violently attacked, a unilateral resolution to blackout or boycott is not the most productive reaction. We cannot fight impunity with impunity.”

The former managing news editor of the state-owned Daily Graphic urged GJA leadership to pursue legal avenues to advocate for journalists under attack.

Ayeboafo emphasized, “I support any effort to ensure justice prevails against such deviant acts rather than resorting to blackout or boycott. We must adhere to the rule of law and due process. While the call for boycott or blackout may be popular, it may not be productive or functional in the public interest.”

He concluded by drawing a parallel with international conflicts, asserting, “Many journalists have lost their lives in the current Israel-Hamas war, and while the international media calls for respect for laws safeguarding journalists, none have called for a boycott or blackout over Israel or Hamas.”

  • Former GJA President increases pressure on IGP to track down Ahmed Suale’s killers

Former GJA President increases pressure on IGP to track down Ahmed Suale’s killers

Roland Affail Monney, a former president of the Ghana Journalist Association (GJA), has encouraged journalists in Ghana to put the greatest amount of pressure on the Ghana Police Service to provide an update on those guilty for the murder of Tiger Eye PI investigator Ahmed Hussein-Saule.

Speaking in an interview with Kwabena Mensah Abrompah on Radio Univers, he asserted that the Inspector-General of Police, Dr George Akuffo Dampare, formed a special investigative unit to look into the mysterious murder of Ahmed Suale in order to bring sanity to the journalism field, but there has been no update in years and as journalists strive to be comprehensive reporters, it is necessary to press the police to inform Ghanaians of the latest developments in the investigation.

“So, about some years now, Dr Dampare formed a Special Unit to investigate Ahmed Suale’s death and others, so in the name of comprehensive journalism, we the journalists need to ask the police that we have information on the Special Unit set aside to investigate Ahmed Suale’s death and other murder cases.

“…therefore, we have to ask them how far with the investigations. We need to apply pressure always on them. Once in a while, we need to remind them again, we need to put pressure on the CIDs or the police always to find solutions.”

He added that in his opinion the police service and the other security services will only be forced to reveal the truth if journalists apply the required pressure on them as well as question them about the efficiency of the special unit investigative team.

Hussein-Saule was assassinated in Madina on Wednesday, January 16, 2019, by two unknown assailants.

The assailants shot him twice in his chest and once in his neck after breaking into his car. The Ghana Police Service is still investigating his murder, but no one has been arrested yet.

  • Buipewura Jinapor II to chair 2021 Northern GJA awards

Paramount Chief of the Buipe Traditional Area Buipewura Abdulai Jinapor II has been chosen by the Northern Region executives of the Ghana Journalist Association (GJA) to chair the 2021 edition of the Association’s regional awards.

According to the executives, the decision to settle on him was necessitated by his recognition of the media as a tool for development.

“Jira, we have monitored your countless engagement with the media over the years and as a partner in development, we couldn’t have settled on a better person than you to chair our awards this year,” regional Chairman of the Association Yakubu Abdul Majeed told him.

Mr Abdul Majeed eulogized the chief for his commitment to peace not only in the Savannah Region, where he is based, but throughout the three regions of the north.

“Jira, your commitment to peace which is a panacea for development is overwhelming,” he added.

For his part, Buipewura Jinapor II accepted to chair the occasion.

He promised to secure funds for the awards and also made some personal pledge of a bull, rice and an undisclosed amount of money.

“There are a lot of prominent people in the northern enclave and so settling on me is a privilege which I need to honor.

“I love the media and what they do because without the media we can’t develop and so any development-oriented ruler will have to by all means work with the media.”

He admonished the media in the north to use their work and space to project the regions.

“We are lagging behind in everything and we can only catch up with the south if you concentrate on stories that will project the regions of the north in a positive light to attract investors.

“We have the human and natural resources but we are unable to turn them around because of the perception people have about us. You can change that to positivity.”

The 2021 Northern GJA awards is scheduled to take place on Wednesday, November 2, 2022 in Tamale.

  • GJA charges Police to bring perpetrators of Wa killings to justice

The Ghana Journalist Association (GJA) has added its voice to calls for the perpetrators of the mysterious deaths happening in Wa in the Upper West Region.

GJA President, Mr Albert Kwabena Dwumfour, who made the call on behalf of journalists in the country urged the Police to ensure that the killers of five people in Wa are brought to justice.

He made the appeal at the 2022 International Peace Day press conference in Accra, which was organised by the National Peace Council (NPC) in collaboration with the United Nations (UN) in Ghana.

“As we celebrate this year’s Peace Day, it is my hope that Ghana and the world will witness a lasting peace,” Mr Dwumfour stated.

“This week alone, we all learnt with shock the dastardly killing of five persons in Wa. This has heightened tension in the Region which, if not handled well can disturb the peace we are all yearning for.”

He called on the Police to do everything within their powers to arrest the perpetrators of this heinous crime.

He said the Police must intensify security in the northern sector of the country, particularly, in Wa and work towards crime prevention, since it was the only way peace could be guaranteed.

The International Day of Peace was established in 1981 by the UN General Assembly to commemorate and strengthen the ideals of peace both within and among all nations and peoples as a period of non-violence and cease-fire.

The Global theme for this year’s commemoration is “End Racism. Build Peace”.

The NPC, in seeking to harness Ghana’s existing inter-ethnic and inter-religious ties and to promote tolerance, unity and a more inclusive society, has domesticated the theme: “Managing Ethnic Diversity in Ghana for Sustainable Peace”.

Mr Dwumfour appealed to the Peace Council, the Police Service and institutions of peace to collaborate with the GJA in building the capacity of journalists on security issues, aimed at ensuring a lasting peace in our communities and country.

He also called on the Interior Ministry to always update the media on the state of insecurity of the country to enable us the media and the citizenry to work towards creating the enabling environment for peace to reign.

“In achieving peace, we all need to put our shoulders to the wheel and commit to it. We need to “walk the talk and not talk the talk”,” Mr Dwumfour said.

He said the citizenry must also assist the Police with information to enable them fight crime which was a major threat to peace; saying “peace is a collective responsibility”.

He reiterated the GJA’s resolve and unwavering commitment to supporting the Peace Council to deliver on their mandate, which ultimately is ensuring peace in the country.

Reverend Ernest Adu-Gyamfi, Chairman, Governing Board, NPC, said the local theme for the celebration was to allow them to address Ghana’s peculiar challenge of ethnic and tribal sentiments that are gaining root in the country and gradually eroding the peace we have as a people.

He called on Ghanaians, institutions of state and civil society to join forces to remove barriers to the realization of a just, fair, open, and inclusive society for all the peoples of Ghana.

He appealed to the chiefs and people of the Bawku traditional area to cease fire; declaring that “Nobody gains from protracted conflicts. I am not sure any body involved in the conflict is happy that children are not in school, the sick cannot access health service, movement of goods and people have been restricted and freedoms curtailed”

Mr Charles Abani, the United Nations Resident Coordinator in Ghana, said in terms of peace, Ghana was a crown of jewel in the sub-region; adding that Ghana’s peace architecture was a model for other countries to emulate.

Mrs Afi Azaratu Yakubu, Executive Secretary, National Commission on Small Arms and Light Weapons, said small arms and light weapons continue to play a terrible role in robbing the nation of its peace; saying “indeed, small arms and light weapons fuel a lot of our conflicts”.

For the sake of peace, she appealed to Ghanaians to use dialogue in resolving their differences.

The event was attended by members of the Queen Mothers Foundation Ghana and students from Labone Senior High School and Accra High School.
